Whether it be a tropical retreat or a primary residence, any home can be made to feel as if one has just escaped to their own vacation getaway. For our cover story, interior architect and designer Myriam Rojas created such a resort-like setting for one family’s two-story, 3,500-square-foot vacation home on Miami’s Key Biscayne. The designer styled a less-hurried way of life for this oceanfront penthouse apartment with light tones, transparent materials and an open, airy feel. Ocean-inspired elements, organic materials and rustic touches lend a warm tranquility, while bursts of color add a bright surprise. A real-life tropical haven was fashioned by interior designer Juan Poggi when he devised the look for a 5,000-square-foot penthouse in Aruba that overlooks the Caribbean. Here, bold color makes a statement, artfully grounded by hues of linen, white and cream. Sophisticated fun au natural can be found on the home’s impressive, cabana-like rooftop terrace, while an abundance of light flows throughout the interiors. Set in a different time and place, one 8,000-square-foot primary manse that sits on two acres feels like a vacation resort all its own. Created by designer Robert Kevin Cassidy, this expansive home on Sarasota Bay is evocative of an Old World Italianate villa with a koi pond, two-story pool and guesthouse, fine European finishes and an array of stonework from the Dominican Republic. To experience more in tropical living, turn to this issue’s book review, British West Indies Style, and explore the beach-style luxury of some of the most affluent homes in the Caribbean Islands, where a relaxing retreat is just a plane ride away. I SALONI 2011 Fifty And Fabulous — A Milestone Anniversary That Celebrates Design, Creativity And Culture TEXT Kim Mosley PHOTOGRAPHY Courtesy of Cosmit spa, Milan, Italy

eflecting on design and the world of industry that has made it possible over the past five decades, I Saloni 2011 celebrated its 50-year anniversary in Milan, Italy, this past April. Manufacturers and designers worldwide gathered to reveal awe-inspiring surprises and expressive forms that amazingly balance tradition and innovation on exhibit at the mainstay events: Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, SaloneUfficio, SaloneSatellite and the biennial Euroluce. Also, the exquisite city of Milan hosted an overarching cultural project staged at various historical venues. . . . continued on page 68

Looking back at the past with an eye to the future, innovation is what spurred on that initial group of entrepreneurs, culminating in September 1961 with the first-ever Salone del Mobile. To mark the show’s 50th anniversary this year, a theatrical piece, Great Hands, Without End — The Birth and Ascent of Design in Milan, debuted at the Teatro Studio Expo. The Triennale Design Museum dedicated its fourth edition to those that have helped create the Italian design system; at Euroluce, Attilio Stocchi’s scenography for The Arbour transformed the heart of Milan into a new, visionary Theatrum Naturae; and the suggestive setting of Piazza Duomo provided the backdrop to Principia — Forward Arts, an exhibition devoted to an imagined future. For additional information about the show, visit www.cosmit.it. ABOVE: Bonaldo’s “Big Table,” designed by Alain Gilles features lacquered steel legs and a table top

IMAGINE ICFF Dazzling Design Combines With Functional Form To Shape This Year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair TEXT Kim Mosley

I

n May, Florida Design hit the scene at the Javits Center to check out the 23rd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair — New York’s premier design event that serves as prelude to what’s best and what’s next in design. We sifted through more than 550 exhibitors to present a smattering of some of the freshest designs from this year’s show. A promenade through rows of exhibitors peaked the imagination with a diverse selection of displays from well over 40 countries. With so much to discover, we were instantly drawn to the Limited Edition pieces by Boca do Lobo. Only 20 of each (“Crochet,” “Frank” and “Victoria”) are produced and each is handcrafted from start to finish by a single artisan. Not to be ignored, seating took center stage with such designs as the sculptural sylings of the acrylic “Z Chair” by Plexi-Craft and the fluid designs of Ayala Serfaty for Aqua Creations. . . . continued on page 80

And when a break from walking the floor became eminent, it was time to explore the show within the show. After a brief stop at the ICFF Bar — a magnet for fairgoers and a memorable watering hole purely by design — we found ourselves at the ICFF Bookstore. As much as design enthusiasts love our Kindles and our iPads, we are and always will be people of the printed page, and this cozy ICFF hub delivers every year with author appearances, book signings and the latest volumes on the a-to-z array of designers and design disciplines. COLORS OF ARUBA When Miami designer Juan Poggi got the call from his clients inviting him to design their Aruba get-away … he wasn’t surprised at their caveat: “We’re going to work with color!”

Amidst the bold color statements of the Paola Lenti sofas and chairs on the terraced third level that overlooks the Caribbean, small details give the residence a finished fit. Maya Lin’s elliptical white tables, smooth teak cabana dividers and the sleek simplicity of a Viking kitchen make for sophisticated fun ‌ au natural.

A mobile chandelier from J. Batchelor casts a glow over the living area, while Luminaire provides additional sculptural lighting with a floor lamp twisting upward, and across the room, a spherical lamp within a lamp atop the corner occasional table from Artefacto. Just outside, Kettal furnishings form a social grouping to enjoy a sunny snack alfresco.

“TYPICALLY, I USE COLOR IN SUBTLE SPLASHES,” INTERIOR DESIGNER Juan Poggi says. “But these clients were totally fearless.” And the resulting color palette is a cartwheel of magentas, purples, reds and greens — all artfully grounded by hues of linen, white and cream. Poggi was first called to Aruba, the smallest of the “ABC” islands — Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao — three years ago when the condominium was but an empty shell. “I had the ability to place walls so that the resulting living space is simply filled with tropical light.” With such carte blanche, the designer opened the main living area to the second level via a 102

soaring balcony and blurred the boundaries between kitchen, dining and living areas below. But let’s start from the top. Just steps from the aqua waters of Eagle Beach, this three-story, 5,000-square-foot penthouse looks out to the Caribbean, most stunningly, from its rooftop terrace. “The wind is ever present on Aruba,” Poggi says. As a result, the seating areas are divided into enchanting cabanas with creamy but weather-worthy Sunbrella fabric curtains that give privacy and protection. Paola Lenti magenta-and-coral sofas, rope sphere chairs and pouf cocktail tables from Luminaire are beautifully designed — the woven-cord fabric impervious to the weather. Nearby, an eight-person hot tub hides behind one of Poggi’s

signature sculptural planters, while rich, red custom-designed tiles run the expanse of the stainless steel outdoor kitchen. As if a respite from the blinding blue of the sea and color-soaked sunsets, the main living area is a study in calm. White walls and pale marble flooring team with Poggi’s custom linen sofas and quartz-stone tabletop in a trance of tranquility. A sisal area rug, nesting teak cocktail tables and a wood-slat chair by B&B Italia all lend the feel of outdoors-in to the living area. Across the space, Poggi did not forget the dictum to play with color. Dramatic, purple-linen sofas and their generous beige pillows may suggest ‘don’t sit on me in a wet swimsuit,’ but “this is a family who loves the beach and wants a home in which they feel comfortable,” he says. “And the durable Perennials fabrics don’t mind a bit.” But nowhere is the ambiance of Aruba more on display than dining alfresco in the sweet, soft air of a tropical night. Sheltered beneath a simple Lucite canopy, the Parsons-like teak table is surrounded by aluminum geometric chairs by Roda as large lanterned candles sparkle in the night.

ABOVE: Diminutive by some standards, the main floor’s guest room pulls no punches. Bold in every other way,

the delicacy of Lunatika’s bed lamps atop the headboard’s built-out shelving make the space come alive, while eye-popping spheres on Elitis wall covering from Jeffrey Michaels provide an artistic focal point. 104

DRAWING UPON AN ILLUSTRIOUS HERITAGE for delivering meticulously rendered interiors for a worldwide clientele, interior designer Juan Montoya’s latest project in the exclusive Miami enclave of Golden Beach, Fla., exemplifies his holistic, custom-tailored design philosophy. Nestled on a barrier island that separates the Intracoastal Waterway from the Atlantic Ocean, this two-story, 10,000-square-foot estate is carefully sited to afford expansive views of the Intracoastal, and features eight bedrooms and baths with additional outdoor areas for al fresco entertaining and dining. Montoya’s history with the owners originated years ago; the wife’s parents are former clients for whom he designed homes in Colombia. “The daughter and her husband had been living in another community not far from Golden Beach, but when her parents purchased property here, the couple decided to build their own primary residence nearby to create a sort of family compound where they could all spend more time together,” says Montoya, who was given free reign with the home’s color and materials palette — presenting his clients with sketches of how he envisioned each space in accordance with their lifestyle.

Charged with designing an elegant yet comfortable and welcoming home to amply accommodate the owners and their combined families (including six children aged 15 to 20), Montoya’s services extended to all aspects of the home’s design, from fine-tuning the architectural plan and directing exterior detailing and landscaping, to providing full interior planning, design and furniture selection. “Attention to detail is what makes for a successful design,” the designer says of his philosophy. “Every decision, every element must be considered to work in harmony within the context of the whole.”

shallow coved ceiling finished in silver leaf. The furniture arrangement features another grouping of disparate pieces, including a new, customdesigned sofa paired with two ebony-framed 1920s chairs reupholstered in white chenille and a white-leather armchair from the 1950s. The living room also gives way to the formal dining area via a pair of custom-designed, Indonesian-style ebonized doors with rattan panels. The space is grounded by a grouping of Art Deco pieces purchased in Paris, including an ebony-wood table, buffet and eight chairs that Montoya had recovered in beige suede. Montoya added a layer of subtle texture by having the walls painted in a Venetian plaster-like finish that looks and feels like glove-soft suede. A favorite gathering space is the generous-sized family room, a combined library, media center and home theater defined by luxurious finishes and meticulous architectural features. “This space is all about texture, a juxtaposition of light and dark, and tactile finishes to lend a sense of warmth, comfort and relaxation,” Montoya says. Here, walls clad in floor-to-ceiling, ebony-framed panels of honeytoned oak wrap the space in warm, wood tones, while a comfortable grouping of deepseated pieces is arranged around a Japanese daybed used as a cocktail table. “I do not have a formula,” Montoya summarizes, “but I do have a style, which I imbue into every project. I like to think of myself as a tailor who selects the finest materials to clothe each interior in an appealing and comfortable way. Just as a tailor specifies every detail to measurement and dimension, so should each design element work together to compose one beautiful, harmonious creation.” . . . continued on page 118

Discover One of Earth’s Greatest Secrets Over a century ago, a 50-million-year-old secret was discovered in the high desert of Southern Wyoming: a fossilized lakebed that was once a tropical lake teeming with fish and plants in an environment ideal for fossil preservation. Moving layer upon layer of this dense limestone lakebed has led to the hand selection of the most intriguing fossilized material– including palm fronds, crocodiles, turtles and a variety of fish. Great skill and patience are required to bring these fossilized treasures to museums, including the Smithsonian and the American Museum of History, as well as private residences around the world.

BECKONED BY THE OCEAN The Transition From Mountainside To Beachfront Is Made Easier With Lightened Tones, Transparent Materials And A Laid-Back Attitude Suited To Life At Sea Level INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Myriam Rojas, M.Z. Design, Inc., Key Biscayne, FL TEXT Robin Hodes | PHOTOGRAPHY Daniel Newcomb, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

RISING UP ABOVE SOUTH FLORIDA’S KEY BISCAYNE, this two-story, 3,500-square-foot penthouse in the luxurious Ocean Club community provides the optimal vantage point to soak up the spoils of a tropical paradise. Still, for one Colombian family accustomed to a life nestled high in the Andes, coming here is, to a certain extent, coming down to earth. Frequent travelers to the Miami area, the homeowners were drawn to this well-appointed yet easygoing vacation retreat and its less-formal, less-hurried way of life than the couple, along with their two teenage boys and 3-year-old daughter, experience back home in Bogotá. Working within a tight time frame, architect, designer and general contractor Myriam Rojas handled all of the interiors and minor construction on the project. After visiting with the owners ABOVE: Interior architect and designer Myriam Rojas arranged the living room sofa, upholstered

in gray-green chenille and accented with pillows in Kravet’s bird and butterfly-patterned fabric, around four low tables by C&A for Longhi that form the cocktail table. Cabinetry from Jesse pays homage to the sea with its sandy walnut finish and marine-lacquered doors.

in Colombia to observe their tastes and lifestyle, Rojas pulled it all together in a mere four months — instilling a resort-like feel with light hues, translucent materials and the occasional infusion of oceaninspired elements. Organic materials and rustic touches lend warmth, while bursts of color add a dash of surprise. Promptly removing a more ornate wrought iron and gold stair rail in the foyer, Rojas replaced it with clear glass and stainless steel posts, which dramatically lightened up the space. Using the pinkish cast of the existing marble floors as a springboard, she then chose a salmon and silver hand-woven sisal area rug that the owners had custom made in Bogotá. The foyer flows into the living room, where Rojas, so as not to block the ocean view, cleverly arranged the pieces of a chenille sofa around four low tables configured to create a cocktail table. A black-leather Eames chair, perched atop a brick-patterned cowhide area rug from Artefacto, provides additional seating. RIGHT: An unusual seating formation in the dining room pairs Phillips Collection’s one-of-a-kind table from Addison House with modern chairs and a bench by Costantino Pietro. Here, bone leather mixes with beige-and-brown floral cotton fabric from Kravet.

The openness of the home’s layout made cohesiveness of color an essential element of the decor. Oranges and blues, as seen in practically every room, seem as natural together as the sunlight reflected off the sea.

The seamless blend of transitional and contemporary that styles the home is perhaps best illustrated in the dining room, where an ultra-modern, three-piece hanging sideboard, created in orange matte lacquer by Claudio Lovadino for Moco, sits beneath a rustic, knotted-pine mirror from Sharron Lewis Design Central. In an unexpected contrast to the rough edges of a table made from Thai chamcha wood, a twinkling crystal and pewter Schonbek chandelier imparts unabashed elegance and grandeur. Another nearby dining space, the breakfast area, is decidedly less formal, with a partial enclosure by way of a fixed custom panel of organic textured paper framed in walnut helping to make the shift. In order to perpetuate the ABOVE: A vignette in the corner of the dining room tells a story, and it’s one

of tranquility, with both a peaceful oil painting by Colombian artist Kamel Ilián and the Zen-like pouf and sliding table by Lievore Altherr Molina for Dona Living.

A favorite black-and-white photograph of New York’s Flatiron District that hangs in the den may call to mind urban hustle and bustle, but all the owners need to do is to put their feet up on the sturdy Brazilian peroba (a recycled wood) cocktail table from Environment and relaxation is quickly restored.

The media room’s frosted wall sconce from LBL Lighting is reminiscent of sea glass washed ashore, while a driftwood cocktail table from Artefacto drives the point home: this is oceanfront living at its finest. Vibrant accent pillows provide color to a pair of white-vinyl Innovation sofas.

Rojas describes this home’s style as transitional contemporary; it’s the inclusion of organic materials and rustic touches that serves to soften the edges and lend warmth.

relaxed attitude of the home, Rojas avoided any jarring color changes from room to room. “It is a very open layout, so the colors had to flow,” she says. The orange and turquoise seen elsewhere reappear in the den, where custom lacquer cabinets, and the owners’ own shag pillows and kilim area rug pull from the palette. The charcoal-suede sofa from American Leather is just the right place to curl up and kick back. Perhaps the biggest undertaking was the second-floor media room, where Rojas succeeded in enclosing a once-open space by adding walls and glass doors while still managing to preserve the airy, outdoor feel. Both the white-vinyl sofas and non-slip porcelain, faux bois-planked floors are casual and provide for easy maintenance. Accent pillows in peppy orange and pale blue add hints of both sun and sky. One can come inside from basking in the rays or soaking in the Jacuzzi, and unwind without a care. For the owners, the message is clear: when we’re here, we’re on vacation. ABOVE: Translucence is the theme of the breakfast area, where a Ferruccio Laviani acrylic

light fixture and four Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec acrylic chairs, all for Kartell, surround a chrome-and-glass table by Calligaris. Here, the homeowners take in lighter meals, along with the breathtaking views of the ocean below.

Brilliant in refinement, the great room’s Louis XV chairs are covered in a woven lampas by Brunschwig & Fils. A redlacquer and gilt Chinoiserie tray table from Jerry Pair sits center stage, while a magnificent, room-sized antique area rug from the owner’s collection unites the room’s array of morning hues.

TURNING THIS 8,000-SQUAREfoot italianate villa, its cerulean pool and two-story pool/guest house into a home that was at once livable and dramatically timeless began long before designer Robert Kevin Cassidy’s interior insights were envisioned. But, builder Michael Walker was there at the beginning. With a superbly positioned site on Sarasota Bay, Walker knew that, together with architect Rafael Portuondo and the homeowner, they were after something unique: “museum-quality construction” and an “eternal look.” It took five years to achieve, incorporating the likes of limebased, European exterior finishes from Emilio Cianfoni; the last vein of stunning Coralina stone imported from the Dominican Republic; and pillar capitals handcrafed by an artisan in Louisiana — but the owner’s desire for a home that looked as if it had happily dwelt on Siesta Key’s shores for a hundred years was fulfilled.

“I’m known for pairing a variety of fabrics,” designer Robert Kevin Cassidy says. Reds and golds, florals and buttery textured surfaces combine to create the allure of a century past.

And after a 2004 mini-renovation, the aesthetic of several other designers, and one major life change, the owner turned to Cassidy for what he hoped would be the defining interior statement. “My client is a very visual person that aims for perfection, and he has wonderful taste as well,” the designer says. “I simply steered him toward pieces that he found truly beautiful.” First impressions are of epic import on this estate that spans more than two-acres. Just inside, a great room opens to a view that ABOVE: The gallery’s terra cotta-stained Venetian chairs by Caché covered in a

“Over the five years it took to complete the building of the house, we must have had over 1,000 people in and out,” Walker says. “Every detail needed to be worked.” 150

reaches beyond the rear loggia to the bay. Keeping the spacious gathering room bright against afternoon shade, Cassidy mixed three hues of yellow for the hand-plastered walls. Groin vaults appear at each door opening, while a limestone fireplace imported from England anchors the space. As if peonies and dahlias were scattered about, fabrics in carnelian and red awaken every corner. Nearby, an elegant barrel-vaulted gallery is dotted with extravagant Venetian-style chairs and divans. But nowhere is the regal elegance the owner relishes more apparent than in the formal dining room. In a glazed and lacquered Chinese red, the walls provide the perfect backdrop for an 1870s gilded mirror and the stately English sideboard in refined burledelm. Auffray chairs upholstered in patterned silk surround the owner’s antique table as the palette of reds, shrimp and indigo resonates in the area rug below. Striking a complementary balance between masculine and sumptuous, Cassidy kept the master bedroom’s furnishings simple but luxurious. The black finish of the canopied Michael Taylor bed is accompanied by rich

from the bay into the master bedroom, where Cassidy “floats” the canopied bed near the center of the space. The backside of the sumptuously finished bed-hanging makes for a wall that suggests a private space, while “Matriarch” by Chinese artist Hu Jundi presides over a sitting area with a tufted barrel chair by Edward Ferrell and a Rose Tarlow armchair from Holly Hunt.

brandy-taupe bed-hangings embroidered in a Chinese tree of life motif from the Florio Collection. Drapery panels by Nancy Corzine are tied high with tassels for optimal light to bounce off taupe-washed walls and the bold vermillion of the antique area rug. Just as Cassidy played with a panoply of vibrant interior colors, the soft hand-applied textures of a Mediterranean Renaissance are awash outside. The loggia’s ceiling soars in a robin’s egg blue, walls shimmer in a faded gouache of shrimp and orange, and the lush green lawn and sparkling blue bay play their part. But it is the the loggia’s massive pillars that turns heads from the waterway. Thrusting over 20 feet skyward, each pillar was turned, rather than cast, and displays intricate sculptured forms of Florida birdlife at its capital. With the final harmonies of aged exterior and warmly elegant interiors at last in play, Cassidy muses: “My favorite thing after such a long process … my client’s desires were well served,” he says. “Knowing that, together, we’ve created a home.”

nside these pages: British West Indies Style showcases the interiors, architecture and furnishings of the English Colonial great homes and historic townhouses on the islands in the Caribbean — from the British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Nevis, Antigua and beyond, to the less-traveled islands of St. Lucia, Dominica, Bequia, St. Vincent and Mustique. West Indian decorative arts scholar and author Michael Connors provides a rare glimpse into as many as 50 private homes of the islands’ affluent, both historical and contemporary. Devoted to preserving as well as promoting the environmental, cultural and architectural integrity of the airy, island lifestyle, Connors has successfully composed this comprehensive study. For the first time, a wide variety of data has been compiled to celebrate the material culture and traditions of English island great houses and the island-crafted furniture inside them. Set against the backdrop of a tropical paradise, the Caribbean islands are steeped in the splendor of a lavish architectural past. The English island “style of choice” for the earlier seaside architecture transitioned easily to new cultural motifs as the allure of island living found its way into contemporary interior design.

DESIGN CORNER

A WHOLE NEW WORLD Mixing top designers with a redesign of the brand, Kettal introduces a world of new products for 2011. TEXT Kim Mosley

A

new look, a new take ... Kettal’s cutting-edge philosophy follows on the heels of receiving one of the highest accolades awarded in Spain — the National Design Prize 2010. Increasingly design-oriented, Kettal’s approach to the concept of its furniture mixes the “tried and true” with the “bold and new.” In addition to the innovative collections created by its team of renowned international designers including Rodolfo Dordoni, Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders, Hella Jongerius and Emiliana Design Studio, Kettal has its own design, research and development studio. The Kettal Studio designs its own projects and supports the development of external projects. To drive innovation, the Kettal Studio organizes concept creation groups with young designers from different cultures and disciplines. The result: a fresh furniture design that packs quite a punch.

company’s 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility located in Brazil. With an emphasis on the environment, Artefacto incorporates an eclectic series of products with a mix of materials. The overall look is international, borrowing from the contemporary flair of northern Italy, the sensuality of southern France and the simplicity of Asian culture — all blended with the spice and casual lifestyle of Brazil. Artefacto’s contemporary yet classic furnishings are comprised of two extraordinary collections, the original Artefacto collection and the new Passport collection. Both feature clean lines and fine materials, but the Passport collection adds a new twist. “This collection is not manufactured in our factory in Brazil,” Bacchi says. “Different pieces are made by various artisans and local designers that bring an individuality to our stores.” Celebrating its 35th year, Artefacto’s philosophy remains the same: design, function and value. And it is with this mission in mind that the company has been able to expand on such a global basis. Today, in addition to having a presence in all major capital cities throughout Brazil, the Artefacto brand has also made a stand in the United States, including with its latest showroom in Aventura, a 40,000-square-foot space that debuted last April on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard. And within the next couple of years, the brand will continue to flourish throughout the world. It is with this vision for growth that positions Artefacto as a leading source in design for both contemporary and classic furnishings that radiate with style. The Harp family was already familiar with Calderin’s work when they decided to work with the firm. Confident in their talent and experience, they allowed the company free reign of the design. In fact, their only two requests were that their home be highly modern, and that it have lots of red. From there, Calderin was able to create a home that was truly reflective of both their style and his own. Individuality has always been key for the company, so Calderin created lots of custom pieces, including a dimensional wall treatment made of asymmetrical red glass panels. Wooden archways highlight each of the major areas, ensuring that even the most minor detail is dripping with style. The use of glass, natural stones and dark woods serve as a backdrop for newer technologies, like the infinity tub in the master bath, the open, three-piece fireplace in the great room and the two-way mirror that allows the television to be viewed from anywhere throughout the entire master suite. It actualized itself into a truly special home that is personal to the tastes of the client as well as the designer. Built in the footprint of a 1950s ranch house, this modern interpretation of an Old Florida-style home is nestled unobtrusively into its environment, surrounded by 100-year-old live oaks, and citrus and maple trees.

BROUGHT TO FRUITION by architect David Barrett, the aptly named, 4,000-square-foot “Tropical House,” which is situated on an acre of land in the downtown Orlando suburb of College Park, features a modern, contemporary design and clean, angular lines. Forging a relationship between the construction of the house and the natural world, Barrett created a vision of contemporary green architecture and sustainable style, even building the home around its surrounding 100-year-old live oaks so as not to disturb their root systems. “We seek spirit in architecture,” Barrett says, “and the two are inexorably intertwined. Each sacred place is an outgrowth of a poetic seed — a Gestalt — and my goal is to protect and celebrate the natural beauty of the environment.” Custom built for homeowner Summer Rodman and her husband, Steven McCall, this primary home reflects their casual sophistication, world travels and passion for Tibetan and Asian art, which is nonchalantly integrated into the decor. Clean lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, open areas and varying roof heights create spaciousness, light and dramatic interior volumes ABOVE: Turner custom designed the great room’s sofa and lounge chairs, covered in Norbar linen and accented with silk and mohair pillows by Donghia and Holly Hunt. A “Nelson Ball Pendant” light fixture illuminates from above the sofa, while area rugs from Carpet Source provide subtle texture below.

In the kitchen, quartersawn walnut cabinetry joins the smooth finish of Zodiaq quartz countertops for a visual yet functional aesthetic. that form a sanctuary for their busy lives. While the outside’s verdant foliage elicits a sense of serenity and transcendence, so too does the use of natural materials indoors — bamboo flooring, cypress ceilings and walnut cabinetry — forming a seamless transition between inside and out. “The furniture, with its clean lines and minimalistic approach, is designed to engage and accentuate the architecture,” says designer Robert Turner, who custom-created almost all of the home’s furnishings. Starting in the bright and airy great room, with its 15-foot-high, vaulted ceilings and picturesque views of the garden and lake, the designer created three seating groups to promote conversation and socializing in an intimate setting. Here, China White walls form a neutral background, allowing the tropical hues of light orange, pale green and citron to complement the cool terrazzo floors. “I created a warm and comfortable environment for my clients that reflects who they are; to have a great living space in which to live, play and entertain,” Turner says. In the nearby kitchen, cabinetry composed of handcrafted, quartersawn walnut offsets the room’s cool white Zodiaq quartz countertops, where curved edges hit a striking, geometric note with a contrast of textures. “Both Steven and I love to cook so the kitchen is the hub

“I’ve created a design for living with longevity and integrity that reflects my clients’ lifestyles and hopefully inspires them as well,” says Turner, whose own inspirations come from Philippe Starck and Mies van der Rohe.

of our household,” Rodman says. “And with the extra island space, we can cook together in peace.” Upstairs, French doors open out onto a balcony off Rodman’s office, where mementos from her grandmother — antique hats and Japanese lamps — grace the shelves, rose-colored walls and fabrics emit a sunset hue, and flokati-covered 1950s lounge chairs, also a legacy from her grandmother, beckon with their shaggy

In the guest room, a pair of armless lounge chairs from Lee Industries covered in Villa Roma linen fronts the customdesigned bed under a George Nelson-designed light fixture. Donghia’s “Anziano” desk chair pulls up to a zebra and wenge-wood desk designed for maximum ease and comfort.

white comfort. Double-pane, tinted windows reminiscent of shoji screens encourage natural light and modulate the heat from the sun. These windows reappear in the guest room, where a customdesigned, floating-slab platform bed provides visual interest while echoing the light hue of the bamboo floor. In addition to Tibetan objets d’art collected on a sojourn to Tibet, Nepal and Thailand, Rodman’s eclectic taste runs to Los Angeles artist Souther Salazar and Orlando painter Fritz Stinebaugh, whose formidable Kabuki dancer looks down from the wall, adding a dramatic intensity juxtaposed with the understated simplicity of this space. This refined look continues throughout the residence, resulting in a welcoming environment in which the owners feel very much at home.

CHARLES R. STINSON ARCHITECTS

Through landscaping and meticulous siting, Stinson gives the home privacy without sacrificing warmth or the dramatic views toward the lake. Beyond the granite confine, the monolithic limestone-panel shell of the home gracefully unfolds to reveal teak-wood siding and glimpses of warm interior palettes. The U-shaped plan forms a private auto court with 40 geothermal wells below the granite pavers for heating and cooling the house. A three-story, glass stair tower anchors the folding limestone forms and spirals up to a green rooftop terrace complete with fireplace and unmatched views of the downtown skyline. The green roof filters and collects water for irrigating the lawn and the rest of the roof is prepped for future photovoltaic panels. Adjacent to the stair tower, the main entry opens onto Pietra Serena stone floors, bronze columns and a gently curving privacy wall with soft light grazing down its Venetian plaster finish. The foyer flows into the primary living spaces brought down to human scale by teak soffits and the tactile fabrics of the contemporary furnishings. In addition, the interior features almost 20 custom pieces of art and sculpture. Triple-paned windows with teak frames, operable transoms for cross-ventilation, a sleek, modern Italian kitchen, co-op harvested spaulted maple floors, a state-of-the-art fitness room, a spacious wine cellar, four bedroom suites each with its own private bath, and a master suite nested into the most secluded wing of the house complete this stunning home. A

s both an artist and designer, creative powerhouse Debra Yates has been reinterpreting the design of Key West for the past 13 years. And whether she is creating an abstract painting or an interior space, Yates considers herself a modernist — a quality that she expertly displays in her design of the Truman Hotel. With its stunning color palette, minimalist furnishings and artistic accents imbued into every detail, the Truman Hotel is one of Key West’s latest boutique hotels. Yates, who was commissioned for the project after working on the renovation of another one of the owner’s famed establishments, the Blue Marlin Motel, took the plans for a 35-room, pseudo conch-style hotel and transformed them into a trendy resort. Uncomplicated and stylish, clean-lined and edgy, the hotel boasts the artist’s signature stamp, from her own colorful, abstract paintings to her selection of the “Delano-style” lounge music that permeates throughout the pool area. Key West architecture, the hotel features a sloping metal roof, which Yates accented with the bold hues of ochre yellow, burnt orange and olive green. “I used six different shades of color to accentuate the volumes,” she says, “and silver to blend the trim into the metal roofing.” Also providing color, as well as shade, to the spacious pool area and walkways is Yates’ perfect placement of the landscaping. and had craned over the threestory building, adorn the deck, where a heated pool features spouting jets. For warmth, Yates designed a water wall feature made of chiseled stone veneer. Comfortable lounge chairs allow for opulent seating over the decking’s tumbled stone. An array of outdoor areas continue up onto the hotel’s second and third levels, where South Beach hip combines with Key West casual for rooms that accommodate up to four and suites that sleep up to six. Each room features bold colors and minimalist furnishings, along with modern lighting, tile floors and zebraprint area rugs. Sleek lines and stainless steel accents complete the modern, edgy look. Located in the heart of Old Town Key West, the Truman Hotel is an oasis one block from Duval Street and only a short walk to all of the city’s attractions — from the Southernmost Point, to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Hemingway’s House and, of course, Key West’s famous sunsets. And along with the hotel’s knowledgeable staff and its high-tech amenities, which include wireless Internet available throughout, Yates continues to add exciting details and new furnishings as her artistic statement is refined. “Whether you walk into the courtyard or the rooms, the total ambiance has a calming effect,” she says. “I had complete aesthetic control of almost every aspect of the hotel, and my recognizable stamp fuses good, creative design with an edge. The music, colors, even the sound of the water; every attention to detail quietly displays one artist’s creative vision.” For reservations, call the hotel at 866/4TRUMAN.

SPACE TO GROW . . . continued

Atkins and Pranich opened Tui Lifestyle’s first showroom of upscale, “delivered in 72 hours” furnishings in the Miami Design District in 2008, followed by its headquarters and large showroom in North Miami in 2010. From the start, the company has attracted a stylesavvy, international clientele. Currently, Tui Lifestyle offers nine distinct collections, which include everything from exquisitely designed, custom furnishings, to artwork, accessories, sheets and towels, fine china, bath essentials, and even flat screen TVs and fresh flowers — each custom fit to the individual to form a modern, contemporary yet classic style. This exciting innovation in high-style interior design has captivated wealthy clients and celebrities, as well as developers in Miami and New York. In Florida alone, Tui Lifestyle has furnished 22 condo buildings with 45 residence models. After two years, Atkins and Pranich have built Tui Lifestyle into a major industry in Florida and are poised to expand both nationally and internationally. From just three employees in 2008, to a staff of over 55 in a 285,000-square-foot facility, the brand continues with its latest New York store in SoHo. This showroom launches the company’s new expansion and marks its first step toward company-operated enterprises and authorized dealers nationwide. And with its expansion into new markets, Tui Lifestyle plans to offer designs inspired by these diverse locales. More than mere furnishings, Tui Lifestyle options are a visionary approach to the art of living well with packages ranging in price from $10,000 to over $50,000.
