DIDA HOME The multi-faceted interior design team of Diana Uribe and David Miranda creates fresh contemporary interiors with a curatorial vision inspired by art and nature. TEXT BY SUSAN SHERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY TROY CAMPBELL, MIAMI, FL

I

nterior designer Diana Uribe first met architect David Miranda during college in Equador, and after discovering their mutual passion for furniture design, they decided to form the Miami-based

interior design firm of DIDA Home in 2010. Together with Uribe’s artistic eye for furniture design and construction expertise, and Miranda’s architectural vision, space planning and meticulous eye for detail, they create truly unique, custom-designed interiors with what they call, “an organic modern aesthetic.” In a Key Biscayne, Fla., home, above, the designers display their penchant for art and nature in the dining area, where Kaleidoscope, a butterfly photograph by Briana Sophia, dresses a wall in sky blue and

nparalleled comfort, superior quality, and timeless silhouettes — these are all characteristics of Minotti’s trademark design. The family owned Milanese

brand has honed its expertise over a rich 60-year history and the decision of where to reside is not taken lightly. That being the case, Miami is only the fourth city in the nation dynamic enough to harness one of the industry’s most shining stars. The 10,000-square-foot showroom was conceived and transformed by the Minotti Studio in Italy with a vision to create a luxurious and creative platform to showcase vignettes of the Minotti style. Stunning architectural elements are found throughout — not surprisingly, being that the company’s illustrious Artistic Director, Rodolfo Dordoni, is himself an architect. “Rodolfo identifies the smallest details that others might not notice — the seat depth or curvature of a sofa,

EDITED TO PERFECTION AN INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED DESIGN TEAM CREATES A “NEW STORY” FOR A BAL HARBOUR COUPLE’S CONDOMINIUM THAT INTEGRATES OPEN INTERIORS WITH STYLISH MODERN FURNISHINGS INTERIOR DESIGN BY JAY BRITTO AND DAVID CHARETTE, BRITTO CHARETTE LLC, MIAMI, FL, AND NEW YORK, NY TEXT BY CHRISTINE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARMEL AND ROBERT BRANTLEY, DELRAY BEACH, FL

F

or the interiors of this 2,700-square-foot Majestic Tower residence in Bal Harbour, Fla., the design team of Jay Britto and David Charette blended innovative new pieces with

sophisticated original elements. The designers wanted to create a “new story” by updating this condominium for their clients, a surgeon and his wife who had lived there for 14 years. “The owners had heavy, built-in furnishings with partially covered windows that took space out of their floor plan,” Britto says. They had already renovated the kitchen which established the interior’s overall color palette — white with a hue the designers label as “gray oak” — a variation of charcoal. The couple also love to travel and had accumulated art pieces along the way. “We had to edit their collection and create shelving for display,” Charette says.

The design team of Britto Charette created the perfect seating solution in the den with sculptural, chrome-based swivel chairs by Folie. Covered in a gray cotton blend, the chairs can be positioned easily for conversation or rotated to view the TV.

In the living room, the designers created an understated, modern theme with functionality, clean lines and enhanced lighting. A simple seating arrangement clustered in front of floor-to-ceiling windows features two classic sofas by CasaDesús covered in plush white chenille and decorated with Missoni’s gold accent pillows to add elegance. A chrome-based cocktail table topped with black glass and a leather bench custom-designed by Britto Charette, blends perfectly into the minimalist grouping. Anchoring the space is Arravanti’s area rug, a patchwork of recycled antique carpets in shades of ivory, gray and black. The dining area’s stunning water views are enhanced by a James R. Moder crystal chandelier from Lumens that sparkles above a glass and chrome table bordered by Addison House taupe leather-clad chairs.

IN THE MASTER BEDROOM, A CASADESÚS ARMCHAIR CLAD IN A NEUTRAL-TONED CHENILLE ALONG WITH A MATCHING OTTOMAN, IS POSITIONED BY WIDE SLIDING GLASS DOORS TO CAPTURE THE SPECTACULAR WATER VIEW.

A large custom cabinet, once situated in the den, had partially obstructed the ocean view. The designers decided to remove the piece and replace it with a clean-lined, Sangiacomo modular system finished in white-and-gray matte lacquer. In front of a sofa reupholstered by Soto Design in a tightweave chenille, a trio of lacquered stools designed by Jesse S.p.a. for Arravanti add a whimsical touch. Drama is conveyed in the master bedroom with a custom wall that serves as a headboard. Designed by Britto Charette, it is clad in Maharam’s pearlized upholstered panels that are framed in dark-gray oak. To create their signature look, the designers like to add texture to wall surfaces. “We believe that wall coverings add a finishing touch and richness to every room,” Britto says. nspired by early 20th-century designer Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative ideas, design duo Brett Sugerman and Giselle Loor-Sugerman create high-end, warm, livable and contemporary designs. This approach

is reflected in one couple’s home in The St. Regis Bal Harbour that hugs the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. “We’re lucky … we have both the yin and the yang, husband and wife, male and female perspectives,” the design team says. “Our clients really get a pair of designers in tune with their lifestyle.” Walking into this 4,141-square-foot beachfront condominium, an angular ceiling design leads the eye through the hallway, into the living room and beyond to the panoramic seascape. “The ocean is outside,

it’s not the focal point,” Sugerman says. “We design the inside. Of course we want the homeowner to enjoy the view, but it’s our job to make the inside equally as beautiful.” Dividing the condo in half, the front hall posed a challenge for the design team. “This long wall is the first impression of the space,” the designer says. “We wanted to make a statement but tie in the whole design.” They went with a geometric theme in complementary contrast to the polished Oasis marble flooring that flows throughout. The design team wanted to be sure the social spaces were as livable as possible. “We have children, so we understand what it’s like. You don’t want kids walking around like it’s a museum,” Loor-Sugerman says. Resilient fabrics wrap the living room furnishings, while a durable, wool and silk area rug by B+G Design exemplifies their “form follows function” mantra. Between the unified marble flooring and the light, crisp feeling of the white quartz countertops, the “heart of the home” remains open and connected to the dining area. The designers completely customized

the kitchen to make it spacious and functional. “We literally sculpt spaces like artists,” Sugerman says. “We try to integrate architecture with interior design.” Though the stunning ocean view caters to the calming aura in the master bedroom, it did present a unique challenge that required Loor to situate the bed opposite of where one might expect. To make up for the placement, sleek, geometric cabinetry lines the opposing wall, while parallel lighting units in the ceiling continue the serenity. “We took into account that a bedroom is used mostly in the evening which means lighting is important ... we always think about spaces from day to night,” the designer says. “Brett is just really amazing at sculpting these spaces,” Loor-Sugerman says. “We are so influenced by the places we see together when we travel.” With a shared vision but different strengths, this design team gives their clients the best of both worlds. “We can really make their visions come to life,” she says.

QUESTION:

ANSWER:

Jader Almeida and Paulo Bacchi

Did you always want to be a furniture designer? Yes. From the time I was 16 years old, when

I apprenticed with a cabinetmaker and took technical courses such as mechanical design, I realized I would be an artist of some kind, or that I would build houses or bridges. I was not likely to become an astronaut or football player!

JADER ALMEIDA FOR ARTEFACTO The luminaries of Brazilian furniture form an exciting partnership with a glowing design star. TEXT BY ROBIN HODES

QUESTION: What do you think about when you are designing?

ANSWER:

I always think about the person who will ultimately

be using the furniture. I want it to bring out his or her best side. I design not for show, but for real living. QUESTION:

ANSWER:

What are some characteristics of your pieces?

I strive to keep my pieces flexible, because every

home has a different scale and personality. Regardless of the size, I impart a feeling of “lightness” and “weightlessness.” QUESTION:

What is it about the 1950s and 1960s era that

inspires you? ANSWER:

In Brazil, these decades marked a movement

towards minimalism and open spaces. Gone was the heavy, crowded feeling as well as the use of elaborate carving and detailing. Furniture became lighter and more elegant, and that is what appeals to me. QUESTION:

Do you consider your work “timeless?”

ANSWER:

Absolutely. In fact, my designs become more

beautiful over time. I like to think of furniture as having a life. Therefore, I choose to work with materials that age with dignity — such as wood, brass and leather. QUESTION:

ANSWER:

How do your designs relate to Artefacto’s brand? It’s difficult to explain, as it is more about a

“feeling” and a “sense.” Artefacto is known for larger

ne of the hottest design talents in the industry has arrived in America. The celebrated Brazilian furnishings brand, Artefacto, introduces the preeminent wonder boy of Brazilian design, Jader

Almeida, to the U.S. market with a 3,000-square-foot “shop in shop” — a space within Artefacto Home in Aventura dedicated to featuring iconic pieces from the design star’s trademark collection. Almeida utilizes a neutral color palette with raw and natural tones, as well as unique materials that stress the synchronization between a timeless design concept and excellence of fabrication. His work includes curvaceous seating inspired by the ’60s, minimalistic lighting fixtures in splendid metallic finishes, and unusual stools of cork and marble. This is the first time the pieces will be showcased as one cohesive collection within the United States, and will be both exposed and sold through Artefacto. “Jader’s style revolves around warmness and simplicity, key characteristics that are also ingrained in Artefacto,” says Paulo Bacchi, CEO of Artefacto USA and Brand Advisor of Artefacto Brazil. Both Almeida and Artefacto’s furniture is representative of Brazilian design in their creation of constructive pieces that embody both practicality and sustainability. 305/931-9484; www.artefacto.com; www.jaderalmeida.com M

QUESTION:

ANSWER:

Architect and Interior Designer Débora Aguiar

From where do you draw your inspiration?

From the natural environment. I am continuously

inspired by nature in the form of shapes, lighting, wood, textures, fibers and natural stone. As a designer I believe that I have a duty to develop projects that incorporate sustainable techniques and materials. QUESTION:

What projects have brought you the most

satisfaction and why? ANSWER:

All of my projects bring me great satisfaction and

I am always looking for new challenges. The one-bedroom unit I designed in 1 Hotel & Homes in Miami’s South Beach gave me the opportunity to work with different materials, textures, reused wood and other sustainable design. QUESTION:

ANSWER:

Why do you enjoy working with Artefacto?

Artefacto represents some of the world’s finest

lines in quality and luxury design. We recently worked with them on a special collection of furniture that is inspired by nature and is crafted with sustainable materials. QUESTION:

ANSWER:

What makes Brazilian design different?

Flexibility and adaptability — there are no limits as

to what we can achieve. When we use rustic and natural elements along with noble materials it produces the sophisticated result that we love to create. QUESTION:

ANSWER:

What are you working on now?

design firm that boasts an impressive portfolio of projects in the United States and throughout the world. The designer’s signature style combines warmth and sophistication in furnishings crafted with sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, stone and natural fibers. One of Aguiar’s projects, the redesign of a unit in 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach, was inspired by the hotel’s beautiful beachfront property. o not let appearances deceive you. This contemporary condominium is not your ordinary clean, white and

uncluttered space. A study in yin and yang, its furnishings and other elements when woven together create a subtly cohesive whole, which is exactly what interior designer Jessica Jaegger set out to accomplish in this 4,700-square-foot condominium at Residence du Cap on Williams Island in Aventura, Fla. Elements that are contemporary and classic, black and white, straightlined and curvy, relaxed yet edgy — Jaegger tames them all and deftly guides them into place. Perhaps the designer’s expertise arises from her background in law, where logic and order reign supreme, combined with her native creativity and predisposition

Illuminated by a whimsical chandelier, the dining area is an imaginative space, where every dining chair is uniquely crafted. Renowned designer Maarten Baas created the “Smoke” chairs, available from Moooi, with backs that appear broken in different areas. While the lines are similar to traditional antique chairs, these are created with carbon fiber, a material that echoes the entry door.

sense and a wide appreciation of architecture. He had just a few specific requirements that included an Aspen sofa designed by Jean-Marie Massaud from Cassina, a customdesigned chandelier by his friend, German industrial designer Ingo Maurer, and the inclusion of carbon fiber and leather elements. His wife, a former model, had her own set of considerations. A lover of fashion, she desired curvy, feminine and softer elements as well as comfortable pieces for the children. To satisfy both, the designer decided to revamp the layout of their 1980s, 28th-floor condominium by taking down walls and reassigning spaces to create a larger, more open plan. In the living area, a predominantly white palette is emboldened by a broad stroke of black accented with gray and red. “The curves of the armless Aspen sofa, the gray and red rounded puffs, and the black Zaha Hadid “Moon” sofa appear modern, romantic and ladylike,” Jaegger says. Walls upholstered in durable white leather complement flooring covered in gleaming white crystal stone from Opustone. Potent at the point of entry is a massive door finished in black carbon fiber. “It’s six feet wide,” the designer says. “I had to work with my carpenter and a sports car body shop to create it.” The dining area integrates the wife’s desire for ease and comfort with the husband’s passion for design, and an affinity for the unusual. “The carbon fiber “Smoke” chairs

are outrageous, but the Baltus table is simple and white without details,” Jaegger says. Over the top and audacious, the spotlight is on the Ingo Maurer chandelier. “It is an explosion of broken plates, cups and silver flatware with silk butterflies flying out — it does not look real,” the designer says. A painting on the back wall, Lady Face by Thai artist Paitoon Jumee, appears as if it is escaping from the canvas. “Nothing is static — it is all very playful, fluid and spontaneous.”

Simple, feminine and uncluttered, the master bedroom displays Jaegger’s flair for form and texture. Mirrored and leather-padded walls create an elegant backdrop behind a leather platform bed adorned with houndstoothpatterned accent pillows and Solis hanging pendants from Pablo, that are shaded in black silk. Opposite, a custom, high-gloss lacquered wall component incorporates a desk and shelving mounted on silk-striped wallcovering.

Custom shelving in the study area showcases accessories and artifacts but also stands alone as a sculpture. “Ordinarily a library or study will have shelving, but in this case it is all an illusion,” Jaegger says. “We wanted to create an office space, but we did not want it to look that way.” The master bedroom, the wife’s domain, lends a slightly curvaceous and softer feel warmed by an expanse of chocolate-brown wenge-wood flooring. A wall comprised of mirror and three panels clad in

subtly undulating ivory-tufted leather create an elegant backdrop behind a leather platform bed from Casa Dio, and from Fendi Casa, a pair of high-gloss lacquered Canova chests with serpentine lines. Defined by a black cowhide area rug, a sitting area offers a masculine contrast outfitted with an Eames lounge chair and ottoman clad in black leather, and a tiered walnut stool that serves as an accent table. The guest bedroom is designed with custom wall shelving by Jaegger that is crafted in two depths of white-lacquered and walnut wood. Integrated within the space is a shell-shaped Sharron Lewis desk chair created in stainless steel. In this pleasing “furniture garden” of fantastic forms and fluid organic shapes set in a monochromatic landscape, Jaegger created the perfect home — bold and modern for the husband, soft and feminine for the wife, and durable and comfortable for the children.

hen interior designer John Barman first saw the Bal Harbour condominium that he had been

commissioned to decorate, he was instantly taken with the 6,500-square-foot space. Stunning

180-degree vistas of the Atlantic Ocean seen through floor-to-ceiling walls of glass caught his eye and his imagination. “I couldn’t get over the views,” he says. Barman worked with the couple on their home up north. But now that they were moving to Bal Harbour, Fla., he had his work cut out for him in this unit perched on the 20th floor of an existing high rise. The previous owners had joined two condos and gutted the space — but that’s as far as they got. “There was excellent square footage and a great view, but nothing else,” Barman says. Now it was up to him to reconfigure the space to showcase about 150 pieces of art and artifacts that his clients had collected during their travels to Turkey, India, France and the American Southwest. He began by looking at photos of the pieces that the couple wanted to display. And then there were the crates … seven of them delivered to the unfinished unit and opened in front of him. Inside were pieces of art glass that the clients wanted to actually “build” into the interior. “I was surprised by the quantity but eager to work with the vast collection,” the designer says. Step inside, where a pristine interior is upbeat and inviting with walls, ceilings and shiny glass-tile flooring in white. “This is South Florida after all and the white provides a sunny, resort feel,” Barman

says of the interior scheme dotted with touches of black by design. “The dark colors help ground the house during cooler weather or rainy days.” Lacquer, glass and Lucite pieces offer a very fresh look that seems to shine in the living room, where Holly Hunt sectional sofas are set in opposite directions to shape two separate conversation groupings in one social setting. The Lucite chairs are vintage Rus Steele; the cantilevered, glass-topped occasional tables on polished stainless steel bases are a vintage Ron Seff design that is still in production.

The light fixture over the Knoll table in the kitchen may look familiar to opera buffs. Made by A. Rudin, it’s a smaller version of the fixtures in the concert hall of New York’s Metropolitan Opera. The Robert Kuo lacquer cherries on the black granite countertop add shape and color to the streamlined white cabinetry by Poliform.

Barman admits that, if he could, he’d like to spend time sitting in the living room with his feet up enjoying the view. But at night, when the ocean looks more like ink than azure, you can turn your back to it and enjoy the colorful art displayed throughout the room. The designer is particularly proud of the three art-glass panels from the owners’ collection that he built into the front of the wet bar — they look like they were made for this spot. To the right of the bar is the game table, where a chess set by Charles Hollis Jones sits ready for play. The couple admired and owned some of the work by this artist

who pioneered acrylic design in the 1970s. So they tracked him down in Los Angeles and commissioned him to create works for this home. A formal dining room conveniently flows into the living room to offer the perfect entertaining venue for the couple’s many charitable events. Illuminated Art Deco-style glass panels by artist Gene Lutz edge the space with shimmering light. In the foyer, the couple’s Southwestern artifacts are on display along with other sculptures. A dozen high-gloss painted niches create order with each shelf individually lit for easy viewing. Organization is key in the kitchen as well. “The whole room is sleek and easy to clean with every item stored in its own place,” Barman says. Charles Hollis Jones Lucite stools — some vintage and some newly crafted — pull up to the counter topped in black granite. Custom-designed, black and white wall tiles help break up the whiteness of the space complete with an open breakfast area. The media room is a must for the man of the house who is a sports fan. It is carefully insulated with ultra-suede drapes and wall coverings. “They give the room a womb-like feeling with exceptional sound quality,” the designer says. The elevated glass-top of the Dakota Jackson cocktail table spins for easy reach of the popcorn. “We wanted our clients to come home to an exciting space complete with all of the art and artifacts that color their life,” Barman says. “That was our mission.”

WELL-APPOINTED GETAWAY A MIAMI CONDOMINIUM COMBINES CUSTOM DESIGN WITH A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW ARCHITECTURE BY KURT J. DANNWOLF, ODP ARCHITECTS, INC., HOLLYWOOD, FL INTERIOR DESIGN BY LACHMEE CHIN, ODP ARCHITECTS, INC., HOLLYWOOD, FL TEXT BY CHARLOTTE SAFAVI PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEN HAYDEN, MIAMI BEACH, FL

aving an inside track helps in the race to the top. Architect Kurt Dannwolf was intimately familiar with

Miami’s Four Seasons Hotel and Tower, including its luxury residences, when hired to redo one of the condominiums on an upper floor. “I’d been the project architect for the building with my previous firm, part of the original design team,” Dannwolf says. The architect, who began his own business more than a decade ago, has also custom-designed 30 of the skyscraper’s residential units, which became part of the firm’s calling card. “Our clients loved what we showed them, because each apartment was very different, and they knew we weren’t going to be cookie cutter in our approach,” Dannwolf says. “We would design everything to suit their particular preference and lifestyle.” The homeowners, whose primary residence is in the Northeast, are empty nesters with two college-age sons. Their intent was to use the 2,200-square-foot condominium as a weekend or seasonal getaway from the cold weather and their everyday lives. “They liked the idea that the address has a hotel attached to it,” Dannwolf says. “When they have guests, they can book them right into the hotel.”

ODP ARCHITECTS DESIGNED BOTH THE LIT NICHES AND THE CUSTOM PEDESTALS FOR THE OWNERS’ ART COLLECTION DISPLAYED THROUGHOUT THE HOME.

“Our overall architectural plan was to open up and reconfigure the entire space,” says Dannwolf, who worked closely on the project with the firm’s interior designer Lachmee Chin. “Specifically, the homeowners said they didn’t want a traditional kitchen or a designated dining room. They jokingly said they’d be eating out all the time.” What the clients did want was a fun, intimate and contemporary space for the two of them, which could also expand and be comfortable for the occasions they had friends or family visiting. The design team began the transformation by completely gutting the apartment, and then exposing the once-enclosed kitchen and rearranging that space into one large main area with an open floor plan that incorporates the former living and dining rooms.

“WE DESIGNED A HOME THAT NOT ONLY LOOKS BEAUTIFUL BUT ALSO PROVIDES STORAGE FOR GLASSES, CUTLERY, BARWARE AND PERSONAL ITEMS,” INTERIOR DESIGNER LACHMEE CHIN SAYS.

“We created spatial definition through the ceilings, as well as places to hide the new infrastructure,” Chin says. “There are special coffers, pop-downs and pop-ups in the ceiling planes. The pop-ups also reinforce the furniture plan below and solidify the overall design.” However, the most dramatic element is indisputably the 30’-foot-long, backlit wall of exotic, grained, white quartzite that leads from the entry foyer through the kitchen to the living room beyond. “They’d wanted a cool architectural piece to lead into the main living space,” Chin says. “We explored several options, including a fabric, wood or textured stone wall; but when he saw the exotic white stone he loved it.” To contrast with the sleek, cool, quartzite wall, Chin suggested plastered, warm, gray walls, as well as rich Ipe wood flooring elsewhere. “When you enter, the foyer gives a feeling of anticipation, the glowing illuminated wall on one side and the textured painted wall lined with art on the other. As you step into the main living space, the ceiling pops up and the

space opens out.” Of course, there are also the views. With the Biscayne Bay to the south and downtown Miami to the west, the outside scenery dazzles as well. “For the palette, we wanted to go neutral, letting color come from the views and the art,” says Chin, settling on gray as her backdrop. “Gray is a tricky color, a chameleon taking on other colors, so it has to be the right one.” A custom-designed, ombré wool and silk carpet also acts as a runner in the main living space, specifically designating areas within the large living room. “The living room needed to feel cozy but also have enough seating for when the couple entertains guests,” says Chin of the room, which can comfortably seat five couples. The designer achieved this by creating two separate social groupings within the enlarged living room. One area is defined by a pair of leather armchairs with cross-stitch details, a cocktail ottoman and a hanging transparent bubble chair; the other is anchored by a linen-silk blend sectional and intriguing black rope chairs that center a Florian Roeper cocktail table. The owners’ vibrant collection of art colors the space, while the black, laser-cut silk-on-tulle window treatments flutter against the walls to soften the edges with a touch of whimsy.

Lifestyle had a big part to play in the decisions that were made in the remodel, including the choice to convert the once standard two-bedroom apartment into an unconventional one-bedroom home with a small library in lieu of a customary guestroom. The library also gave up some square footage to the principal living space. In the kitchen, a pair of stainless steel venting hoods set in glass and a series of glass pendant light fixtures drop down from the tray ceiling above a sculptural island. “Because they did not want a typical working kitchen, we focused the design on a giant island countertop for entertaining,” Dannwolf says. And when the homeowners are ready to retreat at day’s end, the calming hues of the master bedroom soothes the soul as sheer draperies pull open to reveal the beautiful cityscape beyond. “The husband plans on retiring soon,” Dannwolf says. “They hope to spend more and more time in Miami, now that they have a fun and very personal place to get away.”

Y

ou would think that a Miami native and fifth-generation local builder would know just about every nook and cranny in neighborhoods around his hometown, but it was actually builder

Sean Murphy’s wife Jennifer who discovered this private parcel of land in Coral Gables, Fla., where this couple would build their dream home. “The property she found was beautiful … very quiet, secluded and heavily wooded with 15 majestic specimen oak trees,” Murphy says. The Murphys had previously worked with architect and family friend, Bill Taylor, and asked him to work with them on their new home — one that would be perfect for indoor-outdoor living.

In the dining area, a 1960s stainless steel Italian Sputnik chandelier illuminates a J. Robert Scott glass table designed by Sally Sirkin Lewis. on the dining room wall, an abstract painting by Argentinian artist Perez Celis expresses a bold modern statement.

“Bill is a master architect and understands what it takes to put a house together,” the homeowner says. In addition to the inside-outside

concept,

the

also

required floor-to-ceiling glass throughout, a symmetrical design and a home that wouldn’t overwhelm the site. “We wanted something comfortable and modern, but not stark like a showroom,” Murphy says. With its handsome stucco and glass exterior, the two-story, 8,500-square-foot home is strikingly unadorned. Touches of cypress trim add horizontal dimension, and a Florida keystone wall that begins at the outside entry and continues throughout the house, furthers its relationship with nature. To create the interiors, the couple called on interior designer Jeffrey Lamb. We just loved how Jeffrey designed our last house,” the owner says. Lamb, who has a a special affinity for vintage style having previously been the owner of two vintage-modern shops, designed that home in Mid-Century Modern, which is exactly what he envisioned for the Murphy’s new residence.

Overhead, a bleached cypress soffit floats just below a 13-foot-high ceiling that intersects the bar’s keystone wall. The keystone wall at 20 feet high and 60 feet long is a feature that Lamb devised. He loved the way the flagstone is stacked at Frank Lloyd Wright’s historic “Fallingwater” residence. He took photos and made a sample using Wright’s design. “When I first saw it … I just knew that was it,” the designer says. The living room is filled with the Murphy’s eclectic collection of vintage pieces created in an earthy gray and cream color palette with broad strokes of deep colors for contrast. in gray velvet from Arravanti, and armchairs clad in a patterned silver-gray and chocolate-brown cut velvet, flank a pair of 1970s rectangular glass cocktail tables finished in a polished-nickel design by Milo Baughman. Honed chenille marble flooring grounds the space and adds a layer of subtlety. The gas fireplace, custom designed by Lamb, is “a big design element — and it’s opposite the stone wall, so it had to be as exciting,” the designer says. A massive black-marble surround houses the firebox where flames leap from a metal ribbon to convey a modern, dramatic feel. The master suite’s garden-like bath is wrapped in chenille marble and epitomizes the home’s inside-outside sensibility. The freeform tub rests inside an atrium next to a shower shielded within a garden wall. Landscaping designer Robert Parsley salvaged the home’s large oak trees and repositioned them. “They embrace the house and make everything appear as if it has been there forever,” Lamb says. “Bringing the outside into this home feels like you are living in a garden all the time,” he says.

SILVER FAST Quick as silver, fast as lightning, this staggering 252-foot superyacht leaves others in its wake. TEXT BY ROBIN HODES

When Silver Fast stretches across the water, nothing stands in its way. A force to be reckoned with, its lustrous aluminum physique achieves fantastic speeds. And with its cutting-edge design, the super yacht is truly a sight to behold.

T

he sleek and streamlined Silver Fast is one of the most eye-catching yachts on

the water. The fourth in the award-winning SILVERYACHTS series, she is both strikingly fast and fuel efficient, achieving top speeds close to 29 knots. With a touchand-go helipad, beach club with spa, and contemporary accommodations for up to 18 guests, this groundbreaking yacht is a precious commodity. Silver Fast is the

fastest aluminum yacht of its size utilizing conventional propulsion according to her builder, the Australian shipyard Silveryachts. Alas, the sleek, svelte, silver beauty is more than just fast. Its interior, from the minds of the German design firm Vain Interiors, is elegant and unique. The continued on 138

owner’s suite includes a private lounge and large deck. Many of the staterooms, including three VIP staterooms on the main deck, are lovingly appointed with anigre paneling and other refined wood detailing. Safe to say, this superyacht is a showstopper both inside and out. And speaking of shows, Silver Fast was the uncontested star of the Superyacht Miami Show. The official extension of Show Management’s Yachts Miami Beach, Superyacht Miami took place for the first time at Island Gardens Deep Harbour, North America’s only marina capable of accommodating up to 50 of the world’s largest yachts. At an astonishing 252 feet,

Silver Fast was the largest on display. Silver Fast’s asking price, through Burgess Yachts, is approximately $89 million USD. M

One of the exterior highlights is the sundeck,

which features an outdoor cinema and a glassfront, eight-person spa. The large beach club at the transom provides ample room for deck chairs and launching water toys.

This sizable super yacht cuts through the waves with remarkable speed and precision. With a gleaming metallic physique and slick contemporary interior design, Silver Fast is truly an ocean treasure.

iami-based interior designer Marina Frolova, owner of De’Marti Design, created this spectacular 3,880-square-foot L’Ambiance condominium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a young couple who

wanted a vacation home fashioned with elegant, one-of-a-kind custom furnishings strategically positioned to highlight the condo’s spectacular ocean views. The designer’s clients, an entrepreneur and his photographer/graphic artist fiancée, desired an open environment with contemporary furnishings filled with abstract artwork and sculpture that would showcase their individuality and creativity. “This dynamic

duo offered inspiration toward a contemporary environment designed to relax and entertain during their vacations in Florida,” Frolova says. Artwork in animal forms, a specific request from the clients, contribute to the creative ambiance throughout the home. In fact, one of their favorite pieces, a multi-hued zebra, is a one-of-a-kind sculpture that the couple fell in love with and just had to have on a recent trip to an art gallery on Las Olas Boulevard, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The designer made certain to take full advantage of the home’s stunning sea views that could also be captured from the penthouse’s two spacious balconies. De’Marti Design is a leading, full-service interior design group with more than 10 years of experience, and is considered one of Miami’s go-to firms. Catering to an upscale clientele, their associates have designed projects for a wide range of public figures that include Fortune 500 investors, real estate developers, international film stars, heads of foreign countries and sports personalities.
