The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes
THE APPLE CONSPIRACY THEORY. That moment your iPhone charge cord is about to totally die, and you try inserting it into your phone this way then that way You try scotch taping it, pleading with it, screaming to God.... it’s like losing a loved one. So as of late, my mobile Facebook keeps shutting down and my phone is starting to get slow, which is perfectly timed with the apparent revealing of the new iPhone this fall. I still swear Apple has a giant conspiracy and starts making the performance of their phones downgrade right around the time they’re going to introduce an upgraded phone! ACTING LIKE A MALL RAT. As I type this, I’m sitting in one of those mall massage chairs, eating chocolate frozen yogurt and playing on Facebook. It’s like a new level of orgasm. I’m strictly here to kill time, do a little walking, and laugh at ugly people. Oh, and get molested by the Israeli boys offering you Dead Sea face cream.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL. If you were a kid in the late 70s early 80s, this was officially your first exposure to gay porn! Thanks Olivia! LOL THE NEW WILTON MANORS DIET. This heat and humidity is unbearable. The silver lining is I have no appetite! Time to sweat out this past week’s vodka and frustrations! I HAVE ONE RULE ABOUT DATING. If we go back to his house and there’s a framed picture of Elvis Presley anywhere that’s visible, I run. HOW TO KEEP YOUR “SEXUAL FLUID” FROM SHOWING. Why do boys at the gym wear leggings under their shorts? Is this part of this whole “sexual fluidity” thing? IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? Whenever I’m in a public place, no matter if I am completely quiet, there has always seemed to be an invisible sign around my neck that must say “HEY--If you’re a complete deranged lunatic, come on over and please tell me your life story!” Every f*cking day without fail! THOUGHT FOR THE DAY! I’ve watched enough Dateline to know that if you check into a motel room or stay at someone’s house in the Midwest with bad wood 70s paneling and shag carpet, you’re definitely getting murdered. Words of caution people!! SHE MUST HAVE BEEN BLIND. Just got carded for buying wine at Target and was flattered for all of 3 seconds until the checkout girl told me that she needs to manually key in my birthday to continue checking out. She should’ve stabbed me in the eye with a rusty ice pick, it would’ve stung me less!

Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week
Alexander Skarsgard on Tarzan, acting and advice to straight men who are involved in gay sex scenes. “You just have to embrace it. I had two gay sex scenes on True Blood. ”If we commit to this, it’s going to be an amazing scene and we’re going to be very happy with it forever. If we hold back, that’s when it gets awkward.” David Denson, of the Milwaukee Brewers organization, set a milestone on Tuesday as the first-ever gay all-star in any major professional male team sport his response was, “It turned out to be nothing like I expected. I expected worse. I thought my teammates would be weirded out, be a little disgusted. I thought it would basically be me on my own. But all I’ve gotten from teammates was support. They’ve had my back through everything. They’ve said they respect me as a player and a person.”
Dwayne Wade feelings about his nude photo shoot, “Someone may look at me and think, “Why would you have insecurity?” Well, this is real life and I’m human, and these are the things that I deal with that many others might deal with.” Pope Francis said Sunday that Christians owe apologies to gays, “That they must not be discriminated against, that they must be respected and accompanied pastorally. The Church must ask forgiveness for not behaving many times -when I say the Church, I mean Christians! The Church is holy, we are sinners!”
Nico Tortorella, star of the TV Land series Younger, comes out and comments he’s never “been in any sort of closet,” in relation to revealing his sexual fluidity. “I think it’s one thing to hide and it’s one thing to come out of the closet in a public statement, but I’ve always done me and never been shy and have been vocal about it.”
a Chris Mosier is first transgender athlete to appear in ESPN’s special issue: “I have wanted to be in the Body Issue for over a year. I think the reason I felt so inspired to do it is that I’m finally at a place where I feel very comfortable with my body. And as a trans person, being in a body that didn’t really fit me for 29 years, now I feel very comfortable in my own skin.” June 30, 2016

WILTON MANORS
Local Wilton Manors Man Arrested on Child Porn Charges
WILTON MANORS—A 27-year-old Wilton Manors man was arrested on June 22 after Fort Lauderdale police found 20 images of child pornography on his laptop computer. Sean Grealy was arrested on 10 counts of possession of child pornography, as well as one count each for distribution or transmission of child pornography, compiling or collecting computer child pornography, and promoting the sexual performance of a child. The local police had been brought into the investigation after being alerted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who had gathered undercover intelligence that someone was using internet connections in Fort Lauderdale to transmit child porn. Search warrants were issued for both Grealy’s cellphone and email accounts. Upon searching his files, more than 20 images of child pornography were found including a three-year-old child involved in sexual acts with men. According to his Facebook account, Grealy worked at Java Boys coffee house in Wilton Manors as well as a barista at Barnes and Noble in Fort Lauderdale. Police said additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of forensic examinations of Grealy’s phone and computer. nn 6

Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale Canals Reopened FORT LAUDERDALE--Just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, Fort Lauderdale city officials have given the green light for the use of inland waterways that had been off-limits since last week when a precautionary water advisory was issued. The advisory was the result of a pair of sewer leaks, one of which was off of Sunrise Blvd at George English Park and Bayview Drive. It was there last Thursday that a 42-inch sewer pipe broke and raw sewerage ran into the street as well as into George English Lake. In another break, this one underground, a sewer pipe broke at the corner of SE 10th St and SE 2nd St near downtown. A precautionary water advisory to avoid water-related recreational activities in inland waterways in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors and Oakland Park had been in place since last Sunday. All advisories have now been lifted with the exception of those involving George English Lake and the Himmarshee Canal in Fort Lauderdale. Drinking water was never impacted by the sewer spill. George English Lake is located at 1101 Bayview Drive and remains closed, as does Himmarshee Canal from the New River to U.S. 1. The city has reopened several boat launches, at Cox’s Landing and the 15th Street Boat Ramp, Cooley’s Landing at 450 SW Seventh Ave. and Riverland Woods Park at 3950 Riverland Road. nn
Trantalis Wants Ban on Assault Weapons FORT LAUDERDALE—The city’s vice mayor, Dean Trantalis, has gone on record to eliminate the sale of semi-automatic weapons from local gun shows, according to an interview he gave CBS4’s general assignment report Carey Codd. “We feel that weapons such as this, assault weaponry, is inappropriate and it’s my goal to eliminate that from our gun shows,” Trantalis said adding that the city needs to do this to keep its residents safe. “If we don’t take these steps, we are not protecting the people of our community.” Trantalis was reacting to the recent massacre of 49 people at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando by a gunman using an assault weapon among his arsenal. A gun show is ongoing at the War Memorial Auditorium this weekend. According to CBS. On Friday, ads featuring assault weapons were visible. Trantalis says he wants to add a provision to the gun show’s next lease agreement with the city to ban assault weapons. Yet, according to a vender, Scott Mongeon, fully automatic weapons are not for sale at the show. “They sell semi-automatic weapons,” he said. Mongeon wants to make certain that people understand that a weapon like this AR-15 cannot spray bullets and that he and others use it like a rifle for hunting and target shooting. “Every time you squeeze the trigger, a bullet comes out,” he explained to Codd, as if that made their sale acceptable. Mongeon believes the last thing politicians should do in the wake of Orlando is restrict people’s right to buy firearms. He says a change to the lease agreement would impact their business. “It’s gonna hurt a lot of vendors. It’s gonna hurt a lot of the families that depend on that,” he said. But Trantalis sees this as an issue of safety. “We’re not trying to take guns from people. We’re just trying to take a weapon of mass destruction out of the economy,” he said. nn
NATIONAL Transgender man attacked after Seattle event for Orlando
SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle police are working with the FBI to investigate an attack on a transgender man who was beaten after leaving a fundraiser for victims of the Orlando mass shooting. The Wednesday night attack happened in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood just before midnight. According to the police department’s online blotter, the attacker said, “Hey, Happy Pride” before punching the man in the face. The victim was left unconscious after being grabbed by the throat and assaulted further. nn
Ivory Coast: Gay men attacked over event for Orlando victims
ABIDJAN, IC (AP) - Gay men in Ivory Coast say they’ve been assaulted and forced to flee their homes after the U.S. Embassy published a photo of them signing a condolence book for victims of this month’s killings at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The photo, published on the embassy’s website and shared on social media, shows six men with the caption “LGBTI community signing the condolence book.” nn
Stonewall Inn Now a National Monument
NEW YORK--President Barack Obama announced that the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan has been named a national monument dedicated to the gay-rights movement. The bar in Greenwich Village, frequented by members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, became the site of an uprising after police raided it in June 1969, triggering what’s widely viewed as the start of the gay rights movement. The monument will cover 7.7 acres in Manhattan, including the bar, a small park across the street called Christopher Park, and the streets around it where the uprising took place. nn
Deadly Meningitis Outbreak in Los Angeles
Pulse Nightclub Owners Leads NYC Pride Parade; Hillary Clinton in Surprise Appearance
NEW YORK--”I want you to know that Orlando and the world’s gay community are strong and united,” Barbara Poma said. “We will not allow evil to prevail.” The owner of the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, where 49 members of the LGBT community were massacred two weeks previously, sat atop the lead float in the Pride Parade that made its way through the streets of Manhattan with crowds estimated at 2 million. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made history when she marched for four blocks in the parade, stepping out of a black SUV in Greenwich Village, to join stunned marchers at the Pride event. Surrounded by her own security detail, Clinton was joined in the parade by a horde of dignitaries eager to share in her spotlight. Among them were Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who momentarily put aside their on-going feud. No one was more spotlight hogging however than the Rev. Al Sharpton, who never left Clinton’s side no matter how hard other tried to nudge him away. nn
INTERNATIONAL Australians to vote on gay marriage this weekend
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Australia’s opposition leader on Wednesday announced that he now favors gay marriage, a key issue in this weekend’s elections. The center-left Labor Party gas agreed to endorse a plebiscite this year to allow the public a direct say on whether Australia should give legal recognition to same-sex marriage. “I think the people of Australia, the majority of them, have clearly moved - even in the last two or three years - to supporting marriage equality and all popular opinion polls would seem to indicate the truth of what I’m saying,” said opposition leader Bill Shorten. Both Shorten and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull support same sex marriage, but differ on how it should be achieved. nn
LOS ANGELES--Three years after a deadly strain of bacterial meningitis killed two Los Angeles gay men and a San Diego student, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials issued a Department of Public Health (DPH) ‘Health Alert’ warning that a new outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease is once again hitting gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM) particularly hard. According to the Associated Press, “… nine meningococcal disease cases have been identified in men living in Los Angeles and Orange counties. One patient died as a result of the infection. Six of the cases are known to have been caused by a particular strain of meningococcal bacteria.” Four of these nine meningitis cases were found in MSM, and according to the L.A. County Health alert, three of the four MSM cases occurred within the past 6 weeks. nn
EEOC: Landmark sex discrimination lawsuit settled
BALTIMORE (AP) - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says a landmark lawsuit alleging sex discrimination based on sexual orientation has been settled for more than $200,000. The EEOC said in a statement Tuesday that Pallet Companies, doing business as IFCO Systems, will pay just over $182,000 to a woman who said she was fired after complaining that her supervisor made comments regarding her sexual orientation and appearance. The EEOC says the company will also donate $20,000 to a foundation set up by the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT advocacy group. The EEOC says IFCO Systems has agreed to hire someone to develop a training program on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workplace issues. nn

PINK PISTOLS: Gays arm themselves in response to attacks BY RICHARD HACK
I
f there is one unifying message that has emerged after the horror of the June 12th massacre at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando is that this was a specifically targeted attack on the LGBT community. Despite all the diversionary tactics suggesting that terrorism was behind the assault, the gays and lesbian around the globe aren’t buying the rhetoric or the reaction of the Republican-led response to it. In the absence of any legislation to govern the sale of assault weapons, gays are taking the initiative and arming themselves against future attacks. Defend yourself if you want to save yourself is the new LGBT mantra. Pink Pistols, a gay gun club based in Atlanta with chapters throughout the country (including Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida), has seen a spike in membership, and requests to form local chapters have also 8

increased, including the brand new Pink Pistols of Central Florida, a division of Empower Firearms Training. Nicki Stallard, a transgender spokesperson for the group, wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times that said in part, “Since the attack in Orlando, FL, many LGBT groups have been calling loudly for laws restricting gun ownership. But if anyone should be concerned about protecting the individual right to bear arms, it’s LGBT people. We need to stop preaching nonviolence and voting for politicians who don’t protect us.” There are more than a few who have joined the Pink Pistol bandwagon, intent on not only arming the entire LGBT population, but then spreading the word. According to the Pink Pistol manual, “We teach queers to shoot, then teach the world that we have done it.”
The idea here is hardly a new one. It is meant to be the loudest deterrent with the smallest amount of physical contact. And that physical contact, at least for the LGBT community, is what is on the uprise. LGBTs, more than black, Jews, latinos or Asians, are the targets of the highest number of hate crimes. It is ironic that much of the increase in attacks of gays and transgenders has come because of our successful legislation for equality. We now hold hands in public; even kiss occasionally. And with each flagrant demonstration of love toward another, we become the potential target of bigots who become more radicalized as our freedoms have increased. “They may feel that the way they see the world is threatened, which motivates them to strike out in some way, and for some people, that way could be
in violent attacks,” Gregory M. Herek, a psychology professor at the University of California, Davis, told the New York Times. Unfortunately, as bad as the increase in hate crimes appears, the reality is even worse since getting true statistics into hate crimes is nearly impossible. For a variety of reasons, including exposure to family and friends, the gay victims of hate crimes do not make a police or FBI report. According to the Associated Press, more than 2,700 city police and county sheriff’s departments across the country have not submitted a single hate crime report for the FBI’s annual crime tally during the past six years — about 17 percent of all city and county law enforcement agencies nationwide. Given that the attacks are real, and underreported, the desire to seek protection is under-

standable. Journalist Jonathan Raunch, writing on Salon.com years ago said, “If it became widely known that homosexuals carry guns and know how to use them, not many bullets would need to be fired. In fact, not all that many gay people would need to carry guns, as long as gay-bashers couldn’t tell which ones did. Suddenly, what is now an almost risk-free sport for testosterone-drenched teenagers would become a great deal less attractive.” “I think right now because of what happened, people are looking for answers,” said Mike Smith, a gun instructor in Colorado Springs. “You walk into a gun shop and you expect to see people, frankly, who look like me. I think we forget we’re a country of all people, not just people who fit that predetermined mold.” Smith says that he feels compelled to start his own
chapter of the Pink Pistols in his area, despite the fact that he is heterosexual, in order to help the LGBT community.

JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT WE WERE RID OF THE BIGOT: MARCO RUBIO RUNS FOR RE-ELECTION
n
Last week would have been hysterically funny, if it wasn’t such a sad statement of “politics as usual” in Florida. Marco Rubio announced he was running again for the U.S. Senate, representing the Sunshine State. That, unfortunately, is both the joke and the punchline. Rudio spent the last year, during his unsuccessful bid for the Republican Presidential nomination, telling everyone and anyone who would listen that he would not run for BY reelection to the Senate. RICHARD He said it HACK so often in fact that we suspected that he was threatening that if we didn’t vote for this irritant of a politician that we would be the ones responsible for losing him as a public servant. Well, no such luck. In one of the most amazing flip flops in American political theater, Rubio announced last Wednesday that he was in back in the Senate race hoping to keep the seat that he’s held since 2011. That in itself is bad enough news, without hearing the reason he says he feels compelled to run. Rubio said that he was “deeply impacted” by the Orlando massacre at Pulse Nightclub on June 12th in which 49 members of the LGBT community were 10
June 30, 2016
murdered. Though some of the victims were not gay, they were certainly LGBT allies, and made little distinction between sexual identities. Rubio announced that he was even more impacted than he might otherwise might have been, because he “knew the community well.” Really? Marco Rubio can claim many things, but knowing the Latino LGBT community is not one of them. He knows nothing about that community or any other group encompassed within the LGBT base. Worse still, he does not care to know. To attempt to use the tragedy in Orlando as the reason behind his move to re-enter the race for the U.S. Senate is as absurd as it is damaging. Senator Mark Rubio has consistently voted against every LGBT legislation that has been offered to promote equality and human rights. During his recent run for the Republican presidential nomination, Rubio promised to try to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision that allowed same-sex marriage to be legal in all 50 states. Much like Donald Trump, if elected president, Rubio promised to try to turn back the clock by appointing ultra-conservative justices. Rubio opposes transgender people’s use of restroom facilities that correspond to their gender identity. If he returns to the Florida Senate, we can expect him to continue that fight, despite the legal absurdity of the challenge. If elected president, he prom-
ised to remove all of President Barack Obama’s executive orders that currently protect Federal workers who identify as LGBT. Additionally, Rudio voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which has failed to pass in every Congress since 1994. And let’s not get started on the issue of Mike Pence. The bigoted governor of North Carolina’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) is specifically targeted at permitting private business to deny services to the LGBT community. It has cost NC hundreds of millions in contracts and convention business. Yet, Marco Rubio has given Pence his support—even after Pence endorsed Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. All of which brings us back to the massacre in Orlando. It is beyond a cheap trick for the Florida Senator who himself hates gays, and is against giving the LGBT community even the most simple of rights, to say the Pulse Nightclub attack was “the new face of
the war on terror.” While you may not carry an AK-15 assault rifle, Senator, you are equally as hateful as the murderer who pulled the trigger in Orlando. You don’t kill us with bullets, of course. You just delight in removing health care benefits, retirement benefits, marriage benefits, job benefits, housing benefits, and any other form of assistance from gays and lesbians, transgenders and bisexuals, that the heterosexual community has come to expect as their human right. Welcome back to the race for a Senate seat that you have admitted to hating, Marco. Your scam to position yourself for yet another Presidential run in 2020 is fooling no one; least of all the LGBT community. Richard Hack is the awardwinning author of 26 books, and the Vice President of Content for Multimedia Platforms’ publications.
“
He knows nothing about that community or any other group encompassed within the LGBT base. Worse still, he does not care to know.”

They’re the 49 innocent human beings whose lives were taken, and an additional 53 human beings were injured at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. Where many knew one or more of the 49 in one way or another, many of us did not. However, that hasn’t stopped so many from reaching out; financially, emotionally - any way we can to show we care. Hash tags such as #onepulse #orlandostrong #prayforpulse
#prayfororlando were created. We’ve held (and still have) services, vigils, rallies, wore/ wear various ribbons, even changed our online photos to show each of them we care. The reality check: One of the 49 or 53 could have been one of us. Once again and no surprise, people of all backgrounds unite in the face of tragedy. At the time I sent this article to print, a main Go Fund Me account had raised $6,213,685 of a $7,000,000 goal by 115,306 people in 13 days. Here in Ft. Lauderdale, attorney Tom Runyan initiated a Facebook page “Love Always Wins”, and has spearheaded peaceful gatherings at the corner of Federal Highway at Oakland Park Boulevard. The turnout of participants has been remarkable, as has been the community support. It is amazing to stand out there, signs in hand, and hear the horns honk, see & hear the cameras click along with the waves, smiles and shouts of praise. Not just from passers-by in cars or on foot who are LGBTQI persons, but ALL persons! It’s truly inspirational. The gatherings will continue over the next few weeks. Check out the Facebook page for more details. As always with the good, comes the not so good. Pastors Kenneth Adkins in Brunswick, Georgia, Pastor Steven Anderson in Phoenix, Arizona and Pastor Roger Jimenez in Sacramento, California, all received media attention by their hate speeches (putting it mildly) praising the killings. Karma worked quickly for Jimenez as his landlord refused to renew his lease. Of course, let us not leave out those campaigning. It has been reported by patheos. com, that on June 21, 2016, presidential Candidate Donald Trump was meeting with some of the most (in my honest opinion) hateful, vile troublemakers around. “The meeting will bring together people like Tony Perkins, James Dobson, E.W. Jackson, Pat Robertson, and a host of other Christians known to readers of this site for their anti-LGBT, antiwomen, anti-everything-that-is-good-anddecent rhetoric.” Additionally, Donald said he would seek to overturn the same gender
marriage ruling. Yes, just a few days ago on June 13th, 2016, cnn.com’s headline was “ Donald Trump to LGBT community: I’m a ‘real friend’ “ Really, Donald? With friends like you........ Is there any lesson? I believe so. As we approach the 240th anniversary of America on July 4th, we must remember important words in the Declaration of Independence: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It doesn’t say for one. It is for ALL. Each of us is responsible to make sure this happens. The life of a LGBTQI person is not usually an easy one. WE MUST all take responsibility for our tomorrow.
WE MUST not forget it is and will continue being a lifelong (at least in my lifetime) battle. WE MUST all fight the fight. No one or two groups or people can do it alone. WE MUST not take anything for granted. It’s time for everyone to be involved. WE MUST honor those whose lives were taken to get us where we are today. WE MUST! Many of us are doing our part. What is yours? I leave you with the words of Anil Sinha: “Make your past a learning lesson, make your present purposeful, and prevent your future becoming a constant battle.” Wishing everyone a safe and Happy 4th of July! nn

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
American Veterans for Equal Rights Recognized at Fort Benning Pride
n
Dear Editor, and fellow LGBT warriors:
Yesterday I had the honor of attending the very first LGBT Pride celebration at Fort Benning, GA, home of Army Infantry, Queen of Battle. Brigadier General Tammy Smith, the first openly LGBT general officer in the United States military, shared a profound personal story about her own career in the Army under policies that kept her from being the “authentic leader” that she wanted to be. She told about how she met her wife, Tracey Hepner, and how she decided that she could no longer hide such an important part of her life from the Army. As a colonel, she had submitted her retirement papers until she heard Admiral Mike Mullen’s famous testimony before members of Congress in which the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs gave a heartfelt recommendation for the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Tammy Smith remained in the military, was promoted to general officer, and was able to introduce “her wife” Tracey to her comrades in the Army after repeal. Yesterday BG Tammy Smith called me up on the stage at Fort Benning for a special presentation. She personally thanked AVER for all our efforts, and she presented me with a beautiful rainbow challenge coin in recognition of our efforts to allow her to become the authentic leader she had always wanted to be, the type of leader that the US military values as the very core of the armed services. I was deeply honored to accept this special award on your behalf. 12
June 30, 2016
It has been a difficult Pride Month with the attack in Orlando that was quite simply a hate crime against all of us who live and love in the LGBT community. In the midst of a divisive political season, the arguments very quickly devolved into concerns about terrorism and assault weapons. We know better. We have had to fight for our existence before. And we have prevailed. This month, AVER color guards led parades from New York City to Columbus to Denver. LGBT veterans joined us in record numbers. We are the voice and the proud face of LGBT veterans across the country, and from people like General Tammy Smith our leadership and our work has been recognized and honored. It is quite possible that on Friday of this week the US military will honor its promise to open service to Transgender patriots who volunteer to defend our nation’s freedom. That will be one more major victory for AVER and all Americans who have worked for so long to bring about LGBT service. It will be a day to celebrate, and to consider our future mission. Last week, I attended a Pride event at the Atlanta VA Hospital here in my hometown of Decatur, GA. At that event, I made some great contacts and we talked about programs targeted specifically to LGBT veterans. We shared ideas. They listened. We made plans to meet again. You as dedicated members of AVER have been recognized for your efforts in bringing about the changes we see in the US military. Our efforts as both the nation’s LGBT
Veterans Service Organization and the oldest LGBT group to challenge and defeat the 100-year-old policy against our service must continue. We must be vigilant, thoughtful, and compassionate caretakers of what we have achieved and what we have yet to imagine as LGBT people become integral and valued members of the US military and honored recipients of the VA benefits and care that we have earned. Our mission must continue. It is a vital and honorable duty. BG Tammy Smith is moving on to a command in Korea. In saying goodbye she and Tracey thanked me for AVER’s efforts on their behalf. “You are my victory,” I said to them. General Smith turned with a smile and replied “Thank you for winning.” That is a message that I send along to you all tonight as members of American Veterans for Equal Rights. Thank you for fighting. Thank you for winning. You are the best. Happy Pride Danny Ingram, National President Emeritus on behalf of President Steve Loomis and your national board Editor’s Note: American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER) is the oldest and largest chapterbased, all-volunteer national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Veterans Service Organization in the United States, and the nation’s only LGBT VSO recognized by the Veterans Administration. The organization just celebrated it 26th anniversary. nn

“A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. Hating gay is a lifestyle choice.” - John Fugelsang “When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free.” - U.S. President Barack Obama “It always seemed to me a bit pointless to disapprove of homosexuality. It’s like disapproving of rain.” - Francis Maude “I am a strong, black lesbian woman. Every single time I say it, I feel so much better.” - Basketball player Brittney Griner “I’ve been embraced by a new community. That’s what happens when youre finally honest about who you are; you find others like you.” - Chaz Bono “I think being gay is a blessing, and it’s something I am thankful for every single day.” - Anderson Cooper “At some point in our lifetime, gay marriage won’t be an issue, and everyone who stood against this civil right will look as outdated as George Wallace standing on the school steps keeping James Hood from entering the University of Alabama because he was black.” - George Clooney “There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.” - Paul Newman “The pressures on gay teens can be overwhelming--to keep secrets, tell lies, deny who you are, and try to be who you’re not. Remember: you are special and worth being cared about, loved, and accepted just as you are. Never, ever let anyone convince you otherwise.” - Alex Sanchez nn

CAPITOL BEAT
Britain reveals its ugly underbelly, but at what price?
n
An elderly London neighbor of my sister’s was celebrating this weekend. “My father fought two wars to get rid of the Germans and now we have finally done it!” he proclaimed. Like many similar such pronouncements — against Poles, Muslims, immigrants in general, government, you name it — his entrenched opinion was wrenching to those who voted on June 23 for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union. Old grudges die hard, but even if they do, new ones rise up to fill their place. Make no mistake about it; just as the Orlando massacre was indeed an attack on the LBGT community, despite right wing claims it was all about terrorism, so Brexit was an attack upon immigrants, not an effort to repaint Britain BY in the comfortLINDA able image of PENTZ Masterpiece Theatre. The coming months of economic chaos and divisive civil stress may lead some who harbored the illusion of an “independent” Britain to delusion. But for the millions who voted for Britain to remain in the EU, the morning after the vote brought immediate disbelief and despair. Including to my sister. She just happens to run one of the world’s leading research labs on Hepatitis B. She relies on hiring the best and the brightest — including from other European countries —to get to the bottom of this viral
14
June 30, 2016
infection that kills at least 780,000 people a year. But Brexit, her European colleagues told her, has likely “doomed the future of British science and academia in general.” Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease as well as death. Gay men are at particular risk. Yet Hep B is the forgotten stepchild to HIV, where funding and research has been the focus. “Many men have not been vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B, even though a safe and effective vaccine is available,” notes the Centers for Disease Control. Despite the availability of this vaccine since 1982, education about Hep B prevention remains under-emphasized in the gay community. International collaboration is an essential component of scientific and medical research. In the UK, a borderless EU has greatly facilitated these partnerships and accelerated progress. But now all this could be stalled. “I will have to completely re-think how to staff and fund my lab without the European input in the future,” said my sister. The common adjective she shared and which was felt by many who voted for the UK to remain in the EU was “gutted.” Which is precisely what Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative government did to essential social services across Britain. So that even though the deprivations of British working people could be directly attributed to the real culprit, government cuts, the die had been cast for a Brexit campaign rooted in xenophobia and racism that pointed the finger at an obvious if erroneous scapegoat: immigrants.
An ugly underbelly had been laid bare, but it had been there all along. To those confronting the frightening specter of a Trump presidency in the U.S., all this might sound familiar. It should certainly serve as a warning. None of this was lost on the revelers at the London Pride Parade that fell two days after the EU referendum. Even though on that day, “out” was something to celebrate, many recognized that the decision to leave the EU undermined an essential tenet of the LGBT rights movement: acceptance. Beyond the economic damage, the loss to science, medicine and dozens of other fields; beyond the freedom to live, travel, work and love in other countries, the Brexit vote hit at something deeper and sadder. “Worst of all is the realization that we are living in a country where we feel so at odds with a large section of the population,” wrote my sister in an email. “Now we are stuck alone on an island with a bunch of xenophobic bigots,” wrote another similarly “gutted” British friend on Facebook. That could be the U.S. come November. It’s up to all of us who value tolerance and acceptance, and who embrace “love wins,” to make sure that a similar culture of hate and division does not win the day here as well.nn

FYI
I’M JUST SAYIN’ What Is The EU? The European Union (EU) is a politico- economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It has an estimated population of over 508 million. The EU has developed an internal single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital within the internal market, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development. A monetary union was established in 1999 and came into full force in 2002, and is composed of 19 EU member states which use the euro currency. The EU operates through a hybrid system of supranational and intergovernmental decisionmaking. The seven principal decision-making bodies—known as the institutions of the European Union—are the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the European Court of Auditors. Covering 7.3% of the world population, the EU in 2014 generated a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of 18.495 trillion US dollars, constituting approximately 24% of global GDP and 17% when measured in terms of purchasing power. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Through the Common Foreign and Security Policy, the EU has developed a role in external relations and defence. The union maintains permanent diplomatic missions throughout the world and represents itself at the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the G8, and the G-20. Because of its global influence, the European Union has been described as a potential superpower. nn--Kevin Broady

CREEP OF THE WEEK
Donald Trump BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI
n
So much anti-LGBT dumb f*ckery has emerged after the shooting of 102 people, of which 49 were killed, by a man with a military-style assault weapon at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando. There has also been much love and support for LGBT people and rainbow flags a’flyin’ literally and figuratively. And that’s nice. But, man, the anti-gay stuff is just especially exhausting to read through and think about right now. But I do it for you, dear reader. And while there were a lot of potential Creeps, many of them were pretty small fish all things considered. So I chose a big fish, albeit one with very tiny hands. As has been established, one of the first things Donald Trump did after the shootings was to hop on Twitter and basically congratulate himself “for being right on radical Islamic terrorism.” Granted he followed that with “I don’t want congrats,” but I doubt that. As one of the most narcissistic people ever to run for president, I’ll bet he gets a boner every time he’s praised. On June 12, the Tweet that came before read, “Horrific incident in FL. Praying for all the victims & their families.” Which is an appropriate thing
16
June 30, 2016
to say. But it doesn’t really mean sh*t because from that moment on Trump has been using the Orlando shooting for political gain, namely by crafting the narrative that President Obama and soon-to-bePresident Hillary Clinton are somehow softies for terrorists and that since terrorist groups like ISIS hate LGBT people, Obama and Clinton basically hate LGBT people, too. “Hillary Clinton can never claim to be a friend of the gay community as long as she supports immigration policies that bring Islamic extremists to our country and who suppress women, gays, and anyone else who doesn’t share their views or values,” Trump said in a June 13 speech. In other words, since Trump (who doesn’t even support marriage equality) hates Muslims, he’s a far better choice for gays. “Ask yourself who is really the friend of women and the LGBT community. Donald Trump with actions, or Hillary Clinton with her words?” Trump continued. I don’t know what actions Trump is talking about since he has no “actions” to show for his supposed support of LGBT people. He has not done a single thing but run his mouth about how much he
hates brown people. It looks like Trump is engaging in some magical thinking here. Apparently he believes that everything he says comes true. I for one am very relieved that is not the case. On June 14 Trump tweeted, “Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.” Not sure what he’s thanking LGBT people for, but support certainly isn’t it. LGBT voters support Clinton by a mile. Some individual LGBT people have expressed their support for Trump following the Orlando shooting. Fear makes people to do stupid things. And Trump is happy to capitalize on fear. In fact, his campaign wouldn’t exist without it. On June 17 he promised via Twitter, “More attacks will follow Orlando.” Perhaps Trump has dreams where he stops the next attack, flying through the air and stopping bullets with his bare tiny hands, but as far as actual policies go, all Trump has is anti-Muslim rhetoric that inflames hate and inspires bigotry. You can’t fight hate with hate, and yet that’s all Trump has to offer. And LGBT people have had more than enough hatred, thank you. nn

OPINION
WHO IS?
Ahead in the polls B
attleground states are called battlegrounds for a reason: They’re often close, and 2016 looks like no exception. Hillary Clinton holds narrow leads over Donald Trump across a number of key states. In Florida (up three points, 44 to 41 percent); Colorado (Clinton 40 percent, Trump 39 percent); Wisconsin (Clinton up 41 percent to 36 percent) and North Carolina, which has flipped back and forth between the parties in the last two elections, it’s Clinton 44 percent and Trump 42 percent. Partisanship is driving much of these races too. Despite the hardfought primary contests on both sides, Democrats in these states are now lining up behind Hillary Clinton and Republicans behind Trump. Much of the vote appears locked in already: the bulk of those not voting for Clinton say they will not consider her, and the bulk of those not voting for Trump say they will not consider him. In Florida, a sizable numbers of voters are voting in opposition to a candidate they don’t like: Forty-eight percent of Trump’s voters are backing him mainly to oppose Hillary Clinton, and 32 percent of Clinton’s voters are with Clinton in order to oppose Trump. In Florida, 63 percent feel Hillary Clinton’s response to the Orlando tragedy showed compassion for the victims, while 46 percent feel Trump’s response did. Across these states, Clinton is much more widely described as being prepared to be commanderin-chief. Meanwhile Trump is more widely seen as able to bring change to Washington. nn CBS News Source

T
he Fourth of July means backyard barbecues get uncovered with visions of fantastic steaks, burgers and dogs getting that grilled-seared looked and charcoal flavor.
Unfortunately, when you combine fire and gays, there is the distinct chance that you’ll get a flare or two, of one kind or another. Each year, over 7,000 injuries from barbecuing are reported, mostly the result of great equipment used incorrectly. With that in mind, the Agenda has gotten together with the help of the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association.
BEFORE YOU
GRILL:
GRILLS ARE FOR OUTSIDE ONLY.
Barbecue grills are designed for outdoor use only. Never barbecue in your trailer, tent, house, garage, or any enclosed area because carbon monoxide may accumulate and kill you.
USE IN WELL-VENTILATED AREA.
Set up your grill in an open area that is away from buildings, overhead combustible surfaces, dry leaves, or brush. Be sure to avoid high traffic areas and always barbecue in a well-ventilated area. Be aware of windblown sparks and ball gowns (the latter mentioned because your dear friend and ours, Elaine Lancaster, insists cooking in gowns adds substantially to the flavor).
BY RICHARD HACK
To put out flare-ups, either raise the grid that the food is on, spread the coals out evenly, or adjust the controls to lower the temperature. If you must douse the flames with a light spritz of water, first remove the food from the grill. No one likes soggy meat.
T
SOME SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR BACKYARD BARBECUE
KEEP GRILL STABLE.
When using a barbecue grill, be sure that all parts of the unit are firmly in place and that the grill is stable (can’t be tipped over).
FOLLOW ELECTRIC CODES.
If electrically-operated accessories are used (rotisseries, etc.), be sure they are properly grounded in accordance with local codes. Electrical cords should be placed away from walkways or anywhere people can trip over them. Outdoor shocks happen easily and are even easier to avoid by using grounded cables.
USE LONG-HANDLED UTENSILS.
Use barbecue utensils with long handles (forks, tongs, etc.) to avoid burns and splatters. Long utensils also keep fake fingernails from getting too close to the fire and melting, You get the picture and it’s not particularly pretty.
WEAR SAFE CLOTHING.
Wear clothing that does not have hanging shirt tails, frills, or apron strings that can catch fire, and use flame-retardant mitts when adjusting hot vents. (See Elaine Lancaster in paragraph two.)
KEEP FIRE UNDER CONTROL.
BE READY TO EXTINGUISH FLAMES.
Use baking soda to control a grease fire and have a fire extinguisher handy. A bucket of sand or a garden hose should be near if you don’t have a commercial extinguisher. Screaming at the top of your lungs is not encouraged, but occasionally helpful to summon backup.

NEVER LEAVE A GRILL UNATTENDED ONCE LIT. Duh….and duh.
STAY AWAY FROM HOT GRILL.
Don’t allow anyone to conduct activity near the grill when in use or immediately following its use. The grill body remains hot up to an hour after being used.
DON’T MOVE A HOT GRILL.
Never attempt to move a hot grill. It’s easy to stumble or fall off your platforms, and the resulting burns are definitely not among your holiday accessories.
AN EXTRA WARNING FOR THOSE WITH PROPANE TANKS. The National Fire Protection Association reports that flammable gas or liquid is the first item ignited in half of outdoor grill fires at home. Whether you have a portable propane tank or a natural gas line, check the connections for leaks before using your gas grill. Put soapy water on all joints and connections. If tiny bubbles form, a leak needs to be fixed before you light it. While it may be as simple as tightening the joint, just be sure not to over tighten!
CHECK FOR RUSTED BURNERS.
You’ll probably have to buy BBQ burner replacements frequently but you can find them in many hardware stores or buy them from your barbecue’s manufacturer.
CLEAN VENTURI TUBES REGULARLY.
These are the tubes that extend from the burner to the control valves. Spiders and small insects like to build nests in there, causing blockages making grills difficult to ignite. It can interfere with gas flow making the flame uneven and dangerous.
ALWAYS LIGHT YOUR GAS BARBECUE WITH THE LID OPEN.
If it doesn’t start, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes for the gas to disperse before attempting again.
LIQUID PROPANE GAS IS PRESSURIZED AND REQUIRES SPECIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE.
Make sure that the cylinder is not overfilled.
WHEN THE LIQUID PROPANE CYLINDER IS CONNECTED, the grill must be kept outside in a well-
vented space because carbon monoxide can cause serious injury or death.
CONSIDER USING CERAMIC BRIQUETTES
instead of lava rocks that can catch fire.
WHEN FINISHED, turn off the burners and the propane cylinder and check for grease build-up while cleaning. nn
BBQ
SAUCES
These naturally heat resistant pads are usually made of lightweight composite cement or plastic and will protect your deck or patio from any grease that misses the drip pan. Clean-up is a bitch when we’re talking concrete.
TOP 5
CONSIDER PLACING A GRILL PAD OR SPLATTER MAT BENEATH YOUR GRILL.
SWEET BABY RAY’S: WALGREEN’S This is one delicious barbeque sauce! Fortunately, it can be found in most stores. Thick and smoky, it’s a sweet exciting combo. It works on chicken and burgers with abandon, waiting for you to fire up the grill. Rock-a-bye Sweet Baby Ray’s. BONE SUCKING SAUCE: ABC FINE WINES AND SPIRITS Yes, it is suckin not sucking. Bone Suckin Sauce is the choice for ribs. The presentation is simple and the jar method is a clue to “use the whole thing.” Grab a pork butt, find your crock pot and pour in 2 jars of Bone Suckin Sauce, then cook on high for 4 hours. BBQ JACKS: 500 E OAKLAND PARK BLVD, OAKLAND PARK Our local favorite on Oakland Park Boulevard, Bar-B-Q Jack’s, can be smelled for miles away. When you pull up to the carry out window, be sure to ask for an addition to your order. Bar-B-Q Jack’s now sells their own sauce. Homemade recipes are prepared on the premises from scratch. You can ditch the entire grilling project and call them up to cater the whole meal! (I won’t tell). BLUE FRONT BBQ HOT SAUCE: mybluefront.com Made right here in Lake Worth. Florida, Blue Front Bar-B-Q Sauce is available in mild, hot and wing sauce. It is considered a Florida icon and makes chicken sing on the grill. You’ll get that crispy texture that will make you want to eat the skin, but the unique sweet flavor will get you ordering a gallon at a time. JACK DANIEL’S ORIGINAL #7: PUBLIX A sweet and spicy sauce with tomato flavor that is slow cooked to perfection. The end result is less liquor than beef. One aficionado of this blend imagined that it was “Christmas eve with the fireplace burning in a cold house.

L
ooking more like a giant iPad or 60-inch computer monitor, the home base television is more than just the screen for cable. It is now your streaming platform for media brands. Connected to your home Wi-Fi, the smart TV can be your source for streaming music, watching YouTube videos, connecting on Facebook, shopping and surfing the Internet. The reliability of the connection and the ease of use are some of the challenges,
but the technology is constantly improving. The basics are that the smart TV’s hub or streaming dashboard is like having a Roku or Chromecast installed. Upon selection of the app menu, you can connect to your subscribed channels. Some of these are free while others require a monthly subscription. The biggest challenge is using search. The search interface for Smart TVs are tough to manipulate with most television remotes. June 30, 2016

YOUR LIFE: AN OWNER’S MANUAL
Forgiving Yourself n
When we were growing up we were taught to forgive others. We were told it’s the right thing to do in order to move on with our lives. We often apologize to others and feel better when we know they have forgiven us. What happens when the person who has hurt you is you? There are parts of you that you are going cherish and nurture, while there are areas of growth that By are going to James cause you Miller turmoil. You can’t truly be at peace with yourself if you only cherry-pick the areas that you are proud of. In order for your mind, body, and spirit to work in concert you must find compassion for yourself in the areas in which you struggle. Learning to forgive yourself is the first step in finding inner peace. Most of us would not go up to strangers and say hurtful things to them if they have hurt us in some way. However, the majority of
us have no problem saying negative, hurtful things to ourselves after we have done something that we aren’t proud of. Did you realize that in mentally speaking these negative things to yourself that you are essentially engaging in emotional abuse? There are certain behaviors that you engage in that have become habits. You’ve told yourself you won’t do them again but find yourself in this vicious loop of action and then regret. For example, you tell yourself you won’t date a certain type of person and the next thing you know, you are in a relationship with this type of person. Or, you are struggling with losing weight and you find yourself late at night eating something you told yourself you wouldn’t eat again. Another example, you know you shouldn’t engage in a partying lifestyle, but you find yourself eagerly returning to these addictive behaviors. When you have the realization that you have betrayed yourself what is the first thing you do? Do you berate yourself or do you start the process of internal forgiving? What does it mean to forgive yourself? I encourage my clients to do one of two
things: either verbally speak or write to oneself. There are essentially two parts of you, the part that chooses to engage in the behavior and the part of you that is frustrated, embarrassed or hurt. The part of you that screwed up is the part that needs to apologize to the healthier side of you. When you have either a verbal dialogue or write it down in narrative form it gives both “parties” an opportunity to have a healthy dialogue about what has happened and how it has affected the person as a whole. It may sound odd, but when you hold the part of you that continues to engage in negative behaviors accountable it helps you learn from your past mistakes and formulate a proactive plan rather than spend time and energy berating yourself and continuing a pattern of negative self-talk. Regardless of the behavior you’ve engaged in and how long ago the situation transpired you have a choice. Do you continue to look down on yourself for these negative behaviors or do you start the process of internal forgiveness? Forgiving yourself is the only way you will truly find inner peace. nn

BRAINY QUOTES FOR A POSITIVE LIFE I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we’re all teachers - if we’re willing to pay attention to the lessons that we learned, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks. No matter what you’re going through, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and it may seem hard to get to it, but you can do it. Just keep working towards it and you’ll find the positive side of things. Stay positive, learn from others but don’t forget to also teach. Here are five brainy quotes that can help with your visions.

DALIA LAMA In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision. JOEL OSTEEN You’re going to go through tough times - that’s life. But I say, ‘Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.’ See the positive in negative events. KOBE BRYANT The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do. PAT RILEY If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges. KESHA I believe in karma, and I believe if you put out positive vibes to everybody, that’s all you’re going to get back. It takes but one positive thought to overpower an entire army of negative thoughts. Your destiny is to fulfill those things upon which you focus.
