A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. Wait a second, I’m confused. We are Facebook friends but you’re a web camera model? And I’m supposed to pay money for you to take off your clothes? Why on earth would I do that when the Internet is made for porn? THE HAPPY BABY POSE. Everybody tells me “do yoga, do yoga, It will help relax you.” Meanwhile, if they only knew about my history of getting thrown out of a yoga class at the Greenwich Village YMCA in 2000 for laughing uncontrollably when somebody farted in the class. They would understand why it’s just not an option.

So much better than Charles in Charge, Antonio Sabato Jr., the wrestling promoter, and the guy from “Duck Dynasty” whose beard probably smells like old gin and spousal abuse. DATE NIGHT. Settling in for the evening with a good Lifetime movie, complete with C list actors, an obviously Vancouver film set, and plenty of cringe worthy dialogue! I love it! THE PRICE OF BEAUTY. Omg! Omg! Christie Brinkley worked with BRILLIANT scientists to formulate her new skin cream, I must have it now so I can maintain my fresh and dewy look! YOU GO GURL! Michelle Obama has got me feeling like a strong black woman tonight! Oprah who? POKÉMON GO? Please, in my day kids were into the hard-core shit! Namely V.C. Andrews’ books like “Flowers in the Attic” wholesome literature dealing with incest and mothers locking their children away in the attic in an effort to kill them. DEAR BERNIE SANDERS PEOPLE. I applaud you making history with shaking things up and standing behind your man. I think he is a good man, with good values, who is really standing behind the working class people of America. But there’s also a time to put your big girl panties on and understand the situation that lies before us. Go vote for Jill Stein. It’s a vote in the pocket of Donald Trump at the end of the day. Your Bernie Sanders tattoo will be a funny conversation piece in a couple of years. FOR OUR PET ISSUE. Just remember people, ditch society. Inspired by Presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan, Cyrus posted a photo of her wearing the t-shirt to her Instagram account, captioned simply “f*ckkk ya.” Made in Chelsea star Ollie Locke has come out as gay. The 29-year-old actor, who revealed he was bisexual back in 2011, says he now identifies as gay. Locke commented, “He is now ready and looking for a male companion after realizing he is no longer bisexual. It’s the first time the viewers have seen me as gay instead of bi. I do say the words ‘I am a gay man.’”

Ilene Berliner Steps Down For the past nine years, Ilene Berliner has served on the Board of Directors for The Pride Center at Equality Park. She has maxed out her term and Mark Budwig took her place as Board Chair effective July 1. “Ilene was an enthusiastic and involved Board Chair. Her involvement was unprecedented. Advocate Marc Hansen Dead at 53 Marc Hansen was serving as a Med Tech in the Air Force when he discovered that he was HIV positive in 1985, at the age of 22. The Laguana Beach, California, native, was determined that it would not be a death sentence, at a time when there were few options for treatment and even fewer services for patients. When Hansen moved to South Florida in 1989, he dedicated himself to serving the community he loved, becoming president of Pride South Florida, organizers of Pride6

Fest, the annual Fort Lauderdale Pride festival. He also met and began a longterm relationship with Mark Maybee at the now-closed Hideaway Bar. At the time, Maybee was a manager at Hamburger Mary’s (now Rosie’s Bar & Grill), and the pair became a common sight at community functions and fundraisers. According to Maybee, Hansen had been ill for months with a blood infection that ultimately caused his death. Funeral and memorial services were still pending at press time. nn
Pink Pistols Announces Range Day Event FORT LAUDERDALE--Pink Pistols Fort Lauderdale/Broward announces that its first range day event will take place on Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 2 pm-4 pm. The event will take place at the Nexus Shooting Range, located at 2600 Davie Road. Davie, FL 33314. The event is open to Pink Pistols members and other members of the GLBT community interested in shooting and learning about frrearms as part of their self defense. Pink Pistols Fort Lauderdale/ Broward was founded in June 2016 in response to the Pulse Nightclub tragedy in Orlando Florida. Pink Pistols Fort Lauderdale/Broward is an affiliated chapter of Pink Pistols National. Pink Pistols chapters have existed across the country since 2000 and were founded as a direct result of violence against gays. According to Jonathan Rauch, writing in Salon Magazine, “Thirty-one states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states,homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And
they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible.” There are now over 45 Pink Pistols chapters nationwide, and more are starting up every day. MOSCOW (AP) - Jim Mulcahy was sitting with some Russian friends, munching cookies and talking about Roman mosaics, when the Russian police came and took him away, claiming he was planning to perform a samesex marriage. Hours later, the American pastor was ordered to leave Russia. Mulcahy’s arrest this month in the city of Samara braids together several of Russia’s most acrimonious issues: gay rights, alleged Western meddling in Russian affairs, and missionary work by religions that don’t have state approval. It attracted particular attention because the arrest was filmed by state-controlled channel NTV, whose reports often take an especially truculent, proKremlin stance. nn
November trial set for cases over North Carolina LGBT law
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) - A federal court has set a November trial date for dueling lawsuits over a North Carolina law that limits protections for LGBT people. A written order signed Monday by a federal magistrate judge says the trial will begin Nov. 14. The order says the federal judge overseeing the cases will decide whether they should be tried jointly or organized in a different manner for trial. The law requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates in many public buildings and excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from statewide antidiscrimination protections. nn
TRANSGENDER TEEN ASKS COURT NOT TO BAR HIM FROM RESTROOM
RICHMOND, VA (AP) - An attorney for a transgender teen in Virginia is urging the U.S. Supreme Court not to bar him from using the boys restroom when he returns to school this fall. In a brief filed Tuesday in the high court, Josh Block of the American Civil Liberties Union says the Gloucester County School Board has failed to show that it will be irreparably harmed by allowing Gavin Grimm to use the restroom that corresponds with his gender identity while his case plays out in lower courts. The school board filed an emergency appeal with Chief Justice John Roberts earlier this month after a federal appeals court denied its request to block Grimm from using the boys restroom when school resumes in September. nn
NEW ORLEANS MAN ARRESTED IN MISSISSIPPI STABBING DEATH
PASCAGOULA, MS (AP) - A Navy seaman in training has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the weekend stabbing death of a transgender woman. The Sun-Herald reports that the suspect is Dwanya Hickerson, 20, of New Orleans. The victim was Dee Whigham, 25, of Shubuta, who police say was killed at a hotel in the St. Martin area Saturday night. Authorities said robbery was involved, but Sheriff Mike Ezell said that authorities were looking into whether the stabbing should be classified as a hate crime. “If this turns out to be a hate crime, we will pursue this to the fullest in court,” Ezell said. Jackson County Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Stratton said Hickerson is the man caught on surveillance photos leaving the hotel where Whigman was staying with friends and co-workers. The group was in town for the Gulf Coast Black Rodeo. nn
Indiana GOP panel backs Gov. Pence’s preferred successor
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Republican leaders selected Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb on Tuesday to replace Gov. Mike Pence on the November ballot, backing the governor’s preferred successor over two members of Congress who also sought the nomination when Pence withdrew to become Donald Trump’s running mate. After a private meeting, the 22-member Indiana Republican state committee announced it had decided Holcomb was best positioned to retain the governor’s office. He’ll face a tough fall matchup against Democrat John Gregg, a former Indiana House speaker who narrowly lost to Pence in the 2012 election. nn
Transgender school bathrooms still debated in Kansas town
DERBY, KS (AP) - A south-central Kansas school district is letting students use bathrooms matching their gender identity as a local task force explores the issue. The Wichita Eagle reports the governing board of the Derby school system made that decision Monday. The Obama administration in May directed public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity. Derby officials have said they’d comply. The state’s education board has voted to ignore the directive, arguing local schools are best suited to decide how to handle issues transgender students face. nn
North Carolina GOP spends over $176,000 to defend House Bill 2 RALEIGH, NC (AP) - More than $176,000 is being billed to North Carolina taxpayers by attorneys hired by Republican politicians to defend the transgender bathroom law. A review of submitted legal bills provided to The Associated Press through a public records request found law firms in Washington and Charlotte representing GOP state legislative leaders have charged more than $129,000. Gov. Pat McCrory’s lawyers have billed nearly $47,000. The law firms working on the case haven’t all submitted invoices and the case is likely to take months or even years to resolve. The Importance of the Democratic National Convention and LGBTs

The Democratic National Convention played out this week in Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love and home to the birthplace of our nation. There was the predictable line-up of speakers, and the formal nomination of Hillary Clinton as the first female presidential candidate from a major political party in our country, and Virginia Senator Tom Kaine, as her vice-presidential running mate. In reality, however, the Democratic National Convention symbolized far more than the traditional nominating showcase for the party’s BY White House RICHARD candidates. This convenHACK tion carried with it a mandate to take back America from the hate and fear mongers that terrorized the nation for much of the previous week as the Republican Party held its convention in Cleveland. The world was watching as First Lady Michelle Obama took to the Democratic convention stage and mesmerized us by being, at once, political and apolitical, stirring and comforting, as she glided between patriotism, feminism, family, home, race and partisanship, eloquently reminding all of us that what we had been hearing the previous week from the Republican Presidential nominee was not only untrue, but radically irresponsible. The First Lady reminded us that America has not lost its way, has not forgotten its past, and has not 8

become some sort of vigilante state that needed to be made great again. “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great—that somehow we need to make it great again—because this right now is the greatest country on Earth,” she told the audience. “And as my daughters prepare to set out into the world, I want a leader who is worthy of that truth.” There was a steadiness in her eyes and voice that dared you to doubt that she spoke the truth. None of the shouting we had seen from the Republican carnival. No naked pandering to prejudice that Donald Trump had dared to pass off as reality. His address was a toxic combination of unsubstantiated claims. “Excessive regulation is costing our country as much as $2 trillion a year,” Trump said, before added that ending such regulation will produce more then $20 trillion in job-creating economic activity.” Trump also dared to repeat his ridiculous assumption that “NATO is obsolete,” as if any organization that worked toward world peace could possible become archaic— ever. In any other election year, such talk along with the verbal bashing that Trump has directed toward Mexicans and Muslims, as well as the character assassination of Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, would have had the international press reeling in disbelief and demanding that the Republican party disown itself from such absurd and mindless chatter. Instead, journalists have been so barraged by the never-ending insults and farcicalities that no one can focus on any single insult, the barrage is that great. And then suddenly reason re-
turned to America in the form of the First Lady of the United States whose approval rating has reached nearly 80 percent across all political parties, races and religions. “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” the First Lady said. “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn,” she continued. “And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” As we move now away from conventions and into months of predictably contentious campaigning, the LGBT community is going to find itself stage center: disparaged by the Republicans as being everything from unnatural to evil, and embraced by the Democrats as being part of a nation that places equality at its cornerstone of our heritage. It is quite likely that Florida will again be the state that decides this election, just as it’s been in previous presidential campaigns. The difference this time is that the fabric of our very nation is at stake, and the future of the world as we know it is going to be decided.

The Republicans know that as well. It is for that reason and no other that Donald Trump made history on the final day of his convention by embracing the LGBT community—the first mention of gays in any Republican convention, a move considered by many to be a watershed moment. That such a gratuitous gesture came at the end of one of the most aggressive sessions of the Republican-led Congress is as hollow as it is transparent. Make no mistake. Just as the world’s eyes were on the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia for signs of strength in the face of lunacy, bigotry and threats, so too is the world watching America’s LGBT community to rise above the name-calling and insecurities of the past to stand proud in our conviction that equality is not only possible, it is expected. The reality for every LGBT American is that we are no longer the followers, but the leaders. Taking back America is up to every one of us, and the battle has just begun. FBI Should Have To Prove Pulse Shooter Wasn’t Targeting Gays, Not The Other Way Around

Like many in the LGBT community, Ed Bailey found it hard to stomach the FBI’s recent conclusion that the Pulse Orlando shooter was not targeting gays. “While we may never know what was truly in the heart of the shooter, any assumption that LGBT people were not the ‘target’ is irresponsible and in my own opinion impossible to say,” said Bailey, co-owner with John Guggenmos of one of Washington DC’s most prominent gay nightclubs, Town Danceboutique. “Whether he was himself gay or not, is irrelevant,” said Bailey. “He chose to shoot and kill LGBT people — and maybe he had come to the conclusion that gay people are ‘sinners’ or maybe he just hated himself — either way, it all stems from the same homophobic place.” Bailey was speaking a few days after a benefit evening held at his club to raise funds for the families of Pulse victims. Under the auspices of Broadway Cares/Equity BY Fights Aids, cast LINDA members of the PENTZ visiting national tour of the musical, The Bridges of Madison County, performed numbers from the show and others, to a small, but receptive audience. Bailey’s criticism is apt, because the investigation was conducted on the wrong premise. The question the FBI should have been asking is “Can we prove that Mateen was not targeting gays,” not “Can we prove that he was?” After all, the man shot up a gay nightclub. That’s a pretty big clue. But this is not how things go. Big polluters don’t have to prove that

they are not responsible for poisoning people. The poisoned invariably have to prove it was the big polluter who sickened them. The burden of proof falls on those affected to show they were deliberately victimized. Instead, we should apply the Precautionary Principle. And so it was with Pulse. It’s obviously preposterous to imagine that Mateen just wandered into Pulse by chance and didn’t notice it was a gay venue (particularly as there is plenty of evidence that he had been there before). He chose it, and that should have been the starting premise of the federal investigation. Wandering into Town on a pleasant Monday evening to watch the Bridges cabaret, begged another question: how has the atmosphere inside the club been post-Pulse? On that evening it was cheerful and intimate, with no sense of apprehension among the guests. But then it was not a typical evening at Town. Or was it? “To my personal surprise, the numbers at the clubs in DC are up after the tragedy in Orlando,” said Bailey. “The shooting happened on DC’s Pride weekend, so, normally, our numbers would be down following a big weekend like Pride, and then adding the presumption that people might be a little nervous about attending a big club, we anticipated lower turnouts in June and July,” he added. “To our heart warming surprise, the numbers have been higher than normal. I’ve heard the same from other bar owners in DC. It is so inspiring to feel as though everyone
has stood up and said ‘I’m not afraid’ and ‘I need to go out and be with my community,’” he concluded. The theme for the Bridges evening, taken straight from the musical’s lyrics, was particularly timely and resonant — “Love is always better.” This worked especially well, recalled cast member Amy Linden, when the tour hit North Carolina. It caused some soul-searching, but being able to belt out “love is always better” in the lion’s den of discrimination felt like the right thing to do. Broadway Cares, as Bridges cast member, Cole Burden explained, is an agile entity that responds on its feet to current needs. For example,
in the past it has given money to victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy, and can respond quickly wherever there is a call for help. But after Pulse, and the disappointing FBI report, many in the LGBT community continue to feel that their own calls for help are not being heard. “As politicians and lawmakers work to enforce a sense that LGBT people are less than full citizens by continuing to deny us general, common protections and rights that all other Americans enjoy, they are only working to validate the violence that befalls our community,” said Bailey. nn

I Alone vs. Strength Together
I ALONE:
We got a big taste of what the Republican party is about at the RNC. A wide variety of speakers took the podium. We heard Happy Day’s Scott “Chaci” Baio’s very lackluster speech. Gov. Rick Scott and AG Pam Bondi, who IMHO, did their typical pandering. The RNC even had a gay man speak. Peter Thiel, cofounder of PayPal. In his speech, he told attendees (in part) “proud to be gay. I am proud to be a Republican. But most of all, I am proud to be an American.” While it was considered by some historic to see or hear an LGBT person speak at the RNC, BY REV. especially after their very anti-gay platform was JOEL revealed, I have to quesSLOTNICK tion: Why this man? He certainly doesn’t represent the average LGBT person. Is it because he is very wealthy? Why didn’t the RNC seek out someone from “the community” living the everyday life, actually living in the real world of trouble and disdain for who they are? The RNC all but spit in the face of the Log Cabin Republicans, who have sung the praises of the Republican party for as long as I can remember. It’s no secret how I and many feel about the LCR. We just don’t understand how anyone could ever support people who would rather see you disappear than stand by your side. But to each his or her own. I do hope this was a wakeup call to the LCR’s and they see their party as many others do and find some other way to support change in America with people who will include them as LGBT. If there was a shock moment in the convention, it had to be former presidential candidate Ted Cruz. While Ted is one person I have not anything favorable to say about, I will applaud him for not pandering to Trump by endorsing him. The mudslinging sure flew at him as soon as he left the stage. Media jumped on it in seconds and it was a big topic for a few days.
A surprise, but not a shock: Trump’s choice for VP, Mike Pence. Donald, if this is how you show the LGBTQI communities that you’re their friend, I can only imagine who your choice would be if you disliked us! And then there is the man himself, Donald J. Trump. I was hardly surprised at his attacks on President Obama and Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton. I don’t think anyone else was either. I’m not even going to go into that normal diatribe. You can’t expect anything less. What was interesting was during Trump’s speech, the words “I alone can fix it.” The Atlantic.com (July 21, 2016) didn’t waste time at all talking about this in an article of the same title. In a nutshell, I hear this as Trump saying that he will do whatever he wants and nobody is going to stop him. I found this quite interesting considering his very party has stopped President Obama doing many things just about since day one. It was their goal to stifle President Obama on any and everything, and will continue to be status quo until his last day in office. “I Alone” certainly doesn’t sound like “Make America Great Again,” and that’s scary.

More importantly, I knew very little about Tim Kaine, and it was important for me to find out as much as I could, especially after looking him up on Wikipedia after being announced as the selected running mate for Hillary Clinton. Sometimes you have to see a person right in front of you to see what your gut reaction is. I was amazed at not only the energy, but the amount of younger adults in attendance. Maybe it had to do with the rally being held on FIU’s campus, but still, a great sight to behold. While I was very excited to both see and hear Hillary in person for the first time ever, I pretty much felt I knew her. I wanted to hear from the stranger, Tim Kaine. He took to the podium and seemed to have won everyone over almost immediately. Big smile, a personality to the point you would want Tim to be your friend, and hang out and talk, laugh. He was far from a stiff speaking politician. Tim worked the crowd and spoke to everyone as if he was addressing them one on one. Very personal, very as a matter of fact, and very to the point. I was blown away at his background. But what I believe won everyone over the most was the fact his very human side came out while he was talking about the worst day in his life--the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings. He literally stopped to regain his composure. Now, some will see that as weak. I see it as a real person who isn’t afraid to be himself. “Strength Together.” As a team, I saw that on Saturday. For those of you who may question, I am registered NPA, especially after being disenchanted with both parties for some time. I do have hopes both mainstream parties will one day come back to what they once were. Do your homework, get to know your candidates AND VOTE! I leave you with this quote from U.S. Senator Tim Kaine: “Do you want to be right or do right?”

Was anyone really surprised that Donald Trump picked Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his co-captain for the most terrifying boat ride since the Titanic? Pence may be best known for signing Indiana’s “just say no to gays” law, the intention of which was to give anti-gay bigots free reign to discriminate against LGBT people so long as their discrimination stemmed from a deeply held religious belief. In other words, if a baker doesn’t want to make a cake for some kind of homo wedding, he just needs to point out that “God hates fags” and he’s in the clear. As God intended. This law gave anti-gay bigots major boners which they presumably showed off during the secret signing session Pence held for them. After the business community freaked out, Pence signed a little fix to the bill to make it less anti-gay, but it was basically window dressing. Ah, but Pence’s anti-gay record is much longer than just some silly little discrimination law that brought scorn heaped 12

upon his state and resulted in a loss of millions of dollars. In 2006 as a Senator, Pence supported amending the U.S. Constitution to ban marriage equality. He said letting same sex couples marry would bring upon “societal collapse.” Clearly he was foreshadowing a Trump-Pence presidential run. He was also against the Employment Non Discrimination Act, claiming in 2007, “By extending the reach of federal law to cover sexual orientation, employment discrimination protections, in effect, can wage war on the free exercise of religion in the workplace.” Because, you know, protecting LGBT from discrimination is totally comparable to the horrors of war. And speaking of war, Pence didn’t want any homos in the military because they would try to touch other privates’ privates. Oh, and speaking of the uncontrollable sexual perversions of gays, Pence thought that money for HIV/AIDS would be much better spent on anti-gay conversion therapy. Because if you stop all those gays from being gay it’ll stop
this gay disease. Oh, he also was against needle exchange programs. Because he clearly was an HIV/AIDS expert. Remember when Donald Trump claimed that the gays loved him? That he was actually a better champion of gay rights than Hillary Clinton? Wasn’t true then, and even less true now. “Donald Trump just doubled down on his agenda of hate and discrimination by choosing the notoriously anti-LGBTQ Mike Pence for his ticket,” Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement. But hey, doubling down on bad decisions is right in Trump’s wheelhouse, whether in business or politics. The Republican platform this year is one of most anti-gay in history. Clearly they are hoping that when voters go to the polls they will hate gays more than they hate Trump. Hey, it worked in the past. And the past – where women can’t get abortions, where brown people can’t vote, where gays can’t marry – is what the Republicans love best. nn

On the ballot in Indiana Governor race The 2016 Indiana gubernatorial election will take place on November 8, 2016, to elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, concurrently with the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Incumbent Republican Governor Mike Pence was running for reelection to a second term in office until July 15, 2016, when presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump selected Pence as his vice presidential running mate. As Pence was barred by Indiana law from simultaneously running for both offices, he subsequently withdrew from the gubernatorial election. He was replaced on the ballot for Governor by his former running mate, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb, who was selected by the Indiana Republican State Committee as the nominee on July 26, 2016. Welcome to the Agenda’s First Issue devoted to fins, feathers and fur. On second thought, maybe we have covered those before, but these fins, feathers and fur belong to our pets. Pets are our family, our surrogate children and our best friends. Our animals are here to perch on a finger and meet us nose to nose, to head to the beach and play in the surf, to insist on a scratch when we’re deep in a book, to greet us at the door like we’ve been gone for years, to carry the rings on our wedding BY days, to bark, meow, MAURA chirp, splash and squawk to communiLANE cate their affection. My love for animals has been deep since I could walk. My first pet was a duck, Anne B, named after my mother. I was a toddler so it was easy for Anne B to imprint himself on me and together we spent our days roaming the backyard until a family move forced us to give him a new home in a city pond with fellow fowl. Snakes, hamsters, hermit crabs, love birds, Sun Conures, mutts, chameleons, Dobermans, Great Pyrenees, Chihuahuas, Domestic Shorthairs, turtles, frogs, Yorkies, Morkies, and canaries have all been part of my family. When we moved to Florida, our friend Craig showed us his home in Victoria Park with custom-built aviaries filled with finches, love birds, green parrots and cockatiels. The home had giant salt water fish tanks filled with urchins and corral. There was an outdoor pond with foot-long orange and white koi and fancy goldfish. I was inspired on what could be done and lucky that Ilene was patient and let me bring home all the critters I could find. After a couple years of lost lovebirds and canaries, we decided dogs were our best bet. We have three, Happy
(2) from Diamonds and Doggies, Minnelli (7), given to us at a Stars of the Rainbow Event, and Garland (13) rescued from Broward Animal Shelter during Hurricane Charlie in 2004. Pet ownership has long been part of the gay lifestyle. According to Nielsen 2014 survey LGBT households spend 32% more than non LGBT households in pet supply stores. According to a study by the ASPCA 71% of LGBT people own pets compared to 63 percent of non-LGBT people. Americans spent over 60 billion dollars in 2015 on their pets. Not surprising to the LGBT consumer who, no matter the income level, makes pampering a priority. In this issue, we are fortunate to have many new writers in the community sharing stories and information. Local Chiropractic Physician Dr. Donna Watson begins her column in this issue. Dr. Donna is the Founder of Dr. Donna’s Pet Foundation, a leading organization working with Broward Animal control on creative solutions to over population and pet rescue. My pal Claudia Lebel shares her Doodle Biscuits in our Secret Recipe section. Even our Tropical Gardener Chuck Nichols provides do’s and don’ts in the yard for healthy pets. Also included is a comprehensive listing of veterinarians, boarding facilities and pets parks--a nice list to keep on hand for a resource. Our team at Agenda shares their pet photos along with critters costumed for Pride. South Florida is very pet friendly. Many restaurants, apartment buildings, parks and shopping areas welcome them. LGBTs and their Pets
T
he idea of gays fawning over their pets is as stereotypical as limp wrists, running mascara and drag queens. More than just the stuff of legends, there is a solid foundation in this tale, confirmed by none other than the prestigious Harris Polling Service. According to the folks at Harris, 71 percent of gays own pets (compared with 63 percent of heterosexuals). We love cats as much as dogs, with fewer of us owning birds (seven percent), fish (14 percent), while the “other� category accounts for such unusual pets as ferrets, iguanas,
hamsters, snakes, spiders and turtles. Pet supplies and care is a $52 billion industry. The average LGBT pet owner spends over $3,000 per year on grooming services, special pet walkers and sitters, food, gifts, clothing, veterinary services and medication. Our staff at the Agenda are pet lovers all. A trip to our offices will confirm that point as dogs are as welcome as our cover models and advertisers. RESCUE ANIMALS: THE BEST PETS FOR LGBT OWNERS
If you’re a pet owner yourself, you probably already know that the LGBT community is extremely pet-friendly: according to a recent poll, over 70 percent of LGBT adults are pet owners, compared with only 60 percent of straight adults. For many of these LGBT “pet parents,” cats and dogs rescued from animal shelters can make the best pets, providing a loving companion while supporting local animal rescue and giving pets a forever home. While there isn’t much information out there about why rescue pets are the best pets for LGBT individuals and families, or whether LGBT folks tend to adopt more pets than straight people, there is definitely a connection between shelter animals and the LGBT community, and several reasons to look into adopting an animal from your local shelter. THE BEST PETS FIND YOU Ask anyone who’s adopted a pet from a shelter and they’ll tell you: they didn’t choose their pet, their pet chose them. For LGBT pet owners, the decision to adopt a cat or dog might come from a desire for companionship, wanting to be responsible for another life, or simply a lifelong wish to have a furry member of the family. Rescuing a pet instead of buying one from a pet store or breeder has a number of benefits for owners and animals alike: Pet owners can focus on connecting with the best pets for their lives and activities, rather than spending a small fortune on a designer breed or supporting puppy mills. Supporting local shelters provides resources: whether it’s through an adoption fee or simply freeing up space for another homeless animal, shelters rely on adoptions to continue rescuing animals. Rescue pets are some of the most loyal and caring: it may be because they’ve been given a new lease on life thanks to being adopted, or just sheer joy that the right human finally came along, but you won’t find a more affectionate pet than a shelter rescue. The best pets aren’t the ones that cost the most money: they’re the ones that need you the most, and for many members of the LGBT community,
adopting a pet is an incredible way to enrich more than one life. THE BEST PETS, OR THE BEST YOU? Visiting a shelter for the first time, many LGBT pet parents are struck by the number of homeless animals and are moved to provide a better life for one (or more!) of them. While there are many reasons pet owners might choose to adopt a cat or a dog from a shelter, some particular benefits that might drive LGBT owners toward adoption: Empathy: LGBT pet owners understand what it’s like being treated as an “outsider,” LGBT individuals may have to face intolerance, cruelty, and even neglect in their lives, and ending these struggles for a rescue animal can create a lifelong bond. Health: There have been countless studies on the connection between owning a pet and living a healthy life. Whether it’s the exercise you get from taking a dog for a long walk or the mental health boost provided by a cat curled up on your lap, it’s clear that adding a pet to your home enriches your life and theirs. You Look Great: this may not be the first benefit you think of when rescuing a shelter pet, but it’s undeniable that someone who saves an animal suddenly becomes much more attractive. Kindness and compassion look good on anyone. Whatever your reason for adopting, rescue animals make the best pets because it’s not about having a transaction like buying a pet from a store: it’s saving a life, and giving a thankful and happy animal a stable home. SKIP THE STORE, FIND THE BEST PETS The number of LGBT pet owners is continuing to grow, and as the problems with breeders and pet stores keep surfacing, we’re sure to see even more members of the community turn toward adoption and rescue. Every year over 40,000 dogs in the US die from drowning in a pool. The common belief is that dogs naturally know how to swim. This is not true. Dogs know the panic “dog paddle.” This is not swimming. The “dog paddle” is the frantic moving of their front legs which puts their bodies in a vertical position. This position can exhaust them quickly and result in drowning. All three of my pups, Garland, Minnelli and Happy are good swimmers because we took the time to teach them. The swimming lessons included practice on how to enter and exit the pool. Teaching your dog to swim is a fun activity and with patience and play, they might just love the pool as much as you do! To get your dog to feel comfortable in the pool, you need to be comfortable in the pool. Let them see you jump in and have fun. After they see that the pool is a fun place, grab their favorite toy and take it in with you. Start by sitting on your pool steps and tossing the toy in the water just a few feet from you. Retrieve the toy yourself and use your “good boy/girl” voice. Tossing the ball or toy in the pool will make them want to join in. While still on the steps, ease your pup into your lap or on the step with you. Make the game about both of you getting the toy. Slowly move further off the step or in water and bring your voice up with praise and excitement. Be sure to use a toy that is easy for them to bite and retrieve while in the water. Favorite stuffed toys are fine; just make sure they can float. Repeat the game until your dog is reaching at least halfway across the pool and understands that the steps are the best exit. Keep your dog from trying to go up on the side of the pool by continuing to toss the toy from the steps to the middle and helping them stay on the route to the steps. The next day, try encouraging your pup to jump from the side of the pool and to 20

exit by using the steps. Use the same method with you doing the retrieving and returning. Don’t be surprised if your pup grabs the toy and hides far from the pool. Just get up and bring it back in the water. Your dog will always try to please you, but watch for water up the nose, and exhaustion. Keep play to a time that is good for your pup. If your pool doesn’t have steps, purchase a Skamper ramp. Some large breeds like Labradors and Retrievers are more likely to love the water but toy dogs like Yorkies, Maltese and Pomeranians can enjoy a dip on hot summer day if you make it fun and safe for them to play. nn

Caring for your dog
To help prevent health concerns in your dog, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of checking your dog regularly for any changes or signs of illness. When checking your dog, it’s important to be vigilant, as your dog can’t tell you if they are feeling unwell. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact your vet right away. To help keep your dog healthy, we’ve put together an easy to follow checklist. Health checklist
Body condition– You should just be able to feel the ribs and no more. There should be a waist between your dog’s ribs and hips and the belly should not sag. Watch for signs of weight loss or gain. Ears– Should be clear of any thick brown or green wax and have no smell. Some long-eared breeds benefit from regular ear cleaning with special ear cleaners. Be careful what you use to clean the ears, the skin in this area can be very sensitive. And don’t clean too deeply or vigorously, as the eardrum can be easily perforated. Eyes– Should be bright and clear, with no signs of runniness, redness or soreness. Your dog
should not shy away from light as if it hurts the eyes. Eye problems can sometimes be accompanied by flu symptoms. Nose– There should be no crusting on the surface, runny discharges or bleeding. Noses can change from black to pink and back again, something that can vary through the year. The nose being cold or wet has no correlation to illness. Breath– Bad Breath is not just a cosmetic or social problem (we all know dogs with bad breath can be less-than-pleasant company). Bad breath can indicate a digestive problem or bad teeth, which could potentially lead to organ problems if left untreated. To find out more about combating bad breath, view Supercoat Dental Chews. Oral hygiene– Teeth should be white with no excess tartar, which looks thick and brown. The gums should be pink or black, not red or swollen. To find out more about improving oral hygiene, view Supercoat Dental Chews. Skin and coat– Your dog’s skin can be pink or black, depending on the pigments normally found in the breed. The coat should be healthy and shiny with no broken hairs. And both should be free of any scruffy dandruff or sores. Hair can be shed all year round, but it’s normally worse in summer and autumn so you’ll need a good
vacuum cleaner. Some breeds like poodles don’t shed, although they need clipping regularly. Nails– Should be smooth and can be white or black. Nails that are roughened and break easily may require attention. When checking the nails, remember the dewclaws found on the inside of the leg just below the wrist. Some dogs have them on the front legs only; some have them front and back; and some don’t have any at all. Digestion– Keep an eye on your dog’s appetite for any noticeable changes. This can be very difficult to tell if the dog is new to you or a very fussy eater. There should be no sickness or choking when eating. Stools should be a normal colour with no diarrhoea, constipation or mucus (clear jelly) passed. Thirst– If your dog suddenly becomes thirsty or starts drinking more than usual, consult your vet. Attitude– Your dog’s general attitude to life can tell you a lot. If you notice that his head and tail are down, it usually means your dog is feeling under the weather. Poorly dogs can also skulk in corners, or even dig holes in the garden to lie in. If you’re worried, ask your vet for advice. It is important to be aware of your dog’s health and happiness, so keep an eye on them and, if in doubt, consult a vet. nn

nfortunately in South Florida. there are poisonous plants that may affect the health of your pet. When reviewing this list, it is important to know that all parts of a given plant may not be poisonous. For example, the stems of Rhubarb are a delicious food item; however, the leaves and roots are toxic to some individuals. It may be the flowers, the foliage, roots or seeds that are toxic. The Poinsettia plant exudes a white liquid that can also prove toxic. It is also important to know that not all plants are toxic to all breeds of cats and dogs. Nevertheless, one should be aware that a plant or plant part may be toxic if ingested. The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has a list of over 1000 plants reported to having systemic effects on animals. Many of the plants listed as house plants are also plants that can be grown

outdoors in this area. This list is not inclusive but rather a compilation of plants mostly encounter as reported to the organization. Some of the more common plants grown that may be toxic to your animals in South Florida: Azaleas, Kalanchoes, Oleander, Water Hyacinths, Warneckei Dracena, Wandering Jew, Diffenbachias, Ti Plant, Lantana, Jade plant, Gloriosa Lily and Poinsettias. I will admit that I have grown many of these plants in the garden, and my two Boxer dogs have had no problem with them. I would strongly suggest that as a pet owner, you check out the ASPCA website (http:// www.aspca.org/apcc). If you have a pet emergency you can call the organization at any time as they are available 24 hours every day of the year (888-426-4435). Depending on the nature of the call, there may be a consultation fee of $65.00.

THE SECRET RECIPE

DOODLE DOG BISCUITS INGREDIENTS 2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup wheat germ ½ cup ground flax seed 1 tablespoon honey 3 eggs ½ cup oil 1 cup water ½ cup applesauce ½ cup pumpkin puree Cooking spray INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 DEGREES Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray or wipe pan with shortening and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour,
wheat germ, and flax seed. Set aside. In another mixing bowl, combining honey, eggs, oil, water, applesauce and pumpkin puree until well combined. Pour into dry ingredients and stir until well-mixed. Form into a disc and roll out on a well-floured surface until about ¼” thick. Sometimes it it is easier to roll it out between two pieces of parchment paper. Using a doggie bone cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place on prepared baking sheet about 1” apart. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until treats are very brown and very hard. Makes 3 dozen Let cool completely before giving them to your beautiful dog to try out. Store in an airtight container out-ofreach of your puppy.

Kitty Mating Season?? Who knew???

Here in South Florida, a vastly underrecognized phenomenon is Kitty Season. Stray cats tend to mate in our streets between May 1st to September 30th. As a result, around 1,800 kittens will enter the Broward County Shelter by next October, and many will not make it out alive. In an effort to break this cycle, the Broward County Shelter has implemented a “Foster Program.” Every kitten needs fostering until they are eight weeks old. At that time, they can be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, then placed up for adoption by the shelter. Currently, however, kittens arrive so young that they need to be bottle fed every two hours in order to survive. There aren’t the resources of employees or volunteers who can hand-feed hundreds of kittens a month. The shelter is no place for newborns as they are very prone to infection and many die from viruses while there. They get there by local residents who trap them and bring them to the shelter thinking they are helping. It is tempting to try to save the baby kittens at the corner house. It pulls at your heart. But the reality is that you probably shouldn’t. Even the most well-meaning are actually creating a situation for those kit-

tens that may lead to their death. Generally speaking, unless they are in distress or immediate danger, it is always best to leave kittens in that place because there is a food source somewhere nearby. Remember, the mother has pick that spot for a reason. If mom is not there, it’s probably because she’s hunting or moving them. Kittens should not be moved or picked up unless it’s known for sure that she’s not coming back because of injury, etc. They need their mother’s milk to survive and build their immunity. The Broward Shelter Director Thomas Adair states, “Kittens less than 4 weeks old cannot live without their mother, and must be bottle fed around the clock in order to survive and build immunity.” Here is a great link for teaching you what to do right from the experts: http://www.broward.org/Animal/Resources/ Pages/FoundKittens.aspx. All of which brings me back to the Foster Program. This is typically only a 2-4 week commitment for older kittens, while newborns are more like 6-8 weeks. Food and supplies will be provided to you. If you can take two, then you can save two lives, etc. Medi-
cal care is provided by the shelter. The program is available for any Broward County residents; and if you have animals in your household, they must be vaccinated. As for the kittens, they can be kept in a crate or bathtub. They do not need much room. Just keep them safe inside the house and feed them twice a day. We need your help now. Please, if you can just commit for just a few weeks, go to the shelter and register at the front desk, you can take them home right away. You can email rescue@broward.org with questions. Or lastly, you can call 954-359-1313 and ask for rescue.

Who are you in your relationship?
n
We’ve all heard the phrase that relationships are hard work. We often confuse this phrase with meaning that the hard work references resolving arguments and disagreements. Yes, that is part of finding the compromise in a relationship, but that’s not the true meaning of hard work that is referenced. Often we don’t realize that our bachelor version of self is causing extreme discord and strife in our relationship. I’ve worked BY with many JAMES couples who MILLER struggle with finding common ground in relationships. They often complain about matters that are not pertinent to their relationship. I typically ask them to describe their bachelor version of self in comparison to their relationship version of self. Often, they struggle with this because they have not fully transitioned into their relationship version of self. The mindset, behaviors, and accountability factors of your bachelor self will not survive in a healthy relationship. Often, you will find that many of your relationship strug-
gles are due to one of you reverting to the bachelor self and not realizing this will doom your relationship. Have you ever seen people play with a beach ball? The goal is to keep the ball afloat and not let it touch the ground. Think of your relationship like a beach ball. Everything you do, in your relationship version of self, must be to keep the ball afloat. When you are in your bachelor version of self, you only engage in selfserving behaviors. The minute you revert to that version of self, you will quickly drop the ball and turmoil and discord will quickly ensue. Every thought, behavior, and spoken word that transpires in your relationship should always be filtered through the simple question of, “is this going to help or hinder my relationship?” If there is any possibility that it will hinder your relationship (or drop the beach ball) then don’t do it. When you are vigilant that a simple comment could hinder your relationship, you avoid unnecessary hurts or arguments. Just because you have a thought doesn’t mean you should share it. I would challenge you to create a list of your bachelor and relationship versions of self. What were the attributes, behaviors,
schedules, and overall lifestyle you lived when you were single? Compare that with your version of self in your relationship. Are they similar? If they are similar, then notice when you have struggles in your relationship. Do the struggles happen when you are in your bachelor mode? I can guarantee that you are reverting back to your previous version of self and that is one reason you are experiencing discord.
