o World-class dance music DJ and performer
Kidd Madonny says he has no complaints flying across the globe to attend gigs. “I don’t mind traveling,” the boyish Miami-born-and-bred entertainer tells me as he readies for another takeoff-and-landing—this time for a party in L.A. in two days. “It’s like having a family of fans in every city,” he adds, unselfconsciously. “It makes me work that much harder to do a better show for them.” His professional travels have taken him to the four corners of the globe: from Tokyo, to Acapulco, to Montreal, and beyond. Still, the Kendall-native is always happy to share his gifts and his energy with the folks at home in South Florida, from Wilton Manors to South Beach. In just a few short weeks—from March 4-9—SoBe will host thousands of visiting partygoers who will come to attend the 21st annual Winter Party Festival, the iconic six-day celebration hosted for, by, and about the LGBT community, courtesy of the National LGBTQ Task Force. Among the many exhibitions, musical events, and parties that will highlight Winter Party Festival is one that isn’t even on the official program: GENESIS. The event, produced by electronic dance music DJ, producer, remixer, and entertainer Tracy Young, has become an international must-attend party for dance music lovers. It will take place Saturday, March 7, starting at 8 a.m., and be held in the 27,000-square-foot dance club STORY, at 136 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach. This year, GENESIS will feature the Official Release Party for Madonna’s new album, “Rebel Heart” (featuring the pop star’s current hit single, “Living for Love”), which hits stores on March 10. Along with Young, the event will feature music by DJ Chris Cox, and local favorite son Madonny. “This is the first time we’re doing the event at STORY,” Madonny explains, just back from the gym. “It used to be Amnesia, which has a long history with the gay community, hosting T-Dances, drag shows, and lots of musical events through the years,” he says. “STORY is known internationally for its major sound and lighting. Every famous DJ in the world plays there. “Along with GENESIS, which we expect to be huge and well-received, we are stoked about Madonna’s release party,” Madonny notes. “We are expecting a lot of people from the record label, and the Queen herself might make an appearance,” he adds with a smile. His transformation journey from a local kid who enjoyed music to internationally-famous performer Kidd Madonny began when he was still in school.

COVER FEATURE “I always loved music. I was a band nerd,” he admits with a laugh. “I played saxophone in junior high.” Clearly, he had the music in him, also. “I always really enjoyed performance art—the way it is done by professionals,” he explains. “I loved dancing with music. You’ve seen Madonna and other performers dance. When I was 17, I got my first job, which was dancing at Prince’s club in South Beach, Glam Slam. “Everybody who worked for Prince had to have a stage name. So I chose ‘Kidd’ to be mine. Now, Prince had played a character named ‘Kid’ in the film Purple Rain. He said, ‘you can’t be called just ‘Kidd’—so I told him, ‘call me Kidd Madonny’. ‘Why— do you love Madonna?’ I told him, yeah— her poster is hanging over my bed. I’ve been Kidd Madonny ever since.” Glam Slam closed in 1996 [its space is now occupied by Club Mansion], but Kidd’s career was just starting. “My partner and I were club kids,” he explains. “We loved going to clubs and dancing, and after Glam Slam closed, we were hired to perform at every circuit party. We performed at Palladium, at Twilo, which hosted dozens of legendary DJs from around the world, and was important in popularizing in the U.S. the international styles of house and trance music.” While dancing, Madonny worked alongside other entertainers whose skills would serve him well. “We literally got to work with the world’s best DJs,” he recalls, “and from those years working alongside so many of them, I learned how to play music. “In those days, it was all vinyl,” he adds. “In 2001, when Twilo in New York was getting ready to close, I told the manager I wanted to learn how to play music, so he gave me his turntable to take home. I practiced every day for years—literally. And this was at a time when there were no computers to help you mix vinyl and CDs. “To start, I did small gigs. Gary Santis booked me into my first job at the Coliseum, in Fort Lauderdale,” he remembers. “It was 10 years ago this month—in February 2005, opening for Victor Calderone. I

“THERE’S A CERTAIN MUSIC FOR EVERY VENUE, EVERY ROOM. THIS IS THE GENIUS OF THE BEST DJS AND PERFORMERS— SENDING WHAT WORKS AT A GIVEN GIG.” was a nervous wreck. I knew Victor from my dancing days as a go-go boy. He said to me, ‘I didn’t know you DJ’ed. You’re doing really well.’ It was a great feeling to hear that from someone I respect. “In ’07, I was hired to play Click at Dek23 on South Beach. I loved that gig, because it was where I had danced as a club kid. I went full circle. It’s great in life when you get a chance to do the same things differently and better the second time.” Madonny is grateful to all of his musical influences, past and present, for helping him to mold the sound which has brought him into such high demand. “Junior Vasquez, Peter Rauhofer, DJ Abel, Victor Calderone—they have all been so inspiring through the years. It has been a privilege to learn from their styles, and to take a piece of each of them from what I have seen and experienced.” He also credits electronic dance music super-group Swedish House Mafia as inspiration “for playing epic rooms.” Notes Madonny: “There’s a certain music for every venue, every room. This is the genius of the best DJs and performers— sending what works at a given gig. You can always learn to be better.” He certainly isn’t afraid to try new things, even when that means you risk failing the first few times. “That doesn’t scare me one bit,” the Kidd offers. “Trial-and-error is the best teacher.” theguymag

LOVING THE LIFE AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MELISSA MANCHESTER

It’s been almost 40 (!) years since Melissa Manchester’s massive chart-topper “Midnight Blue” made her a household name and launched a string of hit singles, including “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” “Through The Eyes of Love” and “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.” Not only has Manchester released more than a dozen studio albums, she has also written hit songs for others, such as “Come In From The Rain.” One of the original members of Bette Midler’s Harlettes, Manchester has also acted on stage and screen. Her latest independently released album You Gotta Love The Life (Long Run Entertainment) finds the singer/songwriter touching on various musical styles and collaborating with a stellar roster of guest artists. I spoke with Melissa in early 2015.
o
Gregg Shapiro: Melissa, what was involved in the process of selecting songs, both originals and covers, for your new album You Gotta Love The Life? Melissa Manchester: The covers we’ve been working on onstage for a while. That’s where I work on the shape and arrangements of songs, these songs and ones I’m reinterpreting. In terms of the original songs; those came from a variety of emotional sources. I had been going through dramatic changes in the last couple of years. The songs “The Other One” and “No There There” are about that. My friends Steve and Bill were finally allowed to marry and I wrote “You Are My Heart” in tribute to their marriage after so many years of being together. Original songs come from very many different places.
[MELISSA MANCHESTER PERFORMS ON MARCH 3 AND 4 AT JAZZIZ, 201 PLAZA REAL IN BOCA RATON.]
GS: There are some interesting and distinctive influences on the album, including the blues on “Feelin’ For You” and Latin on your covers of “Claudia” and the “Let’s Face The Music And Dance/From This Moment On” medley. MM: Thank you for noticing that. The truth is that I have a wide variety of musical interests. There’s a wide variety of styles of music that appeal to me. Historically, record companies really don’t want you [laughs] to have a wide variety. It helps them to categorize you and sell you down one path. I always found that nutty and restrictive. To my knowledge, nobody’s been carted away in an ambulance listening to the variety of music that I like to listen to and perform [laughs]. Now that I’m an independent artist and I have the platform to share my musical interests, it showed up that way. GS: Speaking of covers, were you aware that you and your old compatriot, Bette Midler, would both be covering “Be My Baby” on your new albums? MM: I had no idea! The thing is that the song is brilliant. True to historical form, brilliant songs should be covered by many artists. It was the 50th anniversary of “Be My Baby” and it seemed appropriate. Again, it was another song that I’d been working on onstage for awhile. GS: You have a wonderful array of guest artists on the album, including Al Jarreau on “Big Light,” Dionne Warwick and Joe Sample on “Other End of the Phone,” Keb’ Mo’ on “Feelin’ For You,” Stevie Wonder on “Your Love Is Where I Live” and Dave Koz on “Claudia.” What does it mean to you to be able to collaborate with these folks? MM: It was a great honor that they said yes [laughs]. I have history with all of these artists. It was beautiful to acknowledge their contributions to the musical lexicon. I was very honored by them wanting to join me on this journey. GS: “Other End of the Phone” was cowritten with the late Hal David. How did this collaboration come about? MM: I was actually at a New Year’s Eve party

INTERVIEW and Hal was sitting right next to me. One thing led to another and I asked him if he still wrote and he said yes. (Then) I went to visit him at his beautiful apartment. I asked him about his songwriting process and he asked about mine. I told him how songs often come out of conversations or somebody shows up with an idea. I asked, “Do you have an idea?” He shuffled out of the room, because he was quite elderly at the time, and he brought back three sheets of paper. “Other End of the Phone” was the completed lyric. The other two were partially completed. When I read “Other End of the Phone,” I started to hear the music. I channeled Dionne’s (Warwick) voice singing it. When I appealed to her and invited her to be part of this, I said, “You built your entire career on the words of Hal David and the music of Burt Bacharach.” The topping on that particular ice cream sundae is that Joe Sample played piano. I’d been trying to work with Joe for more than 30 years, but he’s a busy guy. GS: You also collaborated with comedian and actor Paul Reiser, with whom you co-wrote the previously mentioned “No There There.” How did that collaboration come to be? MM: I didn’t know that Paul’s a musician. I went to a concert and it turned out that he had co-written several of the lovely songs that the artist was doing. He was there and I asked him if he would like to write (with me) and he said, “Sure.” I went to his home and we knocked it out. GS: You mentioned “You Are My Heart” earlier. According to the liner notes, the same-sex wedding song, “You Are My Heart,” was “written in honor of the marriage of Steve Kelley and Bill Hellmers,” who got married on Aug. 24, 2013. How
46

did that song come to be? MM: What happened was on, I believe, the morning of June 26 when DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) was finally struck down, Steve and Bill, my best friends who had been together for many years, live in New York and I live in California. That morning, I texted Steve and asked, “Do I hear wedding bells?” He texted me back, “We’re thinking of August,” and he signed it “You are my heart.” I looked at that phrase and thought, “That’s the song.” GS: Did you get to attend the wedding? MM: I sang it (the song) at the wedding [laughs]! GS: Did you ever imagine that you would be attending legally sanctioned same-sex weddings, let alone writing a same-sex wedding song? MM: Incredible, isn’t it? It’s beautiful! GS: What would it mean to you have the song become a same-sex wedding staple? MM: It’s interesting because, one of these days, God willing, it’ll just be a wedding staple [laughs]. Historically, this is such a vibrant moment of evolution. It’s thrilling. I hope it’s performed at many weddings for same-sex couples. I hope people see it as a dream come true and that the song helps to honor people’s walk towards a promise fulfilled. GS: Beautifully put, Melissa. You are about to embark on a multi-city concert tour. Will your show mainly be focused on the new record or will it include a mix of songs from your career? MM: It is a mix of songs from my career, to be sure. But, yes, there will be lots of selections from the album. What I do after the concerts are finished is come into the lobby and sign things and shake hands and listen to people and give hugs. It’s part of my joy. theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK
Ricky Vono
Mr. Health at Boardwalk by Jameer
baptiste
o Boardwalk Bar in Fort Lauderdale has its own resident health expert. Every aspect of Ricky Vono’s life exudes his passion for health and fitness. The outgoing 28 year-old doesn’t just diet or exercise occasionally, he lives a healthy lifestyle that encompasses eating well and working out 6 days a week. But he wasn’t always a fit, outgoing gentleman. Ricky’s family moved to South Florida from his birthplace of Providence, Rhode Island when he was a young eight year old. During those early years, Vono recalls being a scrawny little boy, which ultimately caused him to be shy and timid. However, as he grew older, his motivation to beat the odds against his family history of health issues led him to start working out and eating right. In doing so, he accomplished a complete 180-degree turn from when he was a youngster. His physique changed from that skinny, boyish frame to the athletic muscle-build he has today. But he doesn’t just take care of his body with nutrition and a hard-core gym regimen. He also fuels his mind as a student while still focusing on his passion for everything healthy. Ricky is currently in school studying exercise science and nutrition. Gaining confidence, he was able to leave his shy-boy persona behind. “I can talk to a brick in the wall,” Ricky said. In 2008, his extroverted personali-
ty helped him out when he decided to make a change in location from the fast pace of Fort Lauderdale to the sleepiness of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He quickly made a name for himself and started working as a personal training manager as well as a volunteer firefighter. But yearning to be near his family and

a desire to abandon the cold, he moved back to Florida in 2012. Since then, he has been working towards his lifelong goal of opening a personal training studio. And most recently, he reestablished another shorter-term goal: To compete in a physique competition by the end of this year.

confusion about his feelings for Marc. However, a victory at an important track meet is just the thing Sieger needs to face his demons. The minimal DVD bonus features include the original trailer for the film.
o
In Dutch with English subtitles, Boys (Wolfe), aka Jungens, is an insightful exploration of the first blush of young gay love. Teen track team mates Sieger (Gijs Blom) and Marc (Ko Zandvliet) have an immediate attraction as they train for a relay meet with fellow runners Step (Stijn Taverne) and Tom (Myron Wouts). A visit to a swimming hole cements things when the two kiss. Of course, Sieger tells Marc he’s not gay, in spite of not hesitating to kiss Marc back. The boys’ home lives couldn’t be more different. Sieger and his older brother Eddy (Jonas Smulders), a former track star turned motorcycle-riding hoodlum, live with their widowed father. Eddy insists on riding a motorcycle, even though his father disapproves since the boys’ mother was killed in, you guessed it, a motorcycle accident. Marc, on the other hand, is an adoring older brother to his kid sister, and has a good relationship with his folks. As Sieger and Marc’s relationship develops, and they can barely keep their hands off of each other, complications arise. Crazy Bitches (Film McQueen) is a twisted slasher comedy with an unexpected ending twist from director/actress Jane Clark (Meth Head). Sorority sisters prissy and pearled Taylor (Samantha Colburn), predatory lesbian Cassie (Cathy DeBuono), smug and smart Princess (Mary Jane Wells), terminally ill Dorri (Nayo Wallace), cheated-on Alice (Victoria Profeta), woo-woo woozy Minnie (Liz McGeever), gay guy pal BJ (Andy Gala) and Alice’s nasty sister Belinda, gather for a weekend at the Benton Estate, site of a grisly murder a few years earlier and said to be haunted by the souls of the seven girls killed there. Combining elements of revenge killing for past hurts, ghost stories, as well as references to classic horror, and a healthy dose of pansexual humping, Crazy Bitches gets most of it right. It keeps us guessing as each of the characters begins dropping in ways specific to their personality. Fashion obsessed Belinda gets a stiletto heel to the eye, Taylor chokes on her pearls, hair hung-up Princess is scalped, skin color conscious BJ discovers too late that there is acid in one of his cream tubes, and so on. Be sure to pay close attention to the substory involving Alice’s philandering husband

Eddie (David Fumero). Crazy Bitches refreshes a genre that was getting tired and tiresome. [Available on VOD and across all other digital platforms, in February.]
o
Recently out actor Ben Wishaw plays Richard, widower of Kai (Andrew Leung), in queer writer/director Hong Khaou’s featurelength debut Lilting (Strand). Together four years, Richard loses his boyfriend when Kai is struck by a car on the way to catch a bus to visit his stubborn and unassimilated mother Junn (Pei pei Cheng) in the sheltered home where she resides in London. A complex portrait of difficult relationships on par with Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange, Lilting depicts the challenges, linguistic and cultural, that arise when loss clouds everyone’s perspective. Both Richard and Junn are struggling in their own ways, which are more similar than they realize. Jealous of her son’s relationship with Richard, the level of which she supposedly doesn’t fully grasp, Junn, who doesn’t speak English, is miserable in her living situation. This is the case, despite of being the object of felshare with us on guymag.net
low resident Alan’s (Peter Bowles) affection. In the meantime, Richard is coming to terms with living alone in the home that he shared with Kai. Making an effort to reach out to Junn, he visits her, even going so far as to hire a translator, Vann (Naomi Christie), to help with the language barrier. But it is what is unspoken – Richard’s relationship with Kai – that is the greatest obstacle. Unbeknownst to each other, it is their memories of Kai, seen in flashback, that truly bind Richard and Junn. The performances in Lilting are simply awe-inspiring. The writing, while definitely on the tearjerker level, also makes subtle use of humor, giving the characters and the audience the chance to occasionally catch their breath. DVD bonus features include an interview with director Khaou, as well as Khaou’s short film “Summer,” and more. Also out there: Cheyenne Jackson plays a gay dance instructor tangoing with widow Gena Rowlands in Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks, a film based on Richard Alfieri’s play of the same name, opening in Fort Lauderdalearea theaters on Feb. 27. theguymag

Is Gonna Get You” are flecked throughout the anthemic title track. Chamuel’s determination in riding the coattails of The Voice is apparent throughout (who can blame her?), but no more than on “Lottery,” with a Kelly Clarkson-worthy hook — ”we’ll find out if it’s meant to be, if we both play the lottery” — that scoops you up in its electro-pop fuzz. Radio, are you listening? Grade: B

FIFTH HARMONY, REFLECTION o Raise your glass to girl-group power. It’s returning thanks to music-maven Simon Cowell, who understands the need to resurrect this abandoned, gay-celebrated American tradition, where female voices unite for the purposes of empowerment and man-sassing. Fifth Harmony fills a sad void left by TLC, En Vogue, Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child, and the quintet’s long-anticipated debut, Reflection, is both a modern-day creation of irresistible girl-group frivolity and a hat-tip to their ’90s foremothers. Nowhere is this more obvious than on the cheery drum-dropping dance number “Brave Honest Beautiful,” which launches with a “they ain’t ready for this” roll-call a la “Bootylicious” and then, to reinforce their strong-women-rule mantra, names off Madonna, Shakira and Beyoncé. “Like Mariah” goes as far as to sample the chanteuse herself, looping her “do do doop dums” from “Always Be My Baby” into an infectious throwback that’s cuter than kittens. On “Worth It,” the ladies lead a parade of handclaps, horns and self-love swagger, and

then there’s “This Is How We Roll,” which is Fifth Harmony in a nutshell. “This place is jumpin’ / we keep it bumpin’,” they say. And yeah, even if it’s a formula that’ll only take them so far, it’s true: They sure as hell know how to throw a party. Grade: B+Michell MICHELLE CHAMUEL, FACE THE FIRE o Even before The Voice, where she took second place during the fourth season, Michelle Chamuel had a knack for pop melodies as lead singer of Michigan-based Ella Riot (previously My Dear Disco). Additional clout never hurts, but on the perpetually peppy Face the Fire, it’s a hit Chamuel is after. And even if some of the material, co-written by Ella Riot bandmates Tyler Duncan and Theo Katzman, is slight, the adorkable ditty-maker has enough surefire singles to earn her some airplay: glitchy synths pop and sizzle on “Made for Me,” delivering the lovestruck sentimentality and cinematic cuteness of a Sara Bareilles song; “Weight of the World” is a dreamy number set to evocative keyboards and gentle bass; and traces of Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm

KATE PIERSON, GUITARS AND MICROPHONES o Even after almost 40 years, B-52s co-founder Kate Pierson is still loading up the love shack. On “Pulls You Under,” the last track from her first solo album — a long time coming, she’s said — Pierson wraps the wounded in an ascending wallop of live instruments and her own “rainbow voice.” The song sits among a sometimes-delightfully quirky (and definitely not-for-everyone) set executive produced by Sia, who also made songwriting contributions. “Throw Down the Roses” is a riotous chant, and many others charm too. “Mister Sister,” however, misses the mark--it’s too simplistic to be a trans anthem, as it’s being called. And the music itself? Well, at least it’s not terrible. NIGHT TERRORS OF 1927, EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES o A pop-rock weepie reminiscent of The Cure and featuring Tegan and Sara, the terrific single “When You Were Mine” promised big things to come for L.A. alt duo Night Terrors of 1927. Now that it’s out, however, the band’s debut never quite meets that potential. Its major flub? How dated it sounds. Despite occasional sparks of ingenuity, especially the choir-accompanied “Perfect Day,” Everything’s Coming Up Roses sticks to the most basic tropes of 2000-era rock. So thanks anyway, “Always Be One,” but The Killers beat you to the punch. Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. o Inn Leather has been a stable in Fort Lauderdale since 1999. The Guest House and Resort caters to the gay leather and Levis community. The resort is one in which you can let your inhibitions go and enjoy yourself in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The whole facility is clothing optional. There’s a cruisy backroom and a fully functional outdoor sling. Actually, you can find a sling in every guest room. There are two types of rooms: studios and suites. The studio is a regular hotel-style room that comes equipped with the customary amenities like an alarm radio, flat screen TV and DVD player. There’s also an added bonus that comes standard in each studio: a mini-size kitchenette that includes a toaster, coffee maker, microwave and a mini-frig with six complimentary beverages. The suite is a large, onebedroom apartment and includes all the amenities of the studio with an additional flat screen TV and a complete kitchen with a full-size refrigerator and stove. Guests receive parking, a continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi. The resort is pet-friendly and the entire facility is gated off from the public with 24-hour security surveillance. On the grounds, guests can enjoy a heated pool, soak in the jacuzzi and relax on the sundeck. There’s also the opportunity to meet and mingle with locals in the area as they stop in routinely with a daytime pass. Locals and non-guests are able to enjoy the resort’s amenities everyday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Since General Manager Milan Gamiani took over, the resort has thrown monthly parties to coincide with observed holidays. In March, for example, a party is planned on the 15th at 12:00 p.m. to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Leather Pride. But these monthly parties also serve a higher purpose other than just their entertainment value. Along with private contributions from the owner, these parties have helped to raise over $200,000 that the resort has donated to different charities: Poverello, local fire departments, Leather Archive and theguymag

Sheila’s Conch & Wings by Tim

o
A little taste of the Bahamas right here in Fort Lauderdale! Just a stone’s throw from Fort Lauderdale Beach sits Sheila’s Conch & Wings. Sheila is a quaint restaurant that is EXTREEEEEEMLY laid back. Just like the Bahamas, don’t go there in a hurry. There is no need to dress up. The restaurant boasts a “relaxed, casual dining atmosphere.” The staff is extremely warm and polite making sure you have a nice dining experience. Give yourself the full hour for lunch or more for dinner. Sheila’s is located just east of Bayview and Commercial on the south side of the road. While there is plenty of parking, there are meters so please bring change. The restaurant itself is adequate in its layout and serves beer and wine. The music is a steady flow of reggae Bob Marleyesque rhythm. There is also live music at night. The menu is a conch lover’s dream come true! There is conch salad ($9), fritters ($5) and various cracked conch plates ($13 - $25). In addition to the multiple conch dishes there are burgers, wings, shrimp and fried fish meals. Upon arriving, we were greeted by none other than Sheila herself. She was formally located in West Palm Beach, but relocated to Fort Lauderdale and has been here for about a year. We sat down and immedi($8.99). I order the lunch portion ately ordered a Conch Fritter ApCrack Conch and Shrimp with SHEILA’S CONCH petizer ($4.99)—six large fritters Fries ($10.99). Hollywood. 33314.
Richard Lewis and Kevin Pollack o If observational humor isn’t quite your thing, about twenty minutes east of Jerry Seinfeld both Richard Lewis and Kevin Pollack will be dishing out their dark, neurotic stand-up. Lewis has been a major player in the stand-up world, respected by both his peers and the critical community. Using his history in therapy and his twisted view of the world, Lewis uses self-deprecating jokes with a sick bent. Pollack has had a successful film career in, ironically, dramatic roles. He was a supporting player in movies A Few Good Men, Casino, and The Usual Suspects. Still, his home is on the stage, where he has perfected his Capt. Kirk impression. Tonight’s show helps fundraise the Catskill Resort Museum. 8:00 p.m. Parker Playhouse. NE Eighth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

TRAVEL
BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
Gay-Friendly Caribbean Voyage
o
We are continuously bombarded with headlines and news reports of homophobia in the Caribbean. But the Caribbean isn’t all homophobic and unsupportive. There are actually several gorgeous tropical paradise islands where we can relax and feel safe while vacationing. Plus, these islands are close--only spanning short travel distances from South Florida, so why not share the good travel news for a change?
Puerto Rico is a beautiful tropical island that experiences warm weather yearround and has been a popular gay destination since the early 70s. Although it has yet to fully accept the LGBT community socially due to its strong religious influences, its United States Commonwealth status does help with protecting our legal rights on the island. Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, is extremely welcoming to the LGBT community. In the upscale neighborhood of Condado, you can not only find the gay beach of the city, but also gay and gay-friendly hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs as well. This oceanfront neighborhood is a combination between Rodeo Drive, California and Ocean Drive, South Beach. There are high-end luxury boutiques like Chanel and Louis Vuitton and a vibrant nightlife. The US Virgin Islands are located only 40 miles east of Puerto Rico. The islands are white sand paradises with a tropical savannah climate year round. The unique allure of the US Virgin Islands when it comes to the LGBT community is its multiple gayfriendly destinations. 3 of the 4 main islands appeal to the gay community in one fashion or the other, depending on what vacation vibe you are looking for: Saint Thomas Island is a sandy beach oasis with bright color houses that line the streets and ascend up the hillsides of the 70

island. It’s the US Virgin Island’s most developed, urban area with multiple shops and restaurants. The island was known to have the Virgin’s most robust gay scene; however, in recent years the gay nightlife has vanished. Nonetheless, the gay-friendly atmosphere still exists and many believe the reason for the change stems from the island’s overwhelming acceptance, which allows gay and straight people to enjoy the same venues without a need for distinction.
Saint John Island is much smaller
in population and development than that of Saint Thomas Island. However, Cruz Bay, the largest town on the island, still offers great shops, art galleries, and dining options. The waters are a clear blue and 60 percent of the island is a national park, which makes it an ideal spot for the active traveler. There is no distinct gay scene on the island but they do offer commitment ceremonies and welcome the gay community with open-arms.
Saint Croix Island is the biggest of the 3 gay-friendly Virgin Islands. It is less busy than Saint Thomas yet more developed than Saint John. Travelers like to visit two major towns of this green pastures and crystalclear water destination--Christiansted and Frederiksted. Both are distinct in character with Frederiksted being more laid-back with the island’s most popular beach, Dorsch Beach. And Christiansted is said to have the eye-catching views and sights. Saint Croix is also the most gay-oriented of the three islands. They have a gay hotel, gay-friendly clubs and a gay business guild. Saint theguymag

Croix is the US Virgin Island that you are most likely to come across other gay travelers.
Curacao is the only Caribbean island to
publicly embrace the gay community. There isn’t any particular gay scene on the island but their “live and let-live” philosophy makes enjoying the island carefree and easy. This Caribbean paradise has it own Gay Curacao website that lists an array of gay-friendly hotels and nightlife venues. They also produce an annual Gay Pride event in September. “It is important to us that it’s known to the gay & lesbian community that everyone is welcome in Curacao,” Executive Director of the Curacao Tourist Board.
Saint Martin/Sint Maarten
is the Caribbean’s smallest island that houses two different countries. St. Martin is the French northern part of the island and St. Maarten is the Dutch southern part of the island. Nonetheless, tourist can move freely between both parts and each country is known to be welcoming and gay-friendly. And although there are no distinct gay scenes on either side, there’s one gay club in St. Martin called Club Eros. In addition, there are three clothing optional beaches that are favored by gay travelers: Cupecoy Beach on the Dutch side and Baie Rouge share with us on guymag.net
and Baie Oriental on the French side.
Saint Barthelemy, also known as St. Barts and St. Barths, is the most exclusive of the Caribbean Islands. The French destination is the Caribbean travel hub for the rich and famous with A-list celebrities frequently vacationing on the island. As a predominantly liberal and secular vacation spot, St. Barts has also been a high sought out luxurious travel destination for the gay power-elite. There are no specified gay clubs and hotels but there are openly gay business owners and staff. St. Barts appeal is centered on its easy-going, laissezfaire vibe in which everyone is respectful and respected. Both communities gay and straight comingle with no animosity or discomfort. Saba holds the rank as the most unique
Caribbean destination in both landscape and gay-friendly attributes. Unlike most all of the Caribbean islands, Saba has no major cruiseship visits and only has one actual beach at Well’s Bay. Most vacationers come to the island for its world-class outdoor activities like snorkeling and hiking. There aren’t any gay bars and hotels on the Dutch inhabitant but the super tiny island is the only Caribbean destination that has legalized Marriage Equality, which has put the town on the map as one of the gay-friendliest Caribbean islands.

teenagers, on their own and going nowhere, take part in the invention of hip-hop and street art. In turn, they become a part of the larger cultural fabric that saw disco give way to punk rock, as a vibrant cross-pollination takes hold at the dawn of the ’80s. We don’t know anything about casting yet, but it’s safe to say we’ll see a lot of fresh young up-and-comers – if only to counteract the production costs this visionary creator likes to run up in the name of making everything look really cool. THE YOUNG DAN SAVAGE CHRONICLES
o
From alternative weekly sex columnist to This American Life fixture to news pundit to creator of the “It Gets Better” project, Dan Savage’s career path has been idiosyncratic and totally independent, the picture of not being co-opted by large, powerful corporations. Except now he has a sitcom at ABC. OK, a sitcom pilot, but still, if it goes to series and is successful, you’ll be hearing a whole lot more from Dan Savage outside of his appearances on Real Time with Bill Maher, thanks to all that ABC marketing muscle. The project has no title just yet, but it’s based on Savage’s own childhood, and it revolves around a little gay boy who comes out and turns his formerly “picture perfect” suburban family upside down. Another thing to think about if this goes to series: It will be the first time a gay kid has been the main character on an American sitcom. So let’s root for that.
Romeo San Vicente’s “It Gets Better” video was rated NC-17 and banned from YouTube. He can be reached care of this publication or at DeepInsideHollywood@ qsyndicate.com. guymagtube

o Embroidery World Fort Lauderdale is a convenient and gay-friendly neighborhood store offering customers different embroidery, screening, printing and branding services. Located on Oakland Park Boulevard just minutes from Wilton Manors, Embroidery World Fort Lauderdale provides a showroom, which is uncommon for most embroidery outlets. You can actually view and feel the items they have to offer and speak to the staff face-to-face to ensure you receive the customized product you envisioned. Plus, everything is done in-house with state of the art

equipment, which provides speedy completion without the standard wait time. There’s nothing that Embroidery World Fort Lauderdale cannot provide. They do it all: removable tattoos, water bottles, beach balls, shirts and hats. The list goes on. They even have the capability to personalize individual items on-site as you wait. Last October, they ran a special promotion in observance of Breast Cancer Month in which they affixed the ubiquitous Pink Ribbon symbol on personal items for free. They also have an in-store graphic designer who is available to turn your creative imagination into any reality to fit your needs and budget.

FITNESS
Slim Down and Shape Up in Time for Spring! by Tom
bonanTi
o
You’ve got to love this South Florida weather! While most of the country is still shoveling snow and wearing mittens and mufflers, we are hitting the beach and shopping for new swim suits and cruise wear. Yet we have our own issues, especially if we’re still carrying around some of that excess winter weight picked up over the holidays. Whether you need to lose 5lbs. or 50lbs. the time is now to start a healthy and successful weight loss program. Sadly, too few people accomplish this task. Most lose a few pounds for awhile, but eventually gain them back and then some. Whether you want to lose weight to improve your health or simply want to fit into a smaller, skimpier swimsuit, here are some major pointers that will insure your success this spring. Remember to check with your physician before beginning a weight loss program of more than 10lbs. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper. Your body needs calories early in the day when you’re busy and active, not at night when you’re ready to crash. Never go to bed on a full stomach – it’s disastrous for your sleep and your waistline. And by a royal breakfast, I don’t mean donuts, muffins or last night’s leftover pizza. Remember to eat low glycemic index carbs like whole grains and fresh fruits for energy, and plenty of protein to feed your muscles. Steel cut oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, and lean chicken breasts are all great suggestions for breakfast. Pastas, salads and veggies are great for lunch. For supper stick to a high protein, low carb formula. Try interval training. This is a wonderful and simple blend of aerobic and anaerobic work. The way I like to do it is to perform a couple of sets of light to moderate squats — anaerobic strength training — then take a brisk run around the block outside the gym — aerobic training. I follow this with sets of push-ups and then perform several sets of

walking lunges around the parking lot. Interval training allows you to be creative and spontaneous. It is a more efficient way to burn fat and it should take you no more than 30 to 45 minutes. Drink plenty of water. Water helps you feel full, and is good for flushing out your system. Fruit drinks, soft drinks, and coffee don’t count as eight glasses of water a day. Sports drinks, like soda, are loaded with extra sugar and sweeteners you don’t need unless you’re running a marathon. There’s no substitute for good, clean water. Divert yourself when you crave bad foods — like when you’re stressed, depressed, pissedoff or all of the above. Get out of the house and take a walk. Have sex. Get a massage. Go on Grindr. Do anything that’ll take your mind off of junk food and needless binge eating. Finally, reduce lifestyle barriers that make weight-loss impossible. Thank about your lifestyle and how your behaviors and choices help or hinder you. Do you pack a nutritious lunch and healthy snacks to take to work instead of eating from a vending machine? Do you say “yes” too often to a mean-ass boss who you’ll never please anyway? Do you need to dump that unemployed, self-entitled diva you call a boyfriend? It’s your body and your life. Springtime is a great time to shatter old habits and start new, healthy wonderful ones! Contact trainertomb@aol.com with all of your fitness questions.
