From the hot topics to the hot messes and everything in between, here's what you may have missed last week. BY DIEGO WYATT

SCHOCK TREATMENT After resigning amid ongoing accusations of financial wrongdoings, former Republican Congressman Aaron Schock made his grand return to Twitter. Although Schock tweeted about his former offices, which were famously painted to resemble Downton Abbey, he was trolled incessantly by individuals urging him to come out already. STRAIGHT-ISH TALK According to a new survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of selfidentified heterosexual men having sex with gay men is on the rise. BATTLE OF THE BULGE Matthew Lewis, best known for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series, became an overnight sex symbol after posing for Attitude in 2015. “Even if one day I end up looking like f*cking Chris Hemsworth, I’m never going to not be self-conscious,” he said in an interview with the Evening Standard.

ele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Justin Harris and Louise Bartle are English indie rock outfit Bloc Party. Led by openly gay rhythm guitarist Okereke, the original band was formed in 1999. In 2003, the quartet made a splash with their distinctive moniker. The band stumbled into a wall of criti-

cal acclaim, after their 2005 debut Silent Alarm put their signature guitar-heavy brand of electro-rock on the map. The hybrid sonic architecture forged by the foursome has been compared to The Chemical Brothers meets The Smiths meets Sonic Youth. Make no mistake: Bloc Party is in a league of their own. The band’s sound has evolved over time in a way that keeps them current without pandering to the masses. In 2015, the band’s longstanding lineup changed and Harris and Bartle were added into the fold. Their fifth studio album, Hymns, propelled by single “The Good News,” is due out January 29, 2016.

Bow Down. Leave it to Queen Bey to upstage Channing Tatum in full-on drag on the most perfect moment in the history of Spike TV's Lip Sync Battle. Performing to her anthemic 2011 hit “Run the World (Girls),” Tatum, who faced off against his wife Jenna Dewan, pulled out all of the stops, even hitting the original choreography. The performance was capped off by Beyoncé joining in and setting the stage on fire within mere seconds. Bow. Down.

Tens Across the Board. The future of vogue looks a lot like a prepubescent Russian boy. Young Leonid Mizrahi took the Internet by storm in a video shared by world-renowned vogue instructor and legendary performer and choreographer in the New York scene, Dashaun Wesley. In the clip, the scene-stealer executed a near perfect performance of the five elements, wowing his crowd of peers and millions of awestruck viewers around the world.

ansexuality, as we know it today, dates back to 1917. A construct credited to Sigmund Freud, pansexuality was used to describe sexual or emotional attraction toward individuals of any sex or gender identity. Not to be confused with bisexuality, the term has recently seen renewed popularity. Pansexual is often viewed as a more inclusive term than bisexual and denotes a rejection of the gender binary that so many in society cling to for dear life.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF TERRY RICHARDSON, IMGUR & FLICKR.

The pansexual resurfaced in mainstream culture as the era of self-identification dawned. More and more people began opening themselves up to romantic experiences that are not traditional and sought a way to be counted. The “gender-blind” proclivities of the pansexual go beyond sex and the Kinsey scale. It is merely another type of

human interaction that comes with its own set of curiosities and skepticism. While the term existed long before any of us were even born, pansexual wasn’t really a thing until pop star Miley Cyrus came out last year. In the September issue of Elle UK, Cyrus revealed that she is openly pansexual and went on to define her sexual fluidity in Paper magazine. "I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn't involve an animal and everyone is of age," she said. “I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl." Does pansexual fit among the wobbly letters that currently form our community’s acronym? Is it a subset of bisexuality that deserves its own space? Is it any different from queer or questioning or fluid? Like most labels, pansexual seems to raise more questions than it answers.

NIGHTLIFE

WOLF BAR IS LEADING THE PACK AS FAR AS NIGHTLIFE ON THE DRIVE GOES. THE LIVELY HOTSPOT TOOK UP RESIDENCE IN WHAT USED TO BE BILL'S FILLING STATION AND HAS BEEN THRILLING PATRONS SINCE OPENING SHOP IN LATE DECEMBER. WOLF BAR IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO LET YOUR HAIR DOWN, RUN FREE AND LISTEN TO THE CALL OF THE WILD. JUST KEEP THE HOWLING TO A MINIMUM.

W

And it’s not as if their parking lot is small like that of most venues found on The Drive. In fact, Wolf Bar shares a spacious parking area with other stores attached to the club. So, parking on a normal basis shouldn’t ever present a problem. As an added bonus, it’s free! The massive line outside the door of eager wolves trying to get in to sniff what lies beyond the doors was just another indication of how successful the new club is going to be. One by one, the burly staff let each hungry wolf into their new pen to fraternize with one another and marvel at the beautifully renovated space. When the Wolf Bar owners purchased the establishment after the previous club, Bill's Filling Station, closed down, they did a complete remodel that pretty much added to the allure of the building's interiors without sacrificing the flow or familiarity of the venue. They have spruced the place up by giving it an open floor plan that makes the venue seem even larger. You can't help but want to paw at the clever, multi-dimensional wall facades. Upon entering the back door, a shaggy black Wolf wall greets you–touch worthy. Enter the front door, walk through the corridor and get a glimpse of the protruding brick Wolf logo extending from the grey brick wall–touch worthy.

olf Bar on Wilton Drive is a success! Anyone who arrived on Saturday, December 26 for their soft opening could have easily mistaken the shindig for an all out, hardcore opening. From the parking lot to the front door, the place was packed.

The atmosphere is just as enticing as the aesthetics. Wolf Bar has no shortage of bears, which has been a common sighting there since Bill's Filling Station said goodbye to The Drive. However, as the eclectic crowd at the soft opening indicated, bears and wolves and their attractors aren’t the only ones frequenting Wilton Manors’ new territory. Gay men from all walks of life were in attendance, drinking and partying shoulder to shoulder. No matter your taste in men or your body build, the atmosphere and music were both fun and entertaining. DJ Andy Fiacco kept the music diverse, blaring all genres that most gay men can’t resist dancing to. Moreover, the adorable pack of bartenders don’t only make a potent drink; they also make you smile with their stellar service and welcoming attitudes. Make sure to stop by Wolf Bar to check it out for yourself. The club is open everyday from 2:00 pm to 2:00 am. If you happen to leave howling at the moon after having such a good time, don't say we didn't warn you. Wolf Bar 2209 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, FL 33305 954-306-2510

KRISTIN CHENOWETH THURSDAY 1/14 AT 8PM

Broward Center for the Performing Arts Kristin Chenoweth holds the odd distinction of being a Republican and a major LGBT activist. Her rise in popularity began with a Tony Award for her portrayal as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown followed by a stint originating the character of Glinda in the musical Wicked—a role that would define the rest of her career. Since then she’s co-starred on such television shows as Pushing Daisies and Glee. Tonight she will perform Broadway show tunes and music from her 2014 album Coming Home. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

DIVA DIARIES FRIDAY 1/15 AT 7:30PM

Broward Center for the Performing Arts It’s the final night on stage for three dramatic and dramatically anxious drag queens and the cat’s coming out of the bag. These divas reveal secrets, engage in catfights, before finally coming together

for the big show. The crowd pleasing musical uses music from the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s while evoking the fabulousness of a drag show with high energy musical numbers. Outrageous costumes and wild wigs complete the show’s dynamism. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN FRIDAY 1/15 AT 7:30PM

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts Gina Gionfriddo’s critically acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize finalist Rapture, Blister, Burn explores the resentment and jealousy that befall two unfulfilled friends. Catherine and Gwen have taken opposite paths in life: Catherine is a career academic while Gwen has stayed at home, building a life with her husband and children. When they meet up again decades later, the question of “what if” takes over both of them. Will they be able to actually “steal” each other’s lives? And if so, what’s to become of Gwen’s husband? 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

ANI DIFRANCO SATURDAY 1/16 AT 8PM

Culture Room Feminist icon Ani DiFranco has been a fixture of college radio for decades. Her wildly political and poetic songwriting focuses on themes of female empowerment, gay visibility, and abortion rights. Her most popular song, “32 Flavors,” ironically compares a Baskin Robbins slogan to a statement of self-empowerment. The song was later covered by Alana Davis, D’Influence, and Elle Varner, and remains a vital part of American independent music history. Opening is Hamell on Trial. 8:00 p.m. Culture Room. 3045 N. Federal Highway. Fort Lauderdale. 33306.

LIFE IN COLOR FESTIVAL SATURDAY 1/16 AT 12PM

Sun Life Stadium Second only to Ultra in terms of major Miami electronic music festivals, Life in Color Festival employs the biggest names in EDM for a day of dancing and partying. The festival’s unique trick is that it throws gallons and gallons of paint on the partici-

pants, turning the venue into vibrant, visually-sumptuous bedlam. The first paint parties started in 2006 on college campuses in Florida but now has turned into a world-travelling tour. This year’s event includes headliners Jack Ü, Steve Aoki, Zeds Dead, Flosstradamus, Big Sean, and Ruby Rose. 12:00 p.m. Sun Life Stadium. 2269 NW 199th St. Miami Gardens. 33056.

KATT WILLIAMS SUNDAY 1/17 AT 8PM

James L. Knight Center For over twelve years, the famously permed comedian has been entertaining America with his witty, animated performances. His breakout role came on MTV’s highly-rated improv show Wild n’ Out, helping land prime gigs in such films as Friday After Next and First Sunday. His most vital role, though, could be as a wacky ex-pimp in Eddie Murphy’s opus Norbit. After having just finished his highly acclaimed Born Again…Again tour, Williams is back with a new standup set titled Conspiracy Theory. 8:00 p.m. James L. Knight Center. 400 SE Second Ave. Miami. 33131.

THE WEEK

HOLOCAUST HEROES: FIERCE FEMALES MONDAY 1/18 AT 9AM

Nathan D. Rosen Museum Gallery Linda Stein’s newest art exhibit focuses on ten unheralded female heroes during the Holocaust. She utilizes tapestries and sculptures to illuminate the contributions these women had to preserving life in the face of great tragedy. The exhibit also includes her “Spoon to Shell” box sculptures, which focuses on how important a single spoon was during that time—having one allowed concentration camp prisoners to avoid being exposed to dangerous contagious diseases like tuberculosis. The exhibit runs until January 29th. 9:00 a.m. Nathan D. Rosen Museum Gallery. 9901 Donna Klein Blvd. Boca Raton. 33428.

MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS TUESDAY 1/19 AT 8PM

Fillmore Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis broke new LGBT ground in the summer of 2012 when their hit song “Same Love” reached both the popular music and the hip hop com-

munity, helping gay rights become more palatable to the masses. Although the lyrics has such questionably homophobic lines as “When I was in 3rd grade/I thought that I was gay/Cause I could draw,” the main message helped change the younger generation’s perspective on LGBT rights. Along with that song, Mackemore and Ryan Lewis have had other hits like “Thrift Shop,” “Can’t Hold Us,” and “White Walls.” 8:00 p.m. Fillmore. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

STEVE TYRELL WEDNESDAY 1/10 AT 8:30PM

Colony Hotel This Grammy-winning singer has had a solid career both singing and producing. At 19, the Texan native moved to New York City and began working with the likes of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Songs like “The Look of Love” and “Alfie” were helped by his ingenious touch. His concerts blend his old work, including music from his albums A New Standard, Back to Bacharach, I’ll Take Romance, and That Lovin’ Feeling, along with jazz standards. 8:30 p.m. Colony Hotel. 155 Hammon Ave. Palm Beach. 33480.

WE'VE ALL TOLD OUR FAIR SHARE OF WHITE LIES, BUT THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FIBBER AND A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR. WE ARE ABOUT TO EMPOWER YOU WITH THE TOOLS TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE. BODY LANGUAGE IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO SPOT DISHONESTY IN THOSE WHO ARE CLOSE TO YOU OR EVEN COMPLETE STRANGERS. HERE, WE OUTLINE JUST HOW ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. BY DIEGO WYATT

1. EYES

When people are lying, it’s textbook for them to break eye contact. More manipulative liars, however, maintain eye contact in an effort to counter the desire to look away. They tend to overcompensate, however, with blink-less staring or unusually rapid blinking.

2. MOUTH

While lying, the autonomic nervous system decreases salivary flow due to stress. This dries out the mucous membranes of the mouth, making it it more difficult for liars to speak clearly. Moreover, liars tend to cover their mouths when they don’t want to deal with an issue or answer a question.

3. HEAD POSITIONING

Liars change their head positions very rapidly and without warning, especially when asked a direct question. Depending on the person, the head may be jerked down, tilted to the side or simply retracted. This may even happen before the end of a question is reached in anticipation of giving a false response.

4. BREATHING

Pay attention to breathing. Liars tend to breathe heavily, which is a reflex. As a result, their shoulders may rise and their voice may become shallow. These are signs that their blood flow is changing, which is altered when a person feels nervous or tense about something.

5. VULNERABLE BODY PARTS

Liars instinctively cover vulnerable body parts, including the chest, abdomen, throat or head. This response may be witnessed during or after a lie. Liars also cover vulnerable body parts when they feel like their lies have been sniffed out or will be uncovered.

6. POSTURE

It’s not uncommon for liars to fidget from nervousness; however, experts note that many liars don’t move at all. Many attribute it to a ‘fight’ response, in which the liar positions themselves to be ready for any potential confrontation. This characteristic stance is rigid and nearly catatonic.

7. FEET

Liars can hide many things, but most can’t control their body’s natural defense against confrontation. One of the key ways to detect a liar, is by looking at their feet. Lying causes undue nervousness and stress, which makes the body want to walk away. As such, liars often shuffle their feet while speaking.

JAMAL LYON EMPIRE JUSSIE SMOLLETT'S FEARLESS CUB Coming of age as a young, gay male of color is difficult enough. Add a multi-million dollar musical dynasty into the mix along with overzealous parents who can never seem to get along and you may start to understand the complexities of Jamal Lyon’s so-called life. Audiences were first introduced to the squeaky clean character, played by actor/ musician Jussie Smollett, on the FOX series in bed with his former flame Michael. He was closeted, but his mother Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) saw a gay goldmine in the making. As he struggled to find himself musically and professionally in the cutthroat music business, the character blossomed into an out and proud gay man. Audiences crumbled beneath the sound of his vulnerable vibrato and rooted for him to find the man of his dreams. Met with more adversity than most could manage (yet still not nearly as much as some experience in the real world), Jamal goes face to face with his father (Terrence Howard) to prove himself. He gains legions of adoring fans along the way and even connect with his father down the line. After the inaugural season, the character becomes a little muddy with an unexpected (unwanted and unnecessary) heterosexual detour. Lapse of judgment aside, Jamal is a refreshing addition to the pantheon of evergrowing gay characters on television. His storyline is reaching a new generation of sexually fluid audiences and making an impact that is sure to outlast the show.

CONNOR WALSH HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER

JACK FALAHEE IS FIERCE. CASE CLOSED. Even a pack of top-notch law students needs a defector. Enter Connor Walsh, the brutally attractive resident gay on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder. The plucky princess, played perfectly by heterosexual actor Jack Falahee, isn’t afraid to sleep with the enemy to get what he wants. That willingness to do whatever it takes makes the renegade rabble-rouser even sexier. As Walsh’s character develops, the audience learns that he is far from just a pretty face with a pole that points North for any cute man in plain sight. Walsh is a bright student that happens to fall for a nerd—an adorable nerd, but a nerd nonetheless. He’s also one hell of friend, covering the tracks of his peers at every turn. Walsh’s transition from brash playboy to brash partner makes keeping up with the near-exhausting storyline worthwhile. It doesn’t hurt that he is ridiculously good looking either.

advances of a sexy stranger and telling his boyfriend all about it.

3. IAN GALLAGHER SHAMELESS CAMERON MONAGHAN IS TROUBLE. The South Side of Chicago is notoriously rough. Somehow, Ian Gallagher has managed to stick it out. The scrappy ginger with a foul mouth, penchant for inappropriate relationships and bipolar disorder is ready to fly off the handle at any moment, unless, of course, he’s the voice of reason. Gallagher’s tumultuous relationship with neighborhood bad boy Mickey (Noel Fisher) adds depth to the fearless character.

DEFINING QUOTE: "I think this might be the end with Mickey. The diagnosis, even if I don't believe it, I'm pretty sure he does." DEFINING MOMENT: Refusing to sit by while

his boyfriend married a Russian hooker and getting into a brutal fist fight as a result.

4. NATE KULINA KINGDOM NICK JONAS FIGHTS HIS URGES. The first season of Kingdom ended with rising prize fighter Nate struggling through his homosexual desires. After being sidelined with an injury, Kulina begins rethinking his purpose in life. Although he packs a punch in the ring, Kulina is very quiet and shy. His secretive life is slowly peeling away and what was once private is coming to the light with each new episode.

DEFINING QUOTE: "If you jerk off in my sheet,

I swear to God I'll kill you."

DEFINING MOMENT: Entering a random

alleyway to have anonymous sex with a complete stranger without even cracking a smile.

5 ELIJAH KRANTZ GIRLS ANDREW RANNELS IS HERE FOR THE BOYS. Formerly Hannah’s college boyfriend, Krantz sauntered out of the closet following their breakup. While dropping he bombshell to Hannah, Krantz also spilled the beans on Hannah’s father, who we later discover is gay, making for small screen gold. He’s the sassy (and slightly trashy) bestie most people dream of having. He’s also a fairly accurate representation of the “Generation Me” gay. Krantz, who started off as a recurring minor character and turned into a protagonist, breathes the perfect bit of testosterone into HBO’s Girls without diluting the formula. He provides comic relief and adds some heart to the series. His character also introduced Marnie to Charlie. Bonus points!

DEFINING QUOTE: "I just realized I got so good at taking selfies, I wasn't feeling challenged anymore. And then I thought, 'What would happen if I turned the camera around?'" DEFINING MOMENT: Outing Hannah's father while outing himself.

SIMON ASHER QUANTICO 6 TATE ELLINGTON GOES UNDER DEEP COVER. ABC thriller Quantico follows recruits at the FBI Academy in Quantico. Storylines are largely flashbacks of recruits centered around one who is believed to have committed a terrorist attack. Recruits, past and present, piece together their fragmented histories and the audience is left to make sense of the puzzle pieces.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHOWTIME, DIRCTTV, HBO, ABC & NETFLIX.

Simon Asher is a former accountant who most believed was Quantico’s first openly gay recruit. The adorable, Jewish hipster seemed harmless enough, at first, hiding behind his glasses and smirk. Asher later revealed to budding love interest Elias (Rick Cosnett) that he only pretended to be gay to get into the Academy. This wasn't the last time that audiences saw how manipulative and calculated Asher could be. Asher’s mysterious storyline leaves plenty of room for a real coming out story next season, despite his unrelenting desire for fellow recruit Nimah (Yasmine Al Massri). Even in flashbacks, the nerd who just so happens to be proficient at firing handguns is hard to figure out. Asher is brilliant and undoubtedly the most devious mastermind of all of the recruits. In flash forwards, we discover that Asher was booted from the Academy and works as an IT Tech. Something tells us his story is just beginning to unravel.

DEFINING QUOTE: " I didn't just see things. I did things. Things that haunt me every single day of my life." DEFINING MOMENT: Confessing to Elias

that not only was he not gay, but that he only pretended to be gay to get into the Academy, undoubtedly driving Elias to jump out of a window.

TITUS ANDROMEDON UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT TITUSS BURGESS...FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. Titus Andromedon is one of the best things to ever happen to Netflix programming and television, in general. The uproarious character oscillates between pointed candor, fantastical daydreaming stupors and ill-timed outbursts. He may play the funny, flamboyant gay best friend, but he steals the show every time he has a scene. Andromedon is a struggling actor with an unnerving obsession with pop culture, muscle-bound men and enough sassy comebacks to make your head spin. While he’s typically the one getting Kimmy (Elie Camper) into trouble, he’s the first attempting to help her out. He’s also her first real link to the modern, outside world. Season 2 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will soon enthrall millions and reports indicate that Andromedon will have his very own love interest this go ‘round. We just hope this doesn’t mean he won’t meddle in Kimmy’s affairs any longer.

DEFINING QUOTE: "I'm pretty, but tough like a diamond. Or beef jerky in a ball gown." DEFINING MOMENT: Directing, producing,

filming and starring in the music video for an impromtu song he aptly titled "Pinot Noir."

Arboleda explains that any salsa dancer who wants to reach a heightened level of dance is inclined to learn both roles as the leader and follower, such that they embody the complete essence of the dance. A Cheapskate's guide to traveling smart BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

TRAVELING CAN BE PRETTY COSTLY, AND, AT TIMES, CAN EVEN REQUIRE YOU TO SAVE A BIT BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT OF TOWN. WHAT IF WE TOLD YOU THAT THERE ARE SOME NIFTY TRAVEL TIPS TO HELP LOWER YOUR TRAVEL COSTS SO YOU CAN ENJOY A GREAT VACATION WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK IN THE PROCESS? HERE ARE SEVEN EFFECTIVE MONEY-SAVING TIPS THAT ARE GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU TRAVELING LIKE A KING ON A REAL-LIFE BUDGET. 64

TRAVEL

1. RIGHT TIME. RIGHT PLACE.

2. HELP IS JUST A CLICK AWAY.

Depending where you go and when you go can make a big difference on how much you spend. Traveling during a destination’s high season can be quite costly. So, if you are not constrained by any particular date, do your research and travel during the off-season when travel arrangements and accommodations are at their lowest.

Technology is the new travel agent. To arrange the best travel options, you can easily access a travel site like Kayak. com or Booking.com to aggregate and compare travel options from multiple companies, which allows you to choose the most affordable or best company that fits within your price range.

INSIDER TIP: Wednesdays and Thursdays are the cheapest days to book a departing flight. Mondays are the cheapest days to book a returning flight. Sunday is generally the best day to check into a hotel.

INSIDER TIP: Travel sites track your search history as you bounce around the Internet and will raise prices accordingly. To avoid hiked up prices, clear your web history between each travel site search.

3. YOUR HOME IS MY HOME TOO. Websites like Airbnb.com offer room rentals and home rentals to travelers that make lodging more affordable in multiple ways. With private rooms and homes, things like Internet and parking are usually free of charge. Moreover, uninterrupted access to a kitchen and washer and dryer make long-term stays convenient and less costly. INSIDER TIP: If you're staying in a hotel or motel, hop onto FourSquare where you can usually find individuals that post their Wi-Fi passwords.

65

TRAVEL

4. FOR THE LOVE OF "CARS"

5. THE FRIENDLY SKIES.

Today, there are many other forms of transportation options available. Of course, there’s the traditional public transportation system that can save you a bundle. There are also affordable alternatives like Uber and Lyft—car owners that drive you to your destination or temporary car rentals like Car2Go—pay and drive, park and leave.

Don’t purchase your meals at the airport; pack something from home or buy a snack before you get to the airport. Empty your water bottle before TSA check-in and refill it after passing through the security checkpoint. Weigh your luggage with a home scale to make sure you don’t exceed the weight limit.

INSIDER TIP: If you can’t avoid renting a car, see if the rental company has a .co.uk website, which tends to be cheaper than a .com website. Also, check to see if your credit card provides rental insurance.

INSIDER TIP: Want to enjoy some libations before and during your flight? Purchase miniature liquor bottles in town. They’re within TSA’s liquid guidelines and perfectly acceptable.

6. EVERYONE HAS TO EAT. One of the joys of traveling is exploring the town and eating out. The key to enjoying a well-prepared, delicious meal at an affordable price is to venture outside the tourist areas and eat where the locals dine out. Avoid the corporate chain restaurants and opt for the mom-and-pop diners, they usually have great prices for authentic local cuisine. INSIDER TIP: Some of the best locations to find affordable restaurants, bars and stores are in the vicinity of colleges and casinos. Buy local and save money!

66

TRAVEL

7. LOAD UP ON APPS.

8. KEEP UP THE MYSTERY.

There are multitudes of moneysaving apps that are just waiting to be downloaded (usually for free) and used by travelers all over the world. Apps like Groupon, LivingSocial and Valpak can automatically access your location for easy geo targeting.

Most peple would turn their noses up at myster shopping, but hear us out. Most companies have toruble filling mystery shopping positions in airports. It's a great option if you have an extended layover. Not only does it kill time, but you can get payed as much as $100 for simply shopping.

INSIDER TIP: Yelp has a great moneysaving feature called Yelp Check-in Offers. This allows business owners to reward consumers who check-in with discounts on purchases and in some cases free items.

INSIDER TIP: If you have secured your flight early enough, look into companies like Sinclair Customer Metrics. They are always seeking mystery shoppers, especially in airports. It's a quick and easy way to earn cash while traveling.

9. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. As tempting as bookstore and magazine kiosks may be at the airport, avoid them at all costs. No amount of boredom is worth ridiculously high-priced reading material. Be sure to have your digital devices, books and magazines at the ready to help take your mind off of waiting for your flight. INSIDER TIP: If you don't have unlimited data on your digital device, save up your favorite movies, e-books and TV shows on a USB or microSD card and watch away without worrying about incurring insane streaming charges.

COMBAT FATIGUE BY TOM BONANTI

78

S

o, are you dead set on turning those resolutions into reality? Of course you are! The only problem is that you’re so tired all the time that you’d rather hit the sack than even think of the gym, the pool or the dance floor. Fatigue isn’t inevitable, but it can happen to everyone. Busy schedules, poor sleep, inadequate nutrition, are among several factors that can be causing you to feel “too pooped to pop.” If your fatigue has persisted over a period of months and you haven’t had a physical in a while, you should start by calling your doctor and scheduling a checkup, pronto! In the meantime, try following these tips and see if you don’t start feeling a little fire in the engine again. I

DEAL WITH STRESS. Psychological and emotional stress due to work, relationships or financial burdens can cause a build-up of the hormone cortisol in your system. In excess, this steroid can lead to fatigue, low libido, break down of muscle tissue, depression and even heart problems. Handle stress by talking about it to a partner or trusted friend. Instead of ruminating, take a walk, swim, bike ride. Light to moderate exercise can help you blow off steam and gain a clearer perspective. Guided meditation, massage, and Yoga are also great ways of dealing with stress.

CUT OUT ENERGY-ZAPPING CARBOHYDRATES. You need carbohydrates for energy; they are necessary for the body to synthesize protein; without carbohydrates your metabolism will plummet. All of the carbs you eat – fruits, vegetables, grains, candy, doughnuts, and more enter your body and are broken down into glucose which enters your bloodstream to provide you with energy. Some carbs like fresh fruits, green vegetables, nuts and whole grains are broken down slowly so

FITNESS that you have a steady supply of energy over a period of time. Other carbs like candy, doughnuts, pastries, fast foods, etc., hit your bloodstream quickly, give you a quick zap of energy and then leave you tired as you crash from the rush of glucose. The trouble is, your body just cannot produce enough insulin to utilize all of this sugar (glucose) as energy. Result: Excess sugar remains in your bloodstream causing fatigue, weight gain, and possibly type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Solution: Cut back on refined sugars like cookies, candy and soft drinks. Stick with lower carb, fiber-dense fresh fruits, veggies and grains.

HIT THE SACK. Most people need at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Getting too little sleep over a prolonged period of time can lead to depression, mood swings, fatigue, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Make a ritual of going to bed and clear your bedroom of distractions like cell phones, computer or TV. Getting enough quality sleep at night will help you to feel refreshed and invigorated the next morning and all day long.

GET ENOUGH EXERCISE AND STAY ACTIVE. The importance of a regular graded exercise program and an active lifestyle cannot be underestimated or over exaggerated. Not only will you look and feel better physically, but exercise produces in your body endorphins and enkephalens – those feel good hormones, which help you to combat stress with a positive attitude and a killer optimism that’ll keep you on top and in charge in 2016!. INDEPENDENT DAYS MUSTANG. Five orphaned Turkish sisters – Lale (Günes Sensoy), Nur (Doga Zeynep Doguslu), Ece (Elit Iscan), Selma (Tugba Sunguroglu) and Sonay (Ilayda Akdogan) – being raised by their grandmother (Nihal G. Koldas) come under scrutiny in their increasingly fanatically religious seaside village in Mustang (Cohen Media). The aweinspiring feature-length directorial debut by writer/actress Deniz Gamze Ergüven, a Golden Globe-nominated film, begins just as “everything turned to shit in the blink of an eye.” On the last day of school, oldest sister Sonay, along with Selma, Ece, Nur and kid sister Lale horse around at the beach with some boys. When they get home, they are disciplined by their grandmother for “obscene behavior,” as

88

reported by a neighbor. The girls’ uncle Erol (Ayberk Pekcan) immediately brings them to a doctor for a “virginity report.” Once they are cleared, from that day forward, the doors to the house were always locked and anything with the power to “pervert,” including the telephone, was banished. “The house became a wife factory,” with various women offering instruction in cooking, baking, housekeeping and even how to stuff a blanket. The sisters are forced to wear “shapeless, shit-colored dresses” and are forbidden from doing things they used to enjoy, including attending a football match. The scene in which they escape the confines of their captivity, hitch a ride to a match and are almost busted when they appear in the crowd on TV is equally delirious and terrifying.

PHOTOS: MUSTANG COURTESY OF CANNES; YOSEMITE COURTESY OF MONTEREY MEDIA

ENTERTAINMENT

That’s pretty much the pace at which Mustang gallops. The girls continue to push the limits of acceptability as the walls around the house are raised and bars are affixed to the windows. As the sisters are systematically plucked for arranged marriages, Lale, the true insurgent spirit in the family grows increasingly rebellious. The heart-pounding emotional roller coaster of the final minutes of the film will stay with you long after the credits have stopped rolling. Strongly recommended. YOSEMITE. Written and directed by Gabrielle Demeestere, Yosemite (Monterey Media), based on a pieces from James Franco’s book A California Childhood, is separated into three interrelated sections. Set in Palo Alto in the mid-1980s, a time when three grade school boys’ concerns included a mountain lion, pedophiles and access to a handgun, Yosemite reminds us that innocence is a thing of the past. In “Chris,” the titular character (played by Everett Meckler), his father Phil (Franco) and kid brother Alex, go hiking in Yosemite where they stumble upon a campfire near Mirror Lake with a skeleton burning in it. This occurrence changes the tone of the trip, which incorporated a beautiful water-

fall, discussion of Phil’s sobriety medallion and a lesson in the birds and the bees. Chris has it relatively easy compared to some of his classmates. In “Joe,” the main character (played by Alec Mansky), is caught shoplifting but is rescued by Henry (Henry Hopper), a somewhat older guy who shares Joe’s love of comic books. There is something ominous about the way that Henry relates to Joe, although he never makes any sexual advances on the boy, and when a moment of uncomfortable touching occurs, Henry stops as soon as Joe asks him to. Joe is also bullied at school by classmate Ted (Calum John), who regularly touches Joe inappropriately. “Ted,” the third and final segment, features the titular boy, his cat Charlie, his insomniac father Michael (Steven Wiig), who introduces him to an early version of the internet, and the previously mentioned gun. As you might have guessed, the introduction of the gun means that it has to go off in the final act, and the scenes in which the boys pass it back and forth as they hunt for the mountain lion, qualify as “edge of your seat.” Ultimately, Yosemite is one of those indies that seems to take pride in the way that not much happens.
