POP PRINCESS TAKES RIGHTFUL THRONE
Cruz’s blockbuster smash “Dynamite,” the best-selling digital single in UK history.
f you thought the days of pastel, girl-powered bubblegum pop were a thing of the past, think again. Bonnie McKee is making sure of it.
McKee stepped out of the shadows of her contemporaries and released her debut studio album, Trouble, in 2004. The album made little noise and McKee went back to crafting magic for pop music’s biggest names.
Emerging as one of the most prolific young songwriters of the aughts, McKee penned hit songs for Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Ke$ha, Britney Spears, Rita Ora, Carlie Rae Jepsen and Cher. She also cowrote Taio
In promotion of her latest EP, Bombastic, Mckee recently released the colorful video for the infectiously anthemic ode to radio-friendly pop “Wasted Youth.” Bombastic, her first solo effort in 11 years, is available for digital download now.
Marry Me. It seems as if every day a new gay marriage proposal is going viral. The latest comes courtesy of New York couple Mark and Yuval. Yuval got the ultimate surprise when he discovered that Mark panned a flash mob marriage proposal for him. Yuval was overwhelmed by the gesture, which took place in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. The video is making its rounds and has racked up over 600,000 views to date. Oh, and he said 'yes!'

Girl, Bye. Presidential hopeful Ben Carson won’t be getting a groundswell of support from gay supporters any time soon. In an interview with Catholic TV network EWTN, Carson continued his ongoing obssessive onslaught of anti-gay rhetoric. While discussing protecting the rights of the transgender community, Carson said: “Everybody is equal. Everybody has equal rights, but nobody gets extra rights.” He proceeded to put the rest of his foot in his mouth.

ctor John Krasinski and director Ang Lee announced the 88th Academy Awards nominations late last week to a feeding frenzy of reporters and the entertainment world streaming live. With such an eclectic year in film, the Academy's job should have been easy. Right?
PHOTOS COURTESY OF BET, NUMBER 9 FILMS, NETFLIX & NEW LINE.
This year’s crop of Academy Award nominees is as diverse as it is inclusive—a paradox that wasn’t as evident in years prior. The year in transgender and gaythemed films didn’t go unnoticed. Standout honors went to Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Cate Blanchett (Carol), both of whom delivered criticallyacclaimed performances and are repeat nominees and former winners. Moreover, Lady Gaga and Sam Smith will go head to head in the Best Original Song cate-
gory, making this year’s show one of the most visible for LGBT characters, films and performers. With so much “diversity,” the nominations are strikingly devoid of nominees of color. In fact, you can count them on one hand—cue the trending #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. This isn’t the first time (or the last, we fear) there was a monumental lack of diversity throughout the awards ceremony. 2016 is merely another year that points to the ever existing race gap in Hollywood so many believed had closed. This proves, once again, that everything that glitters doesn’t get an Academy Award nomination. This bittersweet diversity (or lack thereof) will probably find a place in host Chris Rock’s opening monologue. Lucky for us. The 88th Academy Awards will air on Sunday February 28 on ABC.

NIGHTLIFE
HE IRRESISTIBLY IRREVERENT DAISY DEADPETALS NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION. WITH A CAREER SPANNING OVER 20 YEARS, SHE’S BECOME A LOCAL LEGEND WITHOUT COMPROMISING HER GOALS OR PENCHANT FOR VIVIENNE WESTWOOD. THE BEAT-FACE BEAUTY’S UNRELENTING WORK ETHIC, BRAINY ONE-LINERS AND OBSERVATIONAL HUMOR HAVE KEPT HER ATOP THE SOUTH FLORIDA FOOD CHAIN FOR YEARS. HERE, THE HARDEST WORKING WOMAN IN SHOWBIZ TALKS DRAG DOPPELGÄNGERS, BODY IMAGE AND WHAT GOES INTO BECOMING THE FEARLESS FEMME FATALE OF FLORIDA’S DRAG SCENE. What goes in to ‘building’ Daisy? What’s your process of getting into the character? First, I shave everything I own, clip my nose hairs and my eyebrows and paint my face. I tuck my d*ck, which is killing me after 22 years, and put on pantyhose. I staple a wig on and put on a dress. It takes about two hours to become Daisy. Is padding not a part of your process? I pad for pageants. I figure, the audience knows I’m a man. Why the f*ck should my toes be in pain from pantyhose squeezing them? Instead, I wear puffy dresses with something poofy at the bottom when I don’t pad. Do you feel differently when you’re in drag versus being out of drag? I am extremely shy in the day, almost the opposite of Daisy. I’ve got no eyebrows. They gave up the good fight. They’re gone. I want attention on stage, but during the day when I am out of drag, I don’t. You don’t necessarily feel confident without eyebrows, but that’s how much I love drag. I’ll suffer for it. It’s a commitment. What was your personality like as a kid? As a kid, I was shy and obviously gay and got made fun of a lot because of it. People would call me names and I’d turn it around on myself, then I wouldn’t get into a fight. That’s where my sense of humor comes from. It was a defense at first. And it was a good training ground for hecklers. When did you decide that the drag art form would be your career of choice? When I first started, I was inspired by my drag mother Damian Dee-Vine, who is now Allanah Starr. When I was young, I saw that you could do drag and be fabulous and she was full-on
club kid. She got to be a dance, a standup comedian, a DJ, an actor, a makeup artist a hairstylist—all of the things that I love. That’s why I started doing it. You’ve been a drag mainstay in the community for some time. What motivates you to continue doing it? A girl’s gotta eat. I’ve been doing it for over two decades. It’s the only thing I’ve done. It’s all I know how to do. I think I’ve gotten to the point where I know what works and what doesn’t. That also keeps getting me hired. With that experience, you’re sharper on the mic and your jokes are better. I am thankful that I keep getting hired. I don’t know what else I would do. I’m horrible with a computer. How do you fit in to the image-obsessed, muscle boy, beach body scene that seems to abound here in South Florida? I don’t fit in, so I was a little self-conscious. I don’t want to go to the beach. Plus, I’m an albino leprechaun, so that doesn’t really workout anyway. I hated my skin when I was young, because I’m so pale. In the second half, I love that I never went out into the sun, because I’ll look a little bit younger. Body image issues extend into the drag community as well. What’s your take on the younger queens that copy the looks of others? I think there’s people you can be inspired by, but I don’t think it’s right or creative for someone to jack a bitch’s look. It’s not going to get you anywhere. You don’t need two. Let the other girl do her thing and make a living. It makes it less special if there’s two. Find what you’re good at. You can be inspired. I’m inspired by Madonna. Put your own spin on something that you like.

VIOLET THURSDAY 1/21 AT 7:30PM
Broward Center for the Performing Arts Slow Burn Theatre’s newest production is the winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical in 1996. Based off of Doris Betts’s short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” the musical takes place in 1964 and involves the plight of a disfigured woman with hopes that a TV evangelist can somehow cure her. This goal takes her from North Carolina to Oklahoma where she meets a young black soldier and a new outlook on life. They bond over their shared outsider status and develop a close relationship. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.
DAWN OF THE DEAD FRIDAY 1/22 AT 9:30PM
Movies of Lake Worth The eighth film in the Palm Beach County Grindhouse Series is one of George Romero’s most beloved films. Dawn of the Dead, a quasi-sequel to Romero’s classic
Night of the Living Dead, finds reanimated corpses seizing control of the entire country. A ragtag band of friends discovers shelter in a suburban mall where they coup up for as long as they can. Themes of consumerism and survival abound in a film that inspired the currently omnipresent The Walking Dead franchise. The presentation includes a raffle and an exclusive gift for the first 100 attendees. 9:30 p.m. Movies of Lake Worth. 1380 Lake Worth Rd. Lake Worth. 33467.
THE JAZZ SINGER FRIDAY 1/22 AT 8PM
Willow Theatre Al Jolson’s 1927 film The Jazz Singer will forever be known as America’s first feature-length “talkie,” signaling the decline of the silent film era. This musical is a version of that film, following the coming of age of a talented Jewish singer who defies his father’s wishes to pursue a career as an entertainer. The show includes such musical standards as “Baby Face,” “I’m Sittin’ on Top of the World,” “I’m Just Wild About Harry,” and “You Made Me Love You.” 8:00 p.m. Willow Theatre. 300 S. Military Trail. Boca Raton. 33486.

MADONNA SATURDAY 1/23 AT 8PM
American Airlines Arena The Queen of Pop has consistently fought for LGBT rights in meaningful and provocative ways, whether ironically dressing as a Boy Scout or kissing Britney Spears on live TV. She also happens to be the best-selling female recording artist of all time, despite once enraging the Catholic Church with her “Like a Prayer” video and famously offending David Letterman on his talk show. Even if her popularity has waned a bit in recent years, she can still put on a grand concert as this well-received show attests. 8:00 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.
WHO KILLED JOAN CRAWFORD? SATURDAY 1/23 AT 8PM
Island City Stage Michael Leeds’ new play revels in the important space Joan Crawford lives in the hearts of the LGBT community. Five men, dressed as the diva herself, arrive at a cabin for a surprise party. Each attendant has attempted to dress in one of
Crawford’s signature styles, with mixed results. As they wait for the birthday boy, the “Joans” drink, dish, and expose their dark secret before, one by one, they’re systematically murdered in this uproarious comedic whodunit. 8:00 p.m. Island City Stage. 2304 N. Dixie Highway. Wilton Manors. 33304.
BILL MAHER SUNDAY 1/24 AT 8PM
James L. Knight Center LGBT activist and sociopolitical commentator Bill Maher is known as much for his liberal views as for his comedy. He hosted popular late-night roundtable discussion Politically Incorrect for many years before moving on to his current gig on Real Time with Bill Maher. Maher was a vocal proponent for samesex marriage long before it was popular. He has also routinely promoted the legalization of marijuana and stronger protections for animal rights. His 2008 critically-acclaimed documentary film Religulous exposed the corrupt practices of religions throughout the world. 8:00 p.m. Fillmore. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

THE WEEK
WWE RAW MONDAY 1/25 AT 7:30PM
American Airlines Arena The super testosterone filled world of scripted wrestling may not have seemed like an LGBT-friendly environment some 30 years ago when it debuted, but the WWE has come to be one of the most LGBT-friendly “sports.” They even have a notable, openly gay wrestler named Darren Young. Tonight in Miami, the wrestlers battle live. Famous performers like John Cena, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Alberto del Rio, and Kevin Owens will all be in attendance, smashing chairs over each other’s backs and pile driving opponents. 7:30 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.25
JACKIE MASON TUESDAY 1/26 AT 8PM
Kravis Center for the Performing Arts Jackie Mason’s popularity has spanned over a half century worth of Borscht Belt humor. He considers himself an “equal opportunity offender” and enjoys poking fun at political issues and public figures.
He once caused a minor outrage when he poked his middle finger straight up during a stint on The Ed Sullivan Show at Mr. Sullivan in 1964. Mason is also quite the humanitarian, forming the One Jerusalem organization in order to try and help Jerusalem maintain a united Jerusalem as the un-divided capital of Israel. 8:00 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.
THE BOOK OF MORMON WEDNESDAY 1/27 AT 8PM
Broward Center for the Performing Arts After a sold-out run last year, The Book of Mormon returns to the Broward Center. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the Tony-winning musical follows the missionary adventures of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham as they try to spread their religious fervor in Uganda. Lampooning both the Mormon religion and traditional Broadway musicals, The Book of Mormon has received unanimous critical adoration for its plot, choreography, and score. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

COMMUNITY inding yourself is a neverending story. With every page turn in your book of life, a new path of growth is forged. Angel Lopez’s journey through life has been a transition to his real self every step of the way.
Lopez, like many others, knew who he was at a very young age. Also like many others, the journey of expression took time with some wild turns along the way. Before Lopez could even make sense of his internal feelings, he was struck with another life-altering quest that he had to overcome. “I remember very distantly around third or fourth grade; I would go to bed thinking of this particular boy that I knew, a classmate of mine,” Lopez remembers. “I remember identifying with him and wanting to be him.” At the age of 11, Lopez was involved in a traffic accident with his family. A drunk driver rammed their vehicle and as an unfortunate casualty, Lopez lost use of the left side of his body. Lopez was paralyzed and his rehabilitation was more than a physical transformation. “I was in a coma with some brain injury," expresses Lopez. "I woke up and went from being regular and able-bodied to having half of my body paralyzed with two broken legs. It took years upon years of therapy just to be able to learn how to deal with my new disability.” Lopez’s accident, although traumatic, brought out a strong sense of will power within him. He was determined at a young age to prosper despite his injuries and not be pitied due to them. Lopez’s mental strength to accept his new normal also lent itself to his rationale on his outward appearance. He knew he was a different type of man and internally never identified as female, despite being assigned so at birth. By age 14, Lopez came out as lesbian to his close friends and then his family. “The interesting thing is that I came out
as a teenager, but I never identified with the (gay) community,” confesses Lopez. “I guess to put a name to how I felt on the spectrum, that was the closest name for me to go by. I wasn’t introduce to the concept of transgender until I was in college.” Lopez had a distinct ability as a teenager and in his early twenties to detach his body issues from how he viewed himself. It wasn’t until he was in college that his path started to change. He slowly realized that in order to be true to himself, he would have to be representative of his new truth. He would have to sit down his wife and explain to her his new truth, his need to transition. He would once again have to come out to his friends and family. He would once again have to endure another physical journey. “My motivating factor is to be genuine to myself and not hide this person that I felt I have always been but haven’t been able to express,” conveys Lopez. “Moments in my childhood, I was really restricted to explore it. Moving out of my parents home, I felt liberated.” There was a point in Lopez’s life were he embraced his masculinity while accepting his female form. Lopez believes that every person’s journey, in every stage, is representative of their truth in that moment. Today, Lopez is discovering his new truth and with support from his wife, family and friends, he is exploring a new life. “There are people that identify as trans and never take hormones, never go through surgery and that’s okay as well," divulges Lopez. "Transitioning, for them, could be that they identify as trans and that’s it. It’s up to us as individuals to determine how we identify with a gender.” Lopez started hormone therapy last year. Currently, Lopez is ready to take the next step and he’s planning for top surgery. He has started a Go Fund Me account at www. gofundme.com/cugkyszr to help aid in his endeavors. Lopez is eager to express his true self outwardly and match who he has always been inside.

HOWARD SELF IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY IS HELPING PEOPLE CHANGE THE WAY THEY SEE THEMSELVES. IF PICTURES ARE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS, HOWARD ZUCKER'S PROCESS OF IMAGING AND SELF-ANALYSIS SPEAKS VOLUMES. MOREOVER, ZUCKER'S WORK IS AN INTERACTIVE FORM OF SELF-REFLECTION. SMILE FOR THE CAMERA AND PREPARE FOR THE ULTIMATE SELFIE.
P
hotographer Howard Zucker has dedicated his life's work behind the camera to making the self-conscious feel empowered. His Self Image Photography has helped people dispel their insecurities and gain a true sense of self-worth and admiration for their own bodies.
Zucker has been a natural behind the camera since he was a young boy. He didn’t realize his true potential, however, until the mid '90s. As AOL was taking off, Zucker was frequently asked by his friends to capture their likeness for profile images. While doing so, he noticed something profound happening. “I received extremely positive feedback from my friends,” a humbled Zucker mentions. “I saw that it could change lives.” Zucker slowly transitioned from his corporate career into photography full-time to explore how he could further help people achieve self-acceptance. He kept his intentions hush-hush in the beginning while he perfected his craft, enlisting a therapist to help him fully grasp the psychology of it all. “Howard Self Image Photography has taken away a lot of my physical insecurities,” asserts Jeff Gammons, one of Zucker's clients. “I’ve posted them online, something I’ve never done before, and I’ve been able to meet new people. I’m proud of who I am now.” It would be nice to say that it’s as easy as capturing an irresistible photo, but the process behind his Self Image Photography is much more than just that. Zucker does not claim to be a therapist but the work he
does is a healing modality. He has helped transform people’s lives in an extremely impactful way. “I’m more comfortable and at peace with my whole body than I’ve ever been,” explains David Baker, another one of Zucker's clients. “Howard’s photos have been an important part of my personal growth process.” Zucker's sessions don’t just happen overnight, they take time–sometimes days or even months. The process starts once you find out about his services. Then, whether on the phone or face-to-face, Zucker builds a bond with clients to cultivate trustworthiness and a sense of familiarity. “Howard identifies your strengths and brings them out in the photo shoot,” shares James Wolfe, a former client. “He helped me see myself in a different light, both literally and physically.” Zucker’s subjects are involved in every step of the process. During the photo shoot, Zucker takes time to review each image with his participant. As the day of the shoot can be an overwhelming experience, a follow-up appointment is arranged for renewed observation. Zucker’s Self Image Photography has helped countless individuals, from amputees to those who suffer with body dysmorphia. He also works with individuals who have less severe self-perceptions, like those of us who don’t like our smile, feel that we’re too short or obsess about our hair loss. WHAT'S STALLING YOUR WEIGHT LOSS BY TOM BONANTI
80
T
his time of the year more and more people are embarking on weight loss programs. While this is a positive step forward, many of these folks will experience frustration and failure. Some expect magic, overnight results. Others start off with great intentions, but make mistakes along the way which sabotage their hard work and results. Here’s a list of common pitfalls that could be stalling your weight loss, as well as suggestions for new habits that just might have you delighted at your success! I
WATCH YOUR CALORIES. In order to lose weight, you must operate in a negative calorie-balanced diet. One pound of bodyweight is equivalent to 3500 calories. If you require 2500 calories just to maintain your weight (BMR – Basil Metabolic Rate), you need to cut back to 2000 calories daily and exercise 30 minutes daily (to burn another 250 calories) in order to see a 1-5 lb. weight loss in one week. Keep track of calories by maintaining a food journal. Implement portion control by using a food scale and measuring utensils. Learn visual cues to estimate portion sizes. For example, 3 ounces of protein is the size of a deck of cards, and one cup of pasta resembles a baseball.
EAT WELL AND OFTEN. Eat breakfast and don’t skip meals. When you cut out meals, especially breakfast (your most important meal), your body goes into a starvation mode – it shuts down its calorieburning mechanisms and begins to store fat. Without fuel from proper nutrition, your metabolism will nose-dive and you’ll feel exhausted, or drained. This recipe for ruining your weight loss program (promulgated by many fad diet programs) can be avoided by daily having a healthy breakfast. Eat consistently throughout the day, every 2-3 hours, smaller meals and snacks. This way your body gets a steady supply of carbs for energy, protein for healthy muscles and “good fats” for the production of essential
FITNESS hormones. Also, you’ll have the energy to fuel your active life-style!
GET MORE EXERCISE. Aerobic exercise, like running, walking, cycling, and swimming require you to work harder and utilize more oxygen. These activities also burn more calories. Anaerobic exercise, i.e. weight training burns less calories overall, but increases your body’s muscle mass. The more lean muscle you carry, the more fat and calories you’ll burn, even at rest. A successful weight loss program must include healthy eating, aerobic activity (daily 30 minutes) and anaerobic resistance training (weights 2 – 3 times per week for 20 minutes). With these basics in place, here are some other factors to consider:
·
Get enough sleep (8 – 10 hours) so that your body can rest and produce regulatory hormones that can affect your weight and energy levels.
· Know the numbers (1 gram of carbs = 4 calories; 1 gram of protein = 4 calories; 1 gram of fat = 9 calories; 1 gram of alcohol = 7 empty calories!) · Be on guard against stress eating, mindless eating in front of the TV and, worst of all, late night binge eating. · Too much partying on weekends can lead to mucho extra calories and hang- overs thatʼll put the kibosh on your training regime. Remember weight loss is gradual – it takes patience and hard work. Yet, the results are worth it – a healthier, more confident and attractive you in the spring of 2016.
