Are You Ready For A Red Carpet, Celebrity-Style Photo Shoot? BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Celebrity stylist Joey Rolon is relocating his Miami Beach fashion studio to Fort Lauderdale and rebranding it as Funky Sexy Studios. “We decided to move to Fort Lauderdale in regards to spacing and purpose,” said owner and creative genius Joey Rolon. The rebranding of what was formerly known as Funky Sexy Couture, a “wearable art gallery” featuring gaudy, urban and eccentric rock-nroll-inspired apparel and accessories, will include a photography studio and other services that were once offered at multiple locations around Miami. “We will provide topof-the-line services from professional make-up artists and photographers to hair stylists, choreographers etc.,” said Rolon, who will

10

serve as a celebrity wardrobe stylist. Rolon received his start in New York from Emmy Award-winning stylist Patricia Fields in the mid1990s. In 2000, as a Tony Award-nominated wardrobe stylist, Rolon decided to relocated to Miami where he opened the original Funky Sexy on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. The store became his sanctuary for creative, oneof-a-kind designs. By 2009, he moved the store location to Washington Avenue and changed the name to Funky Sexy Couture. He received praise from celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Pit Bull and popular magazines like Vogue. “Although our services cater to celebrity clientele, we work with anyone because, in our eyes, theguymag

theguymag

everyone is a celebrity and everyone should feel that way,” said Rolon. Have a fabulous wedding coming up or want to create that unique, overthe-top look for your next Halloween extravaganza? “Weddings, Burning Man, Halloween, everything,” said Rolon’s assistant Tonio DeAmbra. “It will be a red-carpet, celebrity experience.” The new photography studio is currently under construction with an opening date still to be decided. However, Rolon has begun accepting orders. If interested, call DeAmbra at 305-417-5459. For updates on the new store location, follow their Facebook page or visit their website for more information.

RECREATION

Scuba Diving: Submerge Yourself In The Deep Blue Sea BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Explore a historical shipwreck off the coast of Florida. Snap captivating photos of our majestic coral reefs as the sun’s rays illuminate them. Swim beside a school of fish and witness the vibrancy of the underwater world. South Florida is a hotbed for scuba diving thrill-seekers, from the sunken ship Shasha Boekanier in West Palm Beach to the Marquesas Reef Line in Key West. There are multiple excursions that visitors and locals alike can enjoy. Fort Lauderdale has more than a dozen. Swim through the Barracuda Reef for awesome fish watching. Drift dive for more than two miles at Hammerhead Reef. Rummage through the battered ships of Guy Harvey or Mercedes I, Fort Lauderdale’s

18

share with us on guymag.net

most famous shipwreck. But first you most be prepared for your underwater journey. State law doesn’t require a person to have a scuba diving certificate to take the plunge, but that certainly doesn’t mean you should shimmy into your wetsuit and strap on your scuba gear without proper training first. As a matter of fact, it is virtually impossible to find any scuba company that would supply an untrained individual with diving equipment unless they are adequately trained in the do’s and don’t’s of scuba diving. Certificates can cost you anywhere from $500 for advance training and lessons. Fortunately for the occasional scuba diver and first time adventurer, there are more affordable, same-day theguymag

theguymag

scuba classes. In an introductory course, newbies practice basic safety techniques in a pool and receive some brief classroom instruction in order to prepare for their first underwater dive. At Sea Experience (801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale FL 33316; 954-7703483), students can take courses to receive a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certificate, which is accepted worldwide for scuba diving. But that’s not all, Sea Experience is Fort Lauderdale’s one-step-shop for everything related to diving. Get your scuba gear there. Plan a trip or reserve your next excursion with them. Or advance to the next level with their more advanced scuba diving courses.

NON-PROFIT PROFILE

Equality Florida: A LGBT Knight In Shining Armor BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Fifty percent of Florida residents live in parts of the state that have no legal protections for LGBT individuals. Equality Florida is fighting to change that. CEO Nadine Smith and Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer created the organization in 1997 when the state’s progressive movement was dramatically hindered by a political shift to the right. They knew something needed to be done and a civil rights organization that advocated full equality was the key. Equality Florida fights on two fronts. Equality Florida Institute Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, works to educate elected officials, businesses and the public on issues important to the community. Equality Florida, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, combats government action that would adversely impact LGBT civil rights and their political action committee (PAC) endorses pro-LGBT candidates. Their big initiative of the moment is coalescing support behind the Florida Competitive Workforce Act -- a bill that would prohibit LGBT discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. But “we can’t win this fight without the support of Republicans,” said South Florida Development Director Row Iliescu, adding that the organization has hired new staff in Pensacola, Florida’s ultra conservative region of the Panhandle and on the ground in

20

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

Jacksonville, where activists are pushing for the passage of an inclusive, human rights ordinance. The group has a current membership of 200,000 throughout the state. If by chance any city in Florida tries to restrict or infringe on LGBT rights, Equality Florida jumps into action providing critical grassroots infrastructure, public awareness or physical manpower in the form of passionate volunteers. “We couldn’t do one tenth of what we do without our amazing volunteers,” said Iliescu. There are many ways to contribute to the efforts of Equality Florida to maintain its vigilance -- as a volunteer, donor or attendee at one of their many galas held across the state in 14 different cities each year. By far their largest fundraiser is the Broward County gala. In its 13th year, the event will be held in the Panorama Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six on November 15. Anyone interested in a sponsorship should contact Iliescu via email at row@eqfl.org. To become a member and receive regular updates on initiatives and political candidates, visit www.eqfl.org/becomemember. Lastly, their Equality Florida Business Guide lists pro-equality businesses in Florida. Become a registered business at ab4e.org.

Dr. Daniel Man: The Art And Artistry Of Plastic Surgery BY

CLIFF DUNN

“The best plastic surgeon is someone who has mastered his technique, and who is also a great artist.” For Israeli-born plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Daniel Man, his work is as much about the artistry that goes into each individual procedure as it is about the decades of science that have gone into perfecting that surgical discipline. “People should be able to look the way they want to look, and feel the way they want to feel,” offers Man, who was born in the northern Israeli town of Afula. The son of Holocaust survivors, his father, Boris, was a general vascular surgeon and adventurer, who introduced his son to medicine and the environs of an operating room before his 13th birthday, while his mother, Ludwika, was a self-taught artist who gave woodworking lessons to her son and his friends, and instilled in him a lifelong passion for art. That artistic passion and intellectual curiosity—combined with a sense of adventure inherited from his father— would manifest itself in Man’s life’s work. After graduating from Sackler Medical School at Tel Aviv University, Man came to the United States, where he attended Montefiore Medical Center, the teaching hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, followed by a Fellowship at University of Louisville School of Medicine. Throughout his education, he placed great emphasis on learning the human sciences, including chemistry, physiology, biology, and human anatomy. Still, Man says there’s only so much a skilled surgeon can learn from books. “A good surgeon must learn to be a good listener,” he explains. “A patient has taken the time to find you, to seek out your expertise, and to benefit from your education and training. “I have a responsibility to take the time 44

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

to listen, to understand the patient’s expectations and their reasonable goals, and to be sure they are realistically met. That never stops.” In Man’s view, there is a great deal that artists and surgeons enjoy in common. “Both surgeons and artists need to be experts in human anatomy, and there are many areas in which surgery and art complement each other: Light, shadow, and color play important roles in both surgery and art. Man says that while he derives an abiding love for art from his mother, her talent wasn’t a heritable trait. That didn’t stop him from taking up the discipline the hard way. “I didn’t go to art school,” the doctor acknowledges. “But as a surgeon, one of the greatest interactions you can have with your patient is to show him or her what a procedure’s results will look like. theguymag

guymagtube

“When I began performing surgeries video imaging wasn’t available, so I realized that drawing, which wasn’t one of my great talents, was the only readily available solution. So I learned how to draw.” Through books and individual instruction, Man taught himself to draw and paint. “In plastic surgery, the patient needs to look good not only surgically, but artistically too. This means that when a plastic surgeon looks at a face, ‘what to do’ should be decided before ‘how to do it’— much as when an artist looks at a canvas, and sees the finished picture in his mind’s eye long before he picks up paint and brush.” Man brings that artistic sensibility to bear in every procedure and surgery. “As an artist, I understand the importance of color and distortion. When I perform a facelift, I make it more natural through the use of artistic principles, so you can’t see scars or changes that we make to the hairline or behind the ears.” share with us on guymag.net

Of course, in the “real world,” an artist enjoys freedom to revise his work until it is perfectly and artistically pleasing to the eye, while a surgeon is constrained from trial and error experimentation on a living subject. There comes a point when the artist must give way to the skilled surgeon, and this is where Man’s experienced technique and technical skills take the controls. Man’s technique and artistry have found an appreciative list of patients within the LGBT community, a clientele that finds in him a sympathetic listener and medical professional. “No matter who you are, everyone has a vision of their own unique identity, of how they really see themselves. They want to feel more complete. And even if that would change them radically, they want to look better, but not different. They still want to look natural.” Man is recognized as a leader in treating Gynecomastia—the swelling of the theguymag

breast tissue in males—which affects about 40 percent of American men. The condition (which has come to be called a number of things, none of them flattering) is caused by factors that include weight gain, estrogen, drugs, medications, and steroids. “There are a number of advantages for men to this technique,” Man explains. “They don’t have residual breast tissue. The nipple areola is now in a higher position, which is how it is when we’re younger. As we age, the nipple areolae drift lower. We remove the breast tissue and lift the skin into a higher position, and they look young again.” As well as pioneering techniques in skin rejuvenation, cosmetic laser surgery, liposuction, facelifts and body procedures, Man’s artistic and technical expertise can be seen in his design of a unique instrument called the ART (“Articulating, Reclining, Tilting”) Surgical Bed, which is used in surgical procedures to create multiple positions and angles for the patient. In 2012, he received the American Soci46

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

ety for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Best NonSurgical Facial Makeover Award, and the organization’s 2013 Best Overall Patient Enhancement Award. Man’s work has been published internationally in innumerable trade and medical journals, and he has been featured on Good Morning, America, ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings, American Health Network’s Ask The Doctor, CNN, CNBC, Aesthetic TV, Vogue, Allure, Newsweek, OMNI Magazine, The New York Times, and many other media sources. He was recognized by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder as “Humanitarian of the Year” for his work with crime victims, especially victims of domestic abuse. All of which speaks to Man’s personal mission, as an artist, a surgeon, and a believer in the possible. As he puts it: “The mind of a thinking person is always asking itself, ‘How can I make things better?’” theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Matthew Wilson: Twist Nightclub’s Real-Life Ken Doll

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Matthew Wilson story begins as an all-toocommon tail of a gay boy living in a southern conservative town with a strict Christian family. Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, Wilson along with his identical twin and three other sibling brothers were the All-American boys that fantasies are made of -- tall, athletic, blond and handsome. Wilson was a complete jock running track and playing soccer and football. “I didn’t love it, but I did it,” Wilson recalled. He did exactly what a southern boy was expected to do with a little bad boy flare. The twin’s antics pushed the boundaries. So in their junior year of high school, their parents shipped them off to a Christian military school at a breeding ground for the football elite, Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. They assimilated quickly as the alpha males but Wilson hidden desire plagued his mental state and without divulging his secret, he did what little he could to sooth his true passion. “I wanted to be a cheerleader,” he said. “I would change my position so I could watch the

cheerleaders out of the side of my helmet.” The agony would continue for years as Wilson took baby steps to rid himself of the jock persona and southern way of life. He convinced his twin to attend the only liberal college in Georgia that wasn’t focused on football-- Georgia College and State University. There he found solace in a friend, Erin Willbanks, who kept hold of his secret. “I wore her red heels,” he recalled. “She was my getaway!” But he still fought the urge and as a last ditch effort, he enrolled into a conversion camp, Love Won Out, at age 21. “It was my last attempt before I was like ‘let me date a guy,’” he said. When he left camp, he put the methods taught to him to work but a tragic accident in his community obliterated all of it -- three girls from his hometown were killed in a fatal car crash. The town was devastated, but it brought meaning to Wilson’s life. “If I don’t get real, people are not going to know who I truly am,” Wilson realized. So at age 22, he researched the best cheertheguymag

Matthew Wilson’s Favorite Drink This special drink is Matthew Wilson’s favorite. “It’s refreshing and simple” he says, testifying to its popularity. Stop by Twist and order it garnished with a fresh orange wedge and a cherry.

Tequila Sunrise 4 ounces orange juice (fresh squeezed is preferred) 2 ounces white tequila 1/2 ounce grenadine Put ice cubes into a highball glass. Pour in the tequila followed by the orange juice. Now slowly pour the grenadine in so it sinks to the bottom. Optionally garnish with a citrus wedge or sliver of orange peel.

leading teams and made his way to Hawaii Pacific University. His parents cut him off, but he worked three jobs and spent his spare time training. By his second year, it paid off and Wilson was given a full scholarship to Hawaii University after the head cheerleading coach witnessed his amazing skills. Nothing could stop Wilson and he continued to pursue his passions. He graduated with an accounting degree, did a short two-month trip back home to reconnect with the family, and then left on a road trip at age 26 to Hollywood, California to make it as an actor. He met some amazing people including celebrities like Michelle Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow, received some exposure on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show, and attended the Academy Awards and Governors Ball. But he ended up moving to Denver, Colorado a year later for a guy he was dating. The relationship didn’t work out, but his cheerleading passion reignited when he came down to Florida and was offered to cheer share with us on guymag.net

with the Top Gun 005. While looking for work, he walked into Twist South Beach with no bartending experience and pushed for a job. “Richard Trainer, one of the owners, saw something in me and gave me a chance.” Wilson said. “Glenn Davis, the manager and my mentor, has been so protective of me as I’ve grown.” Wilson still has the passion for the limelight. He is currently working with Producer ODK on a music video of the Ken Barbie version of the hit song Barbie Girl by the group Aqua. People constantly refer to him as a Ken doll, so why not? Mommies And Mourning: An Interview With Lesléa Newman

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

Lesbian writer Lesléa Newman writes in many different literary genres. She is perhaps best known for her children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies, first published in 1989, which has the distinction of being a consistently challenged and banned book. Over time, the subject matter, lesbian moms raising a child, has become less shocking than it was more than 25 years ago, but there will always be someone there to make a fuss. A new edition of Newman’s Heather Has Two Mommies (Candlewick, 2015) was recently published and features updated artwork. Newman’s other new title is I Carry My Mother (Headmistress Press, 2015), a book-length poem. Newman will read from and talk about her 2012 book October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard, May 13 at 7 pm at Stonewall National Museum – Wilton Manors Gallery, 2157 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. The event is free and open to the public. GS: In October Mourning everything has a voice, including the truck, the road, the fence and the state of Wyoming, to mention a few.

58

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

LN: When I started writing, I started with a question, which was “What happened at that fence?” In my research, I found out that the incident took place in about 15 minutes. That stunned me. There’s been so much written about it and I wondered what I could bring to it, as a poet, that would shed some light on this or what could I personally learn. I can tap into the poetic voices of these various objects that were there. I kept thinking, I wish there were witnesses. Then I had my a-ha moment. There was a witness – the fence. There were others – the stars and the truck. But the fence has become such an iconic image. Then I thought, the fence was an innocent bystander, which is why I start the book with (the poem) “The Fence (before).” I realized that I had to end with “The Fence (after).” The fence became very important to me as I was writing the book. GS: Like October Mourning, I Carry My Mother, your most recent book, is a booklength cycle of poems. LN: It actually wasn’t the first time I’d done this. My book Still Life With Buddy, which came out in 1997, is a booklength series of poems that tells the story of a passionate relationship between a lesbian and a gay man living with and then dying of AIDS. That’s my favorite way to tackle a subject. I think it calls upon all that I’ve learned about writing. Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, voice, research. It gives me the opportunity and the theguymag

challenge to bring all my training and experience into play. That’s why I love to do that. I use that form when I’m tackling subjects of massive grief. The form/forms allow me to look at the experience from a myriad of ways. It allows me to rein in the unmanageable feelings of grief and pour them into a container that can hold them. It allows me to both draw closer to and distance myself from the experience. When I’m crafting a formal poem, I have to go over the material repeatedly which brings me closer to the material. I have to think about line breaks and metaphor and enjambment and rhyme and syllable count. That tension of closeness and distance comes forth in the poems. GS: Continuing with the subject of grief, your anthology, A Loving Testimony: Remembering Loved Ones Lost to AIDS was published 20 years ago this year. With that book, Still Life With Buddy, October Mourning and I Carry My Mother in mind, please say something about the intersection of tragedy and art. LN: It’s definitely what gets me through. I don’t know how people who don’t create something out of that kind of experience manage. I remember Paul Monette’s book Love Alone: Eighteen Elegies for Rog and how he said he stayed up all night writing that book when Roger died, It’s what kept him alive. I feel that way sometimes as well. Writing is my solace, my safe place. I have the wonderful experience of launching my work into the world and having it resonate for other people. Even if that never happened again, I would still write, still comfort myself in that way. Besides poetry, the way I can comfort myself during a period of grief is by writing children’s books, such as Too Far Away To Touch and The Best Cat In the World. Grief is such a primal feeling. Children just dive into their emoshare with us on guymag.net

tions in such a complete way. For me, writing a picture book is a way to deal with such a strong emotion for which there is sometimes no comfort. GS: 2015 has been a big year for you in terms of publishing. In addition to I Carry My Mother, a brand new edition of your classic children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies Mommies, featuring illustrations by Laura Cornell, was published. Why was this the right time for a new edition of the book? LN: The book had been out of print for a little while. People had been clamoring for it. I was having lunch with my editor at Candlewick Press and she asked what was going on with Heather…I told her it was out of print. We both had the same idea (to reissue it). It was their idea to newly illustrate the book, to make it look more contemporary. With everything going on with marriage equality, it seemed like the right time. It’s also served as a benchmark for people to look back on the last 25 years and see what’s happened regarding LGBT rights. It’s been an amazing journey. GS: What can people expect from the October Mourning event at the Stonewall Gallery in May? LN: The event is called “He Continues To Make A Difference: The Story of Matthew Shepard.” Within the event, I talk about my connection to Matthew Shepard, I read from the book, I show images from a PowerPoint and then I challenge the audience in a very specific way to do something to make the world a safer place for LGBT youth and allies. GS: Have you started working on or thinking about your next book project? LN: I’m always thinking about and working on something new. I recently completed and am still tinkering with a new picture book called Sparkle Boy, about a little boy who loves sparkly things just like his sister. It’s about him, but it’s equally about his sister’s journey because at first, she’s not very happy about this.

TRAVEL

Escape To Key West For A Mini Weekend Getaway BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Don’t we South Floridians have it made to be able to call Key West part of our home. The gorgeous paradise island is part of South Florida’s Monroe County, which is a convenient four-hour drive south from Wilton Manors. And what’s more comforting to know is that the tropical oasis is just as gay friendly (if not more) as parts of its sister counties, Miami-Dade, Broward and West Palm. In fact, Key West is one of Florida’s first wellknown gay travel destinations. And although the gay establishments in the laidback town have dwindled since its flamboyant heydays in the 1980s and 1990s, the gay allure still exists. But before you check into your gay resort and immerse yourself in the relaxing vibe of the Key West’s atmosphere, enjoy your scenic drive with a few treasured stops along the way. Get in your car and start heading down at a fairly descent time on Saturday morning, lets say around 10 am, and you’ll be able to take advantage of some interesting pit stops and make it to your hotel right on time for check-in. Begin your road trip exploration with a stop at Alabama

Jacks (58000 Card Sound Rd. Key Largo FL 33037; 305-248-8741) for a bite to eat and a refreshing drink right before you leave the tip of the peninsula. The seafood rustic-shack restaurant in the middle of nowhere captivates with live music and renowned dishes like their conch fritters and grilled dolphin. You’ll adore the waterside dining exposure and you’ll definitely be tempted to leave with an Alabama Jack shirt or shot glass as a souvenir. But mind your manners, because although there hasn’t been any recorded aggression against gays, it is a restaurant frequented by motorcycle groups and truckers. Next stop on your journey is the Old Road Gallery (88888 Overseas Hwy. Tavernier FL 33070; 305-852-8935), formerly the Rain Barrel Sculpture Gallery two miles up the road. This art lovers’ paradise is filled with magnificent one-ofa-kind designs made from wood, glass, metals and ceramic. Tour their walk through sculpture garden and take home an affordable piece that you just can’t leave behind. Back in your car, head approximately 6 miles theguymag

down the road to experience something you’ve probably never done before,--feeding Tarpons. Tarpons are big fish that shimmer as the sun’s rays hit their silver and green scales. At Robbie’s of Islamorada (77522 Overseas Hwy. Islamorada FL 33036; 877-6648498), you get the chance to see them spring from the water as they catch bait from your hand. What’s even more fascinating then the thrill and pure adrenaline rush you experience when that beast from the water comes leaping for your hand is the remarkable story that led to the school of Tarpon frequenting the Robbie’s dock – make sure to inquire while you’re there. Admission price is just $1 and a bucket of fish will run you $3. Just remember to bring change for taxes. Now that you’re fed and had some excitement, get out your camera to snap several shots as you coast over the vast turquoise waters on the Seven Mile Bridge. Known to be one of the longest bridges in the U.S., the Seven Mile Bridge that connects Knight’s Key to Little Duck Key is beyond impressive and is a true feat in manmade construction of the 20th century. As your road trip winds down and you make your way into Key West, there are three major gay resorts to take a quick catnap before you’re out for dinner and perhaps some partying. Pick between the two clothing-optional gay guesthouses on Fleming Street, the newly renovated Equator Resort (818 Fleming St. Key West FL 33040; 305-294-7775) or Island House Key West (1129 Fleming St. Key West FL 33040; 800-890-6284) where there’s an all-male staff and 24-hour café. Or, check-in to the only gay hotel in the center of it all on Duval Street in Old Town Key West, the New Orleans House (724 Duval St. Key share with us on guymag.net

West FL; 305-293-9800), a mega complex that boost a hotel, nightclub and two restaurants. Now that you’re settled in and well rested, it’s time to energize your body with a bite to eat. The New Orleans House has two restaurants onsite for your convenience, Joe’s Chicken Shack and Pizza Joe’s. But if you want to venture out on the town, try a delicious meal on the porch of Nine One Five (915 Duval Street Key West FL 33040; 305-296-0669). Circle-back to the New Orleans House and step into their party sanctuary, the Bourbon Street Pub. The club features five bars, the Men of Bourbon (Go-Go Dancers), live performances, and a men’s only clothing-optional garden bar with a pool and Jacuzzi. Or stop by the icon drag house 801 Bourbon Street, a cherished nightclub for over 30 years, for a fabulous cabaret show. On Sunday take it easy and just relax. Start your day with a hearty breakfast at gay owned Azur Restaurant (425 Grinnell St. Key West FL 33040; 305-292-2987) where you can indulge in a Mediterranean specialty or order a traditional egg and bacon dish. If you’re interested in browsing some fun knickknacks, hit up The Little Red (901 Caroline St. Key West FL 33040; 305-396-7582) for all sort of cool novelty items like I love Key West T-shirts. To relax and bask in the sun feeling comfortable and safe, make your way to Higgs Beach (Atlantic Blvd. Key West FL 33040). Remember your beach essentials, a towel and beach chair. And before you head back north to complete your trip, stop into Salute! On The Beach (1000 Atlantic Blvd. Key West FL 33040; 305-2921117), for a late Italian-Caribbean lunch.

RESORT

Island Sands Inn: A Nouveau Bed And Breakfast

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Long gone are the days when staying at a bed and breakfast meant sharing a commode along with other common areas in a dated, two-story Victorian house with an elderly, conservative cat lady. Island Sands Inn has captured the essence of the new style of bed and breakfast. The quaint, tropical oasis right off of Wilton Drive on NE 7th Avenue provides a cozy feeling of home while offering guests privacy and exclusivity. Just imagine a bed and breakfast and boutique hotel combined. Step through the gated entrance and approach the poolside accommodations. You will find three private guest rooms with keyless entry. There’s no sharing of a bathroom, kitchen or entertainment area. Each room is different and comes with its own tiled bathroom, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, Wi-Fi and flat screen TV. room with two queen beds, a lounge, closet, full fridge and dining area. Stay in their vibrant “green room” with subtle turquoise and brown accented furniture, darkwood floors and a reading area. Or choose their quaint, queen-bed room and soak in the relaxing, pristine bathtub. Mike Crego and Jim Jozefowicz are truly committed to the enchanting paradise they built in Wilton Manors. They live onsite and are available to their guests 24/7. They ensure that each visitor receives quality service and are completely comfortable during their stay. “You have to be passionate about it,” Crego said. “It’s been three and half years and we’re still happy.” Guests can expect to receive breakfast tray service in their room or by the heated saltwater pool. The pair is more than willing to help each guest plan and execute daily excursions and activities. If you would like theguymag

to head to the beach, Crego and Jozefowicz will gladly arrange a taxi or Uber service as well as provide a beach umbrella, towels and folding chairs with nifty straps for easy carrying. “I pay close attention to my guests’ needs,” Crego said. “It comes from my retail background.” Island Sands Inn has a sister property located two blocks away that offers bigger accommodations for guests that prefer more room or want a longer stay. The four villas are all two-bedroom, one-bath lodgings with a full kitchen, living room and dining area. The gated facility has guest parking, with additional parking for visitors and a heated saltwater pool. All reservations and checkins can be made through the website: islandsandsinn.com. DINING

Moments In Time:

The Best Food, The Best Prices

BY TIM

HART

Up to this point, I had yet to respond to suggestions from others on where to review (although everyone told me to go to Thirteen Restaurant – I went and reviewed it on my own accord). I figure I have about a year’s worth of restaurants I regularly go to that I can review before I needed to start taking requests. This is the first restaurant I have gone to where I was specifically requested to do a review. I mention this because all of the other places I had reviewed I’ve either been to a lot--so I knew they were good; or in the case of Lariano’s and Gi Gi’s, the experience was so special I had to share it with our readers. So going into this review, I was a bit apprehensive as I had never been to the restaurant or heard anything about what to expect. I chose to review lunch and took some colleagues with me. Moments in Time is located on the southeast corner of Oakland Park Blvd and Federal Highway. There is plenty of parking for both lunch and dinner, and it’s a very convenient location. It is an extremely intimate setting. There are a number of hi-tops along the wall and traditional seating in the center with a nice wine bar at the back of the Bistro. There is also seating outside. We were pleasantly greeted by owner and chef Jack Atwell. Jack apologized that due to an illness, he was short staffed and would be doing everything for us. Great for us!!! His hospitality was overwhelming. The lunch menu is simple but includes something for everyone. I ordered the Classic Reuben ($10) while others in my party ordered the Oven Roasted Turkey Breast ($9) and Fresh Albacore Tuna Salad ($9). The sandwiches offer various bread choices and come with fries or chips. Additional menu items include a Lean Roast Beef sandwich ($9) , Cashew Thai Salad ($12) or Triple Grilled Cheese ($12). The Bistro is dedicated to excellence in food quality, preparation and presentation, and I was happy to see that this extended to lunch. Everyone in my party was very pleased with the meal, presentation, quality and above all friendly service. share with us on guymag.net

The dinner menu boasts gourmet, fresh, delicious wine and tapas with a creative menu including: starters - Grilled Vegetable Terrine ($12), Jumbo Shrimp Rockefeller ($15) and Almond Feta with Herb Oil ($15); Tapas – Scallops Provençale ($24), Grilled Sea Bass in Lime Garlic Sauce over sautéed vegetables ($23) and Seared Foie Gras Chocolate Mole and Cherry Sauce ($26). This is a very creative menu indeed. Moments in Time is also one of Florida’s top caterers. They are renowned for imaginative decor, when catering functions both large and small. Whether you are planning a buffet, seated dinner, cocktail party, or fundraiser, they can accommodate you. Moments in Time Catering is also managed by Chef Jack. Since the company opened its doors in 2008, they’ve treated every customer like they were a part of their family. Other companies may offer similar services, but they consider their services the best, and it comes with a personal touch. Their belief is “never settle for less than the best.” All of their creations are made fresh in their kitchen from only the freshest products available. I was speaking to Jack about this and he has a waiting list. If that is not enough, Jack also informed us he has a daily delivery service of healthy meals. Easy, affordable and healthy. One quick note: In looking around the Bistro, I noticed a “Dining Out with Broward House” card. The Bistro was a dining out location!!! I am a supporter of this event and establishment and thought it was great that they were too. I very much enjoyed my first encounter with Moments in Time, and am confident you will too. If going for dinner, please make a reservation as seating is limited and you want to make sure you get the best they have to offer. Ryan Adams Ryan Adams, the ex-member of alternative country band Whiskeytown, has had a prolific and successful solo career. His first albums Heartbreaker and Gold were critical smashes, the latter producing the hit single “New York, New York.” A recent return to form included his latest self-titled album. Those interested in pop cultural gossip may know him as the once-husband of Mandy Moore (they divorced earlier this year). This summer finds Adams not only on tour for himself but also on the festival circuit, performing at Big Guava Music Festival in Tampa, Sasquatch Festival in Washington, and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. 8:00 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

ZZ Top/Jeff Beck The ultimate otters make their way to the South Florida music scene, performing all of the hits at the Hard Rock. Since the 1970s ZZ Top has used their blues rock pedigree to become a highly successful rock band. Legendary singles (and videos) such as “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man” defined the early 1980s (and the MTV generation). A new album entitled La Futura finds the band back in fine form, crafting blues-rock with blue-collar titles such as “I Gotsta Get Paid” and “Consumption.” Jeff Beck was the legendary lead guitarist for the band Yardbirds and has worked with Rod Steward, Brian Wilson, and Mick Jagger. Dapur’s Edi Mulyanto Does Sunday Brunch

RICHARD HACK Edi Mulyanto knows a good thing when he sees it. The creative owner of Dapur Asian Tapas and Lounge was recently in New York where Dim Sum and Bloody Mary bars are all the rage. Seeing an opportunity to refine the concept, Edi transplanted the essence of a do-it-yourself Bloody Mary bar and showcased it at this brand new Sunday Brunch running weekly from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. Edi, of course, is no stranger to successful restaurants with Dapur his latest triumph. Since it first cast open its doors, Dapur has enchanted with its delicate dumplings and extravagant dragon rolls, as well as all things Asian. With a fresh herb and vegetable garden in the rear of the restaurant, it’s easy to see what things taste so fresh. Dapur’s new Sunday brunch is centered around its Omelette and Sushi station. BY

There, the restaurant’s Master Chefs prepare custom made concoctions that are as subtle as they are addicting, tempting you to try exotic as well as tradition recipes. From the same spot at the rear of the eatery, you will also find Dapur’s amazingly fresh Green Papaya Salad along with the established Rujak (which Edi spells Rudjak) Salad—a wonderful blend of fruits and vegetables that is commonly sold by street vendors in Malaysia and Indonesia. Healthy and nutritious. Heading across the room to the steam tables, prepare to delight in Crispy Chicken with Thai Chili Sauce, sliced thin to remind you that there is more food ahead—like piles of Tom Kha Mussels, which presents Prince Edward Mussels in a soup of coconut milk and Thai spices. Dapur is well liked for its famous Pad Thai Noodles, offered here in bulk, theguymag

and mixing rice noodles, vegetables, scallions, bean sprouts, peanuts, and tamarind sauce. You’ll be tempted to fill your plate, but remember there’s still Chicken Fried Rice to taste, along with Congee—a jasmine rice porridge, with ginger, scallion, and chicken; and Chicken Fried Rice. Yum. There are also Roasted Baby Potatoes that Edi shields in a sprinkle of tantalizing Thai spices and Smoked Salmon, far more delicate than traditional Lox, and a whole lot more flavorful as served here. To accompany the feast, there is an array of Breads, Danishes, Croissants and Muffins. While not made in house, these are the kind of tasty carbs that demand seconds (and even thirds). Fortunately, Edi has sized them in nibble mode, to make sampling so much easier. The biggest surprise of all is saved for when you return with filled plates to the elegant dining room seating.

Just as you think you’ve seen all this brunch has to offer, dim sum trolleys begin to circulate the room. Each of the dim sum comes packaged in their own bamboo steam basket, delivered with share with us on guymag.net

flare tableside. There is an unending assortment of Dumplings (shrimp, chicken or vegetable), Shrimp Sui Mai (folded into tiny purses), Chicken Meatballs, Short Ribs, Chicken and Red Bean, Chinese Cake (made with eggs), Steamed Tofu, and Sesame Balls (jian dui), a fried Chinese pastry with assorted fillings. The cost of all this irresistible gluttony is $22.95. Unlimited trips to the Bloody Mary bar (along with bottomless Mimosas and Sangria) is $14 additional. A bargain for quality food in an elegant setting. And the public agrees. Sunday brunch at Dapur sells out to a packed house each week. What appears to be spontaneous, however, took months of steady development. The dim sum trolley

alone took preplanning. “I went to China Town in New York to find the manufacturer. Each trolley takes a week to make,” Edi says. “It a process. So I ordered five. And the fresh herbs and fruit? “We’re preparing for the summer season now, planting our garden out back and tilling the soil. I’m out there every Sunday morning.” As if his schedule isn’t packed enough, Edi is always looking to the future. “Sunday brunch has been such an incredible success that I’m planning on opening on Saturday for brunch soon.” Will he ever slow down? Edi flashes his cubic zirconia smile, as he rushes to greet an arriving guest. “No problem. I’ve got a twin brother,” Edi kids before disappearing into the crowd.

FITNESS

A Healthy Fat Burning Strategy BY TOM

BONANTI

D

ieting seems to be a global obsession. Surefire supplements, fad diets and fitness gurus everywhere promise sensational, if not unrealistic results in mere weeks, days, and even minutes. Yet according to some recent statistics, we’re fatter than ever. Why? Most of us are a bit delusional when it comes to how much we actually shove into our mouths. If you have put on weight, face the facts. Hop on that scale. Take a good look in the mirror. You’ve picked up extra pounds during the winter doldrums and those love handles simply have to go! Stop making excuses and for the sake of your own health and wellbeing, follow these simple tips and watch the stunning results to come in the weeks ahead! In order to lose weight, you’ve got to have a strategy that includes cardio, weights, and nutritional planning. Instead of thinking “diet” with its negative connotations, come up with an overall approach that includes sticking to sound nutritional principles. Keep a food journal and plan your meals. Doing regular cardio and weight training will help burn calories and get your heart pumping. Get to the gym and ride the recumbent bike or do the Precor twice a week for 20 minutes or so for starters. Lifting even light weights 3 times per week will help build more lean muscle which burns more calories all the time even when you’re at rest.

Don’t try to do too much all at once. It’s unhealthy to lose more than 3 pounds per week unless you are under a doctor’s care. You’ve got to cut calories when you’re reducing, but starving yourself to lose 5 to 10 pounds in one week can result in a catastrophe. Losing weight drastically like this can cause your metabolism to plummet and you’ll lose lean muscle as well as fat. As your metabolism wanes so will your stamina for exercise as well as all other daily activities. Your body will rebel by storing fat more easily. You’ll also damage your heart with this type of radical yo-yo dieting. The same is true with overdoing it in the gym. Work out to fatigue, not failure. Exercise should improve your life, not kill you! No more excuses, get the facts, and do something about it. Whether it’s a slow metabolism, too much time at the office or you’re too tired, you are a master at making excuses. Go online or have a trainer chart your Body Mass Index (BMI) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) so that you know what your weight should be and how many calories you need daily. Change your outlook, believe you can shed those extra pounds and set your priorities accordingly. Think before you eat! Mindless eating can ruin your figure. You grab a few Hershey’s Kisses from your colleagues candy jar because you’re bored. You go to the drive through and chow down on burgers and fries because you’re in a hurry. Unfortunately, such mindless indulgences add up to weighty matters in the end. Drinking makes you fat. People who drink soda consume more calories. Booze isn’t much better. Furthermore, it’s very common to eat more and make poor food choices after you’ve had a few. Cut out the soda. Reign in the boozing and binging. This spring, take off your clothes with pride and be ready to enjoy a healthier outlook in general. Take control and shed those extra pounds now!
