APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION

HAS THE RISE OF THE HOOKUP APP SIGNALED THE END OF ROMANCE AS WE KNOW IT?

T

he dawn of the digital age has signaled the rise of a great many things—none quite as visible as the app-assisted onset of instant love. Add WiFi and stir.

Thanks to the advent of modern technology (and an unending array of dating apps to choose from), any bozo with enough bandwidth can brand himself as a digital Don Juan equipped with photos to share and a limited number of characters worth of smooth talk to reassure any potential gentleman caller that he is, indeed, worth the time of day. It has been estimated that 80 percent of gay men meet their long-term partners while swiping, tapping, and sliding app screens in the hopes of finding Mr. Right, according to a study published in AIDS and Behavior. Aspirations for all vary, but tend to oscillate between wanting a relationship or a hookup. And nothing’s wrong with either. Or both. Online dating is easy, convenient, and fairly painless; however, with all of its benefits comes a handful of sobering drawbacks. The use of dating apps allows you to be anyone you’d like. We’d all like to think that

16

BY DIEGO WYATT

people are being their authentic selves, but one date gone bad is proof positive that people aren’t always who they seem. Who hasn’t been tempted to exaggerate about how fit they are or what types of activities they enjoy? As such, an element of mistrust is already embedded in the skulls of all parties involved before even meeting. Moreover, many guys get their self-esteem wrapped up in how much attention they get through online dating channels. Increased attention can yield an inflated ego and little to no attention can yield the opposite. The latter is enough to knock the wind out of any hopeless romantic who has turned to dating apps to find “the one.” The upswell in online dating, as we know it today, is one of the many byproducts of the millennial generation. In its earliest incarnation, it was often seen as a desperate attempt to find love. Over the years, it has become the new normal. Sure, there are some adorable Match.com commercial-grade couples that found love online, but anyone who has experienced the vicious cycle that is online dating (Log on. Lust. Let down. Repeat.) knows that the struggle to get there is all too real. Has the popularity of online dating signaled the death of romance as we know it? No one can say for sure, but it has undoubtedly signaled a shift in how gay men meet and relate to one another—for better or worse.

BREAKING

TODRICK HALL A STAR IS BORN REBORN

I

f you don’t know who Todrick Hall is, get ready to see his face plastered all over your television screen.

The 30-year-old native Texan and American Idol alum became a YouTube sensation with spirited flash mobs and blushworthy odes to Beyoncé. With a handful of viral videos under his belt, the openly gay singer/ songwriter and choreographer set his sights

onto something that would catapult him into social media stardom: Disney parodies. His cleverly crafted satires poke fun at all of the fictional characters we’ve grown up with. Most also happen to be arranged, produced and performed by Hall himself. Todrick is Hall's MTV series slated to premiere August 31. The docu-series will give fans of the social media titan a chance to see the blood, sweat and tears that go into creating his famed video productions. Something tells us it's going to be a cross between Mission: Impossible and Fame. We can't wait to see how this turns out.

WHITE RUSSIAN

Pavel Petel is an international treasure. Equal parts sass, sex appeal and sexual ambiguity, the striking star has become a social media superstar without leaving his home country of Russia. Beyond the politics and propaganda, Petel is a tastemaker and a dreamer at heart. The international superstar opens up about what life is really like in Russia, coming out and coming to terms with becoming a newly-minted gay icon. BY DIEGO WYATT

When most people think of being openly gay in Russia, some pretty extreme images come to mind. What has life there been like as many countries around the world have started to embrace marriage equality and equal rights? In reality, nothing has changed in Russia. People were hiding their real lives from society before and people are hiding it now. I know many famous people who have success and money, but live as before. They are still hiding that they are gay. It is hard for me to talk about the life of gays in Russia and compare it to other countries of the world, because I have not lived anywhere else. Possibly in Europe or in America things are the same. And maybe it is even worse there.

like I am in danger. It doesn’t work that well for me though. Do you think anti-gay laws in Russia will ever change? Any law can be changed in one day. It all depends on propaganda. I am sure that in Russia everything will be ok some day. The issue is not the law, but the general political propaganda for tolerance—specifically as it relates to gays.

MY LIFE IS CONTINUALLY AT RISK BECAUSE I CHOOSE TO BE WHO I AM.

You’ve become a digital sensation with your bold plays on gender and sexual identity. What inspired you to start dressing up in such fabulous and outlandish looks? I am designer by education. I always am creating and inventing something. This is the way I was born. Back in the days, I played with dolls that I made by hand. Later I turned myself into an art object. All of my projects involve designing. I haven’t done anything special. I have just changed the world through my take on pop culture and the fashion industry.

What are some of the reactions you get in Russia? In Russia, the majority of people are very kind, educated and merry. And they love me. Wherever I go, people recognize me and ask to take pictures with me. But honestly, this all makes me a bit afraid. It is sad, but I don’t have protection or any rights and that’s why I live in fear for my life. I am trying to camouflage myself, because I feel

You have an international fan base, but you have yet to step foot outside of your home country. When can we expect you stateside? I am learning the English language and I am dreaming to visit the US, but I don’t have the money for it right now. I don’t fit in when it comes to official shows and I am forbidden on TV. I can barely make my living and survive as it is. To get a Visa to the US, you must have an official job and money in the bank. I have neither of these. I was refused a Visa to England and Estonia. I am often invited to different occasions but have no way of crossing the borders of these countries. This is very hard for me. Despite your travel limitations, you've managed to inspire a large audience of young people. What is your advice for youth who are struggling with their sexuality and afraid to come out? Honestly, I can’t give them advice. My life is continuously at risk because I choose to be who I am. My art is open and everybody sees that. People want to be happy and live in peace. I live on the front lines of a battlefield and there is a permanent struggle. Nobody would want to repeat it. Struggle bears evilness. Only love and mercy can overcome it.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF PAVEL PETEL

You’ve already broken the Internet with a number of your photos. You are also a well known DJ and performance artist. What do you want to accomplish next? I began my career with the Naked DJs project. It was an innovative club show. I then created Petelshow, a burlesque performance. It was the best club show in the world. The situation with the law in Russia ended the show. The public prosecutors wanted to initiate a criminal case against me and I had lots of threats. I closed that project and created comedy project called I’m Rich Bitch. This was the first humor project of its kind in the world. I created the series on Instagram and became very popular online as comic. I do have one more project. It is called Petel's Alphabet. It's a men’s lifestyle blog. Were your crowds mostly female? In Russia, girls like humor and fashion. Guys are too conservative. My makeup is much better than the Kardashians and girls understand it. My humor is fresh but kind. Tell us about your shop. My main aim and dream is to create a shop called PetelHouse. It

26

is my hope that it will be a shop of celebration and joy. I haven’t seen or heard of anything like that. That’s why my shops must be around the world. I am looking for investors for my project and I’m sure that sooner or later, I will find the right people who will be interested in my unique concept. Do you ever worry about starting so many new projects in your country, as you are such a recognizable figure there? Everything is very difficult at the beginning. The audiences here are very conservative. When I appeared in high heels for the first time, people were negative. They had not seen anything like that before. Lady Gaga didn’t exist yet, and I created this image with a wig and makeup. Gay clubs stopped inviting me. Nobody had seen a drag queen with a beard. You always seem to be ahead of the curve. Who are some of your pop culture influences? It is unbelievably difficult to be ahead of the curve. Where will it lead me? I ask myself this question all of the time. It is not pop culture influencing me. I am influencing pop culture.

PrEP School BY DIEGO WYATT

1

2

PrEP is all about adherence. Translation: one dose won't save your life and missing one dose won't spell disaster.

PrEP does not lead to a mutated, drug-resistant form of HIV. Prior HIV infection is required for this to occur.

4

5

6

There is no scientific evidence supporting the commonly-held notion that the use of PrEP leads people to engage in risky sexual behaviors.

PrEP may reduce your risk of contracting HIV, but it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.

There are side effects. These typically include, but are not limited to: fatigue, diziness, nausea and diarrhea.

3

We haven't figured everything out yet. At present, numerous PrEP research trials and intervention strategies are still underway.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PREP, CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN. 32

Call it what you want, but it doesn't look like preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is going anywhere anytime soon. We did some research to dispel some of the biggest myths about the 'miracle' drug that's got so many people up in arms. Class is in session.

WILTON DRIVE Fort Lauderdale-based alt rock quartet Wilton Drive has managed to craft a carefully constructed sonic ďŹ ngerprint that is unique to them. With a sound boasting dexterous key work, exhilarating string contributions from a violin, a guitar and a ukulele, along with rip-roaring drums, this band will rock you. Literally. WORDS BY DIEGO WYATT PHOTO BY DENNIS DEAN

50

P

aul Bellantoni (vocals and piano), A Girl Named Chuck (vocals, guitar and ukulele), Es Oh (vocals and violin) and Elisa Seda (drums) are Wilton Drive. The Fort Lauderdalebased indie quartet started from a failed band called Not for Nothing and has managed to amass an impressive following over the past seven years. “The foundation of the band is that we all have strong points of view,” says Bellantoni. “We separated and came back to the table and said, ‘How do we make this work?’ Things just started vibing and then it was game time.” The band ditched their former moniker and went for something that hit closer to home: Wilton Drive, a nod to the local Wilton Manors community. Anyone who has seen the band perform live or interacted with them personally can attest to an undeniable synergy. This harmony is made even more special by the fact that each individual member of the band comes to the table with unique sonic influences. “Our backgrounds are so different that it makes it work,” says Bellantoni. “Es Oh’s got a Florence + the Machine, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple kind of thing sprinkled with some PJ Harvey. Chuck has such a classic influence leaning to where the roots of alternative rock came from in her hooks, writing, rhythm, and timbre of her voice. I’ve got the spooky, bluesy piano thing. And then Elisa does everything.” While their varying points of view make for an eclectic sound, they also make for passionate creative exchanges among band members that could sound a lot like organized chaos to an unsuspecting outsider. The band assures it’s merely the creative process running its course coupled with a family-like bond. “I think a lot of it is that we’ve been friends for so long and as much as we enjoy

playing music together, our friendship has always been the most important thing,” explains Chuck. “When there’s a little bit of chaos, we have to remember that and approach things a little differently.” The music business is rifled with stories of bands that break up before breaking through. Indeed, the shelf life of an indie rock outfit today is as evanescent as the career as a reality television star. Somehow, the quartet has managed to make it work. And last. “I love music,” says Chuck. “I’ve been doing this for a really long time and I’ve worked with so many different musicians over the years and I can honestly say that I have the most fun when I’m with these guys as Wilton Drive.” Fun isn’t only had by the band. Over the years, Wilton Drive has developed a devoted following that flocks to each of their unforgettable shows. While a large number of their fans are from Wilton Manors, their music transcends sexual orientation, race, ideology and location. “We don’t only play in Wilton Manors and places of the like,” says Es Oh. “We can’t discount the fact that our fan base came from here, so we love the audience and what they bring. People who identify with our music are from all walks of life.” The band hopes to reach even more diverse audiences with upcoming shows and the release of a five-song EP soon. Despite big plans for the near future, Wilton Drive refuses to forget their roots. “As much as you get frustrated with the town, you can’t not feel at home when you’re there,” laughs Bellantoni. “We’re kind of rusted in at this point.” Wilton Drive is slated to perform at Blend The Femme hosted by DJ Zehno at TSL (The Social Lubricant) Lounge in Miami, on Saturday, August 29 at 10:30pm.

EAT FOR SUCCESS! BY TOM BONANTI

76

W

hat if I told you that there is a way to eat so that you can build muscle, burn fat and maintain the energy of a tiger all at the same time? There are no magic foods or sure fire supplements that can guarantee any of these results, but there is a strategy, a set of principles that can change your body, your health and your life! Whether you are a competitive athlete or a person trying to stay fit in spite of a stressful schedule, there are five basic rules of performance nutrition that you should know. These are brought to you by The International Sport Sciences Association. Keeping these pointers in mind, just about anyone can increase energy, stay healthy and build a gorgeous body! FIVE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER First, always eat at least five times a day. Forget the idea of three square meals with supper being the biggest meal. Instead, eat smaller meals or snacks more frequently throughout the day. This method keeps blood sugar and insulin levels controlled and your energy level will remain steady as the day wears on. Frequent, smaller meals allow the body to utilize protein. This is important for those involved in the muscle building of anaerobic weight training. And finally, fat is not stored by a body that is fed steadily and carefully throughout the day. DO THE MATH Second, in planning each meal, try to figure a calorie ratio of approximately one part fat, two parts protein, and three parts carbohydrate (complex low glycemic index carbs such as whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables). Remember, your body needs carbohydrates for energy. Proteins are required to build and maintain lean muscle tissue. Fats are needed for healthy skin, hair, nerve tissue and the production of important hormones like testosterone. PREPARATION IS KEY Third, when planning meals ask the

question, “What am I going to be doing the next three hours of my life?” The above 3-21 ratio of carbs, protein and fat may need to be adjusted. For example, preparing for a workout or a tennis match would require more carbohydrates than taking a nap. Carbohydrates fuel the body, but too many before bed end up being stored as fat. Try to cut out all saturated and trans fats from your diet. The good fats (omega 3 fatty acids) will come to you from keeping whole grains and lean chicken and fish in you daily diet. IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE Fourth, remember that excess fat cannot be lost efficiently unless a negative calorie balanced diet is maintained over a period of time. This means taking in fewer calories than are needed to stay at the same weight. Yet, lean muscle tissue can only be built on a positive calorie balanced diet. This is why both nutrition and exercise go hand in hand. As a rule of thumb, when trying to lose weight, keep your caloric intake below your BMR (basal metabolic rate) on sedentary days. On active workout days, up your calories to match your increased exercise level. SUPPLEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL Fifth, it is almost impossible to get all of the nutrients the body needs to remain healthy and active from foods alone, especially if you are training or on a diet. Supplementation can help supply the body with the additional nutrients it requires. A multivitamin is a good place to start. Always consult a physician regarding proper vitamins and supplementation.

ICYMI (IN CASE YOU MISSED IT) screen savor BY GREGG SHAPIRO

THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. The tripleDVD set The Midnight Special (TimeLife/ StarVista), taken from Burt Sugarman’s late-night `70s music series, may have three fewer discs than its six-disc predecessor, as well as half the number of performances (nearly 50, instead of nearly 100), but it actually turns out to have even more queer appeal. The newly (officially) out Barry Manilow performs “Mandy” and “It’s A Miracle” in brightly colored glittery tops. The disco craze of the era is well represented by classics such as “If I Can’t Have You” by Yvonne Elliman, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor and “Love To Love You Baby” by Donna Summer and a novelty such as Rick Dees’ “Disco

Duck.” Iconic divas Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin (whose revealing crocheted get-up must be seen to be believed) and Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson all sound great and teen mag faves such as Bay City Rollers may give the vapors to viewers of a certain age. A comedy disc features the late comedian and longtime friend of the gay community Joan Rivers, as well as cross-dressing comic Flip Wilson, Billy Crystal (who would go on to play a gay character on Soap) and groundbreaking comics such as Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Robert Klein, Freddie Prinze, Steve Martin, Red Foxx, David Steinberg and Andy Kaufman, among others.

these characters means we are stuck with Johnson’s goofy facial expressions and the stiff (and not in a good way) Dornan. If posing was acting, then Dornan is Olivier. However, Fifty Shades of Grey deserves respect for condom usage. If ever a movie should come with a Gardisil patch, it’s this HPV cesspool.

Grey surprises Ana at the hardware store where she works. His purchase of cable ties, masking tape and rope makes him a “complete serial killer” in Ana’s eyes, mildly arousing her interest. After they meet for coffee, Grey, who “doesn’t do romance or girlfriends,” advises Ana to steer clear of him. The trouble is that he’s become obsessed with her; sending her expensive gifts. Needless to say, a relationship develops; one that involves paperwork (nondisclosure agreements and such) and a playroom full of restraints, whips and other “toys,” as well as Grey’s post-coital piano playing (it’s a shame he doesn’t play the “organ”). Ana, the 16th in a series of Grey’s submissives, spends most of her time hemming and hawing about taking part in the scenario. Admitting to being “50 shades of f*cked-up,” Grey eventually reveals two key points. He’s the son of a crack whore (no joke!) and that as a teen he became the sub to the dom friend of his adopted mother. Being the first in a series of films with

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. If you insist on seeing Fifty Shades of Grey (Universal/ Focus), be warned. It’s a ghastly, tasteless waste of time and a poor excuse for titillation; more clunky than kinky. When frumpy, klutzy, virginal college student Ana (Dakota Johnson) does sick roommate Kate (Eloise Mumford) the favor of interviewing 27-year-old bossy billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for the school paper, she embarks on a life-changing journey.

In addition to being boring and unerotic, what’s most disappointing and disheartening about Fifty Shades of Grey is that not only was it (badly) directed by a woman, Sam Taylor-Wood, but that the unintentionally funny screenplay adaptation was also written by a woman, Kelly Marcel. Feminists must be disappointed that sisterhood isn’t as powerful as it used to be. The (spanked) bottom line of Fifty Shades of Grey is that sometimes a pencil is just a pencil. Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD bonus features include both the unrated and theatrical versions, the alternate ending, a Fifty Shades Darker “tease,” and a number of featurettes.

Two popular series with prominent queer characters and queer actors, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, are now in their third and seventh (and final) season, respectively. If you want to keep up, get caught up or just have keepsakes of the acclaimed shows, Orange Is the New Black: Season Two (Lionsgate) and Nurse Jackie: Season Six (Lionsgate) are both available on DVD/Blu-ray/Digital HD for your personal collection.
