Game Changer Out soccer star Robbie Rogers on sports homophobia, closeted players and ESPN’s ‘ridiculous’ locker room coverage by
Chris AzzopArdi
Ever since Robbie Rogers came out in early 2013, the soccer player has been intent on changing sports culture the best way he knows how – by being himself. Rogers shares his story in Coming Out to Play, a book co-written with Eric Marcus (Breaking the Surface, co-authored with Greg Louganis) on the LA Galaxy player’s journey from closeted Catholic to barrier breaker. The first openly gay male athlete to win a big-time team pro sports title in the U.S., Rogers talks being “sad” about the lack of out athletes, homophobia in sports and how stories on LGBT-focused locker room behavior set the gay community back.
o
What was the most rewarding thing you learned about yourself while writing this book? I learned a lot about myself writing this, but I don’t know what the most rewarding is. When I wrote about my childhood, and just talking about how closeted I was, how things really scarred me and, obviously, being very afraid to be open with people, I think I learned from all that that I needed to be more open with people and learn from all those experiences. Without working through all those stories and writing all that down, I don’t think I would’ve been as aware of it. So, while I was writing the book, I realized, “Gosh, I need to share things more often with people and talk about things and be open,” which doesn’t come naturally to me. I’m a very shy, quiet person, actually. The most rewarding thing for myself, I think, was to just realize that and try to work on it during this past year, and to continue to work on it. In the book’s prologue, you say, “I’ve been uncomfortable with the shorthand versions of my life that I’ve seen and

read.” What do you hope to clarify? When I came out, there weren’t details: all the struggle, why it took me so long and what was going on behind the scenes in the soccer locker room. And there are a lot of gay men and women around the world who know how tough it is – it’s very difficult to be closeted, and then to open up and be honest with people, and then to come to terms with yourself. So, I just wanted to add all the details of the story and talk about why it was so difficult for me. There were articles written like, “Oh, he’s out, he’s happy, he’s playing, everything’s good,” and it’s like, “No – there’s so much more to the story.” There’s an assumption that men’s sports are not welcoming to LGBT athletes, or even threatened by them. Is this due to the fact that people didn’t know what would happen until someone came out? Yeah, that’s the big thing: People don’t know what’s gonna happen. People are afraid, obviously, that things might change for them. I don’t necessarily think that the majority of athletes are homophobic, but I think there’s that mentality in the locker room. From my experience, all the guys that I heard homophobic things from growing up were the first ones to call me, text me and support me (when I came out). Athletes themselves are not homophobic; the sports culture is. As an out professional soccer player, people are sensitive. They know there’s a gay guy in their locker room and they’re not saying homophobic things. Instead, we’re discussing marriage equality. But when there isn’t an out soccer player – a guy that they know is gay – in the locker room, I’m sure things are being said that are homophobic. Again, I theguymag

SPOTLIGHT know it’s ridiculous for me to say, but it’s not necessarily because (players are) homophobic, but they’re not educated to be sensitive to what they’re saying. Someone might argue that that’s homophobic, but these guys are very loving and supportive of me, and I think if anyone in the locker room did come out, (other players) would be very supportive of them. But it’s that lack of knowledge and education about the LGBT community, and about mental health and just being sensitive to other people, that I think is the issue.
No. I’m the same as everyone else in that locker room. I shower with the guys. I walk around naked. My experience in the locker room is the same as everyone else’s, and I don’t think it’s any different for any of the guys. They don’t act any differently around me. It’s just normal. You said recently that you thought more athletes would come out after you did. No, not just me – but there’s Jason Collins, and there are female athletes who are out, and then Michael. There was a number of athletes, and there was stuff going on around the world. I just thought it was about time more athletes feel comfortable to do it. Maybe it just really shows how the sports culture is just not very accepting to gay men and women being out.
ESPN recently reported on out NFL player Michael Sam’s showering habits, which they’ve since apologized for. What is your opinion on the media’s focus of locker room behavior as it pertains to gay athletes? It’s absolutely ridiculous. I Are you disappointed that know that with (NBA player) more haven’t come out? Jason (Collins) and I, there No, I remember how difwere no issues, but I think ficult it was for me, so I’m not (Photo by JB Lacroix for WireImage) sometimes ESPN or different disappointed in that way. I’m media people get bored and create stories for just surprised. I know what it’s like being on controversy or attention. I think that was one the other side and being supported and havof those. ing people that love me on my team, and I just I’ve only spoken with Michael a few times, think that everyone deserves that. If (closeted but I’m guessing his experience in the locker athletes) could somehow find a way to (be room was like Jason’s and mine, and that the out), they would really have so much support. guys were very supportive and proud to have So, I’m a little sad and a little surprised that an openly gay guy on their team who was people aren’t willing to take that leap, but I’m changing things for the world. I haven’t really not mad. It’s really difficult, and everyone has spoken to Michael about that much; I just to come out at their own pace and at their know from my experience that’s the case, so, own time, and I understand that. I mean, it’s ridiculous when people report that kind of stuff just to create a story to get comDo you know a lot of gay sports players ments on Yahoo or wherever else. That’s not who aren’t out? gonna change things for the better. Uh, I know a few. I don’t think they’re ever gonna come out. What if you were the topic of that report? What would you have thought of Ever? it then? I mean, maybe once they’re done playing, but Honestly? Laughable. I would just be like, “The I just think their lives – I’m not sure. That’s a locker room and my teammates and myself are good question. I don’t know. But I do know on the same page and everything is cool. I ena few. Sometimes people have been living a joy being on the team, and I think they enjoy certain way for a long time and are afraid to having me on the team.” It’s just laughable. make a change. Does this kind of reporting make you cautious about your locker room behavior?

SPOTLIGHT Speak with someone away from your team, your family and your friends – a therapist or someone – to just get those thoughts out. I know that when I kept it inside, it was not very healthy. That’s really the only advice I could give. It’s tough to give advice on that subject. When it comes to efforts being made for sports inclusivity, how far do we still have to go? I think there still needs to be progress, but I think the leagues are changing and the leagues want to have out athletes on their teams so that they can change that perception. But I think there needs to be a bit more work on changing sports culture, because they’re just waiting for athletes to come out, and I think, first, they need to create an environment that’s more accepting. You’re producing a comedy for ABC called Men in Shorts that’s supposedly based on your life. But after reading your book, your story isn’t particularly humorous. In fact, it’s dark, sometimes tragic, and ultimately inspiring. It sounds more like a premium cable drama to me. With that said, how will your life story translate into an ABC sitcom? The show, first off, is just inspired by my life. I have a huge family, and in the show there’s not a big family. And, yes, there’s a gay soccer player and he’s from LA, so there are a lot of similarities, but there are so many differences too. Really what I’m doing is helping the writers in creating characters that are realistic, like, (what it’s like the) first time taking showers with the guys or being open to talking about my boyfriend. We’re trying to teach people through laughter and through comedy, and also talk about the sports world, but from a different point of view, obviously. It’s a total fishout-of-water concept. There are aspects taken from my life, but it’s not based on the book or based on the struggle that I went through. But there will be shower scenes? (Laughs) 100 percent shower scenes. I mean, it’s the locker room, so it has to be realistic!

On Facebook recently, you posted a shirtless photo of you in bed with the book. How aware are you that some people aren’t just interested in you because of soccer? To be totally honest, yeah, I guess I’m starting to notice it more now. I mean, through social media. But when I’m out with friends at dinner or grabbing drinks and people come up to me, I’m oblivious to whether (people are) hitting on me or trying to be nice to me. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference! You say that you didn’t want to be the poster boy for gay athletes, but then you became that. How have you come to terms with being an accidental activist? I know I talk about it in my book, but I came out for selfish reasons – for my happiness. I realized I needed to make a change. My goal wasn’t to be this person that wanted to change sports culture; it was really just to be happy with myself and my family and friends. I didn’t know what the reaction was going to be, and I didn’t realize how big the problem was. When I realized how many people related to my story and struggled growing up, it made me feel ridiculous and selfish. I was seeing what kind of difference I was making in people’s lives. With the book out, I’ve been getting tons of letters from people writing me their story and (telling me) how much they relate to my book. It was those reactions that made me want to embrace that role more. You’ve obviously been instrumental in changing the tide for the LGBT community in many ways. How far do you plan on taking your newfound platform? Good question. At the moment, I’m just living every day as it comes. I don’t think of it that way – I just do what I feel is right. I just think of myself as Robbie. I play soccer, and yes, I’m gay. And I’m happy to be that person. Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. THEATRE
La Cage aux Folles BY
RICHARD HACK
o Just in time for Marriage Equality in Florida, the quintessential feel-good homosexual-meetsheterosexual musical, La Cage aux Folles, begins a month-long run at the always charming Wick Theatre, the perfect house to see this downsized version of the 1983 multi-Tony Award winning Broadway show. The musical, starring Lee Roy Reams (Tony nominated for 42nd Street) and Walter Charles (who comes full circle. Thirty years ago, Charles was in the original Broadway production of La Cage, playing M. Renaud, and was the understudy for star George Hearn). Set in France’s Saint Tropez in an infamous nightclub that showcases Les Cagelles (originally twelve drag queen showgirls, in this version reduced to eight) and its star performer ZsaZsa (Reams). Things gets dicey when Georges (Charles), ZsaZsa’s partner of 20 years and the nightclub’s owner, learns that his son Jean-Michel (Aaron Young)-the resulting issue from a onenight stand with a chorus girl from the Lido—is about to get married to Anne (Christina Laschuk), the daughter of a right-wing and anti-gay politician M. Dindon (Troy J. Stanley). With Dindon and his wife (Angie Radosh) about to come to St. Tropez to meet Jean-Michael’s “parents,” the stage is set for slapstick comedy and some toetapping musical numbers. As ZsaZsa and his alter ego Albin, Reams takes command of a role that is crafted as a showstopper. He flirts, he jokes, and he dons drag like the pro he is, and is altogether convincing and charming as the star of La Cage. Walters, on the other hand, at times struggles with his lines (and there are a lot of them). In many ways, the most thankless of parts in this production, Walters’ Georges still manages to emote the perfect balance between

logic and sentiment. Phil Young, a recent graduate of Penn State’s musical theatre program, is a standout in the role of butler/maid Jacob, who steals every scene from the stars and is totally infectious in what could otherwise be a campy bit part. Les Cagelles features Cameron Benda, Tony d’Alelio (with a beaming smile), Jessica Ernest (a women in disguise as a man in drag), Ashley Klinger (ditto), Ramaad Morris, Jacob Paulson, Stephen Petrovich, and Sam Rohloff. And a more talented group of long-legged, high kicking showgirls would be hard to find. Laschuk and Aaron Young share some authentic chemistry as the young offspring of sometimesembarrassing parents. Laschuk, in particular, has some flawless dance moves, which she makes her own. Jodie Dixon-Mears, playing the self-absorbed restaurateur Jacqueline, brings a pro’s consciousness to the role which provides a essential semi-sanity to the proceedings. Semi-sanity? Well, maybe not so much. Director Norb Joerder staged the production with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and book by Harvey Weinstein. You’ll remember Joerder from his revival of Gypsy with Lanie theguymag
theguymag
Kazan and Annie Get Your Gun with Andrea McArdle. He manages to bring his own zany imprint to a musical that has seen more versions than Mame. The Wick Theatre, that takes its name from owner/executive producer Marilynn Wick, is a lovely space that manages to combine clear sightlines and comfort with excellent sound, and is well on its way to becoming a local treasure, filling a void for regional theatre. The Wick has its own house orchestra batoned by musical director Michael Ursua, with musicians Caryl Fantel, Rupert Ziawinski, Roy Fantel, Douglas Michels, Tom McCormick, Neal Bonsanti, and Jason Pyle. The Wick features luncheon service on some days and many firstnight parties, with a full program of Broadway hits, with Man of La Mancha, Oklahoma, and Dames at Sea on the docket. But before anything else, spare some time to catch La Cage. Like Marriage Equality, the time is right. SCREEN SAVOR
January Jewels BY GREGG SHAPIRO
o
One of the best comedies on the 2014 LGBT film festival circuit, Appropriate Behavior (Parkville Pictures), opening Jan. 16 in South Florida, begs the question, “Why can’t all lesbian comedies be this witty, smart and sexy?” Writer/director/actress Desiree Akhavan has made a queer film that, like Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange, will appeal to audiences from every demographic. Appropriate Behavior begins with a breakup. Shirin (Akhavan) and Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), victims of lesbian bed-death, among other things, have called it quits and Shirin is moving out. High on the list of other things is Shirin’s hesitance to come out to her Persian immigrant mother and father (Anh Duong and Hooman Majd, respectively). Making matters worse is that Shirin, who has a Masters Degree in journalism, isn’t making much of her professional life while competitive and overachieving older brother Ali (Adrian Moayed) and his fiancée Layli (Justine Cotsonas) are taking the medical world by storm. A Brooklyn hipster in training, Shirin finds another living situation with roommates and
44

is hired by druggy Ken (Scott Adsit) to run an after-school filmmaking class for kids. Adding insult to injury, the kids are much younger than the inexperienced Shirin expected. At the (broken) heart of all of it is that Shirin is far from being over Maxine. Through flashbacks, we see their relationship from its clever and comedic commencement to its ugly and cruel end. Beginning with discovering that they have a “hatred of things in common,” as well as being the “same kind of stoned person,” the pair deals with the “dating-animmigrant experience,” “playing the Persian card,” and the (unexpected) fluidity of both women’s sexuality. The writing is consistently hilarious and darkly sexy. The therapy session in the lingerie store and the post-break-up scene where the women run into each other (and their new lovers) owe a debt to Woody Allen. Coming off (and out) like an Iranian Sarah Silverman, Akhavan’s feature length film debut is a triumph, despite an open-ended finale that feels like a bit of a cop-out. But that’s really the only complaint, and it’s a minor one.

Beginning in the turbulent early-to-mid 1960s, around the time of the Baptist church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) receiving his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, Selma focuses on the

historic 1965 Alabama march for civil rights, from Selma to Montgomery. Challenges to King’s man of peace status threaten to disrupt his role as an activist, as well as his home life. Constantly butting heads with President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson), who was more concerned with the Vietnam war, and under the watchful (and ruthless) eye of the FBI, led by notorious closet case J. Edgar Hoover (Dylan Baker), King’s priority is to secure unobstructed voting rights, particularly in the South. But racist Alabama governor George Wallace (Tim Roth) makes it his business to see King fail. King surrounded himself with people from all walks of life dedicated to the cause. Among them was Ralph Abernathy (openly gay actor Colman Domingo), Andrew Young (André Holland), John Lewis (Stephan James), James Bevel (Common), Hosea Williams (Wendell Pierce), openly gay activist and strategist Bayard Rustin (Ruben SantiagoHudson), as well as his devoted wife Coretta (Carmen Ejogo), and countless others. King not only had to overcome the ingrained and undisguised racism of the deep south of the early 1960s, but also the brutal and relentless violence. To its credit, Selma doesn’t shy away from presenting the bloodshed and death onscreen. At a time when issues of race and violence (see Ferguson, Missouri) and civil rights (see same sex marriage in Florida) continue to make headline news, Selma is sure to resonate with audiences. theguymag

John Prine o Hidden gem John Prine has been an American country/folk singer-songwriter since the early 1970s. Although lacking the commercial success of more popular artists, Prine nonetheless has received numerous critical accolades. He is considered one of the most influential songwriters of his generation—artists such as Johnny cash, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, and Joan Baez have all covered his songs. His songs are known for their humorous takes on life and current events. Tonight he will be performing from a discography that includes Storm Windows and Pink Cadillac. 8:00 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE Eighth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

Little Piggies o Is money more important than familial bonds? That’s the premise of Little Piggies, a comedic farce in which a family learns at a birthday party

that the elderly guest of honor is worth over twelve million dollars. The party descends into a disastrous frenzy of greed, and a nice family turns into a murderous band of thieves. The Playgroup is commemorating their fifth anniversary with this hilarious production premiering at the Empire Stage. 8:00 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N. Flagler Drive. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.
Fully Committed o One of the most produced plays in the American regional theatre, Fully Committed revolves around an aspiring actor working as the reservationist at an expensive Manhattan restaurant. This one-act comedy is a tour-de-force performance for John Manzelli. He doesn’t just play the reservationist but also 39 other characters. All of the diners trying to get a reservation will resort to any means in order to secure a spot, including bribes, threats, name-dropping, name-calling, and begging. The play is part of the 2014-2015 Abdo New River Room Theater Series. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Russell Peters o Canadian comedian and actor Russell Peters won a Gemini Award in 2008. He sold out the Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, selling more than 16,000 tickets in two days. His debut comedy album Outsourced aired on Comedy Central and became a popular DVD, especially in his home country. His most famous role yet may be in the notoriously bad 2014 Christmas movie Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. He played Santa. Tonight he brings his hysterical Canadian sensibility to the Hard Rock Live. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.
Well Strung o This very attractive all-male string quartet has played across gayborhoods in America, including a few stints in Provincetown. The members of the group have also played off-Broadway and at the crème de le crème of venues, Carnegie Hall. The beefy classical musicians sing and also do their own renditions of popular Mozart, Vivaldi, Rihanna, Adele, and Lady Gaga songs. Tonight they will be performing and making audiences drool in South Miami. 7:30 p.m. South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. 10950 SW BIG SHOUT OUT 211th St. Cutler Bay. 33189.

La Boheme o The basis for the highly popular Broadway musical Rent, La Boheme follows the love and hopes of a community of Parisian artists. The Palm Beach Opera will be presenting this bittersweet opera composed by Puccini. The opera takes its plot from the Henri Murger novel Scenes de la vie de Boheme—a series of vignettes without any unified plot. The opera pieces together some of the incidents and characters from the novel in order to create a cohesive story. 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

TRAVEL
What’s Hot in 2015? BY RICK KARLIN
o
At the beginning of each year, industries look to see what’s going to be hot in the near future. When it comes to travel, you want to be on the front end of the trend, before places become over-run with tourists and prices get jacked up. These three locales are on the cusp of transforming into GLBT vacation meccas.
Cuba President Obama’s announcement that the U.S. will begin to normalize relations with Cuba could lead to a rush of travelers hoping to experience the island before it becomes yet another destination overrun with chain stores and big corporate hotels. At this time, the only way you can legally visit Cuba as an American citizen is to take a “people to people” cultural exchange tour licensed by the U.S. government. Those tours tend to be expensive with limited itineraries. You can get around that by flying to Cuba from another country in the Caribbean or Mexico. There are a number of tour companies specializing in trips to Cuba. Out Adventures (www.out-adventures.com) offers weeklong packages and Cuba Select Travel (www.cubaselecttravel.com) is a British tour company, based in Havana, providing travel and tour arrangements in Cuba. Purple Roofs (www.purpleroofs.com), the organization of gay-owned and gay friendly accommodations, has a number of listings in small B&Bs and inns. Accommodations and services in Cuba are basic to say the least, so don’t go expecting luxury. Life for GLBT people has improved, thanks in part to Mariela Castro, daughter of current president Raul Castro and niece of Fidel. However, public displays of affection are frowned upon in this region among all travelers, so discretion is the key. While there is still a significant underground gay scene, Havana in particular has become more open with hundreds of gay men hanging out by the seawall at Malecon and 23rd. Bars and clubs are mixed, but many are predominantly gay at

least one night a week. The exact nights and places change, so talk to locals for the best information.
Milan The Milan Expo (www.expo2015.org) opens in May and during its six month run it is expected to draw 20 million visitors. In addition, Milan’s famous opera house, La Scala, normally closed in the summer, will host performances daily during the Expo. So, while it’s not a new destination, it will draw more visitors to the finance center and fashion capitol of Italy. The gay scene in Milan is vibrant, and there are gorgeous men everywhere--many of them not models! Signs of affection such as holding hands, hugging in the street and kissing cheek to cheek are perfectly acceptable. Via Sammartini has a few gay bars, a gay sauna and a sex shop, but otherwise the community is scattered throughout the city. To enter many adult GLBT venues, you’ll need an Arcigay UNO Club Card. The card is available from any participating venue for ¤8 with a photo ID. Among some of the more popular clubs are; Afterline (Via Sammartini 25, 39 2 3651 9232), a dance club that has been a fixture for more than 40 years, and L’elephant (Via Melzo 22, 39 2 2951 8768), one of the city’s most popular clubs with drag shows, dining and “Bing-Gay.” Depot Milano (Via dei Valtorta 19, 39 2 2897 0999) is a leather bar, while Company Club (Via Privata Benadir 14, 39 2 287 0295), is popular with bears, chubs and their admirers. theguymag

The Catskills, NY In the ‘50s and early ’60,s the Catskills was the summer vacation spot for Jewish New Yorkers, and in the ‘70s hippies took over (Woodstock isn’t that far away). However, if your only references for the Catskills are the movie “Dirty Dancing” and “Woodstock” you are way behind the times. After a failed attempt to make it a Vegas style casino area, it has become the spot for hip travelers looking for a quick escape. Since the legalization of gay marriage in New York, it has also become a popular spot for same sex couples to tie the knot. One of the most popular towns for the GLBT community is Roxbury. In 2004, a gay couple, Greg Henderson and Joseph Massa, renovated the Roxbury Motel (2258 County Rd. 41, 607326-7200, www.theroxburymotel.com) and have recently added nine new suites, each paying tribute to popular 60s and 70s TV shows and movie. The motel led to more development, such as Public (2318 County Rd. 41, share with us on guymag.net
607-326-4026, www. publicrestaurant-roxbury.com) a lesbianowned farm-to-table restaurant. Don’t plan late nights, as most of Roxbury rolls up the sidewalks by 10 p.m. However, there’s plenty to do during the day. Hike at Kaaterskill Falls, sun at the man-made beach or ride the highest zip-line in North America. Visit nearby trés gay Sullivan County (70% of the businesses in Narrowsburg Village are gay owned), home to the site of the legendary Woodstock Music Festival. Gay life is vibrant in the area, just not bar and club oriented. To find out what’s happening when you plan to visit, go to www.outinthecatskills.com, www.biggayhudsonvalley.com or the web site for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Center (www.lgbtqcenter.org). In the next two columns, we’ll be taking a look at some other up-and-coming vacation spots that might not be on your radar. theguymag

HEAR ME OUT
Best of 2014 by
Chris AzzopArdi
10. AGAINST ME!, TRANSGENDER DYSPHORIA BLUES o Breaking from the aggressive rock roar of Against Me!’s sixth LP is “Two Coffins,” a whisper among the glorious chaos of Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Its simplicity might standout sonically, but it shares a familiar characteristic: It’s emotionally exposed. The complex Transgender Dysphoria Blues is a powerful breakthrough not just personally for front-woman Laura Jane Grace, but for the entire band. 9. LUCINDA WILLIAMS, DOWN WHERE THE SPIRIT MEETS THE BONE o Demonstrating a rare knack for pulling off a double album, Williams treats every note like it’s her last on Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone. Her songwriting is vivid and life-affirming (see the optimistic “When I Look at the World”); the Americana sound is pure and authentic. This, one of Williams’ greatest, is music that meets the bone, the heart and everything in between. 8. LANA DEL REY, ULTRAVIOLENCE o “If you don’t like it, you can beat it, baby” isn’t just a line from Lana Del Rey’s “Brooklyn Baby,” a song off her third album – it’s a career motto. Withdrawing from the commercialized sound of Born to Die, Del Rey shed the hip-hop image and traded it in for the cinematic elegance heard on songs like “Fucked My Way Up to the Top” and “Old Money,” a cinematic daydream. 7. MIRANDA LAMBERT, PLATINUM o There’s no big move to NYC in Miranda Lambert’s future. On the country singer’s latest, Platinum, her cowboy boots are pressed firmly in Nashville soil. Twanging her way through a clever set of outrageous Dolly-influenced ditties about boobs, illegitimate babies and blonde ambition, and pairing them with sweet moments of quiet reflection (“Hold-
58
ing on to You”), Lambert lathers on another layer of veteran polish. 6. LEE ANN WOMACK, THE WAY I’M LIVIN’ o After a seven-year hiatus, the honeyed twang of Lee Ann Womack returned with _The Way I’m Livin’_, one of the singer’s finest to date. Sticking to the purist form of yesteryear country, the “I Hope You Dance” vocalist taps into the complexities of the human spirit via some of the best-written songs on Music Row. “Send It on Down,” for instance, is a first-person narrative also serving as an affecting prayer for the masses. 5. PERFUME GENIUS, TOO BRIGHT o Shattering the perception that he’s merely a sonic softie, Seattle’s Mike Hadreas summoned his strut for this celebration of life, liberty and the pursuit of homo happiness. Hadreas’ most self-assured release thus far, which has him proclaiming “no family is safe when I sashay,” Too Bright is a musically potent manifesto split between two people: himself, and the person he strives to be. 4. MARIAH CAREY, ME. I AM MARIAH… THE ELUSIVE CHANTEUSE o In a just world, Elusive Chanteuse would have emancipated Mariah Carey back to the top of the charts. Not just because her voice soars higher with every awe-inspiring key change on the gospel stunner “Heavenly (No Ways Tired / Can’t Give Up Now),” but, altogether, the diva hasn’t made an album this consistently sublime in years. The hitworthy “Fantasy” redux “You Don’t Know What to Do” and old-school ballad “Cry.” evoked classic Carey vibes, and even her emotional “One More Try” remake impressed. Nostalgia has rarely sounded so divine. 3. LYKKE LI, I NEVER LEARN o Swedish songstress Lykke Li’s personal low produced a profes-

sional high as she let sadness lead her through a ceaseless parade of crestfallen sentiments: forlorn “Never Gonna Love Again,” the ethereal guitar-driven title track, and the chilly “Silverline.” Cathartic in its own right, Li’s intimate I Never Learn was the year’s greatest outpouring of breakup woe. 2. BEYONCÉ, BEYONCÉ o Bey’s impromptu opus just missed last year’s rankings when it descended from the music gods without warning at the arrival of 2014. From the moralistic “Pretty Hurts” to the bootylicious “Partition,” onto the heartfelt ballad “Heaven,” the icon’s latest creation is the best of her career, a vision so grandiose and avant-garde it evaded radio altogether. A rare evolution for such a megastar, the collection wasn’t just sexually and sonically uninhibited – it was bold on all levels. 1. TAYLOR SWIFT, 1989 o For her fifth album, Taylor Swift put down the guitar, moved to the Big Apple and decided to own the world. Cut to 1989, a sophisticated smack of irresistibility that broke records for all the right reasons, but mostly because no one could shake, shake, shake it off. Self-aware (“Blank Space”), experimental (that’s Imogen Heap working her magic on “Clean”) and uncharacteristically confrontational (“Bad Blood”), the Swift behemoth set a new precedent for pop.

Washboard Abs? No Problem! by Tom
bonanTi
o
No doubt, a chiseled midsection is the crowning achievement of any physique. In addition to looking sleek and sexy, a lean, toned middle is good for maintaining a healthy, pain-free lower back. Did you know that maintaining low belly fat and a flat midsection can also prevent heart disease, colo-rectal cancer and other life threatening conditions associated with obesity? I’m not saying that your abs are the most important muscle group of the body, but as you can see, keeping them healthy is beneficial for many reasons. Why not start the New Year with a renewed resolution to build those washboard abdominals? It’s not that difficult!

Your abdominals are comprised of the transverse abdominus, the rectus abdominus (six pack), and the internal and external obliques. Because your abs are such a large muscle group, you need to train them 3-4 times per week and work them to exhaustion. Four or five good exercises using 3-4 sets of 15 reps should do the trick. For optimal results, the crunch and variations of this movement should be at the heart of every successful ab routine. Avoid commercial devices which promise immediate results, and stick with basic crunches and bent knee leg lifts that you can do on any mat at home, at the office or in the gym. Begin a crunch in a supine position lying on a mat. Place your feet on a bench or exercise ball with your hips and knees flexed at 90 degrees. Rest your arms across your chest, or if you have problems with your neck, simply cradle your neck and your head with your hands. Do not pull on your neck as this will cause stress to the 7 cervical vertebrae. This is the starting position. For proper technique, move the chin to the chest. Pull the rib cage up and over the pelvis. Keep the lower back flat and continue to crunch upward, elbows and chest to the knees. Contract your abs as hard as possible. To make crunches harder, add resistance by clasping a 10 or 15 lb weight to you chest as you crunch. Side crunches, reverse crunches, and crunches over a resistance share with us on guymag.net
theguymag
ball are all great variations on a theme called crunch! Just e-mail me and I can give you a list that goes on and on! While crunches build solid abdominal muscles, you must do cardio in order to melt away fat from your midsection. For starters, try doing cardio (power walking, swimming, elliptical, etc.) for at least half an hour twice per week. Make sure to warm up gradually, then get your heart rate up to about 65 to 80% of your maximum heartrate (220 - your age). Warning! If you haven’t had a checkup or done cardio in a while, see your doctor first! Stellar abs require Spartan nutrition. Cut out all fast foods – they’re loaded with salt, preservatives and saturated fat. Nix all refined sugars, ie. candy, cookies and the like. Sodas are out of the question. Cut back on the booze and you’re sure to see and feel results overnight! Carbohydrates are your friends, especially complex, low glycemic index carbs like fruits, veggies and whole grains. Consume these early in the day to fuel your activities. Eat more protein as the day wears on. Lay off carbs after 6 PM, because these are going to be stored as fat as your body slows down. Eat smaller meals. Avoid monster portions.

BUSINESS PROFILE
David DeBeer
“The Dutchman” Mixes Old World Charm with Modern Real Estate Sense by
Cliff Dunn
Ask David DeBeer to describe the Greater Fort Lauderdale real estate market and he puts it succinctly and without irony: “It’s fabulous.” o The Netherlands-born realtor, with Oakland Park-based Galleria Real Estate Services, has an expertise in the local and international market that is equaled only by his knowledge of the Old World—and those who come from there to make South Florida home. If the sound of the ocean, the feel of sand between your toes, or the quaint luxury of Europe figure in the elements of your dream home, it’s likely that DeBeer has a home to show you. DeBeer, who moved to South Florida 30 years ago, specializes in the high-end real estate market. These luxury properties move, and DeBeer makes it his business to know how to move them. “From Seabreeze to Commercial Boulevard, Galt Ocean Mile, and North Beach Village—Europeans love Fort Lauderdale, they love Wilton Manors,” DeBeer enthuses, with an inherent insight that comes from being native to that Old World. It helps that he speaks four languages. “I am comfortable working with people from overseas share with us on guymag.net

BUSINESS PROFILE who are trying to find the right property or investment in South Florida. Germans, Dutch, French, South Africans, the world over, they love this area.” Born in Amsterdam, DeBeer—who is known far and wide as “The Dutchman,” a neat bit of branding genius I admit—was educated at INHOLLAND University— which is, as the name implies, “in Holland,” Haarlem to be precise (although not to be confused with the New York inner city neighborhood of similar name). But as for those Europeans— “—they love what is being done to the beach,” he adds. Specifically, he means North Beach Village, the Fort Lauderdale beachside real estate that forms the geographic area south of Sunrise and north of Las Olas boulevards. The area, which stretches from the Intracoastal to A1A, has a large selection of examples of Mid-Century Modern Architecture, and they have proven to be hot properties in every sense. “There are over 500 hotel rooms and lots of luxury places, with easy access to Sebastian and the other beaches,” DeBeer notes. With the quintessence of Old World manners, DeBeer explains that the Renaissance underway at North Beach Village is largely the vision of Swedish developer Par Sanda, who spent $80 million to develop the European-style village, purchasing more than three dozen low-rise buildings. Known internationally for its white sand beaches, Greater Fort Lauderdale remains a favorite for European and other international real estate buyers, since the area is—as those of us from here know—an oceanfront paradise that offers plenty of opportunity
“I love it here— and I want everyone to experience what luxury living in South Florida is all about.”

for luxury and leisure. The beaches are among the best in Florida, and the area boasts countless restaurants, lots of entertainment options, and an embarrassment of shopping destinations. Many of the North Beach Village Resort collection includes properties that were formerly independent gay guest resorts, such as the Royal Palm. That LGBTfriendliness remains a hallmark of North Beach Village. “There’s so much to love about it,” DeBeer adds, and he knows first. He put his Euros where his mouth is, purchasing his own slice of Heaven-on-the-Beachfront. Along with North Beach Village, the Dutchman has a soft spot in his heart for the Gayborhood. theguymag
theguymag
“Wilton Manors is my baby,” DeBeer muses, with the fondness of a Dutch uncle (no pun intended). Although the beach gets a lot of the headlines for pricey dwellings, DeBeer has sold more than his share of high-end homes within striking distance of the Gayborhood. “This year, we sold a $1.1 million home on 21st Court, a beautiful property completely renovated by a British fellow. Magnificent home.” Knowing the market is only half the game in real estate. You have to know your “audience.” According to the numbers, Florida is the state with the most foreign buyers, and most international buyers in Florida come from Canada, followed by those from Brazil. During the 12-months that ended last year, international buyers who live outside the United States invested more than $41 billion in the nation’s housing market, according to the National Association of Realtors. Another $41 billion was spent by buyers who had recently moved here from other countries and those with long-term visas. Overseas buyers paid an average of $315,000 per home in 2011, compared with an overall U.S. average of $218,000 per home, according to the NAR. For properties, no matter how luxurious, to appeal to foreign buyers, there’s more to it than having an agent with a trace of an accent. In this competitive market, in this environment, it’s important to have a broker with ties to foreign buyers who are looking to invest. It helps to have a real estate professional who can “speak the language,” if you will. Says DeBeer: “I love it here— and I want everyone to experience what luxury living in South Florida is all about.” That—and another Jeroboam of Dom—is just what the Dutchman ordered. guymagtube
