Hooking Up with Hookup Apps by

Grant James

o

When Joel Simkhai created Grindr in 2009, he claimed it was because “gaydar” wasn’t always reliable. He reinvented the idea of meeting people online by taking it to a more accessible platform – mobile phones. By accessing your phone’s GPS, Simkhai created a network that could present you with other members who are online and near you. While dating websites still thrive, smartphone apps like Grindr have changed the world of hookups forever. While some users use the apps to meet people for “friendships” or “relationships,” the majority of users are really just looking to hook up. With so many recently successful hookup apps, we’ve compiled a list of the best of the best. You know, for your friend or whatever.

Grindr

Grindr is the first majorly successful gay hookup app. Smartphone users still flock to the app because it’s familiar and the users are aplenty. The app has millions of active users from across the world logging on daily in the search for Mr. Right (or Mr. Right Now). The database of users is diverse since the application is so popular, so there’s a little bit of something for everyone. The paid version works fine (usually), but a premium version is available and includes no ads and an endless amount of “nearby” men.

Growlr

Growlr is the hookup app for bears. Whether you’re a bear, a cub, an otter, or a moose (a canadian bear?), Growlr will find the right man for you. Never again will you have to worry about blocking every twink in the tri-county area just to find that burly man you saw last night at Ramrod. Bonus: the teddy bear icon is adorable.

BoyAhoy

BoyAhoy is reminiscent of Grindr, but it goes to a global level in a much different way. You can contact users practically anywhere in the world. The official description says “Discover new friends

16

guymag.net

at a local bar or in Barcelona.” Since all of the users that we saw on the app varied in age, there is a strong possibility that you could land a sugar daddy on an entirely different continent. We would consider Skyping him or something before he flies you out to his mansion in Prague though.

Scruff

Scruff is for men that want a “MAN.” Not quite for bears and not exactly for twinks, this app appears to be for the man with definite masculinity, a fairly toned body, and obviously, a little bit of scruff. At times a bit elitist, the app has a clear “type” of user, and these days with apps, it’s all about the details.

Jack’d

And then we have Jack’d. Recently purchased by the company that owns Manhunt, Jack’d boasts a user database of over 4 million people from around the world. Since Manhunt is one of the biggest hookup sites around, (pulling in a combined 2 million unique visits per day) Jack’d is quickly becoming the next big app. With the free version, you can upload multiple pictures (3 public, 2 private) and filter out any guys you might not be interested in. The app aims to be a social media app, focusing less on just hookups, and more on everything (possibly encompassing hookups?). Since it was recently purchased by the beloved Manhunt, Jack’d might just be giving Grindr a run for their money.

Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess oThe famous and ground-breaking “folk-opera” Porgy and Bess makes its way to South Florida, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. George and Ira Gershwin’s classic opera focuses on the plight of Porgy, a disabled black beggar in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina. He attempts to rescue Bess from Crown, a possessive and abusive lover, and Sportin’ Life, the drug dealer (sounds like a group therapy session I heard at SunServe last weekend). Songs like “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” have solidified this opera into the pantheon of great American musical theater. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

invited to participate, the play is South Florida dinner theater at its finest. The plot revolves around a group of mobsters’ wives attending a “Welcome Home” party for Donna’s husband Rocco “The Regulator” Jr. who was just released from prison. The dinner is catered by Doris’ Italian Market. 7 p.m. Coral Springs Center for the Arts. 2855 Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs, 33065.

Send in the Clowns oDo you like to see abused elephants get cattleprodded into submission? What about a bunch of caged tigers performing tricks while secretly building up enough resentment to one day attack (like poor Roy, and his emotionally scarred lover Siegried)? If that’s not enough excitement, how about watching a bunch of oblivious children smile without any regard for the atrocities committed in order to bring such cutesy animals into their midst? If this kind of malevolent American tradition is your cup of tea, thankfully the Ringlin Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus is coming to town to fulfill your sadistic fantasies. Contortionists, airborne acrobatics, trapeze artists, and high-wire acts attempt to bring a sense of humanity to the spectacle which runs through the weekend. 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Housewives on Stage oFor some reason having to do with watching rich people behave poorly, the gay community has taken a shine to the Real Housewives franchise. Uber-gay channel Bravo! runs the series, after all. The Wicked Real Housewives of the Mob is a play sending up the hit franchise. Purportedly a mock interactive reality show in which the audience is

On the Loose Poundstone oComediennes are a strange lot and maybe none stranger than the hysterical and irreverent Paula Poundstone. So irreverent, even, that she was once prosecuted for committing a lewd act on a 14 year old girl (although the case was dropped) and child endangerment (driving while intoxicated with her own adopted children—that case found her guilty). Either way, Poundstone has had a successful stand-up career, listed as #88 on Comedy Central’s list of the greatest stand-up comics of all time. She’s even been inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame. Catch Poundstone and her observational humor in Delray Beach. 8 p.m. Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. 51 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444. THE WEEK continues on page 36

THE WEEK ____________________ Monday

A Pressure Filled Night oPressure is fun to watch, let’s all admit this to ourselves. There’s nothing better than watching people have a lot on the line, deal with nerves, and then either achieve greatness or falter short. It’s one of the reasons shows like American Idol and America’s Funniest Home Videos are so great. Tonight young conductor Perry So takes the reins for this concert as part of his goal of becoming the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra’s new musical director. With so much on the line, it’ll be fun to watch him sweat. Then we can all judge judge judge how he does in this program of Barber, Britten and Schumann. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

____________________

Rosie O’Donnell Joking Around oWho does the bookings in South Florida? Two of the greatest comediennes of our time performing on the same night? It feels like a conspiracy, but, no, Rosie O’Donnell—gay pioneer, philanthropist, power-lesbian, movie star, ex-bff of Madonna—will be performing at the same time, same night as other famed female comedienne Ms. Paula Poundstone. Both are gay icons to some degree, but Rosie O’Donnell exists on a whole other plane, as one of the greatest gay icons of our time. Whether hosting a familyfriendly talk show or (allegedly) viciously running a failing magazine or singing on Broadway (eek!), Rosie O’Donnell has done it all and probably has a few jokes to tell about it. 7:30 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips o A long time ago in a very faraway America, a little man known as Tiny Tim “Tiptoed Through the Tulips”. His distinctive high falsetto voice was only matched by the one defining instrument that would come to represent musical prowess at its finest: the ukulele. Although Tiny Tim died almost two decades ago, his legacy lives on at the Delray Beach Public Library and tonight’s Ukulele Get Together. Beginners and new learners are welcome to strum and sing with ukulele lovers of all ages. 6 p.m. Delray Beach Public Library. 100 W Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

____________________ ____________________ Sunday 1/12 Wednesday 1/15 Nuts for Tricks oProstitutes can do some crazy things: meth, crack, cocaine, sizzurp, but are they capable of murder? In the courtroom drama “NUTS!” a prostitute is accused of killing one of her tricks. She could be a killer, she could be insane, or she could just have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. Person after person take the stand as their mask of normality gets ripped away, like in that crazy scene from “A Few Good Men.” Gilbert Lenchus directs local actors in this suspenseful drama. 2 p.m. Down in Front Theater Company. 6501 W Sunrise Boulevard, Plantation, 33313.

Bird Flu Part II oOn the heels of such brutal stories as The Gopher Grenade and The Caterpillar Calvary comes playwright Carter W. Lewis’ latest serio-comedic work The Hummingbird Wars. A soldier returning home from the war in Afghanistan must deal with a myriad of middle-class problems such as downsizing and health insurance gauging. The soldier finds that the safety and security he so expects has been replaced with a sense of American ennui. 7:30 p.m. Arts Garage. 180 NE First St, Delray Beach, 33444.

TRAVEL

LGBT Travel Trends by

Rick Karlin

o

Maybe it’s an early influence of watching “The Wizard of Oz” and seeing Dorothy leave drab Kansas for fabulous Oz that gave us all wanderlust. Community Market & Insights (CMI) recently released its annual LGBT Travel Survey and nearly 40% of the LGBT community took an extended vacation (that’s five days or longer) last year. Now in its 18th year of tracking the trends, travel patterns, brand recognition and destination rankings of the LGBT community, the results of this year’s study reveal that though gay men and lesbians may prefer different destinations, we all love to travel. CMI surveyed thousands of readers of LGBT media outlets from across the United States during its study and the results were presented at CMI’s 14th Conference on LGBT Tourism & Hospitality in Fort Lauderdale in December. For both men and women, Pride remains the top LGBT event influencing travel plans. After that things change based upon gender. For men, the remaining travel draws include bear community events, LGBT cultural, arts or film festivals, LGBT themed events (such as “Gay Days” in Orlando), meetings of LGBT professional associations, leather community events, circuit parties and dances and sports tournaments round out the list. After Pride, lesbians are more apt to travel for lesbian community events followed by women’s events that are not lesbian-specific. Those draws are closely followed by LGBT cultural, arts and film festivals. LGBT professional association meetings, LBGT themed events and dance parties sit squarely in the middle of the draws for women as well as men. After that the most significant difference is that more lesbians seek out LGBT family events. When asked to pick their “travel style”, there are significant gender diferences. Gay and bisexual men are far more likely to describe themselves as “urban core” travelers, while lesbian and bisexual women favor outdoor adventures. One thing that both agree on is seeking warm weather destinations. One way to enjoy those warm climates is on a cruise, which are most popular among men 45-64 years old. This may be influenced by the fact that many cruises are only affordable to those who are more established in their careers. The preferred mainstream cruise lines are Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Holland America. Among LGBT cruise companies, Atlantis was preferred by men and Olivia by women. Men as “urban core” travelers is strongly

46

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

reflected in the top ten vacation travel destinations for gay men (in descending order of popularity); New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles/West Hollywood, Washington D.C., Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors, Palm Springs, Orlando, San Diego, Boston/Provincetown, and Miami/South Beach. Lesbians also prefer New York City and San Francisco, then Las Vegas and Chicago switch positions. The rest of the list is similar, with the exception that Seattle knocks out the South Florida locations. Internationally, the top locations are England, France, Mexico (with Puerto Vallarta named most specifically), Spain, Germany and Italy. Canada comes up next, with the most popular cities being Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. After that, in keeping with the preference for warm weather, respondents indicated “any Caribbean island.” 2013 saw modest increases in LGBT leisure travel over the previous year (a 5% increase). However, the trend towards a decrease in business travel continues from recent years. When asked to write in their answer, “Which hotel group or brand has done the best job outreaching to the LGBT community over the past year?” Hilton was the number one large brand hotel group, while Kimpton won the title among boutique brands. Both brands have corporate divisions devoted to promoting LGBT travel. When selecting a hotel, free WiFi is a major motivator for more than 70% of LGBT community members. That reflects other findings; more than 75% of LGBT consumers under age 45 use their mobile devices for travel information. And among those who use their mobile devices, more than 80% are using them to find local restaurants, and nearly 60% use mobile devices to research local attractions. There are no clear favorite same-sex honeymoon destinations. Responses varied widely across the United States, Canada and Europe. The honeymoon destination with the highest number participants was Hawaii, but that only was 7% of couples. This may improve with Hawaii’s recent recognition of marriage equality. In other ways many LGBT travel trends are not that different from those of mainstream travelers. Older travelers tend to do their research in print media, while younger travelers rely more on the Internet and social media. Rest and relaxation is the main motivator, and everyone seems to be looking for the best value for their dollar.

FITNESS

No More Excuses in 2014 by Tom

Bonanti

You could not have made a finer New Year’s Resolution than to dedicate more time toward achieving a fitter, healthier, more beautiful body. So it’s mid-January, why are you still making excuses to put off going to the gym? Remember, besides making you look better, regular exercise can also prevent obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to these bonuses, many people have found that regular working out can significantly elevate their moods and boost self-esteem. Here are a few commonly held excuses for not exercising and why you need to get over yourself and get to the gym… today!

“I’m too busy to exercise.” What a lame excuse. You make time for those things that matter most – your family, job, social life, etc. Your health is just as important as any of these. Schedule your workouts into your daily activities and stick to it! Get up an hour earlier and take a power walk before going to work. Pack a gym bag and stop at the gym on your way home from the office.Busier and more important people than you find the time regularly to stay fit and healthy.

“Exercise is boring.” Maybe your regimen is what’s boring. Doing the same things every time you hit the gym will produce diminishing results and leave you bored and frustrated for sure. Define your goals, change your workouts, hire a personal trainer to help you come

48

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

up with a new routine. Try yoga, swimming, or any of the classes offered at your gym or community center. Expand your horizons! “I’ll put off exercising until it gets warmer this spring.” So while you procrastinate, you also become fatter and more sedentary and more unhappy with yourself. There’s no time like the present to get up and get moving toward a new healthier lifestyle. Start with one morning power walk or one yoga class after work. You’ll see just how awesome you feel inside and out!

“I can’t exercise because I have aches and pains and health issues.” I never take on a new client without getting a doctor’s clearance. You should never begin a new exercise program before getting a check-up from your doctor or health care professional. Sure, herniated discs, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc. are serious issues, but not impossible to deal with. For the most part, exercise done right can help you build flexibility at the joints and manage the pain of arthritis better than some traditional treatment programs. Regular training with manageable weights, yoga, stretching classes, and low impact aerobic routines have been shown to decrease pain and increase overall fitness levels. As the New Year unfolds, don’t get left behind by friends and co-workers who have already embraced the fitness lifestyle Contact Tom Bonanti at TrainerTomB@aol.com for more inspiration! Visit my gym at 1271 NE 9th Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. or online at www.pumpnincgym.com! Schedule a free consultation today (954) 557-1119.
