Porn Star Christopher Daniels Tells All in New Memoir By Gregg Shapiro

Subtitled “Escorting, Porn and Promiscuity in Las Vegas,” gay porn star/escort, and now writer, Christopher Daniels tells his tale of tail in the memoir Money’s on the Dresser. The book traces his roots from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he was raised in a religiously conservative household, punctuated by homophobic church sermons, where Focus On the Family reading material was part of his family’s library. Daniels knew that he wasn’t meant to stay on the “prairie” and followed his (dancing) feet to ballet school in Connecticut and from there to Oklahoma City, Mississippi and the cruise ships of Royal Caribbean as an entertainer. Before you can say Showgirls, Daniels landed in Las Vegas where he joined the corps of dancers at Bally’s Hotel’s Jubilee. If you want to know how he got from there to porn and escorting, well, you’re just going to have to read his book. In the 1970s, a pair of bestselling books The Happy Hooker by Xaviera Hollander and The Happy Hustler by Grant Tracy Saxon (aka Michael Kearns) titillated readers with details about the world of prostitution, a subject generally considered to be taboo at the tame. Did you read either or both of these books before writing Money’s On the Dresser? I had actually read a couple of Xaviera’s books in high school. I was part of a group of kids and one of the girls in the group lived next door to this couple that were swingers. She would steal porn and dirty magazines from them. She ended up stealing a couple of Xaviera’s books and I remember we would spend Friday nights reading the books in one of my other friend’s rooms [laughs] when I was about 15 years old, I think. You wrote in the introduction about friends encouraging you to write a book. Did you always intend for it to be a memoir, and therefore nonfiction, as opposed to be a fictionalized telling of your experience? I did. When I first came to write a book, I had no idea what I would write about. I never felt qualified to write anything. Then the escorting stuff started happening and the experiences were a little odd, some of them, and they would really stand out. I thought I would try writing about these experiences because I can’t keep going through life and meeting these people and forget

about them, because I will. I started writing them down and what I came up with was this memoir, this collection of stories. With that in mind, how did you go about deciding which experiences to write about, which ones would make for interesting reading material to potential readers? Some of the stories just came pouring out. Some of the stories stood out more in my mind. I have a lot more crazy, weird experiences that have happened. I didn’t include some of them because I felt like they weren’t really going along with the flow of my story, they didn’t quite fit. I could have written a lot more but I chose to stick with what I had. The idea of doing fiction did cross my mind, but I thought, “I just want to write about my experiences, I want it to be true and I want to tell my story.” I really like to be honest about my experiences and how they affected me. For some time you lived and worked in Las Vegas. Would you say that, as a gay man, you felt welcome and safe there? Yes. I recently moved from Vegas. I’m based in L.A. right now, but I go back and forth to Vegas. I still have work there. I’ve always felt safe there. Vegas doesn’t have a huge gay community. It’s not incredibly liberal and progressive in terms of sexuality. But nobody seems to care either. I feel like it’s a working class town and everybody is just doing their own thing. It’s not a gay town at all, but I’ve never felt threatened or that my safety was in jeopardy. You write about your experiences with differentlyabled clients which made me think about writer Mark O’Brien whose story was the basis for the movie The Sessions starring Helen Hunt and John Hawkes. If there was a movie version of Money’s On the Dresser, who would you want to portray you? Oh, God, I have no idea. Who’s the guy who’s in everything gay but says he’s not gay? James Franco? Yeah, I would say him because he’s in everything and he seems to want to do every gay role. I have no interest in him playing my role, but it seems like he’d probably be cast.

As a professional dancer, you know that there tends to be a time limit on how long you can work and put your body through such a rigorous routine. Does the same hold true for being a sex worker? Yes, it does. I have transitioned out of working as a dancer because I was getting to that place where I was having a lot of injuries. Dancers are even more exploited than sex workers. It wasn’t going anywhere and I felt like the amount of work I was putting into it and the sacrifices I was making with my body, it just wasn’t worth it. So I transitioned into this industry. But being a sex worker is the exact same thing. It does have an expiration date. It depends on when you go into it and how you market yourself. I went into it when I was in my late 20s when I still looked twinkish. I worked that and it went pretty well. Then I put on some weight, grew a beard and transitioned into a daddy look. There’s always been a concern in my mind about my body and my health. There’s always that issue. guymag.net

So, have you thought about what you want to do when it comes time for you to retire? Yes, every day [laughs]. I always have a lot of clients in my life who are very concerned, asking “What are you going to do after this?” The truth is that I’ve always had a plan and been very sure of that plan, but I really don’t at this point. I wrote the book so I could maybe add something different to my career. I’m trying different things to make myself employable. I have no idea how long I’ll stay in this industry. I’m still working consistently and I really enjoy what I do. I enjoy the escorting, the dancing, the traveling, the porn; all of it. It’s still going well so I’m going to work it as long as I can. I often hear people complaining that travel just isn’t much fun anymore. Even if you weren’t around during the heyday of airline travel in the ’60 and ‘70s, you’re still aware that flying has gone from being a luxurious experience to just a step or two above riding on a bus full of chickens in some third world country. And, while I’ll concede that travel isn’t as glamorous as it once was, I often observe people making it harder on themselves (and consequently, their fellow passengers). The following are the top ten mistakes I often see people make, as well as tips on how to avoid them.

Not allowing enough time

I used to hate getting to the airport early and having to hang around the airport. I would usually saunter up to the counter just before the final call for boarding. I learned my lesson when I arrived 25 minutes before take-off and was told that my seat was given away. There were no other flights out that night and I had to spend eight hours waiting

for the next one. Now with long lines at TSA and consistently over-booked flights, it’s even more important to leave yourself enough time. Come to the airport prepared with things to do, and use this as uninterrupted time to enjoy a favorite book or on-line game, or as a time to get some work done.

Over-packing

People seldom complain about under packing. Over-packing means you need to sort through things you don’t need to find the one thing you do, not to mention having to haul that stuff around. Also, you will have less room in your bags to bring back things purchased on your trip. Take a page from Coco Chanel who advised that when you are finished dressing, look in the mirror and remove one thing. When you are packing, place everything on a table and try to reduce the amount by one-third. You’d be surprised what you can do without.

Failing to alert your credit card companies that you are traveling

Credit card companies often suspend a card if they see unusual action on it (such as purchases made away from your home town). As much as you appreciate the vigilance against fraud, it can be difficult and time consuming to straighten out the problem. Relying too heavily on hotel websites when picking vacation destinations. The right camera angles and lighting can make hotel rooms look better and larger than they really are and stunning views from the balconies can be added. Check web-sites such as Trip Advisor for unbiased reviews, but be forewarned, some places spend more money on paying people to post positive comments than they do upgrading their facilities. Ask for suggestions on Facebook, talk to a travel planner or call the local tourism bureau.

Relying too much on recommendations from friends and family Sort of The flip side of the tip above. Do they have the same expectations about a vacation experience you do? Are their values the same as yours? They may think a restaurant is great because the portions are large, whereas you are more interested in the quality of the food. Are you open to experiences they would pass on? This is your vacation, not theirs. Supplement recommendations with your own research.

Checking in too often

Roaming and international charges can be expensive, as can Internet access. If possible, tell your co-workers that you will have limited or no phone or Internet access. None of us are as indispensible as we think we are. If you’re going to be checking in throughout the day, why even leave? Remember though, that if you’ve said you won’t have access to social media, don’t check in on Facebook. Provide the contact information for where you will be staying to loved ones and business associates with instruction that you should only be contacted in cases of emergencies.

Packing everything in checked baggage

If you pack essential items, such as medications, toiletries, etc. in checked luggage, and it doesn’t make the flight or goes missing, the results could range from annoying to dangerous. Always pack medication, basic toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry-on.

Traveling with the wrong people

Just because you are friends, doesn’t mean you are good travel buddies. Make certain that your priorities are similar. You may prefer to explore the city on foot, while your friend wants a bus tour. When you travel with someone you spend a lot of uninterrupted time together in unfamiliar and sometimes stressful situations. Before taking a long vacation together, start with a weekend trip to see how you get along.

Being too loyal to an airline

Some folks travel the same airline to accumulate mile for the reward program and sometimes forget to check if airfares are lower with other companies. Some airlines offer amenities (checked lug-

Eating for muscle is just as important as the time you spend in the gym. The breakfast that you eat or skip in the morning has an impact upon the amount of energy you have for your workout. The healthy meals you pack for lunch and your mid-afternoon snacks are essential toward keeping you lean and curbing your appetite away from deadly fast food quick fixes. In a perfect world it would be wonderful to have the time to read labels, count grams of fat, and eliminate junk food. In reality all you can do is your best each day to make sensible choices and realize that the healthier you try to eat, the more all that time in the gym will pay off. Here are a few rules that will help your body building endeavors and keep you healthy and energetic as well. Rule #1: Calories are important, but they’re not everything. Chris Asceto, author of Championship Bodybuilding states that rebuilding muscle broken down by training requires energy – in other words, calories. But many people, including some nutritionists, overestimate the energy needs for gaining mass, encouraging extremely high caloric intakes.

In general, to gain muscle and stay lean, aim for 250 – 320 more calories everyday than your body burns through exercise and normal functioning. Focus upon consuming 1-2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily. Instead of 2-3 monster meals, eat smaller meals more frequently and steadily throughout the day. Rule #2: Eat after training. It’s especially important to eat a protein and carbohydrate rich meal after a butt busting workout. Post training carbs are quickly used by the body for recovery and are less likely to be stored as fat. When these carbs are combined with protein, you’ve got a strong muscle-building combination because carbs help the body to assimilate protein. Rule #3: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in the hours leading up to your workout. This helps you feel full and reduces hunger pangs. During training, drink at least 8 ounces every 15-20. Rule #4: Mass gains vary by individual. Gains will differ from one individual to another depending upon body size, build and level of experience in the gym. Don’t just rely upon the scale. Measure your hips and waist twice a month.
