SCREEN SAVOR

Music to Our Ears by

GreGG Shapiro

o

If you saw (and loved) writer/director John Carney’s 2006 breakthrough film “Once,” about the unlikely romance that develops between an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant, then you’ve probably been waiting for a follow-up that is its equal. “Begin Again” (Weinstein) comes close, but it doesn’t quite make the cut. Down-on-his-luck indie record label founder Dan (“The Normal Heart”’s Mark Ruffalo) hits bottom when he’s dismissed by his business partner Saul (Mos Def) from the company they co-created. His marriage to music journalist Miriam (Catherine Keener), like his steady flow of libations, is on the rocks. His teenage daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) has basically lost respect for him. Across town, Greta (Keira Knightley), a British singer/songwriter, has seen her relationship with boyfriend and songwriting partner Dave (Adam Levine) come apart at the seams as he experienced an unexpected rise in popularity. Reduced to crashing on the couch at her friend and busker Steve (James Corden), Greta plans to return to England. But a chance meeting between Dan and Greta at a live music club, where Steve has invited Greta onstage to sing a song, will have a profound effect on both of their lives that neither of them could have foreseen. Where “Once” felt grounded in gritty reality, “Begin Again” has a New York fairytale (minus the fairies – it’s Manhattan, they couldn’t find one gay character?) quality that borders on the surreal. The environmental recording sessions, for instance, are pure Hollywood. So is Dan’s discovery of his daughter’s previously unrevealed musical talent. Redemption and romantic reunions are part of the soundtrack, as are the infectious tunes (a few of which were co-written by Gregg Alexander and former child-star Danielle Brisebois) sung by some of the cast members. There are parts of “Begin Again” that feel familiar, especially if you’ve watched “Once,” not enough to consider this “Once Again,” but sufficient to make you wonder if Carney is running out of ideas. However, if you are look-

ing for some non-traditional summer entertainment, you’d be wise to start with “Begin Again.” [In theaters July 2, 2014.] The Elton John concert doc “The Million Dollar Piano” (Eagle Vision/Yamaha/Rocket) is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Filmed in 2013 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace’s in Las Vegas (where Elton John has been performing for many years), the concert features 18 songs from the legendary piano man’s career, now in its sixth decade. Backed by long-

time members of his band, including Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson and Ray Cooper, as well as backing vocalists including Tata Vega, the Rocket Man demonstrates why he’s been able to be the concert draw he’s been for all these years. Seated at the titular Million Dollar Piano, a nine-foot Yamaha (introduced by EJ as his “co-star”) equipped with several video screens to identify songs, albums and more, the gay music icon sings and tells stories to the audience. He even gets extra points for a Madonna slam. DVD bonus material includes a “Making The Million Dollar Piano featurette and “Live In Kiev” footage.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese o Thursday nights are notorious on the Drive, what with drink specials at almost every single bar. The best way to cap off a drunken night of foolishness is by enjoying a delicious gourmet grilled cheese at Wilton Drive’s celebrated New York Grilled Cheese. An eclectic array of sandwiches is offered at this trendy eatery, including a SoHo Sweet Cheese (mixing brie, caramelized onions, bacon and berry marmalade) and the famous Blue Buffalo (combining blue jack and American cheddar with buffalo chicken). Each sandwich comes with a delicious tomato bisque dipping sauce/soup. Newly arriving for dessert is the Hell’s Kitchen bread pudding, made fresh with their famous soft bread. 12 p.m. New York Grilled Cheese. 2207 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

TRAVEL: PHILADELPHIA PART I

Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay by

Rick kaRlin

o

After you’re done enjoying the fireworks here on the 4th of July, head up to Philadelphia where the biggest influx of tourists is over and you can enjoy historical sites without tripping over families of out-oftowners. Philadelphia is one of our country’s oldest cities so there’s plenty of history to “get straight” and a few to “get gay” as well. The City of Brotherly Love was the site of some of the nation’s first gay rights pickets, and in 1982 was one of the first cities in the country to pass an anti-gay discrimination law. For history buffs, Philadelphia is full of Colonial heritage. See the Liberty Bell in its new light-filled digs at Liberty Bell Center, on Independence Mall. A short block away is Independence Hall where patriots gathered in 1776 to defy the king of England and where 11 years later, representatives from 12 states shaped the Constitution. A guided tour led by National Park Service rangers includes the original inkstand used to sign the Declaration of Independence; and an original draft of the Constitution. If you want a complete tour of Philly’s historical sites, with lots of background knowledge, sign up for “Philadelphia on Foot” run by Ed Mauger (215-627-8680). A captivating blend of historian and gossip, he’ll lead you on a walking tour to behind-thescenes places and tell true tales that involve everything from 18th-century sex to surgery. Refuel at City Tavern where the founding fathers gathered. It is still a working restaurant where dishes are prepared according to historic recipes and served on Colonial-style dishware by a wait staff in period dress. Try the pepper pot soup and lobster pie. Cap off the evening with “The Lights of Liberty”, an hour-long outdoor sound-and-light show on the cobblestone streets of Society Hill. If you want even more history, plan a day trip out to Valley Forge where General George Washington and his troops endured the difficult winter of 1777-78. It is now a National Historical Park and is less than an hour from Center City.

Now that you’ve got your history straight, let’s talk about how to make your nightlife gay. Gay life (and nightlife) is centered in an area of the city fondly called the Gayborhood, which runs from Chestnut to Pine Streets between 11th and Broad Streets. If Epcot Center had a “GLBT” section, it would look like this. Narrow, tree-lined, cobblestone streets, and brick townhouses and apartment buildings peppered with bookstores, incredible

little storefronts selling trendy furniture, clothing and accessories, coffee shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. Philadelphia isn’t a big city and many of the destinations you’ll want to visit are either in the Gayborhood/Center City or a short walk away. There are a number of good hotels, but when I’m visiting Philly, I always stay at The Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The first skyscraper ever built in Philadelphia and a former bank building is now home to this 600-plusroom hotel and located in the heart of the city. There’s easy access to the Convention Center, Chinatown, the dramatic Academy of Music, and, of course, the Gayborhood. The Gayborhood offers plenty of nightlife options, whether you prefer to sit at a piano bar, chat at a neighborhood pub or dance the night away. Tavern on Camac is a

traditional piano bar with folks singing-along on the first floor, an intimate cabaret on the second and other floors for dancing and private events. iCandy features three floors swarming with men every night. The Bike Stop, which has been around for more than 30 years, is another multi-level club with each floor offering a special focus on leather. U Bar, formerly known as Uncles reinvented itself and now boasts a sleeker look, better lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows. The legendary strong drinks and great beers at reasonable prices remains the same. Voyeur is a popular afterhours club; Knock is a popular restaurant/bar; and there’s always Woody’s, the traditional first stop on any proper night out. FITNESS

Fitness Myths Exposed! by Tom

bonanTi

o

I have been a certified personal trainer for ten years, but I have been working out all my life. In that time I have read a lot, heard a lot, and I’ve seen everything. Everyone has an opinion about how to build the best biceps, how to bulk up, cut up and trim down. Some of this information has proved invaluable and some of it is just plain bull! When I work with clients, I want them to know the truth. Let’s look at some common myths that just may be holding you back, or worse yet, causing you harm.

Myth #1

YOU DON’T NEED TO DO CARDIO. Aerobic fitness is among the most preventative medicines available. While building solid lean muscle is important, cardio vascular fitness is essential, maybe even more important than resistance training. And the best way to “pump up” the lungs and heart is by exercising aerobically. In short, you must do cardio. According to the International Sports Sciences Association, three to four 30-45 minute sessions of cardio per week will definitely help to build cardiovascular fitness. Tabulate your target heart rate (220 minus your age), then try to get your heart rate to within a range of 65 to 85 per cent of that number and keep it there for 20 minutes or so! If you get bored with cardio machines, then find an aerobic sport you like, such as swimming or biking.

Myth #2

NO PAIN, NO GAIN. Only a Neanderthal still believes this old adage. This long running myth can potentially have dangerous effects on your body. There is a difference between real pain and the soreness and discomfort you feel after a great workout. Experiencing pain during any fitness endeavor is a sign that your body is in trouble. Stop what you are doing, check your form, stretch, and drink water. For any pain that persists and worsens over days, you must see your doctor. On the other hand, some muscle soreness can be expected a day or two after a really intense

workout especially after you’ve experienced a lay off. This is called residual muscle soreness. Stretching, rest, massage and contrasting hot and cold showers can help ease this discomfort.

Myth #3

I CAN ONLY GET “BIG” IF I TAKE THE LATEST MOST EXPENSIVE SUPPLEMENTS AND STEROIDS. Just because a prominent body builder is pitching a particular supplement or prohormone in one of the muscle rags, does not mean that you need to use it. You can achieve a fit, healthy and beautiful body if you work hard in the gym, eat healthy and clean, and get enough quality rest between workouts. Testosterone supplementation should be administered and monitored by a physician only.

Myth #4

I NEED TO WORK OUT EVERY DAY. Cumulative micro-trauma is the technical term for overtraining and it is nothing you should take lightly. Weight training every muscle group everyday without proper rest will result in muscle tears, joint pain, gross fatigue and eventually serious injuries. Train each muscle group no more than twice a week for 20 minutes and make sure that muscle group gets 48 to 72 hours rest between training sessions. Take one to two days off from the weights each week, but stay active, do your cardio and eat properly. Contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com. Visit his gym in Ft. Lauderdale. www. pumpnincgym.com.
