INTERVIEW

Judith Light on Being Transparent BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

o

Easily the most talked about new series of the fall 2014 season, Transparent (available through Amazon Prime) is, in a word, triumphant. Series creator Jill Soloway (Afternoon Delight, Six Feet Under and The United States of Tara) has created a show that transcends labels, effortlessly blurring the lines between comedy and drama. The story of Mort (Jeffrey Tambor), a divorced father of three who is in the process of transitioning from male to female, from Mort to Maura, Transparent stars one of the most inspired and brilliant ensemble casts in recent memory, including Amy Landecker, Jay Duplass and Gaby Hoffman, as Maura’s adult children. Tambor is phenomenal in this role of a lifetime. Equally riveting is Judith Light, a familiar face to TV viewers from her years in soap operas, sitcoms and primetime dramas, as Maura’s ex-wife Shelly. Shelly, remarried to Ed (Lawrence Pressman), a man with Alzheimer’s, remains a strong presence in the lives of her dysfunctionally delightful family, and has a way of drawing the viewer’s attention every time she appears on-screen. That’s to the credit of Light, who has undergone what can best be described as her own physical transformation to portray Shelly. I spoke with Ms. Light about the show, her character and her longtime support of the LGBT community in October 2014. Gregg Shapiro: What was it about the character of Shelly Pfefferman that attracted you to playing her in Transparent? Judith Light: I think she’s one of the most fascinating characters that I’ve ever gotten a chance to play. She’s written magnificently. She’s created brilliantly by Jill Soloway. I was going to get to be with my longtime friend Jeffrey Tambor. We were going to get to do this together. I knew about Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass and Gaby Hoffman’s work. I just knew it was going to be an incredible experience. It wasn’t just the character. It was all of those other things. Plus the fact that Amazon Prime had picked it up and they were so supportive. It was really a slam dunk for me. I desperately wanted to play this part. GS: I’m really glad you mentioned Jill. Were you a fan of her work, including Six Feet Under and The United States of Tara, before coming to work on Transparent?

14

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

JL: Oh my, yes! Don’t forget the movie Afternoon Delight! She won best director at Sundance in 2013 for that movie. GS: The first time you appeared on screen as Shelly, I was blown away by what I would describe as the physical transformation that had taken place. More than just slapping on a grey wig and a pair of glasses, your entire body was involved in the becoming the character. Can you please say something about the process you went through to become Shelly? JL: I actually don’t know how to answer that question. It’s funny, Jill and I were talking about this. She asked me, “What happens to you?” I do a lot of homework on a role and Jill and I have talked a lot about this. All of us on the team worked with this woman named Joan Scheckel who worked with us on the emotional connections we all had as a family which is why it feels so much like family when you watch the show. INTERVIEW pened to me in that process where I felt her come through me. I didn’t do a lot of intellectual work on it; I did a lot of more experiential and connection with the other people work on it and she just began to come through as we worked in that process, in that way, doing Joan Scheckel’s work. Also, Jill was always guiding me. She did that with everybody. Something was happening and I don’t even know how to define it. Thank you for noticing! GS: What are the challenges and rewards of playing a Jewish mother? JL: The humor. Oh, my God! I had someone text me the other night who said they had just watched the second episode. [Quoting a line about a carryout] “Who changed the standing order?” [laughs]. Don’t you know that that mother knows how much everything weighs? It doesn’t get any better than that. You have to have brilliant writers to get that. The joy of that is so special. This is a basis of where this family comes from. There is so much love and support and connection. But there is also this kind of…when someone chooses to become so incredibly authentic and courageous, what does this family do with that? (These) people are incredibly expressive. But they are also, in their own very interesting ways, they are very scared of what happens when Maura throws this curve ball to the family. Being a Jewish family, they deal with it in very particular ways. GS: As you mentioned, the humor makes something so difficult much easier to experience and to bear. JL: Exactly! Also, because there’s so much heart, and there’s so much heart and humor in the Jewish community, you see the physicality we have with each other. We’re not afraid to grab each other, hug each other, kiss each other, touch each other. I think you see this heart connection. GS: Speaking of connections, you have a longstanding supportive and wonderful relationship with the LGBT community. Was that another reason you wanted to become involved with this project? JL: Very, very much. When Jill and I had

this 45 minute Skype call, we talked about the show, we talked about my longtime connection with Jeffrey and how much we liked each other’s work. But the real conversation about our LGBTQ activism was so important to why I wanted to do this. I’ve been on Broadway for the last four years and I’ve not been in California. I’ve been choosing my television projects very judiciously and carefully. I said to my longtime manager of 34 years that this would bring me back to California. This is the one; because Jill was talking about it. Before every rehearsal and every reading, we would talk about how grateful we are to get to be able to show this kind of story and how grateful we felt to Amazon Prime for being willing to do this story – their level of support. This has the opportunity to change the culture in exponential ways. To start removing the levels we have in the world in very powerful ways, in dramatic, humorous, deeply connected, fabulous ways. We talk about how the gay community has educated the world and shown the world about sexuality. It’s the transgender community that is educating the world about gender identity and gender fluidity. It’s something we don’t talk about and as a society we don’t know about. I’ve been on the board of the Point Foundation, which gives scholarships to LGBTQ youth who are marginalized because of their sexuality, and we have a very high percentage of trans youth who we give scholarships to. They have educated us about this very issue. This is going to be something that will take us into the next arena. I think it’s the next step in understanding ourselves as human beings and ridding the world of bigotry. theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Michael Driscoll Brains, Beauty, and Baseball by

Cliff Dunn

o South Florida native Michael Driscoll lives by three words: “I’ll have another.” The fun and funloving barman from Bill’s Filling Station and Alibi Wilton Manors has a winning smile and a way with words that keeps him from getting into too much trouble. Although the boyish and entertaining Driscoll, 26, has always played for one team (he’s straight— cue the sad strings), he does admit to recently switching sports. “I used to love baseball—I still do, of course,” the tall, dark, and— well, you know—bartender offers. “But now I’m all about golf.” Okay, but back to the Great American Pastime. Driscoll, a native of Miami-Dade County, went to St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he helmed the school’s successful baseball team from the mound. A pitcher, naturally. After working at the now-defunct Opium in the Seminole Hard Rock as a barback and bartender (“mostly hustling,” he says, but not like you think, or hope), Driscoll took his talents to the Gayborhood. Among his favorite actors, the Irish Driscoll lists the very Italian Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, the late James Gandolfini, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Oh, and Brad Pitt. His movie hit list includes “old school gangster” fare: “Casino,” “Goodfellas,” “Scarface,” and the “Godfather” films. “But not ‘Part III,’” Driscoll insists. “Make sure you put that in there.” (He did promise to give the movie another sitting after a strong endorsement from this writer.) Driscoll says that among the greatest influences on his life was his grandfather, James, whose people came to the United States from County Cork, Ireland. “My grandfather used to say, ‘Who’s got it better than us?’” Driscoll remembers with fondness. As for his plans for the future, Driscoll jokes that five years from

(Facebook)

now, he plans to have “fathered four or five kids from three or four different women.” More seriously, he says that he would like to remain in the hospitality industry. “It doesn’t matter—a nightclub, a strip club, sports bar, I love working with people and I love what I get back from my regulars and from guests I’ve never met,” Driscoll says. He says that he loves working

theguymag

in the Gayborhood, and enjoys the happy hour customers with whom he gets to engage most days. Driscoll having recently moved from Hollywood to Wilton Manors (just a few blocks from Alibi and Bill’s), I inquire if he has given any thought about changing his fielding game—say, going from “pitcher” to “catcher.” Unphased, Driscoll offers that some days we’re all the pitcher and the catcher. That’s cold comfort from a such a warm smile.

INTERVIEW

A Comeback to Cherish

Lisa Kudrow on Valerie’s return, ‘superhuman’ gays and the future of Romy and Michele BY

CHRIS AZZOPARDI

o

Ten years without our favorite cupcakewearing gonzo, Valerie Cherish, is 10 years too long. But the wait’s over. You were heard. A decade after The Comeback first premiered, the hilariously cringe-y HBO trailblazer that lasted just one season in 2005 – and starred Lisa Kudrow as Val, a D-lister reaching for (everything underneath) the stars – returns to the network with the

Friends actress back as our beloved hot mess. Lisa, you don’t know how tempting it is to say “hello” three times to you right now. How often do people quote Valerie in your presence? And how often are they gay men? (Laughs) Frequently and frequently. You know who the next group is after gay men? College students.

Are you surprised by that? I was surprised… until I got used to it! But it’s fantastic. That’s really thrilling, and then it struck me: “Well, of course! They grew up with Housewives of everywhere, and people humiliating themselves on reality TV.” When The Comeback first came out, I think that gay men were the only ones who were like, “Yes. I understand. I get it. It’s great, and I understand.” (Laughs) You know, those are the people I care about the most – the people who really loved the show. That was my only fear after it was all done. Doing it, writing it, shooting it, it was, “Yeah, this is right, this is right.” Then afterwards, “Uh oh, what if it’s not?” When it comes to Valerie Cherish, what is it about her exactly that we gay men are so drawn to? I’ve been asking myself that too – not cause it’s a mystery, but I wonder why. I was watching Will & Grace once and there was this hilarious episode where Karen’s at a theater and she throws her flask and it hits someone in the head, and there’s this joke that gay men wouldn’t care because, becaus “Eh, all in a day.” (Laughs) Getting, like,

INTERVIEW smacked with something is “all in a day.” So I wonder if that’s what it is – because Valerie gets, you know, humiliated – or humiliates herself – all the time. And it’s like, “Yeah, well, that’s the world.” The other thing that I love about Valerie is, “All right, someone said something not nice, but you know what, can’t use that. Got this other thing I gotta do.” She just ignores that that happened and keeps going.

That’s what it is too: She perseveres. Completely perseveres! You can agree with her goal or not, but she’s got it and nothing is getting in her way. There’s something admirable about that; there just is. Except, you know, she’s willing to put up with a lot. When was it first apparent to you that gays were on board with The Comeback? Did you know instantly? Yeah, pretty much. (The Comeback co-creator) Michael Patrick King said, “You understand how this will go: First it’s gonna be the gays, then the women, then everyone else.” RuPaul makes a cameo in the pilot episode… I know. Oh my god – so good! This means that Valerie could appear as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, right? You know, I’ve been asked to, but I don’t know how Valerie works on a talk show or as a judge. I don’t know. I’m thinking about it. I’m trying to figure out how it works. I don’t wanna say no! And you obviously shouldn’t. All I’m saying is that I see many opportunities for you to say, “Note to self: I don’t need to see that!” (Laughs) But she could say all kinds of – I don’t know what we’re allowed to (say on Drag Race). I mean, she’s indelicate and gets things wrong and, you know, I don’t know how offensive she’s gonna be. Valerie is surrounded by gays, and so much of your career has been gay adjacent. You did Happy Endings. You turned Meryl Streep into a gay conversion therapist for Web Therapy. And share with us on guymag.net

then, of course, there’s The Comeback. Are you as immersed in the gay community as your career would lead us to believe? Yes and no. The people I work with are gay. I don’t know who I’m going to offend by leaving them out, but I need to say that I think gay men are superior beings in my mind. I do believe that. I would love to hear why. It’s all so tricky. I studied biology and the brains are anatomically different. They just are. There’s a stronger connection with the corpus callosum (in gay men). The two sides of the brain communicate better than a straight man’s, and I think that has to be really important. They’re not women – they’re still men – and women also have thicker corpus callosums, so I think it’s the combination of those qualities that makes them like a superhuman to me. Even more apparent during this season of The Comeback is the inherent commentary on celebrity culture and age and gender discrimination. When it comes to ageism in the industry – the fact that there are so many talented older actresses not getting starring roles – what do you hope The Comeback accomplishes in spotlighting that issue? I don’t know what to say about that. It’s something that just is. I think it’s gonna be a much longer process. I’m really not a revolutionary-type personality, you know what I mean? I’m not the activist type, but mmm, my god. I’m really bad at this – communicating this stuff. But we still… we still… (Laughs) Women still have a different place in our society, and it’s changing slowly but it’s still real slow. Because we’re so interested in the male audience more than the female audience, the requirement for women in entertainment is that she turn men on. That really hasn’t changed much. That’s particularly the focus of the third episode when – spoiler alert – you simulate oral sex on Seth Rogen. Right! And then you have the two (completely naked) girls standing there for an uncomfortably long time.

theguymag

theguymag

43

INTERVIEW Did it feel uncomfortable for you on set? Well, the girls seemed OK. But, you know, (it’s) always just about making sure everyone’s being treated with respect, right? Have you ever experienced the ageism that Val experiences in your own career? Roles you didn’t get because of your age? Not that I know of. I don’t know how to put it, but one of my biggest failings is that I accept things the way they are, and then I just try to adapt. I think it’s incredible people who say, “No, no. It doesn’t have to be this way, though.” It’s like, “Oh. Well, wow.” Have you worked with someone like Valerie Cherish? Yes! These people exist. There were people who were like, “Oh, I think I know who this is,” and the answer is, “You don’t know who this is, because this isn’t one person.” Did you have anyone in mind when you created the character? No, not one person, because it’s an amalgam of people – men and women. What do you have in common with Val? Well, a lot. I think I do have a thing where, if something negative is happening and it’s not serving me, then I’m really not gonna let it in and address it because I gotta keep going. If something’s happening that’s negative, I try to think, “What’s OK about this?” so that I don’t get distracted by having to do something about that. Which is exactly a Val characteristic. Right. And then it’s just exaggerated and heightened in her. Could you ever imagine turning your own life into a reality show? No. (Laughs) The closest I came was doing an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? Do you watch reality shows? Are you a fan at all? I do watch them. They’re so fascinating to me. I like Top Chef, Project Runway– still like that. I watch America’s Next Top Model. And then I watch the Housewives. I watch certain Housewives of places.

44

I am fascinated with the level of criticism young people can handle. I could not have handled it. I think I would’ve shriveled up in a ball, so on one level I really admire the Teflon part of them that’s able to say, “OK. Thank you. Good note.” I constantly try to work against that judgmental part of me, and it’s not (easy), especially when it’s the judgmental part that gives you your sense of humor.

And all this is research for The Comeback, of course. Well, yeah, I can’t really say that. (Laughs) It’s not research, but I am fascinated. I also do have this other theory that, thanks to those Housewives, we finally do have a point of reference for how women behave. We need to. It can’t just be reasonable, good behavior, because that’s how we depict the downtrodden so that no one thinks we’re sexist or racist, so you end up with all of these subgroups in our society that have to be dull. They’re not allowed to have any flaws, otherwise whoever wrote (that depiction) is accused of having bad feelings about them. To theguymag

The Comeback (Courtesy of HBO)

me, that’s when things are finally OK – when everyone’s allowed to have flaws depicted in entertainment.

That is the relationship. But I think by now it’d have to be Romy and Michele Get Divorced Again.

Mira Sorvino recently brought up a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. What are your thoughts on one, and do you think it’ll happen at this point? I have no idea. Robin Schiff wrote and produced Romy and Michele, and we all did get together years ago with a great idea: Romy and Michele Get Married. And yeah, Disney wasn’t interested in it at the time. Now, I don’t know what it would be. My worry is, you know, wouldn’t it involve plastic surgery? (Laughs)

In the spirit of the meta show a la The Comeback, if you could play a version of yourself playing Phoebe from Friends years later, what would that character be like? Well, I did play a version of myself playing Phoebe. (Laughs) Phoebe is a version of myself. Valerie’s a version. And Fiona Wallice (of Web Therapy) is a version. And, well, Michele Weinberger is not a version, I have to say. I don’t know. I have a feeling if Phoebe had to be revisited, she’d be closer to me.

With a sequel like Romy and Michele Get Married, does that mean they end up being lesbian lovers because of the pact they made to marry each other in the original? No, they’re not, but that’s always the other meaning. Because that’s the relationship. share with us on guymag.net

Why do you say that? I don’t know about you, but I don’t wanna see a woman my age saying “floopy,” trying to be cute. No, uh-uh. It’s too Baby Jane. Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. Reach him via his website at www.chris-azzopardi.com. theguymag

Zedd o Russian-German music producer and DJ Zedd has been dominating the electro house genre in the past few years. Songs “Clarity” and “Break Free” have charted well, especially considering their roots in dance club music. He won the Best Dance Recording Grammy at the 56th Grammy Awards for “Clarity.” He produced three songs on Lady Gaga’s Artpop album and teamed up with Ariana Grande for previously mentioned summer hit “Break Free.” He grew up as a classically trained musician, born to two musicians, and seems to have a bright future. 9:00 p.m. James L. Knight Center. 400 SE Second Ave. Miami. 33131.

_________________ Friday 11/7 Carlos Mencia o Comedy Central’s Mind of Mencia was one of the channel’s best known shows. It launched the career of Honduran comedian Carlos Mencia,

who had previously been on a few stand-up specials and The Arsenio Hall Show. Mencia’s own stand-up tackles topics like race relations, immigration, war, capitalism, and family. He explores the difficulty of being a Hispanic actor in a predominantly white showbiz scene. He has also released a few popular CDs in English and Spanish, including Take a Joke America. 8:00 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Juanita’s Statue o The classic Don Juan tale is told with a twist: in a Spanglish speaking land, Juanita escapes lover Ignacios’ father’s wrath by disguising as a man. She then proceeds to seduce both gay men and straight women, who all fall instantly in love with her/him. The play deconstructs the concept of a “Don Juan” in order to create a better, more loving version of the literary archetype. The play is directed by Michael Yawney and performed at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center. 8:00 p.m. Wertheim Performing Arts Center. 10910 SW 17th Street. Miami. 33172.

Primus and the Chocolate Factory o Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory holds a unique place in pop culture history as a lovable kid’s movie with a very dark edge to it. There’s the bizarre boat scene, the gruesome deaths, Willy Wonka’s mischievous grin, and his moralistic punishments (in retrospective, a forerunner to Jigsaw of the Saw films). All this chaos takes place in a magical candy land. Alternative rock band Primus reunited last year in order to create their newest album, Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble—a complete recording of the movie’s soundtrack. They will be performing that album tonight at the Fillmore. 8:00 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

SCREEN SAVOR

When FLIFF Met Sophie BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

o

Described as “a vacation from ordinary film,” the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLiFF), kicks off November 7 and runs through November 23, with screenings at a variety of theaters. For the complete schedule and more information, visit http://www.fliff. com/Films_and_Events. Below are reviews of two LGBT interest films being shown during the festival, as well as a gay favorite general release. Janice Villarosa’s “Shunned” (Silent Voices) is a doc with dramatic affectations, including incorporating a caterpillar/cocoon/ butterfly metaphor, about trans women in the Philippines. Through a variety of interviews, personal and pageant footage, and dramatic re-enactments, “Shunned” pulls back the curtain on the emotional, psychological and physical hardships experienced by male-to-female transsexuals and transgender people. Because there is no word in Tagalog to distinguish between being gay and being trans (a distinction about which the trans women in this doc feel strongly), many of the interview subjects are victims of homophobic violence and abuse. Shocking stories of abuse suffered at the hands family members and strangers alike are deeply disturbing. Also be warned that there are graphic images of genital surgery, showing both pre- and post-op results. The problem is that “Shunned” doesn’t really tell us anything new — especially for those of us in the LGBT community. However, mainstream audiences will probably come away from the movie with a greater awareness of some of what trans-folk experience on a daily basis. [Screening on Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale and Nov. 13 at 9 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso in Hollywood.]

escape artist and fraud debunker The Amazing Randi (aka James Randi), keeps us, well, amazed. When Randi says “No matter how smart or well-educated you are, you can be deceived,” little does he realize how much that applies to him as well. Once considered the heir to Houdini’s legacy, nowadays at 86, you are more likely to see The Amazing Randi giving a TED Talk than freeing himself from a straitjacket and shackles. Randi, a man who devoted his entire life to using the tools of deception to uncover real deception – ranging from psychics such as Uri Geller to faith healers such as Peter Popoff – became an unwitting victim of deception. The recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, Randi created his own sensation with “The Carlos Hoax,” a false channeler portrayed by his life-partner, the artist Jose Alvarez, in order to prove how easy it was to fool both the media and the public. But it’s the fooling of Randi, in a situation involving Alvarez and his true identity that is the ultimate act of sleight of hand. Without revealing too much more about it (the element of surprise is essential to magic, after all), suftheguymag

Talk about a labor of love! Inspired by their mutual adoration of and affection for Bette Midler, who helped to revive interest in Sophie Tucker by including her material in her act beginning in the 1970s, writers Susan and Lloyd Ecker have produced the doc The Outrageous Sophie Tucker. Known as “the last of the red-hot mamas,” Tucker’s bawdy act, including music and comedy, launched a 60 year career, from vaudeville to (reluctantly on her part) television. A consummate professional who never took

her fans for granted (she was renowned for writing letters of gratitude to her followers), Tucker performed with the Ziegfeld Follies, worked for William Morris, had countless famous friends, loved to play cards and gamble, had several failed marriages and one son, was a marketing genius with a history of endorsement deals (she made a fortune off her weight alone), always performed with her signature piece – a handkerchief, and worked with the same accompanist, Ted Shapiro, for 46 years! Like any good doc, The Outrageous Sophie Tucker has great insight into its subject and provides viewers with fascinating facts (Tucker performed in blackface early in her career and she was also good friends with Al Capone). The doc even hints at some of Tucker’s post-divorce relationships with female companions. The interview subjects, including family, friends, writers and scholars, as well as Bruce Vilanch, Michael Feinstein, Carol Channing, Shecky Green, Tony Bennett and Barbara Walters (Tucker performed in a nightclub owned by Walters’ father), all have wonderful stories to tell. It’s hard not to watch this doc and wish that someone would do a Sophie Tucker biopic. It has Lea DeLaria’s name written all over it. The only thing that would have made “The Outrageous Sophie Tucker” even better (and more complete) would have been interviews footage with Bette Midler, but that’s a minor quibble. [In theaters Nov. 7.]

TRAVEL

Say HI to Hawaii —Part One BY RICK KARLIN

o

Hawaii is the baby sister of the United States, being the 50th state admitted to the union. “Admitted” is a polite way to say it; the U.S. strong-armed Hawaiians into becoming part of the country for strategic military reasons. Little did the powers that be ever realize that the sleepy little towns that dotted the islands would become one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions. Since tourism is virtually the only industry in the state (except for agriculture — Dole Fruit Company once owned one of the smaller islands), it’s no wonder the people have a reputation for being friendly and hospitable. Whether you prefer to island (or city) hop or stay in one place, Hawaii has much to offer to the GLBT traveler. Some of the island cities offer sun-baked beaches and wild nightlife, while some of the smaller islands and towns offer a chance to commune with nature and chill. Of course, there’s no reason you can’t have both. It all depends on location. In this column, we take a look at Oahu, and in the next Maui, the two islands most popular with many tourists, including GLBT travelers. In the final column, we’ll explore some of the less touristy sections of Hawaii. OAHU Oahu means “the gathering place.” Oahu houses the state capital, Honolulu and the famous beach known as Waikiki. It is the third largest island in size and the first in population, with more than 950,000 people sharing the island’s 600 square miles of mountains and beaches. Travelers will find Oahu’s biggest city, Waikiki, to be the gay hub of the island. There is an exciting nightlife scene with plenty of gay bars and clubs. A number of beaches (Diamond Head Lighthouse Beach, Pipeline Beach and, the most popular, the aptly named Queen’s Beach, across Kalakaua Avenue from the Honolulu Zoo and a few blocks from the popular GLBT hang-out, Hula’s Bar owned by community leaderJack Law) are the center of GLBT life.

Stay

Dine

Ewa Hotel (2555 Cartwright Rd., Honolulu, 808-922-1677) is far from posh, but it is also is one of the few places on Waikiki with rooms starting less than $100 a night. With 92 rooms and a location close to Hula’s Bar and Queen’s Beach, you might be willing to trade a pool (although there is a roof-top sundeck) and luxury for convenience. www. ewahotel.com

Hula Dog (2301 Kuhio Ave. #2, Honolulu, 808-924-7887) is a local delicacy you must experience. Fair warning: for some they are an acquired taste, while for others they are addictive. A Hula Dog is a Polish sausage, slathered with tropical relish (made with coconut, papaya, and banana) baked inside a bun. There’s a second branch downtown (1102 Bishop St., 808-585-8715). www. huladoghawaii.com

Hotel Renew by Aston (129 Paoakalani Ave., Honolulu, 808687-7700) is at the other end of the spectrum, both in terms of price and luxury. The minimalistchic design of its 72-rooms, a glorious pool and proximity to Queen’s Beach and Hula’s make this a popular spot. Loads of extras are included in your stay: daily cocktails, Continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, and the use of beach accessories. www.hotelrenew.com

Rainbow Drive-In (3308 Kanaina Ave., Honolulu, 808-737-0177) is another budget-friendly dining option popular with locals; doling out short-order Hawaiian classics such as saimin noodles, loco moco (a burger, eggs, and gravy over rice) and, of course, Spam. The plate lunch is a great deal, consisting of a main dish (fried chicken, ahi katsu, etc.), two scoops of rice, and either slaw or macaroni salad. www.rainbowdrivein.com

Drink

Hula’ Bar and Lei Stands (in the Waikiki Grand Hotel, 134 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu, 808-923-0669) is the best known and most established GLBT bar in Hawaii. It remains so not only because of its proximity to Queen’s Beach, but also due to its friendly, fun, and smart staff. Two years ago, it revamped its food menu, and now serves delicious Asian and Hawaiian inspired tapas in addition to its popular weekend brunch. Make certain to buy tickets for the popular Saturday-afternoon gay catamaran cruise. www.hulas.com Bacchus (408 Lewers St., Honolulu, 808926-416) tucked away in a second-floor space just off of Kuhio Avenue; this cozy spot offers a well-chosen, sensibly priced list of wines and whiskeys by the glass as well as classic cocktails. Happy hour runs from noon to 8 p.m. daily. The second Sunday of every month Aloha Bears gather here before heading off for a catamaran trip. The gay-owned spot also features a restaurant, but the real draw is the to-die-for ocean view from the patio. www.bacchus-waikiki.com Fusion Waikiki (2260 Kuhio Ave., 808924-2422) is a late night dance club with strippers and drag shows drawing large crowds on weekends. www.fusionwaikiki. com It’s right next door to LoJax (2256 Kuhio Ave., Honolulu, 808-922-1422), a GLBT sports bar and customers tend to flow back and forth. www.lojaxwaikiki.com/ Max’s Gym (438 Hobron La., Honolulu, 808-951-82320) isn’t a bar, but it’s not really much of a gym either. Located on the fourth floor of the Eaton Square shopping center, it’s more of a bathhouse/pick-up spot, especially after the bars close. www.maxsgym.net

Get to the Bottom of Back Pain BY TOM

FITNESS

BONANTI

o

Whether you are an avid fitness enthusiast, a sedentary couch potato, or somewhere in between, chances are you’ve suffered from back pain at some point. In fact, over 80% of Americans struggle with back pain regularly. It is also the number one reason why they miss work. If you’re battling back pain right now, or if you want to avoid it in the future, here are some helpful suggestions. Make sure to check your posture. Over time, poor posture can add strain to muscles and put undue stress on the spine, actually changing its structure. To avoid back injuries, try to stand with your knees slightly bent, and place one foot forward to take pressure off the lower back and reduce back strain. When sitting at the computer, sit up straight, shoulders back, head slightly tilted forward at the neck. Sitting for prolonged periods of time puts up to 40% more pressure on the lower back than standing. If you sit at work most of the day, make sure to get up and stretch and walk around from time to time. Make sure that you have a good chair or better yet, replace your work chair with a firm exercise ball. This will enable you to strengthen important core muscles as you stabilize your back muscles. Not exercising, particularly not doing abdominal exercises, may lead to increased lower back pain. Keep abdominals strong with crunches. Good exercises for back pain prevention include Yoga, Pilates and other trunk or core strengthening activities. Resistance training with moderate weights increases bone density over time, preventing osteopenia and osteoarthritis. Cardiovascular activities such as swimming, walking and cycling are also recommended, along with just about any kind of light to moderate stretching to increase flexibility. Speaking of exercise and working out, back injuries often occur when you try to lift heavy share with us on guymag.net

objects and do so incorrectly. In the gym always use proper form during weight training to avoid muscle strains and sprains. In the yard or home, when you lift heavy objects, bend your knees and use the power of your legs. Keep objects close to your trunk and avoid twisting and jerking your body as you work and lift. Keep your weight under control for back pain prevention. Being overweight, especially in the midsection, shifts your entire center of gravity forward and puts additional strain on your back muscles. Keep abdominal strong and belly fat low. Try to stay within 10 pounds of your ideal weight with exercise and diet to avoid unnecessary back pain. As far as nutrients essential for bone strength, you can’t go wrong with a calcium and Vitamin D supplement. If you don’t think you are getting enough of these two substances in your diet, you may want to consult your doctor. An appropriate supplement for your bone health and protection could save you a lot of pain and expense in the future. Challenge yourself to live an active, healthy lifestyle, avoid being sedentary. Limiting activity as a means of pain management when you’re experiencing back pain can be counterproductive. Activity increases blood flow to the affected area, decreasing inflammation and reducing muscle tension. Stretching and massage should be an important part of every workout program, especially for minimizing muscle soreness and assisting recovery. If pain persists several days, be sure to consult your physician. Contact Tom at trainertomb@aol.com with all of your questions about training, diet, etc. Call today (954) 557-1119 to set up a free consultation.
