Ford Tough

BY GRANT JAMES

From Porn to Pop

q

Silver daddy muscle-god Colton Ford has just released his first full-length music album in nearly four years. “The Way I Am,” featuring Chris Willis and Ultra Naté, was released last week and is now available on iTunes. It includes Colton’s single “Let Me Live Again,” which hit #2 on Billboard earlier this year. We had the opportunity of sitting down with the adult film star turned recording artist to find out more about his career change, the new album and what it was like working with Madonna. Obviously, the media (us included) will ask you from time to time to relive your history in adult entertainment. Has it been difficult to shake this history of adult films while trying to pursue your musical career? Or do you find that it was a stepping stone for you? Well it isn’t something that I ever thought I was going to be able to shake, but I guess it does surprise me from time to time that some people still give it so much attention and weight. It’s there for those who are interested, and the people who aren’t don’t have to bother with it. Simple. It did help me create “Colton Ford” and secure a fan base that I’ve been able to capitalize on and grow from. It is one of those things that’s still a curiosity, and I’ve taken advantage of that as best I could. What made you want to pursue a career in adult entertainment? It was never something I pursued. It just happened. My partner at the time was a big porn star, Blake Harper, and the opportunity was presented to me to do a scene with him. I was 39, my major label days were a thing of the past due to my age, and I was in a place in my life where I was feeling a sense of freedom and exploration. It was an adventure and that’s how I looked at it. The way it unfolded was not something I planned for. You’ve done your share of non-pornographic films. What was it like working with Madonna and Rupert Everett in, “The Next Big Thing?” They were both very cool and kind to me. We hung out and chatted about a bunch of stuff. It was fun! What was the transition like going from adult entertainer to recording artist? They’re both performances, so to speak, so I’m sure it’s all in the same realm...but was it a difficult change to make? Well there was never a transition in my mind. I

had been in the music biz since I got out of high school, writing and performing music all over the place. I had a 10-month period where I did adult films, but during that time I was still creating music as I always had. The only change for me was that I added a very unique performance experience onto my resume. Now on the flip side, what made you want to pursue a career in music? I’ve been singing and performing all of my life. It’s just been something that I’ve always done. When I got out of high school, while I was going to college, I was performing, recording, acting, doing jingle work. I stopped school after 2 years and focused my attention and energy on a career in music and entertainment. What’s your favorite thing about recording and being in the studio? The whole process really. From getting a track and coming up with a topline (lyrics and melody), to recording the vocals, to getting it mixed and released and then creating something visual in the way of a music video! Very cool to create all that from nothing and watch it evolve and unfold. And I love the whole collaborative experience! The only part of the process that I don’t necessarily like, but deal with (as do all recording artists), is the time it takes to get a finished product released. It feels like forever. You have to be patient with the process or you’ll go crazy!! I read that you performed with Cyndi Lauper. What was that like? Ít’s every gay man’s dream. Amazing! I was featured in her video for “Into the Nightlife” and then opened up her True Colors Tour in select cities. It was all that and a bag o’ chips, and she was everything I thought she would be! Sweet, kind, generous, with a limitless amount of energy!! She’s the real deal. What can fans expect from your new album? A complete musical journey from beginning to end, covering a wide variety of musical genres. Electronica, pop, house, r&b, jazz and funk. Even two ballads! All the stuff that gets me going. And my collaborators are some of the hottest cats in the biz: WAWA, Nervo, Chris Willis, Ultra Nate, Redtop, Chris Castagno, Count De Money, Razor N Guido, Fagault & Marina, Ray Isaac and Ron Schrader. Yup. Think that’s everyone!

If you’re trying to do something a little bit different, this might be right up your alley. 6 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Beach Day oFlorida-native trio Beach Day is the next big thing to come out of the tri-county area. Their music has been featured in TV commercials for Lenscrafters as well as a summer swimsuit campaign for Victoria’s Secret. Maybe it’s their sunny disposition, their feel-good vibes. Or, maybe it’s because their music is fresh, new and ridiculously uplifting. Whatever the reason, they’ve gone from zero to 60 in the blink of an eye. The band has just released their debut LP, “Trip Trap Attack,” to almost universal critical acclaim. See them before they’re selling out arenas! 7:30 p.m. Hollywood Bandshell. Johnson St. and the Hollywood Boardwalk, Hollywood, 33020.

Summer Shorts oSummer kicks off with the hilarious and provocative Summer Shorts Festival with an incredible line-up of scripts written by the country’s best writers including City Theatre National Short Play Competition winners. According to the official site, “Summer Shorts is the most fun 90 minutes you’ll have all summer.” As the event only happens once a year, it’s strongly advised to purchase your tickets now. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Daniel Tosh o Daniel Tosh is crass, offensive and sometimes just plain wild: that’s why we love him. He’s sort of akin to Sarah Silverman or Chelsea Handler – no one group of people is safe. His off-color jokes leave no survivors as he picks apart everyone, himself included. Tosh is most known for his TV show, “Tosh.0,” in which he pokes fun at various viral videos. If you haven’t seen it, think “The Soup,” with less censorship. See the hilarious comedian poke fun at all of the things worth laughing about within our own society. 7 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Erotica & Hot Boricuas o The Manor will be hosting a night of epic proportions. In the main room, Epic Saturdays will be showing their sexy side with a party known as Erotica. In the Noche Latina room, there will be a Puerto Rican pride party, hosted by Viva Mirage. They will be hosting their annual “Hot Boricua” contest, with $300 in cash and prizes. Sounds by DJ Larry Larr. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

TRAVEL

Istanbul--Part II Where Cultures Collide and History Is Made BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

The recent unrest in Taksim Square in Istanbul is currently maintaining an uneasy calm as riot police kept this giant public space in the center of the largest city in Turkey clear of protestors who gathered again last Saturday to throw carnations at the patrol armed with water cannons. The agitation began and ended a rather tense time in the region with the government of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan criticizing the protestors as playing into the hands of Turkey’s enemies. “Who won from these three weeks of protests? The interest rate lobby, Turkey’s enemies,” Erdogan said from a stage emblazoned with his portrait in the Black Sea city of Samsun. “Who lost from these protests?” he continued. “Turkey’s economy, even if to a small extent, tourism lost. They overshadowed and stained Turkey’s image and international power,” he said. Amazingly, for a mostly Muslim nation, gays are, and have traditionally been, accepted. As far back as the 16th century, during the Ottoman Empire, it was a common practice within the large military for warriors to seek the companionship of other warriors. Today, the gay population is centered in the Taksim District of Beyoglu on the European side of Istanbul. Yes, that’s where the protestors are, but they are more interested in the Prime Minister than you. There are many street cafes and clubs in this district whose business has not been hurt at all by the riots within the square. If anything, business has been marginally helped as thousands have pushed into the city. And sandwiched among them is the gay tourist to whom Istanbul has always been a provocative and popular destination. The Love Dance Point (Cumhuriyet Caddesi 349, Beyoglu) has been going strong for over nine years and has become Istanbul’s most popular dance club. There’s a carnival atmosphere here, where any type of dress (or undress) seems to be accepted. The place is managed by the legendary Ismael. His name alone shouts Turkey. The entrance fee when last we looked was 25 Turkish liras—about $13.00. (By the way, that’s the new Turkish lira in guymag.net

circulation since 2005. Avoid even looking in the direction of the larger, old Turkish lira notes which are now worthless, regardless of how many zeros are on the denomination.) Tek Yön (1st fl, Siraselviler Caddesi 63, Beyoglu) is to bears, what Love Dance Point is to twinkies. Featuring Istanbul’s largest dance floor, Tek Yön is full of locals who don’t know their fashion labels and could care less about their fitness. They are real however, which in Istanbul counts for a lot. Tek Yön has a wonderful outside patio garden where smokers and cruisers play “touch Daddy’s private parts.” XLarge Club (Kallavi Sokak 12, Beyoglu) is housed in the former Elhamra Theatre, a beautiful one-time movie palace with an enormous original chandelier still hanging from the ceiling. Half of the fun at the XLarge is to ogle the old architectural details while keeping your gaydar scanning the mixed crowd for the next love-of-your-life. You might actually find him (or her) on the second floor mezzanine, in one of the two supersized beds, one of which actually overlooks the hunks sweating on the dance floor. Expect to find both gay and straight partyphiles here. Great fun is guaranteed. Remember always that Turkey is still a Muslim country. No kissing in public, although linking arms and walking the street is common between straight men here, so who are you to argue. The Turks are a beautiful group of culturally advanced people. Enjoy. theguymag

FITNESS

Fit To The Core!

BY TOM

BONANTI

o

Most fitness professionals have for some time now promoted developing core strength as a foundation for every exercise program. If you have a strong trunk or torso, which is considered your core, you will more safely and successfully achieve your fitness goals. Good core strength is essential for just about every sport from mixed martial arts and swimming, to golf and tennis. A good strong core begins with checking your posture. Stand up straight and tall--keep your shoulders back, don’t slouch, pull your belly button into the spine and lower back. Now and then ask your workout partner, trainer or massage therapist to evaluate your posture honestly. Improving poor posture is like starting a new habit. it takes time and practice, but you’ll catch on if you persevere.Developing the muscles of your core will protect your spine and help prevent back injuries. By the way, back injuries and lower back pain are the main reason why people miss work and workouts! So, which are your core muscles? Your abdominals including your obliques (your sides), upper and lower back (deltoids and rhomboids), hips (gluteals, hip flexors, psoas) outer and inner thighs (abductors and adductors), hamstrings, the pectorals and triceps to some extent, and a whole host of deeper muscles you’ll never see make up your core. Training your core should be an essential part of everyone’s program. Just as maintaining good posture is vital for core strength, so too is maintaining good form

guymag.net

when you are stretching or doing cardio and when you’re pumping iron. What good is it to be able to curl a 100-pound dumbbell if you rock back and forth and throw out your lower back? Review your form with each weight training exercise. Be careful not to rush, jerk or swing your weights. Significant core strength can be achieved simply by doing what you’re already doing--maintaining good form when you’re lifting weights. To focus on the core, start out simply by working out on a Swiss Ball. Exercising on an unstable surface can help develop strength and steadiness in several muscles of the core at once. For example, instead of doing overhead dumbbell presses seated on a bench, steady yourself on a Swiss ball and then perform the exercise. When performing dumbbell flies, situate yourself by lying across the ball and then do the exercise. There are tons of ways to work abdominals on a Swiss ball--crunches, reverse crunches, bent knee leg lifts. Just make sure that your have learned to steady yourself before you add weights to the exercises. Swiss Balls can also come in handy at the office. Throw away your office chair and replace it with one of these, and you’ll be working your core as you work at your desk. Now that I have introduced you to core training you can download different exercises and regimes from the Internet. With a little creativity and hard work, you, too can be hardcore! For more information on core strength contact TrainerTomB@aol. com!
