COVER A former executive with a major financial services company, Nebeker caught the (shutter) bug just after his retirement. “Some days I ask myself how I ever had time to work before!” The photographs in this year’s show include some of the artist’s underwater work as well as studio pieces and work from outdoor shoots. “The underwater work is challenging technically, but when it turns out well, it is really interesting,” says Nebeker. The models in the photographs displayed as part of the exhibit are from both South Florida and the northeast, where Nebeker lives part of the year. “These days, many of my models are referrals from other models or friends, which is great because then they know they can trust you to be professional, which is the only way to be in this business.” Gordon Nebeker can be reached at gan106@ mac.com. Let’s Think, Dance, and Travel! By Alex Vaughn

This was really our first week to truly exercise our brains after that ‘booze cruise’ that was the holidays! Off to The Manor for Trivia Thursday, hosted by Malcolm Neitzey, while VJ Kenny Poole played fun 90s videos and comedy clips. Wellfed and -watered on the $2 Angus Sliders (and the $2 Domestic Drafts), which incidentally last all day, I tested my trivia knowledge (and will have to go back next Diego of Boom week to see if I have improved any). On Friday, the party was at Village Pub, where the crowd was out to celebrate the end of the first full work week of 2013 (and after what felt like months being off), including, among others, spiritual columnist Lee Leo Jones. Saturday brought us the first Pig Dance at Ramrod of the year! This once-a-month event is a time to dance, cruise, and get in touch with your inner piggy self! Don’t knock it till you try it! The music pumped, everyone danced, and of course—in true Ramrod style—there were boys in cages! Carrying on the dancing theme, on Sunday it was off to Boom for the Jackhammer T-Dance. The spacious dance floor was packed with shirtless men dancing to fantastic tunes and enjoying the music of a bygone time that seems to be alive and well in this corner of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. Wednesday was a hump-night of movers and shaker, who descended upon Chill Wine Lounge, the sexy new wine bar next to the Gateway Theater, to toast the return of Richard Gray and his new position as LGBT Marketing Czar for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. a legion of local and national glitterati (like the hunky Wayne Besen) in a complimentary glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres. Also on hand to congratulate Gray were hotelier Jim Durham and his partner Spark, Drew Miller, celebrity photographer Dennis Dean (who told me that life at the gallery at the Royal Palms “is going fantastically”), and Kip Reynolds, from Atlantic Properties International. Brian Neal was there with Guy Magazine Publisher Bobby Blair, who shared a few laughs with Hotspots Publisher Peter Clark. Keith Blackburn with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC), said, “We are thrilled to be here tonight to celebrate the start of a new chapter in LGBT tourism. The GFLGLCC and the CVB have just created a unique position which is strictly for LGBT tourism: we are so pleased to have appointed Richard Gray.” The guest of honor thanked his friends and wellwishers. Gray—a fellow Brit!—gushed, “I am very humbled by the fantastic turnout.” Of his new gig, Gray noted that his “role is the only full time position to be dedicated to LGBT tourism. This is an important step.” Indeed it is!

Aging and Your Diet When Three Meals a Day Are No Longer Enough

It is inevitable. Every day we remain alive, our bodies age. For most of us, that means wrinkles, some fat, and not so few degenerative diseases. Fortunately, many of these diseases can be prevented, if you take the necessary small steps to keep them at bay. Medical studies over the years have taught us that good nutrition is one of the best ways to prevent many of the debilitating and degenerative diseases that can plague us as we age, among them osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. Up to 50% of these diseases and others are caused by improper diet. Knowing these facts makes it imperative that we care about our day-to-day food intake, especially if we want to live a long and healthy life. Believe it or not, older people are the most malnourished of any group in America. This is mainly due to the dulling of the senses as we age. It begins with the sense of smell lessening, which in turn causes our taste buds not to pick up as much flavor. Ultimately food becomes less appealing. Add in some difficulty chewing, heartburn, lactose intolerance, constipation and other digestive problems, and this eating stuff starts to become a real chore. Having fixed incomes or the sudden loss of a partner will also add to less-than-proper nutrition. These situations do not have to be the death of us, especially since fresh fruits and vegetables are some of the most inexpensive items at the grocery store you can buy. During the aging process, muscle mass decreases, mainly due to disuse, and fatty tissue increases from a slowing metabolism. This means cutting back calories as we age gracefully. The average person must cut calories back 10% every decade after he turns 30 years old. People who fail to cut back their calories find that they can put quite a bit of weight on quickly. Extra weight means extra stress on the depleting joints, putting you at risk for other health problems. Mobility of

the joints gives us our independence, which is a big deal as we get older, even if it is just to walk to the grocery store. As your age increases, your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to absorb and use vitamins and minerals decreases. This decrease means there must be an increase in supplementation if you are not eating a well balanced diet. Older people are more likely to need extra essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin E, zinc, potassium and fiber. A daily vitamin with 100% of these ingredients is optimal and most cost effective. As you age, eating will become more pleasurable if it is done at scheduled times, rather than snacking. Make your dinner plate more appealing with foods contrasting in taste, texture, and color. Try setting the table with the good silver and china to make a meal more of an experience in fine dining. If you dislike eating alone, gather some friends around the table and make it more social. Do whatever it takes to make eating pleasurable. Along with your healthy diet, remember to drink plenty of water to wash it down and keep your digestive tract running smoothly. So Fresh and So Clean By Justin Jones Some time ago, I wrote about the importance of cleaning yourself out—douching—before having sex (Guy, August 15, 2012 LOVE JONES, “Anal, Retentive”). I mentioned the process in brief: how long it takes, how onerous it can be. But I never explained the act itself. I never described how it’s done. I never talked about what products to use or why to use them. I never got into the “nitty gritty.” I’m happy to say that I’m not going to now, either. (Sorry, scat-daddies.) I have received a ton (butt-load?) of Facebook messages, comments, and questions about how to do it, and assorted ‘odds and ends.’ Let me say first that everyone has his own style as to “how” to do it (since our bodies vary on the inside). Yes, too, doing it excessively could involve wasting time (it takes a while to sufficiently execute), and—most importantly—there are health concerns associated with douching too much, since it DOES increase the risk of HIV transmission. OK, I’ll stop babying you. If you’re one of the few who don’t know and are too afraid to ask, I thought I’d be a gem and provide you with some resources (see below). Take these resources as points-of-view only. If you’re really hot-and-ready to douche and haven’t before, buck up and ask a counselor at your nearest Gayborhood clinic. First, for some sobering thoughts about the negative consequences of over-douching, check out PrideAlive.org. Pride Alive reiterates the warning that douching increases the risk of HIV transmission, and offers other risk factors.

For a thoughtful, mature how-to point-of-view on douching, check out TheHealthyBear’s blog. You don’t have to be a “bear” to take his advice, but you may find his breakdown at “A Guide to Douching” one of your bare necessities. If you want a visual but funny (and childish) recommendation on how it’s done, check out BunnyBoiTV on YouTube. For a bitchy and graphic tutorial, visit BryanBoy’s blog (BryanBoy.com) and search for “Douching 101.” A mature audio tutorial with a softer delivery is YouTube user “dicktoyzreviews1.” Despite his username, the recommendations are thoughtful and his voice strangely soothing. Despite living in an enlightened time, a conversation on this subject is still considered embarrassing in our community. But it’s one that’s lingering just under the surface, a subject of curiosity to so many. So there you have it.
