Nelson tours regularly (almost yearly), and although he had to cancel tour dates after being diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, he continued writing music during his recovery. LGBT International Events of 2013 According to well-documented research, since those early days when LGBT travel came “out of the suitcase,” 73 percent of gay men take at least two vacations a year, and 74 percent of gay consumers select airlines, hotels, and other travel-related vendors that are known to be “LGBT-friendly.” LGBT travel has become an important and lucrative specialty of the travel industry (giving the phrase “gay cruising” a whole new meaning and context), and many of the top online travel services—including Travelocity, Priceline, Orbitz, and Expedia—are competing for the rainbow-hued dollars of gay travelers looking to book packages for airline, car rental, and tourist attraction tickets. What makes gay travel unique is that it brings together hot locales, hot music, hot activities and events, and—wait for it—hot men and women. This isn’t to say that Average Joes (and Average Toms, Dicks, and Cliffs) aren’t a vital element to be seen in the international gay travel scene. But at the world’s destination events, hotties abound and the ticket here is to become part of a global vibe that celebrates all of our inner beauty, our spirit, our struggles, and our pride in being gay. (AVISO; HEY, YOU!, etc.): There are places, sadly, that welcome LGBT tourist dollars but frown upon (to put it mildly) LGBT culture, and the savvy gay traveler needs to know what places are safe to be “out,” and where you must play things more on the “down-low” (much like, sadly, many American tourists tried passing themselves off as Canadians when traveling internationally during the bleak days immediately post-9/11). (In last week’s issue—Guy Magazine, January 30, 2013, “Hostility on the Horizon: Where Not to Cruise”—Guy Travel writer Robert Elias Deaton offered an objective and comprehensive guide to places that gay travelers may want to think twice about before making non-refundable sailing or airline reservations.) Fortuitously, many of the hottest destination events for gay men and women take place within a stone’s throw (okay, you might need a really good pitching arm to hit some of these locations, but work with me) of beautiful South Florida—with a number of them taking place right here in our own backyards. MIAMI BEACH: Winter Party Festival (3/6 to 3/11) Winter Party Festival celebrates social and cultural events including art, dance, music, food and wine in a benefit for the LGBT community. A week of events builds to the Beach Party, a dance event attended by over 4,500 partiers. About 10,000 participants from all over the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe, and Australia attend the five-day celebration, with official events held at a number of the hottest venues in town, including the host Shelborne South Beach.

FORT LAUDERDALE: 2013 PrideFest (3/9 to 3/10) 2013 PrideFest, which takes place at Greater Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial Auditorium and Holiday Park, includes non-stop local, regional, and national entertainment, an outdoor marketplace featuring over 150 vendors, over 25 food booths, frozen drinks, beer, and cocktails, a dance/karaoke tent and many more fun and exciting surprises. 2013 marks the 36th Annual PrideFest, with all ticket sales benefitting our community.

PALM SPRINGS: White Party Palm Springs (3/29 to 4/1) Heralded as the largest LGBT dance music festival, White Party Palm Springs descends on the So Cal desert with the most-widely recognized gay celebration on the planet, and attracting more than 30,000 attendees from every corner of the globe. Among the highlights will be the crowning of Miami “Real Housewife” Adriana De Moura as Queen of White Party 2013, heralding in the main event on Saturday night, March 30, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

MIAMI BEACH: Miami Beach Gay Pride (4/14) If South Beach isn’t the actual center of the universe, it does a passable imitation of it, as tens of thousands descend upon Miami Beach for the 5th Annual Gay Pride Parade and celebration. Ocean Drive will be awash in rainbow flags and both gay and gay-friendly straights who come to see the roster of entertainers, and to attend the parties in some of the town’s hottest venues.

CHICAGO: International Mr. Leather (5/24 to 5/27) The “City of the Big Shoulders” welcomes the world’s hottest leathermen, who come to Chitown to compete for the title of “International Mr. Leather.” Cheer on Mr. Ramrod, Joey, as a tradition begun in 1979 continues with thousands from the leather community from around the globe coming together to appreciate all it means to be man. MONTRÉAL: Montréal Pride (8/12 to 8/18) Montréal Pride’s 7th edition is seven days of events and festivities, with last year’s attendance surpassing 320,000 total spectators, an increase of 20,000 over the previous year. One of the hottest international circuit events held at the perfect time of the year.

One of Europe’s best and most popular Pride events, it centers on the gay cultural and nightlife around the city’s Gay Village near Canal Street. Street parties and events in local bars with music and entertainment all week and an internationally-renowned parade on Saturday afternoon.

The adult-themed street party officially takes place from sundown to midnight, but the bars along the city’s main thoroughfare, Wilton Drive, keep the party going through the wee small hours, with bars staying open until 2 or 3 a.m. Thousands of costumed party-goers fill the streets and businesses of the Drive, with an assortments of ghosts, goblins, witches, trolls, and fairies (we know what we said) to thrill, tempt and titillate, and costumes contests, cash prizes, and drink specials fueling the fire and fun. LGBT Cruises Sail Ahead By Robert Elias Deatoni In 2012, the cruise industry not only hit its high-water mark, it exceeded it, with estimates by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) suggesting that 17 million passengers were aboard a passenger ship last year, an increase of four percent over 2011. While the LGBT market is a small slice of that total, it is easily the fastest rising segment, given the growing number of all gay and lesbian cruises chartered from the industry leaders: Atlantis Events, RSVP Vacations, and Source Events. “Last year was a fantastic year for us,” Craig Smith, president of Source Events, told Guy Magazine. “We were celebrating our 10th year in the business, and it has been successful beyond my wildest dreams.” Smith honed his organizational skills on large special events like the Winter Party in South Beach. “But there was something missing for me personally,” he said. “The events I had structured were mostly built around nightlight and parties, as opposed to places and people. To explore my dream, I met the folks at Windjammer who had been doing gay cruises on their own. Source Events came about when I decided to charter a boat and allow our guests to connect with their source—themselves, adventure, and spirit.” Smith understands the importance of freeing his guests to have fun—not always as simple as it sounds for those who have spent most of their lives putting up fronts and creating illusions. “What I also learned is that travel takes a lot more time and money than buying a single ticket to a single event. It’s a lot easier to get 5,000 gays to buy a ticket to a beach party than it is to get 75 of them to commit a week or more of their lives and thousands of dollars on something new and different. None of us really knew what to expect, but that was part of the excitement,” he said. Stretching aboard the Wind Star Star (February 23-March 2), the Miami Pride Cruise (April 15-19) aboard the Norwegian Sky, a full moon Lisbon to Barcelona Cruise (September 15-23) on the luxurious Wind Surf, and a train adventure to Peru and the Lost City of Machu Picchu aboard the Hiram Bingham Orient Express (November 2-8). “In the future, it looks like Wind Star will be headed back to Tahaiti in 2014, which I’m exploring,” Smith said. “And it looks like we’re going to be cruising the Black Sea,” which separates Eastern Europe and Western Asia, two areas that aren’t particularly gay friendly. “There are a lot of places that are openly courting gay travelers because they’re known to be big tippers, big buyers, and enjoyable guests. Even countries where the laws might not be gay friendly, the resorts and the people that we meet are,” according to Smith. There are a few exceptions to that rule. “We were originally planning on going to Marrakesh and Morocco,” Smith said. “There was an RSVP cruise for 2,500 that was scheduled for last year and there had been some reports that there could be some danger there. There were mixed signals from the tourism officials, and I do think that you have to pay attention to the politics involved. In each of these places there are gay people and gay businesses that could use our support. At the same time, by travelling we can open minds and hearts—which is something we are actively aware that we do in each port.”

Exercise and the Mind/Body Connection By Tom Bonanti

You’ve probably spent enough time in the gym to realize that there are real tangible results that come from pumping iron and churning out seemingly endless hours of cardio. A stronger heart and lungs, bulging biceps, a sexy cut six-pack are but a few of the results of all your sweaty hard labor. But did you also know that exercise can relieve stress and pressure at work, help you think like a creative whiz kid on your feet, and generally make you feel rejuvenated and invincible? Yes, exercise improves the mind as well as the body. Studies have proved that regular cardio work can enhance the ability of neurotransmitters in the brain to work faster. This higher ability won’t replace a good education or being generally streetsmart, but it can help you to think clearer, quicker, and more creatively. As a trainer, I find that clients who are anxious and stressed, over-worked, or generally depressed and tired, report feeling energized and upbeat after early morning exercise. As a result, they are more relaxed and confident all day at work, and seem to think more clearly and creatively on the job. While a lot of people cannot realistically work out before work, those clients who do regular cardio and weight training throughout their busy week report basically the same increase in energy, confidence, and creativity. Do you come home from work and crash in exhaustion? Does your heart race when you’re stuck in traffic or before a big presentation or meeting? You have the power to change this misery. Start doing cardio, or alter your present cardio routine, and don’t forget to pump some iron while you are at it! You might think these activities would add to your overall fatigue, but you would be wrong. Psychologists say that a key element behind failing under pressure is physical fatigue. Regular cardio (running, biking, or swimming) actually energizes you and charges up your brain and body for tough situations – like your ball-busting boss, or that do nothing co-worker who frays your last nerve. Throwing the weights around helps you to al-

leviate frustration and pent-up aggression as you build a gorgeous toned body in the process. If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Instead of groping for another sleeping pill, reach for the treadmill instead. Regular cardio exercise lowers your resting pulse rate, can lower blood pressure, revs up your metabolism, improves digestion, and biologically assists your brain in producing feel-good endorphins. Endorphins are your body’s naturally-produced pain-killers that help you to feel more relaxed and even elated in the face of stress and strain. Regular exercise will help you to produce these substances as you function better during the day and rest easier at night. How excellent is that? There’s a boy he thinks about when he’s home, under his sheets and in his shower. That pretty brunette head, gorgeous eyes, and beautiful body. Those arms, they’re magnificent, and that ass, well, unspeakable. The subject of this fantasy is “The Looker,” his object “The Great Attractor” (TGA). The Looker often sees TGA standing with his friends at a bar, laughing and talking. When TGA is introduced to an equally-attractive guy, The Looker wishes it were him. The Looker sees himself being what is conventionally considered to be “average:” Average body, average height, average personality, average job, average intelligence, average everything. That’s what he figures, anyway. The Looker can’t stop staring. TGA always has this impact on him, a fantasy inseparable from reality in The Looker’s mind. TGA is the center of almost every fantasy, the face transposed onto almost every porn star, a subject brought up—constantly—in conversation with friends. (And speaking of which: His friends—few though they may be—are true ones, and they demonstrate concern with The Looker’s increasing fixation for TGA. The Looker’s eyes change when he sees TGA. He soooo wants to box him up and carry him away, to hold him forever, to feel his body, to——“You have to stop that,” The Looker’s friend tells him. “It’s not healthy, the way you look at that boy. Just go say hello to him and have it done with.” The Looker squeezes his eyes shut, half-expect-

ing TGA to disappear like a mirage in the desert. But there he stands at the bar, looking perfect. The Looker hears his friend, but he can only see TGA. “HEY!” The Looker’s friend grabs him. “This is getting weirder and weirder. You have to stop this. It’s creeping all of us out.” The friend steps in front of The Looker and looks at him in the face. “STOP IT.” The Looker’s trance is broken. He feels so lightheaded he practically has to gasp for air. He does realize that this isn’t “normal” behavior, but he can’t help himself. Soon enough, TGA will leave the bar, and another week will pass before The Looker “gets” to see him again. He’ll think of nothing else in meantime, just that gorgeous boy. And he’ll do it with ever-increasing focus and intensity. How tenuous is the line between “crushing” on someone and “stalking” them. You can count the times you’ve seen a harmless school-girl crush turn into something more menacing. And how many times has each of us toed that boundary ourselves? We all have had our crushes, and from the safety of middle or high school an obsession over the quarterback’s performance, or that basketballplaying boy’s ass seems acceptable, expected, even cute. But if we “grow up” to be as easily smitten as we were in school, and either lack social skills to relegate these crushes to the realm of harmless fantasy, or the cunning to hide the outward signs, we risk becoming objects of concern, ridicule, and ostracism. Just another Looker.
