THE WEEK

The Go-Go’s, Brian Wilson and a Reverse Quincaenera ____________________ Thursday

by

Patrick Robert

9/26

An Evening of One Acts o Two one acts mark this new performance at the Andrews Living Arts center: one fairly unknown, the other wildly popular. The first one act is the more obscure—the 1963 Off-Broadway “Save Me a Place at Forest Lawn.” Two tired, old, weary widowers meet daily at the cafeteria to discuss their grandchildren, their lives, and death’s looming presence. A treat, surely, for any gay “Golden Girls” fan. The second production is a bit more known—“The Vagina Monologues”. Eve Ensler’s feminist, Obie award-winning play consists of a few women sitting in a circle reciting funny, haunting, sad, affecting monologues. Known for its vivid descriptions of the female anatomy yet tempered with charged political sentiments, “The Vagina Monologues” is a contemporary sensation. If personal descriptions of the inner-workings of a gay man’s biggest nightmare (the vagina) are not your thing, then you may want to skip this graphic tour-de-force. On the other hand, if you like wellwritten, interesting, controversial material, then you could put your fears aside and enjoy a night at the theater. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW 5th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck oBrian Wilson is one of those heavily respected, mentally ill musicians who seemed to crop up around the 1960’s. Back in those wistful years, he composed and arranged music for The Beach Boys. During this time he also produced his own critically successful album Pet Sounds. Then, Brian Wilson began his mental breakdowns. His second album, Smile, was dropped. The Beach Boys’ relationship with him strained as Wilson suffered nervous breakdown after nervous breakdown. Fortunately, he composed himself and released Smile to heavy acclaim in 2004 (over 30 years later). Now, he has teamed up with Jeff Beck—named one of the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone and ex-guitarist for The Yardbirds. Not only are they touring, but word is a new album is in the works. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314. guymag.net

The Manor: Bubble Gum Fridays o If you don’t know who Brian Wilson or The Beach Boys are, then this may be the place for you. Fort Lauderdale’s favorite 18+ dance party never fails to bring in the crowds, even if a big chunk of said crowd can’t even legally rent a car yet. A hip-hop room, a large dance floor, an outdoor bar, many indoor bars, and a cruising balcony make this one of the greatest dance clubs in South Florida— gay or straight. Get your tight-jeans, your wife-beaters, your neon-colored spandex ready. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Julian’s Reverse Quincaenera oEvery little Hispanic girl dreams of having her very own quincanera. Unfortunately, little gay Hispanic boys dreaming to be girls never got their chance for their own quincanera . Thankfully, Fort Lauderdale is the city where every gay queen can nourish the inner little girl inside. Julian’s “Reverse Quincanera” is actually a beauty pageant in which Fort Lauderdale’s finest Damas compete for the title of 2013-2014 Ms. Reverse Quincanera. The reigning Ms. Reverse Quincanera, Alota Pinata, will be relinquishing her crown to participants ranging from Ms. Dolly Patron to Ms. Deja Blu. All of the proceeds benefit SunServe. Mexican fiesta attire is recommended. 7 p.m. Second Presbyterian Church Hall. 1400 N. Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, 33304. THE WEEK continues on page 34 theguymag

THE WEEK The Go-Go’s oOver the summer, Belinda Carlisle performed a repertoire of her solo work during Gay Disney at Orlando’s Parliament House. A mini-gay icon, Belinda has reunited with the band that started her career, The Go-Go’s. If you don’t remember The Go-Go’s that just means you’re under 40 (and still prime gay culture real estate). The Go-Go’s burst onto the 80s pop scene with such classic songs as “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “We Got the Beat”. Now both wedding reception and cruise ship staples, the infectious songs have somehow stood the test of, admittedly, a lot of time. They are also dubbed the most successful all female rock band ever. 8 p.m. The Seminole Coconut Creek Casino. 5550 NW 40th St, Coconut Creek, 33073.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Tuesday Sunday 9/29 Pan American Modernism Christopher Titus o Back in the early 2000s Christopher Titus had a critically, if not commercially, successful sitcom on Fox entitled Titus. Despite the rave reviews, the show unfortunately did not become a megasuccess, but Titus’ humor lives on in his witty stand-up. Titus came from a dysfunctional and abusive family, with a hard-drinking father and schizophrenic mother. He rose out from all that trauma a funny man and uses his pain to amuse his audience (sort of like gay people). He also, quite nobly, started a charity foundation, entitled The Insight Youth Project, to help kids in dysfunctional families. 8 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way, Fort Lauderdale, 33314.

o More than 70 artists spanning from Latin America to the United States are on display at this exhibit at the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables. The artwork (all from the 20th century) includes paintings, sculpture, photography, and mixed media executed in styles like Mexican murals, Cuban avant-garde, and Colombian modernism. Many of the artists had influences from a range of cultures. Watercolorist Guillermo Wiedermann was born in Germany, lived in Colombia, and retired to the United States. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Lowe Art Museum. 1301 Stanford Dr, Coral Gabels 33146.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Wednesday Monday 9/30 Moon Over Buffalo An American Presence in Cuba and The Conflux of Eternities o The Palm Beach Photographic Centre offers two interesting exhibits. An American Presence in Cuba shows fun photos of the glitterati in pre-embargo Cuba taken by a bunch of different photographers. The happiness starkly contrasts the harsh realities about to take place. The Conflux of Eternities continues the Cuban theme with work done by the Centre’s artist-in-residence, Kadir Lopez. The Cuba-born Lopez’ latest series of photographs, entitled “Signs”, explores

o A down-on-their-luck theatrical family tries one last shot at becoming the next big thing in this play. What else can be better than watching a drunken womanizer, his wacky wife, a deaf grandmother trying to get “back on the boards”, and a sad daughter who has given up acting? After all, plays about the biz always tend to be better than any other topic. The show stars Ken Clement, Michelle Foytek, Andy Quiroga, Jessica Carmen, Don Winsor, Susan Slotoroff, Glen Lawrence, and Miki Edelman. 2 p.m. Stage Door Theatre. 8036 W Sample Rd, Coral Springs, 33065.

TRAVEL

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Dolly Parton, Dollywood and a Step Back in Time by

Rick Karlin

o

As a former northerner, the only thing I miss about the weather “up north” is the changing of leaves. In order to get my fix, I often take a quick trip to the Smoky Mountains. Depending on my mood, I can go all artsy and plan a trip to Asheville, N.C., or if I’m feeling a little campy, I head over to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, home of Dollywood. Like Dolly Parton herself, Pigeon Forge is kind of over-the-top tacky and a bit top-heavy. Most families head there in the summer, so Fall and early Winter is the perfect time to visit--the crowds are minimal, there are less screaming children and the prices are lower. The weather, right up until Christmas, is usually warm enough so that you can get away with a light jacket or sweater, and thru midOctober it can be downright balmy. In addition to standard amusement park thrill rides, Dollywood features traditional crafts and music of the Smoky Mountains area. The park hosts a number of concerts and musical events each year, including appearances by Parton and her family, as well as other national and local musical acts. Dollywood is also the site of the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame. The park has come a long way since 1984 when Dolly Parton bought into an existing rural amusement park, doubling its size to 150 acres. Dollywood is organized into ten themed areas. The Showstreet, Rivertown Junction, Craftsmen’s Valley, Village, Country Fair, Timber Canyon, and Jukebox Junction areas reflect the historical eras and culture of east Tennessee, while the Dreamland Forest and Adventures in Imagination areas explore Dolly Parton’s life and creative mind. If you like roller coasters and rides, Dollywood has enough to keep you happy including The Wild Eagle, America’s first wing coaster. After the high season, some of the rides and attractions are closed, but the real reason to visit is the Chasing Rainbows Museum, with mementos of Dolly’s career, including many of her costumes and a display where you can virtually “try on’ many of Dolly’s wigs. You can always tell the gay men at Dollywood because they spend an inordinate amount of time at this exhibit. The days of operation vary during the fall months and then pick up again between Thanksgiving and early January. Single day tickets for Dollywood are about $50, and discounts are often available. Special concerts sometimes have a separate ticket price.

guymag.net

Time your visit to coincide with some of the special events and festivals to maximize your fun. Among the special events slated through the end of the year are the National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration from Oct. 2 – Nov. 2, held on the Dollywood grounds is the biggest Southern gospel festival in the Smokies. Admission to all concerts is included with Dollywood admission. Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival runs November 9 through January 4, and features four million holiday lights and spectacular holiday performances, including Dollywood’s allnew adaptation of the Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol”, more than 20 rides and attractions, elaborate holiday decorations, twinkling lights and Christmas-themed menus. For more information call 800-365-5996 or go dollywood.com. A perfect way to Ho-Ho-Ho.

FITNESS

Training Like a Brute by Tom

Bonanti

o

Just when you think that you can hardly lift another pound for one more rep of your last set, that’s when you need to give it just a little more. This is the point when real muscle growth can take place if you are up for the challenge. That’s the idea behind forced repetitions--one of the best ways to power through a plateau and gain size. Here’s when a spotter, bud or personal trainer can come in handy to help you unleash the brute inside of you! Forced repetitions are based upon the concept that when you lift weights, the final few repetitions of your last set are the most beneficial, because at this point the muscles targeted are being pushed to exhaustion. While one guy does the lifting, his partner places his hands in the proper position to help him finish one or two more reps he couldn’t have completed on his own. If you’ve got a partner you can count on, try this program once a week. Using this strategy on a daily basis is too much and may result in overtraining and injuries like tendonitis. Here’s an example of a forced reps exercise for each muscle group. Barbell Squats: Grasp a barbell on the upper back, with feet shoulder width apart. Lower until your thighs are parallel to the ground, pause, then rise to starting position. At the end of your last set, have a partner stand behind you with hands around your torso and have him assist you in completing 2 more reps. Make sure to keep your back straight and your toes pointed outward with knees behind your toes as you squat down. Triceps Skull Crushers: Lie on a bench and grasp an EZ curl bar at arms length over the chest. Lower it to just above the forehead, pause then return to starting position. For your last set, have a partner stand over you and help you raise and lower the bar for 2 more reps. Biceps Partial Curls: Grasp an EZ curl bar with arms bent at 90 degree angles. Curl up until biceps meet forearms, pause, then lower to starting position. For your last set, have a partner face you and help you curl 2 more reps. guymag.net

Barbell Bench Press: Lie face up and grasp a barbell with arms bent at 90 degree angles. Press it overhead, pause, then return to starting position. At the end of your last set, have your partner stand over you and help raise and lower the bar for one or two more reps. Pull Ups for Shoulders, Back: Grasp an overhead pull-up bar and pull yourself up so that your chin is at or above the bar, pause, then lower yourself to the starting position. At the end of your last set, have your partner grasp your feet and help you do just a couple more reps. Forced repetitions once a week for each muscle group, will really maximize muscle size and strength. Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com or stop by Pumpn’Inc. at 1271 NE 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale 954-557 1119.
