he Festival of Souls is scaring the keeblers out of visitors to The Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale. The Festival is a 19-day event featuring an 8,000 sq. ft. Haunted House (the “Demon Mansion”), a labyrinth of Demons and Creatures of the Night. The Mansion’s 17 frightening rooms feature the awesomesounding Howling Woman Room, Maggot Dining Room, Hell’s Kitchen, Butcher Shop/ Freezer, Exploding Bathroom, Electrocution Room, Scary Clown Room, and Redneck Tool Shed, among many others. Best of all: The Zombie Safari Paint Ball Hayride, a trip into the 50,000 sq. ft. ruins of an apocalyptic city, where you shoot at “live” Zombies with paintball guns that propel U-V paint. Uh, yeah. Also, check out the soulful (or is he soulless—hey, it’s Halloween, fool) Resident Evil DJ, Maximus 3000 (aye, Papi—scare me up some hot jams). Going on now through Halloween (Oct. 31).

exy-and-sweet Matt Bomer was accoladed (is that a word?) at the 8th Annual Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Respect Awards, held Friday, Oct. 5, at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Bomer’s “Magic Mike” co-star, Joe Manganiello, praised the USA Network’s “White Collar” leading man as an “example that the rest of our country needs to wake up and see, in terms of equality and putting an end to the bullying epidemic, and making sure that every family is respected in our schools and our society.” Bomer, who came out in February, was honored along with his partner, publicist Simon Halls, for their “meaningful contributions toward creating a world where every child learns to respect and accept all people.” The actor, who shares three children with Halls, spoke of his struggle towards selfacceptance. “When I was in high school, there was no safe haven, there was no outlet for you to speak your mind,” he said, adding, “when you aren’t allowed to speak about who you are, one of the most authentic parts of who you are, which is who you love or who you’re attracted to, feels invisible.”

Although I’m too young to remember firsthand the glitz and glamour of the Rat Pack, JFK’s Camelot (which the late President himself apparently never experienced either, since use of the mythical kingdom’s name as a watchword for his Presidency wasn’t coined until after his death), or the original (and best) James Bond, Sean Connery, I do have a strong personal yen for the 1960s, including the look of inch-and-a-half-lapelled grey-flannel jackets and thin solid ties, Ray-Ban shades, and, of course, the music of Sinatra & Co.

The cooler weather means that we can start breaking out our more stylish threads, including the occasional use of a sport coat (you’re all growns up now, young man). What better time of year to combine cool duds with cool cocktails and cool music, and invite your tribe over for some “Mad Men” fun of your own? Nothing goes better with that “Rat Pack Live at the Sands” vibe than that classic American cocktail, the martini. One of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages, writer H. L. Mencken called it “the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet.” There are many variations, but in modern practice the martini is a mix of gin and dry vermouth, usually mixed in a five-to-one ratio. That being said, nearly any “adult” beverage can serve as the basis for a martini. Vodka, rum, bourbon, brandy, tequila, sake, and even wine can be used in mixing the concoction that James Bond ordered “shaken, not stirred.” (Martini purists would argue that shaking

40

|

guy magazine

one’s martini will cause the ice to prematurely melt, giving you a weak drink. The “Savoy Cocktail Book,” written in 1930, recommends stirring for all of its martini recipes.) A martini’s “dryness” refers to the amount of vermouth used, with a “very dry martini” containing little or no vermouth. On the other hand, a wet martini is drowning in vermouth. (The 20th century playwright and composer—and gay icon— Noël Coward suggested making the perfect martini by “filling a glass with gin then waving it in the general direction of Italy,” one of the world’s two major producers of vermouth, along with France. Coward, a fan of the dry martini, advocated adding the least amount of vermouth to the gin for a better-tasting drink.) A dirty martini contains a splash or more of olive juice. The martini was popular with such famous names as Truman Capote, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The new Infinity Lounge on Wilton Drive hosts Sinatra Sundays, which I can’t recommend enough for you and your own clique of Dean, Sammy, and friends to enjoy. Try these fun and delicious recipes on for size, Chickie Baby (as Frank himself called his carousing pal, JFK).

The Classic Gin Martini

1 dash of dry vermouth 2 oz of gin, chilled Pour a little dry vermouth into a chilled martini glass and swirl it around, to coat the inside of the glass. Dispose of the excess vermouth. In a shaker full of ice, gently swirl or stir the gin before straining it into the glass. Serving suggestion: Garnish with olives, lemon twist, or cocktail onion, and add rocks if you like.

Neapolitan Martini

Just like the ice cream! 1 oz of vanilla-flavored vodka 1 oz of orange-flavored vodka 1 oz of orange liqueur 1 splash of lime juice Pour vodka, orange liqueur, and lime juice into a mixing glass with ice. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with an orange peel.

Neapolitan Martini The Classic Gin Martini Knickerbocker Martini

Some people think that this is the original martini recipe, served by a bartender named— wait for it—“Martini” at New York City’s toney Knickerbocker Hotel, sometime around 1912. 2 dashes of orange bitters 1 dash of orange liqueur 1 oz of vermouth 2 oz of gin Pour into a mixing glass filled with ice, and stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass, add a twist of lemon peel, and serve.

Knickerbocker Martini

Cosmopolitan Martini

½ oz of orange liqueur 1 oz of vodka Juice from ½ of a lime 1 splash of cranberry juice Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass half filled with ice, and shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Saketini

This tasty Far East variation is becoming hugely popular everywhere. Crack open the “You Only Live Twice” DVD and drink up, James Bond-san. 2 ½ oz of gin 1 ½ tsp of sake rice wine 1 cocktail olive In a mixing glass half-filled with ice cubes, combine the gin or vodka with the sake. Stir well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with the olive.

Guy Dining By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

TIJUANA FLATS

There Is No Problem a Burrito Can’t Solve

T

ijuana Flats on East Sunrise Boulevard is a oneroom joint of the place-your-order and-waitfor-the-magic-to-happen type. Around 7 p.m. on any night, the place is a chatty, crazy kind of fun where it’s likely you’ll end up becoming best friends with the folks at the next table. Everyone, from the wait staff who cashier your order, to the kitchen staff who prepare it, to the manager who may just end up serving it, likes to talk. It’s this slap-ya-on-the-back sort of camaraderie that is as intriguing as the food. We’ve eaten at Tijuana Flats maybe ten times over the past two years, so we know this menu well. It breaks down rather easily, as most things Mexican do, into burritos, chimichangas, tacos, nachos, flautas, tosdadas, enchiladas, and quesadillas. At TF’s, you not only get to choose your meal, you get to choose the size of your meal—as in the quantity of food on your plate. Burritos, for instance, come in three sizes— the Regular—about the size of Rhode Island; the Tijuana—about the size of Pennsylvania; and the Megajuana—think Texas. Our favorite is the Blackened Chicken Burrito Tijuana Size at $6.19. For that price you get a whole-wheat tortilla, filled with the aforementioned chicken (done delightfully moist), tomatoes, lettuce, onions, jalapenos, and sour cream—with your selection of 15 different hot sauces from the “pump your own” serving bar. Hot sauces are a specialty here, with Tijuana Flats serving their own “Smack My Ass & Call Me

44

|

guy magazine

Sally” brand in varying intensities from mild BLACKENED CHICKEN BURRITO to five-alarm fire. And regardless of where on the menu you may wander, you’ll eventually end up back on the sauce, so to speak. Tuesday nights is Taco Tuesdaze where for $4.99 you can get two large crispy tacos, with lettuce, chopped tomatoes, onions, jalepenos, plus chips and a drink—and yes, hot sauce. A deal that packs the place. On Thursday night, think Throwback Thursdaze during which $5.99 gets you a regular burrito, chips and a drink. Same fillers, same sauces. The bargain remains in your pocketbook. Lighten your potbelly with the Norrito Bowl, a burrito without the tortilla, served in a bowl and topped with a light salsa-based rice, black beans, pico de gallo sauce, fresh guacamole and green onions. All for only $6.19. If calories are no object, then rush right over and order a Chimichanga, which is stuffed full of cheese, chicken or beef, all the toppings and lightly fried. The Megajuana Carnitas Chimichangas go for $8.59. The chain was started just up the road in Winter Park, Florida back in 1995 by Brian Wheeler, and Brian is still at the wheel along with his pop Chester, who’s CFO, and industry insider Camp Fitch (ya gotta love the name), who’s co-partner and chairman. The restaurant now numbers some seventy-plus eateries, spread over several states, with Florida getting the lion’s share. From the murals on the wall, to the funky drawings on the menus, nothing is taken too seriously at Tijauna Flats—except the food, which is consistently great, fast, and plentiful. The company gives back to the community through its Just in Queso Foundation that to date has donated $670,000 to those in need. Check out the action any night of the week. The restaurant is snuggled next to the Trek Bicycle Shop, so expect to see plenty of spandex in the vicinity. And, as always, tell them Guy Magazine sent you.

Lips Fundraiser

Nets Nearly $6K for Women in Distress

O

n September 23, Women In Distress of Broward County (WID) held a fundraising event at Lips Cabaret: The Ultimate in Drag Dining (1421 E Oakland Park Blvd, Oakland Park). The evening, entitled “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” was a tribute to the late Whitney Houston and Donna Summer, a one-night event that was a virtual sellout, and helped to generate nearly $6,000 for the organization, the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. The Ladies of Lips performed such classics as “Last Dance,” “Bad Girls,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “Step by Step,” and “I Will Always Love You,” and the cast included show hostess Nicolette, and performers April, Alexis, Martina, Champagne, and others. As well as the stage show, a Silent Auction also helped rake in extra funds, and the entertainers donated their tips to benefit the cause, which in this case will support the agency’s 24-hour crisis intervention hotline and emergency shelter, as well as counseling and support for victims and their children. WID also provides education and professional training about the tragedy of domestic violence and related topics in Broward County schools and in the community. “Women In Distress is very grateful to Lips and other businesses that support our mission of keeping families safe,” said Mary Riedel,

50

|

guy magazine

the agency’s president and CEO. “This event is always enjoyed and looked forward to by our supporters and we, of course, look forward to the funds that are raised to help keep the families safe with support groups and emergency shelter,” she added. The organization’s name is something of a misnomer, as they assist not only women, but men and transgendered people who are in personal distress. They have extended their umbrella to an increasing need in the community. “We have really grown in the last few years,” one attendee—who left before I could get her name, shame on both of us—told me. “Of course, we were an advocate for women to protect them from abusive relationships, but we’ve seen a need to expand our services, and we are truly elated that we have been so accepted, and that we have been able to help so many others in need.” Lips superstar Diva created the Glitz & Glam fundraiser in 2010 to benefit Women in Distress. Each year the event has a different theme, but a single purpose: to help Women in Distress with a great meal, a great time, and the talent of the Ladies of Lips. Navigating Your Way Through Life (Without a Google or iOS 6 Map)

I

remember the days when I had to get MapQuest directions, then print and staple the pages together before embarking to wherever I was heading. Now that the “old days” are behind us, our smartphones have become, for many us, our primary navigation tool. A “great disturbance in the Force” occurred when Apple and Google kicked off their “Map Wars” this summer, with Google maps no longer available on the iPhone, and Apple’s map app—with its reports of broken geographical images and misnamed locales— proving out a disaster at its launch (although a survey by ChangeWave Research found that 90 percent of iOS 6-users haven’t experienced any problems with the much-slammed app). Still, other alternatives— some of them better, some more expensive—to Google Android and iOS 6 maps exist. Navigon, for U.S. maps on iOS and Android, incorporates many elements that you would find on a high-end mobile GPS unit. In addition to providing standard navigational routing and text-to-speech turn-by-turn instructions, the app, which works offline, also gives advice on highway lane choices, alerts you to the posted speed limits (and the location of speed-trapping cameras), and provides running commentary about “points of interest,” such as lodging, where to buy gas, drug store locations, and the like.

Navigon

52

|

guy magazine

The app likewise provides information relating to pedestrian navigation, helping you in places that aren’t accessible by auto. It even assists in helping you find your parked car (if only it could help my bf find where he left his keys). Through an in-app purchase, Navigon’s Public Transport feature assists with modes like buses, Tri-Rail, etc. “6th Avenue Heartache:” $40 (I warned you some of these were spendy).

MotionX GPS Drive

MotionX GPS Drive is a relatively-cheap iOSfriendly app with features that include alerts about local traffic snarls, spoken turn-by-turn directions, lane guidance to help you in complex intersections, exits, and highway interchanges—like the Golden Glades in north Miami-Dade County, or the I-595/I-75/Sawgrass Expressway “spaghetti bowl” in west Broward—and a speed limit display that shows your current speed, and sends a visual alert when you exceed the speed limit. Available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. “Exile on Main Street:” $1 to download the app, plus a $10 annual fee. Continued on Page 54

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Be Pork: Bad Piggies

L

ast month, Angry Birds developer Rovio released Bad Piggies, a kind of app-mélange, mixing the latter app’s kitsch and the physics of the company’s Amazing Alex. In Bad Piggies, you build vehicles to ferry the porcine critters, while they complete gravity-influenced tasks in the process. After you assemble a conveyance, it slugs its way through assorted obstacles like hills, valleys, and holes (mind out of the gutter, Sir). The game has a star ranking system that incentivizes your completion of successive levels with sound effects and graphics. The graphics are similar to those in Angry Birds (in their Saturday morning cereal-box way), but the designers have kicked things up a notch with better sound effects and a fun “soundtrack.” Pork This: $1 for iPhone/ iPod, $3 for iPad. Hunchbacks, Rejoice! The Arkon Tablet Stand Has Your Back

I

nk-stained wretch that I am, my boyfriend, Proculus, will often find me sitting hunched over the iPad or computer (much as I am this very moment), typing away like some Lovecraftian nerd hell-bent on preventing a cosmic evil (such as missing a deadline). With my posture and yours in mind, Arkon has unveiled a set of sissy-twins that will support both your back and your tablet, including all iPad models. The 10-inch Universal Mini Tablet Stand with Quick Release Holder (hold your laughter) is designed with desktop use in mind. It is built from three pieces, and comes with an Allen wrench to facilitate assembly, Inspector Gadget. It is also available in the 4-foot Extending Tablet Floor Stand with Quick Release Holder (what did I tell you, Laughing Boy?). Take a Stand: $40 for the 10inch model (I think it’s funny, too), and $90 for the 4-footer (if you can take it).

CHICAGO PART II

Boystown Isn’t Just for Boys

F

ollowing up on last week’s introduction to Chicago, Illinois, we return to President Obama’s, onetime hometown to scour the gayborhoods best bars, clubs, and cafés. Chicago’s largest gay village is nicknamed Boystown, though it’s legally known as Lakeview. The first officially recognized gay neighborhood in the United States, it is also the cultural center of one of the largest LGBT communities in the nation. For those who keep track of such statistics, Boystown also has more resident drag queens per square inch than any other place in America. Our hands-down favorite club in the area is Sidetrack (3349 N Halsted St., between Roscoe and Buckingham). Currently celebrating its 30th Sidetrack has big bars, big crowds, and big gay fun anniversary, Sidetrack is a labyrinth of seven bars, lounges and a celebrated balcony from which all things wicked can be observed. It’s the largest video bar in Chicago, and swears it sells more vodka per night than any other bar in the entire U.S.A. Just down the block and across the street is Roscoe’s (3356 N Halsted St.), where the kids go to dance, and the Daddies go to spoil them. Roscoe’s, now in its 25th year, is a great place for eats in spring, summer and the beginning of fall, with its sidewalk café. The big draw is the wet boxers contest the first Sunday of each month—boxers as in underwear, not pugilists. Continue walking up Halsted Street and visit Cocktail (3359 N Halsted St.), where the drinks are fun concoctions like strawberry mojitos, legendary DJ’s spin sizzling hot music, and some surprisingly good Chicago pizza and salads are served at The Garden. Very hot go-go dancers perform on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Hydrate (3458 N Halsted St.) gets points for its College Night on Tuesday. Drinks are $1 each and you don’t have to be matriculating to attend. Those that are, however, get inside for no cover charge

56

|

guy magazine

A fitting structure in Boystown

with appropriate college I.D. The rest of the week are drag events at Hydrate, with all the drama and hair such a schedule suggests. For those into leather and bear packs, there is always the tried-and-true CellBlock (3702 N Halsted St.). While the front bar is rather tame, the back bar is serious leather, with porn video to prove the point. For something a lot sleazier, pump it up and head to Manhandler Saloon (1948 N. Halsted St.). This place is Chicago’s bar-equivalent to a bathhouse, so don’t give us those Betty Boop eyes when your pants are pulled down around your knees and a wet mouth enters your sightline. This does not happen in plain view, of course. Mosey right through the front bar with its surly bartenders, and right through the back patio. The action takes place beyond the stockade fencing where Touché sounds fancy but it’s downright leather crowds as large as three dozen will be doing the nasty nightly. Chicago’s alternative gayborhood to Boystown is Andersonville. This one-time Swedish settlement has given way to upscale LGBT residents who flock to @mosphere (5355 N Clark St. at Balmoral Ave.). The attractions here are drink specials, a large dance floor, and go-go dancers from Wednesday through Saturday. Go a little further north and discover Touché (6412 N Clark St. at W Devon Ave.), a fancy name for a leather bar that’s been around for 35 years. The place is sweet with just the right stench, and men’s men playing in the backroom. Our kinda town.

Guy Nutrition By ANDY KRESS

Migraine

M

No More

igraines are a paroxysmal affliction that have plagued the world with painful headaches since recorded medical history. People who suffer from this disease are stricken with pain on one side of the head, along with radiant eye pain and loss of appetite, making the most menial tasks seem like big jobs. Migraine sufferers will show this defined pattern of events daily, weekly, monthly or periodically throughout the year. Living through the torment of this raging pain leaves many of its victims in a wake of depression and malnutrition. Yet, being under the harsh grip of this painful tension headache does not have to be so for intelligent, methodical, and perfectionminded people who suffer from it. Ironically, migraine sufferers often unknowingly bring this problem on themselves through their busy daily lifestyles. Most cases are caused by low blood sugar, infection, allergies, overintake of certain drugs and chemicals, over working, low energy from loss of appetite, improper sleep and overconsumption of tobacco, alcohol, and sex. Other outside stimulations like excessive light, eye strain, fear, fright or anger, and resentment after hard work can bring on migraine symptoms. Knowing that most of the conditions that create a migraine are caused by our own actions, it becomes easier to find a cure through behavior modification. Nutrition also plays a part. Having a balanced diet along with a balanced lifestyle is a sure-fire way to eliminate the unbearable symptoms that migraines can cause. However, due to the fact that migraines cause a lack of appetite and lower energy levels, this will be no easy task. With any kind of successful treatment plan you need to fix or repair the organism as a whole. Doing this will require you to make a change to get a change. Changing the internal environment of the body to relieve

58

|

guy magazine

migraine suffering will require an internal cleansing of the body to restore its overall vitality. This part is easy, requiring only a little time and effort. Changing your stressful environment is a different story. People suffering from migraine tension first need to detox the body with a special cleansing ritual. The cleansing should start with two to three day fasting, consuming only orange juice and water taken every two hours for a 12-hour time period each day. Alternative juices that are acceptable during this cleaning are celery, carrot and cucumber. After the juice fasting, an all-fruit diet should be incorporated for the next five days. Taking in three meals a day of fresh juicy apples, pineapples, melons, grapes, grapefruits, oranges, peaches and pears is the ideal diet. No other foods should be taken at this time or it will compromise the overall effect of the detoxification. After finishing the terms of the five-day all-fruit fasting, a well-balanced diet should be instated. This diet should consist of nuts, seeds, grains, fruits and vegetables. In time, the diet should be supplemented with milk and dairy products, vegetable oils and honey. Short periods of the all-fruit diet may be needed for a month or two down the road to eradicate any future migraine from reoccurring. A well-balanced dietary plan is imperative for keeping any future migraine episodes at bay. The new diet must become a lifestyle choice, and perpetuated. Never, ever go back to eating refined cereals, sugars and sweets, for fatty and refined foods will only offset the body and send it right back into the state from which it came. Please choose wisely. You are what you eat! Andy Kress is a certified fitness trainer, yoga instructor and nutritional counselor in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Wilton Manors Development Alliance:

A Citywide “Main Street”

O

f all the things that Krishan Manners, President and CEO of Wilton Manors Development Alliance (WMDA), finds striking about his adopted city, one of the most notable is that so many things to see and do are packed into such a small geographic space. “You know the city is only two square miles, but we have so much going on,” says Manners. A roster of Krishans upcoming events proves Manner out the truth of that remark. “First, we have ‘Wicked Wilton,’ presented by the Rainbow Business Coalition [RBC] and the City of Wilton Manors, which will be held on Wednesday, October 31 [Halloween], from 6 to 11 p.m. The bars and restaurants along the Drive, of course, will be staying open past that time. This year the city is paying for the street closure, and the event will more resemble the original ‘Wicked Manors,’” he notes, adding that “the event is entitled ‘Fairy Tales,’ and they are expecting over 10,000 revelers.” Also just around the corner is the “Taste of the Island, which is slated for November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Richardson Park,” Manners says, continuing down the list of must-do activities. “This is the seventh annual event, and people can taste specialties from local restaurants, as well as mix and mingle with neighbors.” He notes with a smile (fully engaged now in local-booster-mode) that the deadline for restaurants to register was October 15. “Tickets are $30 in advance, and $35 at the door,” he offers. “We keep some of the monies from ticket sales for seed money, and then the

62

|

guy magazine

balance is split between the Kiwanis Club, the Historical Society of Wilton Manors, the Wilton Manors Library, and the Wilton Manors Development Alliance.” Manners helms an organization that was previously known to locals as Wilton Manors Main Street. “We made the name change as a way of reaching out to more businesses off Wilton Drive,” he explains. The change was made to encompass a more citywide mandate. “We are currently working on funding in order to have a larger impact on the entire city,” Manners notes. “We are still working to make Wilton Drive a two-lane street, and to create angled-parking,” he adds, with real enthusiasm. “For 2013, we are working in partnership with the City of Fort Lauderdale for ‘Full Sails,’ which would be similar to ‘Cows on Parade’ in Chicago.” Manners explains, “These sailboats are seven feet tall and five feet long. Local artists paint and decorate the boats, which are placed all around the city, but particularly on Wilton Drive.” Manners says “Full Sails” represents a unique opportunity to highlight the Island City in a creative and striking way, which will draw attention—and revenue—to local commerce. “We need local sponsors to make this a huge success,” he says. “We want to see more art in Wilton Manors, and with this alliance we believe we will get there.” (Sponsorship for each boat is approximately $4,000. To learn more, visit fullsailsinfortlauderdale.com.) Finishing our autumnal Tour de Wilton, the “Chairman of the Boosters” notes that “November 16 marks the first ‘Art Walk’ this year, to usher in ‘season.’ So you can see,” Manners adds with a smile, “there is a lot going on in the Island City.” To say the least.
