Living Room - Three Years On

Celebrating one of Fort Lauderdale’s Premiere Nightclubs For three years Living Room has taken clubbing to the ultimate level. “Trendy,” ”state of the art” and “cutting edge” are just a sprinkling of the sentiments that South Florida’s clubbers have used to describe the Living Room located in Fort Lauderdale’s downtown entertainment district. Friday nights in South Florida belong to Living Room and attract upwards to 2,000 gay revelers each week. Their free drink special from 10 p.m. to midnight, coupled with no cover charge has ensured that Living Room is the one place to be

o

20 | jumponmarkslist.com

seen on the scene come the end of the week! The entertainment venue is the brainchild of club designers Mark Lowe and Christian Leonard who will tell you that Living Room is ‘a work in progress’, ever changing to appease an extremely fickle audience who want only the best in sound, music and atmosphere and a hot looking crowd. Mark and Christian have managed to continually deliver the goods for three years. We celebrate their anniversary by looking back at the rise of Living Room through pictures from the past three years.

Consistency in Creativity, Freshness, and Quality I first visited and reviewed Market 17 about 10 months ago when it was still a new kid on the block to the Fort Lauderdale dining scene. I had a great experience while dining there, and I have since returned many times quite recently. If anything, this farm to table restaurant has only improved in its quality of farm fresh food and the creativity of its chef and the dishes he prepares. One feature of Market 17 that I have fallen in love with is the special pricing and offer that comes with its daily happy hour, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings!) All appetizers and starters are 50% parmesan polenta, caramelized onion, and arugula, off at the bar. Not only that, but Market 17’s this dish’s complexity of flavors and textures signature cocktails are also offered at 50% off the menu price. It is possible to sit and relax, enjoy top satisfies. Jumbo Stone Crab Claws are in season now, and Market 17 offers them—and they truly quality food and creatively mixed cocktails, and are jumbo—at $20 a piece. Sweet and tender, lose yourself in the peaceful, subtle atmosphere that defines Market 17 for a very reasonable price, they come to you with three sauces for dipping: avocado soup, chili-lime aioli, and mustard sauce. because when the check arrives, it is simply cut As each sauce is as good and fresh as the next, it is in half. This is most definitely a win for serious nearly impossible to determine a favorite. foodies who enjoy dining on the lighter side by Feeling in the mood to splurge a bit on a choosing several small plates rather than a large recent Sunday evening visit, my partner and entrée. MARKET 17 I decided to try a couple of entrées. Every Market 17’s cocktail 1850 SE 17th Street entrée on the Market 17’s menu is offered menu is a patron’s first Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 in both petite and full entrée size. Kimi McCurry adventurous and try more dishes while is the bar manager, and she allowing the health conscious diner some has created each cocktail on portion control. I opted for the petite portion of the menu with attention to fresh fruit juices, fruit purees, infusions, and garnishes. I am partial to her the Roasted Red Feather Chicken ($19/$32). The chicken breast arrived moist and juicy and sitting take on the classic Manhattan: the M17. If vodka is your spirit, then try upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Milk poached turnips escarole accompanied my entrée and I the Strawpow Capricosa. Tito’s vodka (fresh from eagerly consumed every bit. My partner decided Texas!) is mixed with fresh muddled strawberries, pomegranate seeds and lime, and agave nectar. It’s to try the Grilled Wreckfish ($22/$36), though neither of us were familiar with this particular all topped off with a splash of soda. It’s refreshing, fish. I have since found out this species lives in old full of flavor and, like all the cocktails on the shipwrecks, hence its name. It is a low harvested menu, oh-so-beautiful to look at. Market 17’s cocktail menu is creative, playful, and unique, with fish and is a great source of protein and B vitamins and minerals. Essential Travel Tips

Exchange Rates & Foreign Travel Outside of plane delays and unforeseen inclement weather, one of the biggest frustrations of traveling overseas is the challenge of money loss via bad exchange rates. Simply put: nobody likes to see money devalued in a Madonna-esque “Impressive Instant.” It doesn’t seem like the US dollar will triumph the Euro or the British Pound anytime soon, but you can save 3-10% of your dollar value by adhering to a few essential tips on your international travels.

o

Charge Away – A number of credit cards have upped the incentives for charging purchases abroad. The American Express Platinum Card has removed its 3% foreign transaction fee, charging purchases at the official market rate. Several Chase credit cards have followed suit – including the British Airways Visa Signature Card and the Chase Continental Presidential Plus Mastercard. Using these “no transaction fee” credit cards is the best way to save money; you even earn points on your purchases (and you can track your spending). Cash Reserves – It’s always a smart idea to carry cash if traveling somewhere remote. If you need ready money, don’t bother exchanging currency before your trip. All major international airports have ATMs in the arrivals area; and official bank ATM exchange rates via debit card withdrawal are superior to the rates of exchange counters (e.g. Bank of 62 | jumponmarkslist.com

America charges only a 1% currency fee on cash withdrawals abroad). Get with the times – American Express Travelers Cheques are as dated as $40 barrels of oil. True, the cheques come with extra security if lost or stolen, but fewer and fewer places accept them. On average, your dollar is devalued by 5-10% by using travelers cheques because foreign banks offer inferior exchange rates upon conversion. If you are adamant about using Travelers Cheques, buy them online from American Express in the correct foreign currency before your departure (instead of US dollars). Airport Exchange – If you are one of those people that physically enjoys changing currency as a right of travel passage, first verify the official market exchange rates online or on your high-tech phone. Exchange rate counters in airports prey on tourists unaware of the real market rate and often fool them with a “no commission” policy. There may be no commission per se, but these exchange rates are vastly different than market rates, resulting in large differentials against your favor. When in doubt, check XE - Universal Currency Converter (www. xe.com/ucc). In total, you’ll never be able to avoid fluctuations in global currencies, but you CAN avoid the heavy fees and trickery designed to evaporate your riches! Do You Really Need To Do Cardio? By Tom Bonanti

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re spinning your wheels and getting nowhere “doing your cardio?” It’s bad enough that life can seem like the proverbial treadmill, you don’t need to be frustrated and bored when you go to the gym too! This week, let Mark Magazine give you some tips that will put the mojo back into your cardio and help you to go from feeling sluggish and bored to super charged and rearing to go! First, let’s answer the above question with a decisive YES! Cardio work-outs are indispensable to any effective training program. They can be any activity that raises and maintains your heart rate over a predetermined amount of time, such as power-walking, biking, swimming, wrestling, martial arts and elliptical machines. By doing this, you strengthen your cardiovascular system and lower your resting heart rate. Doing regular and monitored cardio will help you live longer PERIOD! Cardio workouts burn fat. Weight training builds muscle. Any fitness regime must include both to be effective and successful! A bout of cardio will use up more calories than lifting weights over a prolonged period of time. Yet the more quality lean muscle you build, the more calories your body will burn all the time, even in a resting state. Bigger muscles make you stronger, but cardio fitness gives you endurance. Although cardio training programs can vary from individual to individual, here are some pointers that can benefit everyone. uDrink water before, during and after any cardio workout. Stay away from sports drinks that are loaded with sugar and caffeine. uYou can perform cardio on an empty stomach, preferably early in the morning if you need to jump start fat loss. But remember that jumponmarkslist.com 66 || jumponmarkslist.com 66

o

early in the a.m. your body is already in a catabolic state, so you may need to eat an hour and a half or so before you hit the treadmill so that you won’t pass out from hunger or lapse into a hypoglycemic episode. uAlways include a 5-10 minute warm-up and cool-down, consisting of a brisk walk, slow jog and some stretching with each lifting session. uMany cardio machines have heart-rate monitors that are built into the equipment. Use these to monitor your heart rate. Or, consider investing in a heart-rate monitor. Purchase a model with a timing device, especially helpful for interval training sessions. uLearn to calculate your target heart rate range in order to maximize the benefits of your workout. Ask a certified trainer about the Karvonen Method which is the most effective, but more complicated way of determining target heart rate range. In general, anyone can approximate maximum heart rate or “MaxHR” by subtracting your age from 220. For example, 220 – 40 = 180. This is the starting point for all your calculations. Depending upon your age and fitness level, determine a safe, but challenging range to work with. For example, a beginner may try a range between 55-65 percent of his maximum heart rate range for best cardio and fat burning results. uRemember to consult your physician or health care provider before beginning any new exercise, nutrition or supplementation program, especially if you are on medication or being treated for a medical condition. Need a few more tips on cardio effectiveness? Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! Tom Bonanti is a certified personal trainer and owner of Punp’n Inc Gym at 1271 NE 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale.

Thinking about selling?

Here is what two of our clients had to say about their experience:

“As a realtor myself, I hired Rick to sell my home because of his passion, attention to detail and number of buyers with obvious trust they had for him. I could see his passion and attention to detail when he showed my home. The marketing, professionalism and aggressive approach succeeded much sooner than expected. Rick contacted me and asked me if I would be happy with an “offer”. When I said yes, he asked how I would feel with more than just one! He sold my house for more than I expected, faster than I expected and the entire process was a pleasure. I cannot recommend Rick and his team highly enough… Eve Piccolo, 2010
