Yazi & Thomas – Creating an Intoxicating New Thursday Night

text Troy Mallis photos Dennis Dean You have a new party on the horizon at Dapur on Thursday nights. What is the theme of the party and when is opening night? Our grand opening theme will be based on the movie Tron: The Legacy on November 10th.

o

Why did you decide on Dapur as the location? Thomas and I decided on Dapur specifically because we absolutely love the venue, the staff and we feel that it will bring a breath of fresh air to the area entertainment wise. Edi and his staff at Dapur will be serving a late night menu all night long- 10 items that will change on a monthly basis- we don’t really have a place that serves such amazing food at such great quality at reasonable prices. We truly believe it has a tremendous potential to revolutionize the night-life as we have come to know it. Does the party have an official name? How often will the party take place? Once a week? Once a month? Yes, the official name of the party is Toxic Thursdays (intoxicate your senses). The party will happen on a weekly basis every Thursday with a different theme accompanying each week. Is there a dress code? What about cover? There is no dress code, and there is no cover unless you’re between the ages of 18-20 at which point you’d pay only $5. On occasion if we have a special performer or DJ there may be a cover but it will never be a ridiculous price. We want people to feel welcome and be themselves, it’s a venue where you can be yourself and enjoy and still have money left for the rest of your weekend. What kind of crowd are you hoping to attract? We are hoping to attract anyone and everyone. We obviously want people who are already going out on a weekly basis, but we also want to bring out the people who don’t go out anymore because they feel like it’s all been done before, nothing new and exciting for them has been offered. We’re here to change that. We want to make the toxic experience one that makes you come in awe and leave in the same manner. What will make this party different from all of the other parties in South Florida? What will set it apart? Karma! We want to give a party that infuses and tantalizes all of your senses. We want you to dream about us when you go home. We plan to have a milieu of entertainers, all different week to week. Nothing seen in this area before. We want a sense of Las Vegas/Europe caliber nightlife entertainment to be dished out at Toxic Thursdays weekly.

16 | jumponmarkslist.com

Which direction will you head in concerning music, DJ’s and performers? Our resident DJ will be Misha NuSound. We will have a mix of house, tribal, pop, hip-hop and a little bit of everything in-between, all seamlessly mixed for your ears to relish in by Misha. We will let everyone know in advance through publication and advertising when we will have guest DJ’s. Performance wise, we will have something different to offer every week. Thomas and I both believe that you don’t entertain through false advertisement as many places do, what we promise is an amazing weekly party unlike anything previously seen before. We want people to come and see first-hand just how titillating an intoxication our party will be. How did you get into party promoting and what is your idea of the ultimate party? Thomas and I have both worked at various venues in the concierge department and balance each other out very well. He’s the ying to my yang. So you could say we’ve done similar things in the industry before, but we’ve never had full creative control of a venue like this, and we will now display what our karmic retribution has to offer to the South Florida area with both of our creative juices combined. It will be interesting since we both have worked at similar venues but never together, so combined I’m sure this will be a force to be reckoned with. Our idea of the ultimate party is a place where you go to on a quotidian basis and look forward to the next time you’re going to attend while you’re still there. You want certain warmth to the party that makes you feel welcome, but at the same time an electric current that keeps your hair on its end. We know Dapur will be that ultimate party and will be showcasing it November 10th and then the weeks to come! It won’t just be Tron’s Legacy premiering on the 10th, but Karma’s legacy as well!

Unlimited Potential o

Scott Sonnon is a deserved star on the world fitness stage, and a rising one at that, explaining during my exclusive interview, “Sharing my discovery of our inherent personal power, despite social definitions of our inadequacy, has been a blessing and an honor. My involvement with fitness came as an unintentional by-product of liberating myself from childhood obesity, joint disease and learning disability… It set me on the path of alternative education, only to later discover that my so-called genetic flaws were my innate genius.” Before you think his “innate genius” reference is self-serving, think again. He went on to explain, “The irony of my life is what I’m known for. Though institutionalized in a childhood psychiatric hospital for my learning disabilities, I passed the exams to become a Mensa member. Though once being told I would never amount to anything athletically, I became an international champion in five styles of martial art, and have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Though facing violent abuse as a child, I now serve as consultant for the Departments of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense.” Scott further added, “My achievements do not belong to me. They belong to the 85% of people out there, who like myself, have to swim upstream from the shallow end of the gene pool. ‘Impossible’ is socially-defined. We are the exception to their imposed limitations. And it’s time we, as a community, stand together to redefine exceptionalism as our birthright.” Once you discover your unlimited potential, as Scott explained, “you become fearless, because you know that everything in the universe secretly conspires to your well-being, growth and success. Call it whatever name you wish. This divinity infuses every moment for me. I serve that process now. Whatever I can do to help others realize their innate limitlessness is my privilege. It’s often an uncomfortable path of discovery, but the pain of transformation pales in comparison to a lifetime of suffering.” “To transform ourselves,” Scott elaborated, “we cannot separate behaviors and actions from thoughts and attitudes. They biochemically happen like a two-way street: what you do in one affects the other. The connection of our will (spirit) to our awareness (mind) to our vibrance (body) remain inextricably intertwined like a tapestry. So, though we may merely be exercising, we affect 18 | jumponmarkslist.com

our entire world. Being a ‘flow coach’ for others, as a result, is a sacred honor for me.” So, let’s bring this down to some practical advice from Scott to me and you: 1. Everything works for two months. If you find yourself on the cycle of getting results, getting bored, getting hurt—then remember it’s not breadth of experience, but depth of exposure which matters, because it’s not about the program. It’s about you. Programs are vehicles. Your horizons are the ever-changing destinations. 2. Set two-year goals, big ones. Scary ones. If you’re not scared, then it’s not a dream. It’s just a task. Then once you have a REAL goal, break it down into eight three-month, progressive goals. Get allies and get it done. 3. Be accountable. Most people feel ashamed of their current condition. Screw shame. Screw everyone who would laugh at your willingness to transform yourself. Excise from your life those who would humiliate you, and surround yourself with those who won’t enable but will challenge you in a positive, productive manner. 4. Don’t expect perfection; embrace your falterings. Success is paved by failure, but overgrown with quitting and never starting. You WILL fail. That means that you’re sufficiently challenging yourself. Laugh. Smile. Get up and do it again. Only the unsuccessful people will laugh at you. Those who know what success involves laugh with you, because they know they’re next to fall... and know that it’s an essential ingredient in progress. Scott concluded, “I feel sad for most of the people reading about the next quickest fat-loss fad. Personal transformation is about lifestyle changes… I want people to experience permanent lifestyle enhancement (quality of life improvement)—fat-loss and muscle-gain are a natural by-product of that sustainable transition to healthy, vibrant living. And it’s an ever-deepening odyssey that they pilot, that no one else can dictate, and that any ‘coach’ doesn’t guide, merely shares how to read the map... they are the landscape... the sea... not the coach.” For more from this remarkable man, visit http://www.facebook. com/ScottSonnon.

fashion&style Versace Collides with H&M! By Eric Christian o Just when you thought the iconic house of Versace was becoming obsolete, you are in for a bold awakening! A big, loud and brash bold awakening, that is. The wait to see and purchase items fromVersace for H&M collection is soon to be over. This is the collaboration that is stirring all the buzz in the retail and fashion world! For the fashion junkies that are familiar with the legendary fashion house, expect bright prints, bold colors, and reinterpretations of the iconic blazers, leather jackets, and pants. Plus, a first for the H&M designer collaborations, expect a homeware collection too, including pillows and a hot beaded bedspread! Versace’s men’s collection for H&M is a mix of sleek tailoring and pieces with bold, eye catching patterns. Suit jackets and trousers come in either black, or pink, while a black tuxedo jacket has metallic tip trims on its pockets, and shirts have metallic wing-tips on the collars. Versace’s palm prints are used on t-shirts, as well as on thin-knit cashmere sweaters, while print is also used on velvet bombers, jeans, and even underwear. There is also a mix of classic pink and turquoise button down shirts that have matching tailored, skinny pants. Furthermore, there is a striking range of black and white geometric printed shirts, tops and t-shirts. There’s leather in the men’s collection too, with a quilted leather jacket trimmed with gold studs in the Versace classical Greek pattern, which is repeated down the sides of black cotton shorts and a rolled-sleeve t-shirt. Also, a stunning black topcoat with leather sleeves and collar. Accessories include embellished beanies and patterned caps, print scarfs, as well as hi-top sneakers, brazen jewels and dress shoes. The US and Canada will release the collection on November 19th in select stores. I got word that Palm Beach will definitely be one of them releasing the collection on November 17! The collection will be available in about 300 stores worldwide. I urge all you fashionistas that want a piece of this excitement to be at the stores at least two hours before they open! The price point for the collection is not as low as what we saw with Missoni for Target. You will still be looking at shelling out over $200 for leather pieces. T-shirts are coming in between $25 and $65 with jackets around $150. Still, when you consider a leather Versace jacket is likely to cost over $2,000, you are still grabbing a bargain! An Historic Gem and a True Fort Lauderdale Experience Aaahhh. . . those first few fall evenings in South Florida when the breezes are blowing, the humidity has dropped, and the air smells fresh and clean. That time of year when so much of the country is putting away the patio and deck furniture while we are preparing to put ours to good use. South Floridians come out of their hibernation and get ready to revel in the outdoors for the next seven months or so. Evenings like this make us want to take advantage of our surroundings and dine alfresco. One of those very recent evenings found the car making its way to Casablanca Café, that gem of an historic landmark overlooking our beautiful beach. well by the risotto, which was also prepared With mild breezes blowing and beautifully. Desert Heat: Riviera Palm Springs

One of the world’s hottest LGBT destinations just got a bit hotter. In early 2011, the Riviera Palm Springs Resort & Spa (psriviera. com, 760.327-8311) removed the bandages from a 75 million dollar facelift to the iconic Palm Springs Hotel; and the city hasn’t been the same since! Just like Timberlake brought sexy back, the Riviera is bringing Palm Springs glamour back. The eccentric and eclectic hotel pays homage to the hotel’s former glory years with a vintage luxe edge that keeps history in style. This forward thinking throwback bursts with energy, originality, and pimped out personality. Spread over vast acreage in the shadow of the towering mountains of the Coachella Valley, the Riviera Palm Springs is a retro design fantasy come to life. The chocolate and mint “face off” in the hallways honors a color palette of a decade when the Palm Springs Hotel was synonymous with the term “swingers” while the tufted headboards and the Neapolitan striped throw pillows are another example of fabulous sixties redux. The conservation piece furnishings and art in the common lounge will have you tweeting a zillion characters per second. The mirror-partitioned lobby lounge is adorned with larger than life facial portraits of Hollywood vixens, constructed from old Central American coins (think “Half Breed” Cher in silver) and then complimented with British country style Chesterfield couches and maroon shag carpets. Throw some tufted gold lounges in the mix with a glittery pool table and some wild glass chandeliers, and the gentleman’s club-insidea-disco-ball theme gets over-the-top fabulous. Head to the lobby

proper and the white patent leather seats have been sewn together to form an innovative highrise couch seat platform, topped with Victorian lanterns that reflect off the roof’s twinkling skylights. Go even further and land in the hotel’s signature restaurant, Circa 59, decked out in red leather upholstered booths and chairs, backlit lattice cutouts, and jumbo crystal chandeliers that spill onto the hotel’s renowned center of attention, the historic pool area. Yes…. this is the pool featured in the 1963 film “Palm Springs Weekend” with Connie Stevens and Robert Conrad, the pool where the Hollywood elite partied hard in the 1960s, where the Rat Pack, Elvis, Sonny & Cher would unwind and help develop a global ideology

of “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.” The hedonistic overtones of the 1960s prevail around the swimming pool, where an intoxicating mix of cocktails, sunshine, and vacation mentality catalyze days of naughty fun and relaxation. Unlike the sixties, however, there are now private cabanas, glowing fireplaces, and gays who can serve openly in the military splashing around. Still don’t expect things to get too crazy around the pool. This hotel may have a history of “swinging times,” but it’s not the clothing-optional shenanigans of All Worlds Resort (allworldsresorts.com) or Camp Palm Springs (camp-palm-springs.com). Palm Springs’ repeat LGBT guests know that there is a difference in where to stay and where to play. You stay at the Riviera Palm Springs. You play at one of the resorts with a day pass or visit the city’s prolific offerings of gay bars by night. Indeed the Riviera Palm Springs is wildly popular with a younger gay demographic for its style, funk, welcoming (and easy-on-the-eyes) crowd, and pampering essentials – exceptional spa, amazing

eats, excellent gym. There’s no shortage of quiet spots around the property to appreciate the gifts of Mother Nature, from towering trees and majestic canyons to the bluest of blue skies that dazzle with constellations come nightfall. Yet Palm Springs is so much more than this awesome historic hotel, cocktails around the pool, and trouble in clandestine corners! It is also super stargazing, great hiking, intrepid adventure, and mindboggling landscapes. Though it’s sometimes hard to break away from anything within stumbling distance of the hotel, shake off your hangover one morning or evening to go beyond Palm Spring’s downtown and appreciate the region’s natural magnificence. You won’t regret it (though you may regret that last cocktail once you’re 8,516 ft high over vertical cliffs of Chino Canyon!) For an amazing gay-friendly Palm Springs getaway, head to the Riviera Palm Springs Resort & View more travel tips: AmazingGayTravel.com jumponmarkslist.com

nutrition

By Andy Kress

Who’s fat? Not you, if you know them! Fat. Just the sound of the word makes people shudder. We have been told one of two things about fat in this life: fat is horrible for you, or fat equals taste. No one can argue that fat equals taste, because so many of the foods we love are loaded with the stuff. The statement that fat is horrible for you is further from the truth however. If you know your fats and how they react with your body and internal system, then you will know that fats are essential to your diet and your health. Most of us have at least heard about trans fat and saturated fat, as they are so glorified on the news, restaurant menus or product labels. In studies, trans fats have been linked to obesity, heart disease and other related health problems when over-consumed. Many cakes, pies, potato chips and other processed foods people love are loaded with fatty acids. These are found in the hydrogenated oils and margarine used in these products to extend shelf life and keep them from going rancid, wreaking havoc on our insides as we attempt to break down such foods. Saturated fat is not far behind in doing its damage to our internal system. Many of the meats we choose to eat are high in saturated fats, even though you can’t always see them. Butters, cheeses and other dairies can be high in saturated fats as well, so read your labels. Palm and coconut oils are very popular here in South Florida. Since both are very high in saturated fat, these should be consumed sparingly. Enjoy your treats, but use common sense and try to limit the quantity to the suggested serving size. Remember: trans fat and saturated fat are the first to show themselves at the waistline, the last place we want to see them! On the other hand, some fats are not only good for you, they are absolutely essential for good health. Monounsaturated fats are needed in a wellbalanced diet. Primary sources are olive and canola oils, nuts, and some seeds. Another excellent source (and the healthiest for you) is grown right here in Florida--our state avocado. The Florida avocado is well over twice the size as the Hass avocado and half the calories, making this a wise choice for your body while helping to support your local economy. Polyunsaturated fats from products such as corn and other vegetable oils are common and healthy for you, as well as fish oils and oily fish. These foods have two essential fatty acids the body needs to function. There are a couple of other fats not to be forgotten. Fatty acids that are derived from linoleic acids produced by Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats 66 | jumponmarkslist.com

o

are crucial to a healthy diet when used in the proper amount. These two fats play a vital role in improving mental clarity, uplifting our moods and improving our overall sense of well-being. Good sources of Omega-6 fats are corn, safflower, sunflower and soy bean oils. Using any of these oils in cooking really brings out new flavors to that same old dish, so don’t be afraid to try something new and healthy. Omega-3 fats come in a variety of different foods. Walnuts, evening primrose and rapeseed oils, as well as oily fish, such as sardines, mackerel and salmon are great sources of this essential fatty acid, which cannot be produced by the body alone. Omega XL®, a supplement from Great HealthWorks (headquartered right here in Hollywood, Florida) is a very convenient and affordable way to ensure adequate Omega-3 intake, and includes 30-essential fatty acids in each small capsule. Since it does not interact with any medications, this product is the safest supplement that you can find on the market, and the only one I personally take and endorse. Fat. You didn’t cringe so much this time, did you? Now knowing your facts on fats can mean making healthier choices in the grocery store. Your body will thank you every day. Thinking about selling?

Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience:

Recently I decided to move my business and sell my home so I met with Rick Gibson. Rick sold me my home years ago but I was a bit concerned he may not have enough direct involvement. Ironically, of three people I called, one never called back, and the other suggested a very low price. When I called Rick, he answered the phone, remembered me precisely, and was there the next day. I knew I should list with him. That day I listed he had a virtual tour there that afternoon, and sold my home in a month for more than I thought possible. I honestly thought he was crazy for the price he suggested but he made it work. He was there all the way, and made it possible for me to buy a new home and exceed my goals in what could have been very stressful. I am so glad he was there for me, and if you want the best you should meet with him before you sell. - Robert Ricard, 2011
