New Gay Generation
Photo: Dale Stine
Meet New Artist D Alexander
16 | jumponmarkslist.com
o
“…and thus began the beginning of the new race. A race within the race of humanity. A race which bares no prejudice, no judgment.” -- Lady Gaga How gay times change. In the 80s and 90s, a combative gay youth chanted “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.” Then came the young millennium gays who worked to alter their queerness, usually by morphing into muscle jocks, sporting cargo shorts and tight fitting Abercrombie & Fitch tanks. Today’s gay youth have a new take on what it means to be gay. They’re not picketing for gay rights. Nor are they manscaping their chest hair. The gay youth of today are following the creed of their leaders – Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and the cast of Glee – who call for self love and proclaim “We R Who We R” because we were born this way, baby. They’re embracing their inner sissy while simultaneously refusing to be defined by their gayness. Pop star D Alexander proudly counts himself among the new gays. He explains what being young and gay means today. What encouraged you to come out as an artist? In this industry, it’s hard to tell your team of producers that you want to write about being fierce and beautiful. The first few demos I wrote were about chicks and being fly. It came to a point where I couldn’t handle being suppressed any longer. I had to unleash the vibrant side of my personality and write music I felt connected to. Are you defined by your gayness? To say that one’s sexual preference is who they are would be silly. We have so much more to offer. Yes, we should celebrate ourselves and be prideful of our sexuality, but letting it define us is a mistake. What defines you? Pop music is my ultimate definition. My life goal is to make people feel and hear the raw emotion in each song I write. When you sing about being beautiful, what are you referring to? Being beautiful is about embracing the most amazing, deepest and sickest parts of your self. It’s a statement that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is beauty in the madness. Do you feel a gay artist has a responsibility to be out? Absolutely, especially now that teen bullying
and suicide is so prevalent. The community needs role models to empower youth and let them know its okay to accept themselves. My biggest responsibility as an artist is not the music but being an example of artistic truth. Are there disadvantages to being out today? I don’t think so. The music industry has changed so much over the years. Being honest with your crazy is what sells. Sell your honesty, sell your truth. Nobody wants a picture perfect cover boy they can’t relate to. What has paved the way to this new enlightenment? Lady Gaga has encouraged the world to shoot out with prideful colors. She is the perfect example of what an artist should be: a poster girl for self acceptance and musical art. A true artist will suck their fans into their world and never let them go until they have consumed their deepest, most darkest thoughts. Does the gay community support its gay artists? The problem I think most gay artists have is that they allow their gayness to consume their craft. Instead of writing culturally groundbreaking music, they worry about their six packs and dancing around in their tighty whities. There has to be more to the artistry. Who are some of the gay artists that inspire you? Melissa Ethridge and Elton John for their bravery in coming out at a time when being gay wasn’t as accepted. They paved the way for many artists to talk about taboo subjects. Without them, there would be no Gaga. Is there anything about yourself that you feel is off limits in your music? When it comes to my music, nothing is off limits. If I write about sex, I bare it all. What should older gay generations know about the youth of today? Past generations had to deal with a hell of a lot more prejudice, and for that, we thank them. The young generation needs to continue the fight. We need to make it so the next generation has an even better canvas to express their cultural freedom. Visit http://www.facebook.com/dalexandermusic.

‘Tis Almost The Season Top 12 Holiday Pop Songs As the temperature drops, it is time to finally say goodbye to the summer and admit that fall and winter are upon us. But along with the cooler weather (and cute winter fashions) comes the holiday season, one of the most joyous times of year. It has become a tradition of sorts for artists across all genres to release holiday albums full of covers and original tunes to add to the holiday songbook. In this issue, I’ve compiled a collection of my own favorite holiday songs. They range from secular to non-secular, established to newer artists, staples to original works, but they all have one thing in common: musical excellence.
o
12. Jessica Simpson Kiss Me for Christmas
Jessica Simpson is no stranger to holiday music. She has released two holiday albums throughout her musical tenure. My #12 pick, “Kiss Me for Christmas”, is a gorgeous original ballad taken from the album Happy Christmas, released in late 2010. Simpson sings amidst beautiful piano and string accompaniment that make this song hard to resist, especially with her evident yearning for a lover’s kiss sure to hit at home with many listeners.
11. Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson Hey Santa
The Wilson Sisters released this original classic in 1993 on their Christmas album of the same name. It’s pure pop bliss with their silky harmonies, saxophone interlude, and mid-tempo pop production.
18 | jumponmarkslist.com
10. Michael Bublé Cold December Night
The crooner of our generation, Michael Bublé offers up an exceptional original offering from his second holiday album entitled Christmas, just released in October 2011. Laden with sleigh bells, piano, strings, percussion, and an inescapable chorus, this song pretty much has it all. His signature vocals give this song an almost “old standard” feel.
9. Carrie Underwood Do You Hear What I Hear
Carrie’s take on this classic religious piece is undeniably one of the best I have ever heard. Her pitch perfect voice lends itself well to a song that requires superior vocal control. With “a voice as big as the sea”, Carrie adds yet another masterpiece to her growing collection of hits.
8. Faith Hill Where Are You Christmas
This Faith Hill original was featured on the soundtrack for How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000. The song was originally recorded by Mariah Carey, but due to legal issues, she could not release it, and it was re-recorded and released by our very own Faith Hill. It begins with only piano accompaniment until it soars to a full orchestra and Faith’s powerful voice.
7. Stacie Orrico Christmas Wish
Not as mainstream as some of the rest of the artists on this list, Stacie Orrico was still able to offer a beautiful pop ballad from her Christmas EP in 2001 when she was only 15 years old. It’s emotionally packed chorus is melodic and the bridge is gorgeously done with an acoustic solo. All around, it is a great love song for couples during the holiday season.
The song continues to build with additional instrumentation as well as McPhee’s swelling vocals. It has quickly become a new holiday favorite.
4. Celine Dion O Holy Night
The best rendition of this classic song goes to Canadian diva powerhouse, Celine Dion. Taken from her 1998 holiday album Theses Are Special Times, it is a hauntingly perfect performance with a vocal range met only by a few singers in the world today. It was structured as such to build up to an awe-inspiring finale where Celine hits a nearly impossible note for which this song will always be remembered.
3. Britney Spears My Only Wish (This Year)
Adding some delicious bubble gum pop to the list is the pop princess herself, Britney Spears. It was written by Brian Kierulf and Josh Schwartz and originally released in the Christmas compilation album Platinum Christmas in 2000. Upbeat and fun, it’s everything one would expect from Britney in her early years. Its catchy chorus and fun pop production will have people dancing around the Christmas tree for years to come.
GuySpy version 3.0 for2. Kelly iPhone Clarkson is here! 6. Sarah McLachlan Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Sarah has always been known for her angelic voice and it was perfectly matched with this Christmas classic found on her album Wintersong. She seamlessly runs her vocal range with ease and with the accompaniment of the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Children’s Choir and Youth Choir joining her midway through the song, it packs an emotional punch. Originally written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1971, it was a Vietnam War protest song that has become a standard on many holiday albums today.
5. Katharine McPhee It’s Not Christmas Without You
Katharine McPhee, American Idol Season 5 runner-up, undoubtedly has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. This original Christmas song provides the perfect platform for her to showcase her natural talent. Singing with only a piano for the first verse and chorus, the control and skill she displays is remarkable.
- Android release coming in December. -
My Grown Up Christmas List
A third American Idol alum dons the list: Kelly Clarkson. Her 2003 cover of “My Grown Up Christmas List” was the first version to make any of Billboard’s singles chart; her rendition peaked at no. 17 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart during the Christmas holiday season of 2003. Her big voice breathed life into this usually subdued song and, given her huge success on Idol, the song’s popularity was renewed.
1. Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas Is You
A new holiday standard was born in 1994 that has been lauded around the world since its premiere. Driven by Mariah’s popularity and extraordinary voice, it has managed to become a commercially successful holiday single in several countries. Its up-tempo, contemporary pop styling is melded perfectly with traditional holiday instrumentation and has since become a timeless classic. The song was even written by Mariah herself. It is truly holiday perfection at its finest.

Winter Chill Tracks
Rap Duo Elephant
Baby, it’s cold outside. Luckily, gay dance floors are fired up this winter, thanks to new blazing tracks from our favorite club artists. Here are just a few of the new numbers heating up your favorite gay clubs this winter. “Queer Nation” Elephant Scruffy Records Jackson and Coleman Vrana make up the angst ridden, twin gay brother rap band, Elephant. Their first single since signing to Scruffy Records is their most confrontational ever, taking direct aim at the rampant homophobia in today’s hiphop community. There are obvious elements of Eminem. However their rhymes avoid topics common in traditional hip hop. There is no mention of money, bling, or guns. In place of record scratching and hard pounding bass, the twins present an electro-based hip hop, incorporating penetrating synthetic beats with punk laden melodies created by guitars and keyboards. It works to give a unique voice to a whole new generation of young queer activists. “Last Drag” Traci Lords Sea to Sun The notorious Traci Lords returns to the dance floor with a catchy, full-throttle club track about the cravings that tempt the innocent to the wild side. This is her first release through independent dance label Sea to Sun, “Last Drag” is anything but a drag. It’s perfectly concocted blend of camp and vamp suits Lords to a tee proving she can be as playful as a pussycat; but when it comes to music, she is all business. The main edit is a mix engineered by four-time Grammy Award winner Tom Lord Alge. Remixes by Razor n Guido and StedE & Hybrid Heights. “I’m Your Man” Moses The first single from this out-artist takes listeners on a sonic journey into the mind of a young man who is not afraid to turn convention on its ear. Its dirty synth sound, heavy beat, and harmonies are influenced by 80s new wave pop. The song and its provocative music video explore the idea of masculinity and gender roles, demonstrating how a man can be strong and sexy in many forms. Even dressed in outfits Lady Gaga might wear, Moses packs a punch and his music is no-holds-barred honest and raw. “I’m Not Going Down” Sariah Sariah is as wholesome and well adjusted as they come, except when it comes to her

provocative song titles. The follow-up to last summer’s “All About Sex” is a shiny, digitally rendered, huge power ballad. It’s a mix of Britney, Christina and maybe even old school Jessica Simpson. Sariah takes a rather cliché subject about not being in the mood for a dead-end romance but adds a youthful vibe and playful lyrics (with double meanings) to make her message sound fresh and relevant to the young clubbers who adore her. “Who’s In My Mouth?” LaLa What makes club music worthwhile is that you can dance to it, you can make out to it, and you can get silly with it. LaLa does all that with her latest semi-camp, high-energy ditty that captures our celebrity-obsessed zeitgeist. With pop star sass, LaLa belts out lyrics that would make Ke$ha blush. LaLa may be a half-pint sized, but she is a lyrical and vocal firecracker, and her R&B laced music is explosive. “Touch Me” D Alexander D Alexander has been called the Justin Beiber of the gay dance floor and like Beiber, he and his music are growing up. This disco dance romp is a marked departure from the electronic R&B sound of D Alexander’s last hit, “Beautiful.” In this latest, the out-artist displays his flirty, passionate side, demonstrating a love affair with the dance floor. At least it’s a mutual love; his music is spinning in clubs all over the world.

By Nicholas Snow
Kardashi-Who? Until many months ago, I was living outside of the United States without a TV, and I focused my online consumption on mainstream international news. Sure, they have E! Entertainment Television all over the world, but I wasn’t watching. You can imagine how bizarre it seemed to me upon my return that American pop culture was fixated on a single family, and I’m not talking about the Obamas. Clearly, I wasn’t keeping up with the Kardashians! (Although I have really come to like Rob on “Dancing With The Stars,” but we have Carson and Chaz to thank for getting me hooked on that show.)
Nate Hill said, “Let’s get this ‘straight.’ She didn’t want to get married, she wanted a wedding,” while my friend Nelda McClaskey added, “They didn’t have a marriage. They had a wedding.”
When news of Kim’s divorce filing hit, the blogosphere went wild. Not surprisingly, my friends and followers began to contrast the Kardashian matrimonial circus to the fact that same-sex couples are still fighting for the basic human right to love and marry whom they choose. I specifically asked people to elaborate, and they did not disappoint!
Getting a bit more serious in support of samesex marriage, Megan Mansbridge expressed, “People really need to stop focusing on the fear of what might seem unfamiliar to them and get on with the business of celebrating what’s important—love! And when we really give ourselves over to this in our lives, the fear melts away and we realize that the only boundaries that have ever existed in love were put there by us. Live and let live and love and let love fill your heart.” Nelda once again responded, “Megan, you are so right. So many speak out against hate crimes but forget to defend love. Keep loving!”
o
Honey Ward from Sante Fe, New Mexico said, “We’ll know we’ve achieved equality in this country when gay people can treat the institution of marriage with as much disdain as Kardashian and company. Instead, we travel to other states and countries to declare, with great commitment and forethought, our sacred bonds to one another. Come to think of it, gay folks are better off already!” Prince Selvage III from Los Angeles expressed, “I personally think that reality TV spearheaded the rapid decline of the moralistic backbone of our society. Rampant divorce rates—beginning in the 80s—brought upon the laissez-faire attitude toward marriage and began the tarnishing of its ‘sanctity.’ The rapid decline of integrity in the media along with misguided ideals of celebrity—in today’s terms—makes the argument against gay marriage very implausible.” One person joked, “All of this started when women got the right to vote, drive and wear shoes,” while another added, “One point for us. She earned 18 million though (so she’s) not that cheap.” Vicki Blythin of Palm Springs pleaded, “Please, please, please, genie, make those Kartrashian’s disappear!” Mark Haile from Los Angeles said, “Well, on the bright side, at least they brought temporary employment to a small army of caterers, valets, et al,” adding, “I hope they tipped.”
24 | jumponmarkslist.com
Richie Leitner of South Florida stated, “I think when you are that public about your life, they are going to get slammed both good and bad,” while Elaine Church of Rancho Mirage added, “They have made a mockery of marriage! I really wish everyone would ignore them and not enable them to feel so important.”
Johann Helf, an American in Bangkok stated that it is “ridiculous that it is almost 2012 and we supposedly live in the ‘land of the free’ and some people still believe gay marriage is an issue. Get over it right wingers! These same people are constantly saying the government is too controlling and invasive but when it comes to basic civil rights they want the government to make marriage a ‘privilege’ only straight people can enjoy. Marriage is a human right, not a privilege!” Love her or hate her, Kim Kardashian may have done more for the same-sex marriage movement than anyone can imagine by living her own experience on such a public stage at this very unique and poignant time in history. Silvia Signoret sums this all up fantastically: “Per my 11-year-old, ‘not even your mother can tell you who to marry.’ Maybe we need to learn from kids.”

It’s time to put prepared sushi or sashimi dishes. Once again, those stories to bed—for good. A recent Adrian was there to guide me, pointing me visit on a Tuesday evening for dinner had me in the direction of the Unbelievable Sea Bass thinking that Galanga is back and is again ($28.00), as he could sense I was clearly in a a dining force with which to be reckoned. seafood mood that night. travel By Paul Rubio The Many Sides of Bali Part I: “New Bali”
Bali. The name alone parlays an image of tranquility, wanderlust, exoticism, and romanticism. It conjures visions of a far-off land, blessed with eternal natural beauty and timehonored culture. This island utopia, sandwiched between the Indian Ocean and the Bali Sea, captivated hoteliers more than three decades ago, who took the risk of developing property on a densely forested, volcanic sand beach in a village called Seminyak. It was difficult to predict then that, from the late seventies onward, a mad scramble for Bali’s coastline would ensue, desperately satiating the world’s growing appetite for sun-drenched bliss and cultural tourism smack in the heart of the vast Indonesian archipelago. For village elders, modern day Bali is hardly recognizable in its highly globalized southernmost reaches. This area, dubbed “New Bali” by locals and expats alike, consists of the southern mainland and a small peninsula housing the highly popular and populated regions of Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Jimbaran Bay, Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak. It is here where the majority of high-end tourism development continues, often delivering showstopping flagship hotels and iconic resorts well worth the exhausting long haul. However, limiting an epic journey within “New Bali” or South Bali forgoes the essence of Southeast Asia’s island gem - “Traditional Bali,” which we’ll explore in the second and third part of this series.
o

Anchored by the surfer hotspot, Kuta, South Bali has evolved as the archetypal holiday destination, catering to all budgets and lifestyles. While Kuta fulfills a niche for HOT Aussie backpackers living on $20/day, neighboring Seminyak and Legian house a mix of mid-range and high-end accommodations to complement the world-class shopping, restaurant and nightlife scene that have advanced this highly touristic zone. Though not recommended as a stand-alone reason to visit Bali, all visitors invariably end up at Seminyak and Legian at some point on their journey, due to its proximity to the international airport or because they are eager to experience Indonesia’s most progressive metropolis equivalent. Big-city sophistication concentrates on this small stretch of dark volcanic sands, including obligatory sunset cocktails at the legendary and gay-friendly Ku De Ta or the worldly, rooftop SOS Supper Club, and dinner at the restaurant leading Bali’s foodie revolution, Sarong. Come late night, most of the bars, gay or otherwise, are located along Seminyak’s nightlife thoroughfare - Jalan Dyana Pura. Since the main gay club, Q Bar, closed down for repairs and has yet to set a reopening date, the gay scene tends to congregate on weekends at Bali Joe and Mixwell, with their wildly popular drag shows and campy pop music. There’s even a loose version of a gay beach in Seminyak, referred to as Taman Ganesha Beach or
Petitenget Beach or Callego Beach (near the Oberoi Hotel, in front of Callego Café). It’s not the nicest stretch of sand and you’ll hardly find more than a handful of wanderers also searching for this elusive gay beach. The main problem is that lounge chairs are prohibited on the beach; and the beach itself is dangerously rough, so there’s no reason to “hang out” on the beach more than a mere stroll or amble. In general, Bali’s definitely more of a couples’ than a singles’ destination, though gay Javanese guys often make the trek here to free themselves of the conservative confines of their home island. It’s a hotspot for Asian-Western gay couples living in Asia or gay westerners experiencing SE Asia, looking for some of the world’s coolest and eclectic hotels. Speaking of hotels, the all-suite Anantara Seminyak (bali.anantara.com), is ideal for a weekend jaunt immersed in “New Bali’s” young hustle, bustle, and evolving vanguard scene. The gregarious pool scene, the crowd, and the modern luxury design stand reminiscent of South Beach’s preeminent trendsetting hotels, with the added bonus of an outdoor Jacuzzi and daybed to watch Bali’s sunsets from the privacy of your own balcony. With just 59 suites and stellar staff, the Anantara Seminyak delivers a more personalized, boutique version of its mammoth party-time neighbor, the W Retreat & Spa Bali (whotels.com/baliseminyak). Further afield, along the southernmost tip of the peninsula, The Banyan Tree Ungasan (banyantree.
com), also flaunts an ultra-glam factor, about half an hour from the rapidly beating pulse of “New Bali.” The remarkable all-villa enclave straddles a picturesque precipice, emphasizing the perfect contemporary design blend of height, light, and space. While its sumptuous fusion of outdoors and indoors echoes a constant “wow” factor, one feature indisputably impresses the most--the glasspaneled doors opening directly onto each villa’s frangipani-fringed infinity pool. Finally, sagacious beach lovers gravitate towards Nusa Dua on the peninsula’s east side– one of the only spots on Bali to sport luscious, golden and white, downy sands. The superlative hotel here, Amanusa (amanresorts.com), towers over the manicured gardens and forest patches, perched on a hillside that offers stunning panoramas of sparkling greens and oceanic blues. Unlike Nusa Dua’s recent cookie-cutter construction, Amanusa’s 32 spacious villas retain a distinctive indigenous flair, each temple-like structure complete with a full suite of luxury offerings, including the decadent outdoor shower and queen-sized bale, and private pool in nine suites. The quintessential relaxing “beach vacation” materializes over long, lazy days at Amanusa’s Beach Club, via the idyllic mingling of crystalline waters, impeccable service, and exclusivity. Next week, Part II: Bali’s Rich Interior. View more travel tips: AmazingGayTravel.com

Smoked, cured, pickled and potted meats and fish A tasty way to health problems
Smoked, cured and pickled delicacies have been around since medieval times. Discovered long before refrigeration was invented, smoking and curing were initially perfected to keep meat and fish from spoiling. It was only after man realized that with smoking came added flavor that the real trouble began. Smoked products are served at every meal-breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks--so it is hard not to be tempted. Packing in lots of flavor in small quantities, these meats and fish are powerful lures. Whether it is the bacon on your plate first thing in the morning, or a hamburger or salmon at a backyard barbeque, all of these foods add up in your system and impact your overall health. Not only are these foods high in saturated fat content (helping to pack on the pounds and raise unhealthy cholesterol levels with each delicious bite), they are also high in sodium content (a red alert for those who need to restrict salt intake— which is all of us). However, as bad as unhealthy cholesterol and high sodium are, they pale in comparison to cancer. That’s right, cancer. The big C, waiting in the wings on the back of those small and tasty smoked, cured, or pickled treats. Cancers of the mouth and esophagus as well as the stomach and the colon have been linked to eating smoked products. The impurities cast into the meats through the smoking process are the main culprit in this case, extending an open invitation to cancerous cells to begin appearing throughout the body. Over 200 different components are comprised in smoke, including alcohols, acids, phenols and several cancer-causing substances. Think about it the next time you pop a tiny cocktail sausage into your mouth. Many of the poorer countries in the world have less access to refrigeration. As a result, their
o
74 | jumponmarkslist.com
populations suffer from increased cancer in the esophagus and stomach, since their mainstay cooking methods use smoking and open flames. Fortunately, the United States does not suffer from as many of these cancers as other parts of the world, because refrigeration is used so heavily in America’s society. Nitrates are chemical compounds in cured meats that enhance the curing of salt and inhibit bacteria from growing in products. Many claim that the use of nitrates creates amino acids during cooking and digestion, causes cancer and should be banned. Nitrates also cause tumors to form when eaten in high amounts. Consuming even small amounts of nitrates can cause serious health problems inside your arteries, heart and even your brain, so it is best to limit salt-cured meats whenever possible in your diet. Dry sausages, salami and pepperonis are usually cured in one way or another--be it air dried or salt cured. Beware of the fillers added into these products, especially if you suffer from Celiac disease or are allergic to corn, wheat and rye. These ingredients are inexpensive and add taste with few calories, and are not the only filler. Lots of saturated fat gets poured into the mix as well, adding calories and artery-clogging cholesterol. Take the time to read the ingredients in these products for not all of them are the same. Some of the fillers used are organ meats, so unless the product is marked kosher, make sure you know what you are eating. While beef and pork sausages now come in reduced-fat versions, do not be fooled. This offset in fat is usually compromised by a heavy salt content. Potted meats, popular in Europe, are grouped in this category, because they not only add in more fat, they seal in the jar with a layer of fat to keep the air out, thus preserving them from spoilage. Potted meats conserve the most amounts of nutrients pound for pound, but are extremely high in the saturated-fat content, making this delicacy best left for only the occasional treat. Now that you have all of the facts on these tasty treats, leave them to just that, an occasional savory reward. Eating wisely means denying yourself nothing, but never forget to include common sense on the menu. Thinking about selling?
Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience:
Recently I decided to move my business and sell my home so I met with Rick Gibson. Rick sold me my home years ago but I was a bit concerned he may not have enough direct involvement. Ironically, of three people I called, one never called back, and the other suggested a very low price. When I called Rick, he answered the phone, remembered me precisely, and was there the next day. I knew I should list with him. That day I listed he had a virtual tour there that afternoon, and sold my home in a month for more than I thought possible. I honestly thought he was crazy for the price he suggested but he made it work. He was there all the way, and made it possible for me to buy a new home and exceed my goals in what could have been very stressful. I am so glad he was there for me, and if you want the best you should meet with him before you sell. - Robert Ricard, 2011
