C’mon A My HOUSE Mark Lowe’s Newest Club Concept HOUSE, Miami Mark Lowe of Living Room fame brings a hot new concept to Miami. His newest club venture will bring you from the street into a House. The working art project is in full swing and will open its doors to welcome you home soon. Mark Magazine sat down with the visionary to find out a little more.

o

How long have you been here? What brought you to South Florida? I’ve been in South Florida 12 years. I originally came when I was younger as a model for a photo shoot, loved it, and came back.

You are credited with turning Living Room into one of the hottest nightclubs in town. What is prompting you to go into a new venue? I’m a person who constantly needs to challenge myself artistically and creatively. Without struggle, there’s no growth. Art needs to constantly evolve. My plan was always to carry this concept around the world. Please tell Mark Magazine readers about what to expect from HOUSE. HOUSE is really a complete evolution for me. I’ve designed 13 nightclubs, and all had something that made them unique. Living Room was the beginning of the club as a home idea. HOUSE is a fully realized concept. What niche did you feel was missing in Miami? I think Miami is such a global city for nightlife. When you think of exciting nightclubs, you think of Miami. That said, the most visually spectacular clubs tend to be geared toward the straight market. LIV, LOUIS at the Gansevoort, Amnesia etc. The gay community has great options that have done very well like SCORE, TWIST, and Mova. I have great respect for these venues, especially when you consider they operate seven days a week in a very tough economy. I want to bring the most beautiful nightclub in Miami to our community. What advantages do you feel there are having a business within the gay community? The gay community has been very loyal to me long before Living Room. When I decided to open a nightclub, it was important for me to promote and build a following, I did that for three years. Those people have continued to follow me, and they are solely responsible for any amount of success I’ve had .

14 | jumponmarkslist.com

What disadvantages do you feel there are? Absolutely none. If even the most homophobic and judgmental person meets you and connects to you personally, sexuality is irrelevant. How would you identify your management approach? Iron Fist or more Flexible? I’m very much a perfectionist and can be demanding. I expect a lot, and give a lot. If a light isn’t perfect, it can destroy my entire night. The positive thing with HOUSE is I have a really good team. I’m working with a great partner Sebastian Aaron-Stigall, who has a strong management and operations background. I’m working with a phenomenal visual artist Stefan Von Fouts, and an entire production company. This really enables me to focus on what I’m good at with no distractions. How do you think the community as a whole will respond to House? What type of people do you envisage coming? I think the community will respond to the fact that it’s a truly creative space. The visuals and details don’t exist anywhere in the world. From 3D architectural mapping, 360 degree panoramic projections, kitchens as bars, and showers as VIP rooms, HOUSE is genuinely more of a work of art than a nightclub. I wanted the first club in the Wynwood Arts District to be a groundbreaking space and experience.

In your lifetime, how do you feel the gay community has changed? I think we went through our periods where everyone was trying to look straight wearing Abercrombie etc. I love the new kids coming up expressing themselves creatively. They’re blurring the lines between femininity and masculinity and their “don’t give a fuck” attitude is amazing. Lady Gaga has been a huge influence on their creativity. Do you see a positive change in attitudes towards the gay community? I refuse to see anything less. We are all human, we bleed, we die. People have no choice but to accept the fact that we are here. We are your attorneys, your doctors, your military, and your neighbor next door. Living Room is very much an open venue for gay and straight people. Will HOUSE follow the same model? Absolutely, I create clubs that are welcome to everybody who wants to escape from the stresses

of life. The best parties are mixed, with all the colors of the rainbow. Why did you not position Living Room as a total gay club? I’m a business person who happens to be gay. My sexuality is a small part of who I am, and doesn’t define me. Any decision I make is based on what’s best for business regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. If Martians came down from Mars and want a Martian party and it is successful, I’m having a Martian - o Rama. What other plans do you have for the future? Washington, DC, San Diego, Austin, Texas, Peru and Brazil. I want to spread like a porn stars’ cheeks! If you had an open check book, what business would you go into next? Who says I don’t? Exactly what I’m doing now! jumponmarkslist.com

The Many Sides of Bali Part III: The Rustic East Beyond South Bali’s crowded shorelines, life quickly changes heading east. Frenetic traffic gives way to isolated roads bordered by stacked rice terraces and lush jungle. Scenes of daily village life quickly usurp the fast food and motorcycle calamity. Circumventing the eastern coastline towards the traditional villages of Manggis, Candidasa, and Tenganan, colossal vines and palm trees vie for space along dramatic cliffsides. Secluded beaches usher in the rising tides from the Straits of Lombok. Navigating this shoreline feels like a journey back in time. Women stroll along roadsides, balancing buckets of salak (snake fruit) on their heads, and children weave delicate floral arrangements called banten canang as religious offerings for life cycle ceremonies within the village. The colors, the smiles, and the sounds – they’re all so vibrantly expressive. Many of these

o

52 | jumponmarkslist.com

traditional scenes stem for the Balinese devotion to their own version of Hinduism– Agama Hindu Dharma. This fidelity has resulted in an island of “1000 temples,” none more important than east Bali’s 11th century Mother Temple of Besakih, the inspiration for every temple found in Bali’s countless villages. Unobtrusively situated in this land of time bygone, east Bali’s most prized resort, the 34-villa Amankila (amanresorts.com) serves as an ambassador and gateway to the island’s coastal stronghold of anthropology and ecology, fostering cross-cultural interactions in nearby villages and facilitating day trips throughout the magnificent countryside. Amankila, or “peaceful hill,” is romanticized utter seclusion at its finest, tranquility in the shadow of the island’s apex, Mount Agung. The majority of guests at Amankila strive for equilibrium between tropically breezed, unabashed

pampering and immersion in Bali’s nature and traditions; and the resort offers the best of both worlds. An early morning sunrise trek to picturesque Gumang Hill or a snorkeling cruise aboard Aman XII is complemented by an afternoon of spa treatments and a beachside private candlelite dinner. Likewise, a full afternoon of exploring villages, frolicking in renowned water palaces, and bargaining in local markets, often begins with a picnic breakfast on top of the world at either of Amankila’s romantic satellite bales and later ends with a Rijsttafel dinner, a ten course Indonesian dining extravaganza. For those wanting to simply enjoy the understated elegance and outstanding amenities of the resort, opportunities for sheer relaxation are infinite– whether in-suite, beachfront, hilltop, or hillside. Your best memories may well surface as long afternoons, sampling each level of the three-tiered infinity pool or nursing glasses of fine wine at the exclusive beach club amidst a coconut grove. Next to Amankila, here in the rustic East, you’ll

also find Alila Manggis (www.alilahotels.com/ manggis), a moderately priced hotel offering exceptional value in a tremendous location. The hotel’s extensive list of activities – from treks to snorkeling trips to visits to uninhabited nearby islands – are experiential and dutifully capture the essence of east Bali. Smoking and Your Diet

Fighting the Effects with Food Smoking in society is one thing that has been around for hundreds of years. People still continue to smoke despite all of the precautions that are on the label of the product, advertisements on TV and billboards, as well as many doctors’ recommendations. Cigarettes and cigars are one of the easiest legal drugs to obtain, and they can be found just about everywhere. Most of us are aware that smoking increases your risk of heart attacks, respiratory diseases and various types of lung, throat and mouth cancer. The evidence is quite clear with the more than 419,000 deaths from smoking each year in the United States, and over 3 million worldwide. Over 30% of all cancer patients that die each year-(about 166,000) can be linked to death from their smoking habits. Don’t forget about the kiddies too. Smoking during pregnancy accounts for many health problems that young babies face, a direct consequence of their mothers’ smoking habits. That’s presuming of course that they even make it at all. Many of those babies die each year due to miscarriages, low birth weight, or prematurity. But did you know that you can fight some of these deleterious effects of smoking through your diet? I am guessing probably not. There is no diet that completely prevents all of the detrimental effects on your health, but there are ways to escape the Grim Reaper’s hold and at least limit the damage. There is strong evidence in a number of studies that show smoking can affect your metabolism and nutritional status. Substantial lowered levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium and beta-carotene have been found in the blood of smokers. Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant that slows tumor growth in the body. Having at least one daily serving of any citrus fruit or vegetables is a great way to ensure that our body is getting what it needs to fight off disease and prevent any nasty tumors from forming. Thinking of skipping out on eating those fruits and veggies and just take a vitamin C supplement instead? Think again. This can actually do more harm than good. Taking vitamin C supplements in large doses of 1000 mgs or more causes the nicotine that smokers so desperately crave to be excreted even faster through the urine, creating a more profound sensation for the body to want another cigarette or puff off of that cigar. Vitamin A and beta-carotene may also have implications in helping to fight off cancerous cells.

o

56 | jumponmarkslist.com

Increasing your consumption of the antioxidants vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E can reverse some of the deficiency throughout smokers’ bodies. You can find an ample supply of betacarotene in orange fruits and vegetables, as well as green leafy vegetables. Vitamin A can be found in liver, oily fish, eggs and fortified milk. A daily serving of nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, leafy green vegetables or wheat germ are great sources for getting a dose of vitamin E. Scientist are unsure why calcium levels can drop in smokers, but an easy way to prevent this is by eating low fat cheeses and tofu, or if eating these foods is not to your taste, you can drink your calcium with fortified orange juices and milk. Be sure to get at least 2-3 servings of calcium each day to keep your body at optimal health. Calcium is extremely important for women who smoke--even, more so if they have reached menopause. Eating cruciferous vegetables is yet another way to help prevent some of the effects of cancer that smoking can cause. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables provide sulforaphane, which may help cut the risk of smoking-related cancers through your diet. Don’t be afraid to consume 3-4 servings of these vegetables a week for best results. This article is not written to condone your smoking habit. I recommend stopping immediately, if at all possible. Many have tried and failed to quit, and for those folks, this column is written to help you be the best you can be. Remember, your best defense is to remove the addiction from your life. Your health quite likely will depend on it. Andy Kress is a nationally certified fitness trainer and nutritional counselor. Thinking about selling?

Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience:

After hearing about Rick and hearing about his great success with friends of mine, I met with him and immediately could see I was working with a pro! It was clear he not only sells a lot of homes but understands this complex area of short sales with specialized training. To my surprise, the same day I listed the property he called me with a full price offer and has been at the appraisal, inspection, and every other step along the way. I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone looking to sell their property! -Shea Smith, 2011
