‘Tis The Season Top 12 Holiday Pop Songs
As the temperature drops and snow begins to fall, it is time to finally say goodbye to the warmth of summer and admit that fall and winter are upon us. But along with the cooler weather (and cute winter fashions) comes the holiday season, one of the most joyous times of year. It has become a tradition of sorts for artists across all genres to release holiday albums full of covers and original tunes to add to the holiday songbook. In this issue, I’ve compiled a collection of my own favorite holiday songs. They range from secular to non-secular, established to newer artists, staples to original works, but they all have one thing in common: musical excellence.
o
12. Jessica Simpson Kiss Me for Christmas
Jessica Simpson is no stranger to holiday music. She has released two holiday albums throughout her musical tenure. My #12 pick, “Kiss Me for Christmas”, is a gorgeous original ballad taken from the album Happy Christmas, released in late 2010. Simpson sings amidst beautiful piano and string accompaniment that make this song hard to resist, especially with her evident yearning for a lover’s kiss sure to hit at home with many listeners.
11. Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson Hey Santa
The Wilson Sisters released this original classic in 1993 on their Christmas album of the same name. It’s pure pop bliss with their silky harmonies, saxophone interlude, and mid-tempo pop production.
14 | jumponmarkslist.com
10. Michael Bublé Cold December Night
The crooner of our generation, Michael Bublé offers up an exceptional original offering from his second holiday album entitled Christmas, just released in October 2011. Laden with sleigh bells, piano, strings, percussion, and an inescapable chorus, this song pretty much has it all. His signature vocals give this song an almost “old standard” feel.
9. Carrie Underwood Do You Hear What I Hear
Carrie’s take on this classic religious piece is undeniably one of the best I have ever heard. Her pitch perfect voice lends itself well to a song that requires superior vocal control. With “a voice as big as the sea”, Carrie adds yet another masterpiece to her growing collection of hits.
8. Faith Hill Where Are You Christmas
This Faith Hill original was featured on the soundtrack for How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000. The song was originally recorded by Mariah Carey, but due to legal issues, she could not release it, and it was re-recorded and released by our very own Faith Hill. It begins with only piano accompaniment until it soars to a full orchestra and Faith’s powerful voice.
7. Stacie Orrico Christmas Wish
Not as mainstream as some of the rest of the artists on this list, Stacie Orrico was still able to offer a beautiful pop ballad from her Christmas EP in 2001 when she was only 15 years old. It’s emotionally packed chorus is melodic and the bridge is gorgeously done with an acoustic solo. All around, it is a great love song for couples during the holiday season.
6. Sarah McLachlan Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Sarah has always been known for her angelic voice and it was perfectly matched with this Christmas classic found on her album Wintersong. She seamlessly runs her vocal range with ease and with the accompaniment of the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Children’s Choir and Youth Choir joining her midway through the song, it packs an emotional punch. Originally written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1971, it was a Vietnam War protest song that has become a standard on many holiday albums today.
5. Katharine McPhee It’s Not Christmas Without You
Katharine McPhee, American Idol Season 5 runner-up, undoubtedly has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. This original Christmas song provides the perfect platform for her to showcase her natural talent. Singing with only a piano for the first verse and chorus, the control and skill she displays is remarkable.
The song continues to build with additional instrumentation as well as McPhee’s swelling vocals. It has quickly become a new holiday favorite.
4. Celine Dion O Holy Night
The best rendition of this classic song goes to Canadian diva powerhouse, Celine Dion. Taken from her 1998 holiday album Theses Are Special Times, it is a hauntingly perfect performance with a vocal range met only by a few singers in the world today. It was structured as such to build up to an awe-inspiring finale where Celine hits a nearly impossible note for which this song will always be remembered.
3. Britney Spears My Only Wish (This Year)
Adding some delicious bubble gum pop to the list is the pop princess herself, Britney Spears. It was written by Brian Kierulf and Josh Schwartz and originally released in the Christmas compilation album Platinum Christmas in 2000. Upbeat and fun, it’s everything one would expect from Britney in her early years. Its catchy chorus and fun pop production will have people dancing around the Christmas tree for years to come.
2. Kelly Clarkson My Grown Up Christmas List
A third American Idol alum dons the list: Kelly Clarkson. Her 2003 cover of “My Grown Up Christmas List” was the first version to make any of Billboard’s singles chart; her rendition peaked at no. 17 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart during the Christmas holiday season of 2003. Her big voice breathed life into this usually subdued song and, given her huge success on Idol, the song’s popularity was renewed.
1. Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas Is You
A new holiday standard was born in 1994 that has been lauded around the world since its premiere. Driven by Mariah’s popularity and extraordinary voice, it has managed to become a commercially successful holiday single in several countries. Its up-tempo, contemporary pop styling is melded perfectly with traditional holiday instrumentation and has since become a timeless classic. The song was even written by Mariah herself. It is truly holiday perfection at its finest. jumponmarkslist.com

Rockin’ Burgers
By Tim Slivinski
No Pretense, No Ceremony— Just Darn Good Food
I first visited and reviewed Rok:Brgr about nine months ago when they were still a fairly new kid on the block and there was a lot of positive buzz about the new gastropub in Himmarshee. Since that visit, many other gourmet burger spots have burst onto the scene, and at times, it almost seems like a sort of “burger wars” has descended upon us. I decided to return to Rok:Brgr to find and juicy, it was messy to eat, but that’s part out whether my initial impression—which was of the fun at Rok: Brgr. No pinkies up here! West Coast Foodie Wonderland There’s a lot of talk about “foodies” these days. This relatively new entry to the urban dictionary has become one of American society’s most overused words, albeit with good reason. Finally we have a politically correct term that accounts for our unapologetic indulgence in our greatest fat kid fantasies, extra reason to go Paula-Dean-heavy or Mary-Kate-Olsen-light on the butter, and an excuse to take meticulous note of the ingredients and preparation of food (without being classified as clinically food obsessed). It’s no longer shameful to travel distances far and wide with the sole purpose of a personal feeding frenzy; in fact, it’s now trendy and almost mainstream. That said, in my global travels and 365-days-ayear restaurant lifestyle, I’ve found only a handful of cities anchored by such great eats to warrant a foodie pilgrimage - none more so than the San Diego area. It seems that central and northern California’s farm-to-table revolution has trickled down to the state’s southern reaches, gaining some extra personality, audacity, and robustness on the way. Think: blow-your-mind experiential gastronomy with drink lists to match. Below are three restaurants that should headline your foodie bucket list and will send you packing your loosest jeans for a west coast eating and drinking orgy. Flavor (flavordelmar.com, 858.755.3663, Del Mar). Doling out breathtaking views of the SoCal coastline through its panoramic glass windows, this Über-creative restaurant plays up the yin and yang elements of gastronomy, with acclaimed Chef Brian Redzikowski engineering some wildly new taste sensations. The meal begins with house bread and butter accompanied by a quarta of rotating salts (e.g. black garlic, honey jalapeno, sage, and basil). Next up, “raw,” and “warm” starters like the “Tartare of Hawaiian Ahi” with yuzu aioli, black garlic, and chili oil and “braised local baby beets” over a citrus-beet puree, Maytag blue cheese and toasted macadamia nuts. For

the main course - divine interventions of “surf,” “turf,” and veg, such as the “local halibut en sous vide” over rock shrimp and “Meyer lemon risotto, pancetta, pea tendril salad, and saffron hollandaise.” Flavor’s idyllic upper story location means a front row ticket for the best sunset in town, and naturally a few sunset libations not to be missed, like “Salt & Pepper,” grey goose, yellow bell pepper, lime, agave, sprinkled salt and pepper garnish and “Tangerine Jalapeno,” tequila, Cointreau, tangerine, lemon, lime, house made jalapeno puree, and a chili- lime salt rim. Bursting with “Flavor,” this is American’s raging “foodie and cocktail revolution” at its best. Grant Grill (grantgrill.com, 619.744.2077, Downtown San Diego). Grant Grill proves that you don’t need to be a newbie to be a foodie favorite. For six decades, the renowned restaurant of The US Grant Hotel has consistently reinvented its menu with each approaching season, letting the creative juices simmer through the season’s top produce and ingredients. The 3, 4, or 5 course monthly tasting menu (with or without wine pairings) offers varying degrees of indulgence, and a divergence from other seasonally returning favorites like the “Dungeness Crab Risotto,” the “Grant Grill Mock Turtle Soup” and the “Frontiere All Natural Buffalo Loin” with Butterball potatoes, Maui onion rings, King trumpet mushrooms, and Marrow gremolata. Despite an evolving menu, the
restaurant stays delightfully true to its circa 1951 roots, with the dark and elegant feel of a gentleman’s club that transforms into an old school speakeasy on weekends. It should come as no surprise then that the Grant Grill serves as a drinking institution in San Diego. Manager-Sommelier Jeff Josenhans is regionally famous for his wine and cocktail menu. Josenhans says the trick to a fabulous cocktail is “ingenuity and balance,” followed by a process of “sketching and experimenting.” Josenhans reveals that a major synergy of forces merits the Grill’s house of libations reputation; but house made syrups, reductions, and daring ingredients don’t hurt. This holiday season, Josenhans brings back the “Smashing Pumpkin” from the Grill’s Food Network fame - pumpkin infused rum, all spice liqueur, Ginger liqueur, Meyer lemon, Grand Marnier, and cardamom bitters. Now, I’ll toast to that! Searsucker (searsucker.com, 619.233.7327, Downtown San Diego). It’s a magical equation of originality plus calories at Searsucker - the colossal,
vibrant, and trendy eatery that’s still commanding a hefty wait nearly a year after opening. The menu breaks things down simply into categories of: “bites,” “smalls,” “greens,” “ocean,” “ranch,” “farm,” and “milk + sugar,” further revealing pithy descriptions of the dishes themselves, like “farm bird lollipops + snake oil + blue fondue” and “crab cake ‘carb free’.” Yet these short descriptions are loaded like a one pound baked potato! The “crab cake ‘carb free’” is indeed rich in protein, but it’s also coated in lemon aioli, tomato jam, and cilantro reduction. It’s more than a nice surprise; it’s heaven on a plate! Similarly, the “butternut” arrives as rich, squash lasagna; and the “mahi mahi” as a beautiful presentation of fresh fish over a bed of fried onions and chipotle, topped with balsamic reduction and blue cheese. No matter what you order, Searsucker is an all out love affair with food and all things caloric! View more travel tips: AmazingGayTravel.com jumponmarkslist.com

The Secret To Building Massive Guns
Hint: It has to do with working those terrific triceps! A couple of weeks ago I shared with you some excellent tips and gave you a dynamite routine to develop beefier biceps by Christmas. Follow my advice and I can guarantee your success. No doubt, bulging biceps with those to die for peaks are impressive! But the real secret to having great arms is to work harder and longer on your triceps (the back of your upper arms). Triceps make up two-thirds of your upper arm, therefore it is logical that the bigger and more defined these muscles are, the more massive your arms will look, from the front, to the sides and from behind. The triceps are responsible for the movement of extension of the elbow and produce motion of the forearm. Because of their larger size, triceps require more effort and time than the smaller biceps muscles. Hit triceps once a week using 3-4 exercises of 3-4 sets of 8-12 repetitions for strength and maintenance. Work them at least twice to three times per week using the same formula to add mass and to build them. Use free weights for triceps to give you a better range of motion and to produce a fuller muscle. Throw in a machine exercise every now and then for isolation and to break up monotony. Always make sure you get a good stretch for tris especially as you conclude the workout. Stretching helps bring out the separations and detail in the muscle. Here are some dynamite exercises that will leave your triceps feeling pumped after only a few sessions. Whenever you are working a muscle group, always include at least one exercise that will take the muscle group through its full range of motion. Close-grip bench presses will do this for triceps. Lie face up on a flat bench, feet firmly planted on the floor. Take a barbell or E Z curl bar from the rack. Use a narrow grip so that your hands are only 2-3 inches apart. Keeping your elbows close to your body, lower the weight to your lower sternum, and immediately push upwards. Always begin with a light warm-up set. Triceps extensions are a classic. Start this exercise by holding a lat machine bar with your hands 2-8 inches apart. Now press downwards from your chin until your arms are straight. Return

and repeat. Most bodybuilders keep their elbows tucked in at their sides during this movement. A few deliberately hold the elbows out to the sides and lean into the exercise. The choice is yours. This exercise can also be performed with a rope instead of a straight bar or lat machine bar. Bent-over triceps kick backs are great for isolating each of the triceps. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and hold on to a rack or bench with the other hand. Raise and lower (kick back) the dumbbell at an even rate, keeping the upper arm in line with your torso and parallel to the floor. Keep your upper arm tight against your waist throughout. Be careful not to over use your wrist as you kick the weight back and extend the elbow. Lying triceps extensions or “skull crushers,” as they sometimes called, are killers. Lie on your back on a flat bench and hold a barbell or E Z curl bar at arms length above you. Lower it slowly to the forehead and raise the bar again to arm’s length. This is a more advanced exercise and you may have to wait until your tris are ready for this one. During your workouts do not waste time. When you’re working triceps or any muscle group, remember to stretch and move around between sets. Thinking about selling?
Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience: I was very impressed with the care and assistance that the Gibson Group provided. I had to sell my home quickly and opted for a short sale. They were able to list my home, get an approval from the lender and complete the final sale in 3 months. Even though I was out of the country when the sale was approved my assigned Realtors, kept me abreast of the progress and upon my return all documentation was waiting to be signed and delivered. Rick Gibson accompanied me for the closing to ensure that the final documentation and sale was presented as we discussed in our initial consultation. The final outcome, was as promisedresults and relief. - B. Mannix, Short Sale Client
