Cold Weather Cocktails I was recently trying to recall where I had seen the inspiration for this week’s home-withfriends idea. It was one of those “Nickelodeon” or “Disney Channel” shows like “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” or “Beakman’s World”--or was it “Dexter’s Laboratory?”--that consuming cold beverages in the wintertime will lower your body temperature, so it won’t seem quite as cold when you are outside. This, of course, is the opposite of the usual advice of drinking warm drinks so your body will feel warm inside. Taking this idea of cold-inside-keeps-you -acclimated –to-the-cold-outside, grab your blender and get a couple of bags of ice ready, then tell a few pals to get out their best American Eagle™ scarves and Abercrombie sweaters, and come over for a post-work or post-workout night of Michael Buble, Bette Midler, soft Brie, and Glee. Here’s a quartet of frozen drink ideas that will inspire you to have a fun, low hassle night at home with a quartet of convivial company. Alaskan Polar Bear: I have known some fierce Bears and when January gets coldest—at least for five minutes—this libation will keep you cool and happy to enjoy the Bear Necessities. Ingredients: 1 1 1 1 1 1
oz almond liqueur oz hazelnut liqueur oz cocoa cream oz chocolate syrup scoop, vanilla ice cream 1/2 oz whipped cream
Blend all the ingredients until they obtain a milkshake consistency. Serve it up in a highball glass, garnish it with whipped cream, and raise a toast to Baloo, Gentle Ben, Smokey, and all the other bears, be they Gummi or Teddy, in your life. Amaretto Joe: More weirdness: I’m not a coffee drinker. But I do appreciate the occasional jolt of caffeine, especially if included with a dash of something more potent. This is a winning combination with an ice cream-like quality if blended or the perfect complement to iced coffee. Almond is a personal favorite (plus I understand from “CSI” that it hides the inconvenient bitter almond smell of cyanide), but any flavor of coffee liqueur or Irish cream will make a smooth substitute. Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz amaretto almond liqueur 8 oz coffee 1/2 - 1 oz whipped cream
34 | mark magazine
This can be served blended with a cup of ice, or over ice as an iced coffee. Either way, add whipped cream to taste and you’re ready to switch to Tony Bennett’s Greatest Hits, Disk 2. Donna Reed: This drink just begs to be served at a gay soirée—I mean, c’mon: with a name like Donna Reed, plus it is a twist on an old bar and party staple. Ingredients: 2 oz vodka 4 oz cranberry juice 4 oz sweet and sour mix Pour cranberry juice and sour mix into a blender over one cup of crushed ice. Blend until chopped. Add vodka and blend again until frothy. Serve in a cocktail or margarita glass, or freeze until slushy. Polar Chi-Chi: The tropical piña colada (Spanish: piña, pineapple + colada, strained), in addition to being the official beverage of Puerto Rico, has a rich and storied history. It was popular at the legendary Trader Vic’s restaurant in New York City. In the 1800s, the Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí (“El Pirata Cofresí”), in order to boost his crew’s morale, gave them a drink that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum. The recipe for the piña colada was lost in 1825 when Cofresí died. I like the piña colada variant known as the Chi-Chi, or King Henry, in which you substitute vodka for the rum. Ingredients: 1/4 cups, pineapple juice, chilled 2 oz vodka 2 oz cream of coconut Mix the vodka, juice, and cream of coconut with and pour over ice in the blender. Blend until smooth and frothy. Pour into 4 glasses. By the way, drinking cold liquids does not, in fact, lower your body temperature. It raises the metabolism as your body heats the liquid to body temperature. At the same time, drinking something hot increases the blood flow to your skin, which acts like an outer layer of warmth. Bottom line: the difference between drinking something hot or cold is so insignificant with respect to your body temperature that it really doesn’t make a difference either way, so enjoy these on a sixtyish degree day and be thankful.

Bytes and Pieces
The only thing (well, one of the only things) that separates the men from the boys is the price of their toys, and hot and utilitarian new sound-toy apps are making your iPhone and iPad into virtual musical sampling machines, enabling you to turn an otherwise catchy riff into a masterpiece worthy of Wolfgang Amadeus. These are a lot easier to learn—and take—than the piano lessons your mom forced upon you, and if you add camera and mic, you are a one-man band, like your embarrassing Uncle Sal at Christmas but with real slick sounds to back up the illest lyrics.
Here is a threesome of choice software magic-makers for discerning beat-masters and aspiring ones who just want to have fun: Smule’s “MadPad” is the company’s most-loaded sound-toy app. It enables you to build a video soundboard using everyday noises, voices, and sounds with clips you produce on the spot, turning them into percussive jams. We’re talking the stuff you find in your kitchen (pots, pans, spoons, dishes) into the base beats of a sick rhapsody. It’s the most fun you can have for $1 without having to take a shower afterwards. Smule.com. Harmonix, which produces the popular music game “Rock Band,”
takes a plunge into deep interactive waters with “VidRhythm,” a killer, techie twist on karaoke and video booths. The app gives you 20 pre-programmed songs to use as templates that you turn into your own musical canvass, like an Impressionist artist on diet pills. Acting like an All Controlling Daddy, the app gives you instructions on everything from what to say to how to behave in front of the camera. It’s an indulgent daddy, though, turning your accidental mess-ups and deliberate gaffes into music video magic. This app is so cool, you wouldn’t mind dropping a few dollars for it, but Harmonix offers it free for both iPhone and iPad. Vidrhythm.com. Look, Mom: no hands! No buttons, either,
with Mancing Dolecules’s “Everyday Looper,” a symphony-producing sampler that fits snugly in the palm of your favorite hand. Turn the crumbled paper in your waste basket into a musical instrument, adding layer to layer of pure ear-pleasing sound from the most mundane elements. Last week I couldn’t even spell “composer,” and now I am one – for just $6. Available for iPhone and iPad. Mancingdolecules.com.

Dining By RICHARD HACK
Wild East Asian Bistro 1200 E Las Olas Blvd Fort Lauderdale FL 33301 954-828-1888
In a city full of Chinese restaurants, it is always a joy to find that gem of a place that combines extremely delicious and inventive Asian cuisine with a sophisticated ambiance that beckons to the more romantic among us. Tucked away on chic Las Olas Blvd., along the Hammarshee canal, Wild East Asian Bistro offers all that and more. Unusual by design, Wild East is housed on three levels—the main dining room in a cool industrial décor softened with faux bamboo and mood lighting, or two al fresco sections overlooking the canal, where active jumping fish seem to be putting on their own aquatic show day or night, and the occasional kayak or canoe will drift slowly by as if on cue. The servers move in hushed efficiency, appearing by some zen instinct when needed, and then disappearing into the background around the open kitchen where Chef Richard Ha performs his magic amid the leap of flames and stir-fry pans. While the extensive menu mixes Korean, Malaysian, Japanese and Thai dishes, it is the abundant Chinese offerings that always seem to get the taste buds eager to explore the over one hundred options that unfold like surprises inside a fortune cookie. Divided into a gastronomical map, the menu is sectioned into “Makimono (Rolls)” “Soups,” “Chilling (Salads),” “Warm Up (Lo Mein, Fried Rice, Chow Fun),” and the “Main Event” entrees featuring “The Land,” “The Sea” and “The Field” to cover all the bases. The real challenge, of course, is choosing between the selections with poetic names like Ancient Chili Pepper Chicken--a hot number with chili pepper, scallions, and five-spiced soy ($17), Midnight Steak—bistro medallion chucks with shitake mushrooms, peppers, onions and black bean sauce ($21), Firecracker Noodles—a blend of chicken, ginger, pepper, chilis and scallions mixed atop udon, and Beijing—a half duck, cooked with scallions and cucumbers, and served with steamed pancakes and hoison sauce ($23). Our personal favorite from the entrée menu is the perfectly cooked Siam Sea Bass, which arrived at the table wrapped like a gift inside a banana leaf ($22). It doesn’t get any better if you like red coconut curry.
The place has been a Las Olas staple for three years now, and you’ll find it bustling with regulars seven nights a week. They seem to find multiple favorites from the Sake selection, which includes a wide range of brands and bottles priced from the $9 Tokuri Ikkon Blue Label Unfiltered to the ultra-chic $89 bottle of Wakatake Onikoroshi Devil Killer Shizuoka. The always fun Saketinis are abundant as well, with Sex on the Beach and Red Dragon two of the most potent ($9). If you are in the mood to experiment, skip the main menu entirely and head immediately to the colorful small-plate menu where each dish is a bargain at only $6. We always try to select several new options on each visit, although who can resist the classic Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Baby Shrimp Cups, or a heaping plateful of Sesame Chicken Noodle Salad—standard fare on every foray. With 52 items on the $6 menu, you literally can graze for hours. Among the most popular are Flaming Calamari, Crispy Beijing Duck Wings, Sake Clams, Grilled Miso Mahi, Lap Cheong Shrimp Lo Mein as well as assorted dumplings and fried rices. Owner Peter Wong has managed to do the impossible by combining a drop-dead location and a delightful atmosphere with prices that can be less than a visit to Burger King. Credit his wife Emily for some of the more inventive $6 plates including the Thai Lime Noodle Salad, a combination of skinny rice noodles, with julienned carrots, celery, cucumbers, bean sprouts and the tiniest slices of grilled chicken this side of Shanghai. Though the idea of eating dessert at an Asian restaurant may not be instinctive, don’t pass up the “Sweet Endings” menu. Although our favorite Chocolate Trilogy—white, milk and dark chocolate mousse cake at $8—seems to always be sold out, a good second choice is Marquise Au Chocolat, a chocolate sponge cake with a sweeter-thanheaven ganache at $8. Big enough for sharing, though you won’t want to after the first bite. Even the simply refreshing Asian Ice Cream Trio at $7 is an outstanding choice—red bean, green tea and mango ice cream served in a large martini glass. It gives yum a new meaning. And don’t forget that after the meal, all of Las Olas beckons right outside. End your evening with a stroll up the boulevard, and people watch to your heart’s content. Wild East is open for lunch every day except Sunday, with dinners every night of the week. They are open till midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings, with a special late-night menu.

AskArlen By ARLEN LEIGHT Arlen: My partner, who I will call “Don”, and I have been together for about four years. We are both HIV-negative, in our late 30s, and monogamous. Don and his former boyfriend, “Steve,” were together for almost two years, until cancer took Steve’s life. I love Don and enjoy a very close and physically satisfying intimacy. But his sexual relations with Steve included an additional element: after Don, a total top, reached climax, he would urinate inside Steve to “finish things off.” Don made it sound like something he would like us to do, but he hasn’t exactly framed it in the form of a “request.” When Don first told me about this 6 months ago, I gave Don a look that I still can’t duplicate: part shock, part (I hate to admit) revulsion. But I’m not a prude in any sense…I have an adventurous streak as much as the next gay guy. After trying to wrap my arms around the idea, I am still not sure how I feel about the matter, much less whether or not I’d be up to the task. What do you think? “Rod”—Hollywood Dear “Rod”: What do I think? It sounds like a pretty hot scene to me! But seriously, it’s not about what I think it’s about what you feel. As the bottom, I’m not sure why you’d have to be “up” to the task, and certainly a “piss enema” (to use a vernacular) is not going to hurt you. Urine is sterile, and, at most, you may have some cramping and strong defecation depending on the salt concentration and pH of your partner’s pee. As you indicated, if you are both HIV negative, exclusive sexually with one another, and your partner doesn’t have a urinary tract infection, water sports are safe. The bigger question is whether the urine pleasure is part of your partner’s sexual script, and you want to try to expand your repertoire to please him OR whether he is asking you to help him relive the intimate memories of a deceased boyfriend. He may not consciously know the answer to that question, but it is a discussion that needs to happen in order for you to decide what your feelings are, as well as your level of comfort with the expanded sexual scenario. If this is about having fun with you, and not about the old beau, I’d say give it a go! If you don’t enjoy it, just let your boyfriend know it doesn’t work for you. At least you will have shown you are willing to get into new sex play, and your partner can’t say you didn’t try. If this is about the deceased partner (or if that is unclear), you and your boyfriend may wish to consider some counseling to resolve and move beyond a problem that is no doubt haunting your intimate relationship. All my best, Arlen
