- Special Black History Month Feature -

WHERE THERE’S A WILLIS, THERE’S A WAY:

AN INTERVIEW WITH OUT DANCE ARTIST

chris

willis by Gregg Shapiro

C

hris Willis, an openly-gay electronic music artist whose roots began in the gospel music scene, first came to prominence on the dance charts as the voice of David Guetta hits like “Getting’ Over,” “Love Is Gone,” “Love Don’t Let Me Go,” and “Stay.” With his solo debut, “Premium/Songs from the Love Ship, Volume 1” (Veneer/Peace Biscuit), Willis comes to the fore. Primarily a dance disc, the album also shows that Willis has the ability to branch out in pop and rock directions without losing any of his cred. MARK Magazine’s Gregg Shapiro spoke with Chris this month.

MARK Magazine: Tell us about the title of your new full-length disc, “Premium/Songs from the Love Ship, Volume 1.” Chris Willis: If you remember Alanis Morrisette’s “Jagged Little Pill” [disc], that [title] is a line that she took from one of her songs. I wanted to find a catchy phrase like that to attach to my title. “Premium” comes from the line in my song “Louder” that says “take another sip of the premium,” which, in my mind, infuses something really refined, top of the line--something superior and elegant. “The Love Ship” typifies a reference to the “Titanic,” as morbid as that might sound. It wasn’t my intention to be morbid. You find buried treasure in a ship under water: classic, incredible, beautiful music that might never have seen the light of day if not for putting them in this collection. That convoluted explanation is where “Premium/Songs from the Love Ship,” volumes one, two and three come from. MM: Since this is volume one, when can we expect two and three? CW: We’re dusting off volume two as we speak. I have an enormous collection of songs that we’re choosing from, and continuing to write. I’ve just returned from a writing trip in Paris. Volume two is in process, and hopefully releasing in spring. I hate to set dates because they always change. Volume three: possibly later this year, if not the first of next year. MM: Very ambitious! CW: [Laughing] Thank you.

magazine 28 | mark 28 | mark magazine

MM: Including the four remixes, a majority of the tracks on the album are in the dance music genre, similar to your early work with David Guetta. How would you describe the role that Guetta has played in this chapter of your music career? CW: I love David Guetta so much. He played an enormous role influencing not only the work I do now, but the work I plan to release in the future. Until meeting David, I was heavily involved in gospel music. I had recorded several albums, and had sung back-up for just about every artist that came out of Nashville. Needless to say, meeting David was a major change, a major revival of just about everything that Chris Willis is about, plus more. The opportunity to explore a brand new art form that I knew nothing about that exposed me to the broadest, global following. It shined an incredible light on my vocal ability, melody writing, and songwriting ability as never before. I still continue to participate in the electronic music genre, and I have witnessed an incredible evolution for other artists--Usher, Nicki Minaj, Kelly Rowland--and it continues to be a part of my musical and creative evolution. MM: With the exception of your cover of “Stand By Me,” you cowrote all of the songs on the disc. What is your contribution to the songwriting process? CW: All the songs on the disc began with a track. Most of the tracks were presented to me, which is one half of the collaboration. I take the track, listen to it, and dissect it. I play the piano and go away from the track for a moment, and create a melody that matches the key elements of the track and puts them in a range that is polished and bright and high as it can be, so that people in the audience or in their cars can sing along. I try to create a lyric that fits the melodic structure. [Maybe it] has an incredible message, or a message of love, or a simple, ‘no-brainer’ kind of message. Nonetheless, I always try to craft the message, the lyric, and the melody so that it complements the beautiful tracks that I’ve been given. That can range from an hour and finishing the song in one sitting, to several days and several versions and several sketches until I arrive at the final version of the song. It’s a process that I enjoy. These songs are all my children, they’re all my babies. I’m always excited to hear what happens in the final forms and reminisce about where it came from in the beginning. MM: Speaking of messages, “Faded” is what I would describe as a hardcore break-up song. CW: [Laughs.] MM: Have you had a relationship that drove you to such extremes, or was it based on what you’d heard from others? CW: This song was really fun to write. It was written with Kimberly Cole and Jean-Yves [Ducornet], a writing team in L.A. We stumbled across the concept for “Faded” and built the story around it. I’m in the clubs so much, and so much of what we do in electronic music is designed for the party, the after-party. The lifestyle of clubbers and the commitment to the club scene is rife with break-up, make-up, and love stories. This is just homage to that sort of story. I hope that I never have to feel that I need to drink my pain away. I think I’ve come close a time or two. It’s something I think everyone can identify with: the feeling of wanting to wash your cares away, so to speak. MM: Of all the songs to cover, why did you choose to record a version of “Stand By Me”?

CW: Nicola Fasano invented this concept and had this reinvented track of “Stand By Me.” I happily collaborated with them on the song. It’s always been one of my favorites. We decided this would be a good opportunity to release the song on my album as well, and to appeal to the audience that gets overlooked in electronic and pop music. I grew up on music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. To include this updated, new-and-improved “Stand By Me” was a wink to my parents and their peers, and all the music lovers who love classic music. Hopefully they’ll appreciate our take on this song. MM: You make good use of a sample of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” on “Too Much in Love.” Were there other samples in consideration for the track or was this always the one you wanted to use? CW: “Too Much In Love” had a really interesting beginning. It was the brainchild--in terms of use of the sample--of one of my managers. I’ve always been a huge fan of Lenny Kravitz and the Rock-and-Roll/Pop sensibility he brings to it. We jumped on this track because I felt the immediacy of the sample would connect with the audience. It was [either] that sample [or] no sample [laughs]. By the time the song was finished, it had evolved from an electronic form to more Rock-and-Roll. That vocal on top makes for, I think, an evolved form of what I started with David [Guetta], and moved it into a place that makes me happy. It pays homage to Lenny Kravitz, of course, and to “Journey” and “The Police” and Phil Collins, and all those crooners from the 80s who had that rock-infused edge. MM: What are the chances of a Chris Willis/Lenny Kravitz collaboration somewhere down the line? CW: In my dreams, it’s already happened [laughs]. My dream is the Super Bowl in 2013, with Lenny on guitar onstage and me singing in the band. That would be my dream of dreams. Who knows? Stranger things have happened. MM: I think your Pop side comes to the surface on “Be There.” CW: My inspiration for that song was Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” I was lucky enough to see her perform in Atlanta. It was a contrast between everything she’d been doing with the “Black Eyed Peas,” and then she came out with this mellow pop ballad. I wanted a moment like that. I wrote this song, pitching it to another artist. But my management thought it was a good song for me and we kept it [laughs]. I’m glad that we did. It gives me a chance to step out of that electronic mode and do something acoustic, gentle, and tender. [“Be There”] is one of those anthems for anyone who feels left out, or hurt, or broken. It could be a father or mother [singing] to a child or it could be a lover to a lover. ‘I’ll be there for you no matter what happens, tell me where it hurts.’ It’s that kind of theme that I love so much. MM: Are there plans for a tour? CW: Absolutely. In the electronic world, touring mostly happens on the weekends. Being that this is just after the New Year, we’re still formulating dates. They’re on the books and we’re confirming. I would love to do a two-month tour on a bus, like they did back in the day. For now we do one-offs. I fly out to Russia or Brazil. We leave on a Thursday, and I’m there for the show on Friday, back to America on Saturday, and sit for four days before flying back out. So I’ll be touring right on through the middle of this year. Keep your eyes locked on Facebook. Dates will appear [laughs].

bytes& Pieces T

he recent hacking of iPhone bathhouse app Grindr has drawn attention to the (lack of) security on a multitude of cellphone apps. Cellphones have gotten “Terminator”-smart, meaning they’re now more like computers than phones. This makes them vulnerable to the not-so-tender mercies of global hackers. Some security experts note that more than a million cellphones have been hacked, breached, and otherwise comprised, and 2012 could be the Year of the Smartphone Hacker. Thinking about how much personal information is stored on your CrackBerry could keep a body up at night. Unprotected phones are an invitation to cybercrime, and a catastrophic loss of privacy, to say nothing of placing you in potentially real danger. Hack attacks like the “man-in-the-middle” enable a cyber-infiltrator to read your text messages, follow your Internet browser activity (including banking transactions), listen to your phone calls, and even transmit audio and video when you think your phone is turned off, with the potential to make your most intimate moments LIVE at FIVE. To protect yourself requires the caginess of a counterterrorism expert, but there are some steps you can take and behaviors to avoid. Using a 3G network instead of public Wi-Fi leaves you less vulnerable to the wiles of hackers. If your phone has one, changing your SIM card every now and then makes your phone more difficult to target, because SIM cards digitally identify a cellphone’s user to hackers as well as to cellphone providers. Malicious software, or MALWARE, is often embedded into apps by hackers, so that when the app is downloaded, the malware invades the cellphone and steals data. If possible, avoid apps and programs that don’t originate from a recognized developer

such as Apple, Microsoft, or Google, and stay away from free versions of popular apps which can contain malware embedded in their codes. Make sure you have an Anti-Virus app such as Norton or AVG, and download their updates regularly. Many are free.

Some signs that your smartphone may already be infected or hacked include shortened battery life, taking too long to receive e-mails or texts, and ungodly-slow speed while surfing the Internet. Unexplained charges on your bill are another clue.

An Apple a Day Certain obnoxious kids used to lug an apple to school in an effort to suck up to a favored teacher (and maybe squeeze a few more points out of the next test). Apple, Inc. wants the Glee Generation to update the theme, ditch the lunky textbooks, and bring an iPad to school instead. The House that Steve Jobs Built has rolled out three new software items that put the focus on education. iBooks 2 is an update of Apple’s electronic bookstore, which enables students to download their textbooks (much easier on the back, that way). iBooks Author is a Mac program that includes Apple templates that publishers and authors can alter to create textbooks. The iTunes U app lets teachers create digital curricula and distribute their course info to students—who says learning can’t be fun? These tools are the revolutionary next generation of learning apps. Best of all, they’re priced FREE. Apple says its electronic versions of high school textbooks will cost under $15, compared with a $100 price tag for many titles. Now we just need the schools to start passing out iPads.

Nutrition By ANDY KRESS

Juicing and Smoothing: A Sip Away from a Healthier YOU!

J

ust about everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and a vast array of other cancer and disease-fighting substances. Because of these facts, physicians and holistic healers alike will tell you to eat more fruits and vegetables, especially in their raw form. (Abstaining from processed fruits and veggies is healthier since most have lots of salt and sugar added to preserve them.) Most Americans don’t eat enough of the fruits and vegetables they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, of course. In order to comply with the food pyramid, you would need to chomp and chew your way through six-to-eight servings each and every day—a near impossibility with our busy lifestyles and work schedules. This has led people to turn to a better and faster way of downing these nutritious foods without sacrificing precious minutes to dice, chop, peel and pick their way to health. Juicing is one way that ultrabusy, health-minded individuals are using to keep up with eating raw foods. Blending fruits and vegetables in a juicer is perfect for the person who is always on the go. One advantage to juicing is that more of your diet can come in raw form. Doctors and naturopaths contend that the food pyramids recommended amounts of raw fruits and veggies are inadequate, so juicing is one of the top alternatives to solve this problem. Juicing helps boost consumption of the large quantities of raw fruits and vegetables that the doctors recommend for optimum health. Additionally, by blending your fruits and vegetables this way, you provide yourself with a low-calorie treat that’s quickly absorbed by the body and supplies you with great energy throughout the day. Juicing also gives you a chance to be creative in the kitchen. With so many different fruits and vegetables with a myriad of flavors, your palate combinations are almost endless. Pairing the tastes that you like is an easy way to get the ball rolling. After awhile, it will be like second-nature pairing and blending the tastes you enjoy, or experimenting with new combinations that are

distinctly yours. Whether it is a fruit or a veggie blend, know that your body will thank you for treating it to such a healthy cocktail. Smoothies are another popular alternative to ensure that you get enough raw foods in your diet. Smoothie shops are popping up everywhere across the country. This recent trend has turned into an epidemic that is out-rivaling their ice cream competitors. It’s a new way to get that sweet and cold sensation without guilt. It’s no wonder that heads are turning in this healthy new direction. Replacing heavy cream with healthy yogurt-blends cuts the calories in half on these tasty treats. Throw in some of your favorite fruits and you now have yourself a flavorful new mouthwatering hit. Using low fat or non-fat unflavored yogurt is not only healthier for you, but it will infuse with the taste of the fruits or veggies that you are blending. Herbs and spices can be added to enhance both taste and nutrition. Normally available in dried form, essential herbs and spices are more than just taste enhancers. They actually provide vital nutrients that the body needs to maintain an active metabolism. The creamy taste of the smoothie helps slide down those herbs and spices, while satisfying another important instinct—that urge to consume fat. There’s no denying that gravies, sauces, milkshakes and creamy desserts are tempting to us all. Vegetable smoothies with herbs taste fattening (even though they’re not), and allow you to spice up your life while getting what the body needs and naturally craves. Whether you are juicing or having a smoothie, just remember to choose your ingredients with care. The more nutritious the ingredients you put in your body, the better your energy output will be. Knowing the facts is your first step to staying healthy the fun, easy way.

Adam&Ease

By ADAM STRONG

Super Fabulous he year’s biggest game takes place this Sunday. The good news is that T you don’t have to know the following: • Super Bowl XLVI will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium (in Indianapolis). • The six-time AFC Championshipwinning New England Patriots will face their NFC rivals, the New York Giants. (You don’t even have to know that “XLVI” means “46” in old Latin—how many ancient Romans do you plan to run into before the Big Game, anyway?) That said, there are a few things you’ll need to know if you plan to host a killer Super Bowl soirée, without breaking the bank and ensuring that everyone has a gay old time.

and salsa, sodas, etc. Make sure you have plenty of ice and an ice chest dedicated solely to ice will come in handy. Have ice buckets around to fill with ice and bottles of beer or wine. Choose napkins, paper and plastic plates, and such that have a Super Bowl or NFL theme. The menu should reflect the fact that most people are going to be watching the game, and as host, you don’t want to be lugging trays of food back and forth. Plan accordingly with appropriate snacks and tapas-type selections.

Pre-Game Decide who you want to have over: Is this going to be a small affair with half-a- dozen buddies swilling beer and glomming Tostitos or will it be on a grander scale? More LGBT families now include children. Should you invite parents to bring their kids?

Send Invitations with a Game-Day Theme If you are sending hand-made invites, use construction paper to make them football-shaped. If you’re emailing them, get your guests into the spirit of Super Bowl and ask them to “complete the pass” and RSVP their plans to attend.

Football is a Team Sport Give out player assignments, and ask your guests to bring something, whether the beer, some fun wine flavors that will compliment the rest of the spread, chips, dip

Show Your True Colors Wear a referee-style shirt (vertical black and white stripes are slimming, too!), and ask your guests to wear team jerseys and colors.

40 | mark magazine

Turn Your House into a Stadium Using football-themed props and items (large and miniature helmets, bullhorns, ref whistles, jerseys, trophies, pennants, team mascot dolls, mini-footballs, etc.), you can turn your home into a gridiron. Line a football helmet with aluminum foil to serve chips (but use a separate container for dip and salsa!). Use a green tablecloth to create a football playing field, complete with drinking straw goal posts, with plates and cups that reflect the team colors. In this case, both the Giants and Pats use red, white, and blue in their color motifs, with New England also employing a shade called “New Century Silver”—tell me that wasn’t created by one of the “family!” Make sure there are plenty of pillows, throws, Afghan rugs, and the like for your guests as they settle around the TV for the game. If you can, have all the sets in the house tuned to the game, for the convenience of guests making trips to the kitchen—or the water closet.

if you serve it in individual servers and let your guests pad their own butter or sprinkle their own combinations of seasonings and condiments. A cottoncandy machine will also bring out the kid in everyone. Chocolate, cheese, and fruit fondue are also fun eating ideas that double as activities. Post-Game Have a supply of large trash bags on hand to make clean up hassle-free. After the final pass has been made, and the last tight ends and wide receivers have left the field (we’re talking about the game here), you can sit back and bask in the satisfaction of a party well-done, and the knowledge that you are unquestionably the most fabulous commissioner in the Gay-F-L.

Halftime While the musical and marching cast of “We Love Everything!” entertains the stadium crowds during the halftime show, play football and sports trivia with your friends, and award prizes for the winners. Popcorn, Get Your Hot Dogs! The rule of thumb here is quantity. You want to have foods that will fill and be easy to serve. Think pots of food like chili, or sweet-and-sour meatballs, which you can prepare in a slow-cooker overnight. Hot dogs and hamburgers are also easy favorites to prepare and will be gone in no time. Popcorn is filling and fun, especially

T

hink Matty’s on the Drive, and you’ll no doubt conjure up visions of a popular smoke-free gay club, packed with patrons spilling onto the parking lot at 2426 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. But there is a well-kept secret side of this house of 75¢ well drinks and chicken wings—a rather amazing New York-style deli that serves incredible fun food from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. seven days a week. Those hours of operation alone would be enough to impress; yet, it’s not until you delve into the vast deli menu that you realize that there is something even more remarkable about this place. Legend has it that Manhattan is haven to the best delis in the world, but Wilton Manors manages to give its unique twist to the home of matzah ball soup and pastrami, while adding a few Florida touches to please the locals. The true assay of any deli is its corned beef, so we ordered a Reuben Sandwich on seeded rye to put the place to the acid test. At $9.75, including a sour pickle and side of fries, cole slaw, potato salad or cup of soup, we waited in anticipation, admittedly fearing the worst. When we think deli, we think of white octagon tile floors, ceiling fans, surly waiters, and signed photos of famous patrons on the walls. Matty’s is, of course, first and foremost a bar. Two months ago, the owner, Matt Auslander, expanded the joint by taking over the storefront on the west of the two-year-old club, adding a kitchen and seven tables, along with another service bar. No intimate boîte, the bright light from the street beams in through the open door and plate glass windows with such pride that there is no hiding either wrinkles or flaws from view, or the fact that this is still a gay bar. However, when our Reuben arrived, in this case accompanied by a side of onion rings ($1.50), it carried itself with a certain pride (part of a legacy that’s been around since the first Reuben was served in 1914) that any concern about ambiance was put aside and our attention turned to the large sandwich before us. The bread was toasted to crisp perfection, the ideal envelope to hold the melted Swiss cheese, mounded sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing, and thinly sliced, Angus corned beef that certainly looked the part. The first bite removed any thought that Matty’s Deli is a wannabe.

42 | mark magazine

The corned beef was wonderfully steamed, and generously marbled, ensuring that any concept of low-cal would be saved for another day. This was a messy, delectable ten-napkin treat that we rated among the best Reubens we’ve ever consumed. And the onion rings kept pace, with a crispy crust and favorably moist inside that gave new meaning to gluttony. Witnessed from an adjoining table, the hot pastrami sandwich ($9.25) looked equally as addicting, stacked high and thick on pumpernickel, cuddled by a pile of fries the color of caramel corn. While we would like to be able to report on the nearby ¾ inch-thick blue cheese chicken quesadilla ($8.25)—a nod to non-deli fare that can be found on the back side of the menu—the guy who ordered the meal wafted it down with the speed of a experimental jet, leaving only a vapor trail of delectable aroma behind. Also on the menu, deli-side: Turkey Club ($9.75), Hot or Cold Roast Beef ($9.25), Corned Beef, served as straight as it gets at Matty’s, with brown mustard ($9.25), Homemade Tuna Salad, on assorted bread or as a wrap ($9.25), French Dip, dripping with Au Jus Sauce ($9.75) and Fried Potato Pancakes ($5.50). Less traditional, but no less delicious we hear from our servers Steve (look for the clear blue eyes) and Drew (instant smile), are the Angus Burgers ($9.25), Veggie Burgers ($8.25), New York Strip Steak Sandwich (11.75), Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($8.25), and an old-fashioned Kosher Beef Dog, complete with relish, sauerkraut, chili, cheese and sautéed onions ($6.75), plus salads served in bowls the size of Texas. A visit to Matty’s Deli in Wilton Manors is to return to a time when calories counted but not as much, and cholesterol wasn’t invented. Make it a fun weekly stop on your schedule and tell ‘em Mark Magazine sent you.

Travel By PAUL RUBIO

R

ising above the caricature of media punching bag, Mexico is finally regaining its stature as a truly majestic nation, eager to welcome tourists south of the border. And thanks to some recent laws and court rulings, today’s Mexico holds very special interest for LGBT tourists. After Mexico City legalized gay marriage in 2009, Mexico’s Supreme Court gave “two snaps”--in Z formation-to the Mexico’s 31 other states a year later, mandating legal recognition of same-sex matrimony. Now more than ever, LGBT travelers are heading south to explore a land of astounding archaeology, diverse cultures, and luxury hotels, and show their support for a country with a progressive stance on LGBT issues. One of the best things about modern Mexico is that it’s filled with top-notch luxury enclaves that easily rival the Caribbean’s most treasured islands. Case in point: Mayakoba, along the Yucatan Peninsula’s “Mayan Riviera.” Located five miles north of Playa del Carmen, Mayakoba doubles as a private community and ecological reserve, housing three upscale hotels, residences, and plenty of biodiversity across 1,600 acres. Flanked by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the east and thriving mangrove colonies to the west, Mayakoba’s super ”green” hotels are built around complex labyrinthine waterways that connect the Yucatan’s underground sinkholes and the deep blue sea. The opening of the first resort on premises in 2006, the gay-friendly Fairmont Mayakoba, ushered in a new era of luxury tourism for Mexico’s Mayan Riviera. The resort’s wide range of room product, from comfortable classic “Fairmontview” rooms in the principal towers to colossal, oceanfront and lagoon-front casita suites, present options for both couples and families to revel in the beauty and amenities of this environmental paradise. Most notably, the outcropping of 34 romance-oriented suites along the resort’s eastern perimeter underscores the global “hotel-within-a-hotel” trend, offering a more private experience while having the resort’s full offerings at hand. Although it’s hard to escape the indulgences of these elegantly understated suites--like the 24-hour butler

service, private plunge pools, sprawling al fresco terraces, and glass-heavy, jaw-dropping mega-bathrooms--the chic common pools, cabana-ready beachfront, and ecological boat tours are not to be missed. Moreover, you’ll want to peruse the greater resort to sample the cuisine at its four fabulous farm-to-table restaurants: the authentic Mexican eatery La Laguna Grill and Bar, the award-winning Las Brisas, the sushi-and-cocktails-driven Lobby Lounge, and the fine dining steakhouse, El Puerto. Savvy travelers should opt for the new “Appetite for Luxury” package, which includes all food and beverage on property, excepting El Puerto. This arrangement prevents any guilt (caloric, financial, or otherwise) associated with enjoying that third tamarind margarita, a second bowl of fresh ceviche, and an order of lobster summer rolls, either on the beach or at the swim-up bar (between meals of course). To feed those urges for self-pampering, the 20,000 square foot Willow Stream Spa is a veritable spa-topia, best appreciated in the couple’s treetops suite, followed by lengthy soaks in the mineral pool, and capped off by a cocktail around the adults-only infinity pool. Golf enthusiasts delight in the 18-hole Greg Norman-designed “El Camaleón,” best known for the annual PGA Mayakoba Golf Classic at the Fairmont. Nature buffs will want to rise early for the morning bird-watching tour. More than just providing love nests for couples, the Fairmont Mayakoba welcomes alternative families. In line with its kid-centric ethos, the hotel shows as much love for kids as it does for the grown-ups. Each day, kids 4-12 years old get three complimentary hours of fun-filled activity at the dynamic Discovery Club & Adventure Camp. From toddlers to teens, they can make new friends at the four family pools, including one with a water slide. The hotel also generously comps kids up to 5 years old during family meals.

Fitness ByTOM BONANTI

Working Out Pain Free: It’s Easy! H

ave you ever wondered if you are performing an exercise the correct way, or if the workout you are performing is causing you harm? Physical pain is one way your body lets you know that something’s wrong. The old saying “no pain, no gain” is a bunch of macho horsesh**. When something hurts, stop doing it immediately, then breathe deeply, drink some water, and assess the situation before continuing your workout. Light stretching of the sore area is also recommended. Working out is supposed to improve your quality of life as you build muscle, stamina and self esteem. It’s not meant to debilitate you every time you go to the gym. A certain amount of muscle soreness can be expected when you begin a new program or beef- up a routine with new exercises. This soreness, known as delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), usually follows the workout and lasts for a day or two. If pain persists or grows worse, don’t be too “brave” to consult with a physician. When sudden, shooting pain immediately follows a movement or muscle contraction, you must stop at once, or you may risk serious injury. Be aware of your body as it moves and how much you can realistically push yourself in order to see and feel progress. This is especially true for individuals with preexisting joint or muscle issues. You don’t want to do something to make it worse. For certain conditions, by all means consult your doctor before beginning or restarting a routine. I’m referring here to things like chronic neck pain, shoulder impingement or rotator cuff issues, chronic low back pain, and chondromalacia (wearing of the patella). Once you’re diagnosed and treated for one of these ailments, only with your physician’s approval should you return to working out. Most doctors will tell you that the correct progressive exercise program can greatly improve or even eliminate many of the above conditions. The key is to always workout safely and effectively so that you won’t incur injury in the first place. Whether you are a healthy fresh-faced rookie or a seasoned pro with an injury or two under your belt, there are a few steps you can take to keep strong and pain free for years to come. • Don’t forget the importance of a 5-10 minute warm-up before you train. A brief walk to the gym from home or a few minutes on a recumbent bike can rev-up your metabolism and

warm-up joints and muscles preventing injuries. • Stretch lightly before lifting weights. Save more intensive stretching of the muscle group you are working for between sets or after your overall workout. Greater flexibility means less chance of injuries during bodybuilding. • Weight training should be progressive. Begin with a light warm-up set, and then progressively challenge your muscles with the next few sets as you add weight gradually and carefully. Keep a journal of the weight you lift. • Always watch your form as you perform each exercise. Be careful. Get a good contraction of the muscle during the positive or concentric part of the motion and slow down on the negative or eccentric phase of the repetition. Make each rep of each set count. Your body is a work of art, and your workout is one the most important tools you have to shape and sculpt it the way you like. Make sure to perform your exercises in a safe manner in order to prevent injury and build a body that is symmetrically balanced with strength and flexibility.
