you looking for an outlet—not for your A resexual frustrations (who doesn’t have those?)—
but for your smartphone, eReader, or tablet? Are you up to ‘here’ (ahem: my eyes are up here) carrying around flimsy chargers which stop working just when you have less than half a battery-indicator bar left? Powerbag by HoMedics may be the ‘charge’ you need. Just like the name suggests, Powerbag is a power source to charge all your gadgets, even if you are constantly on the move. Available as a briefcase, backpack, or messenger bag, Powerbag lets you leave the multiple chargers at home, with its built-in battery and charging cables. It also comes equipped with an extra USB port so you can plug even yet another charging cable. Batteries range from 3,000mAh to 9,000mAh, and you can swap them out to keep your techjones fed all day long. Prices: Backpack models range from $139.99 to $179.99; Briefcases (which resemble in-name-only the one your father—or you—carry) range $149.99 to $249.99; Messenger Bags run from $139.99 to $179.99.
New Parent? New App Gay parents are nothing new—just ask Oscar Wilde, or Alexander the Great. But apps that helps gays to parent? Software for your phone can help make parenting a breeze (okay, you can stop laughing now). Apps offer parents everything from finding healthy local dining choices, to keeping baby soothed with cricket chirps or the sound of the ocean, and choosing family-friendly activities that are nearby. WebMD Baby is a new app—available at the moment just for Apple devices (the company plans an
Android-version release in a few months) —that gives users access to the vast library of parent-friendly, medical-related content of its namesake, WebMD. The software includes volumes of guidance on a range of parent-related topics, from information on children’s emotional and physical development, to advice on how to handle a difficult toddler, and practical medical advice, including a section on “Illnesses and Emergencies,” just like you find at WebMD.com. The app’s roughly 600 tips, 400 articles, and 70 videos provide a literal hands-on treasure trove of golden info to give the most inexperienced dad tools to take on the Terrible Two’s and beyond. There’s also a “Baby Book” section to record and store videos, as well as Precious’ most-precious moments through pictures and notes which are stored in the phone, so they remain even when the app is less needed (like when Junior gets into grad school). Sticker price: Free! Baby Connect is another app, offering parents more tracking options that WebMD Baby, although less info and professional guidance. The app has a separate page for individual kids, which lets you keep track of things like their vaccination schedule, medicine requirements, and temperature, as well as more “mundane” things like Timmy’s moods and Hannah’s activities. A “My Location” button lets you record where you and baby were at special moments, like the first time Baby Sebastian spits up on Gram-Gram and Pee-Pah. A “Vaccine” section reached through baby’s home page includes a list of common shots, and likewise records the appropriate inoculations baby has had. Other sections detail subjects including nursing, weight, potty training, and solid foods. At the moment, Baby Connect offers more features than WebMD Baby, although it can be a bit trickier to navigate through the various menus and sections. It is also the only parenting app currently available for iPhones, iPads, Androids, and Web. Sticker price: $4.99.

AskArlen By DR. ARLEN LEIGHT
Dear Arlen: When do you think is the right time to consider moving in with someone? My boyfriend and I have been dating for several months, and we have started making the “noises” that indicate something more permanent may be on the horizon for us. Friends tell me that there are some things we should be paying attention to concerning our compatibility to live together. I have heard everything from “make sure he’s as neat and cleanly” as I am to “how can you date somebody who’s a registered (opposite political party than me)?” I don’t want to sound like “Paulie Pollyanna,” because I do know that there are lots of intangibles that go into building a relationship, but does it really make a difference, big picture-wise, if he smokes cigarettes, but I don’t?
“Paul”
Wilton Manors
Paul, pposite political party?” If he’s a Republican, forget about it! In seriousness, though, it sounds like, at this point, you are dealing more with issues of compatibility for a relationship than the question of moving in. The first year or so of a relationship is so much about passion that we tend to “back-burner” the matter of long-term compatibility, and overlook even the most potentially glaring of red flags. Certainly people with differing political affiliation are able to live together (for example, the power couple Mary Matalin and James Carville: she a highly-placed Republican operative, he a well-connected Democratic power-broker), and smokers and non-smokers can cohabitate. However, a general rule of thumb is, if you’re not sure, then you’re not ready. According to relationship guru Harville Hendrix, it takes about 18 months before we really even begin to experience the inevitable tensions that are inherent in a passionate relationship. Knowing that both partners are willing and able to engage in dialogue about their true feelings and resolve conflict is necessary for successfully living under one roof. If you are just “dating for several months,” then moving in together is likely to be premature. Love, relief of financial stress, wanting to ‘play house’ and “my lease is up next month” are not good reasons for moving in with someone. Compatibility, commitment, ability to express difficult emotions, and dialoguing to resolve conflict are key. What’s the rush? Many men find their relationships work best with some built in-space. Some couples take 10 years to make the decision to move in together; others never do and have wonderful partnerships.
Cohabitation is not some ideal model that works for everyone. Take your time. Ask yourself why you want to live with this man. If the answer is to deepen the intimate connection, sacrifice autonomy for intimacy and expand personal and relational growth, you are on path. The bottom line is cliché: you never really know someone until you live with him. Are you ready to move beyond the honeymoon stage and experience the raw reality? And remember, it is always easier to move in than to move out! Best of luck,
Arlen

Adam&Ease
By ADAM STRONG
his Valentine’s Day, you can unleash the Hopeless Romantic inside you without busting open your piggy bank. Here are five sure-fire ways to ensure a Home Run (wink-wink) this February 14. • Write a sonnet, poem, or love letter – Let out the inner Bard in you and compose something that expresses your feelings. It’s cheap, and since it comes from you, capturing a moment in time, it is one-of-akind. I realize that writing about your true feelings and emotions may not be easy, but get a look-see at the work of great poets to give you a little inspiration. (My lesbian friends have a ready-made Muse in the works of Sappho of Lesbos; guy queers can check out the lyrics of Cole Porter, or anything by Sir Elton John. Depending on your level of commitment (both to your beau or lady and to the poem), this could buy you a whole lot of goodwill to save for a future faux pas or BF (or GF) blunder. • Take a walk together – There are miles and miles of sunny places, parks, and nature trails to be found all over South Florida, with cools names like “Colee Hammock,” “Colohatchee Park,” and “Fort Lauderdale Beach.” Take a stroll, hand-in-hand, after your prepare an intimate and romantic dinner-for-two. My BF and I took a drive last month (during that fiveminute cold spell we had this winter) to Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, pulled onto an access road, and watched the airplanes land and take-off. Somebody got a mouthful of “much obliged” that night.
• Creatively use candles and flower petals – You can pick up a 100-pack of tea light candles at any department store for around five bucks. Strategically place these throughout your home, especially around the most “romantic” spots (the light of a candle reflected in and around a swimming pool is muy caliente, and not just the flame). You may not know this, but florists toss out dozens of free flower petals every day. Decorate your place with these, particularly around the dinner table, floating on the surface of a bath (see below), and le boudoir. • Romantic dinner for two – This is such a no-brainer as to almost be unnecessary to mention, but some clods need to be prodded (both ways). If you don’t have culinary skills, order take-out. If you are nimble in the kitchen, now is the time to make it happen. Maybe you both like a certain style food, or have read about something exotic like a Japanese tea ceremony you would like to recreate at home. Go bananas! (Speaking of which, Bananas Foster make for a delicious, if flammable, dessert. Keep the fire department number—and a fire extinguisher—handy, just in case the flambé goes nuclear.) • Take a bath or shower together – Do I need to remind you how hot and intimate it is to explore each other with a sponge or loofah in the privacy of your own shower or tub? Not only is it sexy, it’s also fun. This is where some of those flower (preferably red rose) petals come in handy, as they look spectacular floating on the surface, especially by the light of your tea candles (see above). Plus, you use the same amount of water to wash two people as you would for one, conserving in the process. Could you be any “greener,” honey? What matters most in each of these activities is that you take your partner’s—and your own!--tastes and likes into account, so that whatever you do will be memorable and special for both of you. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Dining By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
f we were in the Bavarian Alps and dropped into the oom-pah-pah ambience of Checkers Old München on the Boulevard, it would be nothing particularly special. Just another German Ale House with hearty food and steins of lager. But put the same place in Fort Lauderdale—or more specifically, Pompano Beach—and you’ve got an incredibly entertaining and enjoyable restaurant with its own unique twist on a night-on-the town. The place isn’t large. Some neatly arranged tables in front of a nine-seat bar backed with a kaleidoscope of beers and assorted imported German brews that are served in bottles or enormous 20-ounce glasses the size of a flower vase. It’s your first clue that everything about this restaurant, owned by Mathew Moore and his chef André, is about large portions. Or perhaps things just look large because the place is intimate and petite. In either case, the one thing that is not in doubt is the authenticity of the food. Order Kohlroulade an Tomatensosse ($15.95) and savor a taste delight straight from Munich. This wonderful cabbage roll is stuffed with a seasoned beef/rice mixture that hints of clove and is topped with a tomato sauce that makes magic by the time it reaches the back of your throat. Any German chef knows how to make a great Weinerschnitzel, but here at Checkers, it becomes something more than the typical heavy slab of pounded veal, pork or chicken. Thin as sliced turkey off of a carving station, this Weinerschnitzel ($17.95 or $15.95 depending on the meat) is tenderly dusted with an ultra-light breading that dissolves into flavor that is complemented by a homemade brown gravy with cracked pepper. Take a quick tour of Germany with the Bavarian Platter ($16.95) that combines freshly made Bratwurst (large sausages from Franconia), Knackwurst (small sausages from Holstein), Weinerschnitzel and your choice of either Sauerbraten (beef roast) or Schweinebraten (pork roast). Like all entrées at Checkers, this large dinner is accompanied by your choice of two side dishes (Spaetzel Noodles, Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, Potato Dumpling, Boiled Potato, Mashed Potatoes, Warm German Potato Salad, Steak Fries or the Vegetable of the Day). For the truly hearty eater, or those with eyes as large as your stomachs, we dare you to attempt to finish the Schweinhaxen ($19.00), a wonderfully seasoned pork shank, fully two pounds in weight, that has been boiled

and slow roasted to fall-off-the-bone tender for six hours. While the skin is crackling crisp, the meat is juicy and flavorful. This feast is served on a platter so large that just getting it to the table requires a certain amount of muscle. Consuming it requires far less effort, guaranteed. And whatever else happens during the night, do not forget to ask for at least one order of Kartoffelpuffer ($8.95), homemade fried potato pancakes that are served with applesauce and sour cream. Think hash browns, only better. And no dinner would be complete without tasting this restaurant’s legendary soup ($3.95 a cup; $4.95 a bowl) that combines German onions and apples with a butter-toasted crouton topped with cheese. The concoction is so-oo good that, in 2008, Florida’s Sun Sentinel newspaper printed the recipe with a color photo by special request and increased their circulation for the day! Once a month Checkers simplifies the entire selection process with its Beer Tasting Night. For $18.95, those that can squeeze into the place (yes, it’s that packed!) get to taste an assortment of eight German beers plus sample the buffet that includes bratwurst, sausage, sauerkraut, liverwurst, sautéed spaetzle and onions. Finish the entire tour and get your name added to the plaque above the bar. The next Beer Tasting Night is February 19th and starts at 9:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Can’t wait that long? Then reserve a table for Valentine’s Day where dinner for two is going for $65 a couple. The prix-fixe menu includes an order of potato pancakes, two servings of onion-apple soup, any two entrées from the menu, your choice of dessert (apple strudel or Black Forest cake) plus a bottle of ChocoVine dessert wine, which artfully combines chocolate and raspberry in a elixir that will celebrate any kind of romance you might have in mind for later in the evening. The music is campy, the atmosphere of weatheredwood beams and walls lined with beer ads kitschy, and servers Sonya, Saski, Marina, and Natalie attentive. Go early, stay late, and you might even learn a few words in German! And remember to tell them that MARK Magazine sent you in for good grub.

Travel By PAUL STALBAUM
’ve been a travel agent for close to forty years, having previously owned travel agencies in Philadelphia. When I moved to Florida--knowing virtually no one—I had no client base, and so I reinvented myself as an agent specializing in gay travel. Fortunately, I had a successful track record to fall back upon. One of the most interesting things I learned is that many gay travelers will only make travel arrangements that are 100% “gay.” The RSVP’s, Atlantises, and gay land-based tour operators love you for that, but I am sure you have noticed how pricey some of these trips can be compared with a similar, “non-LGBTexclusive” sailing or tour. I run many gay group cruises that will travel on a “regular” sailing, as do many other successful agents across the county. To my mind this is the best of both worlds. You travel with many other gay men—there’s strength in numbers--and at much more affordable prices. To my surprise, though, when I suggest a more moderately-priced option to a client, the response I often get is, “if it is not gay, I’m not interested.” Is this a preemptive case of intimidation or “straight panic?” My experience suggests that neither is truly justified. Some of the gay groups I have run on a sailing have been as large as 300 to 600 men. Can’t we feel at home in this environment? The straight passengers on the sailings have invariably been respectful of our gay groups. It is true that on mixed sailings you cannot nude sun bathe or get overtly sexual in public areas, but this is simply a question of boundaries and common sense: If we are respectful of the other passengers, they in turn will be respectful of us. In any case, on these cruises there are numerous private parties and functions where gay men can be a bit more “fun-loving.” This is only part of the story. I find it intriguing that many gay travelers limit themselves as to destinations because they only want to travel “the gay way,” that is, in a large group. There are so many “gay” destinations worldwide, yet many of us won’t travel with just a friend or two, or even by solo. The fact is, a gay person traveling alone can have an amazing time in the great European cities. London, Paris, Rome, Prague, Berlin, and so many others have a gay nightlife that is both abundant and welcoming. Closer to
“homo,” Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Costa Rica also fit the “fun and friendly” bill for a gay person traveling by himself or with a couple of friends. Traveling is such an enriching and memorable experience, which makes it unfortunate that there are only a handful of gay tour operators who run exotic trips to destinations like Peru, Turkey, China, or Vietnam, or who take these groups on a something unique like an African safari. For many gay travelers, these trips come with a price tag that may too high, sometimes costing $1000 or more than a similar tour offered by “mainstream” tour companies. We live in a time when now more than ever, being gay is accepted more and more worldwide. The number of European and Latin American countries that have legalized same-sex marriage, domestic partnership rights, and legalized adoption for gay couples will surprise you. In these countries, seeing a gay couple walking down the street, holding hands is a commonplace occurrence. The world is a vast and amazing place to see. If you can afford it, you are you are doing a great disservice to yourself by not seeing what is out there. There are affordable alternatives to gay-exclusive tours which enable you to visit wonderful, exotic places without the need to have a Swiss bank account. These tours, operated by companies like Trafalgar, Brendan Tours, and Globus aren’t necessarily “all gay, all day,” but they bring you to the great places of the world without breaking your budget for the rest of the year. If you haven’t traveled with “strangers” prior to this, you might feel a bit self-conscious that first day out, but I assure you, it’s mostly your own perception, as the rest of the group will embrace you as part of their own. Remember: they are on vacation, too, and most could care less about focusing on your sexuality. If the choices are to see the world and enjoy some of the most exciting experiences of your life, or limit yourself by tour operator and miss out on a more enriching life, I vote to see the world.

LGBT Guesthouses
By BOB KECSKEMETY
Our look at our most visited guest houses comes to a close this week. We hope you can enjoy as many of these great locations as you can during your visits to South Florida! Mary’s Resort 1115 Tequesta Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 954-523-3500 Located in the historic neighborhood of Sailboat Bend near downtown Fort Lauderdale, and originally built in 1928, the property consists of four cottages with a total of nine units, some designed to be combined, including deluxe hotel rooms, mini-suites , and a twobedroom suite. Each unit—except the upstairs loft—has a private entrance, with its own private outdoor seating area. The upstairs loft unit has a private sun deck. Every unit is unique. Some are equipped with full kitchens, others with small or mini-kitchenettes, others with coffee maker and microwave. Some units come with walk-in closets. All have satellite radio, in-room safes, LCD television sets, DVD players, and wireless Internet. The tropical gardens of Mary’s Resort absorb all sound from the property as well as coming from the surrounding neighborhood, which means that guests hear only the sounds of soft music and water from the fountains. This makes Mary’s very quiet in spite of its close proximity and convenience to downtown. The cottages have names like “Mango House,” the “Bamboo Loft,” and the “Mahogany Suite.” Each suite includes its own amenities and pricing. Depending on the particular cottage, time of year, and dates, prices range from $99 per night to $357 each night. There are additional savings when rooms are booked weekly.

JACKSON PADGETT & MARK NEGRETE TOGETHER, KEEPING THE “HEARTBEAT” OF THE MANORS STRONG
By BOB KECSKEMETY
n many ways, the Wilton Manors of today is not the same city it was 15 years ago, and the same can be said of some of its most iconic landmarks. In the 1990s, the Island City was a two-squaremile bedroom community, and its main drag, Wilton Drive, ran through a “downtown” that was plain and drab. When a local bar called Georgie’s Alibi opened its doors on “the Drive” in April 1997, there was little to help predict the sea-change to come. Today, the Alibi’s owners, Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete, note with amusement that the city and their landmark establishment have “come a long way.” “We try to run our businesses by always doing the right thing with the highest integrity and ethics,” said Padgett “and not stepping on other people’s toes.” Together with Negrete, his life and business partner, the pair also own Bill’s Filling Station just across the Drive. Among other things, Padgett says that he and Negrete recognize the importance of patronizing other local gay businesses. “These are local ‘mom and pop’ operations and they are selfemployed, as Mark and I are. Together we try to insure that money spent on necessity items are spent within our community.” That includes working with neighboring merchants in helping to create the highly successful “Rockin’ New Year’s Eve” which has benefited all the businesses located in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. The national spotlight first shone on Wilton Manors and its LGBT community just three years after Alibi opened its doors, when the 2000 U.S. Census data showed that between 11 and 17 percent of couples sharing homes in the Island City were “unmarried partners,” thinly-disguised official language to describe same-sex couples. When the iconic establishment opened that spring, fifteen years ago, the property it occupies was boarded-up and had no electricity to power the lights. Most of the neighborhood’s stores were empty, although some businesses lined Wilton Drive: a lock and safe shop, a nursery, a vending machine company, and a couple of offices--not exactly what you’d consider an entertainment district. The 2000 Census was a signpost that signaled the beginning of the area’s gay gentrification. Wilton Manors became the heart of South Florida’s gay community and Alibi undeniably became its heartbeat. The power couple of Padgett and Negrete, now celebrating their seventh year together, have been charged with the awesome responsibility of keeping the heart beating. Negrete, who comes from Chicago, had a background in nightclub management both in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. Padgett, originally from Charleston, South Carolina, helped build the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, and became its first director of operations.
Immersing themselves as they have in the community means recognizing the importance of working with local LGBT organizations, especially during hard economic times. Alibi and Bill’s remain major sponsors of the annual Stonewall Street Festival and Parade, as well as Wicked Weekend in October, and the spring PrideFest. In addition, they support Kids in Distress, GLAAD, the Gay American Heroes Foundation, Broward House, Care Resource, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and Tuesday’s Angels. Padgett and Negrete also credit their staff for their success and relationship with the community. “[The staff] works very hard with Mark and I, and they do a great job. Our annual Turnabout Pageants are huge successes, and the staff does everything from decorating to entertainment,” says Padgett. “They’re also what make Alibi and Bill’s so inviting, so customers keep coming back. We thank [our customers] for being part of our family and hope to have them for many years to come.” Both Alibi and Bill’s have fared better than many small businesses during the current downturn. Padgett says that there are good indications that the economy is picking up, including the opening of new food and drinking establishments on the Drive. He is philosophical about the competition. “Obviously, when any competition comes in, there is a percentage of market share that goes away, so it certainly does affect you,” notes Padgett. “But why do you think furniture stores and car dealerships are always located in clusters together? It’s because they feed off each other. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it works. In order to build your business, you need to form strategic partnerships and those partnerships may include the competing businesses. If you work well together, both businesses are enhanced.” Part of the continuing success of Bill’s and Alibi is the owners’ insistence on world-class entertainment. Famous names that have performed at their establishments include comedian Leslie Jordan and recording artist Lady Gaga. For New Year 2013, Padgett and Negrete are planning special events and guest performers at both Alibi and Bill’s. For the power couple, the future is a welcome, if still undiscovered, country. “We’re forging ahead,” says Padgett. “Everything’s going very well and we’re looking into expansion. Although it’s been a rough few years for everyone, we’ve just had to work a little harder and a little smarter. And we’ve made sure to continue to put the money back into the community where it belongs. Our patrons loyal know we’re doing the best we can to make sure the community has what it needs to flourish.” jumponmarkslist.com

Fitness ByTOM BONANTI
ou’ve been pumping away in the gym for over a month now since making those New Year’s resolutions, and you can see and feel the difference. Even that jealous co-worker has noticed your bigger arms and harder pecs and you are delighted. So why all of a sudden are you feeling a little bored and burnt out with your exercise program? This isn’t at all uncommon, no matter how determined you are or how dynamic your routine may be. It is important to understand what’s going on in your mind and with your body so that you can continue on that upward scale toward peak success. Here are my favorite tips that will help you keep that killer mindset as you hit the gym, track, or ring, etc. and continue your training with the same hungry animal intensity! First, emphasize good form in all your exercises. If you’re lifting weights make sure to maintain perfect form for each repetition of each set. Avoid swinging and throwing large amounts of weight around. Use supersets and compound sets to vary your routines and make them more effective. Try a yoga or kick-boxing class to help your flexibility and improve your cardio-vascular strength. Variety is the spice of life! Secondly, remember for the most part, quality is better than quantity… even as far as training is concerned. A half hour of intense weight lifting targeting two muscle groups is preferable to two hours of socializing and cruising with some weight training thrown in. If you’re doing cardio, try to get your heart rate into the target heart rate zone and keep it there rather than plodding through an hour on a stationary bike reading Glamour. Thirdly, skip the competition. Sure, a little eye candy can be inspiring, uplifting, to say the least. Just don’t start comparing yourself
to the 23 year old with the smoking abs or the hot daddy with the 20 inch guns. Stay focused upon yourself and your own goals. Chart your progress in a journal and keep track of your measurements. Compete only with yourself and try to become the best that you can be. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but don’t pamper yourself either. Fourthly, think about progress. Watch yourself, your form, and your muscles as they work in the mirror. Listen to inspiring music and uplifting motivational CD’s. Studies have proven that visualizing success can increase the intensity and the positive results of your workouts by as much as fifty percent. Finally, work the right muscles. If you don’t have a trainer, then keep track of which muscles you work on which days. Bigger thicker muscle groups like back and legs demand more exercise and more work than smaller muscles like biceps. Make sure to give each muscle group 48-72 hours of rest, depending upon the intensity of your workouts, before pounding them again. Overtraining can cause injury and even set you back further than not training at all. Make your training sessions an integral part of your day, week, life, etc. and learn to enjoy them. Stay pumped, healthy and fit and take advantage of this great South Florida weather. For more motivational tips contact TrainerTomB@aol.com!
