The winner of the UK series THE X-FACTOR (Season 5)--which perhaps explains her greater recognition across
the pond--ALEXANDRA BURKE released her debut single “HALLELUJAH” in 2008. The TOP-SELLING song in the UK for that year, it also holds the European record for most single sales over a 24-hour period! Her launch album, “Overcome,” debuted at number one in the UK, with four number one singles in the UK and Ireland. Get ready for round two! Alexandra gets “DOWN AND DIRTY!,” the first single from her sophomore album, “ELEPHANT.” The song features international DJ sensation ERICK MORILLO (from the 1993 hit “I LIKE TO MOVE IT”). The artist says the album title is a metaphor for relationships (as in the expression “there’s an elephant in the room”). Burke told “Digital Spy,” “Everyone has been through something in relationships; whether it be with a loved one, a partner, or family members, where something needs to be discussed.” The music video for “Elephant” is online now, and the single drops on March 11. Technology By DUNCAN ST. THIBAULT
bytes& Pieces news and entertainment P arody source The Onion has a new app—its first in mobile gaming—which updates an old classic gag product for a 21st Century user. The
Magic Answer Ball App, available for iPhone, is a jokey take on Mattel’s classic 1950s novelty toy, the Magic 8-Ball. For those too young to recall it (for reals?), the roughly grapefruit-shaped black plastic orb displayed random answers to yes or no questions. Answers included open-ended replies like “Reply hazy, try again,” and “Better not tell you now,” as well as “Without a doubt,” and “Concentrate and ask again.” The Onion‘s version is, as you might except, more edgy, even risqué. It has fun both with you and at your expense, with answers like “You are a master a finding time to do something selfish,” and “Seek help.” Like a good therapist, it doesn’t overindulge your neurotic impulses, preferring to ground you while being just the right amount patronizing: “Yes. Ok. Whatever,” and my faves, “All signs point to me not giving a sh**,” and “Calm the fu** down.” In addition to “helpful” answers and advice, the app also includes over 50 pre-programmed questions, like “Will I ever find the parking spot of my dreams?” and “Am I the father?” The Magic Answer Ball is available for $0.99 in the App Store. As the
designer says, if it isn’t 100% correct, you’re just not shaking it hard enough. Annoy-A-Teen: Revenge of the Babysitter Let’s face it: some of us are just magnets for the Frat Boy set. I’ve got nothing against the occasional “May-December” bro-mance, but “May-April” is a trip around the calendar way too far. The Annoy-A-Teen app employs sounds similar to those used by mosquito ringtones and electronic repellants, as well as dog and deer whistles. You’ve no doubt heard that teenagers can hear frequencies higher than the ones detectable by adults. Some businesses pump out sounds at this pitch from speakers in order to prevent teens from loitering out front. Annoy-ATeen lets your iPhone 3G or later speaker produce this sort of noise, making you an irritant to the young (and young of ear). Continuous, Pulsed, or Alien positions produce highfreq sounds to annoy any teenfreak, and keep the student body at bay. At 99 cents for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Androids, it’s priced for an attention-span as short as the ones it keeps at more than arm’s length.

he Florida Renaissance Festival is back for its 2012 run, as Lords and Ladies of all stripes (L, G, and especially B, T, and Q!) take to Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach for the show’s 20th anniversary year. (Saturday and Sunday, February 18-March 11 plus Monday, February 20 on Presidents’ Day.) Why should the jousters and jesters have all the fun of dressing up (or down) for a day of warhorses, queens, fools, dragons and flagons? (Come to think of it, this sounds like any given Friday night in the Gayborhood, so you’re already more than half-way there!) Since so many of the friends and people you know will probably make the trip through time at some point during the “Ren Fest’s” weekends, why not invite a Troupe of Knights and Knaves, Squires and Sorceresses to your “castle” for some pre-Faire fun before sallying forth to Ye Festival? If the idea of a get together where you get to cut loose, drink wine, ale, and mead out of Olde Fashioned flagons and goblets, eat a turkey leg right off the bone and wipe your greasy lips on your sleeve, then, Milord, you’re ready to plan your own Fabulous Fantasy Faire! Hear, Ye! Hear, Ye! Your “Renaissance Faire Party Invitation” should be produced on scroll paper, which is available at any paper supplier, and which usually has brown edges that give it a “treasure map” look. Some things to include on the Invitation (besides date, time, and location): Some creative ideas to personalize the invite (and go medieval on everyone’s butts, but in a good way) might include something to

the effect of “My Lords and Ladies (and Lords-who-areLadies): It is hereby decreed that thou art commanded by Royal Proclamation to attend Their Majesties, Queen Joe Bob and Princess Jimmy, Medieval Feast and Revel at their Castle, located at…,” etc. This is a good time to let your guests know what kind of food (or “fare”) they will be served during Ye Olde Faire. Add some fun details that remind everyone of the theme and get them into the act from the start. Remind your guests that “A tax shall be levied upon any who attend upon Their Highnesses without the proper attire.” This is, of course, your way of letting them know they need to dig out their summer diamonds (“summer diamonds, some are not”) if they are dressing as Lords or Ladies, or something “from the dregs” if they are “playing peasant.” Suggest that your guests wear costumes using different period ideas: king or queen, nobleman or noblewoman, tavern wench, gypsy, beggar, merchant, knight in shining armor, peasant, Robin Hood, virgin maiden (that should be good for many laughs), Scottish highlander (think of the sexy kilt possibilities!), court astrologer, falconer, crusader, highwayman, traveling
minstrel, and the entire gamut of characters appropriate to the setting and era. List the activities they can expect to participate in after their arrival at your castle: period crafts, games of chance and skill, exotic food preparation, etc. Go online and copy a glossary of words, phrases, and terms based on Olde English so they understand you when you greet them with, “Hail and well-met, good fellow!,” and the like. Zounds, thou art getting mighty goodly at this, my liege! Dungeons, Dragons, Characters, & Costumes D r e s s the part! There are millions of images online and in print to inspire your costume choices, and you may be surprised to find that many of the basic elements might already be in your closet (among other places). Things like tights/leggings, costume jewelry, leather belts, boots, and capes, among others, lend themselves to easy “tarting-up” to form the basis of a fun and visually-appealing costume. If you need to, visit any local costume store or arts and crafts supply shop for loads of period accessories that will give your glam to your garb. When the guests arrive, break out construction paper, colored pens and markers, glue, glitter, and other accessories and have them create their own make-believe heraldic crests and shields, then place them around the “castle” or “Inn” as was done back in the day to let other nobles and important personages know just with whom they were rubbing elbows (and sometimes chastity belts). Pimp My Castle You should decide what kind of surroundings you want to invoke in your theme. Is your home literally your castle? Are you going for a tavern or pub look? There are all sorts of ways to dress up your domicile so it reflects the flavor of the period. If you need some inspiration, throw a period movie like “Shakespeare in Love,” “Elizabeth,” or “Braveheart,” to give you some visual inspiration. If you want to keep it simple, make your common area look a pub or ale house. If you want to
go bananas, set up a tent in the backyard with picnic or banquet tables (look, mom: no tablecloths!), and wooden benches. Make some old-looking signage for different places your guests will congregate: “Ye Olde Ale House,” the “Come Hither, Harlot, Salon,” the “Knight to Remember Tavern,” “Ye Olde Starbuckes” for the coffee/espresso table, “Royal Middens,” “Water Closet,” or “Ye Chamber Pot” for restrooms, etc. Write the signs in calligraphy if you have talent, or dragoon one of your “serfs” to help. Cook! Where’s my Hasenpfeffer?! Ideally, your menu should include lots of filling foods served either on huge platters, or else on “trenchers” (from Old French tranchier: “to cut”), originally a piece of bread that was cut into a square shape and used as a plate or utensil, upon which food was placed before it was eaten. At meal’s end, the trencher could be eaten with sauce, or used to sop up the stews and porridges on the plate and gobbled up. Look, Prince Will: no dishes! Foods should include meats like beef and pork (and turkey legs!), as well as assorted fruits, vegetables, and cheeses, big loaves of bread, potatoes, and anything else that is easy to eat with one’s hands (this is the Middle Ages, after all). In addition to non-alcoholic refreshments, an assortment of wines and ales, as well as ciders and other exotic libations will complement both your guests and your theme. All of these are available at any large liquor store. Entertainment and Activities You should get some music to set the proper mood. There are literally thousands of tracks from period movies and music collections that can be loaded onto an MP3 player to provide the right ambience. If money isn’t an object, lots of local musicians and other performers are available to give your occasion a real Renaissance Faire feel. Jugglers, jesters (for instance, your most outgoing friend, who doesn’t mind going all “Wanda Sykes” on your guests, just like a court fool of olden times), minstrels, mimes, and magicians would all fit in seamlessly with the theme, as would a “real” gypsy or astrologer. Remember, Your Majesty that this is a party, and you and the members of your Royal Court are there to enjoy thyselves. God rest ye, merry gentlemen and gentlewomen, and God Save the Queen!

Dining By CLIFF DUNN
s the song lyric goes, you never lose affection for people and things that went before. And you hope that in some instances, that affection grows with time and experiences. That is what springs to mind after a recent Sunday brunch at the new Tropics on Wilton Drive, now owned and operated by Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke, the same successful entrepreneurrestaurateurs who captained the long-unparalleled Chardee’s on Wilton Drive. To observe the omnipresent Dee and Mielke in their new venture, the signature Drive bistro, Tropics, is to see two men who have been eager to drop the word “semi” from the phrase semi-retired. Individually and in-tandem, they are more akin in energy and élan to a pair of newly-minted tavernières than the successful team who helmed Wilton Manors long-reigning jewel, Chardee’s, which opened in 1990. While Dee greets guests and presses the flesh with friends new and old at the restaurant’s front tables, Mielke takes a moment to adjust his chef’s smock and explain without irony what the secret is to their success this time around. “I say this with all humility,” Mielke noted while he ascertained if my boyfriend was enjoying the red velvet cake-his second piece, “that in over 50 years of being in business, I have never worked with a team like the one we inherited. They are truly what is meant by the phrase ‘cooking with the right ingredients.’” That team was in rare form on that Sunday morning of Super Bowl. When we arrived just after 11 a.m., the dining room was already a-buzz, with guests enjoying conversation along with a generous side of coffee, mimosas, bloody Marys, and screwdrivers. The restaurant’s signature Sunday brunch ($16.95)

includes your choice of two free adult cocktails. However, we were feeling that the calories were best invested at the buffet tables, and so I nursed one vodka-OJ while he managed his caffeine intake. Both of us did avail ourselves of Sunday-Morning-Hydration, and our ever-present server, Paulo, was always ready with a refill on the H2O. After navigating our way through the breakfast lasagna and baked French toast, which both warranted multiple trips, we each returned, bounty in hand. Our plates included equal measures of spinach quiche, biscuits and gravy, Eggs Benedict, roast beef (freshly sliced from the neighboring carving station), link sausages, fruit cups, bacon strips, and omelets the size of footballs and prepared to-order (then delivered to you, on top of that). As we ate our way through a variety of great twists on old faves (French toast that comes deliciously disguised in the consistency of bread pudding!), my bf pointed out the room looked brighter and more welcoming. Dee slid in to join us, and added that the restaurant is open for business during alterations, and that his decorating crews have enhanced the room with brighter, lighter colors, and by letting in the natural lighting. In addition, they have added weekly specials to reward their existing guests and to welcome those who want to see what Tropics looks like with a little shade of Dee and Mielke magic thrown in. As regular patron John Ellis and his partner came over to say hello to Dee and us, my boyfriend mumbled something about overindulging his “inner Kristie Alley.” Meanwhile, Dee insisted I enjoy another piece of red velvet cake—and I do mean insisted. One doesn’t say no to the Dean of the Drive. We will be coming back.

Historical “Glamping”: Yosemite’s Ahwahnee Hotel hink of the Roaring Twenties, and most likely the idea of flappers, jazz music, and speakeasies come to mind. But how about Yosemite National Park? In the post World War I economic boom, the first director of the National Park Service, Stephen Mather, cleverly masterminded a novel incarnation of “luxury tourism” to garner interest and financial support for the park service. By creating the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite as the be-all-and-end-all of circa 1920s “glamping,”, he was determined to transform nature into a year-round haute amenity for the rich and famous. His plan worked. The Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed, Y-shaped lodge was constructed from 5,000 tons of granite and 30,000 feet of timber in close proximity to the park’s most majestic waterfalls, look out points and iconic domes. News of the Ahwahnee’s opening in 1927 quickly spread, and the lengthy horse and buggy pilgrimage became a rite of passage for the national elite, who thrived on the hotel’s lavish dining, Big Band entertainment, and exclusive bragging rights, admiring nature behind the expansive glass windows, dressed to the nines in period appropriate ostentation. Even Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo came to see what all the fuss was about. Soon the likes of Walt Disney, Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II followed. Flash forward eighty-five years later, and it seems that nothing and everything has changed at the Ahwahnee hotel. While today’s luxury traveler need not stroll the hallways in cloche hats or Al Capone inspired suits, the décor and interior design still reflects the original intentions of design team, Dr. Phyllis Ackerman and Dr. Arthur Pope. The duo played off a vision that combined the region’s Native American heritage with the rising Art Deco movement of the twenties, adorned with their beloved objects of affection - Persian rugs, tapestries and accessories. A post millennium restoration of the Ahwahnee underscores the hotel’s original grandeur, complete with period furnishings and ornaments, freshly nipped and tucked. Likewise, the hotel’s exterior maintains its rustic and warm façade, unobtrusively rising from the Earth and blending into its natural surroundings of the world’s tallest waterfalls and Mother Nature’s most impressive granite domes. Enjoying a quiet “If These Walls Could Talk” moment in the Great Lounge, it’s
50 | mark magazine
both inspiring and enthralling to see how the hotel has managed to keep history in style. While Ahwahnee’s panache reveals a time bygone, the hotel has completely evolved to accommodate the wants and needs of the contemporary luxury traveler. Nowadays, the hotel is connected to Yosemite Valley, an eight-mile stretch of fabulous tourist-friendly infrastructure, including restaurants and a general store. Rooms boast modern creature comforts and technologies, and a daily roster of activities allows nature enthusiasts to take full advantage of the National Park in any season. Photography classes, a variety of ranger strolls, and guided sightseeing tours are just the beginning. For more independent families and travelers, prolific hiking trails commence directly outside of the hotel, clearly mapped out on the park’s maps. Within minutes, some of nature’s most renowned sites, like North America’s highest waterfall, Yosemite Falls, sit in the palm of your hand (and in the background of your photos). Hike further, jump on the complimentary park shuttle service, or take your rental car and reach the 3000 foot granite monolith, El Capitan, or drive up to Glacier Point for a mind-blowing panorama of the iconic Half Dome, whose granite crest peaks nearly 5000 feet above the valley floor. The options are endless…. as is the sheer beauty. Come nightfall, kids love hot cocoa around the lobby fireplace, especially during “storytelling” hour. For the grownups, dinner in the candle-lit Ahwahnee Dining Room captures the living history and elegance of the Roaring Twenties. The restaurant’s formal dress code matches the stateliness of the original oversized trestles, candelabra chandeliers, fine china, and alternating columns of granite pillars and floor-to-ceiling windows. Beyond these windows, a vista of natural history, mighty and powerful, envelops the hotel, no different than it did when the hotel opened in July 1927… nor the millions of years before. www.yosemitepark.com/ahwahnee

STYLE & GROOMING by MANLEY GUYE
“You remember the delight of throwing aside the boy’s clothes, and putting on the manly toga. Expect yet more joy from putting off a childish mind, and being enrolled by philosophy as a man.” Seneca, 1st Century A.D. BUILDING BRAND “YOU” A man’s personality is formed not only by how he sees himself, but by how others see him, as well. Your looks, disposition, style, choice of clothing and accessories, temperament, and every other notable trait you bring to the table help to determine the “self ” others will perceive you to be. In short, it establishes your own personal “brand.” Once you come to understand that, in a very tangible way, you are a walking, breathing logo, you can—like the hard-nosed, demanding CEO of your own Fashionista Empire—take control of the what others will perceive when they see you, and use that to your personal and professional advantage. With this in mind, here are three techniques for reinventing “Brand [Your Name Here]”: 1. Figure Out “Who” You Are. It takes more than deciding that you are witty, charming, personable, and a bon vivant to build your personal, signature “brand.” Any branding of yourself must include elements of who you are that already exist. Being “the life of the party” is easier to do if you are by nature extroverted. Deciding that you want to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on fine wines is best achieved if you already possess some interest in the subject. Take an honest accounting of your traits and existing style. Like an actor auditioning for a part, you want to bring to the role the person who you are already, and add layers to your “performance,” until you are perfectly in character. Branding
yourself will only succeed if the concept is rooted in reality. 2. Visualize it on paper. Compile a list of adjectives and other descriptive words and phrases that reflect how you (and others!) see you. Take the words that reflect the new brand you are developing, and—like the insensitive editor of this fine weekly periodical—mercilessly cross out those attributes that do not fit your new style stamp. Be brutally honest as you add those elements that mix with your nature and personality, and subtract what doesn’t. Remember: this is not an exercise in pretending to be what you aren’t. It’s a golden opportunity for you to flex your muscles as a person of power. Powerful people reinvent themselves. 3. Wear It. Above all, the rule is to stay consistent. We are building an image that is meant to speak volumes at a glance, so picking up just any old garment you have lying around the closet is no longer an option. On the plus side, there are numerous ways for a man to dress well. Seriously, not every guy belongs in a suit. Having invested the time to write down your ideas of whom and what you want to project, you should find examples of other men who have cultivated and captured a similar look and message as the one you’re going after. Seek consistencies in style at work, when you go clubbing, or are out and about, then make these your own, putting your unique touches where they belong and incorporating the new branding ideas you have decided to incorporate. Just be certain the whole reflects the image you are ready to present.

STYLE FOR THE WORKING MAN The term “blue collar” originates in the bluecolored shirts of the Turn of the (Last) Century’s working class, which was historically defined by hourly pay and manual labor, and blue shirts which could hold a little dirt around the collar without standing out. The truth is, no matter what kind of work you do, dress is about more than just appearance. Style is about self-expression through the selection and care of clothing and accessories that reflect the tastes and self-worth of the man. Working with your hands doesn’t mean you sacrifice form for function: you can have both. Remember these three rules: 1. Clothing is Functional. Like you, your clothes should “do their job.” Boots should protect your feet and keep you steady, whether you work on oil or on ice. Your shirt should protect your arms from the elements and flying sparks, grease, or whatever. Your head-gear should protect you from the sun. You don’t have to buy the most expensive boots on the market, but your clothing should protect you from the occupational hazards of your job.
2. Buy Clothing That Fits. Simply put, clothing that fits just looks better. Properly-fitting clothes display a man’s physique. If clothes are too big, they make you look sloppy and shapeless. Functionally, clothing that fits performs better by giving you more freedom of movement. It might seem that looser clothing would give you more “maneuvering room,” but it doesn’t. Clothing that fits right stays out of the way, with the result being more—not less—range of motion. And excess fabric is more likely to get snagged on sharp edges, which can be hazardous especially if you work around moving parts. 3. Wear Clean Clothes. Your mother told you this how many times? When you get dressed first thing in the morning, the clothes you wear should be clean and presentable. Your job might make the thought of leaving work in clean clothes unrealistic, but this is no excuse to begin the day looking like yesterday’s dirty laundry. A clean presentation is about pride in you, and shows both self-awareness (which isn’t the same thing as self-absorption) and self-discipline (and you know how hot a show of discipline can be). There is an immeasurable difference between a man who gets dirty in the course of work and takes some time to adjust, versus a man who doesn’t care enough to project a clean appearance.

THE PERFECT SHAVE The correct way for a man to shave himself has become a lost art. Today’s male has no idea what he’s missing when it comes to the fine art of the traditional, wet shave that his grandfathers (not to mention Clark Gable and JFK) knew and loved. Fortunately, this signature male ritual is making a strong comeback. Prep. For the cleanest shave possible, you should prep your beard--or facial scruff-properly. Beard prep is about softening your whiskers so that shaving them is easier and with less irritation. This is why the best time to shave is right when you get out of the shower. Hot water from the shower will hydrate and soften your facial hair so it’s ready for shaving. If you haven’t showered, wet your beard with hot water. Using a hot towel is another great way to soften whiskers for the next step. Lather up. Most guys today sadly get their shaving cream from a can. Although it smells like a hospital, this chemically-laced goop actually does nothing beneficial for your face. On the other hand, traditional shave creams and soaps are chock full of natural ingredients that nourish your face while leaving you smelling deliciously manly. These high quality creams and shaving soaps cost more than the cheap-o crap-in-a-can, but just a dab creates enough lather for you to lather your face up twice. Take a small dollop— around the size of nickel--of shaving cream and 56 | mark magazine
place it in a mug. Using a shaving brush that’s been pre-soaked in water, swirl the cream around the mug until you create a nice, thick lather. Use the brush to apply the lather to your face in swirling motions. Once your face is covered, take a few strokes of the brush to smooth out the lather. Shave. There are four keys to a successful shave: 1. Use the least amount of pressure possible. 2. Angle the blade as far from your face as possible. 3. Shave with the grain. 4. Go for whisker reduction, not removal. The trickiest part is the proper angling of your razor. The best angle is probably between 30 and 45 degrees. It’s true that shaving against the grain gets you a smooth feel, but you risk hacking up your face and creating ingrown hairs. Shave with the grain of your beard. Lather up, pass the razor two or three times over your face, and you’re guaranteed a smooth finish. A little shave cream, well lathered, goes a long way. To avoid ingrown hairs and prickly, red blotches on the underside of your jaw line, lather up, cowboy, and pass the razor several times over your face. They say that every man gets the face that he deserves, and yours will thank you. After-shave. Rinse your face off with some cold water to close your pores. Treat your face to a nice aftershave. There are several to choose from, so pick the one you like best. Aftershave helps reduce any irritation that may have occurred and will leave your skin looking healthy.
GREEK STYLE: FIVE TIPS FOR THE UNDER-GRAD TO UP-GRADE No exaggeration: it’s common for college students to attend classes dressed in the same pajamas they woke up in. These same guys will also show up to presentations wearing athletic gear, and haven’t learned how to tie a big boy necktie. College is a time when young men transform into grown men. Upgrading your style will really help you feel like you’re starting a new phase of your life. Upgrade 1: Skinny and low-rise jeans are hip and trendy, but a young man should invest in style pieces that have a classic look and masculine appeal. Upgrade 2: Replace sweatshirts with sweaters. Upgrade 3: Go from T-Shirt to polo. This doesn’t have to be designer label. Just remember that, a rule, if a polo would work better than a T, roll with the polo. Wear the collar down, not popped up. Upgrade 4: Unless you plan to go running, don’t wear running shoes. Comfortable leather shoes come in all styles and prices. Flip flops should remain poolside or at the beach. Canvas sneakers are great footwear, easy to pull off (both as fashion and off your feet), and go with a lot of different pants, including jeans, khakis, and dressy shorts. White socks go to the gym. Dark socks go in your sock drawer. Upgrade 5: Every man gets the face he deserves. A man’s hair is a key element of his facial presentation, framing the top of your face and sending signals about who you are. Keep facial hair trimmed and tidy. LAST THOUGHTS Remember to keep your “look” looking natural. This is, after all, about re-branding “you,” so whatever clothing and style is most comfortable for you, be sure to wear IT and not let it wear YOU. These thoughts are to get you on the path to thinking seriously about your image and the personality you project. There’s one element that remains. Being sharp dressed is about confidence. Expressing your individuality through your personal style is fun and richly rewarding.

Fitness ByTOM BONANTI
Get Back to the Basics for Guaranteed Success! We’ve had a pretty mild winter here in South Florida. Cross your fingers! Now that spring and warmer weather are right around the corner, you’re going to have more opportunities to shed those clothes and more time to strut your body at the beach, pool or rodeo or the upcoming Pridefest. The only trouble is that all winter, spring, summer and fall, your job keeps demanding more of your time – time you’d rather spend at the gym building that body. Too bad you have to make a living! When killer long hours and horrendous deadlines keep you from hitting the gym, there are some basic and very effective exercises that you can do at the office during break time or between meetings. These must-do moves will help you to get a pump and burn a few calories until you can get to the gym. The squat is the best exercise for your lower body, especially your butt. Stand tall with your feet approximately 2 feet apart, toes pointed slightly outward. Bend your knees until your thighs are nearly parallel to the floor. Hold for four deep breaths then gradually stand back up to starting position. Repeat 5 to 10 times. Keep your back straight, hands on your hips and look straight ahead keeping your chin slightly upward. To make this exercise harder, add weight by holding a couple of large books or maybe even a coworker who needs a lift or a cheap thrill. Standing leg lifts target your hips and thighs as well as the outer thigh of the moving leg. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart. Bend both knees 2 to 3 inches. As you straighten your knees, lift your right leg up and out to the side until you feel the muscles of your right outer hip engage. Repeat 10 to 15 times on each side. Actually, you can do as many of these as you like because they are not that stressful and they will succeed in tightening and toning those legs and that butt of yours. 58 | mark magazine
Push-ups are dynamite exercises for the entire upper body, most especially your chest. For a bigger, harder chest and to offset the onslaught of man-boobs, do your push-ups daily. Bend your elbows and place your palms on the floor a bit to the side and in front of the shoulders. Straighten your arms and lift your body to balance on palms and toes. Bend your elbows to lower your body 3 to 4 inches. Press back up to start. Repeat 10 to 15 times. For variation, try different sets with your arms placed differently, close to your body, shoulder width, and wide apart. Criss-cross crunches will not only give you awesome abs, but they challenge all aspects of the core at once. Lie on a towel or a small exercise mat (you can store one under your desk) with your left knee bent towards your chest and right leg extended up off the floor. Place your hands behind your head to cradle your neck and head. Never pull on them. Curl head, neck and shoulders up off the floor. Rotate from the middle so that your right shoulder is pointing toward your left knee. Hold one breath then slowly rotate to the other side by bending the right knee and extending the left leg as the left elbow moves to the right knee. Continue alternating to complete the set. Repeat 10 to 15 times on each side. Remember, cowboy, you can build and maintain that body even when you can’t get to the gym every day. Stop making excuses. You can make your work space into a fitness center when the demands prevent you from leaving the old salt mines! For more tips on exercises you can do anywhere, contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com! Nutrition By ANDY KRESS
Supplements: Are You Getting What You Need Out of Them? Many Americans take supplements to aid in their diets—usually without the benefit of a doctor’s recommendation. Listen to the commercials and you can understand why. According to the ads, the average diet does not supply adequate nutrients. Swallow your nutrition in the form of a pill once a day, and good health will be yours. Or better still some think, take two or three or five. After all, if a little is good for you, then a lot must be better. If blood tests confirm that you are deficient in certain vitamins or minerals, consult with your physician to discuss how to correct the situation. Make the call on your own with self-diagnosis, and risk doing more harm than good. It is your liver and kidneys that must correct your mistakes filtering out all the extras the body cannot store or utilize immediately. Overwhelm these organs with excess vitamins and minerals and you can expect to become familiar with the symptoms of hypervitaminosis—a toxic condition that can lead to severe health issues. The easiest vitamins to over-consume are those that are fat soluble—Vitamins A, D, E and K. Elevated doses of vitamin A can cause liver damage, skin problems, fatigue and other harsh symptoms. Vitamin D when taken in high doses produces calcium deposits on the heart and blood vessels; it also upsets calcium metabolism leading to bone loss. Symptoms of Vitamin E overdose include nausea, abdominal pain and fatigue. Take too much Vitamin K and risk blood clots and jaundice. Compounding the problem, as the liver and kidneys work overtime to correct the situation, they mistakenly strip other vital nutrients from the body in the process. The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, the easiest way to receive your nutrients and vitamins while improving your overall health is to eat a varied diet that coincides with the food pyramid or the newer MyPlate diagram, developed by the Department of Agriculture. These charts illustrate the proper mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and protein. Notice, there is no spot here for supplements, because none should be needed. In
60 | mark magazine
a varied diet, the body receives all of its needs for vitamins and minerals through its nutrition. Any nutritionist will tell you that diet is the best source for fatty and amino acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. While many supplements provide one nutritional benefit and lack others, eating the same dietary compound from a natural food source will provide additional energy, fiber and other components for nutritional balance. Some of the most popular supplements also inhibit or delay the absorption of others nutrients due to the chemical additives and fillers used in these products. The chemicals fillers are highly foreign to the human digestive system compared to natural foods and take days--and even weeks-to process. Vitamin C supplements are the major culprit here. Supplements can also have adverse affects on medication and vice versa. Raise the red flag if you are taking oral contraceptives, blood pressure medication, laxatives, antibiotics, and some overthe-counter painkillers. Should you fall into the category of “moderate or heavy drinker,” you are the exception to the supplementation rule. Alcoholics and heavy drinkers require supplementation to overcome the deleterious effects from a poor diet and nutritional drain over a prolonged period of time. The overconsumption of alcohol affects the body’s abilities to absorb nutrients and places the liver under more stress, leading to liver disorders. As always, we leave the choice up to you. By knowing the facts about supplements, you discover that there is more of a science to proper diet than just popping a few pills in the morning. Choose correctly and it’s a win-win. Choose incorrectly and you could lose your life. Please read the labels and choose wisely.
