Chasing Dane Chase Coleman on Living In Between By Mark Gray
“Too many gay men look outside themselves for affirmation of worth,” says Jennifer Gelfer, director and executive producer of the newest gay drama series to heat up the web, In Between Men. “Gay men are not taught to love themselves. They’re often told they should be something else, namely ‘straight’. “Dane is a product of that. He is the American dream – blonde, handsome, and a doctor – but he doesn’t allow himself to realize what a catch he really is.” In Between Men follows the lives of four friends in New York City living “in between” the gay and straight worlds of New York. They are Dalton, Dane, Jacob and Ben. Through their wild adventures and – often-times – racy storylines, the show examines the relationships the guys share with one another, their colleagues, lovers, and the city of New York. Dane, played by blonde Adonis Chase Coleman, is the youngest of the group. Like many young gay guys new to the scene, he is naïve in love and his penchant for chasing bad boys gets him in trouble. Can you relate to Dane feeling like a man 18 | jumponmarkslist.com
living between two worlds? I grew up in the Deep South. New York, where I call home now, is a completely different world. I like to think I fit right in, but there is a part of me that longs to return to the pace and charm of the south. How are you and Dane alike? We both share a certain vulnerability. Also, like Dane, there are things in my past, mistakes I have made, that I regret and I’m learning from. How are you different? Dane is more susceptible to being taken advantage of. My years in New York have toughened my skin. Have you built a strong armor to protect yourself? I have a tendency to put up walls and now allow myself to get hurt. As an actor, isn’t it part of your job to strip down those walls? That’s probably why I enjoy playing Dane so much. It forces me to rip the walls down and explore my vulnerability. Is it true you were a troubled teen?
I had my fair share of being bullied and bullying others as a teen. Much of it was verbal rather than physical. I had a lot of insecurities. I still do. Insecurities and fear can manifest into bullying. It’s not the way anyone should handle things. What were you struggling with? Finding a purpose in life. I have always focused and struggled with discovering why I’m here and what it is I should do for the world. What have you discovered that you can share with fans? There is a quote that represents my philosophical view: “Cast aside all in this reality and become one within yourself.” Never let anyone or anything distract or alter you from what you want in life. Set your mind and do it. Is that what led you to New York? Yes, I came five years ago to test the waters. It was my junior year of college and I was planning on returning back to Louisiana to finish school. Things went so well with auditions, I decided to stay and finish my degree online. Dane comes to New York to pursue his medical career. What happens that makes things
go so wrong for him? Dane tends to be gullible and a bit too caring at times. His strong sense of compassion often leads to guys taking advantage of him. Like Paul… Exactly. Dane has an emptiness that he has never figured out how to fill. Paul takes advantage of Dane’s compassion and generosity and mentally abuses him. Paul’s a drug addict and Dane thinks he can save him. Yes. He wants everyone to be okay. I can relate to that. Have you had experience with drugs in the city? I have never been a fan of drugs. I don’t mind alcohol every now and then. After a long day, a drink is definitely a great way to relax and unwind. But hard drugs have never been an interest of mine. Why do you think Dane would risk his medical career for this guy? Paul represents what Dane isn’t: the crazy, loose, “in crowd” boy. The kind of popular guy that Dane wishes he could have been a part of in high school. It’s interesting what we will do for acceptance. It is one of the main challenges of twentysomethings today. Most people long for love and the acceptance of someone that they care for. The problem is that we all have completely different ideas of what love is, so we can never truly get on the same wavelength. Maybe that’s why we have such a difficulty in getting along and having peace? It sounds like you’ve given this topic a lot of thought. I’m executive producing a film that I wrote, and will direct and star in called Into the Rose Garden. It deals specifically on this issue. Have you figured out when life gets easier? I’m not sure things ever get easier. I imagine as you get older, you begin to discover more about yourself; the good and the bad. Are you in a good place today? I am happy now, but I remember many times in my past when I was quite unhappy – mostly from stupid mistakes I made. That’s ok, though. You live and learn. True. I wouldn’t trade in those days because they made me the strong, driven, determined guy I am today. If you could play any of the guys on the show besides Dane, who would you want to be? Benjamin Reed, because he’s the rebellious leader. He’s the one who seems to say “f” the rules. and looks for the fun in life. Those Marlon Brando/James Dean types appeal to me. cross-eyed By AJ Cross
She Looks Back at Me A very attractive 19-year old young man from Puerto Rico looks at me with his hazel green eyes and begins to tell me about an important woman in his life. She is a woman who is brave and bold and empowers him whenever she is around. He tells me that it is only when she is present that he feels all of his inhibitions fade away. He tells me that when he looks into the mirror “she looks back at me”. Carlos is a 19-year old transsexual with hopes of one day being able to afford the operation and hormones that will allow him to become a woman.” I wondered why a person born to be such a beautiful boy was not happy with that. In my ignorance, I thought perhaps it would be more understandable if he were esthetically unattractive and because of that he decided to put knife to skin in order to achieve a higher level of appeal. As our conversation continued, I began to realize that his interest in changing his sex had absolutely nothing to do with whether or not he was attractive – or even if he perceived himself that way. He said it best when he stated that “God made a mistake and I was supposed to be a woman”. He began to describe some of the reasons why he believed himself to be a woman trapped in a man’s body. He told me that he had dreams of giving birth and that when he would wake up a with a sense of calm and happiness came over him, and that as a child he would hold his teddy bear like a mother holding its baby and would walk it around his house in his younger sister’s baby stroller. He said that he had a total disinterest in men’s clothing and would secretly envy his mother because she would wear beautiful dresses and shoes every Sunday for church while he was forced to wear pants, a button down shirt, vest and a bow tie. He continued explaining to me that he is disgusted by his penis. Even when men have told him that he was large and it was beautiful, he would simply turn over and let the men “have their way with him”. He said that he never let a guy perform oral on him and that he would only sleep with men who treated him like he was a woman and since woman didn’t have a penis that no one should have an interest in his. I really wanted to understand all of this and, as I have encountered so many drag queens, transvestites and transsexuals in my life never having had the opportunity to explore the

topic with them, I could not lose this chance to delve into the psyche of a young man who was headed in that direction. I asked him the following questions and here were his responses: Me: Have you ever referred to your butt as a vagina during sex? Carlos: Yes! That is what it is. Me: Have you had sex with another man dressed as a woman? Carlos: No! I’m not a fake. I do not want to trick someone or shock them. I will have sex with a man as my true self soon enough. Me: As I sit here speaking to you, I find that you have a normal guys voice and you come across rather masculine. How come you do not alter your voice or the way you carry yourself to appear more feminine? Carlos: Again, I’m not trying to pretend I am a woman. I am a woman trapped in this body. My voice is my voice for now. But one day it will change. This whole thing I am going to do is about being real and showing the world who I really am, and if I start faking that now, there is no point. As the conversation continued, I asked him to show me some pictures of him as a woman and he smiled as if he was so happy I asked. He pulled out his cell phone and began to slide through photos of him in drag and I have to admit he was just as beautiful dressed as woman as he was as a boy. He began to tell me that the world is just learning to understand – or at least accept – homosexuals, and even homosexuals have not really tried to understand transvestites and transsexuals. He told me that he thinks it has always been and will always be a harder struggle for people like him, because he is in the minority of minorities. I think he is right. I think that we, as a united gay community, need to do a better job of understanding one another before we demand that heterosexuals try to understand us. I tell this story to celebrate the courage of Carlos and all of my fellow gay brothers who think they should be my sisters. If you are a boy who looks in the mirror and sees a woman looking back at you, then this story is to inspire and encourage you and give you some love. Be true to yourself and it will work out. I end this week’s columns with a quote from Carlos; “sitting down to pee is more comfortable”.

Time is of the Essence The Watch Maketh the Man
There are many theories about what certain items of clothing say about a man, but none more true than the wristwatch. Undoubtedly the male equivalent to an ‘It Bag’ for women. This is the one area of fashion that still belongs to men. You can tell someone whatever you want about your lifestyle, personal taste, income bracket and many other little hints of your social standing with just your watch. Are you flashy? Demure? Sporty? Whichever watch you invest your time and money in chose wisely. Don’t try and be someone you are not, that said the right watch can speak volumes about you even if you are just wearing boardshorts. When you say watch, brands come flying at your mind left right and centre, Rolex, Omega, Timex, Casio, Jaeger, Cartier to name just those that hit me straight up! Like so many things in life, the watch you choose should reflect you, are you a fashionista with cash in the bank? A Diamond Rolex, or a Chanel J12, maybe you have a little less cash in the bank, how about a Guess or Rado? You might be

sporty and not flashy at all, a G-shock Sports Watch, a Tag Huerer. The offering today on high quality watches is phenomenal, any design house worth their salt offers a time piece that suitable incorporates the heritage of the brand, from Oakley to Hermes. So how do you pick the right watch? Once you have picked your price point and the vein in which you want to go? Then the only way forward is to try them all. See what looks right, what skin tone you have your current lifestyle all of these will influence your watch choice. Do you want a watch for all day everyday or just an evening watch? I have chosen my top picks for watches across all income brackets, and remember a watch is a good investment, that will retain its value and capability for a long time (I am currently wearing my late Grandfathers Omega Seamaster from 1969). One word of warning; a high quality timepiece, like a good car needs maintenance and that is not cheap. However it is worth it, trust me!

Big Plans for Fort Lauderdale Beach
o Royal Palms Grand Opening
The new Royal Palms Resort celebrated its grand opening last Saturday, and what a party bash it was. Congrats to Lord Richard Gray and his staff for putting together a fabulous get-together. The property, located on Breakers Avenue, was shining with spectacular floral designs by Bobby Kyser of Pedals Panache. The showstoppers of the day were the fully nude male models that positioned themselves on floats in the two pools. At first I thought they were mannequins, but after studying them for 30 minutes saw movements and realized they were very real, live people. One of the highlights of the day was seeing and conversing with longtime friend Jay Lynch, known to most of you as columnist Mrs. Beasley. It had been several years since we had seen each other. Jay looked great and was in good spirits. Hotelier Richard Gray, who is spearheading the purchase of many beach properties, gave partygoers a tip that the beach is being developed into a quaint area that will be called North Beach Village that will be pedestrian friendly and made up of small café’s, boutique motels and hotels. The investment group that Gray is working with has already purchased a dozen properties in the area.
Short Takes
Why are employees of a restaurant on the Drive complaining about not being paid? It will be announced soon that the owner of a popular Wilton Manors establishment will be taking a BIG position with a Fortune 500 company… Is a new sports bar coming to the Drive in the Fall? Where is Joe Angelo? Why are Broward County Sheriff’s deputies hanging around Wilton Manors? Alibi has new flooring! Congrats to Java Boy owners Steve and Nicki Rose, who are proud grandparents? Congrats to Kevin Hopper, who is now publisher of a slick monthly publication in Denver called JUMP! My good friend John Manzi sent me this picture that he took at New York City’s Gay Pride. John was one of over 500,000 people who attended the historic event right after the New York State legislative body OK’d gay marriage. New York State governor Andrew Cuomo was the hero of the day for his heroic efforts in getting the legislation passed. Parade participants and thousands of spectators carried signs thanking the governor, who marched in the parade along with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Popeye, an American Bulldog, visits To The Moon owner Antonio Dumas (right) and William who, along with others, saved the animal from certain death. On a scorching afternoon, Popeye – on a leash -- was being dragged down Wilton Drive by a man on a bicycle. The dog suffered heat stroke and passed out in front of the gift/candy shop. An alert Antonio Dumas brought the dog into the store, cooled it down and called the Ft. Lauderdale Fire and Rescue, who arrived and administered first aid and rushed the dog to an animal hospital where it fully recovered. Popeye dropped by To The Moon to say THANKYOU! By the way, Antonio raised over $500 from customers to help pay medical bills. Thanks for picking us up and remember: To have a friend, you must first be a friend. Zuckerellos maintains their reputation as a consistent delight Amid the openings and closings of new restaurants in the world of food, it is sometimes way too easy to forget those restaurants which have been serving delicious food to our South Florida community for several years. Zuckerello’s is one of those places that sort of ‘flies under the radar’. Mention it to someone and they frequently will comment something like, “oh yeah, I haven’t been there in a while.” I must admit that I am guilty of the very same thing. A recent Saturday night saw my partner and I driving down Commercial Blvd. feeling hungry and ready not put off any longer ordering our main courses. for dinner. The Canine and Feline Globetrotter At some point in every jetsetter’s life comes an ephemeral yet difficult farewell to the canines and felines who love us unconditionally. Pet lovers rejoiced when upscale hotels began rolling out the red carpet for our beloved friends. The intricacies of pet-friendly travel, however, are far more complex than supervised doggie socials. Airlines have yet to match the pet-friendly paradigm, severely limiting choices for comfortable transportation. From domestic getaways to international immigration, it’s a tangled web of terms and conditions, restrictions, and hidden charges. According to Chris Nichol of www. pettravel.com, advance planning and due diligence is the key to overcoming the diverse requirements for canine and feline globetrotters.

Fine Print
Commercial Airlines – Airlines differ when it comes to rules for pet types, breed restrictions and whether pets can fly as carry-on baggage, checked baggage or cargo. Checking a pet as luggage or cargo carries risk, especially with seasonal variations, extreme temperatures, delays and airport mishaps. All pets require a certificate of good health from a veterinarian. Pocket Pets – To bring a small pet on a domestic flight as a carry-on, he or she must fit into a small IATA approved carrier with a waterproof bottom that fits under the seat in front. He or she cannot weigh more than 18 lbs and must be less than 12 inches tall. Note that most airlines will not allow more than two pets per cabin total. Size matters – A number of high-end hotels, like the RitzCarlton, the Four Seasons and the Mandarin Oriental, permit only small pets (usually under 30 lbs) and may charge a onetime cleaning fee for the duration of the stay. Pet Passport – Outside the continental U.S., each country and territory

imposes its own restrictions and immigration rules. Chris recommends that all pet owners create a Pet Passport, a collection of all identifying and required documents for entering a given country, six months in advance. This will facilitate travel and avoid unwanted quarantine.
No Strings Attached
Personal Jet or Charter – This is the superlative method for bypassing commercial restrictions on quantity, size and breeds. Pooch Palaces – Brands like Kimpton, Loews and Fairmont are committed to welcoming all pets at no extra charge. Most properties even boast in-house mascots, hamming it up in the lobby for Scooby snacks. View more travel tips: AmazingGayTravel.com

Over 40 Fitness Guide So you’re over 40? Even though some in our youth-oriented, megalomaniac society may consider you to be over the hill, there’s no need to retire to your rocking chair – not yet! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that, more and more, men are staying healthy and looking hotter and sexier way beyond 40, 50 and even 60. What are their secrets? No secrets at all, they’ve simply learned the importance of living wisely and taking care of themselves step by step, day by day. Here are some tips and preventative measures you can take right now to get your body ready for 50 more years of health and happiness. Consider your prostate. At 40, the prostate gland begins a growth spurt, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. If you’re peeing a lot at night, this may be happening to you. Don’t worry. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is rarely life-threatening. To treat this condition, see your doctor and get a prescription for alpha blockers which relax the prostate smooth muscle. In conjunction with this, a regular prostate exam is a must for all guys over 40. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, according to the American Cancer Society. Weight training is a must! Once you hit 50, you begin to lose muscle mass by as much as 15% per decade. In fact, one recent study states that at about the age of 25, guys begin to lose a half a pound of lean muscle per year! To stave off decreasing muscle mass, prevent back, hip and knee injuries, and protect against heart disease and high cholesterol, incorporate strength training into your exercise program. If you’re already lifting, keep up the good work. If you think it’s too late to start pumping iron, remember that you can still build lean muscle by lifting weights into your 80’s.

Watch your gut. As guys age, their bellies tend to expand, resulting in dangerous amounts of visceral abdominal fat that can increase the risk of colorectal cancer and heart related problems, including heart attacks and strokes. If your waist exceeds 40 inches, you are asking for trouble! To prevent this dangerous girth, stay active, use the stairs at work. Take a walk before or after supper. Try implementing a half-hour of cardio into your workout plan at least 3 times a week. Do your crunches at night while watching TV. Watch what you eat. To reduce your risk of obesity, Type II Diabetes, hypertension, cancer and heart disease, be aware of good nutritional principles. Eat more high fiber, complex, low glycemic index carbohydrates such as whole grains, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables to fuel your body. Get your protein from lean chicken and fresh cold water fish, which are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, the good fats that keep cholesterol levels in check. Deep six all processed fast foods and trans fats from your diet. Drink less. According to several studies, drinking beer and wine in moderation can deliver protection against heart attacks, strokes and hypertension. But, before you race off to Happy Hour, get the whole truth. Drinking more than one drink per day, defined as a 5 ounce glass of wine, one 12 ounce beer or 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor can increase your risk of liver disease and stroke, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fit, fabulous and over 40? Show them your stuff, you hot, smokin’ Daddy!
