In the world of dance music, there are followers, and there are leaders. There are imitators, and there are innovators. There are DJs, and there is DJ Escape. “I don’t just play records—I play with the crowd. I’m always teasing people with samples and cuts of classics, new tracks and FX,” Escape declares. “I’m all about keeping things fresh. I’m always doing mash-ups of old things and making them new, and I’m always on the lookout for the newest, hottest records. Even when I play the hits, I play them in a way I guarantee you haven’t experienced them before.” You can hear for yourself on September 17th when DJ Escape launches his new residency at Discotekka. In his fifteen years in dance music, DJ Escape has racked up more accomplishments than most spinners aspire to in a lifetime: global residencies at some of the world’s largest nightclubs, original productions for legendary superstars such as Beyoncé, Donna Summer, Kristine W and Gwen Stefani— and he’s just getting started. The down-to-earth disc jock still recalls his first exposure to clubland—a legendary night at the famed Palladium nightclub in New York City where the music of Junior Vasquez inspired Escape not just to be a part of the house music phenomenon, but to be a driving force behind it. “Up until that point, I had been a hip-hop DJ,” Escape says. “But Junior’s music just blew me away. It opened up an entirely new world to me. For the first time, I saw that music wasn’t just one element of a party—it was the party, and the people who understood that best were the gay crowds who appreciated sets filled with music you couldn’t hear anywhere else.” Escape carried that inspiration into the studio, where he created the blistering original hard house production “Wer*Ship” that had DJs from coast to coast singing his praises as an upand-coming force in the dance music movement. Suddenly the fresh-faced spinner found himself in the same spotlight as time-tested industry

veterans—and in the DJ booth at the helm of Liquid, a popular club at the time. “That gig was a dream come true,” Escape remembers. “The crowd, the venue, the sound—I was able to give the crowd exactly what they wanted each time I got in that DJ booth. I didn’t plan my sets—everything just flowed through the night, and the boys in the crowd just couldn’t get enough of it.” He was awarded his first residency at Miami’s Pump Nightclub. A year later he moved to Miami’s legendary Salvation. It wasn’t long before word of Escape’s prowess in the booth traveled beyond the savvy ears of the South Beach set and back to New York where Escape was offered an A&R job at New York’s famed Groovilicious/Strictly Rhythm record label. “My time at the label exposed me to so much music,” Escape says. “I was signing the hottest new tracks during the day and then playing them at night in the clubs.” In the past few years, however, Escape’s attention has shifted from signing new dance tracks to creating them. “I’ve really focused on the studio,” he says. “It’s like my second home now.” Teaming with soundboard dynamos Razor & Guido, Eddie Baez, Gomi, Dom Capello, Johnny Vicious & Tony Coluccio and his role model Junior Vasquez has elevated Escape’s career to the next level. “I bring what I do in the DJ booth into the studio,” Escape explains. “The same high-energy beat that you find on my dance floor is right there in my remixes and productions.” Wherever he is, if you’re on Escape’s dance floor, you’ll know it. There are dance floors, and then there is DJ Escape’s dance floor—and as anyone who’s spent a night moving to his highenergy sound can tell you, it’s not a place you’ll ever want to leave.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2011 Menswear Collection Revisits The 80’s, 90’s and Today By Eric Christian

o

The name Dolce & Gabanna is synonymous with high style and classic European flair in the fashion world. The Italian fashion house is known for its extremely fashionable and in-your-face menswear. The name is praised and applauded everywhere you go. Sure enough, for their Fall/Winter 2011 menswear runway collection, the duo did not disappoint. You can always count on Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to give you haute, sexy, masculine looks with a twist of fun and ruggedness. This year, as the models strutted down the runway, it kind of seemed as if there were looks and styles being presented from the past 20 years. There were looks for everyone in that show: The glamorous club guy in v.i.p., the biker, the street kid, the gangster and the man on Wall Street. There were wide-leg trousers, no-pleat pants and wide lapels on the jackets reminiscent of the 80’s. There were also hints of the 90’s and today with the fitted Bryan Ferry t-shirts, bleached, acid washed jeans, suspenders, cargos and heavy-soled boots. It also appeared the designers incorporated the use of many vintage and olden-days style-- one of them being braces

16 | jumponmarkslist.com

(known to many of us today as “suspenders”) and the dropped crotch pant that added swag and flair to the collection. There were also accessories that were key pieces in the collection, from black framed geek shades to the fedoras made of canvas and suede. In terms of the color palette of the designs, there were less monochromatic colors and more of grays, reds, burgundies and, of course, black. As far as texture, there was wool, especially in the coats and some pants, velvet and sequins in the suiting, and cotton in the shirts and pants. As you can see, the two designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, got our attention for the Fall/Winter 2010/2011 Menswear collection. And, they make us wait impatiently until the next season comes out to see what other surprises they have prepared for us. The collection can be found at any Dolce and Gabbana boutique nationwide, or via the web at www.dolcegabbana.com.

Hooray for Hollywood... Florida

Bordered by two of the world’s most popular GLBT cities, Hollywood, Florida is often tossed aside as a sleepy side city, far removed from the queer Miami-Fort Lauderdale limelight. However, a burgeoning arts scene, an extreme beach overhaul, downtown gentrification, and a booming restaurant scene has finally ushered in some muchdeserved TLC for this underdog city. Those tired of Miami and Fort Lauderdale’s more predictable scenes will find Hollywood a breath of fresh air – a city more about tradition, community and enrichment than cheap booze or standing and posing. Hollywood’s redux has unfolded on two main fronts – the beach and downtown. Hollywood beach continues to evolve as a more upscale destination with new construction set to unveil several trendsetting hotels in the coming years. These new hotels will delicately balance the traditional, old school throw back feel of the Broadwalk, where mom and pop ice cream shops and outdoor ethnic eateries reign supreme to commercial chains. Don’t expect Hollywood’s overly tanned old-timers to retire their 1940s clunky bicycles anytime soon. Embracing the full gamut of generations is one of Hollywood’s most charming factors. It’s the beach’s no-frills fun and frivolity that unites people of all ages, races, shapes, genders,

o

58 | jumponmarkslist.com

and sizes. So it should come as no surprise that gays here do not need to confine themselves to a separate “gay” beach; Singles, couples, and alternative families can readily enjoy the beach’s downy sands in harmony with the French Canadian tourists, sun starved vacationers, and eclectic locals. To both the north and west of Hollywood beach, Florida’s environmental heritage has been sensationally preserved within the mangroves and virgin habitats surrounding Anne Kolb Nature Center and John U. Lloyd Beach State Park. A hop, skip, and a jump from the city’s oceanfront action, old Florida awaits with endless opportunity for canoeing, kayaking, boating, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manatees while kayaking through this pristine area. And at John Lloyd State Park, there’s ample space for picnics, grilling, or just chilling along the sugarloaf sand banks. Heading west from the beach on Hollywood Boulevard, the circular Young Arts Park seques from beachfront bliss to downtown delights. With a sprawling mega playground, a state of the art amphitheatre hosting fabulous concerts, educational workshop spaces, and lots of green space for quintessential outdoor fun, this urban park has become wildly popular with families from all parts of South

Florida. The park hosts fabulous events on a regular basis – like Food Truck Monday evenings, Friday glassblowing workshops for adults and kids alike, scheduled jewelry making classes as well as a regular concert series which recently included gay favorites En Vogue and Expose in a free concert sponsored by the City of Hollywood. At the western edge of Young Arts Park, downtown Hollywood’s blossoming bar and restaurant scene commences along both Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street, leading to insider favorites like Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant, upscale modern French dining at Sage Café & Oyster Bar, sensational Merlots at Harrisons Wine Bar, and decadent desserts at Sweetz Chocolate & Treats Café. Those looking for exceptional originality should definitely begin their citywide gastronomy tour with the restaurant leading the city’s foodie revolution - Lola’s on Harrison. Lola’s menu teems with innovative mouthwatering dishes like short ribs (or Portobello mushroom steaks for vegetarians like me) smothered in homemade Coca Cola bbq sauce, topped by a tower of buttermilk onion rings alongside a helping of creamed corn, fresh ricotta gnocchi in a hearty wild

mushroom cream sauce that melts in your mouth as you eat it, and the best crab cakes you’ll have outside of Baltimore! Three separate drink menus complement the food experience- an awesome and enormous beer menu with several dozen American Hand Crafted and Imported Hand Crafted Beers; an extensive affordable wine list, and a book of artisanal cocktails full of muddled, fruity goodness! Beyond a day or evening trip to dabble in Hollywood’s beach and downtown offerings, the spectacular Hollywood Westin Diplomat is idyllic for a Hollywood vacation or staycation. With everything and anything you’d want from a grand hotel, combined with jaw-dropping views, quick beach access, plenty of swimming pools, excellent restaurants and bars (including one of my South Florida favorites – the Asian-inspired Azia), stellar service, a social vibe and a central location for enjoying Hollywood, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale-- the Hollywood Westin Diplomat is one of South Florida’s best and most affordable hotel options. fitness By Tom Bonanti

Stop Spinning Your Wheels! Maximize your workouts by avoiding bad habits Besides being fun and essential to your health, there is a science to working out. With some planning, a little skill and concentration – and some good old fashioned sweat – you can get one hell of a great workout in less than an hour. The trouble is that most guys fall into ruts by wasting time. Try leaving your cell phone and iPad in the car. Conduct business and chart your social calendar when you get back there. Stay focused on what you wish to accomplish during your workout and try to ignore other distracting stimuli. Save the gossip for the juice bar or the water cooler at work. You can cruise the parking lot, steam room and internet after you’ve performed your sets in the gym. There are also other ways to waste time in the gym. Certain commonly used exercises and techniques are ineffective and just plain unsafe. Here is my list of some time-consuming mistakes and bad habits to avoid in the gym. Let me share just a few of them and save you not only time, but also injury as well.

o

uJerking heavy weights on the leg extension machine in an attempt to blast your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thighs) is a recipe for a knee disaster. Besides straining knee ligaments, this exercise can over-develop your quads causing your hamstrings (the muscles on the backs of your thighs) to become excessively tight and inflexible. Tight hams in turn can cause low back pain and contribute to injuries. Avoid all this lower body “drama” by sticking with squats, presses, and lunges. uI’ve said this before: Any exercise where you push or pull a bar that’s positioned behind the neck can damage the rotator cuff muscles that attach your humerus (arm) to your scapula (shoulder). Once you strain or sprain these muscles, you can expect a royal pain in your neck or back. When you do wide grip lat pull downs or barbell or dumbbell shoulder presses, sit up straight, point your chest outward and pull or press the weight in front of you. uDoing cardio can be a boring waste of time, especially if you set your cardio machine too slow each and every workout. Actually varying your pace and intensity during your hour or so of cardio is a more successful fat-loss strategy. The best way to burn calories is by mixing fast and slow speeds. This is also the best way to address the body’s different energy systems and muscle groups. uSit-ups are as useless and ineffective as a 62 | jumponmarkslist.com

high school phys ed teacher. Locking your feet under a rack or bench and rolling up on your lower back as you pull for dear life on your seven cervical vertebrae will only give you a sore back. Instead, you must do crunches. Keep your feet flat on the floor or slightly elevate your legs over an exercise ball to stabilize your hips. Extend your arms and crunch your torso, bringing your elbows to your knees. You can feel the burning in your abs already! uWhen you go to the gym, your main goal is to lift weights, so for Goodness sake, use a weight that’s heavy enough so that your muscles feel worked by the end of a set of 8-12 reps. Pyramid your weights up with each set, but be careful to maintain good form with each rep. Tom Bonanti is a certified personal trainer and owner of Punp’n Inc Gym at 1271 NE 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale. Thinking about selling?

Here is what two of our clients had to say about their experience:

All realtors are not created equal! In our experience Rick is the best. I was both selling and buying so it could have been stressful, but without being aggressive with us, Rick was tenacious with everyone else to be sure we were protected at every turn and understood every step. We watched him work closely with all the different people and personalities in our families and treat each one with respect and incredible patience. His passion, energy, professionalism, and the fact that he always was a step ahead of any problem sets him apart for us from any competition. I am proud to recommend him to anyone looking to buy or sell. We are so happy and love our new house...thanks to Rick and his amazing staff!! - Bryan and James, 2011
