Hollywood DIVA—Empowering a Creative Community of Color

o

Is Nelson Melegrito a diva? Truth be told, he’s the lead diva of sorts, DIVA standing for Diverse and Inclusive Visionary Artists, “a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the creative work of multiethnic/ minority artists in the mainstream media.” When founding DIVA, Nelson was frustrated by issues facing LGBT artists of color and set out to motivate and inspire these artists in film, television, theater, music, arts and fashion by creating a safe haven for the promotion of their creativity to a larger segment of the media. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Nelson ultimately followed his dreams to Hollywood. He explained, “I have always been fascinated with Hollywood and entertainment in general since I was a child, so I proactively pursued a career in this industry when I had the opportunity.” In his day job, he is an entertainment publicity consultant—he does not get paid for his work with DIVA, where he and a dedicated group of friends volunteer. They’ve clearly been up to the challenge. “Organizing a grassroots organization with no budget and (to ultimately) be respected and acknowledged just like other big-scale LGBT organization is a major accomplishment by itself,” beamed Nelson. DIVA attracted 2,000 members in its first year and was ultimately honored with the Torie Osborn and Dick Michaels Award at the 40th LA Gay Pride by Christopher Street West for their “groundbreaking contribution to multiethnic and LGBT artists in the media.” “Among the many members, artists, personalities and supporters who have collaborated with and supported us are Margaret Cho, TR Knight, Alec Mapa, Wilson Cruz, Chad Allen, John Amaechi, Robert Gant, Peter Paige, Jai Rodriguez, Rex Lee, Michael Urie, Darryl Stephens, Charlie David, Reichen Lehmkuhl, JP Calderon, Del Shores and Jason Dottley, directors/producers Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, Allan Brocka, JD Disalvatore, Dave O’Brien and more,” according to DIVA’s Facebook page. “We were the very first organization that truly magnifies awareness of people of color artists,” Nelson explained. “Despite our smallscale structure, we were able to partner and raise funds and awareness with organizations such as GLAAD, Equality California, The Trevor Project, HRC, Upright Cabaret, OUTFEST and many others. As part of our ongoing mission to promote the multilayered creative endeavors of

14 | jumponmarkslist.com

LGBT and people of color artists, we make sure we consistently deliver our mission by partnering with other LGBT organizations and hosting special events, premieres and LGBT-focused films at various festivals.” Nelson further explained, “As a community organization, we have raised not only awareness and funds for our own group but with our friends in the community such as ACLU, APLA, ONE.org, Equality California, GLAAD, Harvey Milk High School, Join The Impact, F.A.I.R., Lifeworks Mentoring, The Trevor Project, Asian Pacific Pride Council, Human Rights Campaign, POWER UP, City of Hope Uncover The Cure, Upright Cabaret, Los Angeles Film Festival, OUTFEST, American Film Institute, Film Independent (FIND), Indian Film Festival, Visual Communications/Asian Pacific Film Festival and SAG LGBT Actors Committee.” Since 2003 when DIVA was founded, Nelson said, “I believe the acceptance by the mainstream community is gradually leaning towards our favor and this is great news. There are still challenges of course but the climate is warmer nowadays, hence we need to pursue education about our culture to the mainstream masses. We can only hope that we will not tackle this particular question in the next ten years, and instead judge someone’s creativity not because of their sexuality but how it can impact the world at large.” There’s more work to be done, according to Nelson. “I think peoples’ perceptions need to change. Again, this is where education is very vital. We also need to change leadership because, let’s face it, how can we change the general feedback if we have a flawed system and leadership to begin with? My personal hope and dream is universal acceptance—no hatred, no guilt, no conditions but pure love.” Good news! DIVA is in the process of extending our branding on a national level so we are slowly rolling out programs in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, and Dallas. Membership in DIVA is free. Just email your name and industry affiliation to QueerDIVA@ gmail.com, follow them on Twitter, or find their Facebook page by searching DIVA. Celebrity Silhouette Sets Sail Part 2: Port Highlights

Last month, I ventured to the Holy Land on the sophomore voyage of the new Celebrity Silhouette (celebritycruises.com) cruise ship. With an itinerary that includes Italy, Israel, and Greece, the ports for Celebrity’s Holy Land tour are a far cry from the cheesy same-old, same-old like Nassau and Cozumel. Two of my favorite ports are highlighted below.

o

Rome

Never one to turn down time in the Eternal City, I often opt for a few nights of pre or post-cruise fun in Rome, the common point of embarkation for European voyages on the high seas. For my Celebrity Silhouette sailing, I arrived in Rome three days early, giving me enough time to adjust for jetlag and tear up one of my favorite cities in the world! Upon arriving, I checked into my exclusive hotel, smack in the heart of the city in the shadow of the Spanish Steps – Portrait Suites Rome (lungarnocollection.com). This exclusive fourteen room micro hotel, above Rome’s famed Ferragamo store, bursts with the eclectic personality and

52 | jumponmarkslist.com

refinement of its shoe-making, show-stopping owner, Salvatore Ferragamo. These fourteen “Portrait Suites” exude understated elegance, but the best part of this hotel isn’t even the superb design-driven rooms. The view from the hotel’s rooftop lounge, exclusive to its discerning guests, is one of Rome’s most inspiring nooks. Absorbing the timeless rapture of Rome’s rooftops and the zenith of the Spanish Steps at sunrise, sunset, and every hour in between, while indulging in Portrait Suite’s fabulous full-scale rooftop honor bar, could easily go down in your personal history as your greatest moments in Rome! I did all the obligatory Rome sight seeing, including the gorgeous Trevi Fountain, camera in hand, snapping away at the hot security guards in action. I wandered for hours on what I like to call a “Piazza crawl” – losing and finding myself in and around Rome’s greatest piazzas (e.g. Navona, Venezia, and Minerva). I eventually ended up in Vatican City at St. Peter’s Basilica, splendidly quiet on a Sunday in August, giving me that much more time for sinful thoughts over the Vatican guards. Come nightfall, I was practically lip locked with

the Coliseum and loving every second of it. How? It’s called AROMA (palazzomanfredi.com) - the rooftop restaurant of the Palazzo Manfredi hotel, situated across from the Coliseum. Flush with the top arches of the historic relic, situated at just the right distance from this postcard-perfect panorama rapture, AROMA delivers a mouth watering multi-course tour de force while you gawk at the Coliseum’s authority and fantasy about its history. This intimate experience with global grandeur never grows old! What’s more? AROMA is adjacent to one of Rome’s most popular gay bars, which fills the streets on weekend and Sunday evenings.

Santorini

Unlike neighboring Mykonos, Santorini is more about immersion in the foremost examples of traditional Greek architecture and culture rather than long days on the gay beach and late night parties with European couples looking for hot threesomes. Santorini is undeniably sleepy compared to Mykonos, but it’s as impressive in person as it is in postcards. When I arrived in Santorini, I took the first tender off the ship to get a head start up to the cliff tops of Fara, the island’s capital city. I wanted to climb the massive zig-zagged staircase; but after a few dozen donkeys nearly decapitated me and I slipped on an unavoidable mound of donkey doo, I opted for the easier cable car option (an animal rights advocate, I didn’t have the heart to ride a donkey in 100 degree heat). Once on the touristy hilltop, I rented a car at Hertz for 65 euros, grabbed a map, and Santorini was my oyster. I traversed most the island in a single day, spending the majority of time in the north, at Oia, the picture-perfect town you see in every ad for Greece

tourism. Blue capped, white-washed buildings stacked along the mountainside, peering over vibrant aquamarine waters, flanked by bustling tavernas and colorful small fishing boats. This is the Greece of timeless romance and unwavering culture – somehow frozen in time despite the pressures of globalization. I gorged on my best meal of 2011 at Taverna Kristina – a small restaurant on the waterfront, serving the classics better than ever– tzaziki, grilled calamari, eggplant salad, Greek salad – the works! I asked the jolly and stocky owner if she had a website to share for this blog posting, but it was soon clear that nobody on this old school pier had probably ever used the internet! nutrition By Andy Kress

When Protein Becomes Poison “Eat or drink more protein!” This seems to be the motto of every bodybuilder and gym buff on how to get and keep big muscles. They seem to consume protein drinks like a magic elixir with untold powers of gaining and maintaining muscle mass. But does this really work? It’s certainly true that protein builds muscle. So the more protein we consume, the more muscles we can achieve in the shortest amount of time, right? Wrong, and I will tell you why. It’s easy to get too much of a good thing. Health food stores, supermarkets and gyms alike sell thousands and thousands of dollars worth of shakes, smoothies and nutrition bars loaded with protein. A protein bar alone typically contains 20 to 30 grams of the stuff. It seems like a great deal with all of that health in an easy-to-carry chew treat. Or perhaps you prefer to drink a wonderful smoothie after a hard workout. Twenty grams of protein--ice cold and blended in a cup to carry right out of the gym and into the light of day. Convenience in styrofoam. And what could be simpler than a 51gram protein shake, canned or bottled, to power a workout or chug after an exercise class. Most people tend to consume these products in about 10-15 minutes. That is a huge dose of protein entering the system that needs to be broken down before it can be utilized. So what happens to this 20-51 grams of protein when it enters your body? To be sure, some of these proteins are going to repair and grow new muscle tissues to those worked muscles. That is what proteins do, of course. They are the building blocks for our muscles. Yet, as good as they are, proteins cannot be absorbed in unlimited amounts by the body. And therein lays the problem. Whatever your system does not use is going to be ultimately wasted. According to the National Academy of Sciences, the daily requirement for an average man is only 56 grams of protein. Women need even less-- 46 grams. Wow! Not a whole lot more than a single smoothie, bar or protein shake. The body can only break down five to nine grams of that protein in an hour. This means there is a tremendous amount of extra protein that the body cannot absorb. Continually trying to eliminate the excess, the body places unnecessary stress on the kidneys, a pair of organs that tend to be less

o

58 | jumponmarkslist.com

productive with age. Constantly having to remove excess protein is extremely hard on these organs. Yet that is exactly what you’re doing when you consume shakes, bars and smoothies in short periods of time. A diet of more than 30% protein consumption is very deleterious to the body. Excess protein builds up toxic ketones within the body, which the kidneys must filter out through the urine, leaving the potential for possible dehydration. Additionally, with the elimination of protein comes loss of calcium. Losing calcium through urine could be potentially harmful for bone turnover, since the body tries to make up for the loss by stripping the bones of the very calcium they need to remain strong. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against any protein shake, bars or smoothie. But do your body a favor and pace your protein out throughout the day—not in massive doses. You will achieve the same effect without the harm or the waste of money. And your body will thank you as your muscles grow. Thinking about selling?

Here is what two of our clients had to say about their experience:

Rick listed and sold our estate home in Davie and took such good care of us we want to say thanks. It turned out the buyer of our property was terrible and did some pretty mean things, and Rick after closing, did so much that he did not even have to do to help us get the inventory back from our landscaping business and to guide us through some very stressful things. He protected us like a lion, and since we are not from the United States a lot of this is unfamiliar to us. We are very grateful and would recommend him if you need to sell, want to sell, or need someone who knows real estate and does not miss a thing. Luis and Julieta, 2011
