FETCH THE STRETCH MESH By Ian Sandburg

Addicted, the sportswear line from Barcelona, is unleashing its unique mesh wear that perfectly stretches to fit the contours of men’s curves. Made from 100% polyester, the new collection features long pants, tanks, shorts and briefs. All come in an assortment of vibrant and attractive color combinations and are available now at lajock.com. Addicted is the lower pricepoint brand to designer label ES Collection with prices ranging from $18.00 to $70.00. However, Nir Zilberman of Men’s Trends Agency maintains, “The quality is far superior to comparable brands.” The difference is in the fabric. Where ES uses the fine Italian fabrics used by Prada, Gucci and other high end designer brands, Addicted exports less expensive fabrics from Spain and Portugal. “The same team who design

for ES, design for Addicted,” explains Zilberman. “The lower price-point allows them to push boundaries even further.” In addition to the stretch mesh hugging the frontal pouch (making objects appear larger than they are), Addicted’s full rear coverage pushes the buttocks up, giving it a well-defined, muscular shape. The stretch mesh in the shirts is also form shaping. Tanks are looser around the waist (more forgiving to love handles) yet tighter around the arms and chest to give the illusion of a bigger upper build. Adds Zilberman, “Many of us cheat a bit on our diets and workouts during the holidays. Addicted’s winter collection is designed so no one will know.” Addicted’s new collection is available at www.lajock.com.

Animal Magnetism— Hollywood Stars Respond

o

“An epic tale of forbidden love in a magical place filled with adventure, wonder and great danger.” Don’t worry. I’m not about to spill the beans about your date last weekend! Rather, that’s the tag line for Water for Elephants starring Robert Pattison (Edward Cullen from the Twilight films, in case you’ve been living under a rock) and Reese Witherspoon (very legally blonde in this film). As the storyline would go, “they discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top.” If this were my movie, my big top would be played by Robert, but alas, it is a circus tent, and at the centerpiece of this love story, compassion for a special elephant. Merchandising isn’t new in the world of motion pictures, but odds are that when seeing Water for Elephants, you won’t be running off to the store in search of your own (elephant, not Robert!), the largest land mammal now living (the elephant, not Robert!)—they wouldn’t be very practical on the table or elsewhere. But when movie stars are in fact animals, it calls into question: Are the animals treated humanely and does their use in movies and on TV create problems for their non-celebrity counterparts? “A 42-year-old Asian elephant named Tai— most recently known for the role of Rosie in Fox’s Water for Elephants—was abused by its trainers in 2005, according to Animal Defenders International,” said The Hollywood Reporter. “The group has released a 2005 video showing the elephant—who also appeared in 1995’s Operation Dumbo Drop and 1996’s Larger Than Life…being beaten with hooks and electric shocked to perform headstands.” This was before the production of Water for Elephants. The Hollywood Reporter’s web site included an official response from the studio. “A central message of Water for Elephants is the condemnation of cruelty toward animals. Twentieth Century Fox feels strongly that we have taken every step to ensure that the film, while portraying the perception of animal abuse (often through digital effects), held in utmost importance the proper care and humane treatment of all animals involved in the production.” The studio went on to express its sadness at the previous mistreatment of Tai and concluded, “We are strongly opposed to violence against animals, humans or any creatures.” A related issue is that movies and celebrities create animal fads which can be identified in two categories.

14 | jumponmarkslist.com

By Nicholas Snow

“One is where people are led to believe than an animal is a wonderful pet, without being realistic,” says Yahoo Answers. “This is often caused by movies portraying animals in very idealistic ways, such as 101 Dalmatians and Lassie causing people to buy Dalmatians and Collies. These people later realize that no, these dogs are not magical animals. They do indeed need exercise and training. They do indeed eat, shed, poop and bark, and the dogs end up in a shelter.” “The other type of ‘fad animal’ is when an animal is unfortunate enough to become a fashion accessory,” continues Yahoo Answers. “Someone gets a dog because they’re small and cute and can be carried around” with “complete disregard for the fact that this animal is alive with needs. If the animal is no longer fashionable, or in some cases if it grows and isn’t as cute, the animal ends up being discarded.” Both the movies Legally Blonde and Beverly Hills Chihuahua featured the tiny breed, and most people are aware of Paris Hilton and her Tinkerbell. Last year, The Guardian newspaper in the UK reported, “From humanoid diplomacy to a canine refugee crisis, now, with news that Chihuahuas are replacing pit bulls as the breed most often left at Californian shelters. Animal welfare workers are calling it ‘the Paris Hilton syndrome’ after the celebutante whose obsessive acquisition of handbag-portable dogs has inexplicably encouraged their popularity among people who don’t actually house the mutts in chandelier-hung scale models of their Beverly Hills mansions.” To the rescue are human movie stars, with Biography.com profiling some animal activists including Alicia Silverstone (a vegetarian), Betty White (an anti-fur campaigner), Bob Barker (anti-leather), Daryl Hannah (a vegetarian), Heather Mills (anti-seal hunting), Joaquin Phoenix (a vegan), Mary Tyler Moore (a pescovegetarian, eating only fish and seafood), Pamela Anderson (vegetarian and PETA member), Tippi Hedren (caring for exotic big cats), Linda Blair (a vegan), and Sarah McLachlan (a member of the ASPCA). Let’s Do Brunch One of the most looked forward to aspects of a Sunday morning or early afternoon in Fort Lauderdale is a leisurely Sunday Brunch. It’s fun to gather a few friends to connect over mimosas, bloody Marys, champagne, great coffee, and delicious food. However, don’t plan anything too early as some of your crew may be recovering or recuperating from a long and late Saturday night. We are lucky because we live in an area where brunch al fresco is nearly always available. n option. The Fort Lauderdale area offers several options at various price points for Sunday brunch, which is a great way to get the day of rest started, no matter what your later afternoon or evening plans may be. If you desire to throw caution to the wind and go to the top—literally—for a gastronomic late morning brunch experience, then call the Pier 66 at the Hyatt Regency on 17th Street for a reservation, 954-525-6666. You will not find a more beautiful view of the beach and the entire Fort Lauderdale area. As the revolving dining room spins, you will be treated to amazing views that truly showcase why the area is known as the “Venice of America.” While enjoying the views, quaff all the Veuve Cliquot you desire or mimosas made from the same cChampagne that you can handle. The food options—and there are so many—tempt you from caviar tastesoptions, to full-fledged breakfast and lunch and an assortment of desserts options. Everything is plated with attention to detail, and the food matches the elegance of the room and the cChampagne served. Served only on Sundays from 11 until 3, this is a great choice, even at $65 per person, if you want to impress out- of- town visitors. Another classic restaurant with a great “FTL vibe,” due to its location on the Intracoastal, is the Blue Moon Fish Company (954-267-9888). This classic South Florida spot offers its brunch from 11:30 until 3:00 every Sunday. An omelette bar offers so many choices for the classic egg dish, but many diners choose the very well seasoned seafood offerings of Louisiana Seafood Gumbo, Blackened Mahi Mahi, or amazing Lump Crabcakes. A bloody Mmary, , mimosa, or cChampagne is included in the price. Watch the yachts meander by as you sit and enjoy the South Florida breeze, blue sky, and sunshine and savor some of the on best food in the Fort Lauderdale area. And all for $34.95 per person. If you love the Intracoastal as much as your beach-casual flip-flops, your dog, and your tank top, then head to Coconuts for their Sunday brunch (954-525-2421). With a great view of the water, Coconuts is a laid back and relaxing venue that serves a Sunday brunch from 10 until 1 every Sunday. It welcomes your dog, your beach attire, and your hungry palate. The staff is friendly and eager to please as you settle back to enjoy all that South Florida’s weather offers. The menu is

o

amazing, but take a personal hint and listen to your server as he or she explains that particular Sunday’s brunch features. They are creative, fun, unusual, and always delicious. Combinations that sound odd always turn out to be utterly amazing on the palate. Relax, enjoy the view, and when you are satiated, head to the beach to enjoy what makes our area the envy of so much of the rest of the country. The price point for most brunch menu items ranges between $8 and $20. If you just cannot leave the island, then wander over to Rosie’s ( 954-563-0123) for a brunch that offers tasty, creative and fun options for a “get me started” Sunday. Beginning at 10, the Sunday brunch at Rosie’s offers relaxing smooth jazz that picks up the pace as the morning morphs into afternoon. Chuckle at menu items called such bone-tickling names as “the Fat Elvis” or the “Nelly Frittata.” From healthy to purely decadent and rich, the brunch at this popular Wilton Manors’ gathering spot offers great mimosas and bloody Mmarys along with endless coffee if you need a “kick me in the pants” start to your day. The eggs bene”dicts” are enough to share, while the omelettes, can be wrapped to go for a tasty lunch the following next day if you just cannot finish them. Combine all that with Rosie’s tropical patio zen space, and you find yourself easily easing into Sunday morning. Depending on your hunger level, menu options vary from $8 to $16. Looking for a more traditional brunch on the island? Then maybe you need to venture into Tropics (954-537-6000). Long a staple on the Drive, Tropics offers a traditional Sunday Brunch from 10:30 until 2:00, featuring a buffet of favorite breakfast and lunch favorites. There’s something for everyone from omelettes to prime rib. Served in the quiet and subdued atmosphere of their dining room, the Tropics brunch is a great way to mellow out after a raucous or riotous Saturday evening. Let the world outside go by as you sit back with friends and let Tropics’ friendly and attentive wait staff attend to your whims. At $16.95 per person, it’s a great deal. Brunch is a wonderfulgreat antidote to a late night “party hearty” Saturday night or a great prelude to an afternoon at the beach or the pool. As the weather breaks and cools down, take advantage of these fine establishments and many more as you plan your relaxingyour relaxing Sunday. Unexpected Israel

More than an epicenter of historical and religious reverence, Israel (goisrael. com) is a land of amazing eats, gorgeous men, sensational beaches, superb wineries, big city sophistication, more gorgeous men, and iconoclastic multiculturalism. On my recent trip to the Holy Land, I crammed in as much as possible in three short days. Beginning in Haifa, then heading east to Tiberias, south to Jerusalem, and finishing in Tel Aviv, Israel never failed to disappoint. Its diverse and eclectic vibe was infectious and completely won me over. My 72-hour whirlwind journey started in Haifa, Israel’s third largest city, I ambled through the Baha’i Gardens and stopped for a number of Kodak moments overlooking the city on the slopes of Mount Carmel. Next on the agenda was the ancient Phoenician and Crusader seaport of Akko (akko.org.il/English/main/default.asp), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that teems with the modern sights and sounds of an Arab marketplace while standing tall as one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Israel. Towards the afternoon, I drove to the Sea of Galilee to tour some of the Christian historical and holy sites, including Capernaum, the “City of Jesus,” and the Mount of Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount. After religious overload, I spent the night in Tiberias, the capital of the Lower Galilee, at the Scots Hotel (scotshotels.co.il), and gorged on platters of divine fresh seafood with hand cut fries and onion rings at the waterfront Decks restaurant (israel-guide.com/lido-galilee/decks/ index.html). The following day, I ventured south through the West Bank to Jerusalem, beginning my day with the picture-perfect panoramic views of this ancient city from the Mount of Olives. Once inside the walls of the old city, I discovered all four quarters of Old Jerusalem, exploring every major historical and religious site like Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Judaism’s most sacred site, the Western Wall (but not before a break for Middle Eastern delights in the Arab Market.) I checked into the posh Mamilla Hotel, (mamillahotel.com) where eclectic modernist interiors prevail behind a splendid façade that

o

camouflages with the old city. The new Mammilla Hotel is the country’s most design savvy, with a few surprise elements I’ve yet to see anywhere else in the world – like the tri-partitioned colossal glass bathroom, which turns from contemporary peepshow to private sanctuary when you push a switch to release liquid crystals to frost the enveloping glass walls. Sounds almost too cool to believe? Well it is! Before leaving Jerusalem on the third day of our “Intense Israel” itinerary, I spent the morning at Yad Vashem (yadvashem.org), the National Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust – definitely heavy on the soul but beautifully and artistically presented. By mid afternoon, I had arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel’s bustling cultural center, ripe with a beachfront buzz, world famous nightlife, and its NYC–style frenetic pace. It was a Monday night, but there was no shortage of party

options (and eye candy) to keep me going until the next morning! Though the nightclub Lima Lima fell from hetero-grace in late 2010, it’s Monday night gay night is the hottest ticket in town. At 1 a.m., the club was jam packed with way-too-many hot army boys, looking to start their week off with a bang…literally! On a more serious note, throughout my visit, my tour guides always made it a point to explain Israel’s importance in world history, far more than its current role as a religious and political puppet. They introduced me to religions and peoples I

knew little about – like the Baha’i and Druze - and how these groups prosper in modern-day Israel. They also made it a point to show me the Israel we never see or hear about – Muslims, Christians, and Jews working together, eating in each other’s restaurants, and living in their own world of mutual respect. I discovered an Israel so different than I had imagined – one, which quickly instigated an insatiable desire to return and explore further. Fed Up and Burnt Out? Don’t give up yet! Presenting some surefire tips on how to light a fire under your workouts Staying fit takes more than just pumping iron and downing protein shakes. You must have patience and practice persistence and consistency. Whether you’re a bona fide pro, or just an average guy trying to get into shape, there comes a time when you feel a little frustrated, burned out and, yes, even a little bored. Just as there are a zillion ways to get fit, there are the same numbers of ways to keep up your mojo in the gym. Make working out your special “me” time. Pressures and hassles abound at work and even at home. When you’re at the gym, you are building your body first and foremost for yourself. Shut out all mental distractions. Limit conversation. If you’re working out with a partner or trainer, make sure that accomplishing your routine comes before socializing. Lock your cell phone away somewhere. Tune in to some high energy music and kick ass in the gym – your ass! Stay focused on using correct form and feeling the burn with each muscle contraction. Stay in tune with your body, how you feel, what you are thinking as your body goes through the marvelous changes that accompany working out. Everyone needs short-term and long-term goals to work toward while in the gym. Otherwise, you’re left spinning your wheels. Periodize your training by setting long-term goals for the year. Break up the year into shorter two or three month periods, each with its own goals. A short-term goal might be wiggling that hot ass of yours into a new bathing suit. There’s no better long-term goal for working out than anticipating all the new

friends you’ll make on the Atlantis Cruise you’re taking early next year. Whatever it is, give yourself something to look forward to! And hell, while you’re sculpting that gorgeous body, you may even be improving your health by lowering your blood pressure and building cardio-vascular strength! Insanity has been defined as doing the same things, the same way, all of the time--and expecting different results. The same can be said about your workouts as well. Think of ways to vary routines without losing the progress you’ve made. Check out the strides you can make with interval training or circuit training. Change from the same old machines you use at the gym to more free weights. Change the days you work out and the time of day you hit the gym. Change gyms if necessary. Just remember, change can be a very good and exciting thing. Book your workouts into your schedule. Your workouts are as essential and vital to your well being as business meetings, power lunches and conference calls. Furthermore, any boyfriend, boss or co-worker that doesn’t understand your commitment to working out needs a reality check. A fit spouse makes a better lover and happier companion. A healthy employee is less likely to have “down time” being puny and sick. Try to make each workout fun and productive. Remember to set goals and stay consistent. Fitness is a lifetime commitment. You owe it to yourself, Gorgeous! Tom Bonanti is a certified personal trainer and owner of Punp’n Inc Gym at 1271 NE 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale. For more fitness tips, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com!

Thinking about selling?

Here is what two of our clients had to say about their experience:

Rick listed and sold our estate home in Davie and took such good care of us we want to say thanks. It turned out the buyer of our property was terrible and did some pretty mean things, and Rick after closing, did so much that he did not even have to do to help us get the inventory back from our landscaping business and to guide us through some very stressful things. He protected us like a lion, and since we are not from the United States a lot of this is unfamiliar to us. We are very grateful and would recommend him if you need to sell, want to sell, or need someone who knows real estate and does not miss a thing. Luis and Julieta, 2011
