A New Fort Lauderdale Talent Photographer Michael Andrew Gives Us An Insight On His Up And Coming Career
By Nick Mangiapane
If you haven’t heard of Michael Andrew, chances are you will soon enough. He is an up and coming photographer in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Specializing in capturing the male form, his images will take your breath away. He really knows how to utilize lighting to feature each bodily detail of his models. I had a chance to catch up with Michael and he had plenty to say about what he is up to. Where are you from? I was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, but have lived in Michigan, Maine, Vermont, Alabama, California, and Northern Florida How long have you been doing photography? I’ve been shooting for about six years. I started with landscape, nature, and cityscape photography, but moved onto shooting models now going on two years. Have you gone to school for photography or did you learn it a different way?
16 | jumponmarkslist.com
I went to the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale for a year and a half to gain the main foundation of photography, but mainly I learned on my own just by going around with my camera seeing how the world looked through my lens and capturing it. Do you have any photography mentors or rolemodels that have helped mold your style? My biggest role-model is photographer Bruce Weber. The way he photographed the models, especially the male models, for Abercrombie & Fitch really captured the beauty and strength of the male body and I try to capture that in my style. A mentor I had was photographer Andy Armano. I assisted him over a summer and he taught me a lot about working with models. What are you currently doing to build up your portfolio as a photographer? I’m working with models whose looks and styles will add to my portfolio. I’m shooting more agency represented models to help build their books but also network within the agencies with Continued on pg. 18

other models. I’m marketing my work and being featured on various respectable online blogs/magazines. I’ve also connected with clothing designers, such as Bone Wear Underwear South Africa and 2(x)ist Underwear and more to come, to send samples for my models to wear in the photographs. What goes through your mind during a photo shoot? That’s a very hard question because my mind is racing a mile a minute during a shoot. Everything from the technical aspect of lighting, locations, camera settings, angles, poses, to the styling aspect of fashion, hair, make-up, and accessories. Also, I make sure the model is comfortable and knows what I need from them to get the shot that we talked about ahead of time. How do you interact with your models to get the shot you want? I talk with my models and try to describe to them the vision of what I see in my head of the shoot with them. I sometimes show them images of what kind of style I’m looking for from them. Where is your favorite location to shoot? In nature is my favorite location. From the woods to the beach, shooting in nature adds so much to a photo from softness to strength to beauty to raw. If you weren’t a photographer, what would you like to be doing? Honestly, I’d like to own my own Coffee Bar & Lounge. If you could choose any celebrity for a photo shoot, who would you choose and why? Justin Timberlake. He is really sexy and talented and would bring so much personality to a shoot and photograph. Plus, he was one of my first real crushes I had as a teenager.

the scoop Trailer Trash Weekend at Smarty Pants o By Brad ‘Scoop’ Casey
Smarty Pants annual Trailer Trash weekend party is this weekend and one can only imagine what it will be like. The annual “trash” party is one of the best neighborhood bar parties and draws large crowds. Don’t expect any social graces at this party. It begins tomorrow night (Friday) with a Trailer Park Pot Luck Buffet beginning at 5PM followed by Trailer Trash Karaoke with Don at 9PM. On Saturday, Trailer Park Breakfast at 9 AM, just before Hair of the Dog cocktails at 8. The rest of the weekend is just full of Karaoke, Bingo and drink specials. Always a fun weekend. Mark and Fritz probably will park their trailer in the parking lot!
New Abodes
The Naked Grape officially opens at their new location on Wilton Drive on Thursday, September 1. Owner Caleb Ben-Avram says the new location, just a block north of their former location, will offer expanded offerings that include Tapas plates and, of course, boutique wines and craft beers. The Naked Grape has become a favorite of wine connoisseurs for their large selection.
Was It Civil unrest? No Just the pIG Dance
The last monthly Pig Dance at the Ramrod drew such huge such crowds that lines, three deep, went down N.E. 4th Avenue, drawing the attention of Fort Lauderdale Police who sent squad cars to the bar, thinking there was civil unrest. The cops left, smiling, when they learned it was the Pig Dance.
Kessinger in Town
Alibi founder George Kessinger in town for a day not long ago. George had spent some time with his father, George Kessinger, Sr., and drove his father home after visiting his daughters in Cinncinatti and Kentucky. George flew to Kentucky from Palm Springs and the two drove back to Fort Lauderdale. George says he was not able to get out and see anyone, but will be back for an extended stay soon.
Congrats To Matty’s
Congrats to Matt Auslander and the entire crew at Matty’s on the 3rd anniversary of the club. It was a weekend of partying as hundreds and hundreds of people turned out to celebrate. Co-owner Matt Auslander tells me the bar will soon be offering drink tokens during Happy Hours, a change in original half price drinks during Happy Hours.
Learning Dallas
Hotelier Richard Gray in new abodes in Dallas and learning the layout of the progressive town. Gray has not left Fort Lauderdale totally, even after selling his spacious intracoastal waterway home. He has purchased a condo on the beach, where he will stay when in Fort Lauderdale.
Victor Zepka Blushes
The Roast for Boardwalk’s Victor Zepka was an absolute blast. The event, held at the Manor, drew large crowds and there were some hilarious jabs thrown Victor’s way. As always, Victor Zepka was a good sport and took every jab in with a belly laugh. I pity the roasters, because payback is going to be a bitch!
Celebration of Life
A Celebration of Life get together will be held today (Thursday, August 25th) for the late John ‘Mary’ Lyons at Mona’s. 61 minutes of Open Bar begins at 2PM with a delicious cookout at 4PM. Casa de Campo Oceanfront and country extravagance on the Dominican Republic’s southeast shoreline
“Casa de Campo” is a common term in Spanish, translating literally to “country house” or “cottage,” often referring to a second or third home for the Latin American bourgeoisie. However, in the Dominican Republic this term takes on a much grander meaning. Here, “Casa de Campo” is a resort, a community, a status symbol and the epitome of Caribbean luxury. Originally a golf resort and recreation zone for the executive elite during the disco decade, Casa de Campo’s 7,000 acres have steadily developed to include over 2,500 villas, homes and hotel suites, as well as a 400-berth marina to complement the award-winning Pete Dye golf courses and the evergrowing spectacle of haute dude ranch amenities. The resort grounds are so large they’re divided into different neighborhoods, and a designated golf cart is essential for traversing the property in its entirety. The resort is unique in that it coalesces elements of sophisticated, modern oceanfront living with estancia elegance and endless opportunity for the outdoor enthusiast. It’s not uncommon to split your days at Casa de Campo between horseback riding, sunbathing on the beach and sipping tropical

cocktails; or sport shooting, kayaking, playing golf on the Caribbean’s top-rated course, “Teeth of The Dog,” and then indulging in a sumptuous spa treatment. With such ample acreage, Casa de Campo has perfected the multi-faceted vacation destination in a superbly fortunate geographic point where temperatures rarely fall below 70 or rise above 82. The resort’s twenty restaurants, fifteen bars, shopping center, movie theater, equestrian center, five professional golf courses, expansive beaches, thirteen fast dry Har-Tru tennis courts, colossal marina and clay shooting center are so well dispersed that Casa de Campo feels like its very own vacation metropolis – no doubt a selfcontained world of leisure and pleasure. As the resort name implies, the “casa de campo”
experience is one of the myriad accommodation types available for guests. The “Classic Villas,” as well as several of the “Exclusive Villas,” stand as bona fide country homes, with wooden and rustic furnishings that elicit that distinctive homestyle coziness. However, it’s the seaside stunners and the new “Elite Suites” that merit the most attention. Contemporary “Oceanfront Villas” line the rocky coastline with open, airy floor plans, a heavy emphasis on neutral hues and Earth tones, drawing attention to the floor to ceiling windows that reveal the juxtaposition of blues between the contemporary infinity pool and the dazzling, aquamarine Atlantic. These villas offer pure private decadence – your own slice of the Caribbean – with the greater Casa de Campo amenities at your disposal. During last year’s refurbishment of the charming, double story clusters that comprise the hotel portion of the resort, several second floor units were converted into oversized suites, adding full modern living and dining areas to the “Elite rooms.” Beyond the more comprehensive hotel experience, these hotel suites offer close proximity to the resort’s peaceful and gregarious pool areas (a quiet one dedicated for lounging and reading, the other for a little more standing and posing, respectively), the sensational Cygalle
Healing Spa, and the bustling main lobby, with Casa’s centerpiece – Minitas Beach – just a short ride away. The perfect combination of swaying palm trees, downy sands and crystal clear waters, Minitas Beach teems with unadulterated beach bliss. Sunbathers revel in the optimal rays, drink in hand from the adjacent beach bar. Water sports enthusiasts choose from the full range of snorkeling gear, Hobie cats, kayaks and paddleboats, eager to take on the Atlantic. Spa fiends opt for the open-air massage treatments to the sounds of the crashing waves. Foodies rejoice in a barefoot lunch of fresh salads and seafood at the Beach Club by Le Cirque. For the modern family, Casa de Campo is an ideal tropical retreat that bridges the likes of the most diametrically opposed personalities, satisfying extreme cravings of pampering and/or activity, for each and every demographic. And for the more subdued luxury jetsetter, Casa de Campo offers the greatest breath of villas in the Caribbean, suiting all architectural and interior design tastes of the sophisticated vacation palate. www.casadecampo.com; 1 800 877 3643 View more travel tips: AmazingGayTravel.com

A Workout with Balls! Looking for a way to add some bounce to your routine in the gym? Try adding a Swiss Ball to turn easy exercises into more challenging maneuvers. Balancing on a ball as you crunch, press, curl, etc., helps bring more muscle groups into play and forces you to concentrate on maintaining proper form and balance. And there’s no way better to work those core muscles like the abs, obliques, and quadratus lumborum, etc. Performing resistance exercises on a ball is a more effective way to train for sports (i.e., track and field, martial arts, etc.) since in any kind of competition you are in motion and often off balance. Here’s a surefire routine that’ll put some “balls” in your workouts – Swiss Balls, that is! There’s no better way to train abs than by doing crunches on a ball. Lie on your back across the ball with legs bent, feet flat and hands behind your head. Proceed by raising head and shoulders up a few inches. Pause, squeeze your abs and return to starting position. To add resistance, clasp a dumbbell or weight plate to your chest as you crunch. Perform as many reps as it takes to get a nice burn. Try reverse crunches by laying flat on the mat with your heels on the ball then crunch as you move the ball simultaneously by bringing your knees up toward your elbows. Don’t forget your obliques – or your “side abs”. Lie on your right side over the ball, left leg over right, hands by the sides of the head, elbows

out. Proceed to bend upward as high as possible. Pause, return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Lie on your left side for another set bending up the other way. Swiss ball squats are a great and safe way to build up the butt and legs without chugging a loaded barbell across the back of your neck and shoulders. Stand with the ball between your back (actually the small of your back) and the wall. Squat slowly down until the backs of the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Make push-ups meaner and more effective by using the ball. Place your hands on top of the ball with arms bent at a 90 degree angle, legs out behind you and extending up on toes. Proceed to push up to arms’ length. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. To make dumbbell curls, shoulder and chest presses and/or front and side raises more challenging, try them seated on a ball. Of course, use lighter weights at first. Use your Swiss Ball on a mat area for added safety. Swiss Balls come in sizes small, medium and large and can be purchased at any sporting goods store. They usually come with a pump to keep them firm and bouncy! Get one and put some balls into your workouts! Tom Bonanti is a certified personal trainer and owner of Punp’n Inc Gym at 1271 NE 9th Ave, Fort Lauderdale. For more tips on how to use the Swiss ball in your workouts, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.

Thinking about selling? Here is what one of our clients had to say about their experience: “As a homeowner who does not move often, I really needed someone to help me get the best price for my property and take care of me. I knew Rick Gibson sold a lot of homes and heard so many great things about him I invited him to meet. Instead of recommending the lowest price, he asked a lot of questions and suggested a plan. He never pressured me, and since he knew what I needed he turned one offer away. When the right offer came he was firm and clear about it being very good. He was right, and after that walked me through the inspections, appraisal, and to closing. It was a great experience for me and I am happy to recommend Rick to anyone looking for help in real estate today. - Leo Martinez, 2011
