Lance Bass Talks Babies, Manny Pacquiao & More! WORDS BY JAMEER BAPTISTE PHOTO BY TED SUN

When we had the chance to ask the legendary NSYNC band member, Lance Bass, any questions we wanted, we asked them all, from how’s married life treating him to trending topics in news and everything else in between. And just like on the Meredith Show, the blond bombshell held nothing back and spilled the tea. 32

ENTERTAINMENT How’s your marriage going? We got married a little over a year ago on December 20 and of course we thought our honeymoon stage would be great. We thought that we would get to travel and enjoy the first year of marriage. But all of a sudden, we had to move to New York for one year so that kind of ruined our chances of going on vacations but it’s still been nice. We’ve been keeping warm here in NYC and working a lot. However, we are excited to get back home to Los Angles next month. Do you two live in LA and New York? We don’t have a residence in New York anymore. Our prime residence is in Los Angles. But we’ve been here since August doing a nine-month stint for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show. Last time you and Michael were here in Florida, you mentioned possibly owning a second home here. Is that still part of the plan? All my in-laws live in South Beach still so it’s something that we have always wanted. Eventually, we are going to have a second home there. We love it there, not only because our family is there, but also because I’ve spent a lot of time in Florida. I lived in Orlando for eight years and I love that it’s a melting pot, especially in South Florida. With all the different cultures coming together, acceptance comes a lot quicker and easier. Do you see any babies in the future? Yea, I think both of us are very family oriented and always had that dream of having children. And once the honeymoon phase starts going away, we are definitely going to look into having kids. For one, my husband Michael is going to be an amazing dad so I think having that experience of raising an outstanding kid is going to be a great challenge. What are signs that the honeymoon stage is dying down? Once you stop celebrating that amazing

night of your wedding and you kind of start coming down from that high, I think the next logical step to the relationship is looking at a family and being able to share the love that we have to give. What does a family with you and Michael look like? I just want to have healthy children of course, be it a son or daughter. I see us definitely having two or three kids. That’s like the perfect picture in our heads right now but that can certainly change very easily in the next couple years. We also love the idea of adopting so one day in our lives having a kid from an orphanage will be a big thing for us. What are you doing for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show? I’m part of her hot topics panel. We talk about whatever is happening in the news whether it’s pop culture or politics. It’s basically a bunch of friends sitting around the coffee table in the morning drinking coffee and dishing the sh*#t that everyone is talking about while trying to pretend you’re the experts. What’s the latest dish on the tip of everyone tongue at the moment? The it person of the hour of course is Donald Trump these days. You can’t do a show without Donald Trump coming up and of course it’s not for any positive reasons. It’s always for negative reasons. He’s the gift that just keeps on giving. Everybody loves the hot mess. How do you feel about Adidas publicly supporting the LGBT community? I think it’s great! When a corporation makes a stand like that and contractually supports and protects any LGBT person, that’s huge. Hopefully, we will see a lot of other big corporations like Nike or Reebok follow suit. We’re not going to see athletes coming out tomorrow and making this big reveal but nonetheless this is really big for future athletes. A lot of gay athletes opt out of starting their careers because of

35

ENTERTAINMENT discrimination. Teenagers out there right now that are just absolutely amazing at sports and know that this is what they want to do and just so happen to be LGBT, this will help them make the decision about their future. As far as Nike, what do you think about their decision to severe ties with Manny Pacquiao for his offensive comments made towards the LGBT community? Any kind of bigotry should not be tolerated by any corporation sponsoring a public figure. When you’re in the public eye and you’re a professional athlete or a celebrity, you’re held accountable for your actions and words. Now, you can believe whatever you want to but you can’t get upset when people don’t want to work with you because of those beliefs. I’m very proud that Nike ended their relationship with him. If you could say anything to Manny Pacquiao, what would you say? There’s nothing that I could say to him that he would listen to. People who are set in their ways are just set in their ways. Unfortunately, they just aren’t educated in certain things in their lives. And sometimes it’s not their fault; it’s just the way they’re raised. Some people are just ignorant to certain things. I feel bad for him and I’m sad that he thinks that way because it’s probably something he

learned in life. It shows the company he keeps or who the people are that raised him. The cards that he was dealt in life led him down a very ignorant path. And I hate that people have to be raised like that. Last question, what is one question that you wish us journalists would ask you that you rarely ever get asked? I love that question! My favorite question to be asked is what charities do I love working with because so many don’t get enough attention out there. One of my favorite ones is the Trevor Project. They've saved so many children's lives out there that had nobody to talk to. It’s a hotline I wish more people knew about because I think it could save more people's lives. So any chance I get, I love to give them a shout out. Mingle with Lance Bass and his former Sirius XM Dirty Pop crew before they start their new televised game shows. Cruise Planners/All Out Vacations has planned a weeklong voyage on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship complete with musical acts, special nightly parties and shore excursions, all hosted by Lance Bass and his Dirty Pop family. The cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale on April 10. Availability is limited so book today at dirtypopatsea.com.

Florida Has Balls Too! WORDS BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

44

NIGHTLIFE

NEW YORK AND ATLANTA HAVE REIGNED SUPREME FOR DECADES AS THE PREMIER GAY BALLROOM SCENE DESTINATIONS.

B

ut Florida is making a rise and Nikki Blaque from the House of Mizrahi is ready to solidify the deal with her first ever-annual Lipstick Masquerade Ball on March 12, 2016. And she is adding her own flair.

PHOTO: NIKKI BLAQUE: FACEBBOK..COM

Don’t get it wrong, her Lipstick Masquerade Ball will feature the traditional ball structure with categories, trophies and cash. Not to mention, the fun banter and unforgettable tricks and dips. There just won’t be any of the sour politics and foul play that she noticed when she first stepped onto the Florida ballroom scene in 2004. “It’s my way of building a platform for those who felt shaded,” voiced Blaque. “Houses that throw balls have been shady to other houses and I know because I’ve been shaded by judges.” Blaque’s plan is to choose her judges wisely by selecting from a pool of individuals who she has seen interact well with others in the community. Those who are passionate about building up the Florida ballroom scene and have a level of integrity when it comes to the wildly entertaining art form, which is becoming increasingly more noticeable nationally and universally – even outside of the LGBT community. “For the most part, my ball is pretty traditional,” reaffirmed Blaque. “The only difference is my passion to have all the talent come together on one accord without any hate. Bring the drama to the floor but after the battle show some love.” The theme of the ball, Lipstick Masquerade, is a play on Blaque’s alter ego as a funny diva. The grand affair will start at 11:00 pm and run until roughly 4:00 am. There will be 29 categories in total rang-

ing from the oh so popular performance (vogue) category to six-siren. Get ready for trophies, $1,500 in cash winnings and above all, bragging rights. Jersey boy Greg Lanvin from the House of Lanvin, who is legendary in the Jersey and New York ballroom scene, will be emcee extraordinaire. Entry is $30 per person. There are eight tables going for $150 each that sits ten people and come with a dinner. There will be refreshments available and top shelf liquor with a special Lipstick-themed drink. Search Nikki Blaque on Facebook to reserve your table while they last. Hollywood Jaycees Hall 2930 Hollywood Boulevard Hollywood, FL 33020

MOODY BLUES

THURSDAY 3/03 AT 8PM Hard Rock Live

With album sales of over 70 million spanning a 40-plus-years career, the Moody Blues is one of the most popular British bands of all time. Songs like “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” and “Your Wildest Dreams” have become cultural touchstones in America, utilized in films and TV shows time and again. The band’s multiple concept albums highlight their use of stereo and symphonic orchestras, something that can be heard in their 1967 album Days of Future Passed in which rock and classical music fuse in a musically innovative way. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

FRIDAY 3/04 AT 8PM Katz Theatre

Mel Brooks’ ingenious re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend lampoons the entire horror genre. Young Dr. Frankenstein attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork of bringing a corpse to life. Unfortunately, his oddly shaped helper Igor, curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and

narcissistic fiancé Elizabeth keep getting in the way. When he finally succeeds in bringing the monster to life, horrific and hilarious complications ensue. 8:00 p.m. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts. 17195 Sheridan St. Pembroke Pines. 33331.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL FRIDAY 3/04 AT 7PM BB&T Center

In some ways a glorified circus, in other ways a slickly produced artistic endeavor all its own, Cirque du Soleil has been entrancing audiences since 1980. The widely popular entertainment company didn’t receive any real widespread publicity until the mid-1990s, though, when it expanded from one to nineteen shows performing in over 271 cities. Their shows combine new age music with impressive production design, bizarre and French clown routines, and random bursts of oddball elegance (like an unfortunate housewife attempting to kiss a frog prince in La Nouba). Tonight’s production, beginning its South Florida tour, is called Toruk—The First Flight and is a visual interpretation of James Cameron’s groundbreaking film Avatar. 7:00 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave. Sunrise. 33323.

IL VOLO

SATURDAY 3/05 AT 8PM Bank United Center

These adorable Italian youngsters conquered Italy’s TV talent show Ti lascio una canzone and became popular stateside due to their gorgeous “popera” voices. Singers Piero Barone, Ignazio Baschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble have sung operatic pop music with such iconic stars as Barbara Streisand and Laura Pausini. Tonight, they will wow the crowd at the Bank United Center in support of their Grand Amore release, performing such songs as “Il Mondo” and “O Sole Mio.” 8:00 p.m. Bank United Center. 1245 Dauer Dr. Coral Gables. 33146.

SMASH MOUTH

SATURDAY 3/05 AT 8PM Casino At Dania Beach

The late 1990s brought us Smash Mouth’s radio-friendly alternative rock when the

garage band rose to prominence with ubiquitous songs like “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star”—mega-hits that not only ruled the airwaves but were also featured in films like Shrek and Rat Race. Along with their original music, Smash Mouth is also known for performing covers of popular songs like “I’m a Believer,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” Last year’s tour included an unfortunate incident in which lead singer Steve Harwell broke from his set to threaten an audience member who had thrown bread at him. Take note: it might be best to leave the pumpernickel and sourdough at home for the concert. 8:00 p.m. Casino at Dania Beach. 301 E. Dania Beach Blvd. Dania Beach. 33004.

STEVE MILLER BAND

SUNDAY 3/06 AT 7PM Hard Rock Live

American rock never sounded so good as when the Steve Miller Band owned the radio airwaves in the mid-1970s with a collection of hits that included “Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” and the psychedelic “Fly Like an Eagle.” Drawing from classic rock standards from the wildly successful album Greatest Hits to R&B flavored tracks from their two recent hit CDs (Let Your Hair Down and Bingo), Miller’s trademark blues-rock sound stands among the best American music ever created. 7:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

15 Times Gay People Won An Oscar™ BY ALAXANDER KACALA

70

GAYDAR

Sam Smith may need a history lesson. On Sunday night at the Oscars™, while accepting his award for Best Original Song for “Writing’s on the Wall,” Smith said that “I read an article a few months ago, by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar™, and if this is the case — and even if it isn’t the case — I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.” So here is one for the books. From Elton John to Melissa Etheridge, we list thirteen times gay people won an Oscar™ prior to the confused Smith. Sir John Gielgud, an openly gay actor, won Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1981 for his performance in Arthur. The veteran actor Joel Grey, who came out last year, won the award for Best Supporting Actor for Cabaret in 1973. Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar won for writing Talk to Her in 2002. In 1990, Stephen Sondheim took home an Oscar™ for Best Original Song, “Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man),” from Dick Tracy. “True Blood” creator Alan Ball, who has said he came out as gay to his mother when he was 33, won an Oscar™ in 2000 for writing American Beauty.

Elton John won an Oscar™ for 1994’s Best Original Song, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” from The Lion King. Howard Ashman, a gay lyricist who died from AIDS complications in 1991, first won Best Original Song “Under the Sea” from 1989’s The Little Mermaid. Then, he was posthumously honored in the same category in 1991 for the song “Beauty and the Beast” from the film of the same name. After writing “I Need to Wake Up” for the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth, Melissa Etheridge won Best Original Song in 2007. Bill Condon, an openly gay filmmaker, won an Oscar™ in 1999 for writing the screenplay to Gods and Monsters, which he also directed. John Schlesinger won an Oscar™ in 1970 for directing Midnight Cowboy. Before coming out, Jodie Foster won two Academy Awards for her work in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs. Scott Rudin won for producing No Country for Old Men in 2007. And last but not least Dustin Lance Black received the Academy Award in 2009 for Best Original Screenplay for Milk.

MAXIMIZE YOUR CARDIO! BY TOM BONANTI

Implementing a fitness lifestyle for improved health and appearance requires a 3- fold approach: weight training, good nutrition, and yes, doing your cardio on a regular basis! Before the eye rolls, let me point out that cardio-vascular training will help you live longer because it’s the best way to keep a healthy heart. But did you realize that doing cardio can also help you lose weight and achieve your strength and bodybuilding objectives? Here’s an approach to cardio-vascular training that is sure to give results on all levels. It’s called interval training. Interval training is an exercise session in which the intensity and duration of exercise are consciously alternated between harder and easier work. For example, you might do wind sprints for15 seconds, then slow down to a power walk for 30 seconds – that’s one interval. By varying the duration of either your sprint or your walking, you can change the way the interval affects your body. In other words, some types of intervals are better for fat loss, while others are better for building endurance or preserving lean muscle.

FITNESS

There are a couple key things to keep in mind. Firstly, interval training requires a little more planning than just climbing on to a treadmill. Secondly, to do interval training, you’ll have to estimate what percentage of your all-out effort you are working at. Basically, the speed you’d run or cycle at to save your life equals 100%, from there, adjust how fast and hard you have to work so your output reflects the recommended percentage.

INTERVALS FOR BODY BUILDING Weight training builds muscle, but it doesn’t really burn fat. Try this interval training routine twice a week, preferably on nonweight training days and you’ll melt fat. Warm up: Five minutes of jogging or cycling at 30% of your all-out effort. Run or cycle for 15 seconds at 100% of your all-out effort. Power walk for one minute. Repeat steps 2 and 3 up to seven more times. Chill with five minutes of stretching.

Run or cycle for 30 seconds at about 90% of your all-out effort. Slow down to 30% of your all-out effort for 60 seconds. Repeat steps 2 and 3 up to seven more times. Finish with five minutes of walking and light stretching at 30% of your all-out effort.

INTERVALS FOR ENDURANCE Interval training is great for building endurance. Perform this two times a week in addition to your regular “cardio” of choice. Warm up for 5-10 minutes by jogging or cycling at 30% of your all-out effort. Run or cycle for 2-3 minutes at the fastest pace you can maintain for 8-10 minutes. Slow down and walk around as you lightly stretch for 8-10 minutes. Repeat steps 2 and 3. If you are a beginner, do 3-6 intervals. If you’re more advanced do 10 intervals. Finish with stretching for several minutes.

INTERVALS FOR FAT LOSS Interval training is superior to aerobic exercise for fat loss. That doesn’t mean it burns more calories; it makes your body work harder to burn more fat and protects your body from burning up hard earned lean muscle. Do this routine 3-5 times per week. Warm up for 5-10 minutes by running or cycling at 30% of your all-out effort.

REEL REVELATIONS RACE. Early winter 2016 has brought movie lovers not one but two Olympics-themed movies based on real people. Where the intentionally campy Eddie The Eagle is a somewhat wacky affair with a heart of gold (medal), the equally uplifting Race (Focus) takes a more serious approach to its storytelling. It also has the bonus of being a biopic full of hot, sweaty and muscular bodies. Beginning in the fall of 1933 when Ohio State University college student Jesse Owens (Stephan James) caught the attention of track and field coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), it follows the pair on their journey from Columbus, Ohio to Berlin, Germany for the 1936 Olympics, at which Owens won a groundbreaking four gold medals. Race keeps a lot of balls in the air over the course of two hours. In addition to relating Owens’ inspirational story (including his parents as well as Ruth, the mother of his

88

daughter and his future wife, played by Shanice Banton), and Snyder’s return to form, Race deals with the role of the Nazis at the Olympics. Famous names such as high ranking Nazi official Joseph Goebbels (Barnaby Metschurat) and filmmaking propagandist Leni Riefenstahl (Carice van Houten), in addition to German athlete Luz Long (David Kross), and American architect and Olympic committee member Avery Brundage (Jeremy Irons), are also essential components of the story. The kind of inspirational movie that causes audiences to cheer and applaud throughout, the timing of the release of Race is significant for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the 80th anniversary of the 1936 Olympics is approaching and it’s a golden opportunity to celebrate Owens’ legacy. Given the current political climate, and the ongoing racial tensions, Race functions as a message movie and offers a lesson about overcoming prejudice and destructive political adversaries.

ENTERTAINMENT

NINA FOREVER. British horror flick Nina Forever (Epic) puts a new spin on the ghost and zombie story genre. Robert (Cian Barry) hasn’t been the same since the death of his girlfriend Nina (Fiona O'Shaughnessy) in a car accident. He’s given up a promising career to stock the shelves at a supermarket. He’s even gone down a suicidal path, crashing his motorbike.

YOU'RE KILLING ME. Silly gay slasher flick You’re Killing Me (Wolfe) is similar to Nina Forever in that it’s neither scary nor funny enough to satisfy all viewers, including this one. Drop-dead gorgeous Joe (Matthew McKelligon) newly released from a psychiatric hospital by Dr. Strauss (Sam Pancake) may have gotten out too soon for his own good and the good of others around him.

At the supermarket job, Robert meets weird cashier Holly (Abigail Hardingham). Holly, who is in school to become a paramedic, tends to Robert’s wounds. Soon, the pair is dating, which leads to them having sex. In the midst of their passionate lovemaking, a bloody and battered Nina emerges from the mattress to interrupt the act.

It doesn’t take Joe long to go from killing small animals to taking human lives, beginning with hot new boyfriend Andy (Matthew Wilkas). As he begins to expand his social circle and make friends, he starts killing them, too. After meeting and falling for self-absorbed web-series star George (Jeffery Self of Jeffery and Cole Casserole fame) he finds purpose in his murder spree by offing the people who offend or do George wrong in some way.

It turns out that even though Nina is deceased, she doesn’t consider herself Robert’s ex as they never broke up before she died. Talk about putting a strain on a new relationship. In addition to adding a queer element to the story (bisexual necrophilia anyone?), Nina’s presence also serves as a metaphor for loss, grief, letting go and moving on. Not quite frightening enough to scare viewers silly and not quite hip enough to be in the same league as It Follows, The Babadook or The Witch, Nina Forever goes on a little too long, although not forever, thankfully. [In theaters and on iTunes/VOD.]

McKelligon is so hot that it’s easy to forgive some of the completely implausible aspects of the movie. However, the kooky semi-improvised interaction between the characters loses its charm so fast you might atually want to kill someone yourself. DVD bonus features include improv with cast members Drew Droege and Edi Patterson, bloopers and more.
