COMMENT OF THE WEEK:

My only mistake was insinuating that Sarah Palin might have sex with someone other than one of her cousins. #trailer - Azealia Banks on Twitter

How did Trump-esque Ricky Martin start dating Nyle DiMarco after a bizarre fight at the Pines Party?

‘GRACE AND FRANKIE’ ARE BACK With Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda in the leads, we were probably always going to love Grace and Frankie. Season two is back on Netflix May 8 and looks to offer new love interests for its leading ladies, with Sam Elliot turning up to woo Grace from the looks of things. Here’s hoping they can also lure Dolly Parton in for the 9 to 5 reunion that she hinted she’d be up for. TRUMP-ESQUE? When asked by Frontiers magazine about her latest leading lady’s resemblance to Donald Trump, Melissa McCarthy responded, “She does make people money. And she’s made herself money. And she runs successful companies. So to me, it’s not Trump-esque at all, because it’s not … she’s actually doing something. [Laughs] I’ll regret that.” Her newest project, The Boss, opened in theaters April 8. HE BANGS Latin Daddy Ricky Martin has

been seen out and about the world traveling with 31-year-old London-based Swedish artist Jwan Yosef. The extremely private singer and father of two hasn’t confirmed the rumors, but we are totally into this couple and wouldn’t mind a front row seat to watch them bang it out.

is dominating the competition in this season of Dancing with the Stars. Last week, he and his partner received the highest scores of the night and a standing ovation from the audience. If he keeps dancing through the competition like this, he may just claim his second reality win in a row.

BIZARRO Sarah Palin and Azaelia Banks got into a strange fight over social media that has now resulted in Palin wanting to sue the rapper. Banks sort of apologized for a few remarks but Palin says that’s not enough. “If a white girl were to say what this black girl is saying, the screams for the entire white population’s head would be louder than the nonsensical rap that Azealia spews all the way to the bank. The white girl would probably be locked up,” Palin posted.

MURDER IN MIAMI Miami Beach police have arrested a man for his suspected connection to the murder of Louis Piper, a financial executive who was found dead in his condo last week. 30-year-old Jonathan Alonso was charged and arrested Friday for the murder of his partner, 61-year-old Piper. The two lived together in the condo where Piper's body was discovered last Wednesday. Alonso is charged with one count of murder in the first degree and with one count of felony criminal mischief for destroying police property while in custody. If convicted, Alonso faces the death penalty or life without parole.

YOU’RE THE TOP Sexually fluid Nyle DiMarco is on top yet again. The recent America’s Next Top Model winner

WHAT’S

W

hen you see a muscular bear standing at six feet and 240lbs staring you down, your first thought probably isn’t to laugh. Yet when that same bear is Peter Bisuito, you are guaranteed to have a chuckle. Or better yet, an all out giggle fest. Making people laugh comes naturally to Bisuito. He’s been doing it his whole life to gain acceptance. It’s been his safety tool from having to live a closeted life in the 70s and 80s while growing up in Rochester, New York with the constant fear of rejection for being gay. “I subconsciously tried to gain people's acceptance by making them laugh,” Bisuito expressed with no hesitation. “When somebody laughs at my jokes, it's the biggest form of acceptance to me.” At 12 years old, the giggling fur ball knew he had a knack for laughter when he hit a classmate with a one, two chuckle after responding back to his insult with a sarcastic yet funny reply that brought the crowd to crouch-holding-theirstomachs-with-uncontainable laughter. “This guy in my class named John yelled in front of the entire class, ‘Hey Peter, what does it feel like to be named after a penis’,” Bisuito recalled. “I replied, ‘I don't know, what does it feel like to be named after a toilet?'” The funny bones was in Bisuito and he did part-time comedy here and there, but it wasn’t until four years ago that he decided to quit his day job and pursue his comedy full-time. It wasn’t a giant leap of faith because the storyteller jokester hit a home-run with a standing ovation at his first self-promoted and planned show. Not only did he sell-out an entire 350-

seat theater, but the owner had to turn patrons away because of capacity limitations. He claims to have never been booed or heckled. Not once. However, he does have to win over skeptics that just can’t believe a muscle bear can be anything more than a bouncer. But he never seems to fail because his humor, which he describes as a mash up of Kathy Griffin meets Ellen DeGeneres meets George Carlin, always tickles the funny bone. Bisuito has received so much praise that he has reached the stage of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to give us Fort Lauderdale residents a heaping gulp of his laughing gas. It’s going to be a stage presence that the former theater boy is fond of and ready to return to. The comedian will perform a no-holdsbarred show with an adult advisory sticker attached. “I absolutely love to poke fun at political incorrectness,” warned Bisuito “But I like to keep things funny yet respectful unless I'm talking about cats. Cats can suck it!” He’s only at the Broward Center for one night before he's off on his European tour, so get your kicks with Bisuito on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 pm. Tickets available at ticketmaster. com, Peter Bisuito in My Big Funny Peter. --Jameer Baptiste

NIGHTLIFE

Calling All Impersonators A New Competition Comes To le Boy.

16

WHAT’S

G

et ready to pullout your best celebrity lookalike impersonation because Nikki Adams and Frankie Blue have created an illusionist competition meant to capture one of the true founding arts of drag. The name of the game is Old Skool and the purpose of the competition is to scout for incredible impersonating talents that can truly embody the look and mannerisms of any wellknown celebrity whether alive and well or a cherished gem from years' past. "Old Skool has nothing to do with age,” suggests Blue with a sense of yearning in his voice. “It's about an art form that we would hate to lose." No age, sex or personality is off limits ,whether it be the character you are portraying or who you are yourself. Both men and women are welcome to compete and both are more than welcome to portray a celebrity of any gender. “I’ve worked in the business for 39 years all over the country," a forthcoming Adams told us. “I like seeing new blood in the arena." If you’re a girl with a spot-on Michael Jackson routine, than try your luck. If you’re a guy who can transform into the legendary Diana Ross, than come on out. Regardless who you decide to be, just make sure your impersonation leaves the audience flabbergasted and bewildered as if the celebrity themselves had appeared right before their very eyes. Convincing the crowd is key in the competition since they have the final say on whether you win and move on to the finale that will take place on May 29, the Sunday right before Memorial Day. There are a total of four preliminary contests with one already snatched up by local diva Deja Devonier in her rendition of the iconic Tina Turner on April 3. Each preliminary winner walks away with $150 in cash, a $50 bar tab and one guaranteed future paid booking with Blues Events, which secures permanent casinos, theaters and private venues. And of course a competing spot in the finale. Adams and Blue’s whole reason behind pro-

ducing the competition is to build an illusionist cast that could be showcased to the world. The finale winner receives $500 in cash, a $500 bar tab and two additional guaranteed future paid bookings on top of their previous guaranteed booking with Blues Events. The preliminary rounds are every other Sunday leading up to the finale at 7:00 pm sharp. The next competition, always held at le Boy, will be on April 17. Dancers don’t go on until after the show. Enjoy a BBQ item with the purchase of an adult drink from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. And happy hour prices until 8:00 pm. There is also a drinking game held every 15 minutes in which the first lucky patron to guess Adams' number from 1 to 30 gets a complimentary drink. The whole event is all in good fun with the hope to continue a cherished form of drag that has been popular since the 60s. To enter call Blue at 561-302-2195. FINERY Mao Joa

Facebook: Maowtf BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

DO YOU ALWAYS ROCK A FULL BEARD? I can't remember the last time I saw my face without my beard. To be honest I forgot how my face looks without it. TELLS US ABOUT YOUR NAME, MAO JOA? I'm half Chinese and our roots date back to before chairman Mao obtained power. Due to opposition most of my family fled China. My father and grandfather; however, decided that the first grandchild would be named after a communist leader. So here I am. YOUR LOOK IS SIMPLE YET EYE CATCHING. IS THAT YOUR NORMAL STYLE? My sense of style is pretty simple. And I rarely ever wear clothing that has detailing or writing. I like to say all I wear is pretty much monochromatic. ARE YOU SUPER CAUTIOUS WHEN YOU WEAR WHITE? I'm super cautious at all times. I own so many all white outfits that being super cautious is just normal behavior for me. ARE YOU DONE WITH GETTING TATTOOS OR DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR MORE? I’m nowhere near done. I have about 16 now and my plans are to cover everything neck down with a meaning to it.

Gay Millennials Fill A Necessary Void In Miami BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

W

hen a colleague told Jaime Bayo that roughly 95 percent of the gay community wasn’t engaged in any sort of volunteering, he paused with concern and pondered why. Bayo response to the puzzling statistic was to create Out Miami Foundation in the effort to increase participation.

He knew that the best way to increase participation was to engage more people. And what better group of individuals to engage than young professionals. To grab millennials’ attention, a new form of engagement needed to be crafted--one that wasn’t mission specific, yet still aided in our community’s nonprofit efforts.

He noticed during his time in Miami working with an LGBT nonprofit that a large number of supporters were only made up of a small group of individuals. He knew that in order for us to continue our goal towards full equality, we would need 100 percent participation or close to it.

Out Miami Foundation appealed to millennials with recurring professional networking events and snazzy shindigs like their annual Bowtie Bash. The nonprofit organization officially started February 27, 2015 with a spectacular affair at the ultra chic and trendy Palm Court in the Design District of Miami, Florida.

“You know the saying 'everyone wants a piece of the pie,'" Bayo asked, explaining his thought process. “The idea is to make the pie bigger for everyone.”

36

“We wanted a venue that reflected Miami’s future,” said Bayo. “An up and coming area with new energy.”

COMMUNITY It all occurs through the organization’s three interconnected programs. “Team Out Miami” mobilizes volunteers to give back to our community through service, which is open to all. You can visit their website to see different service needs. Or you can join them as they host one of their three annual community wide days of service. Their first one this year in February mobilized 70 volunteers to help with Pridelines’ new facility, which just so happens to be one of their “Strategic Partners.” The organization’s members choose three local nonprofits to aid through service and grants each year. “The Society @ Out Miami,” are members of the organization that choose which three local organizations will be the benefactors each year. Currently, their three partner’s are Pridelines, Yes Institute and Sage. 2017 “Strategic Partners” will be announced at their Bowtie Bash this year.

“We are a very new organization and there are a lot of opportunities to become a leader and help shape what we are doing,” suggests Bayo. Attend their monthly events and learn more about the organization at outmiami.org.

We wanted a venue that reflected Miami’s future," said Bayo. "An up and coming area with new energy." Just like Palm Court, Out Miami Foundation’s philanthropists (defined as donors and volunteers) are up and coming and new faces. In fact, 50 percent of the organization’s contributors are first time donors that have not only contributed their money but also their time to bettering the LGBT community in the Greater Miami area.

Derrick Dunning:

A Stylist's Dream BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

44

BRIEF ENCOUNTER

D

errick Dunning has arrived and he is ready to take Florida's fashion scene by storm. The 39-year-old stylist has been creating avant-grade looks since 2007 in Washington DC. But after styling high-profile clients for prestigious events like the White House Correspondence Dinner and an array of affiliate galas, he felt a calling to make his way down to South Florida.

OUTFIT: H.H. KLOSET

The stylish Dunning is a walking billboard for his craft. Everywhere he goes, his fashion sense follows and people can't help but stop the 6'1" artist to complement him on his stunning creations. His heart is in every ensemble he invents. It has been a passion of his since the age five when he began making illustrations out of his cartoon bedding. Come with us as we explore the mind of this artistic stylist.

PHOTO: DENNIS DEAN

When did you fall in love with fashion? Probably around fifth or sixth grade. I just didn't want to be like everybody else. Not having a lot of money forced me to get creative. I wanted to be noticed as any young lad trying to fit in does, but also be remembered for my own individuality. I would customize everything! It also gave me an entrepreneur spirit using my artistry on denim to sell. I was an 80s child so you can only imagine. Would you categorize your styles as avantgarde? I believe what I do is very avant-garde when it comes to costuming. It's very unordinary and not predictable. It will leave a strong lasting impression. My styling usually is based off of my clients' needs.

construction, textile, craftsmanship and how it lays on the body. I watch a lot of fashion documentaries on designers. That really puts me in the mindset of understanding their thought process. What celebrity would you love to style? Rihanna hands down! She is just on the pulse of everything terrific. But also I would love to style Gabourey Sidibe. I love how confident she is and aware of her inner magic. I want to give her a princess moment. Who is your style icon? I have two. My first Iris Apfel. I marvel how she stayed true to her style sensibility even in her golden years. She mixes influences from everywhere but yet it still makes sense. My second is the legendary TOM FORD! I mean does this dude do anything wrong? Elegant, masculine, detailed, precision and hits all the x's of what a sophisticated man should be. What are the essentials that every man should have in his closet? Well-tailored black suit; a crisp white shirt; a pair of indigo denim that fit impeccably; most certainly a good shoe that would make you go, “Damn! Last but not least, one chic statement piece whether it's a watch, necklace or bracelet. What are your hopes and dreams? I want to be known all over the world and have an opportunity to wake up everyday to do something I love. Travel the world and help other young hopefuls pursue their dreams. Too often, once you are blessed with the opportunity, some don't give back. To me, that's how you form a legacy. Paying it forward.

What is your personality like in regards to your style aesthetic? My temperament is to be unapologetic. Sometimes everybody won't get what you are doing. Which is cool. That's what makes the world interesting. Only wear things that make you feel good on the inside.

What is one thing about fashion that everyone should know? Fashion is freedom. It allows you to be whoever you want to be.

Are you technically trained? I'm not technically trained. However, I understand

Rafael Medina: Part of The Show BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

48

LAST CALL

S

enor Frog’s Drag Brunch presented by Brandon Voss opened to a packed house on Sunday, April 3. And although the performances were undeniably entertaining and filled with great surprises, the unforgettable breakout star was actually positioned behind the bar rather than center stage.

V

oss Events’ bartender Rafael Medina, a Venezuelan and Spaniard dreamboat, stole the show with his washboard abs, shimmering dark-black hair and chiseled facial features. You couldn’t help but ogle his way once he caught your eye. The best part is that he’s approachable because for him bartending is about meeting new people. So we cut to the front of the line to get to know him and make nice. • What are your 3 strongest personality traits? Caring, faithful and loyal • What do you think is your best body party? For me it's my lips. But people say my chest and abs. • Your advice, three “must dos” for washboard abs? Lots of crunches, leg lifting and a clean diet. • Would you rather a burger or salad? A burger and salad. I like them both together.

• Do you like to drive or bike? I’m always biking. • Are you a dancer or observer? I like to dance but then I also like to observe. • Swimwear – trunks or briefs? I love all swimwear. It depends how I feel that day. • Number of times you been rejected? Many times. Rejection is everywhere nowadays. • Are you taken or single? Dating a special person.

B Medina might not be on

stage but he sure does steal the spotlight with all eyes on him. Get to know more about him or just admire his gorgeous good looks from afar every Sunday at Senor Frog’s Drag Brunch by Brandon Voss and Edison Farrow. SENOR FROG'S 1450 COLLINS AVENUE MIAMI BEACH, FL 33139 305-397-8628

GAY TOURISM Photo Courtesy of Auston Matta

BY ALEXANDER KACALA

The newest movement in gay tourism is coming out of Australia. TropOut is an exclusive week-long travel festival for gay travelers from all corners of the globe. The first ever was set at the tropical paradise of Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach. The mission as a business is simple: to deliver exceptional and comfortable experiences for gay travelers-experiences filled with relaxation, cultural discovery and chic parties. We had the opportunity to experience TropOut firsthand. It’s taking the idea of a gay cruise and putting it on land. In an intimate environment, gays can come together and experience a destination together as a group. Approximately 120 travelers gathered at Phuket staying at two different resorts, the more cost conscious Cassia and the ultra-lux Angsana. Guests hailed from all over – from Los Angeles to Brazil to Paris, but most of the group came from Australia. But I mean who doesn’t love a lad with that accent? No complaints here. We sat down with founder Aaron Zoanetti between pool dips to get the down low on TropOut. From why it initially began to what’s next, we got the details on this endeavor redefining the future of gay travel and tourism.

52

TRAVEL What is TropOut? It’s a stylish gay beach festival which brings together like-minded gay travelers from all over the world for a week of chilling, partying and exploring together. How did the idea come about? The idea came about as my partner Jamie and I traveled to beach resorts and did not feel totally comfortable being ourselves. We looked at what was on the market for gay travelers and it was more geared toward circuit parties and gay cruises, and there was a bit of a gap for something a bit more stylish which allowed us to get out and explore the destination and return to some new and cool venues to party with fellow gay travelers in the evening. Why did you choose Thailand as the first destination? We chose Thailand because it’s a really welcoming destination for gay travelers. The tourism authority are really active in trying to get gay travelers to come to Thailand and experience the destination. It’s not only beautiful and culturally diverse and rich, it’s also a really friendly gay destination for gay travelers. It’s been absolutely beautiful the past couple of days. What’s next for TropOut? We’re gonna come back to Thailand later on in 2017 and for May of 2017, we’re taking TropOut

to a little Pacific island off Australia called New Caledonia. Tell me about that. It’s a French territory about three hours from Sydney by plane so you can get there easily from the states through Sydney. It’s a really nice destination that approached us. They want to take TropOut and gay travelers to their nation to let us have a good time and showcase what is beautiful in that country. The vibe has seemed really chill. I’ve done the circuit party thing, and this feels like a more diverse group of people connecting over experiences. I feel like with circuit parties there can be more of a connection over material things, where this is a connection over experiential moments. Definitely, most of our people have taken at least two day tours, cooking classes, sharing experiences from wherever they’re from. We’ve got about 21 different nationalities here and everyone’s jelling pretty well. It sounds corny, but they’ve turned into a bit of a family. I think you’re right – it’s because of those shared experiences creating new bonds and I think there have been a number of lasting experiences to come out of this. Rub Out Lower Back Pain in 3 Simple Steps BY TOM BONANTI 56

FITNESS

I

s low-back pain causing you to skip the gym, miss work and incur loads of medical expenses? Over 80% of all Americans struggle with lower back pain every year! A healthy, pain-free back is often something you take for granted until an injury occurs. You don’t have to be an orthopedic specialist or trainer to realize that taking a few preventative steps each day can keep your back in tip top form.

STEP ONE:

YOU’VE GOT TO LOSE THAT BELLY! Excessive abdominal weight (a big gut) can lead to an exaggerated lumbar curve (sway back). This in turn can cause postural problems while sitting, standing or walking, increasing the chances of inflaming and irritating nerves, discs and muscles. For those who sit all day at work, problems are multiplied since this position increases pressure on the lower back muscles, discs, ligaments, etc. by as much as 40%. So what can you do to lose that muffin top? Firstly, eat a high protein diet which will speed up your metabolism, help you burn fat, and build lean muscle all at once. Secondly, consume more citrus since the vitamin C in oranges, grapefruits, lemons, etc. has terrific fat fighting properties. Thirdly, uptake the amount of fiber (beans, whole grains, fruit and veggies) in your diet which will fill you up and clean you out. Fourthly, don’t skip meals, instead eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. This method of eating actually keeps your body from storing fat!

STEP TWO:

TRAIN THOSE ABS! The abdominal muscles must be exercised as seriously and consistently as every other muscle group in your body. Hitting abs two or three times a week is preferable to 100’s of sets of repetitions

day in and day out. Leg lifts, straight leg sit-ups and excessive twists are only going to cause more problems. Crunches and lots of them properly performed are the best plan of action here. A proper crunch is performed flat on your back, knees bent and legs elevated over a bench or exercise ball. Place your hands behind your head, but do not interlock your fingers. Cradle your neck and head as you crunch up bringing your elbows to your knees. Do not pull up with your hands on the back of your head as this will place undue strain on your seven cervical vertebrae. Do not roll up on your tail bone. Simply crunch, bringing your elbows to the knees, pause and contract your gut muscles, and return to starting position. Make sure to take your abs through their full range of motion as you contract the muscles hard at the top of the crunch. As you get stronger, continue to challenge these muscles by adding resistance to the exercise. For example, hold a dumbbell or plate on your chest as you perform your sets.

STEP THREE:

WATCH YOUR POSTURE! Your mother was right when she admonished you to “stand up straight!” Always stand tall, shoulders back, head and chin up and watch that tendency to slump forward with your head and upper body. Check you posture throughout the day. Take time to stretch. Watch your work ergonomics; be careful not to stay in the same position for hours on end. Stay active all day, get up and move around!

Feed Your Belly And Your Soul

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

T

he Philadelphia-based company Dining Out for Life is once again ready to fill our bellies as we feed our souls with their annual fundraiser that raises money for one participating nonprofit. Dining Out for Life has been raising funds for an array of nonprofits throughout the world since 1991 with an ingenious concept created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. Each year in 60 cities throughout the United States and Canada, a slew of restaurants for one specified day donates a portion of their proceeds to one desiring AIDS nonprofit in each respective town. For the past four years, Broward House has been the recipient of Fort Lauderdale’s Dining Out for Life, which will take place on Thursday, April 28.

HERE ARE A FEW PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS WE THINK ARE WORTH A TASTE.

Burger 21 Fort Lauderdale (2949 N Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale FL 33306; 954-909-0172). Roughly a year old, this new burger joint has deliciously crafted burgers and unforgettable shakes that are virtually impossible to find anywhere else --like the perfectly blend Chocolate Hazelnut Shake topped off with toasted marshmallows.

Chef, owners and married couple Mike Hampton and Christy Samoy dish out their take on international cuisine with soul. The food is a labor of love starting 16 years ago when they ditched Boston for New Orleans to learn all they could about cuisine.
