COMMENT OF THE WEEK:
“OK, then go in the bushes. I don’t know what to tell you, but I’m not gonna put my child’s life at risk because you want to change a law,” Stacy Dash told Entertainment Tonight. “So that you can be comfortable with your beliefs — which means I have to change my beliefs and my rights? No.”
JUNE 09, 2016 ON TOP YET AGAIN Bianca Del Rio wins again! Wolfe Releasing announced last week that it has acquired the revenge comedy Hurricane Bianca, starring our own Roy Haylock/Bianca Del Rio, winner of RuPaul's Drag Race. The sure-to-be-camp-classic made its world premiere at the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival in Toronto on Friday, June 3. Wolfe Releasing has secured exclusive worldwide rights with theatrical, DVD, VOD and digital platform releases planned for fall or winter 2016. GAY WEDDING GOOF Bud Light is getting in on LGBT Pride Month by featuring a samesex wedding in their latest commercial featuring Seth Rogen and Amy Schumer. Only they made a goof. Rogen and Schumer attend the wedding of Steve and Greg claiming that “gay weddings are just like anyone else’s wedding.” “By featuring Seth and Amy at a same-sex wedding, we’re showing how all weddings — regardless of who is getting married — share many similarities and

moments to celebrate,” Alex Lambrecht, the vice president of Bud Light at Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement. “We created this spot because equality for all Americans is a concept that unites many Bud Light drinkers.” Go online to our sister publication’s website, nextmagazine.com, to find out the mistake. LUNATIC STATUS Stacey Dash will always have a place in our hearts for her role in Clueless. Not so much for anything after that though, especially since she became a regular Fox News contributor, seemingly doing her best to spout more and more outrageous things every chance she gets. So we’re hardly surprised that she has awful things to say about the trans bathroom rights row. “She’s saying she wants to go into the women’s bathroom; she’s a woman now. It’s tyranny by the minority,” she told Entertainment Tonight when discussing Caitlyn Jenner. Why do I have to suffer because you can’t decide what you wanna be that day?”
‘90S NOSTAGLIA Everyone's favorite pop diva and ally to the LGBTQ community just released a cover of one her favorite 90's anthems--and one of ours too. Betty Who releases her cover of Donna Lewis' "I Love You Always Forever." Produced by longtime collaborator Peter Thomas, Who's rendition serves as a precursor to her long-awaited album, which is set to release later this year. Go to our sister publication’s website, nextmagazine. com, to hear the new ditty. A PLAY FOR THE GAYS Presidential Candidate, Bernie Sanders, is making headlines yet again in the gay community. But this time instead of battling a gay political icon (Barney Frank), he was partaking in one of our honored traditions, drag brunch. The democratic president hopeful was seen at a West Hollywood staple Hamburger Mary’s restaurant getting chummy with patrons and watching the drag show. Sanders was all smiles and even took pictures with potential “Feel the Bern” voters.

Flag Day: Wear Your Pride
z
J
une 14 is Flag Day, a commemorative day of when the flag of the United States was adopted in 1777. Essentially, it’s a day to show American patriotism. But the month of June provides our community another reason to celebrate; it’s the start of LGBT pride. And this year in 2016, President Barack Obama solidified the deal with a Presidential Proclamation.
The month of June is officially LGBT Pride Month in America. So why not use Flag Day to celebrate our pride. We at Next magazine propose that on June 14 we wear our pride. Check out the LGBT pride flags that represent your proud identity to don your pride on Tuesday, June 14. N – Jameer Baptiste

US DRAG
I
f you haven’t heard, the ultimate Brittney Spears impersonator Derrick Barry will be performing live and in color this Saturday, June 11 at the Ultimate Miami Drag Queen event. The fierce competition, co-starring Lady Bunny, will put our local queens to the test at the chance to win the title of South Florida’s Ultimate Miami Drag Queen.
PHOTO KRISTOFERREYNOLDS.COM
Barry, himself, is no stranger to competition. The starlet Las Vegas performer has played the contestant role on television shows like America’s Got Talent and most recently on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8. But this interview isn’t about Barry’s ploy to trump the rest--because we all know how that played out.
16
Rather, this sit down was meant to hopefully get some juicy, new insight into what the Spears twin had to say about her former challengers and his unconventional, yet enduring, relationships. Can we just say he’s too kind! But there’s still juice to quench your thirst, so take a sip.
WHAT’S In the beginning of Drag Race, Bob the Drag Queen was your arch nemesis, but you two were able to turn that around. Are you two still buddy buddy now? In the beginning, he definitely was my rival, but as soon as we worked together that changed because the same thing that made us clash (our strong personalities) is the same thing that made us friends. I’m in his Purse First music video and there are some other projects that we’re working on together. He became my biggest supporter. Can you rank your fellow Drag Race contestants in order of best to least in terms of talent? I can do best and least. Best hands down is none other than Bob. Simply because he is so well rounded, even if his makeup wasn’t beauty, he would convince you that it was. He’s just that charismatic. Least would have to be Laila McQueen. I only say that because she didn’t have the confidence in herself. And when you lack confidence, you are your own worst enemy. Even though she’s a brilliant makeup artist and very creative, she blocked her own growth on the show. If you could do Drag Race all over again, what would you do differently? I would audition for season nine instead. I wasn’t ready to do the type of makeup they were looking for. I wish I would have challenged myself more creatively and believed in myself more, but they really break me down as the season went on. I came in strong thinking I could win it, but slowly my art form of drag was dragged down as somehow less, when it’s actually one of the oldest forms of drag.
Thunderfuck). Both of us obviously found him attractive, but there was something else that connected us three and within a month we were all together. It happened naturally and it wasn’t forced. Were you always welcoming to a thruple? I never thought I would be in one. I didn’t know or understand how it worked. You know, growing up you're taught to be with one person. My whole life, I felt like gay open relationships were complicating. But we’re not in an open relationship; it’s just the three of us. It’s actually pretty conservative, if that makes sense, compared to people out doing random hookups. There’s no cheating or anything like that.
Who would you say had the ultimate worst moment on the show? The double elimination was horrible. That lip sync sucked enough to where neither one of them at that point were good enough to survive. On the other hand, it was a great moment for the rest of us. Two down--that was good news. We enjoyed it.
After it all (Drag Race, America Has Talent, Vegas and The Tonight Show) is said and done, what is your ultimate happiness? Being on stage; it’s always been about being on stage. There’s nothing that makes me happier. It gives me life. That’s why I perform. I’ll be a 90-year-old man and still want to have an audience. If a week goes by without a show, I get anxiety and just can’t wait for the next one.
I heard that you are in a thruple relationship? I’ve been with my boyfriend Nick San Pedro, an artist, for nine years, and then four years ago we met Mackenzie Claude (aka Nebraska

ON THE COVER
J DEREK MONTEIRO PROBABLY NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT HIS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS IN THE SMALL TOWN OF HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS WOULD TAKE HIM ON A JOURNEY TO NATIONAL FAME AND RECOGNITION BUT WITH A LITTLE INSIGHT YOU CAN SEE HOW IT DID. GROWING UP IN A VERY TRADITION YET UNORTHODOX PORTUGUESE FAMILY, MONTEIRO HAD A UNIQUE UPBRINGING IN WHICH HE WAS SURROUNDED BY DANCING AND MUSIC. HE’S HUGE FAMILY WAS PART OF A FOLK GROUP THAT TRAVELED THE EAST COAST PERFORMING AT DIFFERENT PORTUGUESE CLUBS. THAT EXPERIENCE HELPED CULTIVATE MONTEIRO’S LOVE FOR MUSIC, WHICH ONLY INTENSIFIED, AS HE GOT OLDER. SOON THE WITTY AND CHARMING MONTEIRO WAS EXPLORING THE TURNTABLES AS A DJ FOR HIS BROTHER’S FRIEND. HE LATCHED ON TO HIS BROTHER AND HIS FRIENDS IN THE LATE 90S, TAGGING ALONG TO UNDERGROUND DANCE PARTIES AND RAVES. IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. THE BUDDING DJ’S HOBBY QUICKLY BECAME HIS OBSESSION AND ULTIMATELY HIS CAREER. HE SOON LEFT HIS SMALL TOWN FOR LOS ANGELES, WHERE HE STARTED TO LIVE OPENLY AND BEGAN TO ESTABLISH HIS BRAND AS A UNIVERSAL DJ. THE HANDSOME AND TALENTED MONTEIRO IS JETTING ACROSS THE COUNTRY EXPOSING HIS LOVE FOR MUSIC ONE BEAT AT A TIME. WE COULDN’T HELP BUT MIX IT UP WITH THE LAID-BACK GUY WHILE IN SOUTH BEACH AFTER HIS SET AT SCORE NIGHTCLUB. IF YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT SPINNING, HERE’S YOUR INSPIRATION. BY JAMEER BAPTISTE What helped you build your national name as a DJ? I think my strong work ethic and putting myself out there really helped. I've been at this a while, and putting in the work while consistently striving to kill every set, I think has started to pay off. How did you get your start? When I moved to LA, I started Continued on next page n

working at Rage nightclub and they gave me a shot along with playing private parties and birthday parties for some great people, who are now my friends, in the city. It all started when I moved out to LA in 2002. In your opinion, for someone just starting to DJ, should they get a mentor or is it best for them to go at it alone? Everyone is different. I didn’t have a mentor but I had lots of friends who did it constantly as work. So I can see why a mentor could help. What is the hardest part about being a DJ? I love this way too much to think of it as being hard. In any career, you have to kick a$$ and go after it. Nothing comes easy, so (personally) I don’t mind the hard work to stay relevant. What do you feel is the wave of the future for DJ technology? The wave scares me a little. As technology progresses, there are programs that will match music for you. But if you’re not up there listening and matching

beats (yourself ) and but yet have a computer doing it for you. Please, go home and don’t return! Wh at a r e t h e m o s t impor tant aspec ts to being a good DJ? I think being authentic. You have to do it for the love of music and not because you want to be popular. Just know what you like and do it honestly. Work hard and study what you love. How did you break free of being a local DJ to booking gigs nationally? H u s t l i n g a n d h av i n g good relationships. That combination and getting the job done properly gets people talking and wanting to hear more from you. What advice would you give to aspiring DJs? (1.) Do your work and practice and master the craft. (2.) Don’t get caught up in a computer screen, but rather feel the crowd and the vibe you’re creating. (3.) Always stay humble and have fun with it. It’s music, which is one of the greatest escapes. (4.) Go out and make people happy. N

BRIEF ENCOUNTER
Go Deejay, Go Deejay hen we are partying up a storm, the hot W dance compilations have to come from somewhere. The superior sounds we get to

By now you should know them all by name, but just in case you haven’t had the pleasure to meet them up close and personal, allow us to reintroduce our beat-makers. To those we couldn't feature we love you all. There're many more to come.

Martin Kreloff At A Glance BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
A
rtist Martin Kreloff’s attributes part of his success to his days in Miami, Florida. It‘s said that Kreloff’s contemporary work in the 1976 Miami Says Art show put the artist on the map. The Brooklyn native actually graduated with his art degrees at the University of Miami and as an avid gay activist co-created Miami’s first White Party in 1985. Some of his prolific work can be seen at the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach. On June 10, Kreloff’s will be exhibiting his Retrospective of 50 Years’ Work in Las Vegas at The Studio @ Sahara West Library. We bring a touch of that art at a glance. In the ensuing pages, see his various mix-medium artworks of celebrities, portraits and eccentric Japanese themed art. 37

Summertime Workout Check List BY TOM BONANTI
43
S
ummertime has arrived in South Florida. Whether you intend to stay put and enjoy the beach, the clubs, and less traffic, or plan to get away to Provincetown or some other cooler destination, don’t put your fitness regime on hold. In fact, this is a perfect time to rev up your current exercise program, change it altogether, or simply put some extra time in on those problem areas that you’ve neglected all year long. Here is a full body summer check list, head to toe, with advice, facts and exercises to help you put some heat under those workouts.
√ BRAIN:
The rest of your body degenerates much faster with age than the brain. In order to keep those neurons sharp and intact, read a book at the pool or beach, work crossword puzzles, join a bridge group, zone out with yoga, do math problems, or just listen to some quality tunes. The mind is a terrible thing to waste!
44
√ HEART:
Heart attacks kill one out of every five men each minute. Don’t become a casualty of cardiovascular disease, instead, lower your risk via regular moderate exercise. Anything cardio will do (swimming, power walking, biking, jogging, martial arts, etc.).
√ CHEST:
There’s no better badge of fitness than a great set of pecs--and they’re damn sexy, too. Grab a workout buddy, up your weights, and try some compound sets, forced reps and drop sets with your bench presses, incline presses, incline dumbbell flyes, and cable crossovers.
√ ABDOMINALS: No matter how many ab classes you take, the key to achieving a sexy six pack is adhering to a low-fat, carb-controlled nutritional plan. Work out your abdominals twice to three times per week like any other important muscle group.
FITNESS
Feet elevated crunches and bent-knee leg raises are your best bet for building these essential core muscles.
√ ARMS: Bulging, soft-ball size biceps are powerful and eye catching, but don’t neglect your triceps. These latter muscles make up 75% of your upper arm, so they require 3x the attention of your biceps if you want powerful “guns”. Front cable push downs, close-grip push-ups, dumbbell kick- backs and parallel bar dips are my recommended exercises for building beefy triceps. √ BUTT:
No matter where you strut your stuff, all eyes will follow you if you’ve got a great butt. All humor aside, your gluteals (the muscles that make up your ass) are important in all activities (running, walking, climbing stairs, getting up out of a chair, etc.) so they need to be worked and kept in condition. Walking lunges, squats, leg presses and weight free jump squats will build great glutes as well as thighs and calves.
√ KNEES:
Sitting behind a desk all day or traveling in a car for hours can cause dull aching pain in the knees because the joints aren’t being sufficiently lubricated. Do stretches for your knees regularly. Sit back, extend legs outward, with knees slightly bent and heels on the floor for a few seconds. Flex thighs and hold for 20 seconds. Do this several times each day and between sets when working out. Have a great summer and stay fit and active no matter where you may roam! Take advantage of some down time to relax and chill. N Tom Bonanti is a certified fitness trainer and licensed massage therapist (MA#40288) with his own one on one gym and studio www.pumpnincgym.com at 1271 NE 9th avenue in Ft. Lauderdale, fl. 33304. Tips For No More Jet Lag
A little planning goes a long way in jet lag deterrence, so stay on schedule, without losing Zzzs, with these preventative tips. BY MIKEY ROX

TRAVEL
1
Pack 24 hours in advance, and skip the going-away party. You’ll stress less the night before with travel essentials in order ahead of time, and no alcohol means you have a better chance of staying on-track sleep-wise.
2
Even though you’re excited to start your vacay, stick to your routine: Eat, exercise and sleep sufficiently to ward off the lag.
3 Adjust your schedule (just a bit) to accommodate the impending time change. Go to bed an hour early for a few days in advance of your trip if you’re going east, vice-versa if going west; same goes for your meal schedule.
4 Make yourself comfortable while traveling. Pack your own pillow and small blanket to help induce relaxation while en route.
5 Kick the caffeine. Coffee and soda can help you stay awake when needed, but you’ll crash (and wake you up more often once you fall asleep), which will further disrupt your peaceful transition.
