Florida Cup Figures Show Quality on Display Again in 2022

he Florida Cup has a rich history dating back to the first running in April of 2003 at Tampa Bay Downs and the annual Florida-bred showcase at again offered a day of impressive winners during the 2022 version (see full story starting on page 40). The Florida Cup has seen future and current millionaires such as Revved Up (2005 Turf); Nightmare Affair (2005-06 Sprint); Soldier’s Dancer (2007 Sophomore Turf); Hooh Why (2012-13 Turf Distaff); Imperial Hint (2016 Sophomore and 2018 Sprint); World Approval (2015 Sophomore Turf and 2017 Turf Classic); and Extravagant Kid (2019 Sprint); some of which, like 2017 Eclipse Award Champion Male Turf Horse World Approval, have gone on to even greater heights. While none of the six winners in the 2022 Florida Cup have achieved seven figure status yet, they proved once again to be an impressive group, certainly with the potential for reaching greater levels of achievement. The most accomplished winner on this year’s Florida Cup—held on March 27—was Shifty She, who won the $110,000 Pleasant Acres Distaff Turf by an impressive four lengths while leading from start to finish. Already a Grade 3-winner of the Noble Damsel at Belmont Park in October, her dominant victory in the Distaff Turf on Florida Cup day may have been her best race to date repeating the 95 Beyer Speed Figure she produced when second to Sweet Melania in the Grade 3 Suwanne River at Gulfstream two races prior on Dec. 18. On Florida Cup day, she also produced a head turning =7+ Ragozin Sheets figure and a 115 TimeFormUS Rating. The TimeFormUS Rating is according to a March 18 tweet by TimeFormUS guru Craig Milkowski. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. for Chris Pallas and Harvey Rothenberg’s Pedigree Partners LLC, Shifty She is sure to be a force on the female turf circuit later in 2022. But her Ragozin and TimeFormUS figures were both 6

the second best of the day behind $110,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore-winner King Cab, who registered 6” Ragozin Sheets figure and a 116 TimeFormUS Rating to go along with his 92 Beyer. The Beyer was the second best in his young career compared to the 94 speed figure produced two starts back while winning a first level allowance at Gulfstream Park by seven-and-a-quarter lengths over seven furlongs. Trainer Edward Plesa Jr. said after King Cab’s front-running, four-and-a-half-length victory in the Sophomore—in which he defeated stakes-winners Lightening Larry, Cattin and graded-stakes-placed Dean Delivers—that he will likely keep the son of Ocala Stud’s successful second crop sire Noble Bird, in one turn races in the near future. There he could perhaps join the likes of Florida Cup Sophomore winners Weigelia (2004), Electrify (2006), City of West (2013), Prudhoe Bay (2014), Imperial Hint (2016) and Jackson (2019), who all finished their career as graded-stakes winners, with Weigelia and Imperial Hint as multiple graded-stakes winners. Another impressive winner on the day was Pudding, who as a 7-year-old, won his first career stakes in the $110,000 NYRABets Sprint, defeating last year’s winner Tap It to Win. Stakes-placed in his two most recent races when third to Bank on Shea in the $75,000 Pelican on Feb. 12 and third to Gatsby in the $100,000 Sunshine Sprint on Jan. 15, both at Gulfstream Park, Pudding had the highest Beyer number on the day with a 97 while also producing an 8+ Ragozin and a 110 TimeFormUS Rating. So trainer Elizabeth Dobles may have found a long-hidden secret to the gelding’s success after claiming him for $25,000 in July. Florida Focus Grade 3 Sweetest Chant is First Stakes Victory for Opalina Earns $25,000 Florida-bred Win Bonus Teneri Farm and J Stables LLC’s Opalina shot to the lead at the top of the stretch on her way to her first career stakes victory in the Grade 3 Sweetest Chant at Gulfstream Park Feb. 5. The Florida-bred daughter of Optimizer defeated eight other 3-year-old fillies who went about a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the turf in the $100,000 Sweetest Chant. She also earned a $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus that was presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. With Luis Saez aboard again for trainer Roderick Rodriquez, Opalina broke quickly from post two but surrendered the lead to longshot Myfavoritedaughter, who took the field of nine through quarter-mile splits in :23.16 and :46.88. Saez gave Opalina her cue around the far turn as she pursued Myfavoritedaughter, who took a clear lead into the stretch. However, Opalina took over inside the final furlong and held off a late running Ambitieuse to win by a length in 1:41.30. Ambitieuse was second, a length-and-a-quarter faster than Miss You Ella in third. They were followed in order by Myfavoritedaughter, Battle Charge, Roughly a Diamond, Hal’s Dream and Nostaglic.

Opalina paid $10.60 to win. Bred in Florida by Teneri Farm and Bernardo Alvarez Calderon, Opalina is out of the Kitten’s Joy mare Go Kitten Go and now has two wins in six starts with two seconds and a third. The $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus and the winner’s share of the Sweetest Chant purse amounted to a $84,520 payday for Opalina and increased her career bankroll to $160,770. Go Kitten Go has also produced stakesplaced Red Hornet and another winner from three starters and four foals. n

Sweeping Move Returns Drafted to Winning Ways in Grade 3 Toboggan Drafted went from last to first with an impressive move around the far turn before drawing away to win the Grade 3 Toboggan by four-and-a-half lengths at Aqueduct Feb. 5. The Florida-bred son of Field Commission defeated four other rivals over seven furlongs in the $145,000 Toboggan for 4-year-olds and older. Confidently ridden by Jose Ortiz, Drafted broke evenly from post three but dropped back to last as 1-5 favorite Happy Medium led through a quarter-mile in :23.55 and the half-mile in :47.04. Drafted had the momentum to pull away from his rivals in the run for home as Repo Rocks took over the second spot on the outside of Happy Medium in third. Drafted cruised under the wire to finish in 1:25.06 on the muddy track with Repo Rocks finishing second, six lengths ahead of Happy Medium in third. Hopeful Treasure was fourth with War Tocsin fifth. Drafted returned $15.80 on a $2 win ticket at odds of 6-1. Trained by David P. Duggan for Dublin Fjord Stables LLC, Racepoint Stables, Kevin D. Hilbert and Thomas E. O’Keefe, Drafted earned $82,500 for the Toboggan victory, increasing his career earnings to $844,693

An 8-year-old gelding, Drafted is out of Keep the Profit, by Darn that Alarm and was bred by John Foster, Barbara Hooker and Field Commission Partnership. Keep the Profit had seven winners from nine starters and 10 foals. Drafted twice went through the auction ring at Ocala Breeders’ Sales but did not sell as a yearling at the 2015 August Sale. However, he was purchased for $35,000 by Eoin Harty out of the Kim Harrison consignment in March of 2016. More recently, Drafted was purchased by Brian Gleeson for $10,892 at the 2017 Godolphin Racing in Dubai September Sale. n

Yes I Am Free Gives Owners, Trainer First Graded Stakes Win with Gulfstream Turf Sprint Florida-bred Yes I Am Free and jockey Emisael Jaramillo gave trainer Laura Cazares and owners John and Paula Szalay, who race in the name of Golden Kernel Racing Stable, their first graded stakes victory by winning the $100,000 Gulfstream Turf Sprint by three-and-a-quarter lengths at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 12. The Gulfstream Turf Sprint featured a field of seven 4-year-olds and older going

five furlongs on the turf. In the Gulfstream Turf Sprint, Yes I Am Free launched first from the starting gate from post four with Florida-bred Warrior’s Pride, who was the second choice in the wagering at 9-2 based on his win in the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint two starts back, also breaking well from the inside post one. Warrior’s Pride and Junior Alvarado sprinted to a length-and-a-half advantage on Yes I Am Free in second down the backstretch with Gear Jockey and longshot Breakthrough running together in third to their outside and another length-and-a-half back. vantage on Yes I Am Free to his outside as they turned for home and those two raced through the stretch in tandem as Belgrano, Breakthrough and Gear Jockey battled for third while two lengths farther back. Inside the final sixteenth, Yes I Am Free shook free on the outside and went on to finish in :56.07 on the firm turf, just .46 of a second off of the course record of :55.61, set by Desirable Moment in March of 2004. Richy finished a head better than Belgrano in third followed by Warrior’s Pride, Gear Jockey, Omaha City and Breakthrough. Yes I Am Free eventually went off at 8-1 and paid $18 to win. Yes I Am Free was a $62,500 claim by

Cazares for Golden Kernel Racing Stable in April at Gulfstream and has since run strictly in overnight handicaps and stakes having finished third in the Bob Umphey in his second start for the new connections. Yes I Am Free now has eight wins, two seconds and three thirds from 20 starts with earnings of $360,994. As a 2-year-old, he was a $135,000 purchase by Justin Casse as an agent at the 2018 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale where he was consigned by Hawk’s Nest. Yes I Am Free is by Uncaptured out of the Florida-bred mare Yes It’s Valid, by Yes It’s True and was bred in Florida by Sherry R. Mansfield and Kenneth H. Davis. Yes I am Free is a half-brother to Nikee Kan, who was second to Miss Auramet in the Grade 3 Ladies Turf Sprint later on the Gulfstream Park card and Yes It’s Valid has four winners from six foals. Yes It’s Valid has also produced an unraced 3-year-old colt, Excelsior Venice, by Ride On Curlin; an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Uncaptured and was bred in 2021 to Gunnevera, who stands at Pleasant Acres Stallions. n

Miss Auramet Turns the Tables to Win Ladies Turf Sprint In her last race on Dec. 31 at Gulfstream, Florida-bred Miss Auramet finished sixth of seven as the 7-5 favorite in the $100,000 Abundantia with the trackman describing her race as a “brutal trip” in the past performance comments. Miss J McKay won the Abundantia by a length-and-a-half. But it was clear sailing in the $100,000 Ladies Turf Sprint for Miss Auramet, who defeated six female rivals, 4-years-old and older going five furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream on Feb. 12. Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Miss Auramet sprinted to the lead from post six and cruised through a quarter-mile in :22.79 on the firm turf. She extended to her lead throughout to finish the half-mile in :45.21 while leading by

a length on her way to winning by nearly two lengths in :56.87. Florida-bred Nikee Kan, who is a half-sister to Yes I Am Free, winner of the Grade 3 Gulfstream Turf Sprint three races earlier, was second at odds of 27-1 and a length faster than Reinagol in third. Miss J McKay was fourth followed in order by Florida-bred Poseidon’s Passion, Guardian Moon and Sister Peacock. Miss Auramet was allowed to leave the starting gate at 7-2 and paid $9.40 to win. Owned by David Melin, Leon Ellman and Plesa’s wife, Laurie, the consistent Miss Auramet has now won 11 of 28 career starts with eight seconds and three thirds with earnings of $548,750. She is by Uncaptured out of Hello Rosie, by Yes It’s True and was bred in Florida by Marion G. Montanari. She passed through the sales ring at Ocala Breeders’ Sales twice in her youth having sold for $42,000 to Hot Scot Racing Stable from the Summerfield consignment of Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck at the 2017 October Yearling Sale. Florida Focus Millionaire Extravagant Kid Retired Florida-bred Extravagant Kid, owned by Virginia businessman and Colonial Downs’ all-time leading owner David Ross, has been retired from racing at the age of 9. The Kiss the Kid gelding finished his brilliant career with $1,704,683 in purse earnings from 54 starts which includes 15 wins, 18 seconds and seven thirds. Ross and trainer Brendan P. Walsh claimed Extravagant Kid for $75,000 from breeder Frank Vicino’s Vi-

Ross—who races in the stable name DARRS’s Inc.—with Walsh and Racing Manager James Bredin are all committed to finding the right next home for Extravagant Kid. “We are on a mission to find him the perfect place because he has brought so much joy to everyone who has been a part of his life,” Ross said. “He will thrive in his second career, possibly as a riding horse because he loves to do trails. We want to make sure he is happy and productive going forward.” Ross said his biggest thrill as an owner was Extravagant Kid’s victory in the $1 Million, Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint sponsored by Azizi Developments last March in Dubai. “I’ve had a lot of nice horses over the 10

Chess Master Explodes to Turf Dash Victory Chess Master posted a front-running, twoand-a-half-length victory from Xy Speed in the $100,000 Turf Dash Stakes for older males going five furlongs on the Tampa Bay Downs grass course on Feb. 19. Trained and owned by Kerri Raven, who claimed the son of Overdriven for $32,000 in January of 2021, Chess Master covered the distance in :55.56 under jockey Jesus Castanon. The Turf Dash victory was the first in a stakes for Raven, who has saddled Chess Master for seven victories from 11 starts since the claim. Bred in Florida by Brenda K. Jones, Chess Master is out of the Chester House mare Chesty. He earned $60,000, which included the $15,000 in Florida-bred bonus money provided by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. The Connector finished third in the nine-horse field, while never threatening the top two. They were followed in order by Florida-bred Discreet Tune, Backtohisroots, 2-1 favorite Bad Beat Brian, Skippy’s Strike, Jazzy Times and Hard Count. Baby Boomer

Officiating Continues Winning Pattern With Tom Fool Victory In five starts since a three-and-a-halflength victory in the $75,000 Bear’s Den at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 5, Vegso Racing Stable’s homebred Officiating has won every other race including the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector two starts prior to the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap at Aqueduct on March 5. After the Bear’s Den, Officiating did not respond to the Gulfstream Park Tapeta while out of the money in the $65,000 Showing Up won by King of Dreams on Nov. 6 and most recently was third behind winner Speaker’s Corner in the Grade 3 Fred Hooper going a mile at Gulfstream on Jan. 29. But the Florida-bred trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. added another victory in that sequence in the $194,000 Tom Fool with a five-and-a-half-length win ahead of defending champion Chateau. In his first trip at six furlongs, Officiating won in a time of 1:12.22 on the fast track. The Tom Fool had a field of five 4-yearolds and older with both Chateau and Officiating toting the high weight assignments of 123 pounds. Race favorite Chateau, who was bet down to 4-5, jumped out on top from post five and quickly had daylight on Officiating and Prime Factor together in second as Repo 12

Rocks missed the break from the inside post. After clicking off a quarter-mile in :22.66 Chateau turned for home while still in front after a :46.19 half-mile but Officiating began to loom as a threat on the outside. Down the stretch, Officiating began to wear down Chateau and took over inside the final furlong to win with ease while Chateau held second, a length-and-a-quarter faster than Repo Rocks in third. Prime Factor and Timeless Bounty completed the order of finish. Officiating went to the post at 11-2 and returned $13.40 to win. It was the fourth victory in 16 starts for Officiating, who also has four seconds and three thirds. The $110,000 first-place check in the Tom Fool increased his earnings to $331,097. Officiating is by Blame out of Come a Callin, by Dixie Union. Come a Callin has also produced Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1)-winner and Eclipse Award champion Caledonia Road; The Vid Stakes-winner One of a Kind, both Florida-breds; and 3-yearold Celestial, who is unplaced in one start. She also has an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Munnings and was bred to Quality Road in 2022. n

Jacks or Better Farm Inc.’s homebred Spirit Wind erupted from post five and was never threatened as the Florida-bred filly put in a commanding performance in winning the $100,000 Any Limit Stakes by two-anda-half lengths at Gulfstream Park March 19. Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Spirit Wind topped a Florida-bred trifecta in the six furlong Any Limit for 3-year-old fillies, with One Identity finishing second, a length-anda-quarter in front of Strategic Bird in third. One Identity was previously undefeated in two starts while Strategic Bird won the Sandpiper at Tampa Bay Downs two starts back in December. Sent off as the 6-5 favorite after breaking her maiden by 15 ½ lengths in her second career start against Florida-bred special weight maiden fillies at Gulfstream on Feb. 18 over six furlongs, Spirit Wind was almost as dominant in the Any Limit as she had a length advantage on Strategic Bird while sprinting through the first quarter-mile in :21.94. She relaxed very little while completing the halfmile in :44.39 as she extended her lead to two lengths turning for home as Strategic Bird continued to give chase in second and One Identity tried to close from third. Florida-bred Pair Take New York Claiming Championships Two unheralded Florida-breds made the most of their trips to the center stage at Aqueduct on March 26 as Baby I’m Perfect and Awesome Indra won starter stakes on the New York Claiming Championship card. Baby I’m Perfect and jockey Dylan Davis tracked a fast early pace in the $70,000 Peeping Tom before taking the lead inside the final furlong and drawing away to win by four-and-a-half lengths. Baby I’m Perfect began to close the gap around the turn and went four-wide at the top of the lane before taking over and drawing away in deep stretch. He finished in 1:18.40 while Supreme Aura rallied from last to get second ahead of a tiring Aristocratic in third. Earns Trip to Kentucky Derby with Fountain of Youth Victory BY BROCK SHERIDAN Florida-bred Simplification punched a ticket to the 2022 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) with a come from behind victory in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park on March 5 under jockey Jose Ortiz. The Fountain of Youth, which offered 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner, featured a field of 11 3-year-olds in the mile-and-one-sixteenth race which also acts as the main local prep race for the $1 million Curlin Florida presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms @Xalapa (G1). The race was marred by an unfortunate incident in the far turn when High Oak clipped heels with A.P’s Secret approaching the quarter-pole and fell, causing a trailing Galt to also fall. Both horses were reported to be uninjured and jockeys Junior Alvarado and Joel Rosario, who rode High Oak and Galt respectively, also appeared to be okay. But the day belonged to owner Tami Bobo’s Simplification, who is trained by Antonio Sano and won the Fountain of Youth as the 5-2 favorite. Considered to be a front-runner after winning the $150,000 Mucho Macho Man while leading from start to finish going a mile at Gulfstream on Jan. 1, Simplification tossed his head at the start of the Grade 3 Holy Bull on Feb. 5 at Gulfstream and was forced to run far back in the field of nine early. But he rallied to finish second to White Abarrio that day and proved to Sano he was more versatile than originally thought. “When [Simplification] broke bad last time I thought, ‘What a disaster.’ I learned that the horse can run in the front or from behind,” Sano said “He doesn’t have to be in the front. The plan today for the race was that he didn’t need the front.” Continued on next page

SIMPLIFICATION After breaking well from post two, Ortiz settled Simplification into mid-pack along the rail around the clubhouse turn as the Florida-bred pair of Markhamian and Dean Delivers ran one two through a first quarter-mile in :23.77. Ortiz and Simplification had to check slightly down the backstretch while in tight and three off the rail but were able to settle into seventh behind a tight-packed group as Markhamian clipped off a :48.27 half-mile. Around the turn, Dean Delivers put a neck in front with A.P.’s Secret to his outside and 5-2 second choice Emmanuel began to move while four-wide. Simplification followed Emmanuel before surging to the lead on the far outside to take the lead into the run for home. Emmanuel and Dean Delivers gave chase in second but Simplification drew clear to win by three-and-a-half lengths ahead of a late running In Due Time in second with 87-1 longshot O Captain rallying late to finish third. Emmanuel was fourth, followed in order by Dean Delivers, Rattle N Roll, A.P.’s Secret, Markhamian and Howling Time. Giant Game and Mo Donegal were scratched. In Due Time earned 20 Derby qualifying points while O Captain earned 10 and Emmanuel five. Simplification finished the distance in 1:44.04 and paid $7 to win. “For me I liked the trip. I talked to Jose [Saturday] morning and said you don’t need to be in the front. The start was very important. If the horse has a good start and a safe trip, you won’t have a problem,” Sano said. “I wanted him to stay outside. Our horse in front with the speed horses won’t have a chance. The horse responded to Jose. He said, ‘Go,’ and it was all good.” “I knew [Simplification] was going to be tough,” Ortiz said. “I worked him and Antonio had a lot of confidence in him. He broke well. He pulled me into the race. He put me there. At the three-eighths pole, I decided to go wide and follow Emmanuel and he was there for me.” Simplification is by Not This Time out of the stakes-placed mare Simply Confection, by Candy Ride (Arg) and was bred in Florida by France Weiner and her late husband Irwin Weiner. Simplification is the first foal for Simply Confection, who was second to West Coast Belle in the 2014 Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs and has an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Mendelssohn and an unnamed yearling filly by Audible. Simply Confection is currently in foal Union Rags. “I am very proud,” France Weiner said. “And the best news is I still have a half-sister to him [by Audible] who just turned a year old. She is a very, very fine filly. She is a beautiful strong looking filly with a lot of promise. I plan to sell her in the summer.”

Simplification went through the 2019 Keeneland November Sales with the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment, but was an RNA ($50,000). She was then approached by Bobo later, who purchased Simplification privately.

Should Simplification make the Kentucky Derby, he would be the second Derby starter for Weiner, who along with her latr husband Irwin, bred Florida-bred Closing Argument, who was second to Giacomo in 2005. “This might be my second trip to the Derby, so I think I’m luckier than most people. Simplification is the first Florida-bred winner of the Fountain of Youth since Wildcat Red in 2014. he eight horses who make up the stellar class of 2021 Florida-bred champions won 14 stakes, including seven graded stakes during another banner year for the Sunshine State thoroughbred industry. Four of the eight were graded stakes winners: Pappacap, Golden Pal, Firenze Fire and Shifty She; while Golden Pal and Shifty She were also crowned multiple champions. Three of the group were homebreds raced by their breeders: Pappacap, Firenze Fire and Shifty She. Golden Pal, who previously raced for his breeder, was later sold privately. Outfoxed and Sound Machine were sold at public auctions and Livingmybestlife was claimed in her first start. Of the eight champions, four are by stallions who stood in Florida at the time of breeding: Outfoxed (Valiant Minister); Livingmybestlife (The Big Beast); Firenze Fire (Poseidon’s Warrior) and Shifty She (Gone Astray).

FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 2-YEAR-OLD COLT George and Karen Russell, who own and operate Rustlewood Farm Inc., generally breed to sell. And that was the plan with Pappacap, who was originally entered in the 2020 Keeneland September yearling sale. But with the sale situation unsteady amid the COVID pandemic, the Russells decided maybe it would be best to point the Gun Runner colt to the 2-year-olds in training sales. Off he went to trainer Mark Casse’s Ocala farm to be broken and trained. As the colt progressed, Casse advised the Russells to keep him and they decided to do just that. As it turned out, it was likely one of the best decision the Russells made all year. Pappacap broke his maiden at first asking on May 14 at Gulfstream Park. Out of the Scat Daddy mare Pappascat, the bay colt won by two-and-three-quarters lengths and his winning time for the five furlongs was :58.40 on the fast track. Three months later and in only his second career start, Pappacap became a graded-stakes winner. Shipped to Del Mar for the Best Pal (G2) on Aug. 7, Pappacap once again proved that the Russells, who were in attendance, made the right decision. Breaking well from the gates, Pappacap settled into third before jockey Joe Bravo swung Pappacap to the outside on the turn and took a narrow lead at the top of the stretch. Pappacap won by four-and-three-quarters lengths in 1:11.66 for the six furlongs. With the graded-stakes victory, Pappacap became the first black type stakes-winner for Gun Runner. Pappacap closed out his outstanding juvenile season with a pair of Grade 1 runner-up finishes to eventual Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old male Corniche. On Oct. 1 at Santa Anita Park, Pappacap was second to that rival in the American Pharoah (G1) before finishing second again to Corniche in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) on Nov. 5 at Del Mar. The aptly-named Outfoxed did exactly that to her rivals in her debut racing season. In two added-money outings, the Valiant Minister filly outran her FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes competitors by a winning margin total just shy of 23 lengths. Bred by Baoma Corp. and raced by LNJ Foxwoods, Outfoxed made her career debut on July 15 at Saratoga in a $100,000 maiden special weight. She would finish third to eventual Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly Echo Zulu and then ship back to her home state and Gulfstream Park for the Florida Sire Stakes. Trained by Bill Mott, Outfoxed turned the $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Susan’s Girl on Aug. 28 into a catch-me-if-you-can event. Her rivals couldn’t catch her and she galloped to victory by 13 ½ lengths while finishing the seven furlongs in 1:23.81. The victory made Outfoxed the first winner and first stakes winner for Florida freshman sire Valiant Minister, a Boama Corp. stallion who stands at Bridlewood Farm. On Sept. 25 in the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl, the scenario was much the same. This time, Outfoxed won by nine-and-aquarter lengths. The win brought her seasonal bankroll to $372,000. Consigned by Abbie Road Farm to the 2020 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s October yearling sale, Outfoxed was bought for $27,000 by Jesse Hoppel. She was then consigned by Coastal Equine to the 2021 OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale where bloodstock agents Alex Solis and Jason Litt signed the ticket for $360,000 on behalf of LNJ Foxwoods. Golden Pal added to his legacy as the Florida-bred golden boy. Named the 2020 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old colt, Golden Pal encored that by claiming three 2021 Florida-bred champion titles: GOLDEN PAL 3-year-old colt, male sprinter and 2019 bay colt by Uncle Mo – Lady Shipman, male turf horse. And if that wasn’t by Midshipman enough, he became the first FloriBreeder: Randall E. Lowe da-bred to win two Breeders’ Cup Owners: Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith & Westerberg championship races with the 2020 Trainer: Wesley A. Ward Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint 2021 Race Record/Earnings (G1) and 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf 4-3-0-0/$706,000 Sprint (G1). 2021 Black Type Stakes Record Bred by Randall E. Lowe, who 1st – Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) also raced him in 2020, Golden Pal 1st – Woodford presented by TVG (G2) 1st – Quick Call Stakes (G3) didn’t make his 2021 debut until July

15 in the Quick Call (G3) at five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf. Now racing for the partnership of Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, who bought the colt privately in the summer of 2021 from Ranlo Investments LLC, Golden Pal made quick work of the graded stakes. He romped to victory by three lengths and stopped the clock in 1:02.99. Trainer Wesley Ward then shipped his charge to England for the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe at York on Aug. 20 but he posted a surprisingly off-form seventh. Back home, Golden Pal quickly returned to his winning ways. On Oct. 9 in the Grade 2 Woodford presented by TVG at Keeneland, he defeated fellow Florida-bred Extravagant Kid by twoand-a-quarter lengths. The winning time for the five-and-a-half furlongs on the turf was 1:03.12. Then it was on to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) on Nov. 6. With Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle, Golden Pal broke to the lead and opened up on the field. He posted fractions of

:22.25 for the first quarter-mile and :43.91 for the half-mile before cruising across the finish line a length-and-a-quarter in front in :55.22 for the five furlongs, just .47 off the course record of :54.75 set by Fast Parade in 2006. The Turf Sprint victory brought Golden Pal’s seasonal bankroll to $706,000 while cracking the millionaire club with $1,299,056 in career earnings. Lowe bred and raced Lady Shipman, the dam of Golden Pal, who was second in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) and earned $902,387. Golden Pal, a 2018 colt by Uncle Mo, was foaled at Ryan Barbazon’s Ocala-based Barbazon Racing and Bloodstock. After receiving his yearling prepping at Barbazon’s operation, Golden Pal was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency to the 2019 Keeneland September sale. A RNA at $325,000, Lowe struck an after-the-sale deal with Coolmore, giving them 60 days to return the colt. When Coolmore did indeed return Golden Pal, Lowe sent him back to Barbazon to receive his early training.

2021 FLORIDA-BRED CHAMPION 3-YEAR-OLD FILLY Claimed in her first career start for $50,000, Livingmybestlife proved to be a prudent acquisition for Hronis Racing LLC. She would go on to become a graded stakes-placed, multiple-stakes winner and collect a Florida-bred championship title. By Ocala Stud stallion The Big Beast out of Wall Street Lady, by Speightstown, Livingmybestlife was bred by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. Unraced as a juvenile, Livingmybestlife made her career debut racing for the Lieblongs as a sophomore runner on April 8 at Oaklawn Park where she finished second and was claimed by trainer John W. Sadler for Hronis Racing LLC. Livingmybestlife immediately began paying back that investment. She broke her maiden on April 24 at Oaklawn Park and then followed that with a win in a $50,000 starter optional claiming race on June 18 at Santa Anita Park. Livingmybestlife tacked on a second in an $50,000 starter optional claiming race on Aug. 29 at Del Mar before moving up to stakes company. On Sept. 24 at Los Alamitos Race Course, Livingmybestlife earned her first black type victory in the $75,000 Lucky Spell. She posted a two-length win, finishing the six furlongs in 1:09.64. Back at Del Mar for the $100,000 Seashell Stakes on Nov. 3, Livingmybestlife continued to shine. She won by a length-and-ahalf while covering the mile in 1:36.53. Bred by Vicente Perez’s Farm III, Sound Machine is a 2017 bay mare by Into Mischief out of Ava Pie, by Distorted Humor. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, she was purchased for $500,00 by Mike Ryan as an agent. In five seasons of racing, Firenze Fire definitely burned up some racetracks on his way to winning 13 stakes races, including nine graded stakes, and banking a career bankroll of $2,730,350. In addition to his 2021 Florida-bred championship title, Firenze Fire was also named the 2017 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old colt. And the 2015 Poseidon’s Warrior colt closed out his career with another outstanding season in 2021. Ron Lombardi’s Mr. Amore Stable homebred kicked off the season on May 8 with a dominating three-and-a-quarter-length victory in the Runhappy (G3) at Belmont Park, stopping the clock in 1:09.76 for the six furlong dash. Next up was the True North (G2) on June 4 at Belmont Park—a race Firenze Fire won in 2020 and the 2021 edition proved to be an encore. Firenze Fire won by a length-and-a-half while covering the six-and-a-half furlongs in 1:15.52.

Firenze Fire would then notch three runner-up finishes in the John A. Nerud Stakes (G2), Forego Stakes (G1) and Vosburgh Stakes (G2). And in the Forego Stakes on Aug.28 at Saratoga, Firenze Fire made it a veryJust prior to the 2021 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar, Lombardi announced that he had sold Firenze Fire to Japan’s Arrow Stud. Firenze Fire closed out his stellar career with an eighth to Aloha West in the 2021 Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint, collecting $20,000 and boosting his seasonal earnings to $493,500. He also retired as the only Florida-bred and one of only two thoroughbreds—along with Channel Maker—with five career appearances in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. He was also seventh in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), fourth in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), fifth in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and third in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).

Shifty She, a turf specialist, captured the first black-type win of her career on May 15 in the $75,000 Powder Break at Gulfstream Park, prevailing by a neck, in a winning time of 1:34.62 for the mile on the turf. A little less than a month later in the $75,000 Ginger Punch at Gulfstream Park, the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee proved she was indeed the real deal, drawing away to win by a lengthand-a-half in 1:40.13 for the mile-and-a-sixteenth furlongs. A trip to Saratoga yielded a third to Regal Glory in the Fasig-Tipton De La Rose on Aug. 8. After finishing fourth in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3) on Sept. 11, Shifty She was shipped to Belmont Park for the Noble Damsel Stakes (G3) on Oct. 23 and she cruised to victory by a length-and-a-half in 1:33.24 for the mile turf test. The 2021 Joseph M. O’Farrell Memorial Award was presented to Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield, the original consignor of Florida-bred Grade 1-winner Medina Spirit. Bred by Gail Rice, Medina Spirit was consigned by Summerfield as an agent, to the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2019 Winter Mixed Sale. He sold for $1,000 to Christy Whitman. This is the third Joseph M. O’Farrell Memorial Award for Summerfield who also won in 2014 and 2016. The Joseph M. O’Farrell Memorial Award is presented annually by OBS to the original consignor of the year’s best Florida-bred racehorse offered at an OBS auction. The award is named after Joseph M. O’Farrell, who was part of the nine-man syndicate that founded Ocala Stud in 1956 and who was a pioneer in establishing public thoroughbred auctions in Florida.

The 2021 Needles Award was presented to Gail Rice, who bred Grade 1-winning millionaire Medina Spirit. Rice was also honored as the 2020 Needles Award winner. The Needles Award was established by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association to honor Florida breeders who own small thoroughbred operations and have made outstanding contributions to the Florida Thoroughbred industry. The award is named after Needles, the first Florida-bred national champion (1955 champion 2-year-old colt) and first Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby (1956).

At the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale, Mongolian Changa, in foal to Not This Time, was purchased for $1,050,000 by Katsumi Yoshida of Japan from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. She is by Brilliant Speed and is out of Bridled, by Florida-bred Kentucky Derby (G1)-winner Unbridled.

Graded stakes-winner Background won the Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) on Aug. 5 at Emerald Downs. Owned by Bob and Molly Rondeau in the name of their Giddyup Stables LLC and trained by Mike Puhich, Background was also second in the $100,000 Hanshin Cup at Arlington Park. FLORIDA-BRED HORSE OF THE YEAR Medina Spirit was named the 2021 Florida-bred Horse of the Year in a vote by the FTBOA board of directors after the Gail Rice-bred 3-year-old had an accomplished year that culminated with a second-place finish to Knicks Go in the Grade 1 $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 6. Medina Spirit also became the seventh Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), but has been subsequently disqualified by the Churchill Downs stewards after a post-race exam found traces of the therapeutic steroid Betamethasone in the horse’s system. Although betamethasone is legal for equine use in Kentucky, it is not permitted on race day according to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission rules. The stewards made the ruling nine months following the Derby on Feb. 21 and owner Amr Zedan, who races in the name of his Zedan Racing Stables, Inc., and Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert are appealing the ruling to the Franklin County Circuit Court in Kentucky. The Jockey Club continues to recognize Medina Spirit as the winner of the Kentucky Derby on the official Equibase chart until the legal proceedings have run their course. Regardless of the Derby outcome, Medina Spirit produced a championship caliber year winning four times in nine 2021 starts, with four seconds and a third, while banking $3,520,000 including his Kentucky Derby first-place check. He defeated older horses in the Grade 1, $301,500 Awesome Again on Oct. 2 at Santa Anita, winning by five lengths in his final race before the Breeders’ Cup. He also won the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita on Jan. 30 after starting the year with a second-place finish to Life is Good in the Grade 3 Sham on Jan. 2, also at Santa Anita. He would again finish second to Life is Good in the Grade 2 San Felipe on March 6 before prepping for the Run for the Roses with a second to Rock Your World in the Grade 1 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 3. Following the Derby, Medina Spirit was third in the Preakness (G1) won by Rombauer in his worst finish of the year before returning after a three-month break on Aug. 29 at Del Mar to romp in the $100,000 Shared Belief at a mile. He collasped and died after a workout on Dec. 6. A necropsy performed on Medina Spirit concluded that there were no illegal drugs or toxins detected and stated that the cause of death was “undetermined; sudden cardiorespiratory arrest/ cardiac failure suspected.” By Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed, Medina Spirit ranked second in earnings nationally to Knicks Go and was ridden throughout the year by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez. On a day when two odds-on and one even-money favorite in Florida Cup races had already gone down in defeat, Shifty She gleamed in the expectations of her 3-5 post time odds while dominating the $110,000 Pleasant Acres Distaff Turf. The Distaff Turf was one of six races on the Florida Cup card at Tampa Bay Downs that offered total purses of $660,000 including the $10,000 Florida Sire Stakes win bonus included in each purse that was presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. A winner of the Grade 3 Noble Damsel at Belmont Park in October with a second and third in Grade 3 Suwannee River and Grade 3 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf respectively since, Shifty She did not hesitate to assert her class and quickness in the mile-and-a-sixteenth Distaff Turf as she and jockey Edwin Gonzalez led the field of nine fillies and mares through quarter-mile splits of :23.84, :47.53 and 1:11.79. Gonzalez had Shifty She a length in front most of the way before she began to draw away from her rivals around the far turn and eventually finish with a four-length victory in 1:41.43. Our Flash Drive caught longshot Mona Stella at the wire to get second and it was another length-and-a-quarter back to Lovely Luvy in fourth. They were followed by Mia Martina, Chick’s Shadow, Onyx, Extravagant Rosie and Sip ‘n Dip. “She is a very nice [mare]. She always breaks running, and when she breaks, I let her do what she wants to be comfortable,” Gonzalez said. “I don’t want to be fighting her because I know wherever I put her, she is going to give me her best.” “She won wire-to-wire and was in front the whole way, so it was a nice performance,” Joseph said. “Before the owners sent her to us, she had an issue and they gave her the time off she needed. It was almost two years. She came to us a good filly. And since she’s been with us, we’ve just tried to do as good of a job as the previous trainer. She’s just class.” Shifty She paid $3.20 to win. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. for Chris Pallas and Harvey Rothenberg in the name of their Pedigree Partners LLC, Shifty She has now won seven of 13 career starts with a second and two thirds. With winner’s share of the Distaff Turf purse and the $10,000 Florida Sire Stakes win bonus for which she is eligible, she now has career earnings of $453,495. King Cab shot to the immediate lead from post six and was never threatened on his way to a swift victory in the $110,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Sophomore for 3-year-old Florida-breds at seven furlongs. The son of Ocala Stud stallion Noble Bird is also eligible for the Florida Sire Stakes program and thus earned the $10,000 win bonus presented by the FTBOA. Ridden by Emisael Jaramillo for trainer Edward Plesa Jr., King Cap broke on top and had a clear, two-length lead on Lightening Larry in second down the backstretch and finished the first two furlongs in a brisk :22.37. King Cap extended his advantage around the turn with little urging from Jaramillo and finished the half-mile while still racing quickly in :44.74. Lightening Larry continued to give chase in second but King Cab stretched his lead to four-and-a-half lengths under the wire with Lightening Larry second, a half-length faster than Cattin in third. Dean Delivers, the even-money favorite, was fourth followed by Morgan Point and Stormy Pattern. King Cab paid $9.60 to win as the third choice in the field of six and the final time was 1:22.25 on the fast track. “This horse is very, very fast,” Jaramillo said. “Six furlongs, seven, he’s very strong. When I got to the three-eighths mile pole, I knew it was over. He’s so easy to ride.” King Cab started the year with a dominant win against first level allowance horses as he won by seven-and-a-quarter lengths going seven furlongs. He was unable to manage two turns in his next start when sixth in a first level, $75,000 optional claiming going a mile-and-aneighth won by Skippylongstocking at Gulfstream on March 2 before shipping to Tampa Bay for the Florida Cup. “He’s an exceptionally talented horse who does things his way,” Plesa said. “We tried him a distance of ground last time just to see if we could kind of get him to rate a little bit. That didn’t work, so I’m not going to do anything to mess him up. I’m just going to let him do what he likes to do. “He didn’t switch leads down the lane, but it didn’t hinder him. In the mornings he does, but in the afternoons [he sometimes does not]. Two races ago he did switch leads, but very late. Does it make any difference? Not all horses switch leads. That’s the only critique I can say about him. But when he wins like that, it doesn’t make any difference.” Out of the Florida-bred mare Alotofappeal, by Trippi, King Cab has now won three of five career starts while earning $141,940 for owner David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa. He was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and Edward Weist and William J. Terrill. Veteran Pudding Gets First Stakes Victory in

Third against stakes-company in his last three starts, 7-year-old Pudding punched through the black type barrier Saturday with a resilient victory in the $100,000 NYRABets Sprint for 4-year-olds and older at six furlongs. With Javier Castellano aboard, Pudding was first into stride while breaking from the outside post seven. Shortly after the start, Pudding was quickly joined on the inside by longshot It’s My House and Real Talk on the rail as those three raced down the backstretch three abreast. After a quarter-mile in :22.62 Pudding put away the early challengers as last year’s Sprint-winner Tap It to Win came three wide to challenge on the outside. Those two separated from the rest as they raced for home but Pudding never relinquished the lead to finish a neck in front of Tap It to Win in second with Cajun Casanova another five-anda-half lengths back in third. Officiating, who was the 7-5 favorite, never got underway and finished fourth, followed by Real Talk and It’s My House. Pudding finished the six furlongs in 1:09.01, just .34 seconds off of the stakes record set by It’s Me Mom in the 2012 Sprint. Pudding paid $9.60 to win. It was the first career stakes win for Pudding, who now sports a career record of nine wins, seven seconds and eight thirds from 33 starts with earnings of $323,840. Owned by trainer Elizabeth Dobles in partnership with Imaginary Stables, Pudding is by Two Step Salsa out of Jozi’s Turn, by Johannesburg and was bred by JSL Thoroughbreds. “He’s a dream to train. He’s one of my favorites,” Dobles said. “I guess almost every horse I train turns out to be one of my favorites, but he is definitely one of my heart horses.” Prior to the Sprint, Pudding had been third to Miles Ahead in the $85,000 Claiming Crown Starter Stakes on Dec. 4, third to Gatsby in the $100,000 Sunshine Sprint on Jan. 15 and third to Bank on Shea in the $75,000 Pelican, all at Gulfstream Park. Pudding was a $10,000 purchase by Vladmir Kazakov at the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ Sales August Yearling Sale where he was consigned by Beth Bayer.

Drama Chorus Battles for Upset Win in

In the biggest upset among the six Florida Cup races, Drama Chorus fought off a stretch-long challenge from Max K.O. to win the $110,000 Grey Goose Turf Classic by a neck. The Turf Classic featured a field of nine older Florida-breds who went a mile-andan-eighth on the turf with $97,000 Point of Entry and $75,000 Sunshine Classic-winner Shamrocket the 3-5 favorite from the Todd Pletcher barn. But Drama Chorus took control from the start of the Turf Classic as the 5-year-old gelding by Big Drama out of Missmollybygolly, by Scat Daddy led the field of nine older horses through the first quarter-mile in :24.29 while leading by a length-and-a-half with Alonso Quinonez up. They stretched their margin to two-and-a-half lengths through a half-mile in :48.49 with Max K.O. on their heels as they went around the far turn while Shamrocket tried to rally from far back while five-wide. Drama Chorus continued to show the way into the stretch when Max K.O. and Daniel Centeno shifted to their outside as those two separated from the rest for their stretch-long altercation. Drama Chorus prevailed to win in 1:48.58 with Max K.O. second and nearly four lengths ahead of Lure Him In in third with Shamrocket fourth. They were followed by Freedom Matters, And Won, Chess’s Dream, Over the Channel and Fast Fire. “The way he ran last time [second to Chez Pierre in a one mile turf allowance at Tampa Bay Downs on March 9], I think he got beat by a very nice horse,” Quinonez said. “I was just hoping for a nice clean break, and when [Freedom Matters] didn’t break as well as I thought he might, the rest was history. The fractions were perfect and I had a lot of horse turning for home.” Drama Chorus paid $25 to win for his first stakes triumph and first victory since defeating multiple-conditioned, $16,000 optional claimers going a mile at Canterbury Park in September. A homebred for Peter D. Mattson, Drama Chorus is trained by Tim Padilla and won his fifth race in 21 career starts with five seconds and a third with earnings of $184,722 including the $10,000 Florida Sire Stakes win bonus in the Turf Classic.

Treasure King Runs Down Tapthespeedofsound to Win

Mathis Stable LLC’s Treasure King was pinched back at the start and had one horse beat as the field of seven 3-year-olds went past the grandstand for the first time in the $110,000 Equistaff Sophomore Turf, but jockey Javier Castellano had him in full flight at the end to win by three-quarters-of-a-length. Tapthespeedofsound sprinted clear from the start of the mile-and-one-sixteenth Sophomore Turf and led the field of seven 3-year-old Florida-breds by a length-and-a-half out of the turf chute and under the wire for the first time. Jockey Edwin Gonzalez kept Tapthespeedofsound on an uncontested lead through fractions of :23.25, :47.31 and 1:11.96 and remained unchallenged around the far turn. However, Castellano gave Treasure King his cue with five-sixteenths left to run and began to circle horses with a wide trip. Tapthespeedofsound still had a clear lead turning for home but Treasure King was in full stride on the outside and collared the front-runner inside the final sixteenth to win in a time of 1:36.48 on the firm turf. Tapthespeedofsound finished second, a length ahead of Merlin on the inside in third. C My Meister was fourth followed by Skipperini, Mr Rum Runner and Fast Payday. “I really like this horse,” Castellano said. “He’s by a Galileo (IRE) horse [Treasure Beach (GB)], so I thought he would like the turf. Everything he did, he did the right way. I had a lot of confidence to win the race.” Treasure King paid $4.40 to win. Treasure King is out of Wave of Glory, by Midshipman and earned the $10,000 Florida Sire Stakes win bonus in addition to the winner’s share of $60,000. He is now undefeated in two starts having won a $50,000 maiden optional claiming by a half-length going about a mile-and-a-sixteenth on Tapeta at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 25. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Treasure King now has earnings of $93,900 in two starts. He was bred by Patricia Generazio. He was a $75,000 purchase by agent Steven Young at the 2021 OBS June Sale where he was consigned by Hidden Brook.

Midnight Stroll Steals With Front-Running Victory in

Jockey Pablo Morales sent Midnight Stroll to the front right from the start of the $100,000 Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies and never looked back while winning by three-andthree-quarters lengths in an upset of an accomplished field of Florida-breds. A field of seven 3-year-old fillies who went seven furlongs included multiple stakes-winner and 4-5 favorite Outfoxed and Hot Peppers, the 8-5 second choice who had won her last three. Midnight Stroll broke fast from the outside post seven and got the jump on Hot Peppers, who broke a step slow after being fractious in the gate prior to the start. As they raced down the backstretch, Hot Peppers raced up to join Midnight Stroll on the outside but never got on even terms while keeping a length ahead of longshot Kaeko in third as Outfoxed was four lengths back in sixth. Approaching the half-mile marker, Midnight Stroll stepped away from Hot Peppers after clicking off the first quarter-mile in :23.47 and stretched her lead to two-and-a-half lengths past the five sixteenths pole. With a quarter-mile to run, Rapturous made a run at Midnight Stroll as Outfoxed tried to begin her run from far back and Hot Peppers and Kaeko gave in. But Midnight Stroll found another gear, leaving Rapturous alone in second and cruised to the finish in 1:23.12. Rapturous finished nearly nine lengths ahead of Outfoxed in third. Sweet Laura was fourth followed by Kaeko, Killargue’s Girl and Hot Peppers. Midnight Stroll paid $16.80 as the 7-1 third choice. Trained by John Terranova, Midnight Stroll had just won a maiden special weight going a mile-and-40-yards at Tampa Bay on Feb. 26 in her third career start after finishing seventh and sixth in her first two career races in her juvenile year. She has now earned $83,225 in her four races for the ownership team of Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable and Steven Schoenfeld. “We got her started [last summer] at Saratoga and it took a while to get her going,” Terranova said. “So we kind of regrouped and brought her down here and stretched her out [to a mile-and40-yards] to break her maiden. We had this race in mind even before then. She has shown a lot of quality and we really like her. “Pablo knows her well. He’s been breezing her in the mornings and I told him if she breaks well, go on with it.” Morales sees an excellent future for Midnight Stroll. “She does it so effortlessly. Every time I’ve been on her, since this meet started, she has shown so much class,” he said. “We loved her the day of her maiden win, but after that she got even better. She came in real sharp today and when the gate opened, she was gone. She is a very classy horse.” Midnight Stroll is by Not This Time out of Midnight Magic, by Midnight Lute and was bred by Dr. Carolin Von Rosenberg DVM. Weaning Foals with Less Stress BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

here are many ways to wean foals and some methods are less stressful than others. Least stressful are methods in which the foal makes gradual adjustment to being apart from his dam or other adult members of the herd. The most stressful methods include abrupt separation from the mare and other adults. There is no “best” way to wean, however, because many factors enter this equation, including age, health, and temperament of the individual foal (and dam) and your own situation—facilities, conditions and management time. There are some general tips, however, and these can often be tweaked to fit your own (or the foal’s) situation. Trauma of separation is emotional (for both mare and foal) as well as physical, especially for a very young or insecure foal. A 5 to 6-month-old foal is more independent, and able to handle weaning better than a 3-month-old foal. Some foals must be weaned early, however, due to drought/poor pasture and lack of good feed for the mare, or health of the mare (or she’s old or thin) or to keep a fast-growing foal from developing skeletal problems due to too much milk. If care is taken to make the transition as smooth as possible, it’s not so hard on the mare and foal. THE FLORIDA HORSE n APRIL/MAY 2022

Age at weaning is usually determined by what’s best for the mare and/or foal. If you have to wean a foal early, keep in mind that foals are most vulnerable to disease at 2 to 4 months of age when passive immunity from colostrum is waning and their own immune system is just starting to take over the job of producing antibodies. Thus it is crucial to minimize stress. Bill Tracy, longtime horseman who has worked at JEH Stallion Station in New Mexico and Oak Tree Ranch in Bandera, Texas, is presently the farm manager at Mike Grossman’s Eureka Thoroughbred Farm in Fredericksburg, Texas. He has dealt with many mares and foals over the years and says that for his program weaning starts when foals are born—getting them prepared for what will happen to them later in life. “You can’t just run them out in big pastures while they’re growing up and then expect them to be manageable at weaning time,” he says. “We imprint every foal that’s born and handle them right away. We put a little halter on and lead them with a come-along rope. Whenever we take the mare out of the stall to turn her out, the foal is led to the paddock with her, and when we go to get them we put the halter back on the foal and lead them back in. The foals learn to lead quickly, and it’s not difficult—not even the first time—because they are not bigger and stronger than we are,” he says. “We just gently get them into a corner and put the little halter on, and the little butt rope. Our come-along rope is a little different than most people use because we don’t have a snap on the end of it. We put the rope through the halter and the other end goes around behind the foal’s rump, and you can hold both ends in your hand. Then if they do get loose, the rope just falls off and doesn’t scare them,” says Tracy. “If it’s snapped on the halter and goes dragging along with them, bumping their legs, it becomes a very scary deal and they tend to run and crash into things. With the rope not attached, if a baby throws himself down, all you have to do is open your hand and the middle of the rope stays in your hand and the ends come right off,” he says. There’s nothing dragging behind the foal. “We handle the foals, pick up their feet and do all the basic things in the first couple weeks. Most of our mares are bred again on foal heat or the next heat. We have them up and handy so we are catching the babies and bringing mamas and babies back in, especially during

the first 15 days of life. After the mare is bred they might get turned out for a while, but we keep doing a little something with them,” explains Tracy. He likes to turn mares and foals out on pasture in groups of 6 or 8, always an even number. “When it comes time for weaning, we bring two mares out of that group. We take them to the other end of the ranch, leaving the foals there in the pasture with their buddies. The foals are upset for only a short time. They might run up and down the fence once or twice, wondering where mom is, but the other foals aren’t worried so the two frantic ones decide to go back to playing with their buddies,” he says. “The foal says, ‘where’s mom?’ and his buddies answer and say ‘we don’t know, but we’re over here playing’. So the lone foal doesn’t want to be a complete dope and goes with them. Peer influence carries as much weight with horses as with humans. They are not upset for more than a few minutes and it’s not a big deal,” he explains. The mares are given a small dose of tranquilizer (whatever the vet recommends) when taken out of the pasture, before they are loaded in the trailer to haul them away, so they are not screaming. “We get the mares out of earshot, turned out in a pasture at the far end of the ranch. They are moving around at pasture, getting some exercise, so they are not standing around building up a lot of swelling in their udder. We just watch the mares to be sure that none of them get mastitis. We don’t ever milk the mares. That just prolongs the dry up process,” he says. The weaning is always done in pairs. Two mares will buddy up with one another and not be so stressed at losing their babies. The foals are still with their familiar group; they are happy in their pasture with their buddies and about a week later two more mares are removed. By that time the first two are weaned and content and the second two are hanging around with their pals. “We do that 3 or 4 more times and we have them all weaned,” says Tracy. The oldest ones in the group are generally weaned first, and the youngest ones left until last, so they are a little older by the time their turn comes. “But the way we set it up, all the foals in a group are fairly close in age, to be a compatible group.” The first ones weaned are soon very independent. “When we wean the next ones they say, ‘come with us; Continued on next page THE FLORIDA HORSE n APRIL/MAY 2022

Equine Care don’t worry about your mom.’ Before long, it’s just a pasture full of babies. The last two might holler a little, but they go with their friends. The foals generally don’t nicker more than a few minutes when we take the mare away. Sometimes the mares carry on more than the foals, but most of them are about ready to wean their babies and don’t fuss a lot,” he says. All the foals on the ranch have neck straps for identification. “After they are all weaned, we work with them periodically, in a little catch pen in the corner of the pasture. Every few days we get them all in there and give them attention and rubbing, being nice to them without doing any foot trimming, shots, etc. for those first weeks. We just hang out with them. If you need to catch one for some reason, and you’ve taught them to come into that catch pen, you can easily catch them. Since they are already halter broke, it’s no big deal when you put a halter on them,” he says. “Basically weaning is a no-stress deal. There are many other ways to wean foals, especially when people have just a small place, but this is a system that works for us, and we have a lot of foals.” Most foals aren’t weaned until they are about 6 months old, but sometimes things happen and you have to do it quicker. “One year I had a foal that was 4 ½ months old and his mother colicked and died. He got weaned at that age, but did fine. He was used to being handled. I didn’t have a group that he was with, so I just selected another mare and foal to put in a stall next to him. She was a kind, friendly mare with a foal about his age. He bonded with them and we put them in paddocks where they were close to one another, to socialize through the fence,” says Tracy. “Then after a few days we just put them together and they went back to a group of mares and foals. When it came weaning time we weaned those two foals in the pasture like we did the others. The orphan foal had a friend to hang out with. Fortunately he was old enough and eating enough by the time he lost his mother that there was no problem,” Tracy says. You want the foals eating well and doing well, and already dewormed by the time you wean. It goes smoothly if they are healthy. “You don’t want to stress one that might have a health problem. In that case you should wait until later to wean him. A foal with a problem will usually be in the barn anyway--where you can get hands on. You are almost weaning him every day because he is adjusting to human handling and won’t miss mom so much when the time comes for weaning,” he explains. There are some common sense guidelines for weaning, and the main thing is to avoid stress. If 50

weather is stormy or horribly hot when you’d planned to wean, it’s best to postpone until better weather. “Good sense and good horsemanship are the main things,” says Tracy. “We start weaning foals at 5 to 6 months. One summer we postponed some of the weaning, however, because we had more than 3 weeks in a row where the temperature was over 100 degrees. Weaning during the heat is too much stress. It doesn’t hurt the mare to keep nursing her foal for another week or two, waiting until cooler weather.” FENCELINE WEANING - Some horsemen do fenceline weaning, with mares and foals in separate but adjacent pens. This type of weaning was inspired by a study several decades ago at Texas A&M, which showed that foals with fenceline contact with their dams during the first week of weaning had fewer signs of stress (less whinnying, pacing, running, and lower cortisol levels in their blood) than foals abruptly/completely separated from their mothers. Most mares and foals accept fenceline weaning with very little protest and after 5 to 9 days can be completely separated with no additional stress. Data from that study showed that physical separation with continued visual, smell and hearing contact—but no nursing—was less stressful than sudden separation. A foal at 5 to 6 months of age doesn’t need milk anymore, but is still emotionally dependent on his dam. To suddenly take her away usually leaves him insecure and frantic. Horses are herd animals, happiest with other horses. Foals with an adult companion are least stressed during weaning. TFH

2022 Legislative Session Report

s is said regarding baseball, some games are played during the day, some are played at night and some games are rained out. The 2022 Legislative Session featured many issues that raised emotions to an elevated level among the legislative membership and the public. However, the session was a rain out when it comes to pari-mutuel or gaming related issues. After dealing with the Compact, decoupling, and a host of complicated pari-mutuel and gaming issues during the 2021 Regular and Special Sessions, the Legislature had little interest in fighting those battles again in 2022. Legislative leaders instead decided to focus on the priorities of Governor DeSantis, redistricting, and developing a historically large state budget. Redistricting is always a complicated issue but remarkably the redrawn maps evoked very little pushback from persons outside of the process and instead embroiled the Governor in a vocal disagreement with the House and Senate over the Congressional maps which he says he will veto. Producing a budget with unlimited resources is a much more difficult and time-consuming task than when times are tough and a simple 3% reduction across all government budgets can be implemented. Despite those challenges, the Legislature adjourned Sine Die less than one business day after the scheduled close on Monday, March 14. One gaming bill of substance did however make it through the legislative process. SB 2510, a budget bill related to the Florida Gaming Commission, conformed statutes to the budget in the following manner: • Deleted a requirement that each member of the Commission be appointed from each of the five appellate court districts due to a Supreme Court decision to create a new Sixth Appellate District. • Allowed a person who has lobbied for a state agency to be appointed as a commissioner or to be employed as a commission employee. • Moved the hearing and notice exemption in Chapter 120, F. S., for pari-mutuel stewards, judges, and boards of judges from

the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering to the Commission. • Deleted the Pari-Mutuel Wagering Trust Fund from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and authorizes the Commission to administer the fund. • Provided that the daily license fees for pari-mutuel wagering are to be used to fund the operating cost of the Commissioner instead of the Division. • Provided that slot machine fees shall be used to fund the operating expenses of the Commission instead of the Division. • Deleted the transfer of funds from the Pari-mutuel Trust Fund to the General Revenue Fund. • Required the Commission to evaluate the license fee for slot machine regulatory requirements and make recommendations to the Speaker and the President on the amount of such fees by January 1, 2026. • Provided that the game promotion statute does not apply to actions regulated by the Commission. • Takes effect July 1, 2022. It is likely that Congressional redistricting maps will be vetoed by the Governor and a special session may follow soon after but we do not expect pari-mutuel or gaming issues to be considered if there is one.. We can now turn an eye toward the 2023 Regular Session. That session will open in March and close in May. We expect there to be a full slate of pari-mutuel and gaming issues on the table. There will likely be renewed attempts at statewide sports betting, efforts to increase purses and awards for thoroughbred racing, attempts to re-allocate distribution of revenue from advanced deposit wagering companies, and many more thorny issues debated. Please rest assured that the FTBOA leadership will work hard over the interim period between sessions to improve conditions for thoroughbred breeders, owners, trainers and even tracks during the 2023 session. Grey Goose Turf Classic-winner Drama Chorus provided a lesson to all with his win at 11-1 odds; suggesting it may be a miscalculation to overlook him in future contests. His 94 Beyer in the Turf Classic does not appear to be an aberration given he produced a 95 Beyer in his previous start when second to Chez Pierre (Fr) in a $75,000 optional claiming at Tampa Bay Downs going a mile on the turf on March 9. His victory in the Turf Classic also equated to a =11 Ragozin and a 113 TimeFormUS Rating. He also defeated a group of accomplished turf foes in the Turf Classic in 3-5 favorite and multiple graded stakes-placed, stakes-winner Shamrocket, stakes-winner Lure Him In and multiple stakesplaced Max K.O. Trained by Tim Padilla, the son of Big Drama also earned his first stakes victory in the Turf Classic with the big effort. The other two winners on the day were Treasure King, who won the $110,000 Equistaff Sophomore Turf by three-quarters of a length at 6-5; and Midnight Stroll, who dominated the $100,000 Stonehedge Farm South Sophomore Fillies with an upset win by three-and-aquarter lengths. in two starts with the Sophomore Turf win, lodged an 85 Beyer in his second career start and produced an equally impressive =10+ Ragozin Sheets figure. Winning Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano indicated that he thinks Treasure King has better days ahead. “I really like this horse,” Castellano said. “He’s by [Treasure Beach (GB)], so I thought he would like the turf. Everything he did, he did the right way.” Midnight Stroll led from start to finish and was never threatened in the Sophomore Fillies, winning by three-and-a-quarter lengths while producing an 82 Beyer in her second start. But like Treasure King, her 10+ Ragozin number indicated more promise as she won her first stakes victory off of a two-and-a-half-length victory against special weight maidens just prior to the Florida Cup. There is no sure-fire way of knowing who will emerge from the 2022 Florida Cup and become a more accomplished star who will be a threat in the sport’s highest echelons. We will not know if Treasure King is another Soldier’s Dancer or if King Cab will win multiple Grade 1 races at Saratoga like Imperial Hint. But we do know, based on the figures, it was another notable day of stakes produced by Florida-breds in the Florida Cup. Gala Wrap-Up As we go to press, the FTBOA Horse of the Year Gala will once again be held in-person in Ocala on April 25.
