Die Piloten und Flight Attendants präsentieren sich in neuen Uniformen, welche sich modern, trendig geschnitten und mit frischen Farbtupfern präsentieren. Beinahe 10’000 Knöpfe und 1’700 Meter Stoff wurden für die neuen Uniformen von SkyWork Airlines verarbeitet. Als besonderes Accessoire tragen die Frauen wie auch die Männer grüne Krawatten. Die SkyWork-Krawattennadel und eine schwarze Lederhandtasche sorgen zusätzlich für den Glamourfaktor. Bei der Entwicklung der Uniform wurden die Mitarbeitenden von SkyWork Airlines von Anfang an miteinbezogen. Wenn sich die Mitarbeitenden wohlfühlen, können die Zufriedenheit und der persönliche Service auch auf die Fluggäste übertragen werden.

Listening attentively and responding quickly are an everyday routine for Lars Briseid. The customer service of skyWork airlines deals with questions and requests of all kinds.

Ein Geschäftsmann erkundigt sich nach seiner verlorengegangenen Brille. Nach einigen Telefonaten ist klar – die Brille wurde bisher nicht gefunden. Eine ältere Dame fragt leicht ungeduldig nach Möglichkeiten für eine Umbuchung. Hier können Lars und seine charmante Teamkollegin eine schnelle Lösung finden. Auch die Frage eines weiteren Fluggastes über Transfermöglichkeiten nach Bern kann präzise beantwortet werden. «Im Moment ist es eher ruhig», sagt Lars zu den eben erteilten Auskünften. «Eine besonders herausfordernde Aufgabe stellt sich uns vom Kundendienst wenn Flüge zum Beispiel wetterbedingt ausfallen. Dann müssen für unsere Fluggäste individuelle Lösungen gesucht und gefunden werden – innerhalb kürzester Zeit!» Gegen Nebel auf der Piste ist auch der Kundendienst nicht gefeit. Lars Briseids Background ist die Touristikbranche. Der Umgang mit Menschen macht ihm sichtlich Spass. Sein ruhiges Agieren in hektischen Situationen wirkt positiv auf gestresste Menschen. Sonderwünsche versucht Lars – wenn immer möglich – zu erfüllen. Eine besonders individuelle Betreuung dürfen Menschen mit einer Behinderung oder Kinder

A businessman asks about a lost pair of glasses; a few calls reveal that they haven’t turned up yet. An elderly woman inquires somewhat impatiently about rebooking her flight. In this case, Lars and his charming colleague manage to quickly come up with a solution. They are also able to give precise information to another passenger who wants to know how to get to Bern. «Right now, it’s actually relatively quiet», comments Lars. «The challenges are much greater when, for example, a flight is cancelled because of bad weather. Then we have to find individual solutions for our passengers – and do it fast!» Not even the customer service, it appears, can make fog on the runway go away. Lars Briseid’s background is in the tourist industry. He obviously enjoys dealing with people. His calm demeanour in hectic situations has a soothing effect on stressed travellers. And whenever possible, he tries to fulfil special wishes. Disabled individuals and passengers with children can expect personalised assistance during both check-in and the flight. Other jobs also have to be taken care of, such as organising extra meals at the last minute. These days, however, check-in generally goes very smoothly. «Occasionally we have to search for missing

erwarten, sowohl beim Check-In, als auch auf der nachfolgenden Reise. Auch andere Aufgaben gehören dazu, so müssen zum Beispiel auch schon mal zusätzliche Mahlzeiten organisiert werden. Heute verläuft das Einchecken der Fluggäste jedoch reibungslos. «Manchmal müssen wir nach fehlenden Passagieren suchen», sagt Lars Briseid dazu. «Nicht selten finden wir die «Vermissten» im Dutyfree-Shop oder beim Zigarettenrauchen!» Heute läuft alles reibungslos. Das Zeitfenster (Slot) für den Abflug kann eingehalten werden. Lars verabschiedet sich von der Flugzeugbesatzung und hilft ihr von aussen, die Türe der Maschine zu schliessen. Das KundendienstTeam ist zufrieden. Denn, ein Flug mit SkyWork Airlines soll für jeden Fluggast ein rundum erfreuliches Erlebnis sein. Nun geht’s zurück ins Flughafengebäude, auch der administrative Teil will erledigt sein. Lars Briseid ist froh um seine Erfahrungen aus dem Reisegeschäft und kann diese nun optimal einsetzen. Jetzt werden schriftliche und telefonische Fragen und Anliegen von Kunden und Reisebüros beantwortet, oder, wenn nötig, weitergeleitet. Bald müssen schon wieder die nächsten Abflüge vorbereitet werden. Und bereits steht auch ein eben eingetroffener Fluggast an der Theke des Kundendienstes: Die freundliche und kompetente Auskunft von Lars scheint den Kunden zu freuen. «Unser Leitsatz ist zugleich unsere Motivation», meint Lars Briseid: «Your personal way to fly»! The flight is able to depart within the assigned time slot. Lars says good-bye to the crew and helps them close the aircraft door from the outside. The customer service team is satisfied. Because flying with SkyWork Airlines should always be an all-round positive experience for each passenger. Now Lars heads back to the terminal building because there are still administrative chores to finish up. He is glad of his experience in the travel business, which he can now put to good use. He replies to questions received from customers and travel agencies in writing and by telephone, or relays them to other staff if necessary. There isn’t much time – preparations for the next departure will begin soon. And a newly-arrived passenger is already standing at the customer service counter. The customer seems happy with Lars` friendly and competent advice. «Our slogan is also our motivation», he says. «Your personal way to fly!» Henry Oehrli

The 30th summer Olympic games will open in the new Olympic stadium in London on 27 July 2012. This will be the third time that the Brits will be hosting the «youth of the world».

Neun Grossstädte aus aller Welt bewarben sich für die Sommerspiele 2012. Für Havanna, Leipzig, Istanbul und Rio de Janeiro war es bereits in der Vorausscheidung vorbei. Das Olympische Komitee akzeptierte letztlich die Kandidaturen der Bewerberstädte Madrid, Moskau, New York, Paris und London.

Nine large cities around the world submitted bids to host the 2012 Summer Olympics. Havana, Leipzig, Istanbul and Rio de Janeiro were eliminated in the preliminary round. The International Olympic Committee finally accepted the candidacies of Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris and London.

Die Entscheidung über den endgültigen Austragungsort fiel am 6. Juli 2005 beim IOC-Kongress in Singapur: Im letzten Wahlgang standen sich Paris und London gegenüber. Grossbritanniens Hauptstadt erhielt schliesslich mit 54 gegen 50 Stimmen den Zuschlag für den grössten Sportanlass der Welt.

The final selection was announced at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore on 6 July 2005. Towards the end, it had been a neck-and-neck race between Paris and London. Nevertheless, the capital of the United Kingdom finally won out with 54 votes against 50 and was thus chosen to stage the world’s largest sporting event.

london ruft – die Welt kommt Die Veranstalter erwarten mehr als 10’000 Sportler aus über 200 Ländern. Zusammen mit den Trainern, Betreuern und Offiziellen werden zirka 17’000 Frauen und Männer als Vertreter ihrer Verbände in London zugegen sein – eine logistische Herausforderung sondergleichen! Zusätzlich erwartet man 30’000 Journalisten aus aller Welt, die vor Ort von den Spielen berichten werden. Die Spiele dauern 17 Tage, wobei ein paar Veranstaltungen aus Zeitgründen schon zwei Tage vor der offiziellen Eröffnung stattfinden werden. Für die Zuschauer stehen 6,6 Millionen Tickets zum Verkauf. Insgesamt wird in 302 Wettbewerben um Medaillen gekämpft. 162 Goldmedaillen werden an männliche Athleten vergeben, 132 an Frauen, und in acht gemischten Wettbewerben streben Frau und Mann gemeinsam nach Gold. neubauten und nachhaltigkeit London verfügt bereits über eine breite Palette an Sportstätten. Trotzdem entstehen – zum Teil temporär – neue Stadien und Austragungsorte. Im Mittelpunkt steht das neue Olympiastadion, welches nach den Spielen um 20’000 auf 60’000 Plätze «schrumpfen» und zugleich das neue Stadion für den Premier-League-Club West Ham United werden wird. Dasselbe gilt für das neu entstandene Olympische Dorf, gebaut im ehemals etwas schmuddeligen Londoner East End: Dieses soll nach Abschluss der Spiele zu einem Wohnkomplex mit 3000 Einheiten umgebaut werden. Die Wettkampfanlagen sind drei verschiedenen Zonen innerhalb von Greater London zugeordnet: die Olympic Zone, die River Zone und die Central Zone. Darüber hinaus gibt es für Disziplinen in freier Natur auch Wettkampfanlagen ausserhalb Londons, wie zum Beispiel für das Segeln oder Mountainbike.

Im Februar letzten Jahres konnte im Londoner Olympiapark als erste Sportstätte das Velodrome fertiggestellt werden. Der Olympiapark entstand auf einer 200 Hektaren grossen Industrie- und Güterbahnhofbrache im Stadtteil Stratford. Er enthält neben dem Olympiastadion (Eröffnungs- und Schlussfeier, Leichtathletik) unter anderem das Schwimmzentrum, die Hallen für Basket- und Handball und das Fechten sowie das Medienzentrum. Temporär werden zum Beispiel der Hyde Park (Triathlon), die Horse Guards Parade (Beachvolley) oder die Royal Artillery Barracks (Sportschiessen) für die Sommerspiele hergerichtet. Und für die Schweizer besonders interessant: Das Tennisturnier findet auf dem ehrwürdigen Rasen Wimbledons statt – hier wo der erfolgreichste Schweizer Sportler, Roger Federer, so grosse Erfolge feiern konnte. The Olympic venues are assigned to three different zones within Greater London: the Olympic Zone, the River Zone and the Central Zone. There are also venues outside London for certain outdoor disciplines such as sailing and mountain biking. In February 2011, the first new facility to be completed was the Velodrome in London’s Olympic Park, which is being constructed on 200 hectares of land previously occupied by factories and a freight train station in the borough of Stratford. Besides the Olympic Stadium (to be used for the opening and closing ceremonies and for track and field competitions), the Olympic Park will contain the aquatics centre, the arenas for basketball, handball and fencing, and the media centre, among other facilities. The temporary venues being set up for the 2012 Summer Olympics include, for example, Hyde Park (triathlon), the Horse Guards Parade (beach volleyball) and the Royal Artillery Barracks (shooting). Von dort bietet sich dem Besucher in westlicher Richtung ein prächtiger Blick über die bunten Dächer der Altstadt. Die Sonne zeigt sich ein letztes Mal in dunkelorangenem Gewand, ehe sie ganz am Horizont versinkt und einen Tag später ihr wohltuendes Licht erneut an die Menschen auf der Promenade verschwendet. When people talk about Cologne, they are usually thinking of Kölsch beer and carnival. Or the cathedral, which so unmistakably marks the cityscape. Yet the metropolis on the lower course of the River Rhine has much more than that to offer.

Natürlich: Wer nach Köln reist, muss die traditionelle Brauhauskultur erleben – am besten in der Kölner Altstadt. Nur wenige Schritte vom Dom entfernt, erstreckt sich die Rheinpromenade mit den typischen bunten Giebelhäusern. In den zahlreichen Kneipen und Brauhäusern wird das kühle Kölsch serviert; ein obergäriges Bier, das nur in Köln gebraut werden darf.

Of course, if you visit Cologne you simply must experience the traditional brewery and pub culture – preferably in the Old City. The ‘Rhine Promenade’ along the river with its typical, colourful gabled houses is just a few steps from the cathedral, and there are also numerous pubs and breweries that serve chilled Kölsch, a top-fermented beer that may only be brewed in Cologne.

What a difference from the beer culture of southern Germany and Bavaria! Down south, a «Mass» or litre-sized mug is standard; in Cologne, the «Köbes» (waiter) brings the beer in small glasses inserted in holes on a board called a «Stange». Although the Munich cabaret artist Michael Mittermaier loves to poke fun at the «test tubes» containing only two-tenths of a litre of beer, three shots of tasty Kölsch actually add up to the equivalent of a Mass (which is typically only filled halfway).

For this reason, Cologne is one of Europe’s principal pilgrimage destinations. In addition to the cathedral, the city also has 12 large Romanesque churches, contributing to its fame as «Sacred Cologne». multifaceted and vibrant The city on the River Rhine has a lively cultural scene and hosts international trade fairs, congresses and numerous large events. It has a huge number of museums and galleries that devote a wide variety of exhibitions to the city’s past and present. Cologne’s 2000-year history is in evidence everywhere, such as at the famous tomb of Poblicius or, representing the modern age, the largest collection of pop art outside the United States in the Ludwig Museum. Seit einem Beschluss des Landtags vom letzten Oktober dürfen Gemeinden und Städte Nordrhein-Westfalens auf den Ortstafeln ihren Werbeslogan platzieren. Köln hat (vorerst) darauf verzichtet. The town of Murten (Morat in French) is located on a gentle hill and straddles the boundary between the German- and French-speaking parts of Switzerland. It enchants visitors with its French charm, and people of all ages love to stroll through its lovely Old Town or walk along the lakeshore. From the nearby Mont Vully hills, you will have a marvellous view of lush vineyards that provide the grapes for the local wine and a landscape that extends far beyond it. Here and there you’ll also encounter signs of the past, including an ancient Celtic fortification called the «Oppidum Vully» and a system of caves and bunkers left over from the First World War.

Seit zehn Jahren wird auf dem Berner Hausberg Freilichttheater gespielt. 2012 wird dieses Jubiläum gefeiert: Nach Dürrenmatt, Dällebach, Steinbeck und Einstein spielt das Theater Gurten in diesem Sommer «Holzers Peepshow». Regisseurin Livia Anne Richard hat das heitere Stück von Markus Köbeli («Total Birgit», «Giaccobo/Müller») für den Gurten adaptiert. Die Holzers sind eine Bauernfamilie, der nichts mehr so richtig gelingen will. Sie beschliessen, in die Tourismusbranche zu expandieren. Gegen Geld wollen sie Fremden zeigen, wie Bauern in der Schweiz wirklich leben. So spielen sie heile Welt, die bald aus den Fugen gerät. «Holzers Peepshow» ist eine wunderbare Komödie, die so viel gespielte Swissness zeigt, dass das Rad der Zeit höchstens als Illusion zurückgedreht werden kann.

For ten years now, open-air theatre has been performed on the Gurten, a mountain just to the south of Bern, and this anniversary is being celebrated in 2012. After performing plays by Dürrenmatt, Dällebach, Steinbeck and Einstein, Gurten Theatre will be presenting, «Holzers’ Peepshow» this summer. Director Livia Anne Richard has adapted this humorous play by Markus Köbeli (whose other works include ‘Total Birgit’ and «Giaccobo/ Müller») for the Gurten. The Holzers are a farming family that just can’t seem to get anything right, so they decide to enter the tourist business. Their idea is to charge money to show tourists how farmers really live in Switzerland. They act out an ideal world until everything starts to fall apart. «Holzers’ Peepshow» is a wonderful comedy so full of feigned Swissness that it becomes very clear that the wheel of time can only be rolled backwards in the form of an illusion.

What a contrast we find here! Danny builds his flipped-out motorbikes in Bümpliz, a tranquil suburb in the west of Bern full of staid, middle-class homes. Chopper fans of the world are electrified and the foreign press queues up to interview him. It’s Danny on a front cover here, Hardnine in detailed stories there. The real stuff!

Der 37-jährige Bümplizer hielt es schon immer mit Zweirädern. Als BMX-, Motocross- und Freestylepilot waren Wettbewerbe sein Element. Durch einen schweren Unfall wurde seine Sport- und Showkarriere leider schon früh beendet. Den Motorrädern blieb er aber treu: Bikes aus den 1940er- und 50er-Jahren zum Chopper zu veredeln, das war Dannys Vision. Seinem ersten Projekt stand eine Harley Davidson von 1948 Pate; heute sind alte Töffs dieses Labels unbezahlbar. Dannys aktuelle Projekte tragen nun andere klingende Namen – so aktuell der britische «Triumph».

Schneider, 37, has always been fascinated by two-wheelers. For years he lived to race everything – BMX, motocross, freestyle. Unfortunately, a serious accident put an early end to his sporting and show career, but he remained faithful to what he loved. Danny’s vision was to turn motorbikes from the 1940s and 50s into choppers. His first project was a 1948 Harley Davidson; today, vintage bikes of that company are wildly expensive. Now his projects bear other resounding names such as his current one, the British «Triumph».

Dannys Chopper sind Unikate. Kein Mainstream, wie von vielen anderen gebaut. Und auch Danny ist nicht Mainstream – der junge Mann lässt sich in kein Schema pressen. Ein zuverlässiger, wohlerzogener Schweizer, der seinen Traum ganz unschweizerisch leidenschaftlich lebt. Keine Lederkluft, kein Fat Boy, aber Bike-Leidenschaft pur!

Each one of Danny’s choppers is unique. He doesn’t build mainstream bikes like many others do. Danny himself isn’t mainstream, either – it’s impossible to stick the young man into a category. He’s a reliable, well-brought-up Swiss guy who is passionately living his dream in an exceedingly un-Swiss manner. No leather, no fat boy – just pure passion for bikes!

Catania, die vom Ätna geprägte Stadt auf Sizilien: Der mit über 3300 Meter höchste und aktivste Vulkan Europas ist in dieser Hafenstadt allgegenwärtig. Er thront über der Stadt und beeinflusst das Leben der «Catanesi» seit eh und je. Selbst der Name Catania hat mit dem in italienischer Sprache «Etna» genannten Feuerberg zu tun: Er stammt vom sizilianischen Wort «Katane» (Raspel) ab – ein Hinweis auf die Oberfläche des rauen Lavagesteins. Die barocke Stadt ist gespickt mit architektonischen Sehenswürdigkeiten, von Kirchen über Palazzi bis hin zum römischen Amphitheater. In der Mitte der Stadt, der Piazza del Duomo, ist der Elefantenbrunnen sehenswert; er ist das Wahrzeichen Catanias und Treffpunkt der Jugend. Wer schon in Sizilien war, schwärmt von der dortigen Küche; Arancini (Reisbällchen) als Vorspeise und zum Beispiel Farsu magru (Rollbraten) als Hauptspeise. Dazu bietet sich eine Inselrundfahrt geradezu an – mit Zwischenstopps an den lauschigsten und schönsten Plätzen! Wie heisst es doch – etwas abgewandelt – so treffend: Sizilien sehen und sterben. Letzteres verschiebt man vorzugsweise auf später! Mit den neuen Destinationen Split und Rijeka liegt den SkyWork Airlines Passagieren Kroatien zu Füssen. Split, die zweitgrösste Stadt Kroatiens hat viel zu bieten; die Altstadt der an der Adria gelegenen Hafenstadt ist gemütlich und äusserst sehenswert. Ein Ausflug auf den vorgelagerten Berg Marjan, der über ein schön gebautes Treppensystem führt, ermöglicht einen eindrücklichen Blick auf die Stadt und die vorgelagerten Inseln.

Catania is the Sicilian city closest to Mount Etna. This volcano, which is Europe’s most active and also its tallest with an elevation of over 3,300 metres, looms omnipresent over this lively port city. It has influenced the lives of the ‘Catanesi’ since time immemorial. Even the name Catania is related to the fiery mountain known as «Etna» in Italian. It is derived from the Sicilian word «katane», whose meaning includes «harsh lands, uneven ground» – a reference to the rough surface of the lava fields. The Baroque city is dotted with architectural jewels, from churches and palazzi to Roman amphitheatres. At the city’s centre, the Piazza del Duomo features a fountain containing an elephant sculpted from lava that is Catania’s hallmark and a favourite meeting place for local young people. Everyone who goes to Sicily loves to rave about its cuisine, which includes things such as arancini (rice balls) as a starter and farsu magru (rolled roast veal) as the main dish. It’s also a great idea to tour all around the island, making stops at the prettiest and most idyllic spots. As the saying goes (although slightly adapted): Come and see Sicily and then you can die. But preferably not until much later! Thanks to the new services to Split and Rijeka, Croatia is now wide open to SkyWork Airlines’ passengers. Split, the country’s second-largest city, has plenty to offer. The old part of this port city on the Adriatic Sea is well worth a visit, with a soothing ambience that makes you want to put down roots. The nearby Marjan Hill is also perfect for an outing; you can climb the stairway to its top to savour an impressive view of the city and the islands off the coast.

Motoren dieser Bauart sind Düsentriebwerken nicht unähnlich. Die eintretende Luft wird mittels Kompressor verdichtet und in einer Brennkammer mit Treibstoff zur Zündung gebracht. Der Unterschied: Ein Düsentriebwerk enthält oft mehrere Brennkammern, und das so immer höher beschleunigte Gas-Luftgemisch erzeugt am Triebwerkausgang (Düse) den Vortrieb (Schub). Bei Turboprop-Motoren strömen die beschleunigten Gase auf eine Welle, die über ein Getriebe den Propeller antreibt. Die Vorteile dieser Bauart sind vielfältig: leichter, sparsamer – und deutlich leiser. fluglärm «sehen» Heutige Passagierflugzeuge sind, verglichen mit denjenigen der 1950er-Jahre, um bis zu 30 Dezibel leiser. Zehn Dezibel weniger bedeuten halb so viel Lärm. Auch die Internationale Zivilluftfahrt-Organisation (ICAO) bestätigte 2007 in einem Umweltbericht zum Flugverkehr: Moderne Flugzeuge sind etwa um drei Viertel weniger laut als vor vierzig Jahren. Zusätzlich steigen moderne Flugzeuge viel schneller auf grosse Höhe. Besucher am Flughafen Bern können das einfach überprüfen: Bereits bei Pistenmitte heben die Turboprops ab und steigen beeindruckend schnell in den blauen Himmel hinein – mit einem leisen Rauschen nur, wie bei diesen Flugzeugmodellen typisch. Wer heute «Fluglärm» sagt, verneint die Erfolge der Entwicklung ganz bewusst – «man sieht» den «Lärm». Als sich an einem Schweizer Flugplatz ein erregter Herr wortreich über den störenden Lärm eines Kunstfliegers beklagte, staunte man nicht schlecht: Es war ein Segelflugzeug. Max Ungricht

Engines of this type are similar in principle to jet engines. Air drawn into the intake is compressed by a compressor. Fuel is added to the air in a combustor, where the fuel-air mixture combusts. The difference is that jet engines often have multiple combustion chambers, and the exhaust gases are allowed to expand out towards the rear to a nozzle where they are accelerated to high speed to provide propulsion. In turboprop engines, the hot, expanding combustion gases are used to drive a turbine, which is coupled to the propeller via a reduction gear. This technology has diverse benefits: It is lighter, more fuel-efficient – and significantly quieter. «visible’ flight noise» Today’s passenger aircraft can be as much as 30 decibels quieter than those of the 1950s. A decrease of ten decibels means an airplane is only half as loud. In an environmental report on aviation in 2007, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) confirmed that today’s aircraft produce only about a quarter as much noise as their counterparts 40 years ago. What’s more, today’s aircraft ascend to lofty heights much faster. Visitors to Bern Airport can easily verify this. The turboprop planes lift off by the time they reach the middle of the runway, then shoot upwards into the blue at an impressive speed – with only the subdued roar that is typical of these aircraft models. Nowadays, anyone who talks about ‘aircraft noise’ would appear to be negating these technical advances as they claim to ‘see’ the ‘noise’. Once, at a Swiss airfield, when an irate man complained vociferously about the annoying noise caused by a stunt pilot, the others around him could hardly contain their amazement: It was a glider!
