Das ist Alex Gribi, der Mann, der im März 1983 auf dem Flughafen Bern-Belp mit der Gründung der SkyWork AG den Grundstein zur heutigen SkyWork Airlines legte. Genau, Sie rechnen richtig – das war vor mehr als 30 Jahren! 20 Jahre später, im Jahr 2003, wurde aus der SkyWork AG die SkyWork Airlines.

Redaktion: Wie kamen Sie zur Fliegerei? Alex Gribi: Über viele Jahre gehörten meinem Vater auf dem Flughafen Bern diverse Flugbetriebe. In diesem Umfeld wuchs ich auf. Mit 19 Jahren begann ich selber zu ﬂiegen. Zwei Jahre später war ich im Besitz der Linienpiloten-Lizenz; alle Fluglehrer-Lizenzen für Flächenﬂieger sowie der Berufspilotenausweis für Helikopter folgten.

Editorial team: How did you end up in aviation? Alex Gribi: My father owned various aviation operations at Bern Airport for many years. I grew up in that environment and started flying myself when I was 19. Two years later, I had my commercial pilot license. All the flight instructor licenses for fixed-wing planes and a professional pilot license for helicopters followed.

In the 1970s, I operated the largest and best-known Swiss ﬂight school with almost 20 light aircraft and seven ﬂight instructors, with branches in Germany and Austria, too.

When was SkyWork AG been founded? In 1983, I decided to leave my father's company and start up my own airline.

Woher der Name SkyWork? Ein enger Freund von mir ﬂog damals in Nordafrika Versorgungsﬂüge. Inspiriert von dieser Arbeit in der Luft (Work in the Sky) und der Absicht, selber in diesem Tätigkeitsfeld zu arbeiten, entstand der Name SkyWork.

Where did you get the name SkyWork? At that time a close friend of mine ﬂew supply ﬂights back in North Africa. Inspired by this work in the air (work in the sky) and the intention to work in a similar business, the name SkyWork was created.

Bildete die SkyWork auch auf zweimotorigen Flugzeugen Piloten aus? Ja, und die Flugzeuge wurden für Taxiflüge eingesetzt, später kamen Jets dazu.

Did SkyWork train pilots on twin-engine aircraft as well? Yes, and the aircraft were used for air-taxi ﬂights. Later, jets were added.

Wann wurde aus SkyWork die SkyWork Airlines? 2003. Im Jahr zuvor kam das Aus von Air Engiadina/Swiss Wings. Da gründete ich die Chartergesellschaft SkyWork Airlines, um mit einer ersten Dornier einzusteigen.

War die Nachfrage da? Verschiedene Tour Operators und ReisebĂźros im Raum Bern waren interessiert an Charterverbindungen ab Bern. Die Dornier erwies sich bald als zu klein, und so wurde 2008 zusĂ¤tzlich eine 72-plĂ¤tzige Dash 8-400 angeschafft. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt standen Ăźber 50 Mitarbeiter im Dienst von SkyWork Airlines. Basis war das 2004 neu erstellte GebĂ¤ude im Terminal Nord.

Was there demand for such a service? Various tour operators and travel agencies in the Bern region were interested in charter connections from Bern. The Dornier soon proved to be too small, so a 72-seater Dash 8-400 was added in 2008. At this point, SkyWork Airlines had more than 50 employees. The base was the newly-erected building in 2004 in the north terminal.

Gab es Hochs und Tiefs? Das Jahr 2008 brachte mit dem Kauf einer weiteren Citation Excel den HĂśhepunkt, aber auch operationelle Probleme und ďŹ nanzielle Verluste, als die Dash nach einer harten Landung acht Wochen lang ausďŹ el.

Were there highs and lows? The year 2008 was a high point with the purchase of an additional Citation Excel, but there were also operational problems and ďŹ nancial losses when the Dash was out of commission for eight weeks following an especially hard landing.

Ihnen war dann nicht mehr mĂśglich, die Firma als Alleininhaber weiterzufĂźhren? Ich konnte einen meiner Stammkunden als Investor gewinnen. Diese Bieler PersĂśnlichkeit Ăźbernahm bis April 2011 die Mehrheit der Aktienanteile und stieg mit der SkyWork Airlines ab Bern ins aktive LinienfluggeschĂ¤ft ein. Heute betreibt diese Fluggesellschaft mit Ăźber 100 Mitarbeitenden sechs Turboprops.

Did it then become impossible for you to run the company on your own? I was able to win over one of my core customers as an investor. This individual from Biel took over the majority of shares until April 2011 and entered the active scheduled-ďŹ&#x201A;ight business with SkyWork Airlines from Bern. Today, this airline has over 100 employees and six turboprop aircraft.

SKYWORK, I SCHÄNKE DIR MIS HÄRZ SKYWORK, «I GIVE YOU MY HEART»

Bei Züri West, der bekanntesten Schweizer Rockband, sitzt seit 1993 Gert Stäuble am Schlagzeug. Und seit 2012 sitzt der Drummer bei SkyWork Airlines im Cockpit. Wo immer Stäuble auch ist – er strahlt Sicherheit und Ruhe aus. Mit runden Beats bei seiner Band und mit feinen Steuerbewegungen am Steuerhorn seines Flugzeugs.

Gert Stäuble has been sitting behind the drums of the best-known Swiss rock band, Züri West, since 1993. And the drummer has been sitting in the cockpit as a SkyWork Airlines pilot since 2012. Wherever Stäuble is, he exudes a secure and calm demeanour – whether it is with smooth beats with his band or graceful steering maneuvers at the helm of his aircraft.

Der Schlagzeuger der Schweizer Rock-Kultband ist seit 25 Jahren Vollblutmusiker. Er schreibt Kompositionen für einheimische Bands, spielt selber als Gitarrist und Bassist auf verschiedenen Tonträgern mit und ist seit 1993 bei Züri West als Schlagzeuger engagiert.

The drummer from the iconic Swiss rock band has been a passionate musician for 25 years. He composes songs for local bands, plays along as a guitarist and bass player on different recordings and has been the drummer for Züri West since 1993.

Stäuble wirkte auch als Produzent. Im eigenen Tonstudio half er verschiedenen Schweizer Künstlern, ihre Karriere zu lancieren. Das Tonstudio hat der Vater von drei kleinen Kindern nun aber durch eine andere Faszination ersetzt: die Fliegerei.

Stäuble has also worked as a producer. He has helped various Swiss artists launch their careers from his own recording studio. However, the recording studio has now been replaced by another fascination for the father of three young children – ﬂying.

Spagat zwischen Schlagzeug und Cockpit In der Flugschneise des Berner Flughafens aufgewachsen, war Gerts Begeisterung für das Fliegen quasi vorgegeben. Auf dem Flughafen Bern erwarb er 1996 die Privat-Piloten-Lizenz. Dann folgten weitere Ausbildungsschritte: die Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) und im Jahr 2001 die Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). Nun ﬂiegt der Berner Gert Stäuble also als Copilot bei SkyWork Airlines auf der Dornier – und wenn er nicht fliegt, dann musiziert er bei Züri West. Die zwei so unterschiedlichen und unregelmässigen Jobs bringt er dank einer flexiblen Einsatzplanung von SkyWork unter einen Hut. Seine Freiwünsche werden berücksichtigt und er kann je nach Bedarf das Arbeitspensum aufstocken oder reduzieren, so zum Beispiel geschehen bei der Tournee mit Züri West im Winter 2012.

Balancing act between drum set and cockpit Growing up in the ﬂight path of Bern Airport, Stäuble's passion for f lying was almost a given. He gained his private pilot license at Bern Airport in 1996. This was followed by further training stages: Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) in 2001. Bern native Stäuble now f lies as a co-pilot in a Dornier for SkyWork Airlines – and when he's not f lying, he is making music with Züri West. WIEN Traditionelles Gericht Wiener Schnitzel ist ein ﬂachgeklopftes, am Rand eingeschnittenes Kalbsschnitzel. Dieses wird in Mehl, dem mit Milch und Wasser versprudelten Ei und in Semmelbröseln gewendet. Dann wird es in der Pfanne in reichlich Fett unter wiederholtem Schwingen der Pfanne beidseitig goldbraun gebacken.

Traditional recipe Wiener Schnitzel is a thin, tenderized cut of veal with incised edges. It is covered in ﬂour, then dipped in a mixture of milk, water and beaten egg and covered in bread crumbs. The schnitzel is then placed in a pan with a generous amount of oil and turned over repeatedly until it is fried golden brown on both sides.

Als Beilage werden üblicherweise Erdäpfelsalat (Kartoffelsalat) oder Petersil-Erdäpfel serviert, das Ganze garniert mit einer Zitronenspalte. Name und Speise stammen angeblich aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Das Rezept des damals in Norditalien als «Costoletta alla Milanese» bekannten Essens soll 1857 vom österreichischen Feldmarschall Graf Joseph Radetzky nach Wien gebracht worden sein.

It is usually served with potato salad or roasted potatoes with parsley, and the entire dish is garnished with lemon slices. The name and the recipe supposedly date back to the 19th century. The recipe of the dish, which was known in northern Italy at the time as «Costoletta alla Milanese», is said to have been brought to Vienna in 1857 by the Austrian ﬁeld marshal Count Joseph Radetzky.

With tradition in mind, the culinary treasure hunters decide to head to Grinzing on the edge of Vienna to sample «Heurigen» (this year's wine). Here they are, sitting around drinking «Heurigen» and enjoying the musical accompaniment. In summer you can sit outdoors in lush gardens, and in winter cosy salons are very inviting. Back in the city centre, everyone's attention is turned toward another Viennese tradition – coffee houses.

A laidback coffee Cushioned chairs, the smell of coffee in the air and a convivial atmosphere all invite you to linger over coffee and cake. All the different coffee variations – Viennese melange, Franciscan, «Einspänner» black coffee with whipped cream – make it very hard to choose. Why not a simple espresso? After a thorough description of the coffee in mind, it becomes clear: They call that a «verlängerter Brauner» here. A piece of Sachertorte with creamy chocolate icing and whipped cream or a Palatschinken (a sweet omelette) are perfect accompaniments. Enjoy!

Die Redaktion hatte die Gelegenheit, Tom am Flughafen Bern zu einem Gespräch zu treffen. Für den in Linden aufgewachsenen und nun in Oberdiessbach wohnhaften Rennfahrer ist der Flughafen mit SkyWork Airlines nach Möglichkeit Ausgangspunkt für die Reisen zu den Rennen und Trainings.

The editorial team had the opportunity to meet Tom at Bern Airport and have a chat. For the motorcycle racer, who grew up in Linden and now lives in Oberdiessbach, the airport and SkyWork Airlines often provide the starting point for his trips to competitions and training sessions.

Mit 17 Jahren stand Lüthi bereits an einem Weltmeisterschaftsrennen auf dem Podest! Wahrlich aussergewöhnlich – zu dieser Zeit besass der talentierte junge Mann weder einen Töffausweis, noch konnte er in der Schweiz trainieren; das hiesige Rundstreckenverbot macht es Schweizer Motorsportlern nicht leicht. Ausländische Jungpiloten haben in diesem Alter schon Tausende von Trainingskilometern absolviert.

At 17 years of age, Lüthi had already made it to the podium of a world championship race! It was more than extraordinary, seeing as the talented young man still did not possess a motorcycle license and was unable to train in Switzerland. The national ban on motor racing circuits makes it difﬁcult for Swiss motor-sports racers. Young racers abroad have already covered thousands of training kilometres by that age.

Tom begann seine Karriere als Neunjähriger in Pocket-Bike-Rennen. Da die Rennen an Wochenenden stattfanden, musste Tom oft schon am Freitag anreisen und sich entsprechend mit der Schule arrangieren. Dies spornte ihn an, seine Abwesenheiten mit guten Leistungen zu rechtfertigen. Heute kümmern sich 12 Personen des Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing Teams um die Technik, den Betrieb des Rennteams, das Management und das Wohlbeﬁnden des Schweizer Motorradstars.

Tom began his career as a nine-year-old in pocket-bike racing. Since races were held on weekends, Tom often had to leave on Friday and make special arrangements with his school. This motivated him to make up for his absences with excellent grades. Today, the Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing Team has 12 people who oversee the technology, operation of the racing team, management and well-being of the Swiss motorcycle star.

Stürze und Verletzungen Lüthis Start in die Saison 2013 verlief alles andere als optimal. Bei Testfahrten in Valencia wurde er von einem thailändischen Piloten zu Fall gebracht und zog sich komplizierte Brüche an Arm, Ellbogen und Schulter zu. Weitere Tests fielen weg; auch die ersten zwei Rennläufe der Weltmeisterschaften liess Tom aus. Redaktion: Sie haben Höhen und Tiefen des Rennsports miterlebt. Beeinflusst dies ihre Fahrweise? Tom Lüthi: Zunächst bin ich froh, dass mein Arzt das Gelenk an meinem Arm so perfekt wiederherstellen konnte. Ihm gebührt ganz grosser Dank. Natürlich behinderten mich in den ersten Rennen des Jahres noch die Schmerzen. Und Ihre Frage: Mit zunehmendem Alter und Erfahrung fährt man mehr taktisch und strategisch. Erfahrung heisst, dass man mehr vorausdenkt. Wie haben Sie das Handicap als «Schweizer Pilot» wettgemacht? Es geht ja nicht nur ums Fahren, auch andere Dinge sind wichtig. Viel läuft auf der mentalen Ebene ab oder über die Vorbereitungen: Ich mache Gleichgewichtsübungen und treibe viel Sport (Mountainbike, Langlauf, Kraftraum, Ausdauer und Skifahren). Kiten würde ich gerne öfters. Für die Rennen muss man topfit sein. Was treibt Sie an, welches sind Ihre Ziele? Vieles. Die Faszination Motorsport. Der Schnellste zu sein. Die Zusammenarbeit im Team. Nach dem unglücklichen Saisonbeginn den Anschluss wieder zu schaffen und regelmässig in der Spitzengruppe zu fahren.

Crashes and injuries Lüthi's start to the 2013 season was anything but ideal. During test runs in Valencia, a Thai driver caused him to crash and he suffered complicated breaks to his arm, elbow and shoulder. He had to drop out of future training runs and also missed the first two races of the world championships. Editorial team: You have experienced the highs and lows of motor-sports racing. Does this influence the way you drive? Tom Lüthi: Above all, I am happy that my doctor could patch together the joint on my arm so perfectly. He really deserves a lot of gratitude. Of course, the pain affected me during the first races of the year. And now to answer your question, I think that with increasing age and experience, you drive more tactically and strategically. Experience means that you think ahead more. How have you dealt with the handicap of being a «Swiss racer»? Racing is not the only thing that counts; there are also other things that are important. A lot takes place on a mental level or during your preparations beforehand. I do balance training and many other sports (mountain-biking, crosscountry, strength training, endurance, downhill skiing). Aber das Fliegen, besonders im Helikopter, würde mich reizen! Ich habe mich schon eingehend informiert und kenne daher auch die Profis der Mountainflyers in Bern-Belp persönlich.

EINE BRIEFTAUBE FÜR 50 000 FRANKEN A HOMING PIGEON WORTH 50 000 SWISS FRANCS Ferdi Jäger aus Belp ist ein Brieftaubenzüchter, wie sich ihn der Laie vorstellt. Mit Leib und Seele ist er für seine ungefähr 60 Tiere da, die meisten kennt er mit Namen.

Ferdi Jäger from Belp is, in lay terms, a homing pigeon breeder. He puts his heart and soul into taking care of his approximately 60 birds and knows most of them by name.

Und selbstverständlich wird ihm oft die Frage gestellt: «Weiss man, woher die Brieftauben ihren Orientierungssinn haben, der sie selbst über die Alpen hinweg über 1000 Kilometer nachhause ﬁnden lässt?»

Resignierend meint der 77-jährige Baselbieter, dass auch bei der Brieftaubenzucht das Geld die Oberhand gewonnen hat: «Im Mittleren Osten finden heute Wettbewerbe mit einer Preissumme von einer Million Franken statt.» Deshalb verwundert es nicht, dass Besitzer schon mal bis zu 50 000 Franken für eine besonders erfolgreiche Taube ausgeben.

The airport director says so and he means it, too. Mathias Häberli has been the CEO of the airport in Switzerland's capital since 2009, and he often has to listen to criticism as well.

Editorial team: Which are the biggest challenges? Mathias Häberli: Stagnation is like taking a step backwards – constant forward movement and sustainable development are the name of the game. It is a challenge to convince the political, business and tourism sectors that air trafﬁc to and from Bern-Belp makes an important contribution to public transportation – and should be treated that way.

Ist der (aufwendige) internationale Sicherheitsstandard wirklich nötig? Um internationale Flüge anbieten zu können, müssen wir uns dem weltweiten Standard anpassen. Bern ist keine aviatische Insel, sondern in einem stark standardisierten und reglementierten internationalen Umfeld tätig.

Are the (sometimes exhaustive) international safety standards really necessary? In order to be able to offer international ﬂights, we have to adhere to worldwide safety standards. Bern is no aviation island, but rather is active in a rigorously standardized and regulated international setting.

Eine teure Angelegenheit … Ja, vor allem im Bereich Security gibt es laufend Anpassungen, da sich Technologien immer weiter entwickeln. Die Übernahme dieser Aufwände wären ganz klar eine Staatsaufgabe, da der Flughafen Bern eine offizielle internationale Grenze ist. Und die Grenzsicherheit und Massnahmen zur Abwehr von terroristischen Handlungen sind Staatsaufgaben. Das Gewaltmonopol liegt beim Staat und folglich aus meiner Sicht auch dessen Finanzierung.

An expensive undertaking … Yes, especially in the area of security there are constant adjustments to be made because technology is always being developed. Normally, assuming these costs would certainly fall under state spending since Bern Airport is an ofﬁcial international border, and ensuring border security and measures to protect against terrorist acts are government responsibilities. The monopoly of power lies with the state and thus also its ﬁnancing, in my opinion.

Was wäre der Flughafen Bern ohne SkyWork Airlines? Primär stellt sich diese Frage an die Politik, Wirtschaft, den Tourismus und die Region. Der Flughafen ist nicht Selbstzweck, sondern hat die Funktion eines Luftbahnhofs für die Region. Natürlich ist es für jeden Flughafen ein Glücksfall, einen aktiven, innovativen Homebase-Carrier zu beheimaten.

What would happen to Bern Airport without SkyWork Airlines? This question should primarily be directed at politicians, business leaders, tourism and the region. The airport is not an end in itself, but rather fulﬁls the function of an air transport hub for the region. Of course, it is a fortunate thing for any airport to be the home base of an active, innovative carrier.

Wie sieht der Flughafen Bern in zehn Jahren aus? Das ist im volatilen Kaffeesatz zu lesen. Wenn aber die Infrastruktur und das wirtschaftliche Umfeld stimmen, bin ich überzeugt, dass sich immer mehr Airlines für diesen Flughafen und dieses Einzugsgebiet interessieren werden. Wir haben dafür eine nachhaltige Grundlage geschaffen, die das gewährleisten kann.

What will Bern Airport look like in ten years? You would have to «read the tea leaves» to ﬁnd that out. However, I am convinced that if the infrastructure and economic environment are right, more and more airlines will become interested in this airport and its catchment area. We have created a sustainable foundation to be able to guarantee this.

Der Berufsmusiker Sandro Häsler aus Interlaken spielt mit seiner Sinatra Tribute Band im Tonstudio melodiöse amerikanische Weihnachtsklassiker, aber auch besinnliche Stücke und rockige Arrangements ein. Dies für die CD-Produktion «Winter Wonderland», einer mitreissenden Concert Show in Anlehnung an Frank Sinatras «Christmas Album».

Professional musician Sandro Häsler from Interlaken and his Sinatra Tribute Band are playing American easy-listening Christmas classics as well as contemplative pieces and rock-style arrangements in a recording studio. The songs are for the «Winter Wonderland» CD production, a captivating concert show in honour of Frank Sinatra's «Christmas Album».

Dazwischen immer wieder lautes Lachen – ein Markenzeichen der Band – heitere Stimmung, saloppe Sprüche, auf Knopfdruck professionelles, konzentriertes Arbeiten und zwei gemeinsame Leidenschaften: die Musik von Frank Sinatra und den Swing.

Every so often, loud laughter – a trademark of the band – is heard, together with an upbeat mood, rakish jokes and a professional, concentrated attitude when required. Two mutual passions are tangible: the music of Frank Sinatra and the love of swing.

Fast eine reine Berner Band Sandro ist schon seit seiner Kindheit fasziniert von Frank Sinatras Musik. Mit der Gründung der achtköpfigen Sinatra Tribute Band hat sich der Trompeter einen langgehegten Traum erfüllt.

Almost a purely Bernese band Sandro has been fascinated by Frank Sinatra's music since he was a child. With the formation of the eight-member Sinatra Tribute Band, the trumpet player fulﬁlled a long-held dream.

Mit dabei sind sechs exzellente Jazz-Berufsmusiker aus der Schweiz. Sein Bruder Rolf aus Interlaken, die in der Region Bern wohnhaften Vincent Lachat, Georgios Antoniou, Jérôme de Carli und Daniel Aebi sowie der Aargauer Reto Anneler bilden den messerscharfen Bläsersatz und die swingende Rhythmusgruppe. Als Frontmann konnte Bandleader Sandro Häsler den bekannten Münchner Scat-Sänger und Pianisten Max Neissendorfer für sein Projekt begeistern.

He has six excellent professional jazz musicians from Switzerland along for the ride. His brother Rolf from Interlaken, Bern residents Vincent Lachat, Georgios Antoniou, Jérôme de Carli and Daniel Aebi and Reto Annelo from Aargau make up the razor-sharp brass sound of the swinging rhythm group. Vier Tage Studioaufnahmen Ferien? Keinesfalls. Studioaufnahmen heisst konzentriertes, professionelles Arbeiten. Jeder der Musiker ist hochmotiviert und gut vorbereitet. Der Berner Jazz-Musiker Andy Harder sitzt als «Coach» im Aufnahmestudio und sorgt für den reibungslosen Ablauf der Aufnahmen. Doch trotz perfekten Rahmenbedingungen macht sich nach acht Stunden Aufnahmearbeit langsam die Müdigkeit breit und die Mägen beginnen zu knurren. Gemeinsam geht es zum Italiener gleich über die Strasse. Kaum am Tisch fallen die Musiker wie eine Herde Heuschrecken über die Brotkörbe her – ein weiteres Markenzeichen der Band … Ende gut und alles im «Kasten» Mit dem Einspielen ist die Arbeit aber noch lange nicht getan – das Rohmaterial muss abgemischt und «gemastert» werden. Pünktlich, nämlich einen Tag vor Winterbeginn, wird die Reise ins Winter Wonderland Interlaken führen, wo im Kunsthaus die neue CD aus der Taufe gehoben wird.

Four days of studio recording Something of a holiday? Deﬁnitely not. Studio recording requires concentrated, professional work. Each of the musicians is highly motivated and well prepared. Bernese jazz musician Andy Harder acts as a «coach» in the recording studio and ensures that the recording goes off without a hitch. However, despite perfect conditions, after eight hours of recording work, fatigue starts to set in and stomachs begin to growl. Everyone heads over to the Italian restaurant across the street. Barely seated at the table, the musicians descend on the bread baskets like an invasion of locusts – a further trademark of the band … A perfect end and everything is «wrapped up» Recording is just the ﬁrst step, however. The raw material must be mixed and mastered. The trip to the Winter Wonderland in Interlaken will take place right on time, i.e. one day before the start of winter, and the launch of the new CD will be held at the Kunsthaus.

Woher die unterschiedlichen «Sounds»? Bis in die 1950er-Jahre dominierten Kolbenmotoren die Fliegerei. Stern-, Reihen- oder Boxermotoren. Der typisch kernige Ton wurde nicht mit Schalldämpfern «abgewürgt». Ein Hörgenuss in Reinformat!

Where do the different «sounds» come from? Piston engines dominated aviation until the 1950s, with radial, straight and boxer engines. The typical robust sound was not moderated in any way by mufﬂers. Pure and unadulterated listening pleasure!

Ab 1960 hielten die Düsentriebwerke Einzug. Zunächst hoch und unangenehm pfeifend, heute mit tiefem und angenehmem Sound (Mantelstromtriebwerke). Das Nonplusultra der kommerziellen Fliegerei sind aber die Turbopropantriebe, wie sie von den SkyWorkAirlines-Maschinen Dash und Dornier verwendet werden. Technisch sind diese Antriebe dem Düsentriebwerk ähnlich, der Abgasstrahl treibt jedoch den Propeller an. Das entspricht (fast) der Quadratur des Kreises: Turboprops sind leiser und sparsamer als Jet-Antriebe.

From 1960 on, jet engines took over. Initially very high-pitched and unpleasant, the engines have a low and pleasant sound today (turbofans). The ultimate in commercial aviation, however, are the turboprop engines, such as the ones used in SkyWork Airlines' Dash and Dornier aircraft. From a technical viewpoint, they are very similar to jet engines, but the exhaust emission drives the propellers. This (almost) corresponds to squaring a circle: Turboprops are quieter and more economical than jet engines.
