I

have often wondered what people think of Fargo, and essentially North Dakota, upon their first visit. For whatever reason, it’s always troubled me to think that they may not be getting a true glimpse of what this great state is all about. Many see just a small fragment of our area: barren roads, endless highways and sometimes scarce towns. Unless they’ve really gotten to plant their roots here, to meet the people or venture out to a farm during harvest, they probably haven’t seen what I see. There’s profound beauty and charm in this valley, sometimes hard to capture and even harder to explain to those just passing through. Being raised on a farm and now living in the city, I have come to appreciate the life I once took for granted. Some of my favorite memories are of driving down country roads, standing amidst the corn fields and witnessing the excitement and pride of harvest. The last time I was back home during the summer I remember stopping in the yard watching the sunset, completely caught off guard at what I heard. Absolutely nothing. Over a decade of living in the city had made the perpetual drone of traffic a constant ring in my ears. Feeling that this kind of serene life was now unattainable to me, I was more than intrigued to find out that a local man by the name of Ken Promersberger was developing a section of land with an urban farm concept. What made it interesting was that he had centered his concept around those same values and hard-to-capture charm that I loved growing up. Imagine creating a neighborhood that could give you the tranquility of waking up on the farm, without the actual farm work. Modern day barns, silos, machine sheds, duck ponds and wildflowers setting the scene for a simpler life. Getting to hear about Promersberger’s vision for creating this neighborhood, inspired me to see what else is out there. I wanted to know if there were other neighborhoods in the process of being developed and what this could mean to those searching for their own version of “home.” After spending time researching this topic and speaking with local developers, we came to find out there are actually closer to 50 new neighborhoods in the works. As there are never enough pages, we chose just a handful to show your their version of what makes a neighborhood a home. Thank you to all of the developers who sat down with us, gave their time and shared their vision. We hope you enjoy this issue, and as always we encourage you to send us your thoughts, feedback and ideas!

Writer and contributor Susanne Williams is a textile and mixed media artist with her downtown Fargo studio/gallery, Willi Nilli. She is also the Artist-in-Residence at Roger Maris Cancer Center, Sanford Health. She has served as Executive Director of The Uptown Gallery in Fargo and Associate Professor of mass communication at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Williams holds a Ph.D. in communication from Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich.

Contributor Maria Bosak is the owner and creator of Eco Chic Boutique with retail locations in Fargo and Bismarck. Bosak is the founder of Junk Market, a twice a year, two-day event featuring the best in re-purposed furniture, vintage finds and unique handmade products in the Upper Midwest. he Fargo-Moorhead area is a growing community with many new developments to choose from for your new home. Here are six quick tips if you are considering purchasing a lot to build new.

WHEN CONSIDERING DEVELOPMENTS AND LOTS FOR YOUR NEW HOME

HOUSE TYPE

Some developments focus on twin home communities, while others cater to high-end custom homes. Some are zoned for high-density, and some for large lots. Crunch numbers and meet with a builder to determine what type of home is in your price range and tastes.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE

Consumers can purchase a lot on their own or work with a builder who may have lots available within developments. Most builders will work with owners who have purchased their own land, or will work to find a suitable lot.

LOT SIZE

Once you know what type of home you want to build and its approximate size, think about lot size. This will eliminate some developments. Your budget will also play into this decision. Larger lots generally cost more up front and will require more special assessments. If you wish to improve your property later, consider whether or not the size would allow for an addition or accessory building.

DEVELOPMENT FEATURES AND AMENITIES Research the developments in the area and what appeals to you. Once you’ve decided what part of the community appeals to you, visit the developments and drive around. Things to consider:

TYPE OF LOT

A corner lot may offer more yard space and one less neighbor, but it also may mean more traffic, yard care, snow removal and higher specials. Living on a corner, homeowners also need to think about curb appeal on two sides of the house. Would you like to live in a cul-de-sac, or would you prefer to have no backyard neighbors? If you are at the end of a T-shape street, headlights may distract at night. The direction your home faces on a lot will impact snow removal, energy bills and window placement.

Nearby amenities (shopping, schools, parks, etc.) What’s important to you and your family? Is being near conveniences like schools, health care and your place of work a priority? Stage of the development Is it appealing to be the first or second house in a development and experiencing construction going on around you for months, if not years? If not, maybe you should focus your efforts on areas that are more built-out. Nearby open fields and zoning overlays Familiarize yourself with what may be built in areas near a new development as no one wants to be surprised by a commercial or retail property going up just outside their back yard.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Besides thinking about special assessments and the simple cost of purchasing the lot, home buyers should find out if the development is in the current flood plain, and if not, whether it will be in the future, and what that means.

It’s been almost three years since Fargo artist Marjorie Schlossman’s solo exhibition filled the two main galleries of the Plains Art Museum. Since then she’s moved into her new studio space, exhibited her work in Europe, began teaching a weekly abstract painting class, completed the prototype for a major painting installation and is working on a new book. She’s also a violinist in the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and a mother of seven children.

Most of the time, Schlossman paints in her new studio inside the former Gene’s TV building on Main Avenue. The sign for Gene’s is still there, but the building was completely transformed a couple of years ago with the help of architect Richard Moorhead.

S

chlossman recently put the finishing touches on a 10foot long canvas painting, a prototype for the next installation in her chapel on the corner of Roberts and Fifth Street. “I want to be able to paint on a single canvas surface and I want it to curve around the interior of the chapel,” Schlossman explained. “The viewer will be surrounded by a continuous painting about 60 feet long.” Paintings are typically stretched on individual wooden frames, so installing a single canvas of this size calls for some creativity. Schlossman enlisted her son Herb Ludwig (the firstborn of her seven children) to figure it out. Ludwig devised a system of free-standing vertical poles holding a sheet of semi-rigid reclaimed plastic

that will support and stretch the enormous canvas. He’s now in the process of installing the system inside the chapel. “It’s rare to be able to work on this size,” Schlossman said. “I’ll paint it in the chapel in the light where it will be viewed.”There isn’t a timeline for this project. “It will take as long as it takes,” Schlossman said with a smile. “When I decide I’m not interested in it anymore, it will be finished.” The Making of an Artist Schlossman didn’t consider herself an artist until she was 28 years old. By then she had four children. Living in California at the time, she had found a family camp for the kids at Stanford University. She showed up for one of the camp’s

drawing classes only to find it cancelled. “I had my son Ulysses with me. He was four or six weeks old and I had him strapped onto me in a carrier,” she remembered. “The class was cancelled but I stayed anyway and sketched. That’s when I knew that I wanted and needed to do more drawing.” Six months later, Schlossman connected with Richard Irving Bowman, an abstract expressionist painter who taught at Stanford University and the Art Institute of Chicago. Every Wednesday morning for the next eight years, she attended Bowman’s class, learning to draw and paint.

During the past year, Schlossman’s son took on the daunting task of sorting and cataloging every piece of artwork She’s created since the 1970s. He’s set up a digital archive, photographing each piece and writing a full description. After assigning a unique QR Code to every item, he’s archived the pieces in an impressive system of massive vertical racks and flat files.

At first, Bowman taught her the basics, which included learning to draw and paint representationally. “I went to abstract as soon as he would let me,” Schlossman said. “So much of his philosophy mirrored that of my uncle, Gunther Schueller,” Schlossman says of Bowman. Schueller is a composer and musician living in Boston, Mass. “Art should be honest. Art should be full of quality. I was looking to absorb the best. They (Bowman and Schueller) were not willing to go with the crowd. They had independent views that were informed by the best,” she said. “I think I’m that way, too.” Schlossman paints regularly, “slugging it out in the studio,” as she describes it. “You have to isolate yourself in the studio and let the work grow organically in ways you can’t predict,” Schlossman said, referring to the late San Francisco Chronicle art critic, Thomas Albright. “In a simplistic way, you enter an inspired state where you see whole worlds appear. I entertain

myself with what appears. I find it mysterious.” “I’ve catalogued more than 3,000 of her works,” Ludwig said. “And I’m not done.” There are so many works of art for two reasons. First, Schlossman toils away in the studio and regularly produces the work. Not for Sale Second, and perhaps somewhat surprising, is that Schlossman’s work is not for sale. The few individuals who own a Schlossman painting received it as a gift from the artist, or they placed the winning bid at the annual silent auction fundraiser for the Plains Art Museum, an event to which Schlossman has donated her paintings. She’s also contributed some large-scale pieces to West Acres Mall, where they are routinely seen by thousands of people. “I don’t sell because I am building a body of work and I want it to be whole,” she explains. “I have a sense of art needing to be public and owned by the public.” Married in October 2014,

Schlossman and her husband Ivan Weir recently traveled to England for her first international exhibition experience. Her acrylic painting, “When the Cat’s Away,” was juried into the London Biennale, held in January 2015 at Chelsea Old Town Hall. The curated exhibition accepted only 130 artists from 45 countries out of the 2,500 applicants. A patron of the London Biennale wanted to buy Schlossman’s painting, but she declined the offer and shipped the piece back to Fargo to be donated to the Plains Art Museum’s fundraising event. After Schlossman’s solo exhibition at the Plains Art Museum, she was approached to teach an abstract painting class there. She immediately asked if the class could meet Wednesday mornings. “I took my painting class every Wednesday morning. I wanted to create that experience here,” she said.

A Class Act For the past few years, 20 students, mostly in their 50s and 60s, gather each Wednesday inside the Katherine Kilbourne Center for the Arts. Some are professional artists, while others hold different professional careers. There’s a veterinarian, floral designer, jewelry designer, physician and an English professor, among others.

focusing on Schlossman’s selected artist of the day. Every week, a student makes a formal presentation about their assigned artist.

“They are all curious and passionate about art. It’s a collaborative, noncompetitive group,” Schlossman said.

Upcoming This June, Plains Art Museum will exhibit work by Schlossman’s students. At the same time, Schlossman and Ludwig intend to release their forthcoming book show, casing more than 50 paintings by her students. Titled “Themes and Emotion, Plains School of Abstract Painting,” the paintings are a response to Schlossman’s class assignment to paint specific emotions.

The class, which Schlossman named The Plains School for Abstract Painting, spends the first two hours of each session painting, with the students each at an easel. Some of them work on canvas, others on paper. Schlossman works her way around the room, making suggestions and commenting on their progress and choice of colors. “I want people newer to abstract painting to explore a lot. For those who are more established in their styles, I watch to see that they are still moving forward in their work,” she said. She also keeps the group focused on abstract painting. She explains, “If they want to put a tree into their painting, I say, ‘I can’t help you with that.’”

“Art history is essential to the serious abstract painter who hopes to achieve a certain level of sophistication,” she noted.

Whether she is teaching others or painting in her studio, one thing remains clear for Schlossman: she remains true to her commitment to making a valuable contribution. “I try to contribute only what I can — my personal vision from my experience and particular, even peculiar, view of the world,” Schlossman said. “I love to think my work might contribute to our culture, but if not, it is still important for us artists to try.”

• Disposable paintbrush • Small, shallow bowl • Water-based sizing • Kraft paper • Gold leaf PRICES: • Lamp - $10 • New shade - $9.99 • Gilding and sizing - $15 (Available at Eco Chic)

Lay down kraft paper to protect surface you are working on and to act as a catch for the crumbles of gold leaf.

3 2 Clean surface of project piece with mild soap and water, removing any grease or grime.

Apply a thin coat of sizing to entire project surface. Then walk away and get a cup of coffee (or wine).

NOTES:

BEFORE

There is no need to seal gold leaf unless you are working on a surface that is very high traffic and will be exposed to liquids. If your surface needs sealing, apply a clear topcoat specifically formulated for gold leafing. Bosak recommends finding this at GildedPlanet.com. Work in a well-lit area with no wind. Gold leaf is very light and any breeze will blow it away.

5 Once the entire piece is covered, go back and fill in any holes or gaps with additional gold leaf. This is a good time to use those scraps and crumbs that fell off.

Start applying gold leaf sheets in sections. The gold leaf will adhere to the sized surface. Using fingertips, simply push/rub the leafing until it is secure on your piece.

Wait 30 minutes for sizing to tack up. Sizing will remain workable for 24 to 36 hours after applying so you can step away and return to your project as needed. Once you are satisfied with how your piece looks, simply brush away any leftover loose leafing.

WHAT IS GOLD LEAF?

Gold leaf is gold that has been hammered into extremely thin sheets by goldbeating and is often used for gilding. It is available in a wide variety of karats and shades. The most commonly used gold is 22-karat yellow-gold.

WHAT IS SIZING?

Size refers to the adhesive material used to adhere gold, silver, copper or metal leaf to the surface being gilded.

Teaming up with our very own contributor and design guru Trever Hill, these two orchestrated a design surprise for Voigt's wife that would raise the bar in romantic gestures. Anticipating a subtle upgrade to the basement of their Woodbridge home in Dilworth, Minn., this HGTV-worthy makeover far exceeded one lucky wife's expectations.

"Adam knew Ashley would want a swivel bar stool with a back rest on it. This was a challenging task as many of the bar stools are either traditional or stationary. I searched every store I could think of locally, then I finally searched online and ended up finding the perfect bar stool for them on Overstock. We had the bar stools and the accent chairs shipped to me so Ashley would still have no idea about the surprise that was coming."

How did you come up with this idea to surprise Ashley? Adam: "It took a couple different quotes until we finally found the right company to work with who had the same vision of how we wanted our wet bar to look. We are grateful for designingwomen2 for connecting us with CNC Wood Design. As the bar was being finished, our room didn't match the overall look we had in our heads. And with Ashley recently becoming pregnant with our second child, I knew I wanted someone to help and give us a push to finish the final steps. Also, Ashley is always putting others first and this is just something I wanted to do for her since she would never do it for herself." Is this something you ever suspected Adam would do? Ashley: "I have to say my husband is romantic, has always been great at surprises and loves a good presentation. He usually goes above and beyond with everything so that the final outcome is extra special, whether it’s with work, weddings or my birthday gifts. So it’s not out of the question that he would do something like this, but the time and effort to make an entire room change completely (with the help of Trever 42

of course) was something that never crossed my mind. I feel so loved that he went out of his way to make this project a surprise." Were you nervous about the design process at all or did you feel confident that Ashley would like the final look? Adam: "Ashley and I really have similar tastes, so I wasn't too nervous about the final look. Also, looking at Trever Hill Design's gallery online helped reassure me I was working with someone we could trust. Plus my wife and I knew Trever from our college days at MSUM. There was one point in time that I didn't feel very confident; it was when I had offered to go look at couches after work and Ashley said, 'I think we should make big purchases together.' That actually made me pretty nervous." How did you make sure Ashley did not find out? Adam: "It's pretty easy to make things a surprise if you try. She goes to work at 7, so I planned the meetings while she was at work. Also, we had the furniture shipped to Trever's place to hide it until the rest was being delivered to the house on surprise day. When you have the right help, things usually work pretty smoothly."

What was it like walking into your new basement? Ashley: "An incredible, overwhelming feeling of happiness and surprise. I truly felt like I was on HGTV. After blinking back tears and exhaling multiple gasps of 'What?!' I finally asked Adam, 'What do we have to do to keep all of this?' When he said it is ours, I was blown away. I knew CNC Wood Design had wanted to capture nice photos of their amazing work on the wet bar so I thought it was just staging. When I realized all of this beautiful work was for us to keep, I couldn’t stop with the questions or smiles. I was even more surprised that he had been working on this project with a friend from college. Trever’s part in this makes it even more special because years and years ago when his decorating was more of a hobby, I told Trever I wanted him to decorate my home one day. And here I was standing in this beautifully decorated room because of my husband’s thoughtful heart and the amazing design by Trever. I lost count of how many hugs I gave both of them in appreciation. And I have to add, that nothing was returned; I absolutely love everything about our new room."

“For additional seating we opted for a sectional and accent chairs with an ottoman so that they would be able to move that up against a wall in a pinch and instantly add a couple of seats. They originally had seating for 11. With the new design, they have seating for 17 when needed."

What are your favorite parts of the new design? Adam: "I love the whole thing. We took 100 year-old wood from the homestead on Ashley's family's hunting land and incorporated it into a wet bar in our basement that we now call our 'Homestead.' With CNC Wood Design and Trever's help, they have created a rustic chic ambiance where we will truly be spending some great quality time with friends and family." Ashley: "I agree with Adam. Not only is it something meaningful, but now there are two stories to tell. The history of the wet bar and how Adam decided to surprise me." What was it like working with an interior decorator on this project? Adam: "Amazing. Sometimes it is easier to have someone make decisions with and for you, rather than thinking we know what we want, but can't actually make the decisions to get to the final results we were looking for. Trever asked the right questions and really got a good 44

perspective of what we wanted. Plus this took him a year, less than it would have taken us to make it look 50 percent as good as it does now." Did any other family or friends know about this surprise? Adam: "Yes, the week before the big surprise, Ashley's family mentioned something about shopping for stools for the new wet bar. So I had to side track them and let her mom know what my plan was. Plus, when Ashley made the statement about making big purchases together, I just needed some reassuring that I was doing the right thing. So naturally I went to my mother-in-law, Lynda, probably the nicest person in the world, because I knew she would reassure me even if I was making a big mistake." Did this room start out as an unfinished basement or was it partially finished when you started it? Adam: "This was a fully finished basement prior to the remodel. The previous owners had a great wood

look throughout the room, but it was the ceiling that we wanted to keep and incorporate into the overall design. Ashley and I started with new paint and then decided to take down the wanes coating. Once we added the new carpet and tile from Showcase Flooring, we had the wet bar installed. Then came the final touches we are talking about today." How long did the whole design process take to plan? Adam: "We worked on the wet bar together, but the surprise with Trever Hill Design started with a Facebook message in October, just to see what the process was. We touched base again the beginning of December and that's when Trever really dug into the look we wanted. We had the furniture and everything shipped to the house on January 29 where the design team was there to finish everything in one day. They are truly an amazing crew to work with. They helped me move old furniture out and then took control of the creation Trever had in his head. There were many items that were actually surprises for me as well."

TIPS YOUR OWN SPACE

FROM TREVER 1. Keep in mind, some stores get 50-60 percent off of wholesale pricing due to their bigger buying power. So, sometimes it’s best to shop the boutique stores to find just the right piece and sometimes we go big to get the great deal. 2. Never let a large piece of furniture be a barrier when you walk into a space, always try to keep an open flow and draw the eye into the room. 3. To keep the room flowing, add accent chairs with a minimal footprint and low backs. Adding seating but not taking away from the focal point when you walk into the room is important.

CNC Wood Design started with Kevin Cochran and Dustin Clark looking for a new journey to embark on. The father and son were eager to do almost anything when they stumbled across Northern Wood Specialties out of Park Rapids, Minn. With Cochran getting ready to retire from a full-time sales job and Clark having prior experience in the construction industry, they knew they had found something that fit the bill perfectly with their strengths and passions.

TURNING ENTERTAINMENT TABLE This entertainment table is made out of oak, and can be turned to fit nicely in a corner or spread out along a lengthy wall.

IN WITH THE NEW In December of 2013, along with the help of Clark’s wife, CNC Wood Design was purchased as an LLC and business was under way. The previous owner of the business had built up a solid customer base and reputation in Park Rapids over 25 years that aided CNC’s transition into the business, so Cochran and Clark still reference themselves as doing business as Northern Wood Specialties in order to take advantage of the great reputation and the history it’s created. “The former business had a great customer base so it has been nice that we didn’t have to totally start from scratch,” Clark said. “I feel that this is a business where we will continually learn. Although the initial cost of it all was not a lot, learning can cost a lot sometimes.”

“I knew right away that I wanted to do slab furniture. Both of us had lived on the West Coast and it was really popular out there, so we signed some papers and bought some slabs and went to work on them,” said Cochran. “From there we just kept doing other pieces and kept thinking, ‘We can do that.’”

CORKWOOD BENCH CNC stands for computer numerical control, and is a tool that creates unique 3D objects from wood through computer designs. The possibilities of furniture design with this machine are essentially endless. An example of this machine’s work is on one of CNC’s benches featured in their showroom. The tree design along the sides of the Japanese corkwood bench is a beautiful example of the engraving that’s possible with the CNC machine.

Slab furniture consists of using the middle part of the tree, which is a trait commonly seen in the company’s products. They have built a variety of home entertainment designs, tables, chairs, lamps, wall art, benches and are dedicated to fulfilling all types of requests from customers. The same goes for their custom cabinetry and laminate work.

Clark and Cochran have established a new wave of services throughout the business that set them apart from typical wood companies. Although the company used to focus strictly on cabinets, the father and son decided that they wanted to expand with unique furniture and home design. CORKWOOD COAT RACK This coat rack is made of Japanese corkwood, which is what gives it the bright yellow interior section along the outline of the piece. Pieces with the live bark still on the wood are featured in the showroom as well. 49

“We get in with cabinets and end up doing custom furniture for that customer as well, or it’s the other way around,” said Clark. The duo have tackled a number of cabinetry projects that also include bars and preserving pieces that customers bring in to them. “We frequently have materials that are brought in by customers that they have had in previous homes or places, and we’ve been able to construct those items into new designs because customers have such emotional attachments to them,” said Cochran.

WELCOME TO FARGO With the continuous increase in business from the FargoMoorhead area, Clark and Cochran knew it was necessary to have a base in this community. In December 2014, just one year after establishing their company, CNC Wood Design opened a design center and showroom in the lower level of the Black Building in Downtown Fargo. Their space in Downtown Fargo has been a success by bringing in customers for design consultations and by word of mouth. Although their production headquarters remains in Park Rapids, the two claim that business works well with having a special design center in a separate city.

“We start a lot of deals and projects here, so we’ll continue to use this space as a design center as more work in Fargo happens,” Cochran said. “But we’ll always take advantage of the crew in Park Rapids who have been with us and the previous owner for many years. As of right now, there’s no need to expand that elsewhere and production works well with where it’s at now.”

They will continue to work on timeless furniture pieces for clients, and Clark claims he is always looking for a challenge when it comes to furniture design. That challenge has recently been presented to him with the request of a wooden sink, which is something he’s been excitedly doing research on. “We can definitely build it, it’s just a matter of the finish really. How will we make it beautiful for years to come?” said Clark. “If someone asked me to build a car out of wood I’d be like ‘Yeah, let’s try and make it happen!’ Nothing is really going to hold me back in regards to what we can and can’t do. Challenges just make me try harder.”

As you can see from these sketches by Chris Hawley Architect, small exterior changes to the very same floor plan can make each house look unique and keep it within the classic theme, often within the same budget. These are just a few of the altered two-story exterior designs that are possible: contemporary colonial, modern agrarian and prairie school, all of which remain indigenous to this rural-themed community. A Team Effort Spearheading the Rocking Horse Farm development are owners Ken and Jan Promersberger, with the guidance of consultant Lloyd Anderson and The Promersberger Company managing director, Craig Anderson. Bryan Harjes of Minneapolis’ HKGi created the master plan, along with Mike Love from Houston Engineering. Land Elements is working on some natural design elements with the Fargo Park District and Prairie Restoration. Chris Hawley Architect is providing Rocking Horse Farm with specific exterior housing design guidance for builders and homeowners alike.

or many, the idea of building a new home can seem scary, overwhelming and out of reach. The endless options, upgrades, blueprints and planning can mystify even the most intelligent of buyers. Facing this fear head-on, Design & Living teamed up with local builder Jordahl Custom Homes and went on an up-close-and-personal tour of the building process. With over 15 years of building experience, Jordahl was ready to squash some myths and prove that building a new home doesn't need to be complicated. Following first-time home builders Amanda and Chris Voss, we tagged along on their 90-day journey to create their new home.

PRE-PLANNING Before we start walking you through the build, pre-planning is a must. Amanda and Chris had previously met with the Jordahl sales team to go over budgets, lots, floor plans and layouts. The couple had met with their banker to determine their budget and loan amount in advance. The sales team and project managers at Jordahl will be their liaison through each step until closing. They will help the buyers choose their development, lot and style of home within their budget.

FINDING THE RIGHT NEIGHBORHOOD

CHOOSING A PLAN TO FIT THEIR NEEDS

To find the right neighborhood, The Vosses found out what lots were available and then drove around until they found a neighborhood they felt comfortable in. Their goal was to find someplace they could picture raising their family. Choosing Shadow Wood for their new home, the Vosses then decided on their customized plan based on the size and layout of the lot.

At this point the Vosses are able to discuss their needs and any wanted upgrades or revisions to their house plans. Due in June with their first child, the Vosses wanted a clean, simple and functional space for their growing family. They also needed to have room for entertaining and ample space in the garage. For a builder like Jordahl, there are around 25 different house plans to choose from and each can be customized. Costs are then summarized for the buyer and a drafter makes custom prints for the home to help make the must-have features a reality.

It's early November and the Vosses have chosen their development, lot and house plan. Now it's time to decide on finishes. For the options and finishes, Jordahl has the Vosses meet in their Design Center with their interior designers, Katie Kern and Caitlin Krueger. The designers will walk them through each needed material by showing them an array of cabinetry, hardware, countertops, doors and trim, giving advice and tips when needed. For many home builders, there are endless design options available, but to make the decisions easier, Jordahl will do the leg work and present the most popular and trending options at the time. In Jordahl's Design Center, the Vosses can look at and choose from an ample selection of real samples and coordinate them in one place with the help of Kern and Krueger as their own personal designers. Meeting with the designers, the Vosses will have further planning meetings to discuss exterior selections, flooring and interior selections.

TIP: If you’re someone who is easily overwhelmed with the design process, make it easy on yourself and the designers. Search the Web and magazines for examples of rooms you would like to emulate in your own home and bring them to the design meeting.

STARTING THE BUILD By Thanksgiving, the Vosses new home is off to a great start with the hole dug for the basement, concrete poured and walls framed in. Sheetrocking the walls will get started on Dec. 22 and run through Jan. 2. During the start of the build, the Vosses will also meet with representatives at the appliance and lighting stores to choose these options.

ELECTRICAL WALK-THROUGH Once the home has been framed, the Vosses will do an electrical walk-though on Dec. 15, the last step in the selection process. They get to meet with the electrician and designer on site to physically walk through the house and choose the placement of outlets, switches, light fixtures and more. This gives them a chance to ask any questions and really know the placement and features are going to work for their home. “This is an exciting part of the process, as often times this is the first time the homeowners get to walk through the house and are getting to see their vision become reality,” says Breanne Balstad of Jordahl Custom Homes. 97

TIP:  If you’re not fond of reading blueprints, some builders like Jordahl have model and staged homes you can go see in person before making a decision.

WALL WORK A visit to the house on Jan. 8 finds the sheetrock complete, with tape, mud, texture and paint also done. To get done efficiently, there is one crew that does the hanging of the sheetrock and another crew that does the taping, texturing and painting. For this build, the Vosses opted to do their own accent painting. This is done before the flooring, cabinets and tile go in the following week. Today the crew works to prep the floor for the under lament and luxury vinyl tile to go in.

"With both of our jobs being so busy, we didn't have the time to do the updates that it would take in existing homes. We really wanted something that would be low maintenance and easy to care for. We looked at a lot of houses over the course of years and just was not able to find exactly what we wanted. So, we thought that our only option would be to build." - Amanda Voss

INTERIOR DETAILS On Jan. 25, we can see the exterior siding is now on. On the interior, great progress is also being made with the laminate flooring installed, tile fireplace and reclaimed wood wall complete. All walls are now painted; trim, doors and the lighting is also complete. Appliances are not ready to be installed, but will be within days.

FINAL WALK-THROUGH Not even two weeks later on Feb. 11, Jordahl has completed the home and it’s ready for the final walk-through. This is an exciting time to see their new home and walk through with a project manager to make sure everything is completed to their liking. Before handing over the keys, Jordahl even offers up helpful advice on how to take care of and maintain their new home’s functions like furnace, water and electrical. If the Vosses experience issues with their new home or finishes, Jordahl’s Service Team is there for the homeowner for after-the-close customer service.

FOYER With the stairway to the downstairs near their main entrance, the designers chose a more custom approach to the typical stair railings. Steel powder coating and stained poplar railings were designed to take a more modern and decorative approach. A luxury vinyl plank in a gray tone was chosen for the flooring throughout the main level of 2,025 square feet. Key décor pieces were found at Aartisan Home Design with entrance chandelier by Ferguson.

FAMILY ROOM: “One thing that was really important to Amanda, she wanted this to be all windows looking out to the pond view. But to do one big window, you risk losing heat. So we framed it with narrow strips in the center to make it look like one continuous window,” explained Kern. Beyond the pond, a bigger design feature in the family room is the custom reclaimed wood accent wall above the fireplace. The lower half was designed in a contrasting limestone in a vertical, linear pattern. Much of the furniture and décor for the home was found at Aartisan Home Design.

KITCHEN “When we entertain, it seems like everyone is always in the kitchen, so I really wanted this area to be a big focal point in the house,” said Amanda Voss. The Vosses included details like the textured glass tile backsplash, quartz island and perimeter with alder cabinetry, stained in a darker peppercorn wash spanning nine feet of the 10foot ceilings. A walk-in pantry, large under-mount sink and oversized pendants from Ferguson complete the look.

How did you arrange to bring Chip and Joanna to Fargo? “We were originally searching to bring in a big name from HGTV to our other event, Junk Market. We knew if we wanted to bring a big name here, we needed to make sure our image was solid, so we made sure our Facebook page and website were looking good. We needed them to see that this was a good company. Then we called around and started asking questions. Last April when “Fixer Upper” came on I said, ‘That’s the couple.’ I watched a couple episodes

and I thought, ‘Now that’s the kind of people we want.’ Once we knew they fit, then I started talking to them via social media so they knew who Eco Chic was. Recently they held a workshop and we went to that so we could get one-on-one time with them. From there we contacted her people.” Did you expect that people would be this excited to attend? “We had been researching for over a year and had teased it on our Facebook page asking the question of who they wanted to see the most. Easily the biggest response was for Chip and Joanna. After we actually met them, we really knew. We did expect this kind of excitement and now it’s looking like we will be sold out within the first three weeks after announcing it.” Recently you attended Chip and Joanna's workshop. What was it like to meet them? "We met Chip as he welcomed everyone to the workshop. The very first thing I noticed is that they were actually just as nice in person as they were on TV. They don't put onairs, it felt like you were walking into a family event. Then we got to meet Joanna; we had talked a little bit on social media so she knew that the Fargo girls were coming. We visited briefly with both but didn't discuss the event quite yet; we knew it would seem pushy. We wanted to meet them, get a feel for who they are, what they do and make sure we were on the same page. They are doing two, possibly three inperson appearances this year and that's it other than what HGTV has them do."

a full day of workshops, learning and socializing." What kind of things will Chip and Joanna be talking about? "I can't tell you much quite yet, but they will be sharing their story, background and family life. There will be a Q&A and Joanna will talk about her decorating style. We really want people to experience them in person and face-to-face; the rest you'll have to wait and see." How did Chip and Joanna get their own show on HGTV? "A blogger had featured a kitchen that Joanna had done. Shortly after, a production company called Pie Town Productions contacted them from overseas. Thinking it was a joke or scam, they thought they'd call back just for the heck of it and turns out they wanted to come and shoot them for TV. Pie Town then pitched it to HGTV and was denied 10 times. Finally it was agreed to give Pie Town $5,000 to go and spend a week following their work and film what Pie Town thought they were. HGTV had earlier felt she appeared cold on camera and he seemed goofy; they didn't feel like they could take them seriously. So they spent this whole week filming, pitched it again and the network said they finally saw what Pie Town was talking about. Their show "Fixer Upper" began airing last April." Can the public still get tickets for this event? "Yes! We thought we sold out right away, but just got word that we are able to add on more seating. So, as of today, we have 70 more general admission seats.”

Can you explain a day at the first ever Eco Design Conference? "It starts at 2 p.m. with three hourlong DIY workshops. We will be talking about furniture painting, Grain Designs will be there and Carrie's going to be talking about decorating. This will be a day of learning and interacting. There will be cookies, treats and desserts. Then we go into the evening with cocktails and appetizers with Chip and Joanna coming on at 7 p.m. It's

s an owner of Furniture for Less in West Fargo and Moorhead, Darrell Hansen is the first to tell you that his home décor is forever evolving. Many homeowners spend years with the same décor, but in his industry it’s out with the old and in with the new. Taking in the Parade of Homes last year, Hansen had no intention of building a house until he met Alan Hochhalter, architect and owner of Building Concepts. Finding a design that piqued his interest, the two ventured out that day to see one of Hochhalter’s lots nearby in Osgood. A short time later, a plan was set to break ground in late fall. Completed just last month, Hansen now has the golf course view and the house designed to frame in and capture the landscape to a T. In the entry, walnut ceiling details are carried out to the exterior soffit for a warm addition to the modern exterior. On the interior, Hanson’s home is suited perfectly to the golf course terrain, using a unique corner window design to capture exceptional views. “Stand in the dining room or the master and you can see the inspiration for the corner windows; it’s a view with no interference,” says Hochhalter. With a view to the north, Hochhalter designed the home to let natural light in from the south. To do this, he used tall vertical windows behind the stairway, then opened up the stairway to let the light through to the living space. This trick of the trade also helps light up the lower level at the same time.

In the family room, walnut floors warm up the 16foot ceilings with hallow constructed walnut beams. A major focal point of the room is the tile mantel with inset lighting feature by Building Concepts designer Karen Freberg. “The idea with the color is that for things like St. Patty’s Day I would change it to green. Valentine’s Day I put red on. So that’s the idea behind the color changes,” Hansen explained.

Entertaining is made easy with this open layout kitchen with six-foot windows placed from counter to ceiling for maximizing light. A gorgeous walnut bar helps to add warmth to the contemporary taupe and gray painted cabinetry. Taupe and white quartz countertops work nicely to give contrast to the space with modern display nooks and wine fridge.

"Since I have a furniture store, I don't have just one taste. I can appreciate contemporary and traditional. I came from a home with a very traditional style. I loved it, but for this home I really wanted to do something different. We went very contemporary, but I feel it's a comfortable and warm contemporary." -Darrell Hansen

A major focal point in the house that is impossible to overlook is this Peter Lik photograph. This massive framed art piece can be seen from the front door or walking up to the second level. To tell you just how popular this Australian artist is, one of Lik’s photographs recently sold for an impressive $6.5 million, setting a new world record. This single wood cut came in from California at roughly 14-15 feet long. Local artist Steve Revland crafted the piece into this stunning 12-foot bar with exposed grain that overlooks the theater seating. 113

“The golf course had this knoll on top, so if you’re just standing on the lot, you can’t see the green or the fairway; it’s somewhat hidden behind the hill. Darrell wanted to be able to see a nice view of the fairway, so that’s why we put the master bedroom upstairs with a walk-out deck.” Alan Hochhalter, Building Concepts

On the upper level, Hansen and Hochhalter designed the master bedroom with its own walkout and windows to maximize the golf course view below. A unique wall alcove for the bed was designed with a subtle wallpaper to give the space even more depth. Going with a more masculine design, Hansen chose a modern take on the propeller emulated in the ceiling fan and artwork from his store. At the foot of the bed, Hansen accessorized with retro, armless lounge chairs. To focus more on the architecture within the room, sloped ceiling heights were put at 14 feet with the addition of beams for interest. Warm walnut flooring is once again used in a three and five-inch alternating board.

MOVING ON UP LINDA LAMMERS is a certified relocation and transition specialist and the owner and operator of CHANGE IS GOOD, a professional moving and downsizing company. Her company provides specialized services to assist those 55 years and older with later-life moves in order to make the moving process something that isn’t completely dreaded. Lammers sat down with us to express how passionate she is about her business, and how she will never hesitate to go out of her way for her clients. By Erica Rapp | Photo by J. Alan Paul Photography

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? “My name is Linda Lammers, I own Change is Good and I help older people with later-life moves. In the event that they want to either stay where they are and they need help with the downsizing process or in the event that they are moving – I can help with that entire process. It’s anywhere from helping them with downsizing and sorting out stuff to doing the packing for them. I also do the floor plans,

so I go into where they’re going to be living and measure out everything down to the half inch. We also help them pack up and we arrange the movers. I’m also at both sites the day of the move and we also resettle them as well.” What is it in your background that led you to start and operate this business? “I’ve always been able to see what to do first, second and third. About 10 years ago

now, my parents moved. I’m the oldest of five and we all had our different ways of helping them move and my mom and dad had not moved in 50 years. We didn’t know what we were doing and they didn’t know what they were doing. So, I saw the chaos that happened with people when faced with moving out of the home and how hard it is on the family. I thought to myself that there was a niche here, and that there was a real need for something

like this for people 55 and older. I’ve been doing this now for about eight years and I really enjoy it.” You’re a certified relocation and transition specialist. Is that required for this business or is there other special training you have to do? “You don’t have to be certified, but I decided to be. I’m also a member of the National

Association of Senior Move Managers. I went ahead and got certified for the credentials and I think it really helps out. If we’re going to be dealing with mom and dad’s coin collection, or their china or any other private things they may have, I’m sure the kids are wondering who in the world is helping mom and dad. So that just gives me a credential that says I’m in this for the long haul, and it’s just not a passing thing for me. I’m fully insured as well, so I truly care about what I do and have the credentials to back it up.” You have a team that helps you with all of this; what is that like? “I have six people that help me out on a parttime basis, so we can come in and do the packing and moving very efficiently. It depends on the size of the job for how many people I bring in, and I still oversee every job that happens.” We had to reschedule a few times after things came up for you, so what is a typical day like for you with things being so chaotic sometimes? “It really varies. Just from seeing people for the first time and explaining what we’re all about, to actually doing the move and doing the packing to dropping stuff off for donation. If someone is looking to do an auction or an estate sale, I also line up meetings with those given people for the client to see which way they’d like to go. So I really help them with the whole process. Depending on the day I might be taking things to recycling, I might be helping somebody move or I might be packing boxes. It can really vary and every day is totally different.” When we spoke beforehand you said you were working on packing a shed-full of boxes to be shipped. Is that sort of daunting task something that you do often? “No, it’s not something I do often. I really go with what the client needs. That’s what I do. If they need things shipped to their kids, I arrange for that to happen. If they need things brought to a donation site, recycled or even need a cleaning crew to come in I can make those things happen as well. I do a lot of extra things that many people may not know about.” What are some of the challenges or rewarding aspects with this job? “If people are dealing with issues such as dementia or other related illnesses, that tends to make things a little trickier because they can’t

remember what they’ve told us before. Usually in situations like that there will be a family member there to help take care of things. Those situations tend to be the trickiest, but they can also be the most rewarding because those families just cannot do it by themselves. The fact that we can duplicate somebody’s current home into their new surroundings and have it look the same – that’s the most rewarding part. It’s great to see the family and the clients walk in at the end of the day and be happy with what they see. We’ll have the beds made, the televisions plugged in, the bathrooms (in) operation, the boxes will be gone and everything is all set up for them.” That sounds like a wonderful aspect for the client, especially with moving being one of the most stressful things in life. “Yes. It’s nice because we can take care of the stuff while the family takes care of the health issues, of whatever it may be. We just take that chaos out of the moving process for them. Nobody wants to stare at all of those boxes; it can make you feel out of place or homeless.” Do you do any other types of moves or do you tend to stick with older ages? “I have just focused on the over-aged. The younger crowd tends to want to do all of the packing and all that sort of stuff themselves, but I would do something for anyone if they were relocating or something like that. But my expertise is in the older ages.” It only makes sense to start a business like this. It’s quite common for everybody to downsize later in life. “Exactly. Families get busy or they’re just not around anymore to help out. Sometimes people will go out to a condo or a new living situation and think about relocating there. Then they’ll go home and look at all of the stuff they have and won’t know where to start, so they just end up staying where they are even though it may not be the best place for them.” Do you have anything you’d like our readers to know? “We just really take care of the client and the family. There are times when we bring them breakfast. There are times when we make them coffee. There are times when we remind them to eat. Things like that where we add a real personal element to moves such as this.”

How is your first visit to Fargo? “Loving Fargo! It took about 26 hours for my toes unthaw from the time I got here. I had to sit in the rental car and wait for it to warm up. But honestly they started to freeze after one minute because my body just isn’t used to this type of weather. I think I’m an honorary Fargoan now: I actually have not been wearing my gloves or my hat.” (laughs)

Favorite thing you’ve seen at the show? “The saunas are awesome! My husband wants a sauna and we’re getting ready to have our sixth anniversary. Tomorrow when they’re breaking down, before they leave I’m going to enter into some negotiations.” 126
