SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP If you love to shop but loathe the endless searching, this local shopping guide is for you. We scavenged the stores and found only the pieces we thought worthy of a page. We’ll show you some of our great handmade, heartfelt and drop-dead gorgeous gifts and décor. Along the way, we’ll show you some new furniture that will help spruce up the space around your spruce tree and prep for family gatherings.

LUXE LIVING For the big finale of our shopping guide, don’t miss a page of our luxury finds. Buyer beware, these are some of the biggest toys for only the most generous of shoppers.

100 DIY WITH ECO CHIC Once again, Maria Bosak shares her DIY talents and tips for holiday design. Create a stunning holiday table runner from an unlikely fabric and learn the art of gold gilding to bring some bling to your place settings.

ON THE COVER The statement piece, Hypertrophic, by artist Casey Hockhalter can be found locally at ecce gallery in downtown Fargo. Hypertrophic was part of a body of work that was funded by the Northern Clay Center and the Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grant.

Hypertrophic 2011 ceramic, acrylic, gravel, and sand

ecce gallery 216 Broadway N, Fargo 6

The project involved the experimentation and use of unconventional ceramic surfaces and a variety of materials. According to the artist, the objective was

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • D E C E M BE R 2 014

to make surface textures that suggest the presence of an interaction or interchange between a living being and its environment. Intense colors that seem unlikely to be found in nature were used. These seemingly artificial colors were chosen to distance the sculptures from any hint of literal representation of real life-forms. The surfaces have a quality that implies a passage of time, making history and aging evident in the sculptures.

NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE Get ready for our upcoming Ultimate Home Issue for January/February. JOYFUL HOME T

his month, we once again celebrate the wonder and joy of the holiday season.

AT YOUR REQUEST LAST MONTH’S COVER SHOT

We have many blessings to be thankful for, including our family and friends, wonderful readers and valuable contributors. As we all prepare to face another hectic holiday of family gatherings, gift giving and ultimately a little extra stress, we hope you find peace and take the time to enjoy the beauty of the season. To give you a little more time to do just that, we’ve compiled this local shopping guide to help you navigate the store front stress with ease. As many of you know, with any of our shopping guides we tend to place priority on local businesses, and for good reason. Local businesses and their owners are the heart and soul of our community and one of our greatest assets. So when you head out with your shopping list in hand, please consider the local businesses and the one-of-a-kind treasures you might find. Challenge yourself to change your way of thinking and maybe leave the crowds at the big box stores. Put down your mouse, take a break from online browsing and instead explore what’s right under your nose. For those who long for a home with a little more seasonal spirit, make sure to view our holiday shopping pages filled with the latest in décor and accents. We also see a festive table top designed by local business Eco Chic Boutique, and crash a lunchbox seminar focused on capturing the magic of the season. Next month, with anticipation of the February HBA’s Red River Valley Home and Garden Show, we’ve started work on our Ultimate Home issue. This issue will focus on all aspects of the home, from new builds with all the bells and whistles to dramatic remodels. We view some spectacular new features and take you into one of the most technologically-advanced homes in our area. From our family to yours, we wish you the warmest of holiday seasons where your greatest gifts are the family you spend it with. Happy Holidays from all of us at Design & Living!

If you were one of the many who wanted to know more about last month’s bedroom cover shot, you’re in luck. Our Oct./Nov. bedroom cover

shot is from the home of Kelly Lankow and Nate Bruce on Fifth Street in Moorhead. The owners, along with decorator Trever Hill of Home Suite Couture, opted to use the home’s 1882 history and glamour to create an updated Neo Classic design. One of the oldest homes in Moorhead, this was once the home of James O’Rourke. The architectural style of the home is Italianate. The bedding is from Target, along with decorative pillows from a mixture of places that include Pier 1, Scheels, TJMaxx and other stores. The bed is a special order Magnussen set from Scheels Home & Hardware. Benjamin Moore wall color in Sweatshirt Gray was used and accents on the corner stand were found at Home Goods. The built-ins on the left are used for towels, décor and shoes. There is also a hallway leading into the two room suite that includes a double vanity, washer/dryer and bathroom with tiled shower. To the right of the photo there is an additional room that was converted into a walk-in closet. Photo by J. Alan Paul Photography

HBA DESIGN & LIVING

HBA PRESENTS HONORS AT AWARDS GALA & ANNUAL MEETING, HOME & GARDEN SHOW COMING SOON By Bryce Johnson, HBA of F-M Executive Vice President

The Red River Valley Home & Garden Show will be here before we know it! Slated for Feb. 27, 28 and March 1 at the Fargodome, it will again feature more than 330 exhibitors, including the largest selection of home and garden exhibits in the region. This year we welcome Kimberly Lacy, project manager on HGTV’s Curb Appeal, to present seminars on simple curb appeal tips, planning a yard makeover, and properly phasing renovation projects — determining which are do-it-yourself, and which require a professional. Interested in exhibiting at the show or simply learning more? Visit www.hbafm.com or contact the HBA at (701) 232-5846.

T

he Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead is a volunteer-driven trade organization serving the home building industry and consisting of over 800 Builder, Associate and Affiliate members. At our October Awards Gala & Annual Meeting, we recognized members who go above and beyond for our Association and community: Builder and Associate of the Year are our highest honors. Judged by a committee of past award winners and current staff, they are meant to recognize one outstanding Builder member and one outstanding Associate member for effort and work expended in the interest of his or her fellow members, Association and community. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Carlita Dietz, Jay Dietz Construction, Inc., and Robin Swanson, Superior Insurance. (pictured above) The BEAM Award was given to Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., for the second year in a row. BEAM stands for Builders Engaging Associate Members and the honor recognizes Builder members who exemplify the motto “it’s good business to do business with a member.” The teamwork that exists between Builders and their trade partners who are HBA of FM members is vitally important. A staff-selected honor, the Extra Mile Award went to Josh Amundson, FM Home & Patio, Inc., because of volunteerism and willingness 14

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • D E C E M BE R 2 014

to work behind-the-scenes to assist the HBA staff and help make events happen. It is members like him, who will do some of the less-glamorous event tasks like magazinestand deliveries and traffic control, that make the HBA function. Spike awards, recognizing members’ outstanding commitment to member recruitment and retention, went to the following: • Top New Spike was presented to Aubrey Costello, Showplace Kitchens, for moving from a Spike Club Candidate to a Spike Club Member with the most Spike credits. • Top Spike award was given to Todd Halvorson, Rigel’s, for garnering the most Spike credits. • Top Recruiter Award was given to Darrick Guthmiller, Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., for recruiting the most new members. Congratulations to all the winners! You deserve to be commended.

Bryce Johnson is the HBA of F-M’s executive vice president. She has been with the Association for 24 years. She and her husband, Wade, have three children and live in north Fargo.

The Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead promotes an environment in which members and their businesses can prosper.

Q&A DESIGN & LIVING

Q&A with Hannah Leichtenberg

TO GET OUR CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING, we crashed Design Consultant Hannah Leichtenberg’s seasonal seminar at Scheels Home & Hardware. Leichtenberg addressed the latest trends and gave us some stress-free solutions for holiday décor. By Tracy Nicholson Photography by J. Alan Paul Photography

DESIGN & LIVING

Q&A

Leichtenberg demonstrating holiday garland ideas at the Scheels Home & Hardware Lunchbox seminar.

What are some of your favorite décor tips from your holiday seminar? “Don’t just decorate your tree, sprinkle Christmas throughout by taking down your usual pictures and changing them out. Add garland and ornaments or wreaths to mirrors, light fixtures and lamp shades. Don’t forget unexpected areas such as bathrooms, bedrooms and laundry/mudrooms. Even if you and your family are the only ones who will see these areas of your home, why not deck them out for Christmas.”

What are some trends in trees? “Almost anything goes, from traditional red and green to funkier versions with whimsical tones like orange and turquoise. Other popular trends are vintage, reclaimed wood and metal mixes.”

57

DESIGN & LIVING

Q&A

Leichtenberg says anything goes for these fun accents right now. We’re seeing variations like burlap, felt, wood, metal, wool and even the glitzy.

This nativity set is a great example of how the mix of reclaimed wood and metal can give traditional holiday accents a modern twist.

What is a good solution for sentimental ornaments and children’s projects? “You can still have one perfectly coordinated tree, but at our house we do two different trees. My boys have their own to display their ornaments and they get to help decorate this tree. You definitely have to use the pieces that mean something to your family.”

When do you recommend putting up your holiday décor? “I never put anything up until the day after Thanksgiving. That’s just the way I grew up. But, I have found that here we only get in limited quantities of our holiday décor, so I would recommend shopping for décor much sooner, in September or October.”

No holiday would be complete without a little DIY magic. To add some dazzle to our dinner table, we went to one of the area’s best, Maria Bosak, owner of Eco Chic Boutique. Bosak walked us through two simple DIY projects, a table runner with an organic holiday flair and gold gilded glasses to bring in some bling. By Tracy Nicholson Photos by J. Alan Paul Photography

HOLIDAY TABLE RUNNER WHAT YOU’LL NEED

• Paint drop cloth You can find this at any hardware or home improvement store. • Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® For this project, Bosak used a mix of Emperor’s Silk and Burgundy • Blue painter’s tape • Scissors to trim

GET STARTED

1

Lay the oversized drop cloth on a long table, then fold over the vertical sides to come up to where you would like your runner stripes to be. This will protect the cloth around your lines from paint splatters or smudges.

• Chalk paint brush

TIPS OF THE TRADE This is an 18-inch runner that is made for a four-foot table allowing for six inches off the edge. Bosak made sure to cut the drop cloth much bigger than needed at the start. When it’s done, you can then fold it right down the center and trim it to the width you need. Need it clean after the holidays? Bosak recommended washing the finished runner by hand or spot cleaning to avoid running it through the washer.

2

Run blue painter’s tape down the drop cloth in varying widths as desired.

We liked the look of English flower sacks, but they are usually expensive. Since we wanted to go for that same linen grain sack look, we realized that our paint drop cloths are almost the same texture and color.” Maria Bosak Eco Chic Boutique

WHAT IS CHALK PAINT?

3

Use your chalk paint brush to dab small amounts of paint between the lines of your painter’s tape. (Make sure to not drench your brush in paint to avoid over saturating the cloth and tape.) There is no need for a sealer or wax with this type of project. Let dry for 20 minutes or wait until is dry to the touch.

4

Peel the painters tape off slowly.

5

Most everyone has at least heard of Chalk Paint by now, but many still don’t know what it is. Chalk Paint® was made specifically for painting furniture, floors and to give walls a matte, velvet-like finish. This paint comes in 30 decorative and historical colors. What makes it so great for DIY pros is that it sticks to just about any surface – wood, concrete, metal, matte plastic, earthenware and much more. This paint dries fast, so you can add second or third coats quickly. Another important part of this line is the Soft Wax, which can help you achieve subtle sheen with protection and durability when painting furniture.

Fold the protective pieces of fabric on the sides of the painted lines back, then trim to size. To give it a more polished look after trimming, hem the runner a half inch in. See finished table setting on page 106

GOLD GILDING WINE GLASSES GET STARTED

1

Get a small dab of gilding wax on your finger and slowly smooth around the edges of the glass with your desired thickness. The wax will be thick so try to go slow.

2

Use a towel to clean up any mistakes in the gilding process or a razor blade if the project has already dried. Dry time generally takes around two minutes so it is beneficial to work fast. See finished table setting on page 106

WHAT YOU’LL NEED • Gilding Wax in Brass by Cire a dorer Lefranc Bourgeois (Find this at Eco Chic Boutique) • Any desired glassware

TIPS OF THE TRADE Gilding wax is a great putty-like tool for adding glamour to glass products as well as adding depth to furniture or cabinets. You can also use a small brush if desired. Once completely dry, you can drink out of these but it is recommended to hand wash gently.

WHAT IS GILDING? Gilding is essentially a decorative technique for applying fine gold leaf or powder to solid surfaces like wood, stone or metal to give a thin coating of gold. Methods of gilding generally include hand application, gluing, gold plating and chemical gilding, Variations include gold, copper, bronze, silver brass and pearl.

ECO CHIC BOUTIQUE

Eco Chic Boutique showcased their drop cloth runner and gold gilding DIY projects for this year’s Holiday Homes of Hope Tour.

Carrie Brusven and Maria Bosak created this rustic glam look with their DIY runner, classic topiary trees, antique glassware and personalized napkin rings fashioned with red and white twine. Place settings are adorned with gold chargers and gold rimmed white plates. These subtle hues are carried throughout the home and coordinate with the red, black and gold throughout the home’s holiday design. The rustic dining room table was built by Eco Chic’s own Scott Brusven and painted with Pure White Chalk Paint® then lightly distressed with a sanding block. Mismatched dining chairs found at auctions are painted to match the table and recovered with the same drop cloth material and painted stripes as the runner.
