Margo style means that it is modern with a lot of statement pieces like dramatic lighting, one of a kind dining tables and this amazing glass kitchen island. We use a lot of espresso and white for our color scheme with glass and rock accents throughout. For the downstairs, some great LED lighting is featured in the game room, theater and bar area. HBA EDITORIAL DESIGN & LIVING

HBA Reminds Consumers... With yard trends like stone, contour, and fire pits, don’t forget the importance of regular maintenance. IN THE FM AREA, our prime time for hanging out in the yard is short and highly coveted. Homeowners do everything they can to maximize it earlier into the spring and later into the fall. They create yards that are an extension of their homes and an additional room for them to live and play. By Carlita Dietz

The HBA of FM has many gardening and landscaping members who are experts in the art of making your “yard a home.” Here are some of the top trends:

1

FIREPLACES, BARS, GRILLS AND FIRE PITS In high-end homes, yards can sometimes include an outdoor kitchen for entertaining. The heat sources and cooking areas allow owners to spend more time outside in the fall and spring and provide the perfect setting for socializing.

2

PRIVACY No matter the yard size, home owners relish alone-time and are being creative with the use of berms, trees, shrubs and lattice or decorative fencing. Even in 55-and-over communities, landscapers see residents wanting privacy and personalization within limited space. Contractors put in heavilyplanted courtyards and personalized little gardens to suit the homeowner.

3

STONE, DÉCOR AND CONTOUR Just as our indoor homes feature items reflecting our personalities, so do yards. Large, chunky rocks and boulders add interest, as well as techniques like areas alternating mulch and rock, or using rocks that are striking colors. Low voltage lights and water features help create an atmosphere. Stepping stones, gravel paths and flat natural stone slabs create designated walking areas to enjoy the yard. Since our landscape is flat here,

CARLITA DIETZ Carlita Dietz is 2014 president of the HBA of FM’s board of directors. She serves as vice president of Jay Dietz Construction, Inc., and has been a realtor since 2000 with licenses in both North Dakota and Minnesota. She and her husband, Jay, live in Mapleton, N.D., and have three children.

we’ve also seen bridges and berms included to add some topography.

4

PLANTINGS People are using anything and everything! They incorporate plantings that aren’t native to the area or hardy in our environment. Home owners will plant them in the summer knowing they will not come back. One area landscaper even saw a banana tree placed in the yard for a conversation piece. Owners will use perennials along with annual plantings. In container gardening, mixing perennials and annuals has become popular for different effects and more colorful combinations. They will also incorporate elaborate trees and shrubs, including topiaries, which are clipped and trimmed into decorative shapes. The trends aside, yard experts stress that maintenance is everything when it comes to your yard. Replace overgrown plants. Prune existing healthy plants. Keep your yard green and weed free. Replace poorly installed edging and freshen up your ground cover. It’s important for your yard to last as long as possible with the least amount of upkeep, all while enhancing the architectural value of your home.

WHAT IS THE HBA? The mission of the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead is to provide quality services, benefits and education to our members and the community. Striving to be a visible and proactive influence, the association represents the collective interests of the home building industry.

ARTIST

SUSANNE WILLIAMS designer

Ask Susanne Williams what she’s best known for, and she will surely say her leather handbag line, Willi Nilli. Once the line took off several years ago, she knew she had found a unique niche. But as wholesale demand increased, so did the repetition. “After a while it got to the point that I was exhausted and not happy all the time with every piece that I turned out, yet the deadlines were very rigid in doing that kind of industry,” Williams said. She felt stifled, and what she needed was a break. She decided to take a step back. “‘Okay, well, what am I doing here?’” she asked herself. “’This is my own business. I’ve got to make the decisions here as to whether I’m happy or not and I need to make a change.’” The perfect break arose last year when friend and fellow artist Steve Revland approached Williams with the idea of opening The Uptown Gallery in downtown Fargo. Months of planning, a major renovation and two grand openings later, her creative juices are flowing once again. “Making bags is what people know me for. I’m able to be very creative and realize it in a way that people are going to buy it,” she said, “but really, I’ve got a lot of other ideas and directions that I’m exploring.” One direction The Uptown Gallery executive director is headed toward is a totally different scene: upcycled wearable garments. What began as a fun side project for the West Acres Design Green, Win Green contest four years ago has evolved into a genuine interest for Williams. Her first upcycled garment was a dress made entirely of used bike tire inner tubes. After collecting the material from local bicycle repair shops, she finished the wearable piece with sleeve details made of melted plastic bottles.

19

ARTIST DESIGN & LIVING

“The whole idea of the wearable art is really intriguing to me,” Williams said, “and it’s allowing me to have more of a chance to express a statement that challenges people or asks them to look at things differently.” Then, she created a stunning wedding gown – composed of melted garbage bags. Stumped on what to call it, she held a contest on her Facebook page. The person with the most creative title won a leather piece from her Willi Nilli line, and the winner dubbed it the “Trashy Bridal Gown.” The Bakken Oil Boom in western North Dakota inspired her next piece. A meticulous dress made of trash bags appears to be another homage to upcycled couture. But upon closer inspection, it is a flock of seabirds mired in an oil spill. She entered the dress in a Maryland competition called Manneqart and was one of the only artists to create a wearable piece made of recycled materials. Her next vision is along those same lines. This time, she wants to construct a piece that pays tribute to the destruction that the fracking has caused out West. It will be a female form emerging from the earth that is going up in flames. “I’ve been so struck by just the sheer amount of waste that seems to be going on as we go for the oil out in North Dakota…,” Williams said, “so that imagery just really, really is profound to me.

“There’s a lot to be said about how we misuse our environment and sometimes art is the best way to capture that and pull it together, at least for me.” Her upcycled pieces are currently on display at The Uptown Gallery where her studio is also located.

FARGO Fargo’s Most beautiful gardens. By Meagan Pittelko

The time has come again for Fargo’s annual Garden Tour. From professionally landscaped yards to immaculate personal gardens, the tour features a number of gardens in the FM Area.

T

he Garden Tour is a two-day event spanning eight north Fargo gardens, six south Fargo gardens and one bonus garden in West Fargo. The tour begins Wednesday, July 16 and ends Thursday, July 17, with open hours from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. each day.

The Greek word ‘soroptimist,’ translated, means ‘the best for women.’

The tour is a major fundraiser for the local Soroptimist Club.

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • J U N E 2 014

According to McAllen, the rest of the tour committee consists of Carol Staiger, Alice MarxKuehn and Mariam Conlin.

“It is very heartwarming each year to have these two days to showcase the talents of the people in our community,” McAllen said. “The homeowners are very willing to support this tour as it is well recognized and benefits good causes.”

“The Greek word ‘soroptimist,’ translated, means ‘the best for women,’” said current chairperson Rachel McAllen. “With funds raised from the 2014 tour, the Community Service Committee of the Fargo Soroptimist group will research and provide names of organizations they feel would be good candidates to receive the funds.” In 2013, funds from the Garden Tour helped support Fraser Limited, Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, Nurse-Family Partnership Program,

22

Girl Scouts, Sister’s Path, Jeremiah Project and Trollwood Performing Arts School.

“It is truly a team effort,” McAllen said. “We are also very grateful for the gardeners who so graciously open their gardens for the tour. The people who attend are great to visit with. Without these two groups, we could not have a tour.”

Before the tour begins, though, the committee works tirelessly on the logistics. Right after the current tour finishes, the committee typically begins scouting prospective gardens for the next tour cycle. Once they have a large number of yards to pick from, the committee selects top picks and extends invitations to the gardeners. When the gardens are secured, tickets are printed, the tour route is determined and the committee gears up for the day of the tour itself.

LANDSCAPING DESIGN & LIVING

LANDSCAPING Whether you’re a first time landscaper or an avid green thumb, chances are we all could learn a thing or two from S&S Landscaping’s Allyson Burcham. As Nursery Manager, Burcham spent some time with Design & Living and discussed the essentials that are sure to make your landscaping the envy of the neighborhood. By Tracy Nicholson Photos by Paul Flessland

LIGHTING & ARCHITECTURAL ACCENTS Lighting, fountains and large rock features can add an artistic aspect to your landscaping, which helps add depth and interest.

MULCH

FLOWERS

We generally use one variety of mulch, which is a shredded hard wood in a beautiful medium brown. Outside of special orders, we try not to use mulches that are dyed or colored as this color tends to fade and run over time. Mulch gives you a nice polished, clean look, controls weeds and helps keep moisture in. Mulch will also break down organic material for your plants to feed off of. To ensure great weed control, secure black mesh fabric prior to adding mulch or rock.

Start with a full landscape of shrubs and perennials, with pops of annuals in between for color. This will ensure that, between bloom times of your perennials, you have something to keep a continuance of color. Try something different, with unique flowers like the Red & White Columbine Origami and Lemon Queen Globe flower for great color and texture.

ROCK

SHRUBS

There are various types of rock in different sizes and colors, but the most popular to use is washed rock. This is a reasonably priced, small to medium size rock that works well in any landscaping. It’s also naturally multicolored so it coordinates well with all homes and landscapes.

For shrubs, go with the idea of “right plant, right place.” In other words, pick something that has a shape and size that will work as it grows to its full size. If you choose something too large for the space, you may end up fighting it each summer to fit the space.

POTS

TREES

Decide where you want your pots to be and if you want them to be immersed in your landscaping or if you want them to serve as accent or center pieces by your front entrance. Pay attention to textures, shapes and colors. Instead of choosing things that match exactly, choose a variety of things that go together and coordinate well to help create interest.

When choosing a tree, consider not only size and shape but also the color of your home. Your home is your biggest architectural element, so make sure to consider fall color as well as spring colors that might accent your home and help make a great statement.

WHY CURB

APPEAL

LANDSCAPING

WORKS 1

Plants were selected to create continuity of color and shape with the house and rest of the yard.

4

Bullet edging creates a clean definition between turf and garden bed.

2

Perennials were utilized along the front walk so woody plants would not be damaged from snow removal processes during the winter months.

3

Karl Forester grasses were used to create a vertical element at the corners of the bed.

5

Rock is used instead of mulch to produce a long lasting contrast of material and textures to add to the architecture of the house.

6

The tree provides a large architectural feature to balance the size of the house in the landscape.

GREEN SIGN Make a statement and upcycle your own customized grass letter sign like Burcham created for S&S. The sign shown was made with samples of a realistic turf product from Synthetic Lawn Solutions that S&S carries. It’s almost impossible to tell that it isn’t real grass, even up close. This is an easy focal point for outdoor spaces and is a great conversation piece.

FRUITFUL PLANTER Burcham also showed us a unique way to repurpose old wooden pallets for growing colorful produce like strawberries all summer long. Using pallets has a multitude of benefits, as they can be painted, left unfinished for a reclaimed look or cut down to size for hanging or stacking. For maintenance, Burcham suggests watering regularly and fertilizing once or twice a summer for optimum produce.

Outdoor Gas Firepit from Home & Hearth

This gas firepit is a stylish alternative to your typical wood-burning firepit. Customers can choose their fire glass beads from the company’s extensive list of colors. The best part -- it also doubles as a table.

DARLA SKAURUD Manager at Home & Hearth

“It’s easy and convenient... This firepit is contained, it doesn’t send any pieces off, there’s also no removal of ashes like there would be with a wood firepit. With this, just remove the cover, light it, turn it on, enjoy it, put the cover on and go to bed.”

This North Fargo family displays their school pride in their own backyard. With the North Fargo Spartan logo as the literal cornerstone to their backyard playground, this custom triangular basketball court by Sport Court was designed by Deckmasters in Fargo. Deckmasters designs and installs the Sport Court system into local masterpieces for both indoor and outdoor uses.

Deckmasters's Paul Kamrud designed this court in a triangular design, as it was necessary to save space and maintain the overall layout of the backyard. The size and shape ensure players get enough space to shoot from half court to give their budding basketball players realistic distances to help improve their game.

According to Sport Court Director Joel McCausland, their court’s surface is designed to give both laterally and vertically, absorbing shock and stresses that otherwise can result in injury to young athletes.

“You don’t have to be an athlete to play on a Sport Court. This material is great for all kinds of activities from rollerblading to tennis and soccer. It also provides peace of mind knowing that your kids get to safely play right in your own backyard.” - Paul Kamrud, Deckmasters Showroom Manager

DESIGN & LIVING

OUTDOORS

Sport Court’s performance surfacing is a modular product made from polypropylene. For this design, 12x12 inch tiles lock together over a concrete surface to create a grid that can be made with up to 22 colors. The tiles are made with UV inhibitors to protect the color from fading in the sun. For this Spartan logo design, the homeowners requested permission from the school to use the logo, then the tiles were sent off to certified Sport Court painters that use a special two-ply adhesive paint that is weather resistant for up to 25 years. The hoop and large yard lights were all from the Sport Courtdesigned collection that can be ordered through Deckmasters.

Sport Court is the World’s Largest court builder, with over 100,000 completed projects from a basketball court that they built at the South Pole to the NBA, NCAA, FIBA, FIFA and the Olympics.

Indoor court designed and installed by Deckmasters of Fargo.
