My Trip to New York

Amanda Ahrenholz

Spring has finally sprung! Or so it felt when I was in New York recently. I got the chance to experience almost all that New York has to offer—public transit, great dining, nightlife, beautiful weather… but what

Battery Urban Farm (Credit: The Battery Conservancy)

caught my attention the most were the parks: Central Park, Washington Square Park, Madison Square, they were all amazing. Being in all of these well-used parks got me thinking— Fargo is called the “City of Parks,” but do we use them enough?

One of the most interesting parks I visited in New York City was Battery Urban Farm, a project of The Battery Conservancy. In this unique park, they tie together agriculture

Brooklyn Bridge Park

and community involvement within the city perfectly. Battery Urban Farm is a oneacre educational farm, right in the middle of Manhattan. They organically grow over 80 varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers and grains and use this park to teach the community about the importance of sustainability. Students from local schools help keep this farm going along with help from volunteers. All of the food grown at the Battery Urban Farm is sent either to local schools or sold at an on-site farm stand on

Great Lawn at Bryant Park

weekends. How cool would it be to incorporate this lifestyle into our parks?

Remember when you were a kid and you spent more time outdoors than anywhere else? I know I did. I challenge you to get outside and use the parks more than ever before as we finally head into spring and summer here in the FM area. Here are a few of my favorite parks in the Red River Valley: Island Park, Oak Grove Park, Lions Conservancy

Central Park

Park and Woodlawn Park. Now, here are a few ideas of what to do out there: take a walk, go for a run, ride a bike, rollerblade, play your favorite sport, read a book, get on the golf course, have a picnic or, my personal favorite, jump on a swing at the

High Line Park

playground. After all, we are the “City of Parks.”

Hanging Garden By Elizabeth Huwe

.

Photos by Caitlin Abrams

Sometimes our spaces become cramped or we just don’t have the time to plant an entire garden. With this modified Pinterest project, you can have your own smaller, hanging garden ready to plant in any space in no time at all without taking up much space.

1 2

step

Cut the rope in half, making two 25-foot sections. Wrap cut ends in duct tape to prevent unraveling.

step

Tie a looped knot in each length.

TYING THE KNOT

1

2 3 4

First, find the center of the rope. Make a loop about two inches from the center. Twist the first loop under itself to make a figure-eight. Bring the top of the loop through the bottom of the figure-eight.

3

Pull the top to tighten. Make sure you have a loop below the knot.

step

Take one section of rope and bring the ends through the small loop to form a larger circle. Place the rope circle around the flower pot, and pull to tighten. Repeat with the other rope. Arrange the knots so they are opposite from each other.

We added the large flower pot at the bottom to act as an anchor. This way, your garden won’t be dumped and destroyed whenever the wind picks up.

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • M ay/ J u n e 2 013

15

4

step

About two feet above the flower pot, tie two knots around a washer. Do one knot with each rope. Repeat at the same height on the other side.

5 6

step

Pull rope through openings (bottom and handles) in the largest basket. Try to keep the spacing even. Bring the rope up through the bottom of the basket and wrap around a handle on the side.

step

step

Work the basket down so it sits evenly on the washers.

7

Repeat steps four and five about one foot above the first basket.

step

8

16

Install the screw hooks (or other hardware). Space them as far apart as the top basket is wide.

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • M ay/ J u n e 2 013

Line the baskets with plastic bags and secure with zip ties. This will keep your dirt in the basket, where it belongs.

9

step

Once all baskets are strung on the rope; double knot a washer at the top of each set of ropes. Hang the washers from the hooks. Adjust the knots as needed to hang evenly.

10

step

When satisfied, wrap duct tape around the knots, leaving the center hole in the washer open.

The Psychology of Custom Home Building By Haley Haddock Photography By Caitlin Abrhams

Heritage Homes makes the process of home building easier. With their woman-centric design, they take your needs into consideration when designing and building your home. They do all of this in hopes of saving their customers from a few headaches.

Heritage Homes has a different way of thinking. They start with gaining a deeper understanding of their clients, which usually starts with the females. In order for Heritage Homes to do this, they have clients take a

personality quiz. This understanding of purchasers has allowed Heritage Homes to provide personalized livability for each and every family and buyer that they work with. Welcome to the new psychology of home building.

Want to know your personality?

If you want to know your personality type, go to heritagefargo.com and you can take the test. After one’s personality type is identified, Heritage Homes believes there are four lenses in which people base their home’s design. These include entertainment, de-stressing, flexibility and storage. What’s an important design feature to have in your home? Do you need extra space for hosting parties? Or, what about a custom tiled shower that sprays therapeutic mists for relaxation? Do you need extra storage facilities for all of your kids’ hockey or soccer equipment? All of these features and more can be included in your home.

Storage and entertainment are two of Hertiage Homes’ lenses.

This blueprint is an example of one of Heritage Homes’ designs for a home. Each room is broken into a different lens. According to Heritage Homes, the four lenses are what people are looking for when it comes to a new home.

AllisoNicole's also has items from local artists and they just had their grand re-opening, so be sure to check them out for new items.

WHO SHE IS

Interior designer and owner, Allison Comstock, has a love for repurposing dressers, side tables and nightstands. She also has experience in upholstery.

24

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • M ay/ J u n e 2 013

WHAT THEY DO AllisoNicole’s is a gorgeous boutique that has plenty of eye candy and a lot to offer. Repurposing is just one of the many things that AllisoNicole’s brings to the area. Three years ago, Allison Comstock opened up her store with the intention of bringing a twist to the modern cafe by having a catering service, clothing, floral shop and home decor for customers. This opened up the opportunity to repurpose furniture for custom orders and gave new life to old pieces that had personal meaning.

WHAT THEY HAVE There may not be many pieces of repurposed furniture for you to see in the store, but AllisoNicole’s can repurpose any of your items on a custom order. The chair pictured here was an old item that had been in the family and was so damaged that it was about to be thrown away. Comstock fixed it up and brought it back to life. Not only do they do custom repurposing orders, AllisoNicole’s has a fragrance and body care line out of Minneapolis, called Thyme, a full service floral shop and a nice selection of women’s clothing. So, if you have a piece of furniture that you love, but don’t have time to “bring it back to life,” let AllisoNicole’s help you out.

Comstock’S DIY ESSENTIALS

Having a few Q Tips handy will help you get in those small places that you can't reach. GEL STAIN

There is less mess with gel stains compared to normal stains.

Spray paint can usually get into places that brushes can't and goes on easily.

WHAT THEY DO When Eco Chic Boutique opened two and a half years ago, their goal was to provide customers with eco-friendly choices. "Whether it was organic cotton, chemical free skincare that's locally made, it all fit into the eco-friendly model somehow," said owner, Maria Bosak. Not long after the store started, they were looking for another way to bring people in. That was when a friend mentioned finding older items to fix up and sell. "We had bought fixtures for the store: a dining room table and a hutch. We fixed them up, just to use as display pieces, and people would say, 'Is that for sale?' So we put prices on the few pieces we had and they sold, and then a few more and they sold, the furniture quickly became our top seller."

WHAT THEY HAVE

Eco Chic Boutique's main staple is their unique furniture, which is given new life by the very people who work there. This is the place to go if you are just starting your repurposing journey. Eco Chic has everything from brushes to paint, to stencils and fabric. All five of the employees at the store, including Katie Murry and Ethan Grefsrud, do repurposing so they are able to answer any questions you may have.

Repurposing

UNIQUE? You can see that Hennessy’s Home has just about everything.

Hennessy’s Home has a ton of home décor from local vendors as well as pieces that Hennessy herself has created. For her, “Repurposing was inspired over the years… I’m a farm girl at heart… “ She searches tree lines, barns, cabins and old houses to find things to bring back to life. Often, she finds things in the Art District in Northeast Minneapolis and South St. Paul, MN.

Pre-Owned Items The pre-owned items in Hennessy’s Home are mostly consignment items. The longer the item is in the store, the more motivated the seller becomes. This is when you can find lots of deals on everything from antique cameras to furniture. She also gets a lot of items from estate sales and auctions.

for the men This is a view of the man cave at Hennessy’s Home.

Interior Design When you walk into Hennessy’s Home, you will see many varying paint colors on the walls as well as different fabrics and ceiling tiles. They offer a unique interior design service where they do everything from paint to re-doing your kitchen cabinets. “Most people see furniture distressed, but you can take it much farther than that, like distressing kitchen cabinets, or everyday things. It adds a lot, I go beyond finishing a piece…” She also stages kitchens, living rooms and just about anything you can think of.

his month, we couldn’t pick just one home to help, so we decided to peek into a home as well as a condo. The homeowner just moved in and was sick of the blank color palette. Our designers’ task was to make the space more homey for this minimalist. The second place we chose to dive into is a condo with incredible ceilings and windows. The owner preferred to keep the paint how it is and likes comfortable living. 44

Make it the

Perfect Day

The Home Jessica This house has some great elements to work with; I think it just needs some warmth and color! I would start by painting the walls a nice neutral color. You could also think about painting the ceiling as well to warm up the space. Don’t be afraid of painting a darker color because you have a large amount of light pouring in. Anchor the living and dining rooms with a large area rug that has a unique design and color. Select something that pops off of the beautiful wood floors for contrast. All of those windows are gorgeous and a nice way to dress them up is with window drapery. Think about selecting window coverings with texture to add dimension to the space.

701.588.4666 oxbowcc.com

Switching out the clear pendants above the island and sink is an easy way to put your own style in the space. It should be something with more of an impact and catches your eye; maybe more architectural or with color. I would also switch out the ceiling fan for an accent light fixture; unless you have an attachment with the fan!

Allison My first suggestion is to keep everything flowing together. We want to make them pop, feel warm and homey. I would start by picking out an inspiration piece. Your inspiration piece could be a rug or picture, whatever grabs your attention and has color tones you like. The inspiration piece I am going to pick is the two rugs located in the kitchen. They have a lot of beautiful colors and a great pattern to work with. For paint color, I would pick a green color off of the rug. You can paint all the areas the same green if you like. I would suggest painting the fireplace wall, the wall next to the fireplace with windows and the dining area, two shades darker green and leaving the one wall in the family room, kitchen, hallway and entryway a lighter green. Now let’s focus on window treatments, I would suggest a mediumlight tone faux wood blind. Next, to add a pop to your window and to pull everything together I would put an orange panel on the side of your windows. You can do a solid panel or nice flowing sheer. Playing off of your inspiration piece, I would do printed and solid pillows in the same color tones as your rugs. Add a throw blanket to soften the couch, a couple of end tables with some lamps and don’t forget to add candles, vases, flowers (real or faux,) maybe a couple more pictures, a mirror, fresh fruit in a bowl in the kitchen and you now have a beautiful place called home!

The Condo Jessica Wow! Those high ceilings are gorgeous! This home has amazing architecture and has some great features to work off of. I would start by placing the television on the wall where the sofa is currently located on a nice console or mounted on the wall for a cleaner look. Place a large area rug centered in the room and anchor a sofa and a couple side chairs around this. A sectional sofa would also work nicely in the space and provide a good amount of seating. Select furniture that has more height because of the volume in the space. It is all about drawing the eye upward! Floor to ceiling drapery would highlight the volume in the space and also would help soften the space. If you want more options for light control and privacy, consider window treatments as well. Another option is to switch out the pendants in the living room for accent light fixtures that would act as a focal point and would pull your eye upwards toward the beautiful architecture in the space.

To have your own home critiqued by our team of experts, email info@fmspotlight.com. You provide the rooms, we will get the pics and our contributing experts will dish out the advice.

Allison This is an awesome space that is very open and has lots of wonderful light! My first suggestion is to add color! Let’s add a large area rug. Put pillows on the couch, a few more art pieces on the wall, two end tables, a coffee table or ottoman, lamps, a floor lamp and panel window treatments you can slide open and close. I would place a TV where the couch is located now on an entertainment center with lower storage. We are going to talk about furniture placement. I would place the couch where the two existing chairs are, next place the chairs facing the other windows. By doing this you are still open for entertaining but it gives the living room a close and more personal feel. My next suggestion is if you feel like you need more seating, find a small chaise. I would position this by the left hand side of the remaining windows. This setting will be very functional but also cozy.

You be the judge... Article by Elizabeth Huwe Photos by Caitlin Abrams

Although it may be cold outside most of the year, the new addition to the Cass County Courthouse is a warm breath of fresh air. Don’t take our word for it, look for yourself and see if our conviction does it justice.

By the numbers... • $16 million – Final cost of the addition project. • 70,000 square feet – Added to the courthouse, including a secure parking garage.

• 400 people – County employees who work in the courthouse.

• 600 square feet – The smallest courtroom in the original building.

• About 2,000 square feet – The size of each of the three new courtrooms.

ollywood seems to think all courthouses look dark, cold and, generally, unpleasant. Obviously, they haven’t seen Cass County Courthouse’s new expansion. Chances are, you also haven’t seen it… yet.

Steve Skoblik, project architect from Foss Architecture and Interiors.

Did you know…

The new addition created three more courtrooms: one on the second floor and two on the third. The “wood” ceiling is actually made up of lay-in, micro-perf metal panels with a woodgrain pattern. These panels were used in the courtrooms, as well as the public areas to improve the acoustics. Fabric wall panels were also installed in the courtrooms to reduce echoes. Screens were installed along the walls so everyone can see the documents and videos being shown to the judge.

there is a network of hallways hidden behind these walls? Before, inmates were brought into the courtrooms through the public hallways, creating a potential security threat. Now, with the new hallway system, there is no longer a cross-over with the public.

Steve Skoblik, project architect from Foss Architecture and Interiors, said it was an extra challenge to ensure the new branch would maintain a cohesive look with the rest of the courthouse. This is the third wing to be connected to the original building, which was finished in 1906.

“I also wanted to use the windows to bring a lot of natural light into the public areas of the courthouse. That was something I really strived to get.”

“We kept the same roof-line as the rest of the complex,” said Skoblik. They also decided to use windows and bannisters which complimented the flow of the main courthouse. Take a look around the west addition and get to know this beautiful courthouse. 60

“It’s nice not to have to risk your life walking across 10th St. anymore, especially in the winter,” said Heather Worden, an administrative assistant at the courthouse. “Some of us have started walking on our lunch breaks now that there is more space. Through the halls, across the walkway, and around. Just to get a little exercise.” The walkway over 10th St., which connects the courthouse to the annex building, was another key piece of the addition project. Now, it is much easier for the public and county employees to go between the two structures.

The addition was built where the old sheriff’s residence and jail used to be. Preserving the whole building didn’t work, so some materials were reclaimed and incorporated into the new construction. Blocks of brown sandstone were taken from the exteriors of the jail and sheriff’s residence. They were then used to create the fence pillars around the staff parking lot.

The Cass County Courthouse is located at 211 9th St. S, Fargo.

Homesteading

City Basil

By Katie Beyer

Baker Garden and Gift)

Photos by Caitlin Abrams

Homesteading in the City is a movement focused on reducing consumption and promoting more self-reliance in urban settings. Some components of this would be organic gardening, canning homegrown crops, drying homegrown herbs, creating your own compost for fertilizer from kitchen and yard waste and utilizing nutrient-rich rainwater instead of city water to hydrate your crops and other plants. Maximizing the usability of small spaces through container and perimeter gardening are great ways to increase the amount of crops produced when space is limited. Decreasing reliance on resources and becoming more selfsustaining through acts like recycling and re-purposing, using alternative energy sources and embracing simplistic living are also ideals of Homesteading in the City.

1. Food Preservation

Fennel

• Food preservation includes things like freezing, dehydrating and canning your homegrown goods. You will be thankful in the months to come when you’re enjoying your bounty in the form of sauces, pickles, jellies and dried culinary herbs. This is a great lesson in self-reliance as well as a fun activity that can be shared with friends and family (plus, there are extra hands to help clean up the mess!) • Herbs are simple to grow and dry. • Sage, thyme, dill, bay leaves, oregano, rosemary and marjoram have very little moisture. Using the air-drying method works best on these varieties. Simply use a sharp knife to cut the herbs, remove dried or dead leaves, remove the lower layer of leaves, rinse and dry the bunch, tie herbs together at the base and store to dry in a roomy paper bag; be sure to puncture a few holes in the bag to let it breathe. • Basil, mint and tarragon are high moisture herbs and are best dehydrated using a food dehydrator or cool oven (leave oven empty at around 150 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes, then turn oven off and place herbs on a cooking sheet to dry as the oven cools completely.)

2. Rainwater

• Harvesting rainwater to hydrate your indoor and outdoor plants is an excellent way to provide extra nutrients. Rainwater is jam-packed with all the good stuff your plants are craving. Reducing reliance on city water resources is also an added bonus.

• This can be as simple as setting out a five gallon bucket on your deck or other outdoor space. When it’s time to water, simply fill your watering can from the bucket!

• Composting kitchen waste is one of the easiest things you can do to turn your garbage into a free soil amender.

• Create alternating layers of dried leaves, saw dust, etc. and vegetable based scraps (no dairy, meat or bones.) Your compost bin should fill in about four months, depending on your habits.

3.) Composting

Rain Collection Bucket

• Metal garbage cans work well, plus they won’t rust, just remember it needs a lid. • Simply create 25 - 30 drain holes around the bottom sides and bottom of the can, around 1/4 inch. • Identify the corner of your yard with the best drainage. This will be a prime spot to create a hole around 14 inches deep to plant the can in. Compact the soil around your new compost bin and start throwing the good garbage in!

• To harvest, scoop the composted material from the bottom of the can, leaving any unfinished material in the can. If the mixture is too wet, mix with soil before utilizing. • Use your nutrient-rich compost as an amender or to top-dress your flowerbeds. Share the wealth with friends; a little goes a long way!

“FORTUNE FAVOURS MY LIFE” Get to know the woman in the jacket.

S

tevie Famulari is an environmental artist and professor whose focus is set on landscape architecture, food arts and fashion. A native New Yorker, she is still full of style and spunk, Famulari knew what she needed to do to push her latest fashion creation to the limit, as is evident with her new fashion line, “Fortune Favours.” We spent a little time with Famulari to see what "Fortune Favours" is all about.

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • M ay/ J u n e 2 013

69

F

amulari is not your average designer and artist, she sees design in a different way, “I think that my design is about creating space for experiences to happen. Whether that space is ephemeral like a snow sculpture, permanent like a wetland, temporary like a food piece or the space of a human person, like when you put on your favorite pair of sweatpants that you lounge in and just feel relaxed. Clothes create a space for you, even if it's an emotional space. To me they aren’t different in design. Design is about creating spaces... It's about creating a space for you to experience something.” After some unexpected life events within the last year, Famulari needed a hug, not a physical one, but one that she could relive over and over again. When she stumbled upon a great piece of leather that she fell in love with, she decided to make a motorcycle jacket that would do just that, provide her with a hug. Her friend Jetbd's body was painted and then he hugged the jacket, leaving hugs in paint behind. "Whenever I wore this I would be embraced in the hug from a really good friend, to be embraced in his hug, to have the armor from the elements and to have the warm sweatshirt from your favorite, favorite sweatshirt.” She could think of nobody better to help her with this project than her good friend, nicknamed Jetbd. (And no, we did not spell that wrong.) After creating the first piece, an unexpected series formed. “I actually had no intention of doing a series… I wanted to create something that would protect me from the elements, protect me from life." From this, Famulari has created a new fashion line, purely based off of the idea of human connections. Each piece is handmade from leather and then painted in a way that reflects either a person's view or a relationship with that person.

LOOKING AT THE LINE She had several close friends help her make this line a reality by painting each piece. We sat down with her to talk about the process and get the inside scoop on the pieces in her latest fashion creation.

Although the 12 pieces of Fortune Favours belong to Famulari, you can have your very own made by placing an order and engaging in a conversation with this creative and daring artist. For more information, visit steviefamulari.net.

Opportunity of a Lifetime Resort Style Living

With Ease And Grace Cindy Unfiltering A stunning, long, red leather and gold silk lined coat was painted by Cindy Schwab, a healer, that expresses how she sees people’s energy. ”… this is by a Reiki master, this is how she sees people, not the red, but that’s how she sees people's energy, that they glow.” A Reiki master is someone who practices techniques for stress reduction and relaxation by "laying on hands."

This leather dress tells a timeline of Famulari’s life in the eyes of Amy Waswick, her masseuse. It shows how Famulari has changed through the time Waswick has known her. “A dress had to happen because I don’t have a leather dress... She has known me for a while... That’s a timeline of a transformation of who I was when she first met me which was broken, faded, nice, but very faded up through a rich, deep, solid timeline. That’s how she’s seen my life and my future in the time she’s known me."

Dialogues With Steve

An acupuncturist, Steve Spader, painted this open-back leather shirt. He was focused on what happens when universal energy meets human energy. “The acupuncturist, this is the way he sees energy, he believes that there is white light in a universal kind of way and when it hits a human body it turns into colors.”

The Souls of Friends Overlighting Working with master numerologist, Wes Hamilton, someone who connects to the energy of numbers and reads energy through them, this men's shirt displays how he sees energies. "The energy rises from the earth upward, and energy comes from above downward--both meeting at the heart. From the heart the energy radiates outward, like wings, and spreads down the arms to others."

This men’s fur lined coat represents one of Famulari’s favorite couples, Jeff Wakowski and Jeff Wyant. The painting on this coat is an enveloped hug, one from the front, one from the back.“...this is a man’s coat, lined with fur, awesomely warm. This is a couple, a couple who’s my favorite couple, Jeff and Jeff, they’ve been together 28 years and they are one of my favorite examples of how couples do couplehood well. They smile, they respect each other, they laugh… they are awesomely great people and after 28 years they are still awesome together.”

Stronger As I Open An example of a dialogue with a friend, Keith Huff, and his realization about death and people, this comfy hoodie is a dedication to his grandfather. “... he was talking about his grandfather and had a moment of realization...I said that he got to choose a body gesture. It was the first and only one I was painted for so I got painted and hugged him in a very specific way when he realized how much his grandfather meant to him…this was a dedication to his grandfather.”

Unnamed This piece is the closing of the Fortune Favours series. It is all of the pieces left over from every other piece, stitched together and is left virtually unpainted.

“The 12th is the scraps of every other piece, with 13 spikes, which unsnap to a slit, there are 13 scars…which I don’t think scars are bad they just show your past. It's not painted except on the inside where there is a gold streak and it came through to the back, not intentionally but when you wear it you have no idea of it. And I figure all the light comes from within rather than being on the outside, I know I have that life within me, and I don’t need to show it, but I choose to show it."

Do you remember the three R’s of conservation? Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. In Moorhead, there is a fourth R worth remembering: ReStore.

Preston Johnson (Chair of Restore Marketing Committee)

oorhead’s ReStore opened in 2006. In that time, Rich said, the ReStore has kept more than four million pounds of cabinets, appliances, windows, paint, flooring, and more from being trashed or dumped.

busy and distressing for the staff and volunteers. “We see such nice things go on the curb and into the garbage,” said Johnson. “You think it’s junk? We’ll take that junk. We want that junk. That ‘junk’ is our treasure.”

ReStore has three goals. First, raise funds to support Habitat’s programs in the area. Second, keep usable materials out of landfills to reduce waste. Third, provide quality secondhand options for homeowners and do-it-yourselfers; reducing the need to buy new.

Donations can be brought directly to ReStore, or you can schedule a free pick up. “Our favorite thing is when neighborhoods get together and schedule a pick up,” Rich said. “It’s a great feeling to see the truck fill up with donations and know they will be reused.”

This time of year, with home improvement projects in full swing, is the perfect time to think about the ReStore.

We don’t just smash it up. We’re going to keep things clean for you,” said Rich. Need even more incentive? Donations are also eligible for tax deductions.
