Home Sweet Home

T

o me, a new year is a new opportunity to look at my home environment with fresh eyes and figure out how to create my own personal dream home. Each year my ambitions change, but overall the goal is always to make our home more functional, organized and comfortable. For many busy moms like myself, the kitchen is the room that we spend the most time in and can be by far the most complicated to improve. So for this issue, we set a goal to go local and find some of the most interesting and best built kitchens to reveal their secret recipes for success. Since the kitchen style often determines the style and features of the rest of the home, we thought this room was a great place to start.

When we discussed what homes we wanted to feature for this issue, one sentiment we wanted to portray is that dream homes come in all shapes, sizes and budgets. With that thought in mind, we contacted three local builders that we knew were great at catering to specific needs and budgets. Whether you're a first time home buyer, looking to upgrade or hoping to finally build that dream home, we give you an in-depth tour of three very different local builds. With eight amazing issues planned for this new year, we hope you will join us in supporting the local designers, architects, builders and everyone who makes up this great industry. We deliberately strive to mention and credit all involved with the products and homes that we showcase, and we hope you will take note of these local craftsmen for your own projects. Please enjoy this issue and make sure to visit us at the HBA Home and Garden Show in February!

TRACY NICHOLSON Associate Publisher tracy@spotlightmediafargo.com

A WARM HOME is a welcome sanctuary during these bleak and sometimes frigid winter months. I can’t help but utter a sigh of relief and thankfulness when I step inside and close my front door to the negative 30 degree windchill outside. Since most of our time is spent indoors this season, it’s nice to design a home that is pleasing and functional. Especially when it comes to the kitchen. Most would agree that the kitchen is the most-used room in the house, and it must fulfill all sorts of uses — from professional cooking and entertaining to housing family meals, all while acting as a thoroughfare to the rest of the house. Luckily, in this issue you’ll find plenty of inspiration to create a kitchen that meets all of your needs. You’ll also see some fabulous custom-built homes for a variety of homeowners, some inspirational kitchen products, and a look at this season’s trending color for the home. In this new year, Design & Living is moving to new heights, and I am, too. This is my last issue as an editor at Spotlight Media, but I promise the magazine will continue to inspire you toward a perfectly splendid home.

Home & Garden Show welcomes HGTV’s

DAVID SHEINKOPF The Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead is preparing to roll out over a mile of red carpet for its 53rd annual Red River Valley Home & Garden Show. By the time February comes knocking we are all ready for a bit of spring, right? By Carlita Dietz

FOR OVER 50 YEARS, the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show has offered consumers a chance to come out in a climate-controlled venue, stretch their legs and view the latest from the building industry as well as vendors offering art, food, furnishings, yard and garden accessories. Some show stoppers to check out: Fittingly inside the home of NDSU’s championship football team, you will find Bison-themed items including pool tables and games from Hot Springs Spas, stained glass art from Studio Renaissance and green and yellow cabinetry from Showplace Kitchens that all display “Bison Pride”! Techies can check out the best in sound and electronics at Site on Sound and TrinSpin Customs. Fargo Garage Floors & Doors will feature a “smart” garage door opener that can be controlled from a mobile phone or the Internet. Hot Springs Spas has a wireless, weather-proof television monitor that is part of a hot tub and can withstand rain, snow and the frigid cold of North Dakota.

Q&A Of course, the biggest show stopper will be David Sheinkopf from HGTV’s “Design on a Dime.” He will help solve design dilemmas, covering painting tips and tricks, proportion in your home, designing your home with things you already have, and making sure you always have the right tool. We asked Sheinkopf a few questions regarding his visit.

What can attendees expect to learn from you at the Home & Garden Show? “People can learn to trust themselves. Everyone has an opinion when it comes to design. With a

12

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • JA N UA RY/ F E BRUA RY 2 014

nudge in the right direction, anyone can create an environment that they feel comfortable in, and feel comfortable having guests enjoy!”

What is the benefit of coming to see your presentation in person versus turning on the TV to watch a home improvement show? “Coming out to see me at the Home & Garden Show means YOU can have a one-on-one with a designer and builder. Bring in your photos or floor plans and let’s discuss what design dilemmas you have. It will be an environment of sharing and seeing that all people have the same issues when it comes to design and understanding your home. I run an interactive

seminar and value the Q&A part of it. Some folks are shy when it comes to asking questions, but if an attendee asks a question, the answer I give can be relevant to many.”

What is one tip you often give people getting ready to embark on a new home improvement project? “Research! The internet is an incredible tool for learning. Do the time and you will come out stronger. After you have solidified your design, go out to various shops and market places to get samples. That is also the key. You need to touch and get tangible with the choices you have made for your home.”

FLAVORFUL

KITCHENS By Josie Eyers and Tracy Nicholson

Photos by J. Alan Paul Photography

THE KITCHEN IS THE HEART OF A HOME, and designing the heart of your home is a demanding task. The recipe for a great kitchen has two main components: style and functionality. We showcased five kitchens that have cooked up some flavorful styles and sustaining functionality. Each kitchen features a few vital ingredients that season the rooms to the unique taste of the homeowners.

MODERN

SPACE

IN A PERFECT EXAMPLE of form versus function, this sleek and contemporary south Fargo home defies small spaces with an open layout and tons of hidden storage. Built by Nick Meyer Homes, with features and cabinets by Showplace Kitchens designer Joe Chouinard, this design proves that bigger is not always better.

GOAL: Create a useful, more compact space that focuses on details and storage, but maintains a clean, open and modern look.

LARGE ISLAND: This large island is multi-functional as the largest source of hidden storage. With underneath storage on both sides and even hidden handles on the stool side, it transforms a small kitchen into a compact and highly functional space. Painted Maple in white is used to offset the darkness of the cabinets and the coolness of the metal accents.

COUNTERTOP: Hanstone Coral Mist Quartz creates a large, sleek workplace framing in the granite sink. GRANITE SINK: This nine-inch depth Blanco Espresso granite sink from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery creates an earthy ambiance combined with the sleek countertop. Why granite? It doesn’t scratch or chip easily and is also known to be better insulated.

PANTRY: This pantry is unlike anything we’ve seen. Nick Meyer Homes created this barn-inspired door with a track system for the entrance of this pantry located right off of the kitchen. When open or closed, this industrial detail creates the illusion of your very own wall art installation.

DRAWERS: These espresso-finish maple drawers from Showplace Kitchens feature smoothbearing glides and softclose doors. The best part? Look inside and it reveals a drawer within a drawer. Extra deep drawers allow for pots and pans, while the hidden drawer helps keep organization in check.

BACKSPLASH: Look closely and you will see an artful mix of natural stones, cut to size and stacked in thin layers to create this unique backsplash of mixed tones. This is a great way to give the space a custom look while keeping it affordable.

"Contemporary can get so sterile-looking, so we opted to get our warmth through the deeper tones of wood and stone." -Nick Meyer

DESIGN & LIVING

THIS ULTRA CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN is the focal point of the modern makeover for this 1970’s ranch style home in north Fargo. Homeowners J.P. and Jill McDonald were inspired by contemporary architecture they had seen while working in Germany and traveling in Thailand. Designer Bill Tweten with Western Products gave them just what they were looking for in this modern, functional kitchen.

CABINET DOORS: These bi-fold lift doors framed by stainless steel covers keep the cabinet doors up and out of the way for convenient dishware access.

KITCHENS

GOAL: Bring the outdated kitchen up to speed and create a lighter, modern design.

Some people call it cold, I call it clean. It’s modern, but it’s not crazy modern.” -J.P. McDonald. 21

KITCHENS DESIGN & LIVING CABINETS: The horizontal lines of the bamboo wood cabinets from Western Products with raisin stain add a streamlined look. The cabinets feature an European style frameless construction, built of solid wood.

HARDWARE: The sleek stainless steel hardware mimics the horizontal lines of the bamboo wood, unifying the modern, streamlined look.

AUDIO: The audio equipment from Arctic Audio is stored in the kitchen bar, with easy access from both the kitchen and living room. The sound system is controlled from an iPad, along with the heat, electricity and TV.

22

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • JA N UA RY/ F E BRUA RY 2 014

FIREPLACE: Tweten gave the original fireplace a major face-lift with stacked slate, a fire ring, and a mounted flat-screen TV on both sides.

HISTORIC

CRAFTSMAN BUILT IN 1898, this home in the historic Hawthorne neighborhood in Fargo has a functional kitchen that complements the rest of the home. Designer Bill Tweten with Western Products gave homeowners Naomi and Mitch Kangas the traditional look they wanted and the flow and functionality they needed.

GOAL: Make the kitchen fit with the historic design of the home and preserve continuity with the adjoining dining room.

CABINETS: The inset construction of these cabinet doors from Western Products in chestnut stain adds to the period style of the home and makes the cabinets look more like a piece of furniture. The quarter-sawn white oak wood matches the baseboards, flooring and trim throughout the house.

25

KITCHENS DESIGN & LIVING

“We really wanted to stay true to the history of the home. ... The kitchen really looks like it belongs there.” -Naomi Kangas BACKSPLASH: The kitchen stays true to the home’s original time period with these subway tiles from Cambria.

RANGE: This 36-inch, six-burner Bluestar range and range hood, equipped with warming lights and a utensil rack, meet the Kangas’ cooking and entertaining needs.

HIDDEN DISHWASHER: Modern appliances, which are so common today, would definitely not be found in an 1898 home. The cabinet wood hides the dishwasher while maintaining the historic feel of the home.

KITCHENS

RETIREMENT TENDS TO BE LESS TIRED IN THE WEST. GO WEST.

ISLAND: This island has an angled edge that follows the lines of the wall and maximizes the countertop length. The shallower cabinetry depth allows more room in the aisle and keeps the flow functional.

HARDWOOD FLOORS: This quarter-sawn white oak from Kensock’s Hardwood Floors was blended with a mix of white and zebra to match the existing wood floors throughout the house.

TRADITIONAL

ELEGANCE IN DRUE AND DEB HAARSAGER'S FARGO HOME, this kitchen renovation set the tone for the entire house. Tired of the original install of honey oak in the kitchen, the owners contacted Aubrey Costello at Showplace Kitchens to help them make a clean start.

GOAL: Swap the outdated honey oak cabinets and tile floor for a lighter, more modern design. Redesign the large builtin hutch and buffet to make it flow and connect to the new kitchen design.

CABINETS: This traditional style cabinetry by Showplace Kitchens uses a painted Hamilton door style in the color linen with a caramel glaze. Fluted columns, large top molding and base panels complete the look.

ISLAND: This 2 1/2 inch thick Iroko species wood top creates warmth and defines the space. Details like the elaborate fluting and slide-out baskets add complexity and interest to the piece as a focal point for the kitchen.

"We wanted to showcase the unique wood island instead, and the quartz countertop was a more subtle design to work with than granite." -Deb Haarsager

COUNTERTOP: Style is made simple with this Cambria quartz countertop in Sutton with a Piedmont (A) edge.

BACKSPLASH: This antique copper backsplash from Floor to Ceiling in Fargo is part of the Metallic Collection from Unique Building Concepts.

LIGHTING: Re-using their original lights, the owners opted to keep their large Quoizel fixtures and add new lighting, as seen two pages ago above the sink, which can be found at The Lighthouse in Fargo.

HUTCH: This remake of an original hutch features matching cabinets and beautiful faux apothecary drawers. The seedy glass above is an easy way to showcase family heirlooms and fine china.

KITCHENS DESIGN & LIVING

INDUSTRIAL

INVESTMENT

ORIGINALLY PLANNING TO SELL, these south Fargo homeowners contacted Audrey Newman from JW Kitchens to help them visualize a new layout. Instead of selling, they invested in a dream kitchen with clean lines and industrial and contemporary design.

32

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • JA N UA RY/ F E BRUA RY 2 014

GOAL: Utilize the new design to create specific areas of interest for guests outside of the kitchen. These areas should succeed to keep inkitchen traffic to a minimum, yet still have an open layout.

DESIGN & LIVING

KITCHENS

BUFFET: Newman had this buffet-style bar custom built by Wood Mode on the side of the kitchen for storage and entertaining. Out of the main area of kitchen traffic, it attracts visitors with an easy transition to a multifunctional drink station and wine refrigerator. Raw Urth did the distressed antique metal countertop, with Newman using an antique mirror for the backsplash, giving it more of a furniture feel. The vintage slate finish compliments the industrial bronze hardware from Rocky Mountain. Crystal Schaub knobs with bronze casing help tie in the antique mirror backsplash and add elegance to the muted slate finish.

“The backsplash is a simple and elegant limestone tile with a higher ceiling reach than commonly seen in most areas of the kitchen. - Audrey Newman

KITCHENS DESIGN & LIVING

REFRIGERATOR: More of an industrial art installation, this Thermador refrigerator is draped by a custom-designed antique metal door panel rather than the more commonly seen stainless steel door or matching cabinetry wood panel. This decorative metal door panel was designed by Newman and ordered from Colorado-based company Raw Urth with hardware from Rocky Mountain. To keep the design flowing with the feel of the cabinets, a cherry wine rack above the metal serves as the transition into the cherry cabinets by Wood Mode.

CABINETS: Newman designed and Wood Mode custom built these cherry cabinets with soft close doors for a contemporary and modern look throughout. Seamless design is used for organization and hiding small details or appliances like the custom microwave cabinet above the oven.

34

D E S I G N & L I V I N G • JA N UA RY/ F E BRUA RY 2 014

RANGE HOOD: To mimic the metal design of the refrigerator, Newman sketched this idea for the range hood incorporating the same antique metal and linear details used in the refrigerator panel, also fabricated by Raw Urth Designs in Colorado.

FLOOR: According to the homeowners, imported Bamboo was a great choice for its durability and natural scratch resistance, which is important as this is also the home of two dogs. The owners also liked the color variation between light and dark wood.

Eid-Co Homes built this 2,084 square foot home with two bedrooms and one full bath. A room to expand in the partially unfinished lower level helps keep

the cost down but the value high. There are rooms prepped for two more bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry area and a fully finished family room.

The kitchen is fully stocked with stainless steel appliances, soft close Espresso maple cabinets and durable laminate flooring in Honey Ginger Oak. Plenty of storage and large sinks look even nicer with a large kitchen window overlooking the fully sodded 7,987 square foot yard.

Curb appeal is warm and inviting with this deep two-stall garage design with stacked stone accents and 4-inch vinyl siding in pebble on the exterior. Architectural shingles, white trim and decorative columns add extra appeal.

Family Dream HOME

Marisa Solberg fell in love with the East Coast colonial and cottage designs while working as a nanny in Connecticut years ago. When she and husband Tim wanted to build their dream home, they contacted Heritage Homes to design the perfect combination of East Coast cottage and modern, family-oriented design. They customized one of Heritage Home’s newest layout plans, the Ashmore, to make the perfect space for all four of their children. This plan consisted of 2,600 square feet above ground, with a total of 4,200 including the unfinished basement.

Walking into this two-story home in Osgood, you’ll immediately notice the gorgeous, dark hand-scraped hickory wood throughout the main floor. Marisa chose the flooring for its rustic and reclaimed appeal; she immediately loved the idea of a real wood floor, especially one that’s durable enough to handle four kids. The foyer of the home opens into a large family room with 18-foot double volume ceilings and a neutral, inviting palette. A beautiful mantle and fireplace designed by Marisa with tile from Carpet World lends itself as the main focal point. On one side of the mantle is an entrance to the patio, and on the other are windows to mimic the same look and natural light. This floor plan allows for an alternate route to the patio instead of the traditional entrance directly behind the dining room table. A patio door behind the dining room table would have restricted the flow to the room when entertaining large groups.

The kitchen definitely has an East Coast cottage feel, pairing white painted poplar cabinets from Mill Creek and seedy glass inserts. A large six-foot deep pantry serves as fantastic hidden storage. The island is topped with a Venetian Ice granite from Stone Countertop Outlet and based on an espresso stained knotty alder to provide texture. The backless cream bar stools with cushions were found at Pier One. Our favorite feature in the kitchen? The undeniably gorgeous pendant lights above the island from Horchow. A combination of crystal and bronze create the ultimate glamorous glow in this cottage style kitchen.

49

HOMES DESIGN & LIVING

The spacious dining room table from HOM Furniture easily allows for 10 guests with an additional four seats at the nearby kitchen island. On the dining room wall you’ll see one of many accents that Marisa created. This one is an actual branch that she found at the nearby Osgood golf course, painted in metallic glitter paint and adorned with bulbs. The chandelier in the dining area is from Restoration Hardware.

Directly off the kitchen in a separate room, the Solberg family created this TV room which keeps the noise and chaos on the main floor to a minimum.

HOME Greg Vigesaa and his fiancé Lori Nelson turned their attention to detail into this spectacular and nearly 4,000 square foot Shadow Creek home in West Fargo. This newly finished river lot home was originally sketched by Vigesaa, an ER doctor at Sanford. After sketching the entire home himself, he took the plans to Simonson Lumber in Fargo where they added dimensions to the design. “We just knew we wanted an open layout, quality build and contemporary design,” Vigesaa said. When it came to choosing a builder, they knew they wanted quality over quantity, so they chose Bob Footitt Construction and Footitt Homes to create their dream home. From the barrel vault ceilings in the master bath to the 18-foot fireplace design, Footitt’s execution was exactly what the doctor ordered.

This home boasts some major curb appeal with Footitt Homes priding themselves in the quality of every exterior detail. Cedar beams, cedar plywood shakes and white decorative corbels by the eaves make for an inviting exterior on this gorgeous Sheyenne River lot.

When you sit down to watch the big game here, it will be hard not to notice the 18-foot tall fireplace designed by Footitt, which frames the flat screen and cozy inset fireplace from Home & Hearth. Spanish porcelain tile by Apavisa found at Floor to Ceiling spans all 18 feet at the center of the family room. This stand out feature is far more impressive in person than photos can even begin to relay. Throughout the home, contemporary design features poplar wood with espresso stain on the trim, doors and cabinets from Wood Specialists. Various styles of granite, like the oversize kitchen island with its Juparana Persia color, uses Stone Countertop Outlet make a subtle but luxurious design.

With two formal dining rooms, one for entertaining and one for family, they wanted a dream kitchen in close proximity to both. Top of the line appliances from Rigel’s and a Kohler 8 Degree large sink make entertaining for large crowds an easy task. Accent lighting by Hubbardton Forge creates warmth and ambiance in the large, open space. Modern and sophisticated glass tile backsplash in a Versailles pattern and porcelain tile in dusk from Floor to Ceiling put extra focus on the state-of-the-art induction range.
