PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS
The People
I
f you've been following Design & Living Magazine on social media, you might have noticed that the 2017 People's Choice Awards were coming soon. Our Facebook banner probably gave it away.
Before we reveal the winners, I'd like to give a shoutout to our sales team, web department, graphic designers and editorial manager. Without them, none of this would be possible. I also want to thank our photographers, who were totally on board with the idea of throwing confetti at the People's Choice Awards winners during our cover shoot, as well as our cover models for going along with it. If you're wondering how the winners were decided, let me explain our process. The nomination period took place from July 10-31. During this time, we asked you, our readers, to nominate your favorite businesses. Then our web editor narrowed it down to the top three nominees in each category by calculating which businesses had the most

nominations. Finally, the voting period lasted from August 8-29. Since then, we've been trying our hardest to keep our lips tightly sealed with the results. Within these pages, I've been able to blab to my heart's content. I am so excited to share the names of the winners with you. Last, but not least, a huge thank you to the thousands of readers who participated by placing their nominations and votes. Now, it's time to celebrate who you think are the best of the best in the industry. Congratulations to all of the deserving winners and nominees. Sincerely,
Becca Opp Editor becca@spotlightmediafargo.com

CONSTRUCTION CAREERS
Casey Beckerleg is the current president of Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation. He has worked in sales at Stenerson Lumber since 1994. Stenerson Lumber was founded in 1889 and has three full-line lumberyards in Moorhead, Fergus Falls and Detroit Lakes.
Provide VARIETY and FULFILLMENT
Construction careers are full of variety, from the people to the jobs themselves. So, whether construction is in your blood, whether you’re an indoors or outdoors sort of person, the construction industry likely has a job that can fit you and your interests. The following is an excerpt of an article written this summer about HBA of F-M members and their love for the trades.
W
hen asked why careers in construction trades are important, Trevor Odden, owner of Stone Ridge Builders notes, “People are always going to need housing.” Homes provide necessary safety and security. However, they don’t build themselves. Odden says that human labor is and will always be essential to building homes—he believes there is no way technology will ever be able to replace good, onsite work.
business officer of Kochmann Brothers Homes. People might believe non-trade jobs pay better, so they put more value on four-year degrees. However, just like college graduates can get good jobs, trade workers can too. Guthmiller says the trades field has “good jobs, good people,” and notes that the construction industry is full of fun and secure jobs (not to mention well-paying).
However, although workforce jobs are necessary, many employers are seeing a drop in entry levels. Two million construction jobs will likely be available by the end of 2017. Over 850 construction-related employers are in Cass County alone.
People come to the workforce with all sorts of backgrounds. Some, like Odden, have construction in their blood. Odden’s grandfather owned a general contracting business, so Odden was exposed to the trades early. He remembers tackling woodworking projects with his grandfather. In his current list of duties, Odden performs on-site supervision and trims houses, among other tasks. When people think of construction careers, it is likely they think of someone like him: working with his or her hands outdoors.
“People stereotype a lot of these jobs,” explains Darrick Guthmiller, chief
Guthmiller spends much of his time at his desk or meeting with clients. As a

graduate of North Dakota State College of Science with a degree in construction technology and architectural drafting and estimating technology, Guthmiller’s responsibilities include running the company’s office and drawing house plans. Odden and Guthmiller both enjoy their different work. Odden loves the freedom he finds with his job. He notes the flexibility of his hours and says the main thing is to just “get your work done.” Guthmiller likes working with unique house plans and seeing the end results. The charitable arm of the Home Builders Association, Home Builders Care of FargoMoorhead, has many ways to support those interested in construction careers. Each summer, it also sponsors the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades, a two-week learning experience for high school students interested in construction trades. For more information, go to: hbcfm.com. This article was written by Ali Froslie, HBA of F-M Communications Intern.
Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation provides a positive outlet for the housing industry to give back to the community, building a framework for the future. It is the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead's charity.

WAREHOUSE
Party
Imagine that you are entering a white space with brick walls full of vintage rentals and pretty pastels. With bubbly drink in hand and twinkling lights overhead, you are offered hors d'oeuvres by someone in a wedding dress. Yes, this place really exists--at least it did for one night. On September 14, The White House Co. opened their warehouse to the local community. Don't fret because it's over, though. We took lots of photos to help us remember this whimsical soiree. For Rent(als) FOR RENT(ALS)
The White House Co. opened their Downtown Fargo shop in February of 2017. However, they have offered vintage rentals since 2015. During this time, they curated quite the collection of big and little treasures, eventually running out of room to store all of their inventory. This is what led the co-owners Katie Schiltz, Samantha Klinkhammer and Amanda Rydell to start looking for a new warehouse. This summer, they found the perfect space at 910 Main Ave, Fargo. To celebrate their new warehouse, Schiltz, Klinkhammer and Rydell decided to throw a party. They invited friends, family and the local community via social media. During the party, guest could enjoy music, hors d'oeuvres and sparkling beverages all while exploring the warehouse and viewing rental inventory from The White House Co.
Lovely Vendors LOVELY VENDORS
The White House Co. worked with vendors Love Always Floral, Your Day by Nicole, and Yeobo Sweet Treats to make the warehouse party an unforgettable experience. To indulge all of the senses, Drew Boraas of Fuze Mobile Entertainment deejayed the event. Nicole Midwest Photography also captured the evening, while Maria Slette took over The White House Co.'s social media world.
Christy Tehven of Love Always arranged a table garland out of huckleberry tips and salal tips. She also brought arrangements made up of a variety of roses, lisianthus, ranculous and blue thistle. Your Day by Nicole provided two live wedding dress models.

The White House Co. served champagne gummy bears from Yeobo Sweet Treats at the bottom of glasses filled with sparkling cider. Yeobo Sweet Treats also baked a dreamy, pastel pink cake for the event. Next to the cake, Lettering by Samantha created calligraphy eye-candy with her script on a chalkboard sign.
After The Party AFTER THE PARTY
The next day, Schiltz, Klinkhammer and Rydell took to social media to thank all who helped them celebrate. The White House Co. owners said, "We are so blessed to be a part of this awesome community." They also wanted to thank their friends and family members who helped organize and set up the event as well as the vendors for their contributions to the party. Cooking Up
Kitchen & Bath Designs When the weather cools off, homeowners head indoors. Soon, they start thinking about remodeling the rooms they use the most, including their kitchens and baths. In honor of National Kitchen and Bath Month, Beth Kemmer, a Certified Kitchen Designer at Wood Specialists in Fargo, inspired us with elegant kitchen and bath designs. NATIONAL KITCHEN & BATH MONTH Beth Kemmer is a Certified Lighting Consultant and a Certified Kitchen Designer. She has been with Wood Specialists for the past ten years.
This October is the 35th anniversary of National Kitchen & Bath Month, which is recognized by the National Kitchen & Bath Association. The NKBA is a not-for-profit trade association that represents the kitchen and bath industry. Whether you plan to cook up a remodel or build from scratch, this month is all about promoting the importance of elegant, yet efficient kitchen and bath designs.

THE PROJECT This elegant kitchen belongs to Kent and Melissa Rademacher of Oxbow. The Rademachers were past clients of Wood Specialists. "They were a young family when they first built, but now they are close to being empty nesters, so their home needs changed," Kemmer said. The Rademachers worked with Hanson Bros. Construction on their previous home, so when it came time to build again, they chose the same builder, while interior designer Monica Hart selected some of the finishes. After seeing the original floor plan, Kemmer made alterations to the kitchen to fit the needs of the Rademacher family.
The open-concept kitchen features painted cabinets for Melissa Rademacher and stained, maple cabinets for Kent Rademacher. The paint color is alabaster, while the stain is espresso. There are also two types of quartz countertops. While the perimeter is Torquay by Cambria, the island features Sea Grove by Cambria.

T
he year was 1959, and Bobby Vee and the Shadows had just released their first single, "Suzie Baby." Behind the drum set sat one teenage Bob Korum of Fargo, North Dakota. Today, Korum has returned to his hometown and recently had his condo shown on the HBA's Remodeled Home Tour. With the help of Mark Jensen of Floor to Ceiling Carpet One Floor & Home, Korum has created an updated space to share with his cocker spanielpoodle mix.
The 8 Phase Remodel
1
PHASE
Korum left to tour with Bobby Vee and the Shadows in 1959. "We did the Dick Clarke road shows from 1959 to 1963. We were with the major label, Liberty Records, which was one of the top three in that era," he said. The band traveled all over the country. After years of touring, Korum began a career in media. Later in life, he returned to Fargo to be closer to friends and of course, the lakes. Korum moved into his condo in 2002. "It was exactly what I wanted," said Korum. However, the condo needed updates. The eight-phase remodel began in April 2016 and was completed in July 2017 with the help of Mark Jensen, a consultant at Floor to Ceiling Carpet One Floor & Home. Then in September 2017, the condo was one of the stops on the HBA's Remodeled Home Tour.

Get to Know DAK & Co. is a lifestyle brand that encompasses apparel and home décor. While their products feature graphic designs by Coté, van Rensburg brings carpentry, marketing and accounting experience to the business. "We've always wanted to work together. It helps us deal with life," Cote said.

Their relationship developed under unlikely circumstances. Van Rensburg is from South Africa, while Coté is from North Dakota. The two met during her last
"We have a lot of faith in each other, and in God," van Rensburg explained.
Creative When we first visited DAK & Co, they were still in the process of designing the space. After two weekends of hard work, Coté and van Rensburg have completely transformed the eight-by-twelve-foot room. One of the most dramatic changes was replacing the bland wallpaper with a bold accent wall.

Van Rensburg made clothing racks out of wooden dowels and copper fittings to display DAK & Co apparel. CotĂŠ and van Rensburg also use them during their pop-up shops. "Wherever we go, we take them with us," van Rensburg said.

The couple found this chair for sale in The Black Building in Downtown Fargo. They then painted the arms and legs gold and reupholstered the seat using a velveteen, teal fabric that they had initially purchased with another project in mind. However, the fabric worked so well with the teal accent wall that CotĂŠ and van Rensburg just had to incorporate it into their creative space.

For most people, the word boho is a catchall term for the mixing of unexpected styles, textures and colors. But for sisters Amara Breding, Kirsten Boykin and Breanne Haverlock Lund, co-owners of the bohemian home dĂŠcor company called Willow, boho is a precise combination of their own individual tastes connected through their shared heritage.

orn and raised in Williston, North Dakota, the stylish trio first started Willow back in June of 2015. The business was centered around their Bohemian ancestry and a mutual interest in a diverse array of whimsical, boho accessories and dĂŠcor.

"We talked for a few years about opening a shop but never could find the time to get organized until everything fell into place," said oldest sister Amara, who's lived in Fargo since she attended NDSU for interior design. Now back in Williston after they also attended NDSU, Kirsten and Breanne work with Amara, who is based in Fargo, to build their brand into a statewide sensation.
"We had an idea to create boho-inspired decor since we all personally love the style and are passionate about creating unique items to share with everyone," said Amara, who also owns her own photography business called Amara Lea Photography. "We love channeling our Bohemian heritage and cannot wait to see what the future holds for Willow." Since their first experience as a vendor at the Unglued Craft Festival a few years ago, they've expanded their business to include customers in 48 states, and even broke into the international market with sales to the United Kingdom and Jerusalem.

DÉCOR DESIGN&LIVING
Working with a broad mix of boho materials, Willow decor ranges from softer materials like macramĂŠ or yarn to the rough edges of driftwood and wood slices. Another common element for the sisters' designs includes delicate, yet durable faux succulents and moss.
Willow's Boho Basics Succulent Books We love to style our succulent books on accent tables and bookshelves to add interest. They look great in addition to a lamp and other decorative accessories, on an entry table or on top of a stack of books. Another one of our favorites stylings is on a kitchen cart or similar tiered stand, mixed in with faux or real potted plants.

Wall Hangings Our Boho wall hangings come in many different designs and sizes. Our smaller boho wall hangings are perfect to add to a wall with other cohesive pieces, adding a cozy texture to any space. We love styling our larger wall hangings in spaces where they can stand out on their own like above a headboard.
Moss Wood Slices Our moss wood slices are customizable. Show your state or Bison pride all while adding a unique texture to your space. We typically like to style our moss wood slices in a grouping on a wall with cohesive artwork, decorative mirrors and/or wall planters. We also love them on a ledge or floating shelves along with photo frames or letter boards. An Eclectic Arts & CraftsStyle Home in Fargo
I
n 1987, Bryan and Michelle Vidger purchased their first home. Thirty years later, they opened their doors to the public for the 2017 Historic Hawthorne Home Tour. Now, you can find out how the Vidgers have customized this 1919 artsand-crafts-style house to reflect their eclectic taste.
Homeowners Bryan & Michelle Vidger
JUST TWO YOUNG KIDS In the late 1980s, the Vidgers liked to visit open houses just for fun. "We were just two young kids looking at houses," Bryan Vidger said. However, they both saw something special in this 1919 arts-andcrafts-style home and walked away from the open house with a contract.

The Vidgers remodeled their kitchen in the 1990s. Underneath the linoleum, they found original wood floors. They also chose to keep the exposed brick, which would not become popular until much later.

The Vidgers took extra care to make sure that the exterior of the addition matched the front of the home. They also built a new garage in the same style.
Exterior
In the back yard, the Vidgers have the largest American Elm in the state. "We were at a party and there was a forester there. We were talking big trees, and he said, 'I need to come over and measure that,'" Bryan Vidger said. They nominated the tree, and it was named the grand champion.

NEST
A new custom home builder is spreading its wings in Fargo. Studio West Homes made their Rocking Horse Farm debut with a functional family home in the Fall Parade of Homes. Inspired by traditional design, Kirsten Waverek, Elliot Steinbrink and Trisha Stibbe of Studio West Homes have crafted a stylish, contemporary headquarters for the new homeowners and their young children. From mudroom to bonus room, this 4,370 square-foot house has plenty of space for growing up.

CUSTOMIZATION IS EVERYTHING It all started when Waverek and Steinbrink realized that everyone wants their home to look different. Gone are the days when homeowners wanted all of the houses in their neighborhood to look the same. In addition to building custom homes, they are now customizing the building process with their new company, Studio West Homes. While Waverek and Steinbrink are co-owners, they have also brought on a third employee, Trisha Stibbe.
