when I don’t know what I want to say, I’ll just start writing and hope that the right words will come out.

That’s what’s happening right now. Every month, I rack my brain about what to write in this editorial, not even sure if anyone is reading this thing. (If you are, tell me by e-mailing andrew@fmspotlight.com. I really just sit at my computer all day hoping you’ll email me.)

Not many people are given the chance to express their thoughts in such a public forum as a magazine editorial. I take that responsibility very seriously. This magazine and myself are out to make a difference. While it might not seem like much at first, we (Fargo Monthly and our parent company, Spotlight Media) believe that we can make a difference with our magazines. I love it when I receive an e-mail from someone thanking me for covering a story. It really makes my day.

On the flip side, my least favorite times of the month are when I receive an e-mail complaining about this or that. It’s unavoidable in this field to please everyone. It’s just not possible. However, I still encourage you to e-mail about any issues you may have with this issue. (See what I did there?) I only ask that you be polite and keep the obscenities to a minimum.

So, I guess I’ve finally decided what I want to say in this editorial. I believe that something as simple as a magazine can improve the community.

Exposing everything this area has to offer can really make the community stronger and closer. That right there is my favorite part of the job and I hope that is your favorite reason for reading this magazine.

O

n the map, downtown Fargo only covers a few blocks, but the impact this small section of town has on Fargo’s culture is huge. The art scene is flourishing with several galleries and studios popping up. It’s turning into the nightlife hotspot with different venues and bars.

However, it’s possible to say that in no way is the cultural impact felt more so then in the food boom that is happening in Fargo.

It’s always been a food city, but recently the culture of fine dining and great eats is taking off. This is due in large part to the work of a few certain chefs.

Christian D’agostino began cooking when he was 13 years old. Like most cooks, he began by washing dishes in an Italian restaurant in Rhode Island, where he grew up. From there he traveled around a lot before ending up as a chef on a cruise ship. This allowed him to travel the world. “You get to see a lot of the world, but it’s hard work so there’s two sides to it,” he said.

This job gave him the opportunity to learn the cuisines of each location they traveled to so he was able to garner knowledge on a wide variety of different foods. While on the cruise ship, D’agostino met Tony Nasello, the owner of Sarello’s Restaurant in Moorhead. That friendship between Nasello and D’agostino led him to Moorhead where he worked as the chef at Sarello’s for a number of years.

Fast-forward a couple more years and D’agostino became the new co-owner of Monte’s on Oct. 1, 2012. With the new ownership came a new philosophy. “The philosophy is mainly everything I worked with on cruise ships and my training at school… The base is French cooking and on top of that all the places I’ve visited and learned. I would call Monte’s American Continental fine dining. The main philosophy is to make the food taste good.”

What to eat: Caramelized Sea Scallops – They’re served with a butternut squash puree, spicy corn relish and Andouille sausage. D’agostino’s brother is actually a sausage maker in Alabama and ships the Andouille sausage up to Monte’s.

The Evolution of food in Fargo: “…When we opened Sarello’s, there were no fine dining restaurants here...

I think we set the bar... We allowed other restaurant owners to know that you can do that here. There’s a market for that.”

Owner of Nichole’s Fine Pastry

Lemon Curd Tart. Chocolate Feuilletine Cake. Vanilla and Salted Caramel Gelato. Hungry yet? Since Jan. 31, 2003, Nichole Hensen has been serving up some of the finest pastries to Fargo. The quality service that people have come to expect is due to a few characteristics of Nichole’s Fine Pastry. “We use good ingredients. I don’t publicize it that much, but we use organic flour… And menu items that change.”

Pastries aren’t the only things that Nichole’s is known for either. They have a very popular lunch menu that serves delicious sandwiches which have become a staple for them.

“I remember the first day (of making sandwiches) I made six sandwiches and that has grown into a pretty good lunch routine.”

Hensen has helped evolve food in downtown Fargo and she does love the baking aspect of the job, but there’s one other part of her job that is very important to her. “It’s being able to employ people at a place that has such a great reputation and that the staff really like working here. That’s very rewarding to me.”

What to eat: Vanilla and Salted Caramel Gelato – This cold treat will make you feel like you’re on the streets of Italy.

The Evolution of food in Fargo: “Mostly, I would say that it’s more innovative. I think that the chefs in town are putting flavors together that are different than this state is used to. That helps teach people. Those that are a little more daring will try it… The innovation is there. There’s a lot of creativity in town with food.”

The Messy Cook

Executive Chef at The Beefsteak Club The Beefsteak Club has undergone a recent facelift. This fine dining restaurant opened its doors last October and was met with good praise, but the high prices scared people away.

In February, Scott Motschenbacher came on as the new chef and things have looked up ever since. “We changed the menu.

What he (former chef) was running was way too expensive, especially for Fargo. That sort of stuff would work for Chicago, but not in Fargo. That was the biggest thing.”

When Motschenbacher took over as head chef, there was a lot of work to be done, including creating a new menu. As with most good things, the menu was concocted over a few cocktails. “Myself and the sous chef sat down and had a couple of PBRs and a couple of Jamesons and we devised a menu, ordered the food and overnight put it together.”

Apparently that new menu is working because business has picked up and the menu has been well received. The addition of their lunch menu has helped them out greatly. Now, chicken and waffles, carnitas and one heck of a hamburger can be bought at a reasonable price. “When it comes to the food here ... I just like to have fun with it. I think being a messy cook is fun. Messy, not sloppy. There’s a big difference there.”

What to eat: Prime Rib – Meat, potatoes with a basic sauce. Motschenbacher described it best: “It’s one of the most simple meals, but it’s damn tasty.”

The Evolution of food in Fargo: “Food in Fargo has come a long way... There really wasn’t a whole lot going on in Fargo, but all of a sudden we started getting these chefs ... who moved to this area and they started producing this really amazing food. I think that it’s a friendly competition between everyone that inspires you to be better at what you do and try better things and perfect what you’re doing.”

The Dramatic Duo

Ryan Nitschke & Nick Weinhandl Executive Chefs at the Hotel Donaldson They say two heads are better than one. Well, they’re putting that into practice at the Hotel Donaldson. Ryan Nitschke (right) and Nick Weinhandl (left) are both Executive Chefs there. Nitschke explained the philosophy behind the HoDo’s food and it’s very basic, “Keep the food fresh and keep it simple and honor the ingredients.” Since the inception of the HoDo in 2003, the restaurant has been on the cusp of the food innovation in Fargo.

That innovation is due to the fact that the chefs are adventurous and willing to take some risks with their menu.

“We change our menu every three months so we’re always thinking of different specials everyday… that’s the fun part about it,” said Nitschke. Those new menus will feature everything from seared Ahi tuna to a grilled Bison sirloin. They use local ingredients for everything possible.

Although the HoDo’s model of two executive chefs might be a little bit different, it works for Nitschke and Weinhandl. “It’s actually kind of nice,” said Weinhandl. “You can divide the workload between the two of you, which helps. Basically, it’s a chance to bounce creativity off of each other.” For the last ten years, the HoDo has been leading the pack in innovation and, despite the top competition, they remain among the top contenders for fine dining in Fargo.

What to eat: Grilled Bison Sausage - It comes with a Moroccan pilsner couscous cooked with some Gouda cheese and served with a bison sausage on top.

The Evolution of food in Fargo: “There’s a lot more variety downtown… I guess more people care about where the ingredients are coming from… Downtown is going to do more unique and privately owned places,” said Weinhandl.

The Up-and-Comer

Jeff Reitz

Senior Sous Chef at Mezzaluna

You may not have heard about Jeff Reitz, but you’re going to want to remember the name of this chef on the rise. Rietz is currently the senior sous chef at Mezzaluna and he’s young and hungry. This 25-year-old already understands the most basic principle of cooking. “My philosophy of cooking is to put a product out that’ll put a smile on someone’s face.”

So what exactly does a senior sous chef do? He works right under head chef, Eric Watson. Watson is the one who comes up with the menu while Reitz is the one who actually enforces that menu. The skills and tasks of Reitz’s – like all chefs – are varied and numerous. Reitz’s different roles range from making sure products go out to people to scheduling staffs’ hours.

The life of a chef is not an easy one. Profits are minimal. Hours are long and grueling. The kitchen is hot and cramped. The number of orders can be daunting and stressful, but Reitz would have it no other way. “I enjoy the adrenaline rush you get from service. When you have 20 tickets hanging and all of a sudden you look up and four hours have flown by … you really have to roll with the punches... There are two things you can do. You can walk out and nobody gets food or you bite your lip and force through it.”

What to eat: Daily special – Everyday there’s a new special that Reitz recommended are must haves. These specials always include some variety of seafood. The fish is flown in from Minneapolis and is usually served the next day.

The Evolution of food in Fargo: “I have noticed the food evolving from your mother’s meatloaf... It was food. It wasn’t an art. People wanted more for their dollar… I noticed over the past 12 years, food is slowly changing.”

Culinary SPOTLIGHT Fargo’s Food Scene:

A Decade of Transformation

I

think that ten years ago, many folks may have considered Fargo a bit of a culinary wasteland. I suppose some still do. The chefs in Fargo are the Rodney Dangerfield of the culinary world; we don’t seem to get much respect.

A newcomer to Fargo has a lot to experience in a culinary scene.

Incredible house made pastries and espresso at Nichole’s, attentive service at Sarello’s, trendy concepts at the HoDo, exotic ingredients at the Asian Market, exciting mixology at Mezzaluna or a Humpty Dumpty burger at JL Beers. (For God’s sake, we have like a thousand sushi options now!) We’ve even dabbled in Thai and Indian. It’s true; our food scene isn’t quite there yet. We still have our work cut out for us, but I have no doubt that we will get there. The last ten years have brought amazing improvement in our culinary community. Imagine what the next ten may bring. Our food scene has great momentum and shows no signs of slowing anytime soon.

With that being said, two of the worst meals I’ve ever had in my entire life were in Paris and New York City. Sounds crazy I know, but when you decide to seek out a restaurant without the recommendation of a local or fellow food enthusiast, you may end up with a disappointing dining experience. It’s funny how when you think of a place like Paris, it’s hard to imagine that bad food exists. On the flip side, I think much of the country would have a difficult Eric Watson time imagining that good food exists in Fargo.

The fact of the matter is that you are always better off when you dine based on a legitimate recommendation.

All of my friends and former co-workers in Colorado thought I was Fargo, like many cities, is full of great restaurants; you just need to crazy when I told them I was moving to Fargo. “Why in the world understand how to navigate around the bad ones. would you move there?” “Do you know how cold it is there?” Honestly, I was terrified of what may happen to my career when Sara (my wife) Ten years ago, a handful of chefs and restaurateurs decided to and I moved here, but I was wrong. I am amazed by the tremendous pioneer a brand new food scene in the upper Midwest. Considering economic opportunity that exists in this region. So, to all my friends the short growing season, we’ve done a great job of adopting a back there in Colorado, not to rub it in or anything, but ... Haha! “farm to table” mentality. Fresh seafood is flown into Fargo several days a week and food distributors have realized that area chefs are hungry for fresh ideas. Not to mention our restaurant patrons ** Eric Watson is the owner of Mezzaluna and Mosaic are food cultured now more than ever and are demanding better Foods in Fargo. espite what you may believe, blues music is not dead. In fact, it’s thriving in Fargo with the Fargo Blues Festival. This fest grows every year because of a simple philosophy. “Quality is what we look at,” said Dan Bredell, executive director of the FBF. “That’s the most important thing. We go after great acts that we listen to… Blues isn’t some old guy that sits on a porch playing his guitar. However, there are some… There’s people that are rock and roll out there.”

That quest for quality is bringing some major blues performers to Newman Outdoor Field on Friday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 17. The headliner for Friday is Charlie Musselwhite, who recently teamed up with Ben Harper to create a number one selling blues album, “Get Up!” On Saturday, Walter Trout will perform, who was voted as the sixth best 30 // fargomonthly.com

guitarist of all time by BBC Radio One’s list of the top 20 guitarists of all time.

According to Bredell, the FBF draws a crowd from a wide variety of musical backgrounds. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that rock, blues and country are so close… There are a lot of good bands from start to finish.”

Throughout the years, acts as large as Jonny Lang, Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers and Ray Manzarek of The Doors have performed at the Fargo Blues Festival. National acts aren’t the only people who have traveled hundreds of miles to attend the FBF. Every year, there are dozens of festivalgoers who travel long distances to attend the festival. For example, in one day, Bredell took orders for tickets from people in places as far away as Iowa, Oklahoma and New Jersey.

TWO ARTISTS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Some well-known artists are headlining the festival. However, according to Bredell, all of the acts are very talented. He recommended the Rusty Wright Band and Albert Castigila as two bands that are performing during the day that people should not miss.

At many festivals, there are long lines for bathrooms, food and beer. Not at the FBF. Because of the openness of Newman Outdoor Stadium, lines are minimal and fast moving.

3. QUALITY IS IMPORTANT –

Every year, Bredell and the planners of the FBF receive between 250 – 300 albums every year to review. They handpick the performers from that list so every artist is guaranteed to be talented.

4. YOU’RE NOT HELD CAPTIVE –

Unlike many festivals, it is very easy to come and go. Everything is very relaxed and parking is very easy and accessible.

5. IT DOESN’T BREAK THE BANK –

Tickets for the festival are very affordable. If tickets are bought at the gate, they only cost $40 for a two-day pass.

Itasca State Park is Minnesota’s oldest state park, boasting over 32,000 acres of trees and trails and 100 lakes that reflect the park’s sheer beauty.

Tourism peaks in the fall when shades of red and yellow paint the trees throughout the park and wildlife occupy every open space. But taking a day trip to Itasca State Park is well worth the drive in the summer. Bring your bike and pedal through scenic trails or just rent one when you get there!

Pontoons, kayaks, canoes and more are available to rent for an eventful day in Itasca State Park.

Take a turn at Exit 258 off of Interstate 94 and catch of glimpse of the World’s Largest Buffalo and search the herd of bison for White Cloud, Jamestown’s white bison. Her white bison grandson, Dakota Legend may also be in sight and carries the genetic line of the animals that once grazed on the plains before almost being annihilated. Frontier Village features many preserved buildings to explore and fun for the entire family. For more outdoor fun, the Jamestown Reservoir is the perfect setting for a picnic or a bike ride along the path surrounding various fishing hotspots.

So how many new songs does Tom Lunde have to learn now that he joined Tune In Tokyo?

Three guys, a girl and a band The genesis of Tune In Tokyo goes back to 2008 when Bret Chisholm started the group as a five-piece band. Many incarnations of the band came around while they performed a wide assortment of genres, but they eventually settled on a four-piece band with Alyssa Vistad as the lead.

Where in the world does a band from Fargo come up with the name “Tune In Tokyo”?

So why pop and why a female singer? Vistad explained the not so complicated science behind it. “Girls respond well to that,” said Vistad. “You can get a bar full of dudes that want to listen to heavy metal, but nobody’s going to dance. If the girls dance, the boys come later.”

Tune In Tokyo is probably not many people’s first idea for a band name.

Bret Chisholm explained the origin of the name. “In my first lineup, a guy I worked with (and I) were looking for names and he mentioned this movie, ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun.’ There’s a scene from there, Tune In Tokyo is kind of a gag.” We’ll let you do some Googling to find out what that gag is though.

It may have taken some blackmail and coercion, but the band was able to take on Tom Lunde as its new bassist. “We were looking for the right fit and we found out that Tom just might have a little bit of interest, so I blackmailed him into being in our band. (Laughs) I asked him to marry our band,” said Vistad.

Running the risk of sounding cliché, Brandon Kuntz is excited about the addition of Lunde. “Not to be cheesy, but the future is bright. We’re really excited to work with him.”

This band can really get a dance floor rocking. At many of their concerts, most of the audience is dancing the night away. While “Love Shack” is almost a guarantee to get the bar hopping, there’s another song that gets everyone moving, especially the guys, which might come as a surprise. “’Party in the USA.’ The dudes LOVE that song. More guys scream that song back at me than girls do,” Vistad said.

Concordia William Craft came on board at Concordia on July 11, 2011. Before coming to Concordia, he served as the Dean of Luther College and Vice President for Academic Affairs, holding a faculty appointment as Professor of English.

>How do you feel Concordia fits into Fargo-Moorhead?

Well, we’ve been fitting into Fargo-Moorhead for almost 125 years. The college was founded in 1891 and it became a magnet originally for the families of Scandinavian immigrants, mainly farm people who wanted an education for their children and grandchildren. It has grown along with Moorhead and Fargo. 2016 will be our 125th anniversary.

To answer your question more directly, we fit in a number of ways. We fit first, because we’re a liberal arts college. Liberal colleges prepare people to be thriving citizens and thriving professionals. A lot is happening here and it’s happening fast. Fargo-Moorhead needs people who are committed to being not only skilled professionals, but citizens who care about the development of their communities... That’s what Liberal Arts Colleges do...

We fit as a college of the Lutheran Church for some obvious reasons. There are lots of Lutherans here. We also fit because through that faith heritage, there’s a deep commitment to service in the community that means that, even as undergraduates, our students are out working in the community...

Concordia has a very strong commitment to experiential education so that our students are learning, not only in traditional classrooms, but outside...

A fourth thing is that there is a very strong commitment here to undergraduate research so that our students are working, not only in sciences, but social sciences and humanities to address big, unresolved questions...

>What separates Concordia from the other colleges in the area?

Let me preface this by reiterating what I said before: We highly value our partnership with those other colleges. We recognize that, although we are competitors, we have a lot to gain with various forms of collaboration...

What’s distinctive at Concordia in this setting is that we’re a four year residential, Liberal Arts College. Our students come here. They come here and live here. They become part of a tightly woven, not exclusive, campus in which they have a chance to discover who they are and what they want to do with their lives.

>What was it like to sit next to and interview Bill Gates on April 27?

(Laughs) Now, you’re not the first person to ask me that question. It was fun. I hope that’s an OK answer. Mr. Gates was the same backstage as he was onstage. That’s to say, he was very focused. He had read about Concordia. When we were backstage, he asked me very focused questions.

Not, ‘How’s it going?’ ... You may remember that one of our students, a Pakistani student named Sa’id, had asked him a question about polio in Pakistan. Gates could have given an answer like “Oh, yes, polio is a dreadful disease and we should all do our part to eradicate it.” Well, he didn’t do that. He knew exactly what was happening and what was not happening. To answer your question, one of the things that was interesting was to watch so focused a mind operate in that setting...

MSUM Edna Szymanski took over as president of MSUM on July 1, 2008. She recently announced that she will be retiring on June 30, 2014. She received a Ph.D. in special education and rehabilitation counseling from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Scranton, PA.

szymanski >How do you feel MSUM fits into Fargo-Moorhead?

Well, all three institutions fit very differently and we don’t compete. We all bring something separate. We are a small comprehensive institution and the first initiative of our strategic plan is to work with business, industry and civic leaders to stimulate the regional economy… We are focused on teaching and learning more than we are on research and liberal arts, but we’re also focused on preparing people for jobs. Preparing them not only for the jobs, not only of today, but also for the jobs of tomorrow. For that reason, we work very, very closely with the Greater FargoMoorhead Economic Development Corporation and we meet regularly with business and industry leaders to look at how we can get better and change our curriculum so that when people graduate, they can get jobs.

>You’ve worked across the country, what makes MSUM different from all the other places you’ve worked?

The faculty and how much they care about the students. The faculty cares more about the students than they do their own prestige... They care about their students, not only as students, but also as people. They want to see their students achieve in life and in work.

>With you retiring soon, what sort of legacy do you hope interview

to leave behind?

I’d like to leave the university well positioned to succeed and thrive in the future. I think we have.

>You hold office hours for students, why is that important to you?

Because we’re about students. I want people to come and tell me what’s

on their mind. I want to hear about what they think we’re doing well, what we can improve on and, frankly, I learn a lot from them.

>What’s MSUM doing to give back to the community?

A whole lot. The 4th of July costs us a heck of a lot more than we ever rake in… Look at all the wonderful community events we have. We’re going to have the naturalization ceremony coming up again. That’s very, very important. We try to hold a whole host of events that are relevant and helpful to the community.

>Anything else you want to add?

One other big thing is that we are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and University System, a system of 31 colleges and universities in 54 locations across the state. We work as a system. We really do. Today, we refer many more people to M State than we ever did before. It’s not about what we want in terms of numbers and etc. It’s about helping students to start where they’re most likely to succeed… For many students in today’s economy, it makes more sense to start in a community college. With our system, we are trying to make it seamless. It’s a whole lot more seamless than it was. We still have some things to fix. My team and I are working on improving transfer, particularly in a few disciplines that have been a little tricky. We’ve made dramatic progress in that and we will continue to. The system is powerful because it’s about students. It’s about the state.

It’s not about universities competing with each other. It’s about institutions collaborating in a way that makes sense for the students and for the community.

bresciani >How do you feel NDSU fits into the Fargo community?

It’s almost impossible to separate the two … each is the foundation and the compliment to the other. NDSU enjoys being in a community that is increasingly drawing national attention for being one of the best “college towns” in the nation, and a part of that is obviously the presence of a major research university which still prides itself as being a part of the community. Without an inviting and vibrant community like Fargo though, the attractiveness of our campus and the impact it is having on the state and region would be substantially diminished.

>Talk about how NDSU’s Incubator (program to help start up small businesses) is continuing to contribute to Fargo.

Well as you know, the NDSU incubator is far and away the most successful venture of its kind in the state. The Incubator program consistently operates at maximum capacity and provides young firms and entrepreneurial ventures a chance to get started with a level of guidance, expertise and support not available in the private sector. The success of those firms and increasing commercialization of their products has drawn national attention and awards to the Research and Technology Park for its Incubator program. It is just one more example of the exciting, thriving new business environment made possible by the presence of NDSU.

>Where do you see NDSU going in the future?

That’s a very exciting question because NDSU is on a trajectory never before imaginable. We’ve already become the state’s topranked research university and in fact are now in a category with the top 108 private and public universities in the nation. I fully anticipate that our unique combination of being a student focused, land-grant,

research university will result in our continuing to climb in those national rankings while educating more and better students, producing more research and service to the state and nation, and being recognized on a level of performance with institutions that in the past would have been “aspirational” points of comparison but are now our peers.

>What separates NDSU from the other schools in town and in the area?

As I suggested above, NDSU is the first and only top-ranked research university in the state and we now also lead our five state area in research productivity, the number of Ph.D’s we graduate, and the amount of royalty revenue we generate from our research and inventions. That is obviously complimented in a very good way by the type and size of the other colleges and universities in the Fargo-Moorhead area as well as throughout the state. Within just a few miles of NDSU are a wide variety of higher education options for students to choose from.

At the same time, NDSU is certainly one of the most powerful economic engines of the state and, in fact, recent studies have shown that we annually contribute a $885 million economic impact to the region. That’s particularly impressive when you realize that less than 1/4 of our funding comes from the state, so we represent a 7:1 return on that investment of state dollars. At the same time, our students enjoy a 14.4 percent return on their investment in an NDSU education, and over half of the out-ofstate students we enroll end up staying here after graduation for their first jobs. I don’t know that there are many if any other colleges or even businesses in the area that can demonstrate contributions like that.

How Powerful is Music?

W

hile researching different subject matter to cover in this monthly column, I recently stumbled upon a video about the healing power of music. The video was of an elderly man that had been in a nursing home for over a decade. He was virtually unresponsive, nearly non-verbal and was unable to grasp his surroundings. One SETH Holden of the nurses placed headphones on the man, playing music from the era of his youth. The music was played for only a few minutes and then the man was interviewed by a doctor. During this interview, something amazing happened.

After hearing the music for only a brief period of time, the man was virtually transformed into a younger version of himself. He was alert, responsive, energetic, articulate and complex with his answers to the doctor’s questions and most importantly, he seemed extremely happy.

Seeing this video inspired me to dig a little further into this subject. There are literally thousands of videos, stories and studies conducted by medical experts covering the healing power of music. Studies have shown that music therapy can relieve symptoms caused by schizophrenia, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and others. Music can have a powerful impact on the mind. Have you ever experienced a feeling of euphoria or “chills” up and down your spine from hearing one of your favorite songs? This is simply music triggering the parts of your brain that release dopamine, the chemical responsible for feelings of pleasure and reward.

Given that the healing power of music and music therapy have been hypothesized, studied and proven effective, and that music has been used as a healing force for centuries, it begs me to wonder how much this idea will continue to be embraced in the future and how far we can push it. As with most things in life that I find funny or interesting, I always like to see how far boundaries can be pushed, and digging into this subject further, I unearthed a key figure relating to the expansion of this idea: Bob Marley.

The reggae singer believed that hate, anger and racism could be cured through the healing power of love and music. If we as humans possess the knowledge that music can give relief to our most devastating neurological disorders that we suffer from as individuals, can that same powerful force heal the disorders that plague humanity as a whole? Regardless of our progress as a species, we still live in a world where hatred, fear, anger and racism infect us everyday. It would be nice to know that there is a cure out there and that all we have to do is open our minds, open our hearts and press “play.” * I openly welcome questions, comments, criticism, thoughts and ideas.

The cobber feed is once again back at Concordia. They’ll provide the entertainment with clowns, inflatable games, a barrel train, face painting and, of course, the corn. You bring whatever other food you want and utensils.

The Fugly (Flat and Ugly) Bike Race 23rd at 6 p.m. and 24th at 9:30 a.m.

Flat and Ugly is the name of the game for this mountain bike race in one of the flattest places on earth: MB Johnson Park in Moorhead. You won’t be racing down harrowing mountain trails, but the race will still be intense and challenging. The event features three race categories—citizen, sport and expert class—and a kids’ obstacle course. Registration is $25.
