SORRY MOM. She’s going to be so disappointed that I’m using this photo for my editorial pic. (Oh well, she should be used to things like this happening.) Last month, I had the distinct pleasure of winning the Hooters Wing Eating Competition. With that honor came a nice little check, a pretty little trophy and an EXTREMELY full stomach. Fast forward two weeks, I crossed the finishing line after completing the full marathon of the Fargo Marathon. My time was nothing worth bragging about. (I don’t think time is ever important though.) The only thing that matters is that I finished. The only person who can take credit for finishing a marathon is yourself. So what do these two seemingly random events have in common. Well, running 26.2 miles gives you plenty of time to think and reflect on your life and what you’ve done. Throughout those grueling miles, I decided that life is about variety. They say that variety is the spice of life. I couldn’t agree more. This world is far too big and beautiful to not take advantage of everything out there. It can be hard to find the balance of work and play but once you find it, there lies true happiness. Now go out there and enter an eating competition! (Just make sure you go for a run afterward.) 2 // fargomonthly.com

HUGz Kipp G is one of Fargo's leading hip-hop artists. His HUGZ shirt is simple, but inspired. "I would always say... show's $5 and the Hugz are free," said Kipp G. "I guess my reputation preceded me and they thought it would be fresh to put the word HUGZ on a T-shirt. Merch Me is huggen awesome."

“I honestly thought of it in the shower one day,” said Nels Hunstad, the creator of Merch Me.
Little Winter
Business
Little Winter is one of the most recent bands to team up with Merch Me. This alternative country/folk band is working on recording and producing their first full-length album.
He had been screen printing for 10 years and wanted to reach out to music groups and encourage their fans. “To me, T-shirts are such great marketing,” Hundstad said. “They get a ton of impressions every time someone wears one of their shirts.” Rather than having a band design, pay for and then haul around all of their shirts at once, Merch Me takes a different approach. Their designers create the logos and print templates for free. After the design is approved, a picture of the shirt is added to the Merch Me online store. Then, as shirts are purchased, they are silk-screen printed and shipped to the fans. What's Next? This way, there are no piles of shirts in unpopular sizes or colors left laying around for months. “We’re really open to working with people and genres," said Hunstad. "All we ask is that people be passionate about their music, passionate about spreading it and be open to us helping them.”

Dann K
Hunstad would like t to try online T-shir a nonfundraisers for are ttons profits. Stickers, bu tions and concert promo could also come in the future.
Dann K and Black Casket have described their sound as melodic and haunting eclectic, alternative folk music. Dann K, Andrew, Stevo and Thomas play their parts to make up the band.
Check out all of Merch Me's shirts at merchme.us. Or, you can find them in the Old Lutheran building at 1408 1st Ave. N, Moorhead.

North Dakota is a great place to live... Really. Local Author
Just ask Marc de Celle. By Andrew Jason Photos by J. Alan Paul Photography
The story of one man, his stories on how the kindness of Fargo changed his way of thinking and the book that showed how great of a culture we have in the North. There are a few things about Marc de Celle you should know.
1. He can talk as well as he can write. 2. He really does love Fargo as much as his book, “How Fargo of You”, would lead
you to believe.
3. Although “How Fargo of You” has become a major hit (it’s now the bestselling
book about North Dakota of the 21st century) he’s not done putting Fargo on the map.

“How Fargo of You will be
out in eBook format in June. It will be available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and any other service that carries eBooks.

T
HE DAY WE MET UP WITH DE CELLE, the weather was the exact
opposite of the stereotypical Fargo. It was the type of weather that De Celle would point out as why summer in Fargo is great; sunny, 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. De Celle did not come to Fargo for the weather, though. (As if anybody in their right mind would come to this town for the weather.) He
GO // Marc De Celle came up to the great north because, as he says in “How Fargo of You”, “it takes a village to raise a child.” That village wasn’t in Arizona where he was; he believed it was in Fargo. So when his wife suggested they pack the family up and move north, he said, “I was all in.”

“But we didn’t realize that the culture behind all the great statistics, whether it was low crime or high graduation rates, we didn’t realize how deep it went. I consider myself a culturalist… What does that mean? I truly believe that there are good cultures and bad cultures… I became fascinated with Fargo and what I was seeing because I didn’t think it was possible in the 21st century in modern America. It was like we’re in this high tech ‘Little House on the Prairie.’” That “Little House on the Prairie” mentality started to sink into De Celle. The niceness and genuineness of the people began to sink in, too. The culture of Northern Prairie kindness made such an impact on him that he

developed a phrase to describe the warmth and kindness of people here: How Fargo of You. The genesis of the saying, “How Fargo of You”, is hard to pinpoint exactly, but, according to De Celle, it began after he experienced something we’ve all come to dread: road construction. He relates in his book about how he was forced to sneak into a lane because of road construction. To his surprise, every other driver on the road merged into the lane way before they needed to, meaning nobody waited until the last minute to join into the other lane, thereby causing a holdup in traffic. “But I’d goofed. I was the only person having to cut in. I thought I’d get a dirty look or two from the drivers who’d been patiently waiting in line – but instead, the guy in the truck next to me was smiling widely, waving me ahead! That was when I began to realize how different Fargo was from any place I’d ever lived.” “I was in a mild state of shock. I’m not kidding you. I was going, ‘wow, this (culture) is way deeper than I imagined possible.’ I think that it was when I pulled into the driveway that day… I remember thinking of the line ‘ How Fargo of You’ … and I just started cracking up. I started telling friends my ‘How Fargo of You’ stories and it didn’t matter where they were from, they seemed to enjoy hearing them.”
FOR HIS NEXT BOOK, “Close Encounters of the Fargo Kind”, De Celle spent a few days with Fargo’s Mayor, Dennis Walaker, shadowing him as the flood fight was in full swing. During his time with the Mayor, Marc sent out a handful of tweets. This is what he had to say. (Note: NWS stands for National Weather Service.)
Apr. 23: Arrived to see Mayor at 1:30. "He's having lunch at Solid Waste," his assistant Kember tells me. Is there nothing he won't do for us?
GO // Marc De Celle
Another Planet Last November, De Celle was asked to speak to Fargo’s Fine Arts Club. As he was preparing his introduction, the phrase “Close Encounters of the Fargo Kind” came to mind to describe his experiences with Fargo kindness. Ever since coming to town, he’d always related his arrival to that of arriving on another planet. Thus, the title of his second book was born.
Local Author
The book will be similar to “How Fargo of You” but will feature many reader submitted stories that De Celle has written from a first person narrative. He hopes that this will continue to grow Fargo’s recognition and persona as America’s kindest city. However, he does have some concerns that the success of the book might attract a large number of people to come to town, thereby ruining the culture of Fargo. “I am severely concerned. I saw it happen in Phoenix, which was never as nice as Fargo, but when too many people moved in too fast, it got a lot worse very quickly. So in ‘Close Encounters of the Fargo Kind’, every chapter is preceded by a warning. ‘Don’t think you can just come to Fargo and everything will be fine.’ You can come here to visit. You shouldn’t plan on doing
any more than that. You should come to visit and see what it’s like and if it is what you think and if you think you’d fit in, then great… I don’t want to wreck the thing I’m celebrating by telling people that you’ve got to go to Fargo.”
person ask the same question. “Where are you from?” He began to realize that people were developing these relationship maps. By asking where someone is from, they’re able to connect to that person through someone else.
De Celle hopes to have “Close Encounters of
“It’s not a space-time continuum map, it’s a spacetime-family-community continuum where all this stuff is mapped out to who they know and where they know them from… I realized that all these people I was “THOSE MAPS ARE ONE OF THE listening to in my book signing lines were building these maps… They have these REASONS WHY EVERYONE huge fricking maps in their heads. There’s AROUND HERE IS SO MUCH MORE no one in California or Arizona, where I RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COMMUNITY come from, with maps like that. Those and the entire region than almost anyone maps are one of the reasons why everyone is where I come from. Everyone sort of around here is so much more responsible for the community and the entire region owns the whole place.” than almost anyone is where I come from. Everyone sort of owns the whole place.”
the Fargo Kind” done by the end of August. He is currently traveling around, collecting stories. Although he’s traveled across the state, listening to countless “How Fargo of you” stories, he’s still learning aspects of the culture that surprise him.
As is evident, De Celle’s not done putting Fargo on the map. He’s out there to show that there’s more to this city than a movie, blizzards and exaggerated accents. So after a couple of hours of conversation and photoshoots, he strolled out of the office. After all, he still has a book to finish.
Throughout the countless book signings De Celle has done, he’s listened to person after

It's almost a Fargo tradition that summer hasn't started until you've been to a FM RedHawks game. Now that the RedHawks are in season, it's the perfect chance to start your season. As if you need another good excuse why to go to a game, we gathered 10 exciting reasons to go check out a game at Newman Outdoor Field.

The suites section of Newman Outdoor Field got a major revamp over the summer. They added a bar and kitchen so all the food will now be cooked in-house. This will be called the High Point Bar and Grill. Now the people in the suites will be able to interact before, after or during a game.
They’ve really stepped up their game when it comes to promotions. Every game has great promotions which range from kids eat free to fireworks. One promotion we’re particularly excited for is on July 26 when they have their jersey giveaway. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive a replica RedHawks jersey.
This season is sure to be packed. Every year, Newman Outdoor Field draws thousands of fans from across the area. Last year was their second highest attendance for a season. This means you better act fast to get your hands on some tickets. To find their schedule and buy tickets, go to fmredhawks.com.

Fargo
There are those nights when you just don’t feel like leaving home. Well, now you’ll be able to enjoy the thrills and excitement of RedHawks games from the comfort of your home. All their home games will be streamed live on their website, fmredhawks. com. Now you have no excuse to miss any homeruns, double plays or no hitters.
The RedHawks have added two fireworks games to the schedule this year. So this year they’re doing five instead of three firework shows. On June 14 and 28, July 27, Aug. 2 and 30, there will be fireworks at the game. This is a popular event every year and attracts a large crowd. Grab the family, your significant other or your friends and make sure you check this out.

The RedHawks have added a weekly TV program with Inforum TV. This show will feature highlights and recaps. It can be seen on inforumtv. com. The games will also be broadcast on 740 AM, The Fan. Scott Miller is returning for his eighth year as calling play-byplay for the RedHawks. Maury Wills will once again be Miller’s sidekick.
Everyone has their favorites on the RedHawks. Many of those key players from previous years are returning. Fan favorites like Zach Penprase and Nic Jackson will be on the field to entertain the fans and hopefully, lead the team to a successful year.
The FM RedHawks is truly FargoMoorhead’s team. Games average around 3,800 people in attendance. It’s hard to find entertainment that’s cheaper, more family friendly and just plain fun than catching a game at Newman Outdoor Field.

This is true professional baseball. Last year, seven players were signed to the majors. That should express how good of players these guys are. Some of the players that were sold last year to Major League contracts include; Tom Boleska to the Marlins, Jon Gaston to the White Sox and Ryan Stovall to the Diamondbacks.
As if seeing a great baseball game isn’t reason enough to attend a RedHawks game, there will be some great entertainers coming to certain games. The mascot duo, Sweet Right Brothers, will perform on July 15, the Russian Bar Trio will awe fans on July 26 and, back by popular demand, Myron Noodleman is taking the field on Aug. 23.

thinking that No Murphy sounded like a cool name but then Go Murphy had a better ring to it. There are a lot of different versions of the story going around but that’s the official version.
FM: How did you guys get
started? Marcus: I was looking into
getting back into a band. I hadn’t been playing in any bands for quite a while and I missed it. I was looking for musicians in the area that also wanted to get something started in doing our own music and not doing the cover route. I had posted an ad on Facebook and actually Ryan’s (Dahl) girlfriend had said, ‘check with him.’ He was looking into doing something different and around the same time, this Ryan (Stetson) was looking into starting up something else. That’s how it was born… We basically call Cinco de Mayo our birthday. At least that’s when our name was born.
FM: Describe your music in a nutshell
for someone who doesn’t know anything about it. Ryan Dahl: We all grew up in the 90s and I think a lot of the grunge/ alternative was kind of ingrained on us, at least for me. I think a lot of that is what’s kind of seeping through. We all listen to a lot of varied genres of music but for whatever reason, when the three of us start writing music, it’s kind of what seems to seep out… I think that people are pulling out of it what they want to. I think that’s the greatest thing. We’re just doing what we want to. We’re not trying to cater to a specific genre. We are what we are. That’s how we do it.
FM: What’s the story behind the Music

FM: Tell us about the new album. Marcus: The album is called “A

one is Aristotle’s first law of identity. It kind of states that ‘you are what you are.’ It’s also a reference to a dear friend of mine’s sailboat. His boat was named ‘A is A’. Sadly, to the year today, Jeff lost his life. This is kind of a dedication to him and a remembrance because there are a lot of things… we sailed to Cuba and back. It was a crazy, crazy adventure and Jeff always struggled with identity and self. Everything seemed to come around full circle in the way the song was written. It was right after Jeff had died. I think that experience all kind of mixed with the different things that we had written our previous songs about and put in the album. It seemed to strike home. It’s a bit of a memorial to him. Luckily, these two guys (Ryan and Marcus) are cool with it. It’s a good way to remember him and that everyone struggles with who they are. It’s the acceptance of who you are that gets you forward in life. FM: What’s the hope for the future? Marcus: We’re trying to push this
stuff. Like I said, we all have jobs and families. We’re realists. It’s probably not going to be realistic to leave that behind and tour but we want to make a push to start visiting places in the Midwest that’s within a weekend’s drive. To play more shows out of the area. We’ve been working hard on getting some venues in Minneapolis and St. Paul. We have a couple things lined up for the summer… Ryan Dahl: As long as people 38 // fargomonthly.com

keep coming out to shows and keep showing interest, that’s what gets us going. Just as long as we can make music that people still listen to and enjoy, I think we’ll keep on doing it. Basically, for everybody that comes out to our show and listens to our CDs, that’s what allows us to keep doing what we’re doing… We’re very, very appreciative of everyone’s support. FM: So there are no dreams of
European tours? Marcus: I wouldn’t mind it. (Laughs) Together I think we’ve played in a total of 10-15 bands over the years. This is by far my most favorite band so I think this will go for a very long time, but I think in today’s technology and the way music is, I think there are different ways to do things than driving to California and back and playing for eight people. Ryan Dahl: It’d be nice to have our music in Europe, but our families are the other members of the band. If they can’t come with then it’s kind of a no go. FM: Have you started planning your
other EP yet? Marcus: Even before we were done with the last one we had a couple songs written that we really liked. Read the full interview:

An oyster bar in Fargo? What?!? While you may think the concept is crazy, you won’t be saying that after trying the food at the new JT Cigarro Lounge and Grill. Anthony Bachman is the man responsible for bringing this new food group to Fargo. The new JT Cigarro is the definition of upscale bar food. According to Bachman, 95 percent of everything is made from scratch and the menu features a variety of dishes ranging from oyster po’boys, salmon BLTs to feta cheese meatloaf. The whole idea is to provide the customer a quality meal while bringing the quick service of bar food; their goal

is to have a 15-minute ticket time for lunch. The challenge of mixing quality and speed comes with its own rewards and challenges. Although Bachman is originally from Langdon, ND, this isn’t his first foray into the world of cooking oysters. After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Minneapolis, he ended up working at a restaurant in San Diego where he learned how to work with the slimy and delicious mollusc. He came to JT Cigarro from Santa Lucia. He developed the new menu for JT’s. Although it is

This type of food works perfectly with Bachman’s cooking style. “When I first went to school, I wanted to do fine dining and then after my internship, I moved back to Minneapolis for a while and I worked for this restaurant called the Town Talk Diner, which was featured on ‘Diners, Drive-ins and Dives’. You’d think it’d be hard to get fresh oysters in Fargo but JT’s receives their oysters from Coastal Seafoods from Minneapolis. The oysters are received on a dayboat in Minneapolis and they’re delivered the next day to JT’s. •••

Last month... Spotlight Media teamed up with Cheney Middle School in West Fargo to work with their 8th grade class on bringing history alive. They worked with Tim Scully's social studies class in making a magazine based on a fictional but historical North Dakota city. Spotlight helped them design their "magazine" that they produced for their city. They will then take all those "magazines" and print them off for the students. LEARNING ABOUT
O| A| R
OF A REVOLUTION Jerry DePizzo WITH THE SAXOPHONIST FROM O.A.R.
INTERVIEW BY ANDREW JASON
Of A Revolution, or as most people know them as, O.A.R., formed the same way as many successful bands: in the basement
of their parent’s home. Since their formation in 1996, the band has grown at an incredible rate. They have found success with such hit songs as “Shattered” and “Love and Memories.” This energetic band will be performing at Bluestem Center for the Arts on June 26. Fargo Monthly caught up with Jerry DePizzo, the saxophonist for the band, to get the scoop on the inner workings of O.A.R.
54 // fargomonthly.com
FARGO MONTHLY: To start off with, can you tell us which of all your songs is your favorite? JERRY DEPIZZO: That’s a tough one. Honestly, I rotate through them. They take on more meaning. Things change. There’s a song that we did off of our record called “Anytime Now” called “James”, which I wrote with Marc (Roberge). At the time I had lost my grandfather, but it was a song about dealing with loss so I feel that one always hits close to home. It’s one that always has some extra power and meaning behind it… FM: You guys have so many hit songs but you also have many songs that have a large fan following. How do you handle that? JD: It’s great to have both, to be honest with you. It’s something special to have a song on the radio and to have a song that a lot of people connect with. We play the songs live and they end up getting stretched out. There’s always a live version that takes on a life of its own. It’s fun to adapt the more poppy songs for the live environment…
FM: We have to ask, was there actually a crazy game of poker? JD: There never was. It’s just a story about real life though. Marc was always trying to find something that everyone can connect to. I think it’s the camaraderie of sitting around a table and the pressure you feel. Poker has very little to do with the cards that you’re dealt but just sitting at the table and how you read them. Life’s kind of like that as well. FM: What’s your process of writing songs? Is it a collaborative effort or does everyone bring something else to the table? JD: It comes in a lot of different ways. Whatever gets the job done is probably the best and the simplest way to put that. One guy will bring something to the table. Maybe it’s creating a sound check with all of us. Maybe it’s an outside guy that will work on the song and then bring it to the table… FM: Tell us the story about the origin of the name O.A.R. JD: The origin of the name came
about when the boys were 15 or 16 years old and were really heavily influenced by reggae music and the spirit it had... Everyone was really inspired by that so we wanted to have a name that had the same kind of meaning. Of A Revolution was an ode to that spirit of reggae and island music. It’s obviously a mouthful. The most common response would be: “What’s your band name?” “Of A Revolution.” They would say, “What?” We would have to repeat it two or three more times so we shortened it down to O.A.R. We probably should have made the periods a little more prominent because everyone called us oar for a number of years. Through some very expensive marketing, O.A.R. stuck and that’s the name of the band… FM: Talk about the charity work O.A.R. has done. JD: We have something called the Heard the World fund where a portion of every ticket is allocated to this fund and the fund goes to benefit educational based programs throughout the country. We also have the Heard the World charity show that we do every year. We’ve been able to do some really great stuff with that… We also feel that we all have the moral obligation to give back to our veterans and our troops, in anyway we can. We partnered up with the USO to play overseas and play for the troops for the Iraq war. We raised awareness with organizations like the IAVA, Veterans Affairs
and things like that. A portion of the tickets of every one of our shows in the summer goes to veterans and their families.
“Of A Revolution was an ode to that spirit of reggae and island music.” FM: What’s next for you guys? JD: Right now, I’m in Brooklyn, NY where we’re working on the new O.A.R. record. It’s going to sound fantastic. We’re really excited about the way things are going. We’re excited to go out and play some of the stuff live this summer. We’re excited to get your way on June 26… I’ve been pent up all winter and spring working on music and stuff so we haven’t had a chance to get out and play a whole hell of a lot. FM: Any idea when the new album will be ready? JD: We’re going to be done with it by the summer or at least, through the summer, we’ll be done with it. As far as when it’s released, I leave that up to the people who wear suits and ties for a living. (Laughs) They’ll tell us when it’s time to get released. Our goal is to make a really great record, which we’re well on our way to do so I’m super excited about it.

THOMPSON SQUARE WITH
Shawna Thompson
INTERVIEW BY ELIZABETH ERICKSON
When they first
laid eyes on each other, Shawna and Keifer saw potential. The duo’s chemistry went beyond their marriage and transformed into Thompson Square. After twice being named “Vocal Duo of the Year,” Thompson Square’s hits include “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” and “If I Didn’t Have You.” The band will perform at the Venue at the Hub on June 28. Fargo Monthly spoke with Shawna Thompson to take a look at the band’s journey.
56 // fargomonthly.com
Fargo Monthly: How long have the two of you been together? Shawna Thompson: As Thompson Square, we’ve only been together about seven years, but Keifer and I have known each other for almost 17 years. FM: Was it love at first sight? ST: Yeah, you could say that. I know it sounds kind of cheesy, but we moved to Nashville the same week. We met at a singing competition. He walked in and there was something about him and I knew I wanted to meet him. Eventually, he came up and introduced himself and we’ve literally been together ever since. FM: What’s it like going to work every day as husband and wife?
ST: We have a lot of couples ask us, ‘my gosh how do you do it’. I don’t know how it works, but it just does... A big part of it is we absolutely love what we do and that relieves a lot of the stress of just normal jobs. Before, we were working 9 to 5 jobs that we both hated and now we’re both happy. We hardly ever fight. Every once in a while we have a spat on the bus, but nothing serious. FM: Do you remember the very first time you got up on stage and performed? ST: The very first time was at church in the children’s choir. I think I was probably four. I can’t remember what the song was; I just remember they taught us how to do some moves with our hands to look like butterflies (laughs). FM: How did you know that music was what you wanted to pursue? ST: I think the moment I realized that was at the country group, Alabama’s concert. I was five, and my aunt had somehow swung first row seats and just seeing the energy that they had and the energy the crowd had was very intriguing. Ever since that night in 1984 or ‘85, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. FM: Is this everything you hoped it would be? ST: Absolutely. The only difference is that I didn’t realize
how hard you have to work at it. I absolutely love this job. It’s my dream job. You work, work, work. You’re always on as far as the traveling and all that stuff. It can kind of wear you down, but when you get on stage it makes everything alright. FM: What’s been your favorite memory on tour? ST: There’s been some good ones. Probably the one that sticks out the most is when we did some tour dates with Darius Rucker, opening for him. He’s such as sweet guy. He was so sweet to us and invited us to go out on stage with him to perform a Hank Williams Jr. song and we did it maybe two or three nights. The third night, after we finished and walked off stage, it hit me how awesome that was that we were up on stage. And Darius hates being called ‘Hootie’ and I walked off stage and I looked at Keifer and I was like ‘We just sang with Hootie! That’s like the coolest thing in the world.’ And I got a little bit emotional, so that was a highlight for me. FM: If you could describe your relationship in a few words, what would they be? ST: Hilarious, energetic and loving. I think what makes it so special goes back to the music. The fact that we get to do what we love to do on a daily basis and we get to do it together, there’s nothing better than that. FM: What’s been your most embarrassing moment? ST: Let me think about this… I don’t want to say I haven’t had one yet because then it’ll happen! I guess at the CMT awards last year, the dress that I had on had fabric that would stick to you. So I told Keifer, I said ‘here’s the deal, if we happen to win, I’m going to stand up first and you’re going to
make sure I don’t have a wedgie going on.” That night I was a little embarrassed, praying I didn’t have a wedgie!
“I absolutely love this job. It’s my dream job.” FM: You’ll be performing here in late June. Have you ever been to Fargo? ST: I’ve never been to Fargo, but I’ve seen the movie! FM: What stereotypes do you have about Fargo? ST: No stereotypes. You guys like beer right? That’s probably the biggest one. And we love your accent (laughs). I’ve heard it’s really pretty there, so just being able to see new scenery in a place we’ve never been before will be great. FM: What’s your favorite song on your new CD? ST: That’s hard because it’s like picking your favorite kid! (laughs) We don’t have any kids, but I really love doing “If I Didn’t Have You.” There’s a special moment in the show where it’s a little bit different than the radio version and Keifer and I just enjoy the moment and we’re singing to each other, and every night when we’re up there I tell him that I love him.
