Big Risk...Big reward

T

his is our second issue of Fargo Monthly.

I will say I have never been more excited.

We took a big risk last month in releasing a completely new magazine and it h as proved to be the right decision. I have never, in my three years as a magazine publisher, seen as much recognition and progression in the time line of one month, than I did last month. The feedback has been amazing. To the right I put up some photos from our reader appreciation party. It was a total success and we learned a lot from all the comments.

I hope you read through this whole issue and try to recognize some of the creative photography techniques we are trying. Also find us on facebook and feel free to send us your suggestions for the January issue. We want to continue providing information based on your feedback. Enjoy.

What it is TAG is located next to Halberstadt’s in downtown Fargo on First Ave. It offers original T-shirts created by local artists as well as some shirts from Raygun, a company based out of Des Moines, Iowa that creates fun and unique shirts. So the question is, how can a store thrive when it’s dedicated to only selling T-shirts? When the T-shirts are like the ones on sale here, it’s pretty easy.

What made them do it The store was the brainchild of Jeff Knight and Joe Burgum. They came up with the idea of the store after Burgum took a trip down to Des Moines with his friend Greg Tehven. Burgum explained how that trip influenced them to create this store.

similar to Fargo. There’s a ton going on. A lot of cool excitement and energy. We met a guy named Mike Draper, who runs a T-shirt store (Raygun) in Des Moines.

After talking to him we began to throw out the idea of what it would be like to have some North Dakota T-shirts, Greg (Tehven) and I sat down with Jeff Knight, a local designer from Sundog, and we thought of some T-shirt ideas.”

What they’ve learned Burgum’s advice for those looking to start up their own business.

“Ask for help and ask questions. I don’t know everything and Jeff doesn’t know everything. This is definitely a result of a lot of collaboration and supporters. We’re very fortunate to have a lot of people who are excited to have us open, want to help us and are willing to give us advice.”

Some of the most talented musicians in town have come together to form this band that is playing “American music.”

Fargo Monthly caught up with Diane Miller and her new band to discuss Fargo’s incestuous music scene, torrid love affairs and the world premiere of her band’s name.

Steve Burket, Tom Johnson, Diane Miller and Jason Boynton come from a very eclectic background.

They all grew up listening to different genres of music. However, one thing that they do have in common is that, although most people would label their music as bluegrass, they don’t want to be tied down to one genre. After all, Boynton said it best when he pointed out that, “Our band looks like what America looks like. Our music is American.” With so many different backgrounds and personalities coming together, how can they not create awesome music?

FM: Hey guys. Here’s the most important question. What’s your band name?

Johnson: Diane Miller and the Silver Daggers. Let’s put the stamp on it.

FM: So Jason, I understand you’re a professor. Are you a professor of music?

Boynton: Nope, math.

FM: The coolest math professor out there (Laughs)?)

Boynton: I’m one of them.

Miller: That’s actually how I started dating Tom. He was teaching at MSUM. Johnson: When we first met, I was a student, but when we started dating I was a professor there and she was one of my students… Shhh… (Laughs)

FM: We’ll keep that on the “hush-hush” (Laughs). You’re all involved in so many bands. Can you talk about how that diversity affects you?

Miller: That’s one of the unique things about us. We come from diverse backgrounds. I grew up listening to hip-hop music, indie rock, folk and even classical standards… That’s one of our spiels, that we have a diverse number of influences.

Johnson: Steve and I come from jazz and roots music. We played jazz in college then we got out and we played a lot more on the bluegrass side. We played with Johnson Family Band and Inside Out Strings. Steve was actually the original mandolin player for the Johnson Family Band…

FM: So you don’t like to be tied down to one genre?

Burket: There are a lot of sounds out there and it’s hard to pick just one.

Miller: Because our instrumentation is so bluegrassy it’s easy to put us in that category.

Johnson: At no time do we ever say, “That’s not bluegrass enough.” When I played in the

Johnson Family Band, we kept it pretty bluegrass. We’re not trying to be a bluegrass band…

FM: What’s the hope for this band ? Do you want to go somewhere or are you thinking, “This is just another band” ?

Johnson: We started recording an EP. Hopefully this EP will get out there and we can use that to record an LP, a full-length album. We have enough material. It’s just the money.

FM: What does Fargo mean to you ?

Miller: I’ve lived in Fargo since 1998 so I pretty much call it my hometown. I love the community. Because of Fargo I never would have been able to open for John C. Reilly. There are definitely opportunities and there’s a really good music scene here.

Boynton: I can definitely say that I was scared to move here from Florida. It’s definitely the best thing that could have happened to me.

FM: Talk about the music scene in Fargo.

Johnson: I think music, in general, has had so many influences that people aren’t like, “this is going to be bluegrass. This is going to be rock and roll. This is going to be hip-hop.” Everything is kind of melding into different influences and that hopefully will create a more unique experience for original music. It seemed like in the past that people were like, “This is this type of band.

This is a punk band and this is a bluegrass band and they don’t meet up.”

Burket: We’ve tried experimenting by mixing up shows. We did a show with Sleeping in Gethsemane, which is a metal punk rock band. It was interesting to see the two different crowds come together. We had completely different people’s mind sets.

I thought it worked.

FM: Do you find that, in Fargo, it’s a lot of the same people who are creating the music scene ?

Boynton: Yeah, it’s pretty incestuous (Laughs).

Burket: There’s also the younger kids that are coming up like the Vistas and Tiny Moving Parts. It’s still growing. We’re getting older and the younger bands keep coming in.

Johnson: And they never show enough respect (Laughs).

Burket: Well, did we ever show enough respect (Laughs)?

FM: Thanks guys for taking the time. We really appreciate it.

ext time the lights go up on the Bison Football team, take a moment to say, “Thank you, Rob.” Who? I’m talking about Rob Sobolik, the General Manager of the Fargodome, and right now you’re in his building.

He got his start in 1992 working for the Fargodome parking department while he was going to school over at Moorhead State. It was a part-time job that helped pay rent. When he graduated with an accounting degree, he moved up to the food and beverage department and worked various jobs there. He took over that department and event services in ’95 and later became the assistant general manager in 2001. He landed his current job in May of 2004… Who said you can’t climb the company ladder?

He’s a very busy man — his phone was buzzing so much during my interview that I’m surprised he had any battery left. without burning too much daylight, here’s what we found out about the man who holds up the dome .

FM: Without being too blunt, what is it…

RS: “What do I do? [laughs] A little bit of everything.

My primary responsibilities are managing the entire facility: Operating budgets, capital budgets, booking the facility, those sorts of things.

Obviously things like NDSU

It’s also my job to have the relationship with the promoters and the agencies out there for different shows, such as the Mannheim Steamroller and the Taylor Swift date we just announced for next September. All of those, plus events like high school

football tournaments, I’m the guy that they negotiate with.”

FM: In regards to performers, do you approach them or do they approach you?

RS: “Both. Fargo has proven to be a very strong market for most acts, and really it’s

off the beaten path from a touring perspective. We’re not a “must play.” There are a lot of agencies and promoters out there that look at it, and if they have an artist who is playing 40 or 50 dates, they’re probably not going to play Fargo. There are about 40 major markets in the nation — places like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, fargomonthly.com // 29

Minneapolis, etc. What we’re considered is a secondary or a tertiary market, however that sells us a bit short. That makes it kind of hard, and with our facility, we’re already busy. We have a very solid line-up of annual events that we come close to breaking even with, before we take on the extras.”

RS: “The building is owned by the City of Fargo, and they appoint seven individuals as the Fargodome Authority.

They are the governing board of the building. They and the city have contracted with Global Spectrum, which is a private management company,

RS: “It really depends on everything that’s going on — absolutely full-time plus. A typical day for me, usually I will have some meetings planned and scheduled, but it’s fair to say that 50 percent of my day is spent responding to things that happened either that morning or the night before.”

RS: “It’s more of the flashy and catering side of things that we miss out on. You don’t have a lot of groups that want to

FM: What kind of hours do you put into this job?

FM: Does anything

keep you up at night?

RS: “Everything. [laughs] Maybe the finances, or ‘Oh crap, I forgot to call this person,’ or ‘Hey, I should really reach out to this person.’ Some nights I sleep like a baby and some nights I don’t sleep. It’s a fast-paced environment where things are always changing. There’s always something that has to get done; everybody thinks they have an emergency. It’s interesting.”

FM: Does that phone keep buzzing at the dinner table?

RS: “Yep!”

FM: So you never really get to turn the switch off then?

RS: “It just depends on what it is too. In the email world you’re always connected, which is both good and bad. They don’t know if I’m responding from a pontoon, an icehouse on the lake, from the middle of the woods or sitting at my desk. It’s something you have to be accustomed to in this business, plus we’re dealing with people from the east coast to the west coast. They usually understand the time difference, but then there are times when they have to have something now. You have to have a patient

family who understands it. This also allows me to be at different places throughout the day. If my child has a doctor’s appointment, I can go there and still do my job.”

FM: What do you like about this job?

RS: “I wouldn’t call it rubbing shoulders. It’s fair to say, working in this industry for so long now, I might have a bit of a jaded edge toward entertainers. It’s important to treat them well, and we do. When you go home at night, you like to enjoy the comforts of your home. But when you look particularly from an entertainer’s perspective, these people are on the road for months at a time. We treat our backstage area as their home, so

RS: “It’s really neat, and you feel a sense of accomplishment, when you’re involved with these events. When the lights go off for the introduction of the NDSU football team, and you hear all the noise and the crowd, it’s great to know you had a part in that.

Now, the other part is hoping the lights come back on, and when they come back on it’s on

FM: Do you rub shoulders with any big names?

to speak. You don’t have people come and bother you in the middle of your house, so we give them the privacy they deserve.

I prefer to be walking around the venue, checking different areas and talking to people in the crowd; there are other nights when it’s just been a long week, and I’ll barricade myself in the office at night and listen to the radio, or have the TV on in the background for noise and work on things. Some nights I’ll have the lights off, TV on and just veg.”

STAND UP FOR COMEDY IN FARGOMOORHEAD Did you hear the one about the comedians that got together to do a photo shoot for Fargo Monthly? Sorry, we don’t actually have a punch line for this. Comedy in Fargo has taken off recently. There has been an onset of comedians taking the stage at many venues around the area. We gathered a few of them at our studio to share some of their best jokes. Read on, and you may finally discover why the chicken crossed the road.

KAMIKAZE SNOWMEN You can see Kamikaze Snowmen perform on Dec. 27 at Big D’s in Fargo with Valley Meadows and the Dirty Curls.

Imagine this if you will.

There’s this monsterukuleles factory. On one side of the factory they make ukuleles, but on the other side there are monsters. So one day, all the workers at the ukuleles factory were singing a song about how there hasn’t been an accident in three days.

Well, needless to say, a monster then comes and kills everyone.

No, this isn’t the plot to the next Monsters Inc., movie. This is an example of one of the Kamikaze

Snowmen’s songs. Josh Trumbo, Paul Tebben and Terence Brown II make up this musical comedy group that has been together almost 15 years now.

How they got started: “We came up with the band name in 1998 and it was shortly after that we gave out CDs to people. People listened to them, liked them and paid us for them. We were as shocked as everyone else was (Laughs) “ How often they write songs: “We’ve created 100 new songs in the last three years.

We perform everything from the

bizarre to the sort of serious. We do all different styles. Sometimes they’re based on a concept. Like what would happen if a funk band was created to do a public service announcement to stop sexting.”

Lyric that sums them up: “The Key Store, where you can buy a key for any lock (keys do not actually work in locks.)”

Inspirations: “Classics like Abbott and Costello and The Marx Brothers, artists like They Might Be Giants and “Weird Al” Yankovic and local comedians like Adam Quesnell, JD Provorse and Will Spottedbear.”

ADAM QUESNELL You can see him perform at most open mics in Fargo and he MCs at Courtney’s.

Adam Quesnell has been doing standup for the last three years.

It’s hard to pinpoint his brand of comedy but the best way might be to say that it’s goofy and dark.

That makes sense though since his on stage character can’t relate to anyone. However, in real life, Quesnell, like all these other comedians, has high hopes of making it big and turning this into a professional career but he has discovered that being a comedian is not an easy career path.

Most difficult part of being a comedian: “The most difficult part is people who set out to make a living at comedy and how tenacious they have to be on the road and how many shows they have to do. That’s the hardest part about making a living as a comedian. People can do it. Comedy can be a good job. It’s just a lot of hard work, networking and a lot of travel.”

You may not know this about Janna Syverson, but she loves cats.

This joke is how Janna opens up each of her comedy acts and it sums her up pretty well.

Her comedy set touches on race and obscure things (afterall, she’s Native American-Norwegian, or a “Norwedian.”) For the last two years, Syverson has been perfecting her comedy act.

She hopes to take her unique comedy act on the road.

Describe your comedy: “Everybody’s humor is different so that’s a difficult question to answer… I kind of touch on race and obscure things.”

When she fell in love with it: “I work with the drag, burlesque and comedy and we put on shows for local charities. We call ourselves “Action etc.” We did a Halloween show and I dressed up as a Minnesota mom and I rapped for everyone. I got the audience involved. That was probably the most fun I’ve had.”

Will Spottedbear grew up in Pittsburgh. One day, his mom sat him down and told him something that would change his life. He tells it best so here’s his description of this life-changing event.

“My mom told me I was Native American, when I was 10.

However, she told me it like I had a disease. ‘Son, you have the Native. I’m sorry. You’re going to grow feathers in no time.’ That’s why I like Pontiacs. I found out when I was 10, and I never knew my dad… Well, because some stereotypes are true (Laughs)”

Don’t let his comedy fool you.

Spottedbear is proud of his heritage. That’s why he adopted his father’s name and started his career in comedy.

How he got started: “I was in the military and I was always considered the wise-ass of the group. They said I should do stand-up so when I got out, I figured I’d try it. It was pretty fun, so I kept doing it.”

Theory about comedy: “I play as much to the audience as I can. If the audience isn’t enjoying themselves, then what’s the point.”

What made him like the Native American lifestyle: “It was interesting to meet that side of my family. When I started doing comedy full-time, I started using my grandma’s last name.

One: I thought it was a really awesome last name. Two: It got me to meet a lot of my family that I wouldn’t have met so people would know where I’m from. I also didn’t want to accidentally sleep with a cousin. That’s always a fear when you don’t have a dad (Laughs).”

These are some funny folks. This troupe of roughly 10, performs all over the U.S., and will switch from a British to a Spanish accent in the same sentence.

They’re the perfect way to put a smile on your face.

ome people like to say it’s “Concordia’s gift to the Midwest.” We’re talking about their annual Christmas Concerts of course. Arguably the richest Christmas tradition in the region, these performances have been a staple of winter in the valley for 86 years now. In the mid-‘70s they took the show on the road to Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, the primary performing facility for the Minnesota Orchestra. The concerts have even been broadcasted

nationwide a number of times on PBS. So what makes them so special? For starters, they tend to take on a worship sort of feel; there isn’t applause between every piece. There is a constant stream of music and narration enhanced by visual art. It’s a compelling mix that brings thousands of people coming back year after year.

We sat down with three gentlemen who play major roles in bringing the concerts together year-in and year-out, and here’s what they had to say:

René Clausen Conductor of the Concordia Choir His role: For 27 years he has come up with the theme of the Christmas concert.

“In a certain way I guess you could call me the chef, but there are lots of cooks.”

Clausen starts considering new themes as soon as he’s hung up his tailcoat from the last concert.

“It’s not just a group of words. It has to somehow portray the message of the concert and yet also have a poetic sense about it: A sense of grace about the title that gives it definition, color and purpose. If someone reads the theme of the concert this year, ‘All are Welcome,’ it should create a certain image and invitation to want to come to the concert.”

He admits that “All Are Welcome” isn’t overtly Christmas, but assured that a bulk of the music would be Christmas music; it is a Christmas concert, after all. He says it will evoke a sense of joy and community though, regardless of one’s walk of life. When put together, it should provide an escape from the mundane, as well as the commercialized take on Christmas — thanks largely to the performers rather than himself, Clausen insists.

“The phrase I like to use is that I celebrate Christmas yearround. Literally, as soon as we put one Christmas concert away we start planning the next, and start improving for the next year.”

There are approximately 450 music students at Concordia, some of whom begin working at the start of fall semester.

Moe estimates over 10,000 hours go into it each year from the students alone. That being said, the payoff is huge.

“For many of them this is a life-changing event. They get to be part of something that is beyond anything they would be able to accomplish as an individual. To be part of this ensemble of performers that can sing beautiful, sacred Christmas music to about 18,000 people, it’s a pretty powerful experience for the performers.”

Where strangers become friends, and friends are family.

“There’s a lot of space to work with — it’s over 170 feet long — but when you’re dealing with these different hymns it doesn’t take very long to fill it up,” he said.

He traces drawings on his computer — a process that takes so much time that he doesn’t bother keeping track of hours anymore.

Considering Johnson has wanted to be a liturgical artist since childhood, being a part of the concerts has been rewarding on more than a few levels.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to inspire people. The background is just a side note; the sound is phenomenal. To have a little part to add to it is a great scenario for an artist because it’s really a one of a kind experience.”

t’s easy to tell that Toby Reichart is passionate about what he does. He grew up in Las Vegas and has worked around the world as a chef. He moved to Fargo to make the Beefsteak Club one of the best spots for fine dining in Fargo. Reichart has done just that. Some of his stories will have your jaw dropping, while others will leave your sides in pain from laughing.

We hope you’re ready to hear some tales from the road from this eccentric chef.

How did you get involved in cooking?

I grew up in Las Vegas. I needed a job. There was nobody at home.

Somebody needed to work. I went to work in 1973 at the Riviera Hotel and worked there up until the ‘80’s. At that time Howard Hughes was still around and Vegas was coming through a lot of changes. I’ve worked almost every house in Vegas.

What did you love about it so much?

I think the kitchen is something that challenges you not only mentally and physically but it also challenges every sense that you would think of in business. So you have to think about every single aspect in business… You have to do all this work and you don’t know if anybody is going to come in and eat or you don’t know if a thousand people are going to come in to eat and you end up running out of everything…

Tell us one of your crazy stories.

I did an amazing party at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It was for some big-time high rollers. We helicoptered everything in. Put together a full meal buffet. These people rafted down and we had a full meal with white coat chefs. The whole deal… That was crazy. The amount of money we were spending was crazy.

Do you miss working at those kinds of places?

Somewhat. It’s cool in a way. But, ‘Vegas has bad money’ is what I tell everyone. It comes from people losing.

Together We Rise Benefit Concert 8th at 9:30 p.m.

This concert is being put on by MSUM’s Public Relations Student Society to raise money for Together We Rise, an organization dedicated to working with foster care children around the nation.

All proceeds raised from this event will be used for the Together We Rise program called Sweet Cases.

The Sweet Cases will be given to foster care children right here in Fargo-Moorhead. The Sweet cases include a duffel bag, personal hygiene kit, jump rope, journal, chalk, crayons, coloring books, a stuffed animal, a blanket and a towel. Basically every $20 raised will pay for one Sweet Case.
