The second program is the Ronald McDonald Family Room located within the neonatal intensive care unit at Essentia Health. This room functions as an extended waiting area, complete with a shower, kitchenette, play area, and lounge. Volunteers keep the room stocked with snacks and coffee, and they are available to answer questions and provide support to families with a hospitalized child.

Round-Up at McDonald’s

The only thing better than enjoying the most delicious french fries is knowing you're helping others at the same time. On your next visit to any of the ten McDonald’s locations in the FargoMoorhead area, choose to “Round-Up” your order to the nearest dollar or add your spare change to the collection bin.

"The McDonald's Round-Up Program is a way for customers to donate to our local Ronald McDonald House—it's a great way to give families the funds to have a safe place to stay and not have to worry about the other day-to-day stuff," Fargo-Moorhead McDonald's Franchisee Co-Owner Emily Cook said.

Your contribution supports Fargo's Ronald McDonald House and goes right to work helping families in the community when they need it most.

TempLink offers the cold storage industry a new solution for temperature monitoring

hroughout the age of technology, there have been individuals who looked at conventional methods and sought to create something better and make people's lives easier—Travis DeJong is one of those people. DeJong first created TempLink in 2018, later launching it in 2019 as a wireless and user-friendly solution for commercial temperature monitoring. With over 30 years of experience in the commercial refrigeration industry, DeJong wanted to create a product that was simple to use and could be easily integrated into a variety of food and beverage industries. That's why he invented TempLink—the most reliable and user-friendly temperature monitoring solution on the market.

Harnessing the power of LoRaWAN

One of DeJong's first key focuses in developing TempLink was to create a reliable gateway for connectivity. Most of the products in the industry were running on Wi-Fi, which posed many challenges for a consistent stream of data. With Wi-Fi systems easily overloaded, monitoring systems would often get kicked off the network.

Instead, DeJong integrated TempLink with LoRaWAN—the most reliable connectivity system in the industry. With a performance rating that is second to none, LoRaWAN eliminates the common

headaches Wi-Fi-based systems have.

"The ease of the customer navigating through this is what sets TempLink apart; they don't need any IT experience to operate our product," Travis said. "Integrating TempLink into your operation is super simple, self-explanatory, and easy to walk through."

In addition to being more reliable, LoRaWon reduces energy usage, has a greater range of connectivity, is scalable, and is more secure.

Travis DeJong is the founder, inventor, and product specialist at TempLink. He has a 34-year background in commercial refrigeration, working at Dakota Refrigeration for 20 years, and now brings his expertise to TempLink in sensor application and system operation. Outside TempLink, DeJong teaches at M State Tech College (where he graduated) and enjoys hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities.

Fargo native Gary Tharaldson II attended NDSU for Business Management and later helped launch TempLink in 2023. As the CEO, Tharaldson helps guide the TempLink team to offer the best products and service to customers in Fargo and beyond. Outside work, Tharaldson enjoys days at the lake, fishing, and vacationing.

Pleasanton, CA, native Nick Clark is the President of TempLink. He holds a bachelor's degree in Supply Chain and Value Management from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, where he currently resides. Nick enjoys golf, hunting, fishing, traveling, and spending time with family. Nick brings valuable expertise to TempLink from his logistics work at Lockheed Martin, where he managed repair and return processes for F-16 fighter jets across five countries.

1. Connect via ethernet or cellular TempLink's Gateway offers two options to getting set up: ethernet and cellular. For maximum connectivity and speed, take advantage of the Gateway's ethernet port. However, if an ethernet option isn't available in your space, the Gateway can also be set up using a cellular connection.

Need help? TempLink's team discovery meetings walk you through everything you need to know to get connected.

2. Pair up to 99 sensors

Users can pair up to 99 sensors per Gateway—no operation is too large or small to utilize TempLink. TempLink can seamlessly scale as your business scales.

3.

200-foot range

Thanks to the power of LoraWAN, TempLink's sensors offer an impressive signal range of up to 200 feet from the Gateway.

How TempLink adds value to your business

In the food service industry, risk management is everything. TempLink understands that protecting your product in storage is a vital part of your operation, that's why their ultimate mission is to provide you with value through automation and efficiencies. "Our system provides an insurance policy for you," Tharaldson said. "We also eliminate manual labor costs by automating logs. The food and beverage service industry is required to log refrigeration/freezer temperatures three times a day —our system does it automatically for you."

Additionally, TempLink generates logs to export so your operation can stay on top of FSMA guidelines more efficiently.

Getting Started

How the TempLink Ecosystem Works

Not only is TempLink a powerful and easy product to use, the TempLink team has made the onboarding process easy and painless. Once you've purchased your TempLink products, their customer success team sets up your account and dashboard. This is where you can customize your sensor's names, set temperature range controls, and customize alert settings.

photos by Andrew Stone

Gateway

The LoRaWAN Gateway receives the information from the sensors and transmits the data back to the customer's dashboard.

High-Temp Probe

The High-Temp Probe is great for taking ambient readings of a grill or smoker to ensure the item is being cooked at the correct temperature. You can also take probe readings of the food item as well.

Waterproof Sensor

Waterproof Sensors are great for equipment or areas that you need to wash down with a hose or pressure washer. They also offer a longer range due to the antenna.

TempLink's sensors and Gateway communicate through LoRaWAN, the most cutting-edge and high-frequency technology on the market. Some additional benefits of LoRaWAN include a longer range of connectivity, a more stable connection (vs Wi-Fi or Bluetooth), less interference of other frequencies, and an overall more reliable solution for consumers.

Standard Sensor

Standard Sensors are great for equipment or areas that won't be exposed to water.

Leak Detector

The Leak Detector is great for detecting any moisture that may be present where the sensor rope is placed. It is best to place the Leak Detector in areas that are prone to water damage.

"Our school district was looking for something to replace the old paper temperature logs on our refrigeration equipment so we could save on staff labor while improving the accuracy and reliability of the recordings. The temperature monitoring system from TempLink has helped us to maintain our refrigeration equipment at 22 kitchen sites within the food service department. The ability to view live temperature recordings online and review past recordings has been helpful in identifying equipment problems."

"We especially like the ability to customize the contact names for alert messages on each piece of equipment, and to select to receive emails or text messages for the alerts. This keeps the building staff informed and has been streamlined so that on-call maintenance staff will be notified and can address any issues after hours. Having all of our refrigeration equipment monitored 24/7 has given us the peace of mind so we can prevent the loss of food product or spoilage due to equipment failures."

"I see TempLink as a great opportunity for businesses. Here at Eventide, we have a lot of fridges, freezers, vaccines, and meds to keep regulated with temperature, and there's a lot of dollars in there to be lost. By having TempLink in place to alert us, we can get onsite and take care of issues right away—this will be a huge saving for us on the backend. It's amazing we didn't have this in place sooner!"

"The experience of working with TempLink has been great—their team has been very helpful, and we are excited to continue to implement TempLink more and more here at Eventide."

Frederick Edwards Jr. is a man who answers to many names; husband, father, poet, teacher, artist, speaker, mentor, entrepreneur, advocate, leader— to name a few. This spring, Frederick answered to another title, Bush Fellow.

What is it?

The Bush Fellowship, awarded by the Bush Foundation, is a prestigious grant aimed at nurturing leadership and fostering largescale, equitable change across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and the 23 Native nations within these states. The fellowship offers up to $100,000 over one to two years for recipients to pursue tailored leadership development plans. These plans could include further education, networking, and other resources— all to enhance their ability to lead impactful changes in their communities.

Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process and are evaluated on leadership potential and a compelling vision for future impact by a panel of alumni, staff, and community leaders. Only 24 leaders are chosen annually, making the fellowship both competitive and prestigious. Recipients are not chosen for specific projects but rather for their potential to achieve broader societal change.

rederick's story began in Minnesota, alongside nine brothers and sisters on the north side of Minneapolis.

"I grew up in the hood. Not like, 'Oh, this is a rough neighborhood.' Like I grew up really in the trenches," Frederick said. "I think it gave me not only a sense of street smarts but also a bit of wittiness. I think I'm a lot more understanding about certain people's situations, so I have a heart for homeless folks, those who have been incarcerated, and those who just don't fit into whatever the 'fit in' is—I have a heart for those people."

As the youngest of 10 kids and growing up in the environment he did, Frederick was exposed to an array of different cultures and experiences through his community and family. You can imagine the culture shock he had when he moved to Fargo in 2014 to attend North Dakota State University (NDSU).

"I started classes the first day I got here. I thought I was going to school in Montana, that South Dakota and

North Dakota were the two bigger towns in Montana. I'm like 'Where's the cliffs, the mountains,' he said. "I had only heard of urban farming. I had only seen farmers who had a local [farm] to restaurant type of vibe. My freshman year, we were in dorms with people who were pig farmers and cow farmers and so when I told people I don't eat pork—you can imagine. They were like, 'That's an option?'"

This was Frederick's first introduction to the state, and while the shared experience of being at college for the first time helped to create a buffer and sense of community for students, each has their own unique influences that they carry with them. For Frederick, this culture shock of a community drove him to seek out a sense of familiarity, and he made it where he couldn't find it.

The university's Black Student Association (BSA) was no longer active when Frederick arrived at NDSU, so he set out to help bring that back—and that was only the beginning.

"At NDSU, we didn't have a whole lot of cultural experiences, things, or places to be, and so that's when I started doing events. I didn't even know I was good at events," Frederick said. "And then I did my TEDx Talk."

Continued

In 2017, Frederick got on stage at the TEDxNDSU event and bared his soul and story to the community. The talk, titled "Why I Must Speak Out About Racial Discrimination," took listeners through Frederick's journey of growing up in north Minneapolis and the facts of life that came with it, devasting and beautiful. He talked about his experience as a Black man. And, he pleaded for conversation. He asked listeners to reflect on racial discrimination, coming to them as a man who had experienced loss and grief. He spoke with confidence and conviction as he reminded those listening that no matter what you look like, your experience or skin

color, there's work to be done— and that we all can play a part in that.

Frederick addressed topics like gun violence, grief, racial discrimination, and ignorance— all things that are avoided in conversation because simply, they're uncomfortable. And he did it in a way that held people's attention and encouraged them to ask questions and discuss. While sparking this in others, he had unlocked something within himself too. He had found enjoyment and fulfillment in organizing, leading, and speaking at events, and he was good at it.

"In 2014-2015, a friend of mine was murdered by the police, Jamar Clark. That's exactly five years from George Floyd. So there was a lot of that happening in my city [of Minneaoplis] while I was also doing these things here," Frederick said. "And so for me, I thought, 'You started BSA, you did TEDx, but what are you doing for the youth in this area? You know what it means to lose people, you know what it means to be at a sense of loss and grief.' So I started to do these keynotes inside schools, I would go to Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, I did a commencement speech at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, spoke at Youth Works helping homeless youth, and did all these different speaking things—and I wasn't charging anybody. It was just passion."

Through community connections and community encouragement, Fred's Dissonance was founded.

The organization is all about bringing people together and celebrating what makes us different. Founded by Frederick, with a strong focus on amplifying the voices of the Global Majority, which includes people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dualheritage, indigenous to the global south, and those who have been racialized as 'ethnic minorities', the organization aims to foster an educated, enlightened world that connects people through shared experiences and cultural exchanges.

With a committed team, Fred's Dissonance, which operates under the wing of The Human Family, has successfully curated events that resonate with community values and the need for inclusive spaces. From Juneteenth celebrations with music, dance, and art, to Fargo Got Talent where

Photo provided by Frederick Edwards Jr.

local kids and college students show off what they can do, the events are designed to be low-cost and accessible, adhering to a "donate what you can" policy to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent participation.

In essence, Fred's Dissonance continuously works towards a future where every member of the community feels valued, heard, and supported. Their extensive array of events and educational programs speak to the diverse community and provide a platform for people to celebrate and contribute to a collective, progressive future.

With Fred's Dissonance getting its start, Frederick himself was embracing his role as a voice in the community and beyond. After graduating from NDSU with a bachelor of science in psychology, he started contracting with event work and poetry readings. He worked with the City of Fargo to host a Martin Luther King celebration and continued to grow that relationship into today. Now, Frederick, through Fred's Dissonance, is the primary curator for the city's MLK celebrations and he also heads the Juneteenth events across the state.

This summer, Fargo held its fifth annual Juneteenth event hosted by Fred's Dissonance. It was also the second annual Juneteenth celebration in Bismarck, ND and Moorhead, MN, as well as their first annual event in Jamestown!

In addition to his work with Fred's Dissonance, Frederick worked with Youthworks North Dakota. He has also been deeply involved with the Science Museum of Minnesota as a member of the Racial Justice STEAM Collective (RJSC), which is museum programming focused on integrating social justice themes into STEM education. Frederick has contracted with them to lead and conduct racial justice summits around the Minnesota and North Dakota region to teach kids about how STEM and racial justice are collectively correlated.

Notably, as part of Youthworks programming, and what eventually became his thesis, Frederick, along with J'Neil Gibson, co-founded Umoja Writing Workshops—a 16-week program that provides primarily BIPOC students a constructive outlet for expression. These weekly workshops, held at various Fargo public schools, led writing exercises, cultural discussions, and music programming to improve student engagement, reduce truancy, and resolve conflicts. These classes weren't serving as just another student engagement hour, Frederick saw— the programming was changing young lives.

"Me and J'Neil Gibson met right before COVID, literally right before COVID," Frederick said. "J'Neil was this guy working with homeless youth who was like, 'We want to give students an opportunity to learn about Juneteenth. I'm from Stockton, CA, can you and me connect?' And I'm like, hell yeah we can connect. We connected and developed the [Umoja] programming in nine months and that program I ended up arguing to be my thesis. COVID happened and we were allowed to go into schools—we were the only program allowed to go into school. We were—masks on, writing poetry, connecting with these kids."

Since 2020, Umoja's programming has developed safe, inclusive, real places for youth in the classroom. The program supports students in positive development by fostering a sense of belonging, enhancing soft skills such as vulnerability, empathy, and expression, and above all, cultivating a strong sense of unity.

In 2021, Frederick won the Waterers Cultural Bearers Award,

awarded by the organization, Racing Magpies. The recognition goes to individuals who work to bring culture into their community, in Frederick's case, he referred to his culture bearing as Afrofuturism, which is what he works to introduce to and explore within the FM community.

In January of this year, Umoja Inc. moved from being a part of Youthworks programming to an independent nonprofit. The team made the decision, explaining that

while they respect and value the work done while Umoja operated under YouthWorks, it was time for Umoja Inc. to pursue a different approach. With a focus on prevention, holistic development, and leadership for the youth, the focus is now solely on Umoja Inc.

Developing and leading both Umoja and Fred's Dissonance over the years has filled Frederick's cup, in both a way to serve the youth and the community at large.

Afrofuturism explores the intersection of Black culture, science, and technology through culture, philosophy, and history. Often incorporating, literature, music, visual arts, film, and dance, Afrofuturism can examine the past, question the present, or imagine an optimistic future, and is meant to inspire a sense of pride in their audience—Frederick's work in a nutshell. He said he likes the idea of asking, "How do we think collectively about the future 100 years from now, and are black people in that future that you think about?"

Photo provided by Frederick Edwards Jr.

Q&A

"I'm living so much in my purpose when it comes to the Umoja writing workshops, and then Frederick's Dissonance is like this side hobby. Can I introduce people to sober fun activities where everything isn't beer and tequila shots? At the same time, how do we as a community, who know very little about each other if we're not from here, how do we cultivate and build community? That's been my biggest thing," he said.

Frederick's work may not come as a surprise when you consider who he has looked up to in his life—his father being a local apostle and his mother being a former gangster from Chicago turned community caregiver—his work really makes sense. Frederick and his family have faced some family health scares in the last few years, including most recently, his father's stroke.

"I always keep thinking to myself, like, do you want to work until heart attack or stroke? Or do you want to fill your cup up and then be at the best of your ability, so then you can also return that to kids? And that's where the Bush Fellowship comes into play," Frederick said.

Last year, Frederick applied to the Bush Foundation for a fellowship. The main goal he laid out in the application was to return to school to pursue his doctorate.

Photo provided by Frederick Edwards Jr
I've lost 43 friends, shot and killed. That's an extensive, different type of cyclical grief that I have to deal with. So, getting a grief doula and having talk therapy, things that I could never afford, now are things that I have the opportunity to do. And even getting my educational doctorate—I never thought I would have a master's, I never thought I would make it past the age of 18... So, for me, it was understanding that I had to get out of this war room of work and output which is a very North Dakota way of living—you are measured by how much you work and how fast you work. And it's almost never about how much heart or intention you put into things."

The whole idea of the Bush Fellowship is that its awardees are already proven changemakers, discussion-havers, and culture-bearers—now, they have permission in a sense (along with funding and support) to take a step back and invest in themselves. Through the award, they are empowered to grow personally and professionally in their leadership skills with the overarching goal of a larger community impact. Instead of focusing the award and its perks on an organization or foundation, it's focused on the individual leader.

"So, if I want to change the culture and community here, [I have to invest in myself]; and by change, I don't mean it's terrible, what I mean is we always have work to do to be a better community and more inclusive," Frederick said.

The application process took about seven to eight months.

After the initial application in the fall, about 100 semifinalists are announced in November. Then, foundation staff members choose up to 36 finalists to move on and announce in February. He laid out his plan and was honest.

"With the changes that I was going through, I need rest. I need racial healing rest; take out the race, as a man, I need masculine healing; take out gender and race, just as a human, I want to be able to connect and build rapport with my community and people around me, and not always being 'Fred, the guy who's the founder of this and co-founder of that, and can you help me get to here?' I think I'm oftentimes called to different places and spaces, and I'll never complain about that, but the Bush Fellowship is asking, 'Do you have a track record of success, and do you need a break?'"

Part of the reason why Frederick is in such need of this rest is the fact

that the type of work and support he serves is traumatic, he called it secondary trauma. Especially in the youth who connect with him and share devasting stories of their everyday lives. One day he will be talking with people in triage who are struggling with fentanyl addictions, and the next he will be having lunch with the mayor at BernBaum's. Frederick lives a very dual life.

Along with rest, Frederick explained in his Fellowship plans that he was going to also be returning to school. Having his bachelor's and master's degrees, Frederick will be working towards getting his doctoral degree. The Fellowship selection committee chose up to 24 applicants to join the fellowship, and in June of this year, the official 2024 Bush Fellows were announced and Frederick was named 1 of 24.

"It's really unique and cool to see this evolution over time to where I went from a very amateur speaker—Eric Hatch was my voice coach—to me now being in his leadership classes, or training kids with leadership, and now they're the ones performing at MLK. Now, they're the ones who are planning events," Frederick said. "This idea of passing the baton, that's starting to happen. And I think that's where I am now. In 2024, I'm not taking as many speaking gigs, or as many poetry performances, I'll give it to my students."

With his induction into the Bush Fellowship, Frederick's opportunity to take a step back from the dayto-day operations of his nonprofit work and further his education

began to become a reality. It's not always easy to "pass the torch" per se, especially when it comes to a project one is deeply connected with, so we asked Frederick if he was nervous about pulling back.

"Nervous is not the answer that I have. I am uncomfortably excited," he said. "I'm excited but very uncomfortable to be excited because I know that God works in mysterious ways and that whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I know that I have students in mind who can lead some of these events and programs that I'm doing. I know that we have 19 interns from MSUM coming next year to help out with Umoja. I know that our board is going to make sure that we get the support that

we need. So, I think they see this [Fellowship] as an investment into Umoja, see this as an investment not only to Umoja because I see Umoja as a part of North Dakota, but as an investment into North Dakota."

He pointed out that the last person who was awarded a fellowship from Fargo was many years ago, and that's exciting to see North Dakota being put on the map for, "wanting to make a change for belonging, for good energy, for healing."

"If somebody is like, 'Fred, I took your spot, you can't come back here and do the same stuff,' I'm gonna be so fucking happy. Me and J'Neil wrote in our business plan—we want somebody to work us out of this job. Our goal is not to have to keep on creating unity in schools, we want schools to automatically do it," he said.

Frederick says his TED talk he did back when he was 19 is what most people know him from. And while his 90,000 views on the official TEDx YouTube channel might suggest that's where people outside of the community know him from, we'd argue that the FM community knows Frederick Edwards Jr. for his unwavering dedication to making the community an informed, empowered place.

ERIC MILLER

Q: Can you please tell us about your company?

A: Our focus is home maintenance and care. A customer would schedule their home assessment, then a Dwel home pro would come out to the property and complete the assessment. From there, we create a customized home care plan and schedule a minimum of two visits per year. During these visits, a Dwel home pro will complete tasks on the home care plan. These tasks can include things like changing furnace filters, cleaning gutter, and other general handyman tasks. A homeowner will also have the ability to add tasks to each visit.

Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?

A: We are trying to help busy professionals with the upkeep of their homes by completing the routine maintenance needed.

"A

s the founder of Dwel and owner of Dwella Inspections, my mission is to streamline home maintenance and empower customers with confidence in their home investments. Our team at Dwella Inspections offers unparalleled expertise in all aspects of home construction, ensuring each inspection delivers safety and security to homeowners. I leverage my extensive background in residential construction and mortgage banking to enhance the home-buying experience. At Dwel, we're innovating the way homeowners manage maintenance, driven by a passion for excellence in customer service and entrepreneurship."

Q: How did your company come to be?

A: I'm a home inspector by trade and continued to notice the same recurring maintenance not getting done.

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: Multiple reasons, mainly I wanted to surround myself with other small business owners who are in a similar stage of start-up.

Q: What has your experience been like with the cohort so far?

A: The cohort has been great. I think what makes it unique is that the residents are very diverse in what we do, which gives us a lot of other perspectives from outside our industry.

Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?

A: My goal is to grow Dwel to expand it throughout the upper midwest in the next five years.

Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?

A: Originally we were focused on the consumer tech side of the business. As we received feedback we learned quickly that we needed to pivot our focus to the consumer service side. From there we can learn what tech we need to build.

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: The incorporation of technology is really the most interesting trend in the construction and home service industry. It is going to help create significant efficiencies in the overall communication during the process.

Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?

A: As a solopreneur I get to wear all of the hats of the business. For me, the biggest measure is getting my daily priority list completed every day. Those

small wins continue to stack up.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: Learning all of the different aspects of a business and understanding what I need help with.

Q: What advice would you give to other business owners out there?

A: Sometimes you need to just keep it simple and start with paper and pencil. Once you determine your idea makes sense, invest in creating amazing processes and implementing technology.

OWNER, RODEMERICA

ERICK RODER

Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?

A: I just think there are a lot of places in America that everyone should see at some point in their life. I want to help others experience nature.

Q: How did your company come to be?

A: I was working remote from my home office in North Dakota in a blizzard in January. I thought to myself, this would be more enjoyable in pretty much anywhere else in the world. That was the beginning of the mobile office idea.

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: I haven't ran a business before. I knew there was so much more to owning a business than just being good at your craft, or selling your product. I wanted to be in an environment to learn with others more about what it takes to actually run a business.

Erick Roder is a lifelong adventurer who wants to help others explore our amazing world.

"We built a camper van with two beds, two workstations, and Starlink Wi-Fi. It was designed specifically for people who to can work remotely to comfortably adventure while they work."

Q: What has your experience been like with the cohort so far?

A: It has been life changing for the better. I didn't understand how lonely running a business would be. To be able to have others understand the challenges of running a small business, and being able to help navigate those challenges has been so valuable.

Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?

A: I want to make my current van into a working profitable proof of concept. Then hopefully expand to have more and eventually have a fleet.

Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?

A: I found out when starting a business, there is a major challenge that presents itself basically every quarter. I would not have made it this far without my network and their guidance.

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: The amount of businesses that allowed remote work skyrocketed after 2020, now some of those businesses are shifting back to more in office. Hybrid work to promote work life balance is more tolerated though, so hopefully that stays true.

Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?

A: When two people come back from a trip with a lifelong memory, were able to relax, get back to nature, and take the break they need; that is a win for me.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: The pictures people take during their few days in my van become a forever memory. Seeing/helping people enjoy nature has been my favorite part.

Q: Is there any technology or innovation that you believe will significantly impact your industry in the next few years?

A: Self-driving vehicles would be an amazing next step. I think it would be awesome to start watching a season of Yellowstone on a Friday, and then be in actual Yellowstone on Saturday.

Q: What advice would you give to other business owners out there?

A: Leverage your network, talk to other people that have started a business for advice. rodemerica.com

HANNAH

Q: Can you please tell us about yourself?

A: "My unique journey began with a childhood shaped by global experiences in Zaire, Africa, and Quebec, Canada, within a family deeply immersed in entrepreneurship. Witnessing my father build ventures from the ground up ignited a lifelong passion for helping businesses thrive, spanning industries like real estate, mortgages, automotive sales, retail shops, cafes, and service-based businesses. Years spent honing my skills in operations, leadership, and strategic planning at a Ford dealership deepened my understanding of what makes businesses soar—and sometimes struggle. This invaluable experience propelled me into the role of COO at BCrew Enterprises, where I spearheaded multiple successful ventures. In 2023, I launched 654 Business Strategies to address common business challenges such as operational inefficiencies, leadership gaps, and the disconnect between vision and reality. At 654, we craft personalized roadmaps to success, helping businesses of all sizes—from startups to established players—streamline operations, build high-performing teams, and achieve measurable results. My passion goes beyond numbers; I am your success architect, fueled by a genuine desire to elevate and inspire. Through my podcast, "The Flourish Mindset," I connect with entrepreneurs, exploring their journeys and learning about their triumphs and challenges on the path to growth. These conversations inform my approach and fuel my mission to empower others."

BETTENHAUSEN 654 BUSINESS STRATEGIES

Q: Can you please tell us about your company?

A: My vision is to build a world where businesses thrive, led by extraordinary people, fostering a culture of mentorship, accountability, and mutual respect. At 654 Business Strategies, we don't offer a one-size-fits-all approach. We take the time to understand your unique business, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and then craft a personalized roadmap to success. I help with streamlining operations, building high-performing leadership teams, bridging the gap between visions and execution, and breaking down the communication barrier between Visionaries and their teams, to create healthy and cohesive work environments.

Here's what sets me apart:

Extensive experience across various industries and company sizes – from startups to established players.

A proven track record of helping businesses achieve measurable results – increased revenue, improved profitability, and enhanced efficiency.

Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?

A: Building a world where businesses thrive, led by extraordinary people, fostering a culture of mentorship, accountability, and mutual respect.

Q: How did your company come to be?

A: 654 Business Strategies was born from a combination of my extensive experience in operations, leadership, and strategic planning, and a profound realization that I had a unique way of viewing goals and the steps required to achieve them. Throughout my career, including my time as COO at BCrew Enterprises and in various roles such as at a Ford dealership, I observed a recurring pattern of pain and chaos within organizations. This was often due to a lack of effective communication and understanding between visionaries and their teams.

I noticed that visionaries often chase ever-changing goals, which can create confusion and instability for the rest of the team. Conversely, teams need clear, grounded, and stable targets to work towards effectively. This communication gap frequently leads to a breakdown in trust and efficiency within the organization.

In 2023, I launched 654 Business Strategies with the mission to bridge this gap. My goal is to help businesses realize their objectives by providing tailored strategies that align visionary ideas with practical implementation. By breaking down communication barriers and ensuring that objectives are clearly communicated and understood. We aim to create an environment where both visionaries and their teams can thrive.

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: I love that I can surround myself with passionate and intelligent individuals

who are also striving to build their businesses. Supporting each other in our journey and learning from each other and their expertise.

Q: What has your experience been like with the cohort so far?

A: It has been an amazing group of support and ideas. The knowledge I have gained so far as well as the relationships I have built are lifechanging.

Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?

A: In the next five years, 654 Business Strategies plans to build a strong team of experienced C-Suite professionals offering training, coaching, mentorship, and on-demand services across all business functions. I am excited to create national groups of small business owners and leaders who want to take their skills and businesses to the next level. We'll also be speaking around the country, with a focus on improving relationships and communication between visionaries and integrators, as well as using personality assessments to motivate teams.

Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?

A: One significant challenge I faced was entering the B2B market with a service that, while essential, isn't always immediately recognized as a priority when companies are

DAKOTA BUSINESS LENDING

ENTREPRENEUR DISTRICT

HANNAH BETTENHAUSEN

tightening budgets nationally. To overcome this, I focused on helping businesses identify their underlying needs and demonstrating how our services could address their current challenges effectively. This approach proved successful with several clients who recognized the value I could bring. For others, I adapted by aligning our offerings more closely with their immediate needs and budget priorities through focused conversations on maximizing their resources.

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: I'm particularly excited about the growing trend toward personalized leadership development and the integration of personality assessments into team dynamics. This trend not only enhances organizational effectiveness but also aligns perfectly with our approach to empowering leaders and teams through tailored coaching and mentorship. On the other hand, I'm mindful of the challenges posed by fluctuating economic conditions and how they impact client budgets. Adapting our services to meet evolving

client needs while maintaining value will be crucial in navigating this concern.

Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?

A: My idea of success within my company and congruently in my role at this time is to make a substantial and lasting positive impact on each business and life I work with. I want to make sure that 654 Business Strategies is building a world where small businesses can thrive.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: The moment a company lets me know that they feel confident to carry on without me. Although bitter-sweet, I aim to create strong enough processes and empowered leaders in my wake that a business does not need to keep me on.

Q: Is there any technology or innovation that you believe will significantly impact your industry in the next few years?

A: I believe that advancements in AIdriven tools will significantly impact our industry in the coming years. This technology has the potential to revolutionize how we deliver training, coaching, and mentorship services by offering more personalized and data-driven insights into leadership development and team dynamics. Harnessing these innovations will enhance the effectiveness of our services as well as enable us to provide more tailored solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients.

Q: What advice would you give to other business owners out there?

A: Ensure you have a strong support system that provides mentorship, insights, knowledge, and encouragement whenever you need it. The people you surround yourself with will profoundly influence your life as well as your business's success.

OWNER, MENTAL FITNESS GUY

GLEN STEVENS

Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?

A: I believe in business leaders. As a speaker, trainer, and coach, I strive to help leaders achieve their goals in half the time with increased joy and wellbeing. The why behind that is when business leaders win, they are in a position to make our world a better place for everyone.

Q: How did your company come to be?

A: That's quite a story! The short answer is I believe God told me to do this. If someone wants the longer story they should take me out for coffee!

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: There are three key reasons: 1) the office spot is in a great location; 2) the community of entrepreneurs it creates; and 3) the increased awareness it allows me in our community.

Q: What has your experience been like with the cohort so far?

A: It has been great! The reasons I joined have all been met. I also

m a lover! I love my wife of 36 years and four adult children. I love learning. I love good local food and coffee. I love sports, especially football. I love traveling. And at the core of who I am, I love Jesus. People are also very interested to know I was a pastor for 23 years before starting my new career in coaching for business leaders. We are in the middle of a mental health crisis and the C-suite, entrepreneurs, and small business owners aren't exempt. Mental Fitness Guy helps these leaders train their brains to eliminate the negative thoughts and emotions that sabotage their success and happiness. We do this through inspiring keynotes, interactive training workshops, and one-on-one coaching."

have benefited from using the beautiful conference room at Dakota Business Lending to host a quarterly strategic planning session for other entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?

A: My five-year plan is to empower 10,000 c-suite leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs by training them to eliminate the negative thoughts and emotions that sabotage their success and happiness. This positions them to use their influence to make our world a better place for themselves, their families, their employees, their customers, and their causes.

Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?

A: The transition from pastor to business coach created a huge credibility challenge. I overcame it by getting coaching certifications with Business Made Simple (2020) and Positive Intelligence (2022), taking advantage of many

resources for entrepreneurs in Fargo, and building my own mental fitness to face the challenges with resilience and a growth mindset.

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: I'm very excited about Mental Fitness coaching because it practically helps business leaders address the mental health crisis so many people are facing today. The simple Mental Fitness Operating System that I help them install for themselves and others on their team provides a real return on investment in performance, wellness, and improved team dynamics.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: Meeting and serving incredible people who want to be great at what they do as business leaders.

OWNER, THE EDUCATORS' LAB

DARCY BAKKEGARD

Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?

A: "At the risk of sounding dramatic: We want to revolutionize education by empowering teachers as catalysts for change. We help teachers identify challenges and frustrations and then empower them to design their own solutions to those challenges. Rather than waiting for top-down, one-sizefits-few approaches to problems, we train teachers in design thinking and help them implement place-based solutions.

The world is changing quickly, there are big problems to solve, and we need big changes in education to grow the problem-solvers of the future. Teachers are vital to this mission and to helping solve the problems facing humanity.

Q: How did your company come to be?

A: Michelle and Darcy met while working on the PBS Teacher Ambassador Program, designing and facilitating professional learning experiences to help rural educators have access to high-quality learning opportunities. They immediately bonded over a common desire to do MORE. More to empower educators to enact their own ideas; more to infuse relevant content into schools; and more to support teachers as leaders and changemakers.

The Educators’ Lab is our space to play, create, and inspire change.

Darcy Ballegard is a change consultant and co-founder of The Educators' Lab. After teaching English and theatre for 12+ years, Bakkegard now creates the type of professional development she always wanted—something that helps her improve her classroom without wasting time.

"Talking about education, brainstorming how to make it better, and helping teachers drive change are my passions, hobbies, and loves," Bakkegard said. "I have a Master’s in Secondary Education, am an ISTE Certified Educator, an experienced international presenter, and a believer in the power of education.

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: Short answer: Cause I had no idea how to start or run a business and wasn't sure I could do it.

Long Answer: In December of 2019 I gave birth to tiny triplets. Suddenly, I was a stay-at-home mom (who never anticipated making that shift). While I still taught a few continuing education classes for teachers and finished writing a book (The Startup Teacher Playbook), taking care of the triplets was my main focus.

Fast forward to December of 2022. My trio turned three and were poised to start preschool in January. While that had been the plan all along and gave me an opportunity to do more of the work I love, it also meant I was suddenly "unemployed." While scrolling through Facebook, I saw a post from Michaela Schell about the Entrepreneur District. I went, "Man, that's cool. She always does such amazing things." And scrolled on.

Then I stopped. Went back and posted a comment: "What about stay-at-home moms starting a consulting business?" Michaela urged me to apply. I did. And am so gery grateful.

Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?

A: Lead Teacher Empowerment Incubators in five states and help educators design solutions to challenges they face and then fund

When Bakkegard isn't teaching, she directs plays with her most recent plays being at West Fargo High School and Teatre B. Bakkegard grew up in Valley City and after stints in London, St. Paul, rural Wisconsin, and Istanbul she now lives in Fargo with her husband Jeff, and 4.5 year old triplets, Kurt, Ben, and Cora.

"We believe the best way to invest in our students is to invest in our teachers," Bakkegard said. "There is no change in education without investing in the expertise of educators. For every opportunity, solution, innovation, or idea, a teacher is at the heart of its implementation. We believe it's critical to design spaces and experiences that support teachers to do what they do best: make a difference for young people."

their innovations to improve teaching and learning.

Host an annual JOY LAB for 500+ educators to help educators rekindle the joy of learning and teaching!

Keynote for local and national conferences about the problem-solving power of being an Ambassador of Joy (doing my first such keynote for the Presentation Prayer Conference at the Sanctuary Event Center on October 10, 2024).

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: Excited: The general shift toward personalized learning/learner-centered education for students. It's the right move to increase authenticity and relevance while building durable, flexible skills. It also provides a framework to show why the work I do— personalized learning for educators is so vital.

Concerned: The growing disillusion with public education and distrust of educators/education.

Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?

A: Number of teachers served and the joy of educators as they leave a workshop experience.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: Balancing the love of my brain (teaching, innovating, brainstorming) with the love of my heart (my husband/ family).

Q: Is there any technology or innovation that you believe will significantly impact your industry in the next few years?

A: AI. All the talk about AI tutors replacing teachers highlights the need for relevant, authentic learning experiences and emphasizes the critical human role educators serve. If school doesn't continue to evolve; if the focus is just on facts and standardized tests, then AI will replace educators. But society will crumble. Because that's not what education is really about. It's about connection and problemsolving; it's about mental health and giving every child a place to belong and thrive so they can then belong and thrive in society.

Q: What advice would you give to other business owners out there?

A: Dedicate time. Tap into the resources around you for help—I'm thinking childcare specifically. You cannot do it all. Focus on a few things and do them well. theeducatorslab.com

A: I was laid off at my job and decided to give a run at my own business. 14 years later, I have been blessed to continue doing so.

Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?

A: So I could step away from my home from time to time to have a workspace of my own.

I hope to continue to hold the flexibility I do now and continue to find those long-term clients that keep me going.

Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?

A: Probably figuring out the best way to estimate clients and what to charge. Times have obviously changed so much in the last decade, so keeping up with that, what my work is worth and what time it will take me to do it.

Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?

A: AI is always a concern hovering over my head, but is also a helpful tool. Just in hopes that clients will continue to want that human creativity behind their marketing materials—with some help from AI.

Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?

A: The ability to continue to run my business and have all the time for my family.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?

A: There will be lots of ebbs and flows. I have learned even when the roller coaster is going down, and I may lose hope, it has always made its way back up! Just be prepared on how you handle each side of it. Patience, dedication, and hard work.

Magnum Electric Starts Groundbreaking In-House Electrical Academy

lot has changed over the last 10+ years in technology, culture, and the trade industry, yet most of the educational system has remained unchanged. According to NPR reports, the application rate for electricians dropped by 49% between 2020 and 2022. With America’s labor shortage of electricians, there is an undeniable need to innovate and modernize the educational system to inspire upcoming generations to learn the trade. Magnum Electric decided to face this challenge head-on by creating an in-house educational program called the “PowerHouse”.

Launching fall of 2024, the PowerHouse is the first electrical trade school of its kind to offer daytime programs instead of night classes. Students are also paid to attend and tuition expenses are covered by Magnum Electric. With different schedule options to choose from, students will meet once a week totaling an average of 16 classroom hours a month. “Having our own training system allows us to be more adaptive, provide a personal learning experience, as well as gives us the ability to prioritize the practical side of electrical education,” stated Christian Opp, Instructor of the PowerHouse.

Located in West Fargo, the PowerHouse programs will take place in the building adjacent to Magnum Electric. Class sizes cap at 20 students. With an already full class roster for the 2024 academic year, 20% of the PowerHouse’s registered applicants are women! To put that in perspective, only 2% of all electricians in the United States are women. Another unique feature of the PowerHouse is a new “Pre-Apprenticeship Program”, a two-week training that focuses on basic skills for new apprentices to get ready for a job site. Topics include industry orientation, materials, tools, basic working NEC knowledge, and hands-on lab experience.

About Magnum Electric

What started in 1989 as a humble electrical company in Moorhead, MN has now grown to over 300 personnel with their main office in West Fargo, and travel crews across the United States. Currently licensed in 28 states, specializing in new construction, commercial, industrial, residential multi-family, and hospitality projects. With an emphasis on employee development, they are dedicated to advancing the careers of employees through continued education and diverse project opportunities.

Since the 2024 class registration is full, students can be added to a waitlist or apply for the 2025 school year. High school graduates can start their education and work at PowerHouse as soon as they complete secondary school. Magnum Electric’s PowerHouse Apprenticeship Program is approved as a related training program by the North Dakota State Electrical Board. For further questions regarding the PowerHouse, contact Instructor Christian Opp at christianopp@ magnumelectric.net or 701-551-3240.

Josiah Kopp

This month, we're excited to introduce Ryan Such , the founder of All Terrain Landscaping , Fargo's premier full-service lawn care provider. Ryan, a dedicated family man and enthusiastic outdoorsman, spent 20 years channeling himself into every aspect of his work, from comprehensive grounds maintenance to innovative landscaping solutions. His professional background, which began with a stint in law enforcement, pivoted early on in his career to boost him into the successful entrepreneur he is now. Under his leadership, All Terrain grew to become the largest and most certified lawn care enterprise in the region, offering a wide array of services tailored to enhance the beauty and utility of outdoor spaces across Fargo, Moorhead, and beyond.

DJ: Ryan, share what you feel comfortable sharing of your story because I think it really intrigues everyone, not just the small business community, but it's just an awesome story that I don't think a lot of people know about. So, you were a police officer in Fargo?

R: Correct, I was a police officer for two years, from 2001 to 2003.

D: How old were you then?

R: 27 to 29.

D: So, at 29 years old, you go from being a police officer to starting your own lawn care business.

R: Well, I started a lawn care company when I was like 18 years old.

D: You still had that going while you were a police officer?

R: I couldn't have a real job because I played sports, I played baseball, so I was doing lawn care—about 20 lawns a week.

D: Just very part-time?

R: Yeah, just the 'kid down the street with the push mower,' and lawn care stuff. I got a degree to be a police officer and got a job in Fargo as an officer. I started mowing more lawns and then got married, and had two kids. Then my daughter, Ellie, looked at me one day and said, 'Dad, I never see you.' And it broke my heart. I said I have to decide, I'm going to do just one of these two. So, I gave [serving as a police officer] up and started mowing lawns and went into that full-time.

DJ: What did everyone think? You went from this prestigious police officer to, you know, mowing lawns, which some people might not look at with the same level of respect, so how did that go with family?

R: My family was very excited. I guess with my extended family, I don't know that they were super excited.

D: What about in-laws, like you have young kids and you're going to take care of them by mowing lawns?

R: I don't remember that I asked a lot of [family], but I asked my wife.

D: What was she doing?

R: She was a teacher at Fargo South High School. Her ultimate goal was to

Geneva Nodland

be a stay-at-home mom, and I told her that the path for her to do that was for me to be a lawn care guy.

D: Then what?

R: I had needed somebody to do the lawn care stuff for me when I was gone being a police officer because [the business] kept growing. It wasn't that hard of a decision because it got to the point where I was paying them more than what I was making as a police officer.

DJ: At the time, were you doing personal or commercial [lawns]?

R: Both.

D: How were you getting your accounts? By referral or by doing a good job?

R: In our 25 years, I say, we never spent a dollar on advertising.

DJ: In 19 years, full-time, you built [All Terrain] up, how has that identify shift been?

R: I don't know what the identity struggle is, I'm in the midst of it trying to figure it out. So life is different, life is weird for me right now. There

were two companies All Terrain and the Out Front Power Equipment. So we sold and serviced commercial lawnmowers.

D: How did you get into that?

R: Well, the kind of lawn mower that we wanted to use, three or four other companies in town went bankrupt trying to sell them. So then, we started selling them.

D: So, now you're selling lawnmowers to your competitors, this is where this gets so interesting to me.

R: 'A rising tide raises all ships' was our philosophy. So our competitors, (if you would say it that way) a lot of them who became dear friends over the years, would buy more from us when we did service for them. Our company would also do weed control and fertilizer, I think for 17 different companies in town, but what we would do in return is there are a lot of services that we would fill up on and we would refer them to those companies. So, for example, there are three or four or five landscaping companies in town that buy mowers from us, and we would refer our landscaping, sprinkler installs, artificial turf, spring cleanups, or snow removal

to them in certain parts of town. So, we were constantly referring to our competitors because we believe that a rising tide raises all ships, trying to make everybody be able to put everybody's kids through college instead of being at everybody's throats. Not everybody subscribes to that philosophy, but I'd say the majority of the big players in Fargo did or do.

Brady: What made you think that you could make that arm of the business work though when three or four other dealerships went under selling those products?

R: Maybe I just do crazy leaps, like when the lawn care company had 20 or 30 accounts, and I was also working for another lawn care company that had 20 or 30 accounts. I ended up buying [the mowers] in a summer that he lost $80,000. I don't know if my wife was happy with me on that, but we turned it into something profitable. And that's the only thing we've ever bought. That was only 23 accounts to get the basics going. We believe in the product, and we believe we can sell it.

B: Just so I'm hearing you, right—so you bought that one business and then started on your own. And then separately, you also started selling the mowers and servicing company called

Out Front Power Equipment. And I did hear you correctly, though, that there were other dealerships that went under trying to sell those products. So, why would you guys ever start selling, how'd you get that to work, where it wasn't really working in the market before?

R: I think I think the fact that we use the machines and we quickly became kind of the biggest lawn care company in town. I think a lot of people looked at us and said, 'Hey, what do you use?' Buying a $20,000 lawn mower wasn't on people's radar, but when you see the product that it does, and the efficiency of it, then other people started using it.

B: And then at the same time, you're fostering those good relationships with those other people by giving them referrals and stuff like that, it makes sense.

DJ: You just said that you became the biggest lawn care company in the region. What do you think the key to that success was?

R: I'm sure Jobs or somebody really smart like that said that you have to be first or the best, you got to be bold or something like that. So, I think we were the first all-inclusive. We did snow removal and lawn care. We started all of that back when I left the [police] department in '03, and then the decision was made that we need to be all-inclusive. We're not going to just mow, we're going to do snow, lawn, sprinklers, have arborists, master gardeners, trimming—just just kind of the full circle so that people could just hire one company, residential or commercial, they could just hire one company for all their stuff. I think we had that idea, and we invested in that idea before

anybody else did. So we got to lead that way.

D: You brought up the way you invested. How did you know when to invest in what? How did you know when to borrow money? How did you know when to try a new service? How did you know when it was the right time to do that?

R: Well, one, we wouldn't borrow money. I am a tightwad, so we would save the money and then buy the equipment. We would always buy a mower before we needed it, so it was one ahead. There are two philosophies on that. You can wait until you have enough at cost to buy the mower, but my philosophy on that is then you're making a whole bunch of people mad because you're behind that whole time—or you can buy more before you need it. You can grow into it and you can be ready to do people's accounts the next day instead of having them wait, so we always bought them all before we needed it.

D: Did anyone else around here do that? Were you the first one to do that?

R: I think we were a little better at the philosophy. I think that a lot of companies have done a really good job in the last 10 years doing that. I think there's a lot of good companies in the industry, and they've really stepped up their game, especially as of late.

DJ: If you could give someone advice today—they're going to start a business— what's the number one advice you would give them?

R: My advice would be, don't make your goal to be the biggest, make your goal to be the best. Because then you'll probably become the biggest, there's a

difference. There's a huge difference. If you want to be the best, you focus on being the best, you want to be the biggest you focus on being the biggest, and they're different. We always had a motto of better, not bigger, so we were constantly trying to figure out ways to get better. And by getting better, people tell their friends and you ultimately end up getting bigger, but the goal is not to get bigger.

DJ: What was one thing you did, that you feel like changed your business or took it to the next level?

R: I would say I'm a huge fan of RV—real value—and there's a lot to unlock there but it's, just be real—the opposite of gossip. And we have a philosophy in our team where anybody can be real with anybody at any time about anything. So you can go into the boss's office and tell him what you think about someone, in a kind, honoring way, but that type of culture is there for everybody to be able to do that.

D: Who really helped your culture? You kept the right people around, you paid them well, it sounds like you gave fantastic benefits, paid packages, and promised security in an industry that doesn't promise security to your employees. Is there anything else you did that stands out or anything you feel is different that you did to help grow your business or keep it as strong as it did over those years?

R: I think we had a consistent, no drama, no shortcut culture.

D: You held that accountability, did you have any help in that? Or any structure? People to help you with that?

R: The 'be real' value internally helps hold that accountable. Matt bought the company and did a fantastic job. Outside-wise, we hired Sagency and

they did a fantastic job of helping us articulate who we are and what we do.

D: So let me get this straight. The lawncare/snow removal company, hired a consultant, a business consultant to help, to give you vision and clarity in operation, is that what the main goal was?

R: Yeah, I mean, it was it was one of our key decisions that we made over the years.

D: How far along were you in the business when you did that?

R: That was about 10 years ago. I went on a fishing trip with a bunch of our team and I came back, and Mike—a friend of mine with Sagency. I met with him and I told him I was embarrassed to be the owner of this company, [that] we could do so much better, have so much better of a team. [I said], 'I'm failing and I need you to help me figure this out.' So, Mike and Tom came in and said, 'If you want to do this the right way, you're probably going to lose half your leadership team.' And we did it, and the team that we have now, with 10, run [it]. We just made a huge investment in doing things, I would say, the right way. I think I had a lot of things to learn. I probably was trying to be people's friend instead of a boss, if you want to say. I had a lot of things to learn and our leadership team had a lot of things to learn.

Brady: When and why did you think about transitioning? What led to that?

R: Well, the plan all along has been to be done when I could be selfsufficient, and then to volunteer my time to the kingdom. So, that time came along, and it seemed very apparent for a lot of reasons. I had a person in-house who had been there for 10 years and who is an awesome leader. Basically, I guess, that is the short answer.

B: So one of your employees bought you out, but he's still running it very similar to how it's always been run?

R: He and his wife, and he has done a phenomenal job so far.

B: Can I clarify what is 'volunteer time for the Kingdom?' What does that mean?

R: So I volunteer at my church, volunteering with Valley Christian Counseling & Wellness, doing the mentor program. That's the main goal—to volunteer for faith-based things. Right now I'm involved with baseball, which I tell myself inside that God loves baseball.

DJ: What do you miss the most from when you were running All Terrain?

R: The team. I got asked in an interview about 10 years ago what was my favorite part of the job. [I said] The team. [They asked], 'What's the most challenging part of the job?' The team. There's there's such great wins and losses there, but the team. There are a couple of key relationships there that you just missed doing the daily battle with.

D: What are you most excited about in future?

R: Hunting? Can I say that? I mean, I'm excited to see what can happen with some of these organizations that my wife and I are involved with, that's the real true answer. But from a selfish standpoint, I'm excited about hunting and I'm excited about grandkids and I'm excited about waking up on a Tuesday morning and watching Ricki Lake reruns or Jerry Springer reruns, but just to be able to do that—I'm excited about that.

Yeah, it has happened and it's happening. We have gotten distribution into the Texas market. So, we've been getting into stores down there and then also in California. Soon, we'll be getting into the Pacific Northwest and possibly Colorado as well. But our distribution centers haven't been activated in those regions yet.

We do sauerkraut, radish, kimchi, spicy carrots, and then some other limited products. We actually have two production facilities. We have one in Fargo, ND, but then we have a slightly larger facility in Montana, where we're doing most of our distribution out of while we work to build out a full production facility here in Fargo. We are, as a company, making about 4,000 jars a month.

We've definitely grown a lot over the last year. Part of that is due to investment. We were part of the gener8tor accelerator program, and they invested into our company and money definitely makes things easier. On that front, It's allowed us to go to a lot of trade shows where we meet with buyers for the stores and the target markets that we're aiming for. It allows us to develop relationships.

Recently, we became an approved brand for Natural Grocers. That allowed us to solidify a bigger distributor... that was really big for us.

It's really been many factors coming together—having the right financing and then strategic partners with a brokerage account to help us with this expansion and being a Natural Grocers approved brand is huge.

seven years later.

We'll be launching a new flavor of sauerkraut pretty soon

Another piece of advice I have for young entrepreneurs, especially female entrepreneurs, is so many people are going to try and tell you what you should do, and some of that advice could be great and should be welcomed, but some shouldn't.

I was going to go into marketing. I didn't really have a clear idea of what I wanted to do.

What I've learned is that I know our product best and I know our business best. And while it's so important for us to be open to learning new things, if something doesn't feel right to me, I don't need to do it.

a hot sauce or salsa replacement. And I love cheese. I use the kimchi in the middle of my grilled cheese sandwiches. I try to eat some every day.

One of the things I would say is, especially if you're in college and you're working on small projects, think about it in a bigger picture. Think about it actually becoming a business. Don't limit yourself to just the classroom. That's literally how I have my career.

I eat it with cheese, crackers, and tortilla chips, I just love it. The kimchi is my personal favorite. It's kind of spicy and I like to use it as

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your current role?

A: As the Video Content Lead at Steffes Group, I have the privilege of guiding a talented team of creatives. Since my start in March 2022, I've focused on fostering a collaborative environment where every member feels empowered to bring their expertise to the forefront. My role is to oversee our video projects, ensuring that each one aligns with our high standards and brand vision, while providing our editors and videographers with the support and direction they need to excel in their roles. It's about setting the stage for creativity and ensuring our team has the resources to capture the energy of auction days and translate it into compelling stories that resonate with our audience. I also curate our collection of images that are integral to the visual storytelling of Steffes Group, making sure our website and promotional materials reflect the professionalism and dynamism of our brand. Keeping our YouTube channel updated with fresh content is another way I connect with our community, showcasing the depth of what we do at Steffes Group.

Young Professional Highlight SARA HAND

Video Content Lead, Steffes Group, Inc.

Q: How did you become involved with YPN?

A: My journey with the Young Professionals Network (YPN) began in the summer of 2019, during my time at Cass County Electric Cooperative. The Cooperative was actively engaged with the Chamber, and their enthusiasm for YPN inspired me to become a member. With a natural inclination towards being social, I found myself a bit out of my element attending my first event—the summer picnic—without knowing anyone. To my surprise, the individuals I met there were incredibly welcoming, instantly making me feel at home. This warm reception was the turning point for me; I dove in headfirst, joined various committees, and have been deeply involved ever since, contributing to the vibrant YPN community.

Q: What motivated you to choose your current career path?

A: Capturing life's moments through a lens has always been more than a hobby—it's my passion. Initially, I believed that storytelling and video production would confine me to the news industry. However, after high school, I discovered the vast landscape of opportunities available. A mentor opened my eyes to the art

of filming weddings, igniting a spark within me and revealing the power of visual narratives.

This mentorship was a turning point, leading me to realize that my skills could extend beyond traditional news. I learned to craft stories for businesses, to create engaging content that resonates emotionally with audiences and enhances brand connection.

Now, with Steffes Group, my role allows me to immerse myself in the array of stories within the agricultural and construction sectors. It's about asking the right questions, uncovering the personal narratives that are at the heart of the industry. Every day presents a new chapter to narrate, a new opportunity to translate the vibrancy of these worlds into visual experiences that captivate and inform.

Q: Can you share a significant challenge you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame it?

A: A significant challenge I faced was managing a video project with shifting expectations due to a sales representative's uncertainty about what they wanted. The deadlines were tight, and the constant changes made them seem increasingly

unrealistic. Recognizing the need for intervention, I proactively sought clarity by consulting directly with the COO. Together, we established a more structured approach for future projects, implementing a protocol to set clear expectations and a definitive vision for each video before beginning production. This strategy not only salvaged the project at hand but also paved the way for more efficient and successful collaborations in the future.

Q: How do you stay updated and continue to grow professionally in your field?

A: Staying current in the dynamic field of video content creation is a constant challenge. The landscape is continuously evolving, with software updates and advancements in technology offering new tools and techniques to master. To remain at the forefront, I've made professional development a scheduled priority. Regularly, I carve out time to explore the latest research, learn from industry leaders, and engage with new software tutorials—often through informative YouTube videos. This includes embracing advancements such as AI in video editing, which significantly streamlines our editing process for faster delivery without compromising quality. My commitment to learning and adapting to these innovative tools ensures that I'm not just keeping pace with industry changes, but I'm also able to bring the most innovative solutions to my work at Steffes Group.

Q: What has been your most rewarding experience with YPN so far?

A: While I've cherished building genuine connections within YPN, the most rewarding moment came during a challenging personal journey this year. My husband and I were grappling with infertility, undertaking another IVF cycle. It was a dear friend from church who thoughtfully nominated us for a Lend A Hand Up fundraiser. When

I relayed this to the YPN Leadership Committee, they responded with a heartwarming gesture—a collective donation of over $1,000, which Lend A Hand Up generously increased by an additional 20%. This overwhelming show of support left me at a loss for words. It's experiences like these that underscore what YPN means to me: more than a network, it's a community that has become like family, standing with you through every high and low.

Q: How has being a part of YPN impacted your professional network?

A: My journey with YPN has been transformative, opening doors I might not have otherwise imagined. Being nominated as YPN's "One to Watch" was not just an honor but also a pivotal moment professionally. It showcased my work to potential employers and underscored the value I could bring to their teams, which led to my current role at Steffes Group.

Through YPN, I've honed a stronger leadership identity, learning to navigate and guide diverse groups with confidence. Serving as the social committee chair, I engaged with professionals from a variety of backgrounds and skill sets, enhancing my ability to conduct meetings with assurance, even when I wasn't the most knowledgeable on every topic.

Q: Can you share a memorable connection or opportunity that arose through YPN?

A: In my introductions to new members at YPN, I often find myself sharing the experience of meeting Kiah, a fellow member and realtor, during my first year with the network. We quickly struck up a friendship, and when it came time for my husband and me to purchase our first home, it was clear who we would turn to. Kiah was instrumental in the process; the trust and rapport we had nurtured through our YPN interactions were invaluable. She guided us through

every step with such care and dedication that it reinforced the power of the connections made through YPN—connections that extend beyond professional networking and into the meaningful milestones of our lives.

Q: Where do you see yourself professionally in the next five years?

A: As I look to the next five years, my professional path might not be defined by traditional upward mobility, but rather by deepening my expertise in video content creation and discovering innovative ways to communicate our brand's story. While Steffes is growing rapidly, my immediate aim is to focus on my own growth within the realm of video production.

I am keen on embracing new technologies, especially those involving AI, to craft compelling narratives for our auctions and company profiles. My commitment is to evolve with the industry's changes, bringing fresh, creative marketing strategies to the table. By enhancing my skills, I aim to contribute significantly to the impact and success of Steffes Group's projects, regardless of my official title or role.

Q: Any final thoughts or messages you’d like to share with the community?

A: Whatever task lies before you, tackle it with such passion and attention to detail that you want to #PutYourNameOnIt, and you're proud to say, 'I did that.' This mantra, which my dad and uncle instilled in me, serves as a powerful reminder to own every project I take on. It's not just about completing a task—it's about infusing your work with integrity and excellence. If you're not striving to do something you can proudly attach your name to, it loses its purpose.

BUILDING BRIDGES:

The Benefits of Collaborative Divorce in North Dakota

ivorce is often perceived as a battle, filled with acrimony and contentious legal proceedings. However, there is a growing movement toward a more amicable and constructive approach: collaborative law. This method offers numerous benefits for all divorcing spouses; particularly for families with children. When parents can divorce with dignity and maintain a cooperative relationship, it creates a healthier environment for all involved, especially the children. Collaborative divorce not only addresses unresolved issues from the marriage but also prevents the transfer of trauma to the next generation. The conclusion of a divorce through the courts does not signify the end of the journey, as

the events during and after the divorce have lasting impacts on real lives and families. As an attorney committed to fostering positive post-divorce relationships, becoming trained in collaborative law was crucial for me. In my view, the “pitbull lawyer” approach is not the best in family law. Why? After the attorneys are no longer involved, the ex-spouses will need to co-parent until their children reach adulthood. If the attorneys' actions during the divorce only fueled animosity, effective co-parenting becomes nearly impossible. For this reason, I recognize the long-term communication needs of families and strive to support them through this transformative process.

UNDERSTANDING COLLABORATIVE LAW

Collaborative law is a legal process that emphasizes cooperation over confrontation. It involves building a multidisciplinary team of neutral professionals, which includes attorneys, financial specialists, divorce coaches, family specialists, therapists, and more. The beauty of this process lies in the collaborative effort between the couple and their attorneys to assemble a team tailored to that specific family's needs. Not every situation will require every professional on the team, but it's reassuring to know that the option is available. When a collaborative law attorney is hired, they will look at the facts of the case and guide the parties as they select the roster for their team. The collaborative process is grounded in the principles of respect, transparency, and shared decisionmaking, aiming to minimize the emotional and financial toll of divorce.

Unlike traditional divorce litigation, which often pits spouses against each other in a courtroom setting, collaborative law encourages open communication and problem-solving. Both parties agree at the outset not to go to court and to work collaboratively toward a resolution. If either party

decides to pursue litigation, the collaborative process terminates, and both attorneys must withdraw from the case, requiring the couple to find new attorneys. This requirement ensures that everyone is committed to finding a peaceful solution.

THE ADVANTAGES OF COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE FOR FAMILIES

• Preserving Relationships: One of the most significant advantages of collaborative divorce is its focus on preserving relationships. When parents can maintain a respectful and cooperative relationship postdivorce, it benefits their children immensely. Collaborative law provides a framework for effective communication, helping parents to co-parent more effectively and reduce the emotional stress on their children.

• Minimizing Conflict: Traditional divorce proceedings can be adversarial, creating a hostile environment that can exacerbate

conflicts and negatively impact children. Collaborative law aims to minimize conflict by fostering a cooperative atmosphere where both parties work together to find solutions. This approach can lead to more amicable settlements and a smoother transition for the entire family.

• Addressing Unresolved Issues: Many marriages end because of unresolved issues that, if left unaddressed, can carry over into the post-divorce relationship. Collaborative law provides an opportunity to tackle these issues constructively. With the help of divorce coaches, mental health professionals, and other experts, couples can address underlying problems, learn new communication skills, and develop a healthier co-parenting dynamic.

• Preserving Assets: The contentious litigation process can raise emotions and ultimately prolong negotiations, leading to increased legal fees and court costs. A typical divorce that results in a trial could cost you upwards of $30,000. That is assuming you have an easy case. More emotionally charged cases can cost you upwards of $50,000. Collaborative law includes professionals who help parties manage their emotions constructively. This support can prevent emotional outbursts from

derailing negotiations, resulting in a more efficient and cost-effective process.

• Creating a Tailored Agreement:

In a collaborative divorce, the couple has more control over the outcome. The couple works together to create a settlement that is tailored to their unique needs and circumstances, rather than having a judge impose a onesize-fits-all solution. The flexibility of collaborative law allows for more creative and personalized arrangements, which can be particularly beneficial for families with children.

• Protecting Children's Well-Being:

The well-being of children is a top priority in collaborative divorce. The process encourages parents to focus on the best interests of their children and to work together to create a parenting plan that supports their development and stability. By minimizing conflict and fostering cooperation, collaborative law helps to shield children from the emotional turmoil often associated with divorce.

THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS: HOW IT WORKS

• Step #1 - Each spouse picks their collaborative law trained attorney

• Step #2 - Build a team roster of professionals

• Step #3 - Meet with the team of professionals and obtain the tools needed to build your bridge

• Step #4 - Transparent disclosure through discovery process

• Step #5 - Negotiate the divorce agreement (settlement stage)

• Step #6 - Obtain the final divorce decree

The collaborative process typically begins with each spouse selecting a collaboratively trained attorney. You can find a list of collaborative law trained attorneys like me at nddivorce.com. The couple and their attorneys then sign a participation agreement, committing to the collaborative process and agreeing not to go to court. This agreement sets the tone for a respectful and cooperative approach to resolving issues.

Next, the couple and their attorneys work together to build their team roster. Once the team roster is selected, the couple, their attorneys, and other professionals, such as financial advisors and mental health experts, participate in a series of meetings. These meetings are designed to facilitate open communication, identify the couple's needs and goals, and develop

solutions that work for both parties. For example, including a financial specialist on the team roster can be extremely advantageous, as their expertise goes beyond simply evaluating assets and debts.

These professionals offer in-depth knowledge in managing the financial aspects of divorce. For instance, they can assist in maximizing home equity, optimizing tax savings, budgeting for your child’s college fund, and making the most of Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) dollars. Their guidance helps ensure that financial decisions are made with a long-term perspective, reducing future disputes and financial strain.

Then comes the process known as ‘discovery.’ Here, the couple is encouraged to be transparent and share information openly. Instead of formal discovery procedures like subpoenas or depositions, parties voluntarily disclose relevant information and documents to each other. Information is exchanged informally and directly between the parties and their attorneys. This can include financial documents, statements, and any other relevant materials necessary for making informed decisions. This approach can lead to more satisfactory outcomes regarding parenting schedules and the preservation of family assets.

The next step is to negotiate the terms of the divorce agreement.

In a traditional litigated divorce, the parties typically do not interact directly. Communication occurs through their attorneys, and when negotiations happen in person, the parties rarely see one another as they are separated into different rooms. On the other hand, in the collaborative process, the parties and their attorneys negotiate the terms of the divorce in the same room, at the same table, in a team-like setting. Lawyers in collaborative law are trained to move beyond “positional” bargaining, which involves trading offers and often results in a “winner” and a “loser,” and instead, they use an “interest-based” negotiation method to create win-win solutions.

Finally, after reaching an agreement on the terms of the divorce, the parties will sign the divorce agreement, also referred to as a stipulation or marital termination agreement. Subsequently, the attorneys will submit the agreement and any required documents to the court for final approval. Generally, the court approves the agreement,

and upon approval, it becomes the final divorce decree. Once the divorce decree is entered, you will begin to move on with your life but must still adhere to the requirements outlined in the decree. For this reason, it is essential to negotiate the terms of the divorce decree carefully, as it will have a long-lasting impact on the couple’s life and that of their children.

IN CONCLUSION

Collaborative law offers a compassionate and constructive alternative to traditional divorce litigation. By focusing on cooperation, communication, and mutual respect, it provides a pathway for families to transition through divorce with dignity and grace. For families with children, collaborative divorce is particularly beneficial, as it fosters a cooperative co-parenting relationship and minimizes the emotional impact on children. By building bridges between divorcing parties, collaborative law ensures

that families emerge from the process with stronger, more positive foundations for the future. As a dedicated collaborative law attorney, I am committed to helping families navigate this challenging time with compassion and understanding, ensuring that they experience the full benefits of this transformative approach. AWESOME FOUNDATION GRANT AWARD WINNER

Native American Christian Ministry of Fargo Moorhead

he Native American Christian Ministry of Fargo Moorhead is set to host an afternoon of education, community and spiritual awakening for local Indigenous women at the Neighborhood Church located at 730 27th St N in Fargo. The event will be held in September, and registration is appreciated.

JT Shining Onesided, a respected Ojibwe leader, will guide participants through important ceremonies that honor and celebrate womanhood. The event will also include a hands-on ribbon skirt-making workshop and close with a communal meal of traditional Indigenous foods. The event is focused on traditional women’s ceremonies from the Ojibwe culture but is open to anyone interested in deepening connections with themselves and the world around them.

Reflect

“Women are the backbone of our community,” said Amanda Vivier, event organizer and Spiritual Director for the Way at the Native American Christian Ministry of Fargo Moorhead, “If we can strengthen and heal her, give her the courage to move forward, we can heal families, communities today and for the generations that come after.”

For Ojibwe, the important role women play is celebrated with special clothing and ceremonies that help them reconnect with their spiritual power. Once forcibly removed from these traditions and rituals, the Ojibwe and other indigenous peoples are now recovering their culture and spirituality.

“Native people are proudly recapturing these traditions by retelling and living into them in daily and periodic routines,” Vivier said.

To help educate and guide local Indigenous women through these empowering ceremonies, the organization has recruited JT Shining

Onesided. Onesided is an educator and spiritual leader in the Ojibwe community.

Onesided will lead participants in a Moon Ceremony, honoring the phases of Nookomis, Grandmother Moon, as well as a Berry Picking Ceremony, a coming-of-age tradition for young women. The day will be steeped in smudging, singing, and prayer to the Creator.

Reawaken

In addition to the large group celebration, a smaller breakout session will teach participants about the traditional Ojibwe ribbon skirt. This sacred garment has special significance for Ojibwe women as it strengthens their connection with Mother Earth and encourages mindfulness, compassion, and empathy.

“Our Ribbon Skirt ties us to the land, our Creator, our identity, and our place in Indigenous society,” Vivier said. “It is a symbol of resilience and perseverance, reflecting the survival and adaptation that native

people have endured and brought forward during a long season of colonization. The colors have specific spiritual significance, and reflect the identity of the woman wearing the skirt.”

Sewing machines and materials will be provided for participants to make their own Ribbon Skirts.

Reconnect

For more information on this event or to register, please reach out to the Native American Christian Ministry of Fargo Moorhead on Facebook or by emailing fmnacm2016@gmail.com.

WOMEN YOU SHOULD KNOW

EMPOWERED BY

Nicole Strafelda

OWNER, OLSON BLOOMS

Most Midwesterners know that farming in every season of our climate is a testament to our individual strength. Our Midwest plants are unique and require extra care to make sure they flourish and can withstand our harsh weather conditions. Something Nicole Strafelda, owner of Olson Blooms, a boutique-cut flower operation in Hawley, MN, knows all too well.

Strafelda is a fourth-generation farmer. She grew up farming row crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat, on land her great-grandfather first cultivated. And while she didn’t find her calling in traditional crops, Strafelda found she had deep roots in the family tradition in a different way.

A New Generation of Farming

Farming wasn’t Strafelda’s first calling. She got her degree in teaching from North Dakota State University and spent five years teaching fifth grade before a family health scare called her back to the family farm.

“The day I stopped teaching, I was really struggling,” Strafelda said. “Like any huge life change, I was worried whether or not I was making the right decision. One of my students gifted me a Barnes & Noble gift card, and after work that day I was wandering the aisles just going over everything in my head. I came across this book called the ‘Cut Flower Garden’ and started reading it. I haven’t always been a flower lover, but when I saw that book, I was like, ‘Flowers can look like that?’ That was the spark.”

Strafelda fell in love with the untamed beauty of fresh-cut flowers. For the next few years, she focused on working with her father and youngest sister on a transition plan for the family farm, but a desire to share the wonder and beauty of fresh-cut flowers with the world was slowly growing in the back of her mind. This seed would eventually become Olson Blooms.

Balancing the Change of Seasons

The transition from teaching fifth grade to owning a business while supporting a young family isn’t something you

can plan for. Strafelda quickly learned that plants, parenthood, and business ownership don’t always progress the way you want them to, and that is okay. Watching her first flowers, zinnias, snapdragons, and cosmos, flourish— despite the harsh climate—helped her accept her personal and professional challenges with grace and flexibility.

Strafelda explained, “There is just something about nature and my hands in the dirt... it has an amazing way of teaching us the ebbs and flow of life.”

Through failed crops, difficult weather, and more, Strafelda persevered to create a unique offering for her community. The beauty of her job at Olson Blooms is that she can spread kindness and interact with people. She finds joy and fulfillment in interacting with her customers as they open up and talk about how flowers impact them along with the events in their lives that bring them to her door.

”Through the act of giving flowers, everyone can have a piece of happiness in their homes,” she said.

Blooming Through Every Calling

Olson Blooms is a family-run business where even the kids are involved with seeding, delivering, and making decisions. And no day is ever the same in the Strafelda household; the family of four juggles family time, school, and business ownership by working together in and out of the field. Strafelda is able to juggle care for her two young daughters while caring for her flower crops and customers. Thankfully, children don’t get up quite as early as the flowers, she joked.

“Flowers allow me to capture a moment in time to find calm in the business of the world,” she said. “With a toddler in tow and a teaching background, I have tried to look at life through the eyes of a child—finding beauty in the everyday mundane life. My kids have a lot they can learn by helping me with the business. They get to learn crucial skills like choosing and making decisions, earning money, and helping others.”

Strafelda uses a 60-by-100-foot plot at the front of one of her great-

grandfather’s fields to grow perennial and annual flowers for her business. The varieties available vary by season— sometimes by day depending on the weather. Current staples include zinnias, cosmos, snapdragons, dahlias, sunflowers, and other annuals.

Strafelda is also looking ahead and has been working to incorporate more shrubs and perennials into her plot to help with sustainability while reducing the need for as much annual planting.

“Our area is lucky to be able to enjoy such beautiful agricultural growth,” Strafelda explained. “I couldn’t imagine not getting to enjoy so many great flower varieties.”

Spreading Joy One Flower at a Time

Even though life can feel like a lot at times, especially during the summer, finding a balance and seeing everything come together can be rewarding, Strafelda remarked “creating sweet and kind humans,” and “bringing joy through flowers” are her passions.

She truly is all about finding a new bloom or sharing a fresh-from-thegarden bouquet.

Be sure to check out Olson Blooms’ bouquet subscriptions in the spring and summer that are filled with seasonal flowers. Strafelda also offers workshops; a few are coming up in August that will be hosted at Venue 31 outside of Hawley. These workshops will give people the creativity to perfect their own arrangements. Additionally, Olson Blooms does DIY bloom buckets, and has flower pop-ups and tables at the Hawley Market.

Questions

ohn Machacek, Chief Innovation Officer for the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, has worked with countless startups throughout our community over the years. He knows their ups, and their downs, but most of all, he knows the questions to ask them. Here are John Machacek’s 10 questions for Eric Miller, Founder and CEO, Dwel.

01

Will you please tell me your Dwel elevator pitch?

Dwel’s mission is to help busy professionals complete their routine home maintenance. We do this by creating a customized home care plan to keep your home and its systems in the best shape.

02

To elaborate a bit further, in your current iteration, what do you envision a typical customer relationship or process looks like?

As a Home Inspector by trade, I continued to notice the same routine maintenance not being completed on homes. Over time, this can affect a home and its systems, and cost the homeowner a substantial amount of money. With that, Dwel was born and we took on the mission to help busy professionals complete their routine home maintenance.

We do this by having a Dwel Pro complete a home assessment. That assessment is then used to create a customized home care plan, and this plan incorporates at least two service visits per year by our team. During these visits, the Dwel Pro will complete the tasks within the homeowner’s care plan, which would include things like changing filters, checking pumps, general repairs, etc. A homeowner also can add other tasks to the service visit such as assembling furniture, hanging pictures, etc.

10 Questions

03

From

working with you,

I’m aware

that this

is a slight pivot, or maybe a bit of a temporary pause on what your original intentions were. Will you please share a little about that?

Yeah, so originally, we focused on building a consumer software that allowed homeowners the ability to create their own home maintenance lists. As we beta-tested this software, we gathered a lot of great feedback that our beta testers wanted a more hands on approach. We took this information and worked with Shams Jiwani, a local product and strategy leader. He really helped me navigate our pivot and refine our idea to better serve the customer and gain traction.

With the pivot, we decided to first take a more local approach and are focusing on the service side of the business. We still have our long-term goal of developing software that can scale nationally but know that we need to better understand customer and provider needs, in order to then build the scaling part of our business.

04

Pivots and continual evolution are normal for software and tech. But often, just starting and executing can be a problem for some, as they hesitate on their idea. With you creating a beta version early on and evolving from there, will you please share any thoughts on starting and executing?

Starting is certainly the hardest part. I think that it’s both easier and harder than ever to get started due to the number of resources we now have access to. It’s easy to get lost in the scope creep, thinking that you need to have sophisticated systems and marketing to make a viable business. Honestly, the best place to start is pen and paper. For example, we had spent a decent amount of time discussing adding a payment processing system to our software. When in reality, with the number of customers we had, we could’ve easily just sent out a basic invoice via email and then added it in later on.

The customers dictate what you need to build and finding ways to get constant

feedback is important. Watching how customers are using your product or service gives you information on what your next feature or process update needs to be.

Another awesome part of the local entrepreneur ecosystem is all the great organizations that are here and want to help you get started and succeed. We had the opportunity to participate in the gBETA cohort through gener8tor. This was a pivotal program that really helped us understand where we wanted our business to go. There are so many more groups and programs I could mention that have been super helpful.

05

As you just mentioned participating in the gBETA startup program, you’ve also been part of Innovate ND. What are some of the positive impacts of being accepted into those two programs?

Yeah, the gBETA program through gener8tor was very impactful on our business. Through the program, I was able to learn all about how the venture capital world works. At the same time, you’re plugged into a massive network

of companies and professionals that are all looking to help each other succeed. They have a wealth of knowledge and perspective from every industry. The program really helped us understand where we wanted our company to go and how to set ourselves up for success from a funding and capital perspective.

With Innovate ND, what we found to be beneficial was one of the requirements for the program is to complete customer interviews. I think this is always something that’s hard for startups to do for various reasons. First, no one loves to potentially get feedback that may not validate their idea. Second, is that you wear so many hats it can be easy to toss taking the time to talk to customers to the side. Having to get feedback helps you learn quickly what the customers think and want.

Lastly, when thinking of programs like these, a big impact of these programs is just getting plugged into the local entrepreneur ecosystem. We have something special here in Fargo. This ecosystem wants you to succeed, but it can’t help you do that unless you put in the effort to hop into it.

06 With you being a nontechnical founder, what are some ways you got around
that when working on the tech product?

Some may think it’s crazy to be a nontechnical founder of a tech company and there are days they may be right, haha. Coming back to the local ecosystem, we are fortunate to have the Emerging Digital Academy (EDA) here in Fargo. The EDA was a big reason why we were able to get started. I don’t have the technical skills, but I was able to bring my ideas to them with pen and paper. We were able to partner with the EDA and have their students use our idea for their capstone project. This gave the students the ability to work on a real-world idea and it gave us a tangible starting block. Part of our partnership was working with Blaine Booher at the EDA to help establish their co-op program. Through that, we were able to hire the first two co-op students to continue to develop our idea.

Blaine was also a great resource to connect me to other local founders and CTOs who have taken the time out of their busy schedules to give advice, talk through ideas, and connect me to other individuals who’ve helped us get to today.

07
In the time I’ve known you, you were accepted into this year’s Entrepreneur District cohort. How has that been going?

As you can tell, the theme has been that we’ve really leveraged the local ecosystem. Part of that is The Entrepreneur District, which is a program through Dakota Business Lending. It’s a 12-month cohort where each business owner, or resident as we’re called, gets a desk at the DBL office.

All the District residents are from different industries, and it provides for a lot of different perspectives. Being able to work with other small business owners who are in their startup phase has made the program beneficial and gives me the drive to keep moving forward.

Each week, we have a table talk where one of the residents leads a conversation on a business topic. We are also paired with a mentor in the community and establish monthly goals for our business.

10 Questions

08

With about a year into this, and things you have learned and worked on since then, what are some hopes and goals for Dwel over the next year?

With pressing pause on the software development and pivoting to the service side, my hope is that in the next year, we can build a customer base that gives us the opportunity to relaunch our development. I also have the goal to expand outside of the FM area and start to grow our business on a national scale.

09

So, while that question was about a time machine to the future, if you could go back in time to Eric from several years ago, what hindsight advice would you give yourself?

Just start. Start small, start basic, but just start. If you’re willing to listen, you’re going to be able to create a business that people want.

10

To wrap it up, what can we do as a community to help you and Dwel succeed?

Connect with us. Whether that is following us on social media, grabbing a coffee to introduce yourself, becoming a customer or giving us feedback on our idea. Let’s connect. Help us spread the word that there’s a new business in town trying to do something different in-home maintenance.
