NOTCH T o start, I’d like to say that the point of putting out a style and shopping issue is not to tell you how to dress. Because let’s be real, anyone who knows me well knows that a good amount of my closet is black and scattered with a few items that may or may not make me look like a business-casual vampire. But just because my personal style is a shade

darker than most doesn’t mean I don’t know trends and true style when I see it, which is why we did our best when it came to picking out trending items that I think you’ll really enjoy. All style aside, one thing is truly important to me when it comes to this issue, and that is reminding you all to shop local. It’s essential to our community.

I’d like to thank all of the staff and models from Fowler’s Heritage Company, Proper & Prim, Lost in Fargo, Halberstadt’s on Broadway, Vivie's and LOT 2029 who participated in our fashion photoshoots, and to all of the local stores that let Paul Flessland and I shop around and take photos.

Here are a few other happenings at Fargo Monthly that I’m excited about.

We won some ADDYs! At the end of February, Fargo Monthly took home two awards at the AAFND ADDY Awards! We received a gold ADDY for “Editorial Spread or Feature – Series” for our June 2016 Flavor Awards issue and a silver award for “Publication Cover Design” for our August 2016 “13 Things To Love About Downtown Fargo” issue. I’m lucky that I get to work with such a talented team to make these accomplishments happen.

Flavor Awards Since the end of February, we’ve been working hard on our second annual Flavor Awards, which highlights the best of the best in local dishes and drinks according to you, the people of Fargo-Moorhead. Nominations are already complete and final voting will end April 5 (vote online at fargomonthly. com), so if I were you, I’d get excited for our May issue debuting the winners.

I’m already eager to show you the final results. Plus, you can’t tell me you aren’t looking forward to seeing an entire magazine filled with delicious food because that’s just not possible.

- Albert Einstein Throughout generations, play has inspired us to evolve, create and invent. Play is the

reason most inventors, big and small, have accidentally stumbled across something that changed and shaped the world as we know it.

However, throughout generations, we’ve also lost sight of the importance of playing–of imagining a world of endless possibilities and the necessity of stepping out of the ordinary, the mundane and the everyday tasks to explore in a playful, carefree way.

As Einstein so brilliantly states, imagination is the key to creating, growing and moving forward. It always has been and always will be. So why is it that most adults have no playdates scheduled in their planner and have to rack their brain to come up with the last time they let loose and played unapologetically?

Here are four reasons you, as a responsible adult, are required to find time to play.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT. Play provides a safe, risk-free environment to create without judgement. This is where the most creative ideas and visions come to life for adults. Often, we are so restricted by rules or guidelines that our creativity is capped or not even welcome. When an adult gets lost in “play,” curiosity is cultivated. This could lead to a new discovery, such as passion for a new hobby or interest. Play also presents opportunities to creatively solve problems.

TEAMWORK, BONDING AND SOCIAL INTERACTION. Social interaction and bonding is an essential and basic human need.

When we are shut up, say in our office, secluded for hours, days or weeks, we lose out on the benefits of basic human interaction.

This can provide laughter, physical touch, the use of a wide range of emotions, the opportunity for compassion and the exchange of love. As children, we do most things in groups. This is where we cultivate an appreciation for a community. This admiration doesn’t stop once we become an adult because we still find satisfaction, a need and desire to belong to a likeminded tribe. Play provides us with an opportunity to interact with others and build our social connection, and no, I didn’t say social media connection. I’m talking about the face-to-face kind.

IT MINIMIZES STRESS. Laughter has been proven to uplift anyone’s mood and many times, laughter comes easily when you are joking and playing around. Playing and laughing without expectations or an agenda releases endorphins in our body. These are your “happy hormones,” the good guys, that give you a boost of overall well-being and happiness. Endorphins go up and stress goes down.

nown for his popular Mexican restaurants, Romo’s Tacos, Rodolfo Romo has set out on a venture in American fare with his newest establishment.

When Kitchen Gremlin closed a few months back, Romo jumped at the offer to occupy the restaurant’s former Broadway space and bring his new concept, Magnolia’s Restaurant, to the public. But his road to something new hasn’t been easy.

When you ask Romo why he decided to open a restaurant in Fargo, he’ll tell you that he was really just looking for a job.

When you ask him how he ended up in Fargo in the first place five years ago, he’ll tell you that he got lost.

“I’m originally from Jaliso, Mexico, but I was living in Omaha, Nebraska, and there was a recession. I couldn’t find a good job there. Someone had told me about a job in South Dakota and I think I was supposed to stop at Mount Rushmore. He told me it was a six-anda-half-hour drive and to take 1-29 north and that I would get there. I didn’t take a turn and six-and-a-half-hours later I was on 13th Avenue South in Fargo and I stayed,” said Romo.

Once Romo arrived in Fargo, he stopped for dinner at the local IHOP and found a job there right away. After cooking at IHOP while also working construction, he started cooking for other area restaurants such as Lucky’s 13 Pub and Longhorn Steakhouse.

Just over three years ago, Romo started his own food truck off of 32nd Avenue South that served up tacos and authentic Mexican fare. Four months later, his first full Romo’s Tacos restaurant opened up on 13th Avenue South in a strip mall just off of 1-29. This past March marked the 13th Avenue location’s three-year anniversary, and in the last three years Romo has also expanded his restaurant to locations in Downtown Fargo’s historic Black Building and in a strip mall on the southern side of 19th Avenue North.

Romo said that his food creations don’t come from family recipes or passeddown traditions, but mostly from his years of experience working as a chef.

However, running his own food business has not been the easiest for Romo despite his Mexican chain’s success.

“The beginning was very hard. Four years ago I didn’t have any grey hair,” said Romo. “Everything is going, but it’s hard.

It is what it is. Either I do this or I work for somebody else. When you have a regular job you can call in sick or take a day off but here, I can’t. But it’s not so bad.”

What To Expect At Magnolia’s Restaurant Although he’s well known for his authentic Mexican cuisine, Romo is confident in trying something different with his new restaurant. After a quick refresh and update to the old Kitchen Gremlin space, Magnolia’s opened to the public in late February. The restaurant serves up American fare with a focus on steak, pasta and seafood. You’ll also find a great selection of burgers and potato casseroles on the menu as well. Romo said that the menu is starting small, and that they try to make every dish as good as possible every single time.

“I think this place is beautiful and nice.

It’s at street level, unlike Romo’s Tacos downtown, which is in a basement. I love this place. It’s big and it has a lot of potential. We need to get people in here to try the food,” said Romo.

sizes and the fact that the menu and atmosphere is family-friendly. Each dish on the menu is extremely approachable and executed well, with a focus on realistic portions and not over-serving.

“A lot of people think we might do big portions to try and get people in here or that we put a lot of food on a plate just to get people to eat a lot, but we don’t do that. We serve regular portions and do normal sizes very good,” said Romo.

“When you go out to eat here in Fargo, you can pay $20 for a steak and I think that’s too expensive for people a lot of the time.

I’m trying to make it more affordable and even better. Sometimes you can go out to and pay a lot of money for no flavor.”

All in all, Romo has a message for those who have yet to hear about Magnolia’s or give it a chance: “Don’t be afraid to try the food. We just want people to come in and give us at least one try. It’s affordable and approachable.”

Gilmore introduced the world to the Experience Economy. They showcased their ideas that experiences and memories become a product more compelling than the goods and services consumed. Now, nearly 20 years after their ideas were introduced, we are watching entrepreneurs and organizations bet big on this idea, creating impact and opportunity with intentional design, thoughtful execution and a desire to delight customers.

This idea hit home to me in 2012 when landscape architect Mike Allmendinger of Land Elements spoke at TEDxFargo.

During his talk, he introduced the idea that a unique sense of place creates an experience, an experience creates a memory, memories inspire an engaged community and engaged communities lead to impact. His talk shifted the way I viewed the world, both as a consumer and in my business. It led our team at Emerging Prairie to focus on creating whimsy, wonder and energy with our events. It pushed me to spend more money, personally, on high-quality experiences versus buying based on

price. His talk inspired me to join the efforts and collaborate with others to make our community a driver of unique experiences in hopes of creating better memories for our visitors and locals.

Allmendinger's message has made a tremendous impact on the way I see the world.

The Fargo community is filled with folks committed to this idea. Want to see the experience economy in action? When I graduated from Concordia College, I wanted to relocate to a big city because there are supposedly “more things to do." The latter statement where the size of a city is proportional to the amount of activities available for its citizen is an urban myth. In July 2015, I joined Folkways–a social venture that nurtures culture creators (baristas, artists, local businesses, entrepreneurs and more) to make Fargo the best place to live on earth. Folkways believes that

he snow is melting, the daylight is longer, the weather is warmer, the coats we wear are thinner–this is synonymous of one thing: spring is slowly but confidently sweeping away winter.

community engagement instills a sense of belonging, and it has played a pivotal role in helping me engage with the FM area, thus instilling within me a deep sense of belonging. As a result, now I can proudly call our Silicon Prairie my home away from home.

If I could get a Godly aptitude, it would be omnipresence. After joining different circles and networks in the area I went from “there is not much to do” to an overwhelmingly “I cannot do it all." As the community liaison of Folkways, I have had the privilege to fully interact with the community in numerous ways, and that's why I have concocted for you my seven favorite ways of engaging with this enchanting Red River Valley.

1. TALKING TO THE AMBASSADORS At Folkways, we believe that the ambassadors of our community are the individuals that have hundreds of interactions with people on a daily basis: baristas, artists, entrepreneurs, owners of local businesses, etc. They are approachable and they know the pulse of the area. I have interacted with these valuable ambassadors many times when promoting an event or even hanging posters on their rich community walls and windows.

2. COMMUNITY EVENTS The fact that you are reading this monthly magazine already proves that you are proactively searching for events in the area. Knowing exactly when and where events are happening is a team effort. I have noticed that by inviting people to events I was aware of resulted in the same people always remembering to invite me to other community events that they are aware of.

3. THE TRI-COLLEGE COMMUNITY In 2016, Fargo was named "Best Small College Town" in the nation according to schools.com! The local colleges are vibrant, rejuvenating and they dictate the pulse of the FM area. The different sporting events, art events, multicultural festivals and keynote speakers that come to North Dakota State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College bring to our town what can be sometimes overlooked.

4. PIERCING ONE’S BUBBLE I compare it to people preparing for a marathon and the different milestones they have to check off before getting to the actual race. It is the same for joining new circles or networks–you do it with an incremental approach, otherwise you will be overwhelmed, thus discouraged.

The sense of discomfort is a sign of personal growth, comparable to how the soreness after a good workout is a synonym of muscle gain.

5. VOLUNTEER This can be a weekly, monthly or even yearly habit where you decide to reach out to local nonprofits. I can ensure you that any help is always welcomed.

I am always grateful to be part of a community that empowers, celebrates and supports nonprofits with yearly events such as the recent Giving Hearts Day back in February.

6. “DO IT YOURSELF” Sometimes there is a club or a circle you want to join but it doesn’t exist yet. This is when you create this non-existing group.

Social media can connect you to other people in the community sharing your passion for a new thing or hobby you're interested in. This is one of my favorite ways of meeting new people, because there is an automatic sense of ownership and pride by the members of a newlycreated group.

7. THE POWER OF SHOWING UP Finally, all of this would not be possible if you don’t do what Woody Allen says is 80 percent of success: showing up.

The other 20 percent left is usually being approachable by smiling, how you present yourself at community events, plus the time and effort are you willing to give to the community. Once you have showed up, you might as well give it a shot and engage with at least one of the organizers at the event in order to add an “ambassador” to your list of friends that will get you up-to-speed with other events.

In a nutshell, there are multiple ways to start this engagement journey.

Nevertheless, the one precious element you have to give, no matter who you, are to successfully engage with our beloved community is time.

Q&A What do you like about working at Fargo Billiards?

“I love the people here. Everybody is really fun to work with and our managers are great people to learn from.

It’s always busy here and it’s never boring. There’s always something new.”

Can you tell us about your drink recipe?

“It’s got muddled jalapeños and sugar, in the form of simple syrup, along with lemon, lime, orange and pineapple juice. So it’s sweet and spicy at the same time. It’s different but really fun and refreshing. I love everything spicy and after experimenting a little bit, I discovered that oranges and jalapeños pair really well together.”

What type of spirits do you enjoy working with most?

“I like working with vodka because there’s a lot you can do with it and it mixes so well with a variety of things, whereas bourbon and whiskey can already be something as they are.”

What’s a piece of bartending advice you always stick to?

“It’s about the customers more than it is about what you’re pouring, and really going for what they like as opposed to what you like. Be personable and have a good time.”

What are some cocktail trends that you’re noticing recently?

“Bourbon and whiskey. People are ordering it more and bartenders are making it more available on their menus and including it with different ingredients. It’s becoming more approachable to all drinkers. Whiskey isn’t what it used to be and people are really starting to do more with it.”

“Orange Popper” • 2 oz. Absolut Mandarin Vodka • 1 oz. Finest Call simple syrup • 1 oz. pineapple juice • 1 oz. orange juice • 3 small slices fresh jalapeño • 2 orange wedges • 1 lime wedge • 1 lemon wedge Start by rimming a martini glass with sugar.

Muddle simple syrup with jalapeño, lemon, lime and orange slices in a tumbler shaker. Add vodka, pineapple juice and orange juice to the muddled ingredients and shake. Strain into glass and garnish with an orange wedge.

former NDSU Bison football players Cole Jirik and Christian Dudzik opened Dynasty Performance Training in South Fargo, a free-weight gym and training facility that specializes in customized workouts for all types of athletes, teams and adults looking to advance their fitness training. And they do

Close to two years before that, Jirik and Dudzik were both approaching the end of their playing careers and decided to come back to Fargo with the idea of opening a gym to train and mentor young athletes in their journeys.

Here are a few things that set Dynasty apart from other gyms, and why adults and kids of all abilities can benefit from its unique features.

Currently, the youngest athlete is 9 years old, but the gym also sees all kinds of adults coming in for group workouts.

Adults can benefit from group workouts and small class sizes.

Jirik and Dudzik said that they have looked into hiring additional help, but that they still want to keep a small trainer-to-athlete ratio to pay enough attention to each athlete. The duo sets workouts for each adult class so that you can work with others doing the same activities, but the activities are also modified to accommodate an individual’s personal needs and goals. It’s the best of both worlds.

There are individualized workouts so that you can reach your goals.

“We try to find what a kids’ flaws are, learn what their goals are and then take that program and build their workout into it,” said Jirik. “We put an individual program in a group of kids and have their program tailor toward them getting better. I think that’s a lot different than what others in town do.”

“You still get the group atmosphere with the camaraderie and the accountability with other people," said Jirik. "You have someone encouraging you besides your trainer to help you get through reps because you know someone else is maybe struggling just as much as you are."

You’ll be held accountable.

No matter your age, Dudzik and Jirik said that they try to train everyone the way their athletes are trained and everyone is held accountable when it comes to reaching their goals.

“We have everyone be very accountable for what they do and make sure they’re working hard while they’re in here so that they can get results," said Jirik. "We’re

They can teach you things that might be too intimidating to learn in a typical gym setting.

“We teach them how to do some of the

things that might be more intimidating in a regular gym setting such as squatting or dead lifting,” said Dudzik. “If you just go to a regular gym franchise or watch a video and try to do things by yourself, you can hurt yourself or not hit the muscles you should be hitting. We try to help with the things that are more intimidating and we see a lot of confidence grown because of that.”

Dynasty cares about everyone that comes in, and it’s not just about sports.

“Sometimes, I think when you hire a personal trainer," said Jirik. "They don’t really care if their client sees results or not. We don’t just focus on sports. We ask them how their day was or how their classes are going. We try to get to know every athlete on a personal level as well as a professional setting as their trainer."

“We’re trying to raise their standards and teach them some of the principles we learned at NDSU," said Dudzik. "One of our biggest things is finishing–finish every rep, every set, all of the drills. It’s one of the things that led us to be successful at NDSU, so we just want to pass that down to the kids.”

Workout Experience

As stated, you don’t have to be an athlete to work out with Dynasty. Christian Dudzik took me through an average one-hour adult workout that can be accommodated to all ability levels. As a former college dancer and coach, I was always used to workouts that focused mostly on legs and core. What I like about this workout is that it’s very well rounded and approachable. It involves multi-joint/ muscle exercises so that you’re working multiple parts of your body all at once versus trying to target one specific zone or muscle group.

*This workout is stylized by number of sets x number of reps. For example, 3x10 means three sets of ten reps each.

Goblet Squats (3x10)

Squat and return to a standing position while holding a dumbbell the long way with your palms holding the top part. Make sure you lean back and squat down far enough into your backside so that your knee doesn’t go past a 90-degree angle over your foot.

Medicine Ball Push-Ups (3x10)

You’ll have your hands on the ball, which really adds an element of balance for your core, while doing a traditional pushup or modified with your knees on the ground.

Medicine Ball Sit-Ups (3x10)

Do a traditional sit-up but make sure the ball stays straight up when you’re on your back and then over the crown of your head when you sit up. This was a challenge for me to always have the ball up and keep my arms straight while also focusing on the actual sit-up itself.

Rest two minutes Single Arm Lunges

(3x5 each leg) Lunge and return back to a standing position after each rep. Like squats, remember to make sure your knee doesn’t go over your foot and creates a 90-degree angle.

You’ll also hold a weight in your hand and hold it above your head the entire time, switching arms for the opposite leg you’re lunging on.

Front/Lateral/Rear Raises (3x8 each) Front: You’ll hold the dumbbells down in front of you like you’re holding buckets, starting with your knuckles facing the ground and lifting to chest level and back down to the starting position (controlled) for each rep.

(3x8 each) Lateral: Start by holding the weights at your sides and raising them out just past shoulder level and back down for each rep.

Front/Lateral/Rear Raises

(3x8 each) Rear: You’ll be in almost a half-squat position with your back parallel to the ground and your arms straight down with your knuckles facing the floor while holding the weights. Raise your arms out to your sides and back down to the starting position (controlled) for each rep.

Physio Ball Mountain Climbers

(3x30) The ball will lean up against the wall while you balance on it and switch back and forth between each leg quickly. Literally, just think of it as a climbing-like motion and you’ll nail it. One back-and-forth leg switch counts as one rep.

Rest two minutes

Hex Bar Dead Lift (3x8)

This one is pretty straight forward, but keep in mind the proper form for doing squatting positions.

Alt. Medicine Ball Slams

(3x8 each side) With this exercise, I circled the medicine back around my head with my arms stretched out and when I got to each side, I slammed the ball down as hard as I could.

Once you get the hang of the fluid motions, it’s easier to do this at a quicker pace.

Bench Leg-Ups (3x15)

Start by laying on a bench with your butt hanging off the edge and your legs extended. Slowly raise your legs and then lift your butt off the bench when they get to an upright position. Then you’ll slowly bring your legs back down to the starting position to finish the rep.

The key here is to take it rather slow and have controlled motions to really engage your muscles.

Finish Hurdle Hops (3x20 seconds)

I will say that this exercise one took a lot out of me. Jump side to side over the hurdle and each time you land, you’ll land in a controlled crouched/ squat-like position so that you’re engaging multiple muscles and not just jumping back and forth. The squat landing also maintains healthy knee angles for strength and to minimize the risk of injury.
